"I am very confident in retiring because I know the situation of the campus, how well positioned it is to achieve the next step. Whoever comes here will come and basically take the leadership reins and I know that you will support them [sic] just like you supported me," he added. This committee will be composed of faculty, staff, students and community members nominated by Keating and other governance heads in the UW-System. The search- and-screen committee will then produce five possible candidates to he judged by a committee composed of UW- System regents. Before the end of the semester, there will also be an open forum on campus with these final five candidates. Reilly suggested that it should be easy to find candidates for the position because of the "attractiveness of this campus and the attractiveness of this area of the state." "Our challenge is to identify the new campus CEO with the right skills, experience and drive to keep alive the positive momentum established here during Jack's tenure" said Falbo, who will be chairing the selection committee composed of regents. He added that "as a proud and active UW-Parkside alumnus, I know Chancellor Keating's absence will be felt throughout these halls, these halls that have been made stronger by his presence," Reilly spoke of Keating's efforts to solidify the relationship between the university and the UW-Parkside communities through civic engagement and service projects. "His guidance and leadership have given the university a substantial foundation for future progress. That foundation will be especially important as we begin to think about the next chapter of UW- Parkside's history of stellar service," said Reilly. Overseeing the school's first Master Plan, Keating helped implement over $100 million worth of construction development. Keating is also responsible for bringing the civic service project "Campus Compact" to the UW-System, as well as many other programs to support service and community involvement. In fact, the Carnegie Foundation named UW- Parkside one out of 64 nationally recognized "engaged campuses," and the university is the only Wisconsin school to achieve this designation. UW-Parkside has also been used as a model of excellent community engagement for Division n universities. "Over the past decade, Chancellor Keating has ambitiously set out to position UW-Parkside as an engine of economic development in the state of Wisconsin broadly and in this region especially," said Reilly. He added that "if we are going to be successful as a state in the future ... we have to use our college campuses to attract and hold tatent to help grow the kinds of jobs in the future that our graduates will take and that will attract graduates from other institutions." Reilly also mentioned UW- Parkside's growing academic reputation, including the addition of seven new academic majors during Keating's tenure. The applied health sciences major, which is currently in its first year, has already caught the interest of approximately 40 students at the university. Keating recalled last spring, when the Board of Regents visited UW-Parkside, and the campus presented them with "the three 'E's: excellence in education for everyone." He said, "This campus really sparkled and it didn't sparkle because we're building new buildings - because we were, they saw it. It sparkled because what our faculty and staff have done for our students and how our students were so well-educated, so terrific in their presentations." As the most diverse campus in the UW-system, both in faculty and students, UW-Parkside presents an attainable education to the student body, approximately 67% of whom are the first in their family to attend college. "Everyone is accepted here at UW-Parkside if they are willing to work and work hard to get their degree," said Keating. He added that. ;,'We're not elitist. We're basically grass-roots." In the next eight months, Keating promises to increase scholarship funds to support the educational goals of the university's neediest students. During his time at UW- Parkside, Keating has supported the Equity Scorecard Project, which works to break down the barriers to educational success that still exist in an ever- growing diverse population of undergraduates. To promote academic achievement, Keating also introduced the First Year Experience program with the goal of increasing student retention and graduation rates. The Ranger News - past Wednesday, I announced my decision to step down and the staff voted Jo Kirst into the position. I am sure that she will do a great job leading the newspaper and I have every confidence that the organization will continue to grow and develop. For myself, however, I will be functioning at a much less active role with The Ranger News. I will be returning to reporting, where I first started more than two years ago, to write about the issues that matter most to our university. Because I can no longer dedicate the time and energy needed to be the editor in chief, I feel that It is with some sadness that I have recently stepped down from my position as editor in chief of The Ranger News. This to step down as Editor in Chief, and I was elected as the next leader. I'd like to thank both the staff and Kaitlyn for their confidence in me, and the support and help I've recei ved already. Getting this issue together was a bit of a challenge, but due to the great teamwork we have at The Ranger News, everything worked itself out. It is amazing how much can change over the course of one semester, and even over the one- month winter break. Recently, I have decided to pursue graduate school as an alternative to entering the work force immediately after my graduation from UW- Parkside this May. I also found a new job at Barks-N-Bubbles in Kenosha, which is (somewhat surprisingly) one of the most fun jobs I have ever had. The only bad thing is cleaning up ferret poop, which stinks really bad. I will also be spending a lot of my them in the best way possible. If we take what we have learned at the conference and combine it with the support and good communication we already have, The Ranger News should be able to improve the quality of its work signifioantly. I have a few goals for The Ranger News this semester. For the staff, I'd like to expand everyone's knowledge of the paper's mechanics, along with keeping our meetings semi- democratic. I know that as Editor- in-Chief I have the final say in what does or does not happen, but I also know that people like to voice their concerns, opinions, and suggestions. I want to hear those opinions because I value them and the people they come from. As far as the paper itself goes, I would like to start some new things and restart some past ideas -like an occasional "lit" section. On a different note entirely, I'll tell you a litlie bit about me. Currently, I am a sophomore majoring in Criminal Justice.
