This news came as a surprise to him especially since he had just reentry been reassigned from Parkside's Educational OPPOrtunity Center (EOC) , where he was director, to what he believed was a high- er position In administration, as a special assistant to the Vice Chancellor and a Span- ish instructor. Under Parkside's academic staff rules, all its employees are given one year's notice-of termination. His position on campus will end October, 1988. Hargrove was originally hired as the director of the EOC 1n·1985. It is a federally funded program, which Is currently in the process of being rewritten and submit- ted for its next three-year funded cycle. Hargrove has been active in recruiting low- income and minority stu- dents. When the new position was outlined for him In Septem- ber, he saw it as a move in a positive direction and a way for him to better serve the campus in a wider capacity. G. Gary Grace, assistant chancellor for student affairs, described the new position as being a vehicle which could break Hargrove out of the rut of only working with minority programs. "The new position was de- signed to be a combination of teaching duties and some general staff duties." Grace said. "It was not a promo- tion; it was a lateral move of ances. "The committee is so mis- understood by the campus," Carr said. "Peopie think the committee makes decisions, when In fact, all Its decisions are approved by the Senate." Carr said she pursued the SUFAC chair to repay a per- sonal debt to Parkside. "I feel that the University has done a lot for me," she said. But they got me over there and a month later, they dropped this bomb on me, PI Hargrove told the Ke- nosh News. The letter of termination came from Grace and it gave it no reasons for Hargrove's dismissal. Hargrove has since submitted a formal request for the reasons of his termi- nation. Hargrove went on to corn- ment that he saw his firing as being in direct conflict with OW System President Ken- neth Shaw's commitment to 10creasing mtnortty faculty and staff. I am a- sophomore transfer student who uses the library a lot. I have often used the services of the refer- ence staff and the librarians there have been great at help- Ing me.
