You guessed it, UWParkside's "6th Annual Battle of the Bands." The sixth installment of this annual extravaganza promises to be one of the best ever! There certainly have been a lot of changes since the contest was inaugurated six years ago. When "Battle" began six years ago, the winning bands received cash prizes which were donated from the Parkside Activities Board. Two years later the "Baule of the Bands" committee was able to work out a performance on the Summerfest Rock Stage fortheflIStplace band. Regrettably, the radio station that sponsors the Rock Stage was unable to sponsor the program again this year, hence a new grand prize for this year's "Battle", On the brighter side, we have an even better prize for the winning band. Trax-32 recording studio will be donating studio recording time to the wining bands. But wait, will also be awarded with a paid perfonnance at UW-Parkside's End. On the six o'clock news, in Time Magazine, even down toUWP's First Amendment, we are bombarded with stories and opinions dealing with the legality, morality and simple existence of individuals that do not follow the "traditioal lifestyles" ofmainstrearn America, i.e., heterosexuality. Constantly, it seems, we are presented with heated debates over gays in the military, homophobic beatings, and other issues of similar nature. A great deal of these difficulties, I believe, are based on misunderstanding and miscommunication. 00 you - does anyone except foragay or lesbian person themself - really know what it is like to be homosexual in a dominantly (and of len fascistic) heterosexual sociely? For too long, Americans have been content simply to sit back and accuse anything we don't understand or don't agree with of being either outright wrong or morally inferior, almost unavoidably regarding whatever it may be with fear and suspicion (if this is not the case, explain the problem of gays in the military). It is time that we finally conquered our pathetic little stereotypes and machismo self-perceptions and actually learned about someone else rather than lumping them iota some "weirdo"-typecategory. Take the time next week to attend one of the "Out and About" events. Meet and talk to someone that is homosexual, lesbian, or bisexual. You may be surprised to find they aren't much different than "normal" people. To the Editor, In some of the past editions of The Ranger News (mainly April 8 ) I have noticed that some people have taken it upon themselves to slander Andy Patch. To those of you who don't know, when .Andy took on the position as Editor-In-Chief of The Ranger News, there were many obstacles that he had to overcome, the main one being the incredible debt that was created by the three Editors-In-Chief prior to Andy and then left for Andy to deal with. When Andy began as Editor- In-Chief, The Ranger News was in a great deal of debt ($18,000). Through Andy [and a devoted staff], The Ranger News has shrunken that debt by more than 75 percent (to under $4,5(0). As Andy has stated in his editorial, The Ranger News is also understaffed. How do you expect these very few people to put out a newspaper any larger than it has been when there is no one to write forit? As Andy said, the rest of the staff has to write numerous articles each week, which is a lot for one person. You also have to remember that these people are students just like you and me. I give kudos to Andy Patch for the excellent job he has done as Editor-In-Chief of The Ranger News for the 1992-1993 academic year. I am sure that many students take the student newspaper and all of the hard work Andy and his staff have put into it for granted. As far as the reference to being "...beaten down like Mr. Rodney King" is a huge exaggeration. If any racist or harassing comments were being made to you from a memberofthecampuspoliceforce, you should take your complaints to the administration. In reference to the "obscene question," "00 you attend this college?" It is standard amongst all colleges to check !D's of students going into campus events an dorm's. And if it's any consolation, I'm white (not that it makes a difference) and I've been asked that question, and even the "unnecessary stares" from many other campus police departments. If you haven't read the paper lately, no new campus police are getting hired, one position is being eliminated. So before you file a lawsuit, costing the university lots of money on a lawyer, thereby raising everyone's tuition, I'd like to make a suggestion. Talk to the campus police, talk to the administration, and get facts instead of"probably' s" before you start accusing good people of racism. Does she know that there are more rapes occuring on campus? Has she entertained the idea of visiting a HOP or BSU meeting? Does she know how the organizations are run? Is she afraid to be among her minority student body? Afterrecruiting,u here to maintain your quota, what have you done for us lately? Did she ever think of offering more ethnic courses during theday? I believe Ms. Kaplan is too satisfied with her position to care about her minority students. Parkside needs a change. Kretschmann Feature Writer It's been a while since the glory days of Disney. Disney has been regarded as a joke around Hollywood for quite a while-some would even say from the day Walt Disney died. (By the way, the rumor of Walt being cryogenically preserved as a popsickle for future generations is absolutely false. I've gone to great pains to dig up the facts on this one and apparently iris exactly what I wrote in the previous sentence: only a rumor.) Disney, for quite some time, had resembled its failed foray into Sci-Fi in the '70's,TheB/ackHole. Nothing seemed to be able to break free of its destructive forces. Disney was a studio spiraling into a kind of hell. Look at some of the animated "treats" they had been dishing out in the '70's to early 80's. (Anyone who's witnessed The Aristocatscan attest to this.) Yeech! They even lost their TV series for a while (though, I reallyean 'tsay I've ever been much of a fan of anything they've produced forTV since Walt stopped introducing for it-something I never had the pleasure of seeing on live TV). Recently, however, the king of Family Entertainment has returned- and big time. How? Some will say a return of family values. Some will say it's all the anklebiters the yuppies have been spawning recently. I think that is all a big pile of crap. Obviously, Michael Eisner is one of the main reasons and his lesson can teach anyone scratching nickels together what to do with their money. Diversify! Disney has set up a slew of new Disneyland parks including Japan and Europe. In fact, Paul Harvey recently reported that Disney land-Tokyo had about 125 million visitors in its first year which is approximately the entire population of Japan. Disney opened two new studios that have been monikered Touchstone and Hollywood Pictures. It's this approach, along with thereinvestment in the Disney Animation Department, that has resurrected the careening crew of Disney Studios. The Animation Department's revitalization has become front page news ever since thestanIing nominations forBeauty and the Beast at the Oscars two years ago. Now, with the mega success of Aladdin it seems there is no stopping Disney animators. (Of course, some wonder if Menken/ Rice as songwriters will have the same magical touch that Menken/ Ashman had.) Then, there is Touchstone. Touchstone was set up as the PG & PG-B sectionofDisney, thus keeping the Disney name sacred with family enterlainment. Touchstone made some very successful films includingSp/ash, which started Ron Howard's directing career, and Three Men and a Baby, which should have ended Ted Danson's career. (Well, I can dream, anyway!) Touchstone also brought back the idea of a talent stable (though theword talent is being used loosely here in some cases). Richard Dreyfuss, Shelley Long, Bette Midler, and others repeatedly appeared in Touchstone films. Some of these flicks were pretty damned awful, which supports my idea that Touchstone is a return to the old "Studio" system. Instead of going for the glory each time, they were content to make some programmers that were destined for much longer stays on video than celluloid. Look to Moon over Parador and Hello, Again as typical of this philosophy. Now with the rise of the direct-to-video market that has been proven in the horror genre most dramatically (especially a wonderful little company called Full Moon), perhaps some of this mildly entertaining pablum will go directly to the small screen. Hollywood Pictures' direction is far more interesting. So far, it hasn't done a whole lot. She looks both at working with individual teachers and at implementing structural changes. She reports a keen interest in political organizing . When asksd whether thers is a real problem with multicultural education in our public schools, Sleeter says that you nsed only look at the racial composition of Parkside as compared to the surrounding communities to recognize a disproportionate situation. "A dispropor- tionately high percentage of white students end up in the college track courses in our public schools." Sleeter is proactive in her approach, emphasizing factors that we can do something about. She speaks of testing, teaching styles and the attitudes ofteachera. She speaks of turning 10w achieving kids' into 'high achievers.' She tries to teach her teachers that this "sometimes involves dramatic chengs from the way things were done while you were in school." Sleeter believes that teachers can get kids excited and thet the kids will then learn. "I try to teach my teachers to figure out what gets the kids excited," she says. Slseter also speaks fondly of the work she has done with assistant professors that she has met at various conferences, often women of color, assisting them in developing their own research and writing skills so as to publish more successfully. "I try to seek people out and give them academic help and mentoring ... I guess I see myself as giving back to them what was given to me, academ- ically," she quietly explains. Slseter says that she will bank the small cash amount awarded her and use it to buy a new computer. The Miss USA contest brings together young women across the country in search of "the girl next door' who could become the next Miss USA. The pageant consists of evening gown, swimsuit, and interview competitions to establish each contestant's poise and confidence. Erica became interested in.the pageant when an application was mailed to her. "They reviewed my application and sent me the information, saying that they felt I would be a terrific contestant," Sanchez said,"and I set to work inunediately to raise $750 in funding from different sponsors in the Kenosha area." Sanchez News Editor Recently, Main Place featured the Gay and Lesbian Organization's (GLO) Wall, which allowed Parkside students and faculty to voice their opin- ions on the subject of gays and lesbians freely to the public. Unfortunately, by the end of the week, the wall was covered in many derogatory and vicious statements both frightening and thought-provoking to many Parkside individuals. Herein are written some of the views of Parkside administration and students, who explain their opinions on the condition of the Wall. Morten Sunde, President of GLO, said that "I hope that the wall can. be an educational tool that can show both sides of the argument. I have no problem with the wall, 1 am very thick- skinned, but it might be harder for others who also face the neg- ative reactions of the wall. There are many people who are nega- tive in their reactions, which can be seen in statements like 'they should all be shot: or 'they should be killed: but we want people to know the attitudes here at Parkslde. Also, we are thinking of giving the wall to the new chancellor, so that she can see the condition of gay and les- bian issues and relations at this university." When asked about his opinion of the wall, Dr. John C Stockwell, Interim Chancellor at Parkside, said that "I was offend- ed by it. Many of the comments on the wall were vicious and grotesque, and were certainly not fit for a university setting. The university is not a place for that-it belongs in some barn- yard someplace. I have written an open commentary letter about the wall which will be published this week in the Ranger News, and this commentary will go out to all the organizations as well. 1 was frightened by the wall's comments, and I found myself embarrassed and scared standing in front of it.i.and if I was affect- ed by the wall, imagine how other individuals, especially those it was intended for, felt when viewing it in Main Place. That type of literature is not wel~ come anywhere," said Stockwell, "there is no place for it, and the people who wrote it are cowards for writing it and not signing their name to their opinions." Carole Vopat, professor of English, said that "to me, it says that we need to talk about gay and lesbian issues, including gay and lesbian issues as a part of diversity, as a part of the curricu- lum so that people have the opportunity to learn, grow, and speak their minds. I think that people were invited to communi- cate their thoughts, and ii led to the depths of hate and fear. Many were shocked by the mal- ice and ignorance that was shown on the wall. Personally, I think the university has a mis- sion to educate. People were invited to say what they thought, and 1expected garbage ...the threats of physical violence and hatred. We simply have to edu- cate the people, which is the mis- sion of the university environ- ment." When asked for her opin- ion, Ginger Helgeson, coordina- tor of the Women's Center, believed that '1 am worried about the comfort and safety of people here at the university, but I am hopeful that the university pays attention to the message written on the wall." Hopefully, the Wall served its purpose, and by allowing people to vent their views and opinions in a public place, it gave every- one the opportunity to see and acknowledge the viewpoints of others, and to speak their minds as well. However, the Parkside community was offended by the violent and cruel remarks made on the Wall, and may take steps to prevent any further derogato- ry epithets from occu.rring on campus. G.L.O. celebrates annual Out and About Week by Erica L. Sanchez News Editor Throughou t the na tion, there are m~ny u.niversities that take a certain week of the year to hold educational and recreational events for the entire community, and this time was created to inform and entertain all people about the diversity of sexual orienta- tion. On April4-S at DW- Parkside, the Gay and Lesbian Organization (GLO) held its version of this celebration, called Out and About Week, and filled this week with vari- ous discussions and social events designed to appeal to the entire university. When asked about the meaning of Out and About Week, Morten Sunde, presi- dent of GLO, stated that "it does not really have any par- ticular meaning, except that it shows that we exist, and that we wish to be made visible. Those who know more about us are more prone to support our cause, and there are many who don't know who or what we are, and they focus only on sexual ori- entation. Hopefully," added Sunde, "the events during Out and About week have been enjoyable, and I hope that they have been worthwhile." On April 4, GLO began the week with a noon Brown Bag Luncheon in the Teaching Center, where an in-depth discussion took place with. professors on the subject of homosexuality in the classroom. At 4:30 the same day, Morten Sunde there was a reading of the play "Breaking the Codes" in the Studio Theater, and at 7:00 in Union 104/106, a local news columnist by the name of [amakaya gave a free discussion on the important topic of Gays in the Media. Tuesday continued the week's activities with a marketplace function in the alcove beside the Women's Center, where Afterwords Bookstore from Milwaukee sold various gay and lesbian items from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Later that night, the acclaimed film Torch Song TriloglJ, starring Harvey Fierstein, was shown in the Union Cinema at 7 p.m., the first of two screenings on Tuesday and Thursday. Wednesday featured a noon lecture by State Representative Tammy Baldwin, who gave an in-depth talk in Union 207 on several gay and lesbian issues, one of which was the recently proposed Domestic Partnership Laws. The day's events conclud- ed with the 7 p.m. film The Wedding Banquet, which had screenings both on Wednesday and Friday. On the final day of Out and About Week, a social gathering and dance was given in Union Square following the last show- ing of The Wedding Banquet, which lasted from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. Open to the community, the dance allowed everyone to relax, socialize, and reflect on the cultural, educational, and enjoyable events of the past four days. New PSGAPresident explains goals for organization by Erica L Sanchez News Editor On Friday, AprilS, the Parkside Student Government Association (PSGA) conducted its weekly meeting, where they discussed the normal political issues and events tha t come before the Parkside senate. However, that particular meeting was different, for on that day PSGA inaugurated Vincent E. Bomer as president of their orga- nization. When asked about his goals as president of PSGA, Borner said that "primarily, I will strive to get the constitution restructured so that we can eliminate all the red tape that it contains, and get the senate to work with the exec- utive staff. However, I would really like to make sure that the student body has good represen- tation in PSGA, so that everyone can accomplish their goals at this uni versi ty. I would also like to see a multicultural center set up for the purpose of educating the campus community, and 1 will work to have a lot more minority representation and involvement on the campus as a whole. Also," added Bomer, "there should be more faculty-student involvement with PSGA, so that we can all work together to meet the goals of education." Borner continued by saying that he is elated about being elected, and "I am grateful for being given this opportunity to get the school headed in a direc- tion to do better than the past PSGA administrations. It will give me the chance to right the wrongs of the past presidencies, and the opportunity to show that PSGA is not a joke. We have been bombarded in the past with the accusation that PSGA is a joke-and hopefully 1can show that-it is important that every- one, including PSGA, is involved with the betterment of this uni- versity. I am not saying that the past presidents were bad," said Bomer, "maybe they were just misdirected- all of them had different agendas, different goals-and my goal is to make the student body more aware of everything about the educational process, to make sure that stu- dents receive the best education possible. I want to see that stu- dents are aware of what is going on around them-and I wish to continue my senate work- wh.ich is being the voice of the student. "I am willing to work with everyone," Borner added, "and I want to keep everything about me real, with no misconceptions or stereotypes. I wish to lead PSGA in a more positive direc- tion, away from the past and into the future-and my personal philosophy remains the same: lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way." Bomer felt that there should be an informal get-together during the semester, a meeting that "brings together the faculty, the staff, and the student body, where people can voice their concerns on what can make this university a better place in which to receive an education. People look at PSGA and say that it is full of problems, but all the UW- System schools had these com- munication problems, so it is not a fair assessment. The past PSGA administrations did many good things, and the presidents did the best they could with an apathetic student body. I am not being derogatory or judgmental towards the students-they sim- ply have not been informed. There has been a lack of unity between PSGA and the student body, and 1 wish to have com- munication between the faculty, the staff, the students-and PSGA. "1'bis is the worst year for Latinos because of affirmative action, bilingual education, language rights, and civil rights. It's been under attack," ssid Anthony Flores, Latinos Unidos president. Last year, the VicePresident of the United States was at the conference. This year, unfortunately, he was not. Some of this year's speakers included Jimmy Cabrera, the Honorable Luis Gutierrez (1).ll.l, Dr. Samuel Betances (professor of Sociology at Northeastern University), and the Honorable Nilsa Cruzperez (New Jersey General Assembly). Cabrera spoke at Parkside last year. Workshops keyed in on five areas: Empowerment, Community, Diversity, Pride, and Unity. In a Community workshop, Tina Anchondo, a Parkside student, listened to Cruz-Perez discuss voter's rights, as a lot of Latinos are concerned and don't know what their rights are. "She gave me some ideas on how I can get my mom to vote," said Anchondo. Anchondo has been trying to convince her mother to register for some time now. Flores was impressed with Gutierrez and said,"We're try109 to get him on campus. He's an excellent speaker!" Gutierrez is a member of Congress in the House of Representatives. College fairs and federal agencies for employment were on hand to speak with highschool students, college students, and community members. This year, over 4000 people were estimated to have attended the conference. Latinos from UWWhitewater, UW-Milwaukee, UW-Eau Claire, and UWMadison met with Parkside students at the conference. All three went deaf just for fun. Pete Townshend of The Who, famous for loudly smashing his guitars to bits for concert finales, gave Hearing Education and Awareness for Rockers (H.E.AR.) a $10,000 donation after announcing his hearing damage due to loud music. Townshend said, "The real reason that I haven't performed live for a long time is that Ihave very severe hearing damage. It's manifested itself as tinnitus, ringing in the ears at the frequencies that I play the guitar. It's very, very difficult for me to work at music. '! Eric Clapton says that one of his ears is at least half deaf. "When I'm onstage, I have to stand a certain way to be able to hear everything. Otherwise, Ican only hear half of what's going on." And Ted Nugent admits, "My left ear is there just to balance my face, because it doesn't work at all." H.E.AR. is a non-profit organization with international affiliates. Kathy Peck, a singer and bass player who suffered a forty percent hearing loss in one ear, founded H.E.A.R. with Dr. Flash Gordon in 1988 after both attended an excessively loud concert at a local club. Some of H.E.AR.'s newest supporters are the rock groups Primus, Faith No More, Spinal Tap, and The Doors. Parkside wanted to be "vISIble" during homecoming week. October 11 was National Coming Out Day, celebrated worldwide, in which the gay, lesbian, and bisexual community urges those in the "closet" to declare who they are. . Hot pink flyers and stickers with an upside-down hot pink triangle on a black background were distributed on campus by GLO members. The Women's Center passed out the flyers in conjunction with their bake sale on October 11, sbowing support. Parkside's own Kimberly Blanchette will star in "Outloud," a comedy and poetry reading, on October 25 in Union Cinema. Blanchette, a GLO member, is both a professional comedian and nationally published poet. Blanchette was elected third runner-up in Parkside's Homecoming King contest. The contract stated that, "upon vacating the premises, the structure either be terminated or donated to Parkside," said Assistant Chancellor, G. Gary Grace. The structure. built in 1989. is designed as a medical facility and is located on the east end of the Parkside campus behind Tallent Hall. Mter the building was vacated this past spring. Parkside officials hosted an open house for organizations and departments on campus to present proposals for the use of the vacated building. Also, Kim's naivete in the "pleasure seeker" episode was shown to be reluctance, rather than fear or ignorance, by a show that featured a.n alternate reality of Kim's life. In this reahty, he was engaged to marry a beautiful young cellist (maybe he met her at the .Iuilliard"). As previously stated, any guy, no matter how inexperie~ced,. should realize when someone IS "hitting on him." Thank those clever Voyager producers for realizing that Kim reacted "out of character" for a young man, and for giving him a reason to ignore the lovely "pleasure seeker" woman last season. Paris and Chakotay's characters have been explored in several episodes already. It's refreshing that ,",yager is letting Paris' "bad side" (namely, his womanizing) be "a cross that he has to bear," rather than just your "run of the mill expected behavior" for a Starfleet , , officer. Score one for the women s movement! It also is encouraging that they are trying to show Chakotay in a less restrained light. Last season, Chakotay was almost the caricature of a stoic, unemotional Indian. So, it's good that the producers have recognized that his character needs some "bad points" to balance out his pluses. Providing that Voyager doesn't only have sixteen episodes again in the second season, I'd say that it has done just about everything right. Now, if they'd only make Janeway stop screaming, the show would be perfect. oBarb Churchill Staff Writer The second season on Star Trek: ,",yager has been in full swing for about two months now, so I thought that I'd take another look at how it's doing. Were any of the things I talked about previously fixed, and IS the show getting any better? In a word, YES! Voyager is getting better thanks to more character developme~t of Tom Paris, Harry Kim, and Chakotay. These characters were largely ignored last se~son,but t~ey have "gotten their due during this season, and there are still m~nyshows left. This is indeed encouragmg (as Tuvok might say.) The further "fleshing out" of Harry Kim's character has been particularly welcome. Last season, it was established in the season opener "Caretaker" that Kim was an accomplished clarinetist that had studied at the renowned Juilliard school. So, as a clarinetist myself, it really rankled me that he never was shown playing his clarinet! So what if he'd left his clarinet behind-Replicate a new one!Any musician would do this, if music was truly that important to him. And if this guy really went to Juilliard, music would be that important, so he should h" shown playing his clarinetFrequently. This season, he finally has replicated himself a clarinet (thank God for that twenty-fourth century technology!) and he's been shown playing in his quarCD Review ~ P t rea ar y oTy Wilda Entertainment Editor If Led Zeppelin had been born in the gothic rock heyday of the eighties and, if Robert Plant hadn't been kicked so hard in the groin before becoming a vocalist, the result would sound something like Tea Party. Celtic spiritualism, Indian instrumentation, alternative style morbidity, and philosophical lyrics mix to give Edges of Twilight its signature sound. The string work of Stuart Chatwood and Jeff Martin is tight and professional on the standard and bass and guitar parts and even better on mandolin, harpguitar, tabla, djembe and harmonium. Jeff Burrows keeps the discord of these instruments together with an understated percussion serving in the background as glue holding things in place. And over it all there is the voice of Martin, a mid-range vocal that never quite hits the sub-sonic lows of most goth singers but also .never veers into the heavy metal shriek it seems to threaten to. Highlights of the CD are the opening power chords of "Fire in the Head," a standard invitation to come into the darkness to play, and the super-long (6+ minutes) "Sister Awake," a showoff piece in which Tea Party shows just how-many instruments they can use and styles they can touch in one song. Lyrically, the band draws heavily on spiritualism and Celtic poetry ("Does the sun renounce it's kingdom! as the shadows fall," from "Turn the Light down Low" is a fairly typical line) that sometimes has you wondering whether they just finished a class in the works ofYeats. Petak's (RRacine)sudden flip-flopon the stadium vote? None? You folks must have been reading my column from day one! Nice going! In case any of you missed it, Petak decidedto change his vote on the stadium issue from NO (whichhe'd voted twice)to YES, givingthe OKto a special "stadium taxing district," which includes Racine County. Racine County is one of the few counties in-Wisconsin that DOESNOTcurrently levy a sales tax. The state senate's action basically says, "We don't care that you don"t levy a sales tax. Start doingit for thisNOW." But as previously stated in this column, the constitutionality of this raises grave doubts. Number one, CAN the state arbitrarily force a county to levy a tax that it doesn't want? Racine County residents are adamant in their refusal to field another tax. This was reflected in the recent vote by the RacineCounty Supervisory Board, when they voted 28-0 against implementing a sales tax, even if the state insisted. Number two, the issue of the special "stadium district" is a problem.When only part ofthe state has to pay for something, should the state REALLYbe involved?And if the state demands that it IS involved, perhaps the whole state, rather than just part, should have to pay for the stadium. Otherwise, it probablyisn't legal. Lastly, forcing a county that never has levied a sales tax to suddenly start doingit will probably cost more money than the amount that state wants to collect!Think about this one: the infrastructure JUST ISN'T THEREin Racine County, because it doesn't have a sales Observations Taking a Walk • C. J. Nelson Ranger Columnist Let's join John for a walk. He has just finished jogging on Kenosha's lakefront. He is now walking back to his car, which is parked in the Kemper Center parking lot. John is wearing a black and silver sweat suit that has seen better days. It has some holes in it and is frayed, but it is very comfortable. When he works, John wears a suit and tie which befits his position as a human resources manager at Snap-On. John is not a small man-he stands about 6' 5" and 240 pounds. Walking down Third Avenue, he notices that behind him is a police cruiser. The officer appears to be watching John closely.John is looking at one of the opulent houses. John has noticed some windows need repair. The peace officer has noticed that John is looking at the house. He pulls up and says, "Youwouldn't be thinking of visiting that house later tonight, would you?" "No, of course not," John responds. "I just noticed that a window frame needs to be repaired." "Right," states the officer. "Youlook a little out of place for this neighborhood. Why don't you leave now while there is no trouble?" John says nothing and continues to his car. This is not the first time John has encountered this scenario. A couple months ago, he was looking for a house in the White Caps development He was driving his self-restored '67 Camaro. He was stopped because his car looked "out of place" and told to leave. John found'out that the police officers have the right tax. People would have to he hired, just to "commence tax- . ing." Forms would have to be filledout delineating what's being sold, so the tax can be properly implemented.This tax will be a logistical nightmare for Racine County. By forcing Racine County to levy this tax, the state really did "stick it to" us. County residents can hope that the Racine County Supervisors will back up their threat to file a lawsuit against the state. The Supervisors must "put their money where their mouths are." Then perhaps Racine Countywill stop being the doormat for Wisconsin's Senators. AB for Senator Petak, perhaps the hest thing that he can do for himself is to resign. As Racine County Board Supervisor Dan Sharkozyput it, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." to stop him because of the "Terry" rule. This rule allows a officer to stop someone as long as he can "articulate a suspicion" when questioned. John's friends in the police tell him that racist attitudes are prevalent on the force, but nothing is ever done about it. Our walk with John is over. What race is John? Should he have been "Terry stopped?" If John is an African-American male, can you understand why AfricanAmericans may have a different view of the police than whites? Is this really the kind of country you want? Making sense out of it all: The Great Racial Divide • George Harris Jr. Columnist After fifteen months, the "Trial of the Century" has finally ended. The long awaited verdict was reached in less than five hours. When the not guilty verdict was read, there was celebration and gnashing of teeth. There is still debate over whether the race card was played during the trial. I think the "Dream Team" simply took advantage of prosecution mistakes. The prosecution hung their hat on Det. Mark Fuhrman and his testimony. Remember the "Dream Team" didn't invent the sloppy LAPD, the inept criminologists or the racist cops. Some of the same people who told us that we should accept the verdict of the Rodney King cops tell us we shouldn't accept this one. They go so far as to suggest that black jurors couldn't or wouldn't convict black defendants. If that is the case, they learned from the white jurors in Simi Valley. After all, they couldn't convict the white cops who beat up Rodney King. Some have even questioned the intelligence of black people as jurors. This offends me because they are painting all blacks with the same brush. People also forget that the other three nonblack jurors came up with the same verdict. The polarization of the country has been orchestrated by the media covering this case. They showed us the contrast between the cheering African-Americans and the somber disgusted whites. They rarely showed whites who agreed, or blacks who disagreed with the verdict. In the end, we must live with the verdict. It was rendered fairly. We have to believe the jurors when they said race wasn't a factor. I think that the aftermath of the trial is a mirror shown to the face of America. We looked in that mirror and saw the monster of racism either staring us in the face or lurking over our shoulders. AfricanAmericans are simply reminded that we s.tilllive in a racist society. A Letter to CJ C.J. Nelson, I find your article offensive. Did you stop and consider for a moment that maybe O.J. didn't do it? Or do you see "black" and assume "killer?" It is absurd to assume that Judge Ito, Johnnie Cochran and the jury are as racist as the ALL white jury, judge and lawyers that freed the killer of Emmit Till. Youlook at O.J. and assume that he did it. That is the same reason our police departments, judicial system and entire society has been corrupt throughout history. Did you stop and think that the officers who investigated the O.J. case think just like you, assuming that he's guilty, and perhaps even "fixing" the evidence? Did you stop and think ahout how many black people don't have the money to fight this putrescent system and are in jail? Did you stop and think that maybe you're wrong? All types of minorities have been going to jail for years, not because they're guilty, but because racists never stop to think! This article fueled ignorance. Every time that I turned around I heard white people saying, "They're just going to let him walk? Where's our riot?" The point remains that we were not on the jury, and we didn't hear all the relevant evidence. You assumed he was guilty the night he went to jail. Now you feel shocked and cheated that O.J. has heen acquitted .... How can that be? Did you ever stop and think that maybe an innocent man has been in jail for more than a year? Innocent blacks have been going to jail for 462 years, long before America became a nation. It is more convenient for you to ASSUME. It happened for the Runnin' Rangers last Saturday at the UWP Cross Country Invitational. Six out of Parkside's top ten finishers earned personal bests as the Rangers took fifth out of 22 teams. "This is the best showing for our team this year," said Head Coach Lucian Rosa. The upper classmen also showed their might, allowing only one freshman into the top seven. "I'm glad our upper classmen showed up to run," said Rosa. "I'm very happy with Andy Sarnow. He is close to where he is capable of running." Sarnow ran the fastest Parkside time of the year (26:48) and finished 13th in the race. Senior Jesse Decker returned to form with his best time of the year (27:13) and Dave Sheriff continued his solid season 127:23). It was open to all stu- dents, staff and faculty. Any student can get a copy of the "Design for Diversity" catalog from the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (OMSA) at UWP. Hazel Symonette, Ph.D., UW System Administrator of Multicultural Affairs said that students need to be given education and life experiences. "To do otherwise equals educational malpractice." We should be "Embracing human di fferences, not only race, but female, sexual orientation, etc ....We are standing on the shoulders offolks who had to struggle against and do much more with much less. We are the sons and daughters of tomorrow's longing for a better day, a better way. The future is counting on us to hold the line." The UW system founded the 10- year D4D plan in 1988. The plan relies on efforts of each UW institution, to hire faculty and academic staff, to admit and teach students, and provide the atmos- phere that invites diversity and encour- ages cooperation. The purpose was to equip all students with professional and personal skills necessary 10 be successful in their lives. They did riot create it as a "quick fix" but as a long term effort to end economically disadvantaged and minorities that were unable to attend UW System schools. The D4D encourages: System-wide goals for under-represented student access and retention; Improvement of the multiculturaJ environment in the class- room; Creation of financial aid programs to remove barriers and address issues of accessibility; Cooperative efforts by the UW System to the public and private sector to maintain equal opportunity pro- grams. UW-Parkside has lost 63% of Latino and African American faculty and staff, while minority enrollment has gone up 19"10.According to the 1997 fall enroll- ment, student races are: Native American Indian-23, Foreign-34, Asian-67, Hispanic-242, African American-301 and Caucasian 3,616. Meetings will be held with the regional coordinators to choose the city and the date, although Chionesu slated the reunion will not conflict with the Million Family March planned for the same year. Sisters are also encouraged to start MWM chapters in areas where none exist. The national level will provide assistance in establishing the chapters and helping them to connect regionally. Sisters are also asked to plan and hold African Village Community Town Meetings to deal with issues in their communities. The national chapter will be providing assistance with these pro- jects in the near future. The MWM is also planning to initi- ate a national and international fight against drugs in the communities, fami- economically disadvantaged people in the UW System; 2. Educate all students for an increasingly multicultural society in Wisconsin, our nation and the world; 3. Improve recruitment and retention efforts to provide better access for target- ed minority students so they can function more effectively at our universities; 4. Improve evaluation efforts in minority student enrollment/retention and facul- ty/staffrecruitment and retention; 5. Remove financial barriers that prevent nrinorities and economically disadvan- taged people as a realistic option; 6. Increase the number of minority facul- ty/stafftbroughout the UW System; 7. Establish effective partnerships with the public schools, the VTAE System, state government, the cornmunity and the pri- vate sector to help the UW System's efforts to improve nrinority and diversity education. Before the Rally, there was a Design for Diversity meeting from 9:30-1 I :00 near the Chancellor's office, At the meeting a GLO representative said, "Why does the D4D plan ouly address the issue of race?" Hazel Symonette, PhD" UW System Administrator of Multicultural Affairs said that the D4D plan has gay and lesbian groups included, but they have not been addressed, It just hasn;t been done, because it is not as widely thought of as a 'minority group' as other cultures are. However, she agreed that it is an issue that UW System schools must address because sexual orien. tation is just as important as race relations. In a GLO meeting, the members were upset that their needs were not addressed through the Rally or within the meetings that were held before and after the Rally, "Sexual orientation is not acknowledged as a minority group, neither are women or dis- abled persons," said a member. "We don't choose to be homosexual, like many people think. We are born this way, just as people are born with different skin colors." Sexual orientation is a large target for harassment. Just like when white supremists on campus wear Nazi sym- bols openly, there have also been obscene clothing worn that represents 'gay bashing'. Gays on campus have also been stalked and feared for their lives at times. "Neumann voted to abolish the US Department of Education," said Feingold. "He wants to reduce the number of Pell grants. n Pells grants are non-repayable tuition grants from the government given to students who financially qualify, Feingold said he has voted for federal Pell Grants and Federal Work Study.
