Teams or individuals compete against each other by earning points on a weekly basis for healthy activities such as exercising, eating well and overall wellness. It's a fun, informative way to learn how to improve your overall health. This year's Ranger Well ness Challenge starts on Oct. 6. The Ranger Wellness Challenge is trying to get people to turn simple lifestyle changes into lifelong, healthy habits. It is also trying to help improve and maintain the health of the UW-Parkside community. The Challenge wants to empower participants to take charge of their health and to improve the quality of life for all participants. To participate in the Ranger Wellness Challenge, students, staff, and faculty should sign- up between Sept. 15 and Oct. 10. Teams consist of four people with one team member acting as captain. Support for these programs comes in four ways: training mentors, training professional staff, certification for the programs, and recruitment. Mentor Kenosha & Racine defines mentoring as "a structured and trusting relationship designed to offer mutual guidance, support, and encouragement aimed at developing compassion, competence, and character" . Between the two counties, over 75 mcnroring programs strive to accomplish this goal. Me Kenosha & Racine's . is to educate an these programs so y can meet their for mentoring programs is an in-depth process. Organizations must demonstrate their mastery of subject matter, such as "General organizational well-being", the design and planning of their program, management of the program, and finally, their evaluation of the program. Once a program is certified, the Mentor Kenosha & Racine organization will help the mentor program recruit new mentors. Mentors and mentoring professionals receive support in the form of training and staff development opportunities. Workshop topics include "Mentoring At-Risk Youth", "Recruiting and Retaining Quality Mento " "Screening and ew Mentors". entor Kenosha & Racine helps certified organizations recruit new members by creating community partnerships. Community partnerships are created with businesses, corporations, churches, universities, public officials, and other groups. Those who choose to become partners "financially support. the mentoring community", as well as recruit new mentors within their organization, while raising awareness about mentoring. Community partnerships are an "everyone wins" situation: the mentoring programs receive new mentors and get their name out in the public, while the businesses receive an enhanced image, increased visibility within the community, and th.e chance to provide their employees with a "unique opportunity for personal growth". Currently there are three certified mentoring programs: Big BrotherslBig Sisters of Racine and Kenosha, the Boys and Girls club of Kenosha, and the Circle of Hope. On Sept. 25th, there will be an interactive training session about the building blocks of a mentor! menteerelationship. The Mentor Keuosha & Racine Launch will feature several community partners speaking about the program, in addition to serving as a recruitment opportunity. Thankfully, things are picking up around here. We're getting closer to a solid staff list for the semester, which means our issues should start to be much more consistent in terms of content and length. Even though I'm excited about having a good staff, we can always use more writers! If you are an English major, this is the perfect opportunity for you as you'll need an internship to graduate. We can get you set up with an internship, and hopefully you'll like it enough to return. Never written a news article before? Not a problem I We're always here to help. Everyone's gotta start someplace. Campus activities are increasing in number. which means we will have a harder time keeping up with everything. This also means that we will rely more and more on you, the readers, to inform us of an event coming up that we may otherwise miss. The Ranger News staff does their best, but we're just humans, so obviously we won't know of everything that goes on at Parkside. The goals for this semester SLICEr are to stay on top of the news on campus. This includes things like discussing the Amethyst Initiative, the VIP program sponsored by PSGA, an interview with our Interim Chancellor, and Plan B being offered at the Student Health and Counseling Center.
