The card will be marketed under the I name RangerCARD and will serve as f both the official campus 1.0. and a debit card and service access card. After almost three years of investigation and work by the One Card Task Force, the new I.D. will debut in the Fall of 1997. Leading intothat will be a required campus recarding project beginning April 24 and ending May 9. It is hoped that all return- ingstudents, as well as all faculty and staff, will stop in the temporary recarding center to have 1.0. photos taken. This is a free process. Students waiting until next fall will be charged the $20 initial card fee. Location of the temporary recarding center will be in room III of Molinaro. Three color video cameras will handle. the photo taking and processing of infor- mation. ESTABLISHED1972 Student government Leaders ask Chancellor Smith to review campus police RANGER REPORT The University of Wisconsin-Parks ide stu- dent Senate unanimously passed a "Sense of the Senate" resolution which calls upon Chancellor Eleanor Smith to immedi- ately form a university- wide committee to review the mission, activities and performance of the University Police and Public Safety (UPPS). The resolution notes there have been a growing series of reports by students and others of the police refus- ing to help students in dis- tress. At the same time there have been reports of students needlessly being treated as suspects by the police. These circum- stances have been charac- terized by the resolution as constituting "an increas- ingly repressive environ- ment", At the March 14 Parks ide Student Government Association (PSGA) meeting several Senators reported dissatis- faction as the performance _ofthe police, Other Senators made mention of the difficult job that the police seem to face and of the unique environment that a University setting can appear in the eyes of an officer trained to fight the crime of a broader based society. One PSGA member even. reported an incident in which an offi- cer was helpful. However, in the ensuing two weeks, in discussions with friends, classmates and con- stituents, the members of the Senate began to realize how widespread the dissat- isfaction with the Police has become, Sen. Karl Heinitz introduced the Resolution. Friendly amendments were accepted by Sen, Troy Getter and Sen. Zac Pawlowski. On a motion of acclamation by Sen. Jason Weniger, the resolution carried. This is because of many complaints from the students, regarding the University Police and Public Safety (UPPS) departments treat- ing them unfairly. President Jacobson said this committee is, "to make sure they [UPPS) are fol- lowing the law...[and not] conve- nience es. constitutional rights.: The Administration will appoint this committee if the resolution passes; however, Chancellor Smith needs to approve it first. The members appointed will need to • make a comm itment, and have an interest in this matter. Then the senate needs to approve the candi- date. Second on the agenda was the Student Survey Committee. This survey, comprised of soo students, is about what the students would prefer in an "Ideal Schedule." It also asked questions such as: when would you like your classes to be offered? days, times, am/pm, length, weekends, etc.? child care? elderly care? The 5100 students represented the more than 5,000 students we have on campus. Teri Jacobson serves on that committee, and the chairperson is Diana Sharp. April 10. 1997. page~ Sustainable Racine project puts students KRIS ZIESEMER GUEST WRJTER Communications students at the University of Wisconsin- Parkside are participating in an innovative community visionary project involving the residents of Racine. That project is called Sustainable Racine. The students are from the Public Relations and Society course taught by Judy Logsdon, professor of communication. The project is funded by Samuel Johnson, chairman of S.c. Johnson. UW- Parks ide has an active role in providing the project with staffing needs until an executive director and permanent staff are hired. The students are working with William Matelski of Matelski and Associates, Inc., the lead staff person for the pro- ject. The community-wide effort will focus on meeting the current needs of all citizens without compromising the ability of future generations in meeting their own needs. Citizen input in developing ideas that will strengthen and unify the community and deter- mine a common vision for the future is a major component of the Sustainable Community effort. The students have become actively involved in marketing the concepts and ideas behind the Sustainable Racine effort to the UW-Parkside community. Students, faculty and staff make up a significant portion of Racine's population. Involvement and input of ideas can enhance the area of Racine in creating and sustaining a healthier, safer and better envi- ronment in all standards of liv- ing. Approximately 17-20 students were on hand to attend each meeting, and discussed objec- tives set up by radio station per- sonnel in order to help get the Radio Club off to a functional start. The radio station has currently set up three goals in order to accomplish this. The first and most difficult is to obtain radio frequency through the approval of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) The second goal is to acquire efficient funds to help buy equipment and publi- cize the radio station's revival. The third goal is to fill the now vacant radio room with equip- ment desperately needed in order for the station to operate effi- ciently. Dianna Duwe, president of the Radio Club, is currently in the process of writing up contracts and outlines of the radio station's needs in order to present them to the surrounding community for support, donations and recogni- tion. The radio station hopes to obtain funding from area busi- nesses in exchange for on-air publicity. The radio station also hopes to receive donations from other organizations on campus. , "The purpose of trying to re- establish this organization is to inform, entertain and become a morale booster, not only for the students and staff at UW- Parkside, but also for the Racine and Kenosha communities," explained Radio Club member Nicole Sicuro. Radio station personnel feel that having a radio station on campus could help the other organiza- tions under the S.O.C. (Students Organizations Council) umbrella advertise their events across cam- pus. "Presently, UW-Parkside's enrollment is down, and advertis- ing on the air would be a great way to get the word out and inter- est people in obtaining informa- tion about the facilities UW- Parkside has to .offer,' explained Radio Club member Michelle Hansen. Mike Graczyk, another student involved with the Radio Club, commented: "There are a lot of strikes against us right now, but we are working hard to change people's views about starting up the radio station again." The Radio Club is currently looking for support and help with fundraising from interested stu- dents and faculty members.
