Due to continuing budget cuts. UW-Parkside is being forced to cut back on the number of associate lecturers. Associate lecturers, or commonly known as adjunct professors, are lecturers who teach at UW-Parkside in a part- time role and typically have another career in addition to teaching. They normally hold contracts that are renewed each semester and are also classified as those who are not on a path toward obtaining tenure with the university. "Due to the budget situation they have cut down the number of people teaching in a part-time capacity." -Walter Feldt Secretary of the Faculty Senate According to a non- tenured professor who would only speak on the condition of anonymity, the dismissals are a result of a 2002 spending cut that paved the way for the cuts in part-time lecturers, and their salaries. The measure of not renewing the contracts of these 51 adjunct professors will result in approximately $150,000 in savings for the UW-Parkside budget. In total. UW-Parkside receives approximately eight percent of the total UW system budget but faces a 30 percent cut in its funding, resulting in about a $600,000 budget deficit that must be rectified. ~ "Due to the budget situation they have CUl down the number of people teaching in a part-time capacity," said Interim Secretary of the Faculty Senate Walter Feldt. Although I can't disagree with them and I often consider how far our organization has come, we still have important things to work out. Not only that, but I won't feel like my time at The Ranger News is complete untill ensure the continuous growth of the newspaper for years to come. In last week's "Letter From the Editor," I mentioned how we had four staff members go to an Associated Collegiate Press convention in Kansas City, and. upon their return, we decided to set up a development committee that would focus on establishing goals and finding ways to implement what it takes to reach those goals. I also said that the goals would reach far beyond this semester and next; they would include five- and ten-year goals as well. Many of us on the newspaper staff wish UW-Parkside offered a journalism program, but in a way we feel lucky that it doesn't. Not having the program allows us students to learn in our own way. This has been one of the-greatest things about working with The Ranger News; we don't have faculty breathing down our necks about how we produce journalism. Instead, we learn from making mistakes and working with peers. I have often said that the only way to learn journalism is to do journalism. While all of our reporters will have solid experience on their resume and a good portfolio by the time they leave, it is unfortunate that The Ranger News or UW-Parkside in general gives no recognition to their educational development. One of the things we are working on is making a "newspaper certificate," which will be not accredited through UW-Parkside, but througb UW-Parkside students. As the university grows, maybe it will catch up and offer a journalism certificate, and eventually, a major and a minor, Something our executive reporter, Nick Honeck, bas headed up and already implemented is a news segment on 101.7 FM WIPZ, Parkside's student radio station. My hope is that this is the start of sparking interest in broadcast journalism at our school. At any rate, we are using another medium to further attempt to engage the community by presenting news and information. We are also making an effort to gain an off-campus readership, which will certainly bring an interest to our community from people who forget UW-Parkside is a four-year institution that is only a few miles away. Furthermore, our new development committee is formulating a systematic content analysis for every semester. to include readership surveys and formal staff critiques that will ensure that we exceed goals and continuously improve the product we make and the way it is produced. Beyond all that, we are also working on recruitment initiatives, because we can always use more staff - especially more reporters to cover stories that might otherwise be.overlooked. Our staff has worked hard to bring the newspaper up to the level it is at. There are still random typos and things that need to be worked on, but we have indeed come a long way. Keeping the ball rolling for future generations of The Ranger News is our top priority because it is in our best interest. We appreciate your support, Parkside, ifyq Henry D.
