ULMER Forcing a smile, UW-Parkside police officer Marlene Schlecht contemplates a future without police work. This month, Schlecht received a 3D-day termination due to injuries she had acquired while on the job. Starting December 31, Schlecht will no longer be employed at UW- Parkside. According t6 the decision, she is not fit for duty. Under the conditions of her termination, she also loses her eligibility for police-force employment elsewhere. "The police department issued the letter, but this is more of a human resources issue:' said Chief of Police Michael Marzion. "I signed the papers, but I didn't necessarily make the decision." Three years ago, Schlecht helped a student start his car by jump-starting it. While she stood in front of the student's car, he popped the clutch and ran into her, causing nerve damage to both her knees. '"'I wasn't sure what to do," said Schlecht. "I wrapped my knees in ice packs and called in another officer. I filled out a form saying I bad been injured on the job. Only later did I find out I was supposed to write my own accident report." After physical therapy, Schlecht has been restricted to what is considered "limited" duty, In other words, she does not work on the street but does office-type work. ''1 was injured, and T tried to get back to work as soon as I could." said schlecht. "I chose to stay at Parkside because I love the students, and I love the school." For the past 23 years, ScWecht has worked with several organizations to prevent and counsel victims of sexual a~sault, domestic and dating violence, and stalking. These organizations include Crime Stopers, Women's Horizons Pathways of Courage, and the Parkside Violence Prevention Project. One of her special projects, Advocates Supporting Parkside and Educating for Non- Violence (ASPEN), "includes training for advocates that will provide services and support for victims of sexual assault dating/domestic violence and stalking and who will also assist in educating the community for nonviolence," according to an ASPEN pamphlet. "I have been working and trying to be proactive to prevent students from becoming victims and helping victims become survivors" said Schlecht. ' Schlecht also wrote a grant to bring the UW-Parkside police department up to date with technological standards. This grant enabled campus police to purchase new" computers that ensure that student files remain protected and confidential. Although Schlecht could have applied for retirement in two years. she will now be denied retirement benefits due to her termination. In order to prove she can continue to work in her current physical state, Schlecht would need to gain the approval of at least three doctors. "The problem is that they want a guarantee that my knees won't give out," said Schlecht "No doctor can give a guarantee like that." At the state level, one vote overturned the ruling or Schlecht'< injury as a case or "hazardous duty:' This decision largely impacted the current situation. "Hazardous duty qualifies the officer for different sorts of pay:' said Manion. "1\ also affects how the situation is dealt with." Representing all campus police. the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Association (WLEA) ha also taken an interest in this case. According to Schlecht. this police force union believes that the decision in her situation may create a precedent for future injury cases in the state. After leaving UW-Parkside, Schlecht plans to continue her work with victims of violence through volunteer work with her church. BY NICK HONECK Reapplying for funds from the Segregated University Funds Allocation Committee (SUFAC) IS a process that major-status organizations go through every ~ear at this time. The process IS a long one, but when they are over, organizations secure their funding for the next school year. The process begins when the organizations are given their Budget Proposal Packets. Contained within the packet are sheets about the 2006- 2007 Spending Guidelines, appropriate and inappropriate segregated fee expenditures. a budget-request questionnaire, an officer payroll sheet, and the individual and budget summary breakdown sheets. As reported in the last issue of The Ranger News, organizations will only be allowed to ask for the same budget they received last year. Before the budget sheet.' can be completed, the budget must be approved by a general assembly from the organization. This is a new step in the process for this year. Once the packets are completed by the organization, they are sent back to SUFAC. Copies are then made and distributed to the DIne members of SUFAC. They are asked La read over the copies so they have some background knowledge of what the organizations are a..king for. Then. the orgunizanen presents Its budget 10 SlJFAC lor 10 minutes. A cap of 1.500 has been set on office supply spending for 2006- '07. . After the question-and- answer period. the SUFAC members then take ten minutes to vote on how much they want to give to the organization. Letter From The Editor This issue marks the end of another semester for The Ranger News. : I am confident in saying that out staff has not only succeeded in bringing the newspaper to yet a higher level in terms of design quality and journalistic integrity, but the commitment and dedication of our staff has proven to be as solid as it ever was. Though it feels like it has been a long semester, I can look at the far wall in the news office and see the previous 13 newspapers we have published in the past three months. We have certainly made the most valuable use of our time. There were a few snags along the way - this being our first semester printing weekly - but we always pulled through. After winter break, we will be back on the scene, ready to take the spring semester head-on. Our Wednesday workshops, which were also new this semester, have added an extremely useful benefit to the news staff and students of UW-Parkside. These have focused on everything from basic reporting to photojournalism to design and layout. Our workshops have not only increased the value of the content of the newspaper, but also of the education students here receive. As expected, we have had conflicts with student government and administration this semester, but these conflicts will most likely always exist. We are not a public relations or propaganda publication. In fact, we see it as the media's responsibility to examine what people are doing with a critical eye and hold them publicly accountable, and if we only displayed the positive sides of what organizations here do, we would not be serving the community in the way that is needed. If we don't hold student government and administration accountable, then who will? People are always telling me how the paper has improved from years past. I attribute much of this to our mission to improve every issue of the newspaper and each aspect of the organization as a whole. We never rest or sit back and think we have reached perfection. It all goes back to the commitment and dedication our staff MS to creating the best product we can, and I am proud to be a part of such a cohesive team. Farewells are an order for three of our most dedicated staff members. To Opinion Page Editor Sherry Nelsen and Executive Reporter Nick Honeck, I say congratulations on graduating. To News Editor Ryan Kamphuis, I say good luck working this spring with the New York Knicks. I'm going to miss each of these people, and things won't be the same around the office without them. As for me, I'll be around one more semester, with my partners-in-press Nicholas Michael Ravnikar and Matt Gonya, along with all the other current staff members. Next semester we plan on knocking everyone's socks off and ending our experiences with The Ranger News as best as we can, while also transitioning the newspaper into its new leadership with the 2006-2007 editor-in-chief. , Thank you to everyone who has supported and/or read the newspaper this semester.
