A couple of weeks ago Professor King was awarded an Individual Artist Grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board for her fic- tion writing. Anyone is eligible for this award, and the only require- ment is that the winners somehow present their work to the public. She plans on doing this sometime in the fall with a reading of her story at The Old Book Corner in Racine. Out of approximately 500 entries, her work was recognized along with the other winners - all nationally known professionals. Professor King has been teaching at Parkside for 3 1/2 years. She holds a master's degree in creative writing from the University Texas, El Paso. Before coming to Parkside she taught Introductory and advanced poetry writing in both Greenbay and Oshkosh. Also, she has had numerous poems pub- lished in various literary journals. When asked what she plans on doing with the money, she said that she would like to take some time off this summer to continue working on her fiction writing. As you may recell. Terri held forth in past Rangers under the column "Leissez-Fsire." Terri's taken up residence in sunny, shaky California and faxed us this update from the front as it were. If you've never woken up screaming you should try it some- time. The perfect opportunity hap- pened in Southern California on January 1 7 when a 6.6 earthquake gave the Southland a rude wake-up call. The quake lasted for what I will always remember as the longest 30 seconds of my life. The epicenter was Northridge, California-a city approximately 15 miles away from where I live in Burbank. I moved here shortly after I graduated from UW-Parkside in December 1991. After I arrived in Burbank in April 1992, I have endured hospitallza- tlon, the L.A. riots, floods, fires, and earthquakes. When I lived in Wisconsin, I survived tornadoes, blizzards, and bitter cold. But this earthquake terrified me more than anything. Aftershocks in the mom- ing are not unusual. The Big Bear/landers quakes from June 1992 rocked California months after they happened. That was what I thought I woke up last Monday. The only thing was that the rocking wouldn't stop. I got up and screamed. because the power was out and I couldn't see my hus- band, Ti m. We reached for each other with our fingertips and tried to get to a doorway, the strongest structure in the building. The rock- ing was so loud that we couldn't hear the crashing to the floor, like pictures, books, a television, a computer monitor, We didn't know if we'd trip over anything. Cracks formed in the walls and plaster fell. Our apartment was pitch black. When we opened the door, the city was also. Tim found a flashlight and every- thing that wasn't on the floor there now. We had no phone, electrici- ty, or water. As we felt powerful aftershocks, we searched for a radio. We didn't know if los Angeles was still standing. That was when panic set in. Common sense wasn't in anyone's vocabu- lary. For instance, Tim continuous- ly told me to get clothes on. I thought I was fine in my Bugs Bunny-after all, they covered me and I was warm. I didn't realize that we had to leave and go to his brother's apartment to make sure his family was okay. So after yelling at each other for a few min- utes, I put my clothes on. We weren't angry because the only time a couple should yell at each other is during a disaster. We went down tour car and found plaster all over our car. Our car sits under our apartment building, so poles support half our building. This frightened me more because buildings dose to the epi- center collapsed with parki ng structures like ours. If the quake was any stronger, I'm sure our building would have suffered the same fate. They also had no power 50 we tried to keep the two boys, aged six and nine, from being afraid. I don't think Tim did a good job. He told his nephew, "You know the only reason we had this quake, don't you? Because you were a bad boy! Just Kiddingl" We'll be paying for his many years of therapy soon. I tried to keep my nephews occupied. I said, "'Hey this reminds me of the 'Star Trek' episode where everyone was trapped and Captain Picard kept those kids in the turbo lift from being afraid by making them sing that French song." So I sang but the kids didn't. If there was power, I would have seen the funny looks they gave me. My brother-In-law, Gary. saw a paper boy still deliver- ing papers minutes after the quake. Cary asked, "Anything about the earthquake in there?" Luckily, we had an earth- quake survival kit of food and water prepared. Not so many peo- ple are that prepared. I cannot stress how important it is to have thls, because when an earthquake happens. it is like and apocalypse. Supermarkets and drugstores were empty of bottled water. flashlights and 0 batteries. There were lines not only inside the grocery stores but outside also because people couldn't get in. When the sun came, we heard that the epicenter was Northridge, where obviously Cal State Northridge is. Again, Californians start over. "Rebuilding L.A." is now an entry in the Californian's cliche dictionary. But that is exactly wh people do here, and that is what I admire Southern Californians for. It is fortunate that this quake hap- pened at 4:31 a.m. on a holiday, because there would have been more people on the collapsed hij ways. As the freeways get con- structed again, I listen to the mill- , tary helicopters f1ying over our building and still feel the after- shocks. Within the span of writing this article, I have felt at least three aftershocks ranging in the four point range. My mother asked when she can expect me coming back to Wisconsin. I said not •• soon. Because in any part of the I country, you pick your disaster. In instances such as tornadoes and hurricanes, one can prepare. But in an earthquake, one can't. This is the price for living in a beautiful warm and sunny area. We stlII have a lot to thankful for. In our home, the onll thing that was broke was a small lamp - amazing in a quake that moved our refrigerator and stove at, least six inches. An the best news I is that the earthquake halted direc- tor Aaron Spelling's productions. I That means that the sappy dramas r "Beverly Hills 90210" and L "'Melrose Place" won't have any new shows for a while. Darn. Butthen I heard seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones say on "'larry King live" that Souther California sits atop over 300 faults. Every one of these faults must release tension, which results in earthquakes. Okay, that made me feel better. later that week, President Clinton visited Burbank to declare Southern California, again, a disas- ter area. Clinton has been out here so often that he should schedule a trip out here every three months. Then he should set up a blanket for dispersing funds at those times. L.A. Times reported that this quake resulted in about $30 billion worth of damage, making it the most costly naturally disaster in American history. In the 1983 book, Whar You Should Know About Earthquakes, the author Joseph W, Foraker writes that a "catastrophic earthquake" could result in dollar losses of tens of bil- lions of dollars. This earthquake has already cost $30 billion, and the death toll is in the sixties. Having respect for those who have lost their lives, it may not be appropriate to call up some- one in California and ask, "Hey, what's shaktn'r- Until you are in an earthquake, you will never know how It feels. Although you shouldn't scream, panic or run, that is what you do when you watch your belongings fall. You also don't know if the structure you have your home is going to buckle under your feet.
