Second annual Bilingual Open House deemed successful Alyssa Kay kay00003 @ uwp ,edu On Saturday, 21 January, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside lts 001s f°r ^ts second ever Bilingual Open House. While ar si e s Office of Admissions and New Student Services as a ways dedicated itself to providing student services, such as open ouses, this bilingual event was unique, as it marketed itself towar s Hispanic students and was conducted entirely in Spanish. e event generated a great turnout from both families and high sc ool groups. Badger High School, located in Lake Geneva, bussed in their potential students who wanted to get a slice of college. As the event commenced, Admissions Advisor and Bilingual Open House coordinator Mirella Rivera gave her admissions presentation, where she discussed admissions requirements, high school transcripts, projected costs, athletics, student involvement, and major and minor programs. "We hope to make people well aware of what Parkside has to offer them, the steps to apply to get here and how to achieve success at Parkside," said Rivera. Rivera handed the microphone off to special guest Leonor McCall-Rodriguez, who gave a motivational presentation about opportunity and the importance of education. "I think it is always important for students to remember what differentiates people who succeed from those who don't is that the ones who succeed are willing to do things that the others are not," said McCall- Rodriguez Many of the students and teachers enjoyed both Rivera and McCall- Rodriquez's presentations, and they learned a lot about the college experience. "I loved the motivational speaker," said Badger High School teacher Joe Reed. "It was also really nice to see that your guidance representative was a bilingual graduate of this university, and that she showed her success to the students." "I am getting excited!" said a student attendee from Badger High School. "Today, I found out that Parkside has the Pre-dentistry program that I want to study," "1 understood what [Leonor] was saying and where she was coming from. I think it was a great presentation and it had a good message," said another Badger High School junior. After McCall-Rodriguez gave her presentation, the students were divided into groups, with whom they attended workshops on college preparation and financial aid. The students then regrouped for a catered PricewaterhouseCoopers, John Hawksworth, predicted that China would economically be "way ahead of the US by 2030" with an average economic growth consecutively being over 8% during these recession years, peaking at 10.2% in 2010. With this expanding economy, the United States is thinking ahead to international business agreements and foreign investments. The Business and Technology Department at University of Wisconsin Parkside cannot help but notice this economic opportunity that could arise from international student education opportunities. "Business is not just local, it's not just national, it's global and the education we're providing our students also needs to be global," Dean Fred Ebeid recently noted at a SBT meeting. "Our eyes have been opened to the world and we have moved to significantly increase foreign enrollment." Efforts for foreign education incentives have been spearheaded by the Global Education Board. Its director, Jamie Wang and the university's chancellor, Debbie Ford, have made multiple trips to China and plan on finalizing negotiations for partnership programs for Parkside's students this fall. With such incentives becoming offered in the near future, it is exciting to see that Parkside is now offering a 3-credit (2-credit for MBA students) China study tour in the summer of 2012 from May 15 to May 31 as a stepping stone to future study partnerships. Students on this summer tour will visit three cities (Beijing, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong), visit cultural and tourist attractions (such as the Great Wall and the Forbidden City), become immersed in the Chinese language and culture, as well as attend lectures on Chinese trade and commerce with its government. One of the tours was entirely in Spanish, and the other was in English. The program was an effort from Rivera and Assistant Director of Admissions Cassie Vosters. Both Vosters and Rivera stressed the importance of achieving educational and career goals, and their aim was to promote Parkside's diverse campus as a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for students from all walks of life. Saint Joseph's leads the all-time series against UW-Parkside, 21-11. The last two meetings between the teams came down to the final possessions, with UWParkside pulling ahead in glorious victory. However, it was yet another defeat for the men's basketball team at DeSimone Gymnasium. UW-Parkside went on to drop the home match-up, 85-94. UW-Parkside began the game sloppily. The team started off wth a couple of low percentage shots and communication errors. In the early portions of the contest both teams traded inside the key in a rough and tough elbow match to determine who has the most testosterone. Ten minutes into the game, Saint Joseph lead by a score of 21-17. Neither team looked to have a clear advantage. At the nine-minute mark, UW-Parkside's men's basketball head coach Luke Reigel determined they only want to send three to the boards. In a close game, junior forward Conrad Krutwig nailed a beautiful turn-around jumper tying the game at 27 with seven minutes remaining in the first half. In a close grudge match, between the bottom two teams in the GLVC East Conference, the score rested at 37-37 by the end of the first half. The points in the paint were a huge factor in the first half, capitalized by Saint Joseph's 18 points. Second chance points were equal for both teams at eight a piece. Starting off the second half, both high-powered offenses really start to show. Junior forwards Jeremy Saffold and Konrad Krutwig capitalized by hitting consecutive three-pointers, which gave UW-Parkside a then comfortable seven-point cushion. In desperate hopes of forcing UWParkside into making mistakes, Saint Joseph's started applying full-court pressure. The defensive pressure helped Saint Joseph's pull back within three, and forced a UW-Parkside timeout. Just when UW-Parkside looked its most vulnerable, sophomore guard Colt Grandstaff knocked down a baseline three-pointer to keep UW-Parkside ahead. With eleven minutes remaining in the game, the fast breaks really started to take affect. The change in tempo pushed Saint Joseph's to its first lead of the game, by a score of 60 to 58. Saint Joseph's continued to rally, forcing UW1" Parkside to take yet another timeout. As the game progressed, UW-Parkside's defense was in shambles. The lead for Saint Joseph's leapt to a commanding thirteen-point lead with 2:30 remaining. Both teams entered with a GLVC record of 6-3, and was an intense bout that saw UW-Parkside come out on top, 75-71. I caught up with Senior Guard Amy Selk and asked her what her thoughts were on tonight's game against St. Joseph. "Saint Joseph's is one of the hottest teams in the conference," said UW-Parkside senior guard Amy Selk. "They have very athletic guards and containing their penetration is a key to get the victory tonight. Every GLVC game is a battle. I definitely view Saint Joseph's as a top contender in the conference. We just have to stay focused and play Ranger basketball." Whenever these two programs link up it proves to be a tightly fought match up. Coming into this game, UW-Parkside lead the series between the two colleges, 21-20. Their last meeting, on February, 19 2011, UW-Parkside won on the road 67-51. After the first half, Saint Joseph's led 40-35. The field goal percentage for UW-Parkside and Saint Joseph's were both below 50%: UW-Parkside 48.3% and Saint Joseph's 46.9 %. The leading scorer at halftime for UW-Parkside was junior guard Jenna Endisch. For the St. Joseph Puma's their leading scorer was senior guard Montrell Mills. UW-Parkside came out strong in the second half. With 6:06 left in the second half, UW-Parkside trailed 58-65. With 0:28 left in the game, UW-Parkside led the game 73-69. The final score for the game was 75-71. "We made some big plays when we needed it," said UW-Parkside women's head coach Jenny Kenesie. The leading scorer for UW-Parkside was senior forward Brittany Beyer with 21 points and six rebounds. This year's senior class is now four wins away from becoming the most winning group in school history. As a journalist living in Memphis, Tennessee, Wells became committed to ending segregation, lynch mobs, and the destruction of African-American property in the South. ~ry-—rrrr BOH: second annual Bilingual Open House Currently, UW-Parkside is the most diverse institution in the University of Wisconsin system. While events like the bilingual open house promote diversity, expanding Parkside's ethnic range was not the sole intention of the event. Of the roughly 3,700 full time students, approximately 415 identify themselves as Hispanic. While not all of the students who identify themselves as Hispanic consider Spanish their first language, the Bilingual Open House accommodated Hispanic families and students and attempted to expand the general Hispanic community at Parkside. The Bilingual Open House provided students who speak Spanish in their homes with a level of comfortability in a setting that is less than familiar, as it was some of the students' first times visit a college campus. "It is not about promoting that we have Spanish speaking students. It is promoting the idea that we have a family and a network that will support you at UW-Parkside," said Vosters. In addition to comfortability, the aim of the presentations was to help Hispanic high school students set goals and plan adequately depending upon where they were in their high school career. "I think it all goes back to the idea that college is attainable," said Vosters. "When you have a motivational speaker, who talks about the bigger picture of the goals, then the supporting sessions really identify that it is attainable at UW-Parkside," As the second Bilingual Open House was a success, Admissions counselors hope that the students walked away with an enhanced value for education, and a clear ambition to pursue a degree. "Education is possible," said Rivera. "It starts at a young age. It starts with preparation. It starts with setting yourself up with some goals, and setting yourself up to achieve them." . . . Global: The School of Business and Technology looks towards the future The cost of the study tour is $2,995 which includes international and domestic airfare, hotels, ground transportation, tickets to all cultural sites, and most meals. Financial aid is available for those who qualify with a $1,500 study tour grant which will reduce cost to $1,495. Everybody has different housing preferences and recently with the status of our economy, the declining population of dorm dwellers at University of Wisconsin-Parkside is no surprise. Every semester, many students have to ask themselves if saving money by living off campus is worth sacrificing the experience of dorm life. There is certainly an experience to have, but it comes with a price tag. Why else would so many movies reference the college dorm room environment? It exists and it's real. There is something magical about staying up at 4 a.m. with a group of strangers and watching them turn into your best friends. However, what you have to consider is that another significant purpose of on-campus living exists that isn't catered to by media. Are you there for the suggested experience or are you going there to complete your education? While the close proximity that the dorms have to classrooms is most appealing to an aspiring scholar, some feel that the distractions they promote to students outweigh the location aspect. I think dorms are more distracting to my education than they are beneficial because of all the activities. There's so much to do so it's easy to push aside your studies," says freshman Leah Bauer. However, some feel that managing to live on your own (or at least in a place where you have your own space) is better than the toll on your sleep, study, and sanity that can present itself with life at home. "Living on campus is better because I only have to deal with my own problems and not family problems. I'm just responsible for myself and no one else," explains freshman Brittany Pawlicki. Not all on-campus students have the ease of mere self-responsibility. Resident Advisors are constantly on watch, assuring that the policies of the dormitory are enforced. They have sacrificed weeks of their holiday breaks building leadership skills to prepare for the interactions they will have with the residents and amongst the RAs themselves. In return, UWParkside offers Resident Advisors a free room in their designated section of authority and a free meal plan. "The responsibility I have as an RA isn't just worth a free room, it's worth more. I've met different people. My job has opened doors and opportunities for me I'd never have otherwise had. It's not easy though because sometimes we're up late when we have tests in the morning - it's exhausting," explains junior Erin Ryan. For the rest of the residents that are paying the full cost of living on campus, the question of whether or not the price is worth the ten minute walks from our beds to class is worth it. While Ranger Hall has a lot to offer, it's also lacking in some aspects that other UW campuses are not. "No, I don't think what we pay is worth staying here. In the dorms at UW-Whitewater and UW-Milwaukee, everyone who enters the dorms is carded, RA's make you register guests, and you are limited to three. Anyone can get into UW-Parkside's dorms by knocking. I don't like how some random guy could be in the hall while I'm heading to the bathroom," states junior Jasmine Anderson. There are surely positives of the dorm life experience, including the social life. Unlike commuters, dorm residents get frequent interaction with their peers all hours of the day. Just roommates and that's it, and that's how it's supposed to be." "Well first of all, I [have] weird habits and she did too. We didn't agree, there was no middle ground between us because she wanted it her way and I wanted it my way. It was always awkward tension," says Janiyah Burney. Since you ve lived at home already, I'd encourage you to experience the residence hall lifestyle at UW-R See how you like it. If you do, it may result in a much more convenient education, and while you're there you may just find your roommate who was meant to be lifelong best friends with you. If you don't enjoy it, then you can always move back home or move into an apartment off campus with your friends. You never know how terrible or awesome it's going be until you try it. It's one of those college experiences worth trying for both the positives and negatives. This Saturday festivities run high at UW-Parkside as the Rita Center for Arts and Humanities opens officially to students, staff, and community visitors. The University will host a Gala event in the Rita Center featuring presentations and performances from the Theatre Arts Department, Music department, and Art Department. The Theatre Arts department has organized several events including a short fight demonstration, student design presentations, American College Theatre Festival Scene performances, and finally an exclusive preview of the upcoming Drama Club production entitled A Piece of Mind. About the University House, she said, 'It's about 500 times better than the dorms." Living with other leaders on campus has been a boost to the girls' own personal goals. One goal Kelly Conwayhad was "to be able to talk about problems I have with leadership skills." Informal living conditions gave her many opportunities to do so. Students who apply to the House must be of sopho- more, junior, or senior stand- ing and have a 2.25 cumula- tive G.P.A., have demon- strated leadership qualities through extracurricular involvement. Preference is given to out-of-area students and those who are not stu- dent teaching, in the mili- tary, or involved with intern- ships. Applications will be due in Housing the week of March 25 after Spring Break. Selected students will go through an interview process with residence life and student affairs staff. While in the house, resi- dents are required to serve a minimum 15-20 hours of extracurricular activities a month, such as student orga- nizations, academic clubs and community service. Or they can enroll in the Leadership 2000 course offered at Parkside. Before Eleanor Smith became Chancellor in 1994 the Chancellors of Parkside were required to live in the home as a condition of their employment. Smith was given the option ofliving there or receiving a $1,238 monthly housing subsidy to live elsewhere. Smith isn't the first to refuse the house. In 1972, then-assistant Parkside assistant chancel- lor Clarence A. Brockman wrote to a UW official in Madison that "The house is an architectural mish-mash which none of us in our wildest imagination could have designed" and is "too small for any function involving more than 10 peo- ple." The former chancellor's residence at 411612th Street in Somers, now University Leadership House In 1966 founding Parkside Chancellor Irving G. Wyllie also expressed dissatisfac- tion with the house's loca- tion and preferred homes south of the center ofthe city of Kenosha along the lake shore. Those homes "can only go downhill on a long-term basis." Being a chancellor you have certain expectations, said Steven Wallner, Assistant Director of Residence Life. "We were just thinking of alternative housing," explained Wallner due to an increased student interest in housing. Since new dorms will be built in Fall 1997 "we don't really anticipate needing it." The good athletes could still have their tuition wavered, but would have to pay their own fees. "When you pay tuition you really pay a third of the cost of your instruction, the state is paying two- thirds ... so if you're an athlete we wouldn't get your third, but we still get the two-thirds. For segregated fees we don't get any, which means our costs are still the same," however, the other students pay the student athlete's portion of the fees, according to Welsh. If the segregated fees policy is changed the committee did agree that they wouldn't change the rules for students who had already been recruited under the current policy. "If we charge athletes student fees ...it could decrease your student fees by about twenty dollars a year, or, without an increase, it could add about $60,000 into that pool," Welsh said. An architect for the new resident halls will be pursued immediately. Streeter wanted to assign an architect for this project last fall, but The Department of Administration (DOA) wanted to wait and find out what the Building Commission's decision was first. When the design phase is finished, the project will be reviewed and given final authorization. Even though the dorm expansion 'is targeted for completion by 'he FalJ of 1997, Senator Kohl donates gift for UW- Madison arena Senator Herb Kohl gave $25 million to the construction of UW-Madison's new basketball sports arena. The donation is the largest gift ever received by the UW System. Kohl's gift, according to UW officials, is vital to the building of the new arena, which will cost $72 million to complete. $27 million dollars was approved for the arena earlier in the week by the building commission. The remaining $20 million will need to be raised. The arena will be used mainly for basketball, but will also accommodate other sports events such as ice hockey. Kohl mentioned that he hoped the arena would assist the basketball program, especially in recruiting. Kohl, who attended Uw-Madtson in the 1950's is the owner of the Milwaukee Bucks basketball team, and is among the wealthiest of the US senators. Objections will not be accepted then, but a chance to do so will be allowed at open meetings to discuss the budget. and "it's not in our hands [yet}," as he said, he still feels that positive answers are in store for the future of Parkside. The Phy Ed. expansion's proposal got half of what it wanted - providing nearly half of the original $9.1 million proposal, The project will require $3.8 million in general state- funded borrowing and $670,000 from non-Slate sources. The $4.465 million project does not include a new field house, wrestling combau ves , and more storage space, but it does offer renovations and some new constructions. Among these renovations will be completely remodeled locker rooms that will be bigger and better - accommodated for the new field house when it is eventually built. A co-ed training room will be outside of the men's and women's locker rooms and a whirlpool. A full-size weight room, a dance studio/aerobic fitness room, and three new classrooms will be built as part of some of the new constructions, as well as a new mechanical room for monitoring heating and air conditioning units. This first phase of an overall project will be built to accommodate a hopeful Phase II construction of a field house in the future. Because "phase one doesn't sol ve all the instructional needs or the high demand for open space that a field house can provide," a press release quoted Linda Draft, Director of Athletics, saying, she does "plan to pursue funding for the field house vigorously in the next biennium." Plans are in motion. When asked if the construction for each project would be done all together or in stages, Streeter said that "we hope to have it done in cinch . We're going to shoot for the Fall of 1997," said Streeter, admitting that it is an ambitious deadline. "We're going to work hard." With an additional 400 students on campus, there will be a need for more lockers and space in the Phy Ed. building and a need for bigger and better accommodations of food service. "It's very exciting for the University," said Streeter, then informed me that in Parkside's 26 years, there has not been construction of this, or any magnitude, in twenty years - after the Union building was completed. Volunteer of the Week Students are selected as Volunteers of the Week because of their altruistic attitudes, the amount of time shared within the community and the positive impact their service has made in the lives of others. This week's volunteer is Julie Tishken. Julie Tishken is a senior majoring in Sociology with plans of being an elementary school teacher. She enrolled in the Parkside Volunteer Program in November 1994, when she began volunteering at Raymond School in the first grade classroom and at Racine Community Care Center helping in the activities department. Julie is also a member of the UW- Parkside Whale team that visits area schools. Most recently, she was a group aide at the Very Special Arts Festival that was held on campus during spring break. Dee Dee D' Amato, Activities Specialist, at the Racine Community Care Center thinks Julie is a wonderful volunteer. She reported, "Julie is a real good gall She seems interested in the residents and will often initiate things to do. Everyone likes her!" "The nursing home Julie Tishken experience has filled a void in my life, as 1 am not closely involved with my own grandparents." said Julie. "I enjoy learning about the residents and seeing their smiles." Julie has been able to compare the rural and urban schools as well as work closely with special education children. It seems like a fairly innocent phrase. In fact, those words probably sound downright musical to homeowners. The idea all by itself is a fairly simple one: lower property taxes in order to take a hefty financial burden offWisconsin citizens. Noproblem, right? Sure, if youdon't mind about a billion dollars in statewide budget cuts. Ah, yes ... "budget cuts." Now there's a phrase that invokes outrage, anger and terror amongst the masses. Cutting money out of any budget means tightening purse strings, cutting unnecessary costs, and more often than not, losing quality. When Governor Thompson implemented a plan to shift puhlic school financing from the shoulders of the taxpayers to those of the State, he created an interesting situation statewide. On one hand, property taxes could certainly use a reduction. On the other hand, these reductions would not go in without consequences elsewhere in the system. In fact, all state agencies were asked to propose a 0% budget increase for this year, and a 5 and 10% hudget decrease for the next biennium. Ouch. At UW-Parkside, a 5% budget decrease would mean losing about $900,000. Which means that a 10% decrease amounts to $1.8 million. As a student, one might ask the question, "How can I expect no loss in quality of education at an institution that suddenly is cutting 1.8 million bucks out of its budget?" Trying to answer that question has had many people here and statewide concerned. Chancellor Eleanor Smith called a meeting about the budget cuts in order to come up with a plan of attack. A three-step approach was decided upon. First, let the UW System know how the 5 and 10 % cuts would affect the number of positions and enrollment numbers here at the university. Then create a process to make the necessary cuts, and thirdly, "enumerate the impact of such cuts on our students and other clients." The first steps were decided upon, and deadlines were set. Everything was ready for the dreaded cuts to be made. Maybe it's because it's an election year - most UW students are of voting age. Maybe Governor Thompson decided that hurting the UW System went against the whole idea of affordable, accessible higher education which the state has so adamantly supported. Mayhe someone in the UW system squawked loud enough for somebody to - pay attention. Who knows? But, despite the previous command to cut the budget, Governor Thompson issued a new statement exempting the UW System from the impending decrease in spending. The:='Ki;;;:;; Governor thought that it wouldn't be prudent to force such obviously devastating cuts on the public universities. So, we're off the hook? With the issuance of this statement, the UW system has been granted pardon Recruitment Fair OnWednesday, September 21, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside clubs and student organizations actively promoted themselves in an effort to increase awareness and membership. TheRecruitment Fair was held in Upper Main Place between 9 am and 3 pm. Each spring and fall the Student Organizations Council (SOC) sponsors the fair. According to Karla Zahn of the Student Life Office, the number of clubs and organizations at Parkside has increased about fifty percent in the last ten years. Participating groups set up booths where representatives' answered questions and Lisa Bigalke, Art Club Secretary. "A lot of people, even non-art majors, are stopping by to see what we're doing." distributed brochures, flyers, or other informational material. Groups used displays, had drawings for prizes, or gave away free items to draw attention to their booths. A panel including Chancellor Eleanor Smith, Student Life officials, and Ann Bausman of the Computer Science Depart- ment awarded cash prizes to the groups with the most interesting displays: Engineering Club (Lst), Art Club (2nd), and Alpha Psi Omega (3rd, Drama Club). The prizes were $45 for first place, $30 for second, and $15 for third. The money is deposited in the club's private account, to be spent with the club's discretion. Engineering Club displayed their mini-Baja car, built by some of the engineering students. The car resembles a dune buggy and is raced in an annual competition among midwestern colleges. ,----------,----------------,--, Parkside's mini-Baja placed Bike Tl-res Slashed in the top third of last year's entries, according to professor of engineering, Walter Feldt. Art Club displayed a large painting and welcomed '0 anyone, artist or not, to "improve" it. Many st~de~ts contributed to the painting throughout the day. "The painting is a colorful ~ay to get people involved, said Harris, Parkside's Technical Theatre Manager. APO also gave away free tickets for their first play of the semester, The Tavern, to the student who came closest to guessing the number of "hardware" pieces in ajar at their booth. There were 281 pieces, and Political science major Kandi Santivaci guessed 265. Many groups reported that they recruited new members at the Fair. Anyone still interested in joining a club or organization can go to the University Activities Office in Union 209 or the SOC Office in Union 203. Alpha Psi Omega (APO) displayed a model set of the film, Guys and Dolls, as well as models of other famous film settings. If you have any information regarding this act of vandalism, or any other crime, please contact the University Police at 595-2455. 2 Lukas Foss Headlines Concert Gala At UW-Parkside October 2 international artists to campus for concerts, master classes, workshops and lectures. UW-Parkside and representatives of the Centre have been disCussing a mutually beneficial association. Until now, the project has been discussed in general terms. No formal plans outlining the relationship with the centre have been concluded. Leningrad Symphony, the Tokyo Philharmonic and all of the major American orchestras. The concept of a year- round, self supporting arts program along with a resident, professional chamber orchestra was presented in May to University of Wisconsin- Parkside administrators by Carolyn Cerrones, general director of the Lukas Foss Culture Centre. Cerrones, of Milwaukee, believes the center would attract top performing works of Franz Joseph Haydn and Johannes Brahms, as well as two of his own compositions. Swedish will join Szepessy in a performance of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano and Cello Sonata. Foss, former music director of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, has been a guest conductor throughout the United States, South America and Europe, including engagements with the London Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic, Lukas Foss, internationally acclaimed composer, conductor and pianist, will be the featured artist with the Foss Centre Piano Trio during a 3 pm gala concert at the University of Wisconsin- Parkside, Sunday, October 2. The concert will be held in the Communication Arts Theatre, located at the south end of the main campus complex. Admission is $15 for for the general public and . $8 for students. With the job market of the future becoming more and more cut-throat, especially for people without a college degree, accessible education is not only a nice thing to have, it's nearly a necessity for maintaining our standard ofliving. With any luck, we'll be able to keep quality universities running and close to home. So, stay tuned, because next week the budget-cut saga will continue with interviews from Donald Kummings, chair of the English Department, William Streeter, Assistant Chancellor of Administration and Fiscal Affairs, and (with any luck) Eleanor Smith, Chancellor. The close examination of how things get done may actually create a more efficient, cost- effective way of doing things. "Often times, people tend to get comfortable in traditional ways of doing things," commented Chief of Police, Robert Deane. "They're done that way because they've always been done that way." It couldn't hurt to be open to new, better methods of operating. It could hurt, however, to lose the quality and affordability that the State of Wisconsin currently offers students. The cost of private higher education has risen to outrageous heights in the past decade, and state schools offer a quality alternative. Or at least they have thus far. It would be a shame to see public universities lose competitiveness with private schools, or worse, to see from its sentence of financial doom, right? Not so fast.. .. Included in the statement was an implication that other targets of budget reduction may be forthcoming. Basically, no one knows where the UW System will end up in this whole budget saga. It's probably wise to assume that some kind of belt-tightening will be required of the OW System. After all, state universities are a rather large consumer of budgeted state dollars. Perhaps more than any other state program. But how much will we have to cut back? And from where? These are certainly interesting questions. Too bad nobody's answered them yet.
