The French

Sports and Activity Center ground breaking
brings Tommy Thompson to UWP
Amanda Bulgrin
Of the Ranger News Staff
T~;;;;'y Thompson joins Parkside for the gronndbreaking of the new sports and
activity center.
The $lI.9million needed to successfully
complete the athletic center will come from
Parkside students' tuition. Eight dollars each
semester for twenty years will fund the ath-
letic project.
Along with Thompson, several legisla-
,tors attended the event, including:
Democratic Senator RObert~W~i~rich~';;;'---'_l
Sexual violence is a phenomenon that
affects men, women, and children, but
majority of victims are female. The national-
ly accepted statistics for the United States are
that
1
in 3 women will be raped in her life-
time.
It
is difficult to know how many people
are victims of sexual assault because it is the
most underreported crime in the
us:
only 5
to 20 percent of the crimes are reported to
officials. Seventy-eight percent of rapes
committed are done
by
someone the victim
knows. The United States has the highest
rate of sexual assault in the world, and the
rate of sexual assault is increasing 4 times
faster than any other crime rates in the
nation.
Although UW-Parkside has the luxury of
being a very low crime area, the number of
cases that go unreported have the potential to
exist. If you are a victim of sexual assault
there is help out there for you. Can someone
for help such as a rape crisis hotline (in
Kenosha 652-4333), the police, a friend, or
family member. Even if you have waited
Democratic Senator Kimberly Plache,
Representative James Kreuser,

On Oct. 29, the ground breaking' for the

Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson and
an $11.9 million project to the University of
4: Wisconsin-Parkside.

lion.
The features of the Fieldhouse include:
200-meter track, three basketball courts, four
7: tennis courts, six volleyball courts, two bat-

concessions area, weight room, padded com-
bative room. aerobic fitness center. confer-

While at the ground breaking,
Thompson commented, "A student to busy

Take back the
night
Photos by Amand::.a.=B:.::u::;lg"n.::'n=-- -,
Kelly Voss
Of the Ranger News Staff
On Thursday, Oct. 29, a group ofmore
than 50 people met in the Union to "Take .
Back the Night."
It
is an event that started m
Germany over 20 years ago to protest a
series of sexual assaults against women. ~he
event has taken off worldwide, and a parncu-
lar interest in the event is occuring across
American college campuses.
Rallies, speeches, marches, an open
microphone for victims and w~t~esses to tell
their stories, and candlelight vigils are all
part of "Take Back the Night." The UW-
Parkside event had a surprise visit by ,
Democratic Congressional candidate Lydia
S
d w
ho
spoke out as a parent and
pottswoo ,
citizen against domestic violence and rape.
hours or days, a phone call may lead to the
perpetrator being caught and could prevent
someone .else from becoming a victim.
As unpleasant as
it
may sound, do not
shower yourself or clean up the crime scene
after a rape has been committed, for a DNA
sample could lead to the conviction of the
rapist. Write down a description of the
assailant so that you remember as much as
possible about the rapist.
The "Take Back the Night" rally occurs
once every semester on the Uw-Parkside
campus, but there are people working
towards justice every day. The MAVERAKS
(Men Against Violence Educating Racine
And Kenosha Students) is a campus organi-
zation that focuses on men's issues and
working with young men at local schools to
confront sexual violence. Information about
this group and other campus organizations is
available at the Womyn's Center. Stop by and
ask what you can do to educate yourself and
others in order to prevent and
protest
sexual
assault.
