Currently, campus police are looking to identify the man in thephotos, because it is suspected thathe is involved with the break- ins and thefts. These photos are from a surveillance. camera at a store. The UW-Parkside Police Department is looking for any help you can give in identifying this man. You can remain anonymous if you prefer. In the meantime, bow can you protect your car and your personal property from being a target of theft and break-ins? Officer Kelly Anrichik gives these suggestions: 1) Lock your vehicle, keep the .windows up. and make sure your trunk is closed all the way. If you lock the doors, you immediately make it more difficult for vandals and thieves to get what they want. Keeping the windows up makes it infinitely harder, as they cannot reach in and take 'what they want, or unlock your doors to take what they want. Making sure your trunk is closed keeps the "bad guys" out, as some cars have backseats that open up into the trunk - if the vandals and thieves figure that out, they can get what they want from your vehicles. 2) During the holidays. lock your purchasesfbelongings in a secure place in your vehicle. For example, lock the purchases in the trunk, or put them in the backseat, covered with' a blanket that closely matches the color of .your car's interior. Your best bet is to take your personal belongings with you, but if you do not want to or cannot, lock them in the glove compartment (most glove compartments have a lock on them), lock them in the center console (if possible), or stash them under a seat. Another way to help protect yourself from theft is to take advantage of the Operation ID program that the UW-Parkside Police Department offers. It is a free service, and you can either stop by the Police Department to participate, or if you live in on- campus housing, they can come to you, Engravings can be done on nearly everything, with any sort of appropriate identifying mark. For example, you could have a small triangle engraved on the corner of your laptop. If that laptop happened to be stolen or lost, the police would know it is yours, because of that mark. Following these tips will help deter theft, because vandals and thieves will look for the easiest target. If your car doors are locked, you are no longer an easy target. Do not forget that if you see suspicious activity in any of the parking lots, you should report it to the police - for all you know, it is your car the thief might be breaking into. • December 18, 2007 New. I took place in Molinaro 323 on Dec. 12 from 9-10 a.m. The background checks will affect those who are faculty, academic staff, administrative staff, classified staff, LTE. and students. When asked why the background checks have not been in effect this year, Peg Lawton, who lead the presentation, said. "When you're coordinating that many campuses it takes a while and it's hard to come to an agreement system wide." Background checks beginning on Jan. I will focus on any previous criminal experience that substantially relates to an individual's job. For example, if someone had a history of writing bad checks. and his or her current job requires him or her to write checks. then the background checks on Jan. ULMER UlmerOOO@uwp.edu After six years of lobbying, supporters of the Compassionate Care for Rape Victims (CCRY) bill finally passed the bill through the State Assembly with a vote of 56-41.0n Tuesday, Dec. II. The bill will require that rape victims are educated about and offered emergency contraception (EC) in Wisconsin hospitals. In January. the Assembly will hold a final procedural vote on the bill, after which the, Senate will reconsider the bill due to an amendment on the legislation that passed in October. "Telling 'rape victims about EC and dispensing upon their request is the standard of care, and it was ignored by too many hospitals for too long," said PPAWI public policy director Chiis Taylor in a press release from the CCRV Coalition. "As an organization, we have been proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with these brave survivors, who were determined .to right this wrong. Thanks to these advocates and the leadership of Representatives Terry Musser and Mark Pocan in the Assembly and Senator Judy Robson, rape victims will finally receive the humane, comprehensive, compassionate care they deserve in every Wisconsin emergency room. A big thank you to these leaders who made the adoption of this bill possible. We look forward to the final procedural vote on the bill in January and finally getting this "We've got issues" bill into law." Emergency contraception is a high dosage of birth control pills that is 99.5 percent effective if taken within 12 hours, and still 75 percent effective if taken within 120hours. Accordi ng to the CCRV Coalition, EC does not have any effect on existing pregnancies. An ex.isting pregnancy is defined as "the successful implantation of a fertilized egg." according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. In May. the State Senate passed the CCRV bill by a vote of 27-6. The amendment to the hill, which passed in October, . allowed hospitals and all hospital employees to deny providing comprehensive health care to rape victims and to only provide standard care. In order to effectively override this amendment, the Senate must pass the bill a second time without the amendment. I or It always amazes me how quickly a semester seems to pass once we reach the end of it. While the semester is still: going, however, it seems to move agonizingly ', slow. Maybe it is some kind of trick of time, hut 1 think it is really that we try to cram too many things into such a short span of time, and when it is over we regret that we did not spend our time more wisely. Either way, the semester is almost over, for better or worse, and we all get a hreak next week to think about what we have accomplished and make plans for next semester, At our last Ranger News meeting, we went around the room and talked about what each of us had learned this semester, Many people learned the proper format of articles and how to use our office equipment. We all learned how to work as a team, which took a lot of time because many of us started out the semester as strangers. It took several months for us to get to know each other and work' effectively. I also learned that things do not always turn out as planned, and often times we need to just work with what we have. I would also like to remind everyone that this is a learning institution and The Ranger News is just another area where students can learn. We are not professionals, but we strive to grow and learn each semester. Like any other student, we each make mistakes, learn from them and continue to improve and strive toward better quality. Next sernester.T would like to focus on making sure that The Ranger News is a learning environment, not just a deadline- driven production line. That kind of stress is not conducive to anyone's learning process. Our faculty advisor, Adrienne Viramontes, described our current atmosphere as "patriarchal," and next semester I would like to move to a more "feminine" structure. I know my male staff members will cringe at that word, but what it really means is that everyone will have more say in the governing of the organization, and we will be more supportive of each other. . 1 hope that you have enjoyed reading The Ranger News this semester, for whatever reason, and thaI you will continue to read in the future.
