Reorganization plan goes to Senate Kari Dixon New. Editor Carol Cashen, Interim As- sltant Chancellor for Educa- tional Services, will meet with the Parkslde Student Government Association at its weekly meeting tomorrow to discuss the new Education- al Services Reorganization Plan. The plan was written by Michael Bassts, who held that position before Cashen, after the directors of the various departments consulted with their individual staffs and submitted recommendations to him. Bassis conferred with new Chancellor Sheila Ka- plan, Cashen said, and she (Kaplan) Is In favor of the plan. Copies of the plan were ctr- culated to the University Committee, the Academic Staff Committee, Student Government and the commit- tee comprised of division chairs. All have responded fa- vorably to the plan, except student government. and Cashen said she would like to lay to rest the fear that an extra layer would be placed between the students and her- self. "Students will not be In- volved In yet another layer of bureaucratic red tape," she said. "The administrative liaison with student govern- ment would remain the as- sistant chancellor-unless Chancellor Kaplan decides to implement a Dean of Stu- dents position, and then that person will interact between the students and the chancel- lor." The Ranger, Parkslde 's weekly newspaper r was given a rating of "First Class" by the Associated Collegiate Press/National Scholastic Press Association for the first semester, 1985-1986. ACP is the oldest national press organization in the United States, whose purpose is to improve scholastic jour- nalism and to honor achieve- ment. A "First Class" rating. which represents very good to excellent, places the Ranger in the top 40 percent of cone- ge newspapers nationwide. Newspapers are rated on every aspect, from writing to layout. . A spokesman from ACP said that 25 percent of the Student Regent visits by Jenny Carr At the last PSGA meeting, John Schenian, the only stu- dent member of the Board of Regents, addressed the sen- ate. Schenian briefly explained to the Senate that he has served on the Board since November, 1985 and that he Is the first student to hold such _ an office. Like the other members of the Board of Regents, Scheni- an serves as a volunteer and is reimbursed only for his ex- penses. Unlike the other Board members who hold their positions for seven years, student representa- tives, Schenian stated, hold the office for two years. The reasoning behind this. according to Schenian. is that the student is anxious to get started on a career and the other members of the Board are successful members of the community. Letter to the Editor Student kicks Ranger in the "backside" To the Editor: Ten or so times a year. usu- ally when I am bored to tears, I pick up an issue of the illustrious Stranger to see what's happening In the little minds of small people. So far you're batting 1000: without faU I have been keenly disap- pointed in what I have read. In general, these comments are applicable to various parts of every issue; but in particular, the kind of article which prompts this letter ap- peared In the March 20th issue, page 11, by Hans Haus- child, entitled "Anti-rock bri- gade infiltrates Kenosha." I am concerned because this type of article is indicative of the kind of pseudo-Intellec- tualism a newspaper uses to mask over an inept reporter's lack of objectivity. Does the Backside Stranger purport to be a newspaper? I fear that it does; but then so does the Na- tional Enquirer. The essay is a prime example of a major malady in the media of America--the redefinition of news and objectivity. The article written by Hau- schild was quite a biased essay. Beginning with the "headline, OJ the entire article bordered on being no more than a diatribe against the person and views of Peters, the subject of the essay. and thus. indirectly, upon those who would hold similar views. Hauschild offered al- ternate interpretations for each of the ideas he chose to quote from Peters, but in only a single instance did he offer anything more than his own opinion to back up these al- ternate views. In this single Instance, (about the origins of the term "rock-and-roll"), his claim to back up his view Is weakly presented. Indeed, I myself have a book at home which contradicts Hauschild's assertion and backs up Pe- ters' assertion. This simply shows that some people care- fully choose their sources In order to back up their own pre-conceived opinions. I can hear Hauschild now: "What do you think Peters was doing at that seminar? His views were just as one- sided!" Certainly that is right. The difference is that Peters was conducting a sem- inar at which he announced up front what his views were (at least this Is what Hauschl- Id says--I wasn't there). And there Is nothing wrong with this; It Is this presentation of differing points of view that helps to balance our society and keeps It from going too far to the right or the left. And the proper way to do this Is in the manner Peters conducted it. In contrast, the essay writ- ten by Hauschild was presen- ted in a medium that is as- sumed to be objective and un- influenced by any special seg- ment of society. Sadly, how. ever, the reaction by the Backside Stranger simply il- lustrates how one social group reacts when they feel they are threatened by the lifestyle of another group .. This, then is the core of the matter: a newspaper is a public forum, and is held in the public trust as being ob- jectlve enough to search out and present both sides of an issue in order for the public to make an Informed choice. Hauschild's essay is, of course, printed under the responsibility of the editor, and therefore Jennie Tun- kleicz must be equally held responsible for the journal- Istic sham of the Backside Stranger. Indeed, if one ex- amines the institutions of the country, It can be found that there is accountability ex- pected of every segment of society--except for the media, which launch into a Ftrst- Amendment tirade at the very mention of responsibility In reporting. It Is this lack of responsibility that has eroded the confidence of the public for the media. It is a peculiar thing that people like the edi- torial staff and reporters of the Backside Stranger feel it is such a "frightening" thing for Peters to exercise his Constitutional right to inform those who willingly came to hear what he had to say. These same people, however, see nothing wrong with using the University newspaper to present page after page, issue after Issue of bigoted, one- sided oplnlons ..regardless of the fact that they themselves continually cry out thai Ihis campus's plurallstlc sludenl body needs all polnls of view (apparently that means all points of view that agree with their own). There are adages to descri- be this situation: "Practice what you preach," "What's good for the goose is good for the gander," "You need a litt- le of your own medicine." George Orwell even wrote a book that described the atti- tude of the editorial staff, and in the book "1984" he describ- ed one group which felt that ..All animals are equal. It has been the perception of some that our coverage hits been one-sided· namely that Guskin's story has been heard extensively and intensive/~ while the student's viewpoint has not been aired. This perception is quite correct; our coverage has been rather one-sided. The reasons for this are: [a] it took several weeks for the students to formulate a response to Guskin's policy recommendations. [b] The Russian flu. Several members of our staff were infected. Below then is the student's point of view.
