Most clubs, organizations, fraternities, sorori- ties, majors, minors, and offices on cam- p~s had a display area for the public to see, including the University Police Department. UPPS had a collection of handheld protection devices and alarms for the public to try. Some of Tartuffe's actors, Matthew Schnaare, Matty Winkler, Allison Phillips and Naomi Buchanan walked around campus handing out fly- ers and dressed in attire for the play. .WIlL Rock radio station was live on campus with air personalities Phillnzinga and Joni Meyers. The University of Wisconsin Parks ide Open House, held on Saturday, April 25, from 10-2, was a great success. Past, present and perspective students from the Kenosha and Racine area attended, as well as Faculty and Staff. Kenosha radio station "95 WilL Rock", and this year's Miss Wisconsin also attended. Admissions Counselor Joel Buschmann said, " We are happy that the Faculty and Staff were very involved in this event.i..This is a great building block for next year's Open House." Most of the Faculty and Staff were busy at tables and walking around meeting new people. According to Buschmann UW- P has a major problem, it has a stigma of being a commuter college. The Faculty Senate voted on the resolution sent by the University Committee which passed, 14-3. President Mandley was very disappointed by the Faculty Senate's resistance to student representation. "If all the other governing bod- ies. such as student affairs, academic staff and administration, have student representation, then so should the Faculty Senate." Mandley continued by saying, "This is by no means the end of the battle with the Faculty Senate for student representation. If I have to pre- sent a resolution every month for the rest of my term until there is a solid commit- ment by the faculty, that is what I will do." Mandley urges student to take a stand because it is your tuition, your fac- ulty and your school. " I feel that students have a right to have a vote in who administers education to them," said Mandley. President Mandley stated, "I am very disturbed by this alternate resolu- tion because it had no.real plan to get student representation on the searches." In an attempt to bargain with the Faculty Senate, President Mandley presented a counter-resolution on the floor which asks for only one student, to be appointed by PSGA, to sit on the committee. The Faculty Senate felt that PSG A should not hold the power to appoint students to these committees and that it should be left up to the depart- ment. President Mandley also disagrees with this. He feels that PSGA holds power over student government. Dr. Kinchen, Music Department, made a friendly amendment that department and PSGA have the power to appoint this student together. The Faculty Senate voted 9-8 for this, but this was not two thirds majority so it failed. The Faculty Senate then voted the counter resolution for PSGA to appoint the student and the vote was 2- Amanda Bulgrin Editor-in-Chief The Parks ide Student Government Association unanimously passed a resolution on April 10, recom- mending that the Faculty Senate man- date that two students sit on Faculty Search and Screen Committees. Presidents of PSG A are allowed to make resolutions to the Faculty Senate which is composed of 35 members from all departments who deal with curriculum issues and a variety of other tasks. On April 21, President of PSGA, Corey Mandley, presented a sim- ilar version of the resolution to the Faculty Senate. Student Voices: Should The University Police Carry Guns? I am a 17 year old female at UW-Parkside. I live on campus, plan to major in criminal justice, and am a freshman. My opinion of whether or not the UWP police should carry guns or not is, yes they should carry guns. I realize that most of the students against it argue that nothing ever happens here at Parks ide. I am from a town of about 15,000, and that is where NOTHING never happens. I have heard several times that Kenosha is part of a drug traf- fic ring. Being a future police officer, I would worry about the violence that comes along with the battle against drugs. Sure the students here are not causing a problem with the police that would require the need for guns, but there are several non-students that drive through the campus. My final thought would be, if I were pulling someone over and all I had was a little can of pep- per spray and a night-stick, I would pray that the person doesn't have a gun under his or her seat. I think if the police have the proper training with the usage of weapons, then they should be able to sport them in their holsters. I am an African-American, 20 year old female with a major in English. I permanently reside in Milwaukee, WI. At Parks ide, we rarely see vio- lent crimes committed. The average complaints in "Police Beat" are traffic violations, personal property thefts, and' fire alarms. These things are serious in some aspects and to answer these kinds of complaints is University Police's job. However, in the last five issues of "Police Beat," I have seen only two vio- lent crimes. One of them was a student being battered, and the other one was harassment of a female student by a for- mer boyfriend. Most of the rest of the potentially dangerous crimes on campus go unreported. When are campus crimes so violent that police need to have guns at their sides? I feel that with guns, the University Police are too intimidating. Many students are wondering, what brought on the decision for UWP Police to carry guns, and have they had any updated training? In addition to firearm safety training, they should also have additional sensitivity training geared towards the diversity on our campus. They have to deal with people from every background, and some students may feel safer when the police have guns, but this prompts others to protect themselves from the police. They should consider the students' past expe- riences with police. A lot of people object to the way UWP Police deal with their situations, and feel that by the Police having guns that the situations can only get worse. This new rule should be further investigated, and when the students are told more about why the police have made this decision, and what kind of new training they have had, then it should be allowed. I am not afraid of the university police carrying firearms. What I am afraid of is a situations where firearms would better protect me and they are not available to the police officers on cam- pus. I feel comfort in the fact that the university police have the proper and necessary tools available to do their jobs. Their jobs aren't necessarily to protect us from each other, but from pos- sible outside threat. People other than students; faculty and staff are on or around our campus. Petrifying Springs Park is a prime example. Many people visit Pets Park, and lets face it, we may no know too much about them. As a commuter, I sometimes have to walk out to my car late at night. In addition to the dark, the woods are all around our campus and the distance to the parking lots could provide the per- fect backdrop for a crim inal to take advantage of female students life myself. I feel good about having a police force on campus, especially knowing that they carry the necessary weapons of protec- tion. Who knows what kind of weapon a criminal may carry. In the event of something horrible like an attack occur- ring, I would like the person responsible for keeping me safe to have the same strength of weapon as an attacker may have. I also have the confidence in our university police that they know how to use their guns safely and properly. The cops on campus are real police offi- cers. They are trained professionals and know what their guns can do. But they are also properly trained how to use them and not to use them at all, if possi- ble. I am willing to bet the officers dread the day they may have to unhol- ster their guns, but also know that it is sometimes a necessary part of the job. I'm glad the police carry firearms, it makes me feel safe. A gun can be dangerous when it is in the wrong hands. But in the hands of trained pro- fessionals like the university police offi- cers, a gun is a useful protection device and the danger involved decreases dra- matically.
