Words and actions like these led Chancellor John Keating to address Upper-main Place last week Monday, April 23. After an introduction From Dayvin Hallmon, a UW-Parkside student and vice president of Rainbow Alliance, Keating took the podium. "This campus is an inclusive campus and will not tolerate anything that goes against that inclusiveness. The vandalization of your monster [... ] is again a reminder that we have not yet truly convinced the campus that everyone be highly respected no matter what their beliefs, what their orientations, what' their actions. Highly respected; that's what we need on every campus in this country, and we surely need ithere at UW-Parkside." The monster Keating referred to, which was vandalized itself, was the green closet monster. Silting outside the library, the' green monster was the Rainbow Alliance's response to the vandalization of material on campus. Student Dayviri Hallmon, who is vice president of Rainbow Alliance, provided the introduction to the event. falL" Keating went on to say that he has asked UW-Parkside Dean' of Students Steve McLaoghlin and professor Dean Yohnk to . work with students to figure out the process of putting a center together. Keating ending his speech with a call for a louder voice establishment of an LGST center (LGBT stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered). Keating said, "Today 1 am prepared to say that we will [work) towards establishing that center and will most likely see the appearance of that in this next from the LGBT community at UW-Parkside. Said Keating, "I want to congratulate you all for standing up for your rights. I want to hear all of you; every person on this campus is entitled to their beliefs." After the speech had ended, Hallmon later commented on the importance of having the chancellor address the crowd. "I think it's very nice anytime someone of this university in a position of power decides to step out. I think it makes a statement," said Hallmon. However, Hallmon went on to say that change in UW- Parksidc will take a lot more than a speech. "I also acknowledge that you must do something more than just give your word and give your presence; you must follow through with action, and particularly when it's a problem like this [.,.J, then you have to do more than just take action a couple months down the road. It has to be immediate and you have to be serious about it." Hallmon continued by questioning how many UW- Parkside staff members were serious about working on the issue of LGBT equality in the university. "How many professors, people with P,H.D:s, do we have .working on that at this university? Not very many, and of the ones that have said, 'Yes. I'll do it: - which you can count them on your hand and still have fingers left over - how many of them are really able to dedicate the time to it?" Hallmon asked. Hallman reiterated, "There's other things that also need to be addressed and taken into this equation if we proclaim to believe in diversity," Hallmon summed up that support for the LGBT community lies not in words alone. Said' Hallman, "I have students hurling the word fag in my direction at least two or three times a week. And if I'm out there taking the oppression and you say you support me, then you are asking to be out there taking it too." Sign damaged on campus ANDREW C. WESTBROOK westb002@uwp.edu The sign marking the entrance to the Communication Arts building's parking lot was naillaged April 2 L according to Parkside Police officer Danny Gavahan, who noticed the damage around 2:45 a.rn, that Saturday. Gavahan believes that a truck backed into the sign and drove off, based on tire tracks found, as well as a mud flap from a Ford Ranger. Gavahan found paint chips on the sian that he said were either dark o CCRV bill call-in day on campus grey or olive green, depending on who was looking at them. •Gavahan encourages students to tell Parkside Police if they have any other information about the incident. Replacing the sign will cost $2,791, according to Gavahan, He said that insurance would cover the cost but that that would raise the university's premiums, which would ultimately affect students financially as well. WESTBROOK wesbOO2@uwp.edu Emily Junion, a senator in Parkside Student Government .Assocation, as well as its Women's Issues director, announced that there will be an event held on Wednesday, May 2, in the PSGA office, Wyllie Dl39A, regarding the Compassionate Care for Rape Victims bilL CCRV, bill 129, is a bill in the state senate aimed at making emergency contraception more available in Wisconsin hospitals to victims of sexual assault. The bill stipulates that hospitals do the following for a sexual assault victim: "provide / her with medically and factually accurate and unbiased written and oral information about emergency contraception and its use and efficacy"; "orally inform her of her option to receive emergency contraception, her option to report tlie sexual assault to a law enforcement agency. and any available options for her to receive an examination to gather evidence regarding the sexual assault"; and "immediately provide emergency contraception to her upon her request." I've worked at The Ranger news for 2 1/2 years. and 1 can sa,! that the change to my life have been dramatic. Every semester . has been an opportunity to meet new people and garner new experiences. There have been things I've loved about being editor-in-chief and things I've hated, but all in all, the last S semesters have given me more than 1 couJd have ever expected. I was going to talk about how much every one of you would benefit from The Ranger News, but I know you're all probably sic of hearing me talk about it every week, so just know that I believe it because it's true. It's been fun, and no-so-fun, but ultimately rewarding. Even in times when I've wanted to be anywhere but our office, I couldn't escape the knowledge that 1 would not have traded this in iflcould. PUSS As many of you may know from the posters around campus. I wiII be stepping up to the position of editor-in-chief of The Ranger News next semester. It has taken me two years to get to this point, and I look forward to all the things I plan to accomplish during my last year at UW-Parkside. The best place to start is right here, in print With the help of the executive staff this semester, 1 have come up with a list of goals for the upcoming months. Some of these include organizational things like updating our staff handbook and selling ad space over the summer. Other goals are recruiting new people to our staff to fill the positions left open by graduating seniors and expanding our membership. However, my goals for the newspaper are not all about The Ranger News as an organization. Next semester, we will • try to reach out more to the UW-Parkside community by offering more educational workshops and working closely with other media-related-groups like campus radio station WIPZ and local publications such as The Kenosha News 'V'd The Racine Journal Times. We will also continue one of the movements we started this semester: establishing a journalism program on campus. In the past few weeks, we have recruited and hired several new staff members who deserve recognition. Three of our newest reporters are Joy Christie, Rachel Baker, and Michael Maxwell. One of our current reporters, Bob Rosati, is moving up to the position of News Page editor. In addition, we've hired two new executive board members. ] look forward to workiug with Adam Stark, our new ad manager, and Jeffrey Scotese, our new business manager. I would also like to thank those who helped me get to this point: former editor-in-chief Helll'Y D.
