Students plan to improve Union Improving the Union ts the mission of 12 students who have formed -the group Stu- dents Concerned for Union Improvement. "The purpose of SCUI is to attempt to restore the Union -to what is was intended to be - a place where students, faculty and staff could socia.l- ize comfortably in a pleasant atmosphere. As it exists now we feel the Union does not even come close to satisfying its' mission. The Union Square is poorly lit, dirty, uncom- fortable, decoratively out" dated, and just not aestheti- cally conducive to a pleasant experience. It is a hole and that is why there is hardly anyone down there. We hope to change that," said Kari Dixon. SCUI chair. SCUI was formed this sum- mer in response to several student leaders receiving complaints about the Union, said Dixon. The group put to- gether a memo which cited the problems in the Union and some possible solutions. The memo, which called for immediate action, was sent to Bill Niebuhr, Union Director, the Director of Student Ac- tivities, the Dean of Student Life, two assistant Chancel- lors and the Chancellor. SCUI met with Union ad- ministrators and decided that the Union Square especially should be redesigned in order to better meet student needs. On Friday,' Oct. 3, SCDI met with Skelly Warren, as-. sistant professor of dramatic arts and stage scenic de- signer. Warren has experi- ence in .commerctat design and is currently working on a design for Main Place. Warren talked with the group about what they (elt needed to change in the Square. He agreed to discuss some of the ideas with PhYSi- cal Plant to find out what migh't be possible or impossi- . Union see page 3 Weakland to speak by Kari Dixon Community News Editor Catholic Archbishop Rembert Weakland, chair- -man of the ad' hoc committee that released the second draft of the Bishops' Letter on Catholic Social Teaching and the Economy, will. give a speech entitled "Religion and Economics: Making the Sys- tem Work for Everyone," at 7 p.rn. Tuesday in the Union Cinema. The first draft of the letter was released just after the presidential election last year, and this updated ver- sion has reaffirmed the con- viction that American society must alter its values and act more generously toward the poor, according to the New York Times. At a press con- ference in 'Washington on Sunday. Weakland told the national media that the new 92-page document did not back down on important prin- ciples. but changed some em- phasis because the middle class had not been dealt with adequately. "The Bishop's letter will focus international attention on the interdependency of military spending, poverty and capitalistic economics," said political science Profes- sor Ken Hoover, who will in- troduce Weakland. "Just as the first draft of this letter led to much criticism from the business community, this draft will probably draw fire from the patriotic right." Some of the stances the Iet- ter takes include calling for governmental policies and training programs that gener- ate jobs for all Americans who want to work, eliminat- ing taxes for those below the poverty level, overhauling the welfare system, removing discriminatory barriers against women and minori- ties, changing farm policies to preserve small farms and increasing aid to developing countries.
