Jeanne and Barbara founded Mother Courage Bookstore and Art Gallery in 1978. They housed books on the topics of feminism, spirituality, abuse, LGBTQ+ experiences, art, and pop culture. Mother Courage soon became a publishing company for these kinds of stories as well. The bookstore closed its doors in 1983, but Mother Courage Press continued to publish books until 2002.
