Field faces charges , on three counts of first-degree 4 : sexual assault. 4 . The victims, a 19-year- . old UWP student and 43-year-old Kenosha woman were threatened with a knife. A third victim, a 22-year- old Somers' woman, was assaulted along Highway E, just west of Highway 31. Field was picked up on Friday, Oct.16, after violating conditions of his parole. While being held at the Kenosha Public Safety Building, Field gave investigators a verbal admission to having committed the Parkside area assaults as well as a sexual assault occurring in Racine in 1993. Field is currently being held at the Kenosha County Jail. New information which led to the arrest was found with the help of a new FBI data b·ank. Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory personnel submitted the DNA profile of the four matched cases to the FBI data bank. Field arrested for sexual assault "The Scarlet Letter" opens at uWP 7 7 7 7 8 Amanda Bulgrin Of the Ranger News Staff Lisa Long Special to the Ranger News "The Scarlet Letter" has been called the greatest novel ever written in the Western hemisphere. The story brings a woman named Hester Prynne to America in colonial times. She leaves her husband Roger Chillingworth behind, only to fall in love with a man named Arthur Dimmesdale with whom she has a child named Pearl. Hester lives in sin for the remainder of her life wearing the scarlet letter "A" on her gown to stand for Adulterer. The Nathaniel Hawthorne's work has now been turned into a play by contemporary play- wright Phyllis Nagy. English Literature Professor James S. Dean commented on the most noticeable changes. The adaptation by Phyllis Nagy takes the focus of the playoff of Hester, and places more empha- sis on the other three characters. Dean notes the length of the play versus the novel as a major difference. Not just in page or time length, but in the obvious changes that a play brings. The playwright must focus on divid- iog the story into scenes, and shortening the dialogue. Dean stated, "There are no long narra- tives, and a lot of things have to stand for something else." Symbolism is another important aspect that Nagy uses to emphasize the various themes. For example, Dimmesdale and Chillingworth both have heart problems in the play. It literally represents med- ical problems, but figuratively represents both characters diffi- culty in dealing with love. Another change in the play is the role of Hester's daughter, Pearl. The script calls for a twentysomething actress to play the part of a seven-year-old girl. Nagy gave Pearl a second function as the.chorus in the play. Therefore, Pearl had to be mature enough to understand and discuss the issues at hand. An adult portraying Pearl may be more believable given the perceptions the playwright gives her character. Dean also noticed Nagy's similar portrayal of the colonial Salem, Massachusetts, setting. However, the play uses contem- porary dialogue which 'tints the historical setting of the play. Dean comment; on the adaptation of the play by saying, "It is an updated version of it, and has a modem slant on the situation, it's a modem play." The University of Wisconsin-Parkside Drama Department's 1998-99 Plays at Parkside series begins on Friday, 9 Oct. 23, with "The Scarlet 9 Letter." 10 The Nathaniel Hawthorne 10 novel has been transformed into 10 a play and will be performed in II UW-Parkside's Communication Arts Theatre on Oct. 23, 24, 30 and 31 at 7:30 p.m. A matinee will be he.o on Oct. 23 at 10 a.m. The cast includes: Katie Liddicoat as Hester Prynne, Jillian LaVinka as Pearl, Matty Winkler as Chillingsworth, Simon Jon Provan as Rev. Arthur Dimmesdale, Joseph Pierto as Governor Bellingham, Ami Orva as Miss Hibbins and Gil Gonzalez as Julius Brackett. Leon Van Dyke directs the play with Keith Harris designing the scene, lighting by Skelly Warren, and costumes by Judith Tucker-Snider. SUFAC and PUAB Member-at- Large Rixey Herron Of the Ranger News Staff Luis Venevoglienti is running for the Segregated University Fees Allocation Committee Member-at-Large seat in the coming elections. To qualify for the seat, a student must have a 2.0 grade point average, be in good standing at the University, and be carrying 6 credits. Venevoglienti, who meets the criteria, was the chair SUFAC in 1997 and worked hard on orga- nizing the SUFAC committee. The SUFAC committee, which is part of the Parkside Student Government Association (pSGA), is responsible for the budgeting and allo- cation of segregated fees that come out of student tuition and pays for student programs like the radio station, The Ranger News, the Racine bus service and other at Parkside. The Parkside Union Advisory Board (PUAB) Member-at-Large chair is up for reelec- tion. But according to Corey Mandley, president of the PSG A, "Nobody has run for this position since I've been here. Students usually write in a name for the spot on the ballet." The PUAB Committee is involved with student programming at Parkside. The PUAB member-at-Iarge also is on the Food Service Board. Qualifications for this position are similar to those of the SUFAC Member-At-Large.
