PSGA President Tyson Fettes announced that secretary Michele Slabik resigned from her role in PSGA this past week. Fettes said that PSGA will be looking to fill this position and that applications are available in the PSGA office. 10 his report, Fettes also said that a state of the school address will be held at noon on Feb. 28 in either mid or upper Main Place. In a report from Constitution Committee director Michael Scerpella, Scerpella announced that the new constitution will be e-mailed out to senators later than was expected for their review. In his director report, Louis Kirleis, director of the Segregated University Fees Allocation Committee, announced tbat Jan. 29 at 4:30 p.m. will be the last point at which student organizations and other groups can appeal the amount of money SUFAC suggested allotting them. The first of four additions to the PSGA senate at the meeting was Alesha Goss, the new representative of the UW- Parks ide Women's Center. PSGA's constitution calls for the Women's Center to have a representative in PSGA meetings. The other three additions to the senate were by way of elections. Anthony Rcgnsvoog, Sandi Love, and Richard Anderson were all elected to the PSGA senate on Friday. The senate returned to the Excessive Executive Stipends Act introduced to senator David Wilson in the previous meeting. Wilson was not in attendance for the meeting, but Patricia Jensen, rl~:;:;: who co-sponsored the bill with Wilson, was at the meeti ng. so th resolution could still be discusse and voted upon. The resolution stated that "no stipends for any organization should exceed a maximum amount of 25% of tha organizations [sic] final budget." The resolution was rejected by a voteof6-12-3. The Excessive Executive Stipends Act was the first of two resolutions by Wilson and Jense that ~ere discussed at the Jan. 2 meeting. The second was titled the Information and Training of Student Governance Act. STRAUSS Strauf) l 2@uwp.edu UW - Parkside is among 76 other post- secondary institutions recognized by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in December 2006 for outstanding community engagement, as well as being among the 62 institutions to receive the honor in two separate categories. The Carnegie Foundation classifies the characteristics and activities of colleges and universities for the purpose of educational research. All accredited institutions are automatically classified in the categories of Undergraduate Instructional Program, Graduate Instructional Program. Enrollment Profile, lIndergraduate Profile, and Size and Setting. The elective classification category is a new addition to the classification system. and Community Engagement is the first elective category. 88 colleges and universities applied to be recognized by the Community Engagement classification. The Community Engagement classification is defined on the Carnegie Foundation's Web site as "the collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities ... for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources-in a context of partnership and reciprocity." Within this classification, schools' achievements are categorized as Curricular Engagement, Outreach and Partnerships. or demonstrating a strong commitment to both. The candidates will be up for election by the U'W-Parkside student body on Wednesday, April 18, Thursday, April 19, from 9:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. to 5,00 p.m., respectively. Polls wilJ be open near Java Coast in upper Molinaro Hall. In a format that was more question-and-answer than debate, PSGA presidential candidates Anthony Dubose, Henry D: . Gaskins, and Donald Weber, fielded questions from students, which were read by moderator Michael Scerpella. One of the initial questions asked had to do with uw- Parkside's involvement with the United Council ofUW Students, to which UW-Parkside studeots currently pay $4 each, per year. All three candidates favored staying with United Council. Gaskins said that, with students paying $20,000 per year to UC, the council should be listening to what students at UW-Parkside have to say. Weber said that ~tis important to get more IOformation about ue to the student body as a whole. The candidates were then asked about their opinions of the new constitution recently passed by the PSGA senate-and set to Parkside Student Government Association presidential candidates Henry D. Gaskins, Anthony Dubose and-Donald Weber answer questions from members of the crowd as part of. the . presidential debate on Wednesday, April II, in mid Main Place. PSGA Elections Director Michael ScerpeUa acted as moderator for the event. be put on the ballot during the elections on April 18 and 19. Gaskins thanked PSGA Senator David Wilson for drafting the constitution. Weber said that he will follow the new constitution to the nth degree. Dubose stressed making sure that the next PSGA chief justice has a good concept of how the new constitution works. . In regards to how they could cut the budget, the candidates offered varied answers. Gaskins claimed that much of the activities of PSGA could be accomplished with much less money. Dubose.defended the current setup, saying that theirs is the lowest-paid executive board in the UW System. Dubose pointed out that every other major-status organization pays stipends to members of its staff, as well. He stressed that organizations should work and collaborate more on programs as a way of reducing tension with the budget; he then encouraged organizations to look at their programming to see which programs have not been successful. Dubose also advocated getting a freeze on tuition. Weber favored unilateral cuts on this issue. "If we need to make a 5- percent cut, we need to make a 5-percent cut across the board," said Weber. All the candidates agreed that there was a need to reach out to get students more involved. Dubose said he will work to reach out to students and spoke of bringing more students to Washington D.C. with PSGA when they travel there. Weber said that students need to be more involved in how their segregated fees are being spent. Gaskins pointed out a concern of students graduating in May not being prepared well enough for the world beyond college and encouraged more students to get involved with organizations such as WlPZ 88.5 and The Ranger News. The candidates touched on other issues important to them. Dubose said that there were many issues currently not being heard on campus. Gaskins emphasized the need for PSGA to get out to students and said that in recent years, PSGA has not gotten out to students and thus has left them unaware of what PSGA is. Weber. talked about the problem of visibility at UW-Parkside, noting that the campus is in "the middle of nowhere" and is still mostly unknown. Weber also talked about a need to sit down with student organizations and faculty, regarding these suhjects. It's also. week in which I'm reminded of the power and responsibility of a.journalist. There are a lot of journalistic creeds and philosophies, and there are various summations of what journalism is and what function it serves. However, the core of journalism is informing the reader; that's about as basic as it gets. And, with promotion on campus limited to posters, a relatively underattended debate, and some Facebook groups, a campus newspaper that prints 2,000 issues per week can make a significant difference when it informs readers. Westbrook Editor-in-chief As I sat writing the recap of the debates (refer to the front page), I stressed myself out trying to make sure that the writ~ up was bias-free, balanced, and accurate. People tell me sometimes that we spend too much time covering student government, and I suppose there were times when -' thought, III retrospect, that I had been a bit excessive, but covering government and keeping readers informed of its actions is one of the basic tenets of journalism. . . .... The power of journalism is inherent 10 us Wide influence; I think this is part of the allure to some who enter into the field, the power to influence government and the masses. But, with the power of influence comes the need to be responsible in applying it (kind of like Spidennan). It's a broader lesson, as well, as all of our actions impact other people. The responsibility is present in all aspects of journalism, from the accuracy and content of the quotes to the need of a reporter to eliminate any biases of his or her own, both conscious and unconsciou . The responsibility is to keep our readers as informed as we can, to work in their best interest. This is the goal toward which we strive. I was thinking of finishing this letter with some self- deprecating joke about the best interest of the reader being served by me ending this letter or something like that, but I dunk I've just about driven that joke into the ground, so I'll acquiesce to the responsibility of not boring the reader with more lame jokes.
