Did you turn out?
BY PRESTON BROWN
With voter registration on the
rise, die 2004 presidential race was
one of the closest in history. Although
many were registered, polls are
showing that Democratic voter turn
out was far less than expected while
Republican voters came to win.
A poll primarily taken on
November 2 on the UW- Parkside
campus revealed a student body
that is highly Democratic, with 61
percent of polled students pushing for
a Kerry win. This poll, although not
scientific, was randomly distributed
throughout campus at different times
and in different places to 171 students
who were more than willing to show
support for their candidate. Most
were excited to participate given
all the hype around this election,
Poll of UW-Parkside students
which shows that younger voters are
becoming more interested in politics.
The Democrats narrowly won
Wisconsin, which is surprising
considering the network of liberal
college campuses that reside in the
state. The poll taken by The Ranger
News showed only 30 percent of UWParkside
students supported reelection
for the president, yet his apparent
margin of victory for the popular vote
was slim. Likewise, Russ Feingold
was barely able to retain his seat in
the senate, which came as a surprise to
some who projected a clean sweep.
National Public Radio reported
on November 3 that although the
general population is democrats,
they don't seem to get to the voting
polls. It seems that some of the new
young voters that were registered,
did not follow
through.
The republicans
successfully got
the majority of
their registered
voters to show
up on November
2, not surprising
considering the
history of the
GOP turn out
during the last 20
years.
Kerry Other/Undecided Ralph
Nader was only
able to acquire
four percent
of the support
from students
here, which is
far less than was
expected. It
seems students
were more
interested in a
two-party system
this time around.
Many Democrats
worried about
Nader's involvement in this election,
calling him a "spoiler" and blaming
him for his so called contributions
toward Bush's 2000 victory.
An additional four percent went
to the category marked "other" which
out of those seven votes, two went
to David Cobb, the Green Party's
candidate. Apparently, the campus
built next to a massive park system
wasn't particularly worried about
environmental issues.
It seems that all the hype around
voters ages 18-24 was nothing
more than that: hype. In fact the
projections aren't showing significant
rise in young voter turn out at all. To
many this may come as a surprise,
but apparently not to either of the
candidates, because neither of them
publicly pushed for issues that
would affect a younger crowd, such
as lowering tuition. Even with the
Holly wood celebrity craze over John
Kerry, young voters still needed
something more concrete to vote for.
Traditionally, candidates push for
issues that affect retired persons as
well as middle class citizens. These
two categories make up the majority
of voters in this country and are justly
given the most attention.
Although UW-Parkside's apparent
choice was not elected this time
around, all should keep voting. It's
not about winning or losing; it's about
exercising your right to choose. If
young people continue to vote, then
future candidates will be forced to
address issues more relevant to them.

Letters to the Editor
Dear Ranger News,
I appreciate that you want to bring a sense of fun to
a formally boring paper but your photoshop work on
Vice President Cheney went too far. How can you caii
yourselves a journalistic outlet and then alter his face to
look like some kind erf demon?
As a student leader on campus and planner of many
events I can fell you that requests such as Cheney made
are commonplace and there are even crazier requests
that have been made. You should issue an apology to
the Vice President and also to all the students on campus
with deep respect to our nations leaders. It's not the
words written about Cheney that pissed me off but the
way his picture was grossly a^eredL
Sincerely,
Donna Minkley

To the Editor
The photo caption on the Family Fiesta Weekend
article (October 23 Issue, page 25} says" A very tail
man," referrtngfo a guy on stilts. Don't yo u think you
could have had more journalistic Integrity and put
the "tali man's" name, and explain that he was on
stilts? it just wasn't very professional.
- Anonymous
You may be right, professionalism is what we strive
fa, but students are who we are, so experiments and
creativity are to be expected. What i'm surprised erf
is that you pick out the "tail mm" thing, but more
importmtly there is a grammatical error in the
sentence (ft has ihe word "during" twice, once in
the wrong place). If there were "journalism Integrity"
classes here at UW-Parkside, I'm sure we'd all be a
little more savvy on that tip.

Harassment on campus?
The dictionary defines harassment as tormenting by continued
persistent and criticism. As a student at UW-Parkside there is no
reason to ever have to worry about that. Students have a lot of
options at hand when it comes to dealing with harassment on campus.
Students can go to the UW-Parkside Police at Tallent Hall, the Dean
of Students office in Wyllie Hall, or organizations on campus that
deal with harassment issues, such as the Women's Center, Peer Health
Center, Student Health and Counseling Center, and OMSA can all
help students who feel harassed. For students who feel tormented by
persistent individuals, they have all these programs at UW-Parkside to
help them through there problems.
Adios Senior!

degree requirements will be met, and at Senior Send-off Days. There
will also be food, beverages, and free gifts served there!
Art on Campus
Students have the opportunity to view works by Peter V.
Biancbi titled "The Art of Science."The exhibition explores the artist's
work and its role in illuminating history, anthropology, archeology, and
science for millions of Americans. A Kenosha native, Peter Bianchi
was a fine artist and illustrator employed by National Geographic
magazine from 1959 to 1974. This event is collaboration between
Kenosha Public Museum, and UW-Parkside. It will be going on for
eight-weeks. It will start in November and end in December. Students
can view the work in the Communication Arts Gallery, which is
located by the theater in Comm. Arts building
Letter From Missing Professor
Dear Tal and Molly:
Thank you very much for your article appeared on Ranger's News
(October 23, 2004). I really appreciate your efforts to let students know what
is going on here on campus. I would like to provide some additional facts.
1. As you and other students observed, I went to the class on October 11,
2004 and explained to the students why I refused to accept the unfair
assignment to teach Introduction to Sociology as a Weekend College
course. The main points I made were:
1). Department of Sociology/Anthropology is only required to teach 3
courses for the Weekend College per year. We have already offered more
than 3 courses for the academic year. I will be teaching one of them.
Therefore, both the department and I already fulfilled our responsibilities.
There is no reason to ask me to teach another course in the Weekend
College format.
2). Introduction to Sociology is not even a Weekend College course at
all. In addition, it is a course can be taught by majority of the faculty
members in the department There is no reason to just assign me to teach
it.
3). Requiring me to teach Weekend College courses as a mandatoiy
responsibility without any compensation is an unfair practice.
A. Teaching Weekend College courses created and are still creating
difficult situations for me. For instance, it interfered with my
personal and family life during weekends. In addition, it extended
my teaching time. For instance, I started to teach on January 7,2003
in the spring of 2003 while others started their teaching on Januaiy
21, 2003. For instance, I ended my teaching on June 5, 2004 in the
spring of 2004 while others ended their teaching on May 15, 2004.
B. Weekend College hired someone at lecture level sometime ago.
That position's starting salary ($40,000) was 20 % higher than all
four lecturers hired in the same year, 19 % higher that all 15 lecturers
in the College of Arts and Sciences. It was even higher than some
senior lecturers on campus who have worked for a long time.
Apparently, difficulties for teaching Weekend College was taken into
consideration for that position. However, I was never compensated.
C. In 1997, the executive committee of the department, after I
pointed out the structural problems to assign one individual member
to teach Weekend College without compensation, decided that it is a
departmental responsibility. However, the past two chairs refused to
lienor the decision for seven years.
4). I repeatedly informed the department chair and relevant parties,
starting in May 2004, that I would not accept the assignment to teach
Introduction to Sociology as a Weekend College course. I requested the
department chair and relevant parties eight (8) times to assign someone
else to teach the class for the sake of students.
2. On October 18, 2004,1 went to the same class again and distributed
copies of my e-mails to the department chair and relevant parties so that
students can find out the facts by themselves.
3. Quite few students in the class have already talked or e-mailed me to
express their understandings about my decision to refuse the unfair
assignment. They also asked why the department chair did not find
someone else to teach the class even though she knew I was not going to
teach the class.
Again, thank you very much for your article. Please feel free to contact
me if you need any further information.

Student Debate Changes to Free Speech Forum
BY NICHOLAS MICHAEL RAVNIKAR
The Ranger News and J01.7 FM WIPZ, in an.
effort to boost the level of political discourse on
campus, scheduled a debate to be held from noon
to 1 p.m. on October 26. Editor-in-Chief of Ranger
News, Henry Gaskins had contacted leaders of the
Young Conservatives and Campus Democrats, who
support President George W. Bush and Senator John
Kerry, respectively. While a table was going to be set
up for third-party supporters, none could be found to
officially represent a position.
After having gi ven both organizations a copy of
the debate format, Gaskins received an email from
the Young Conservatives, which was received less
than 48 hours before the event. "It was last minute,"
Gaskins told The Ranger News staff members at the
weekly Monday meeting, one day prior to the debate.
"Basically, the e-mail was two sentences long. It said,
'So sorry we said we could do this. Sorry, we can't do
this.' There was no explanation."
A befuddled collection of editors and
reporters sat scratching their heads, holding their
own debate as to what should be done with die event.
It was unanimous that The Ranger
News didn't want to appear liberally
# biased. But they didn't want to cancel Business Students Share the event, so they agreed to change the
A student kikes the opportunity to express his
views during a free speech rally sponsored by The
Ranger News and 101.7 FM WIPZ on October 26.
Their Wisdom Experiences
format from that of a debate. However,
two of the 10 staff members present believed that the
debate should go on as scheduled.
"The conservatives committed to do this. If
they end up being under-represented, it's their fault,"
one editor commented. The Ranger News staff was
unconvinced that an empty table slated for Young
Conservatives wouldn't arouse student suspicion.
While political ideologies among the staff
members do vary quite a bit, a quorum was reached
and a decision made that changed the character of the
event from debate to open podium. Campus Democrats,
however, had the opportunity to put forward dem ocratic
incumbent Bob Witch Wisconsin senatorial candidate,
and UW-Parkside alumnus. Despite the overwhelming
cheers that went up over various Bush-bashing pulpitthumping
diatribes, Assistant Editor Preston Brown
cited various inconsistencies in the liberal argument,
also noting that, "Fm not a conservative. I just think
that it's really easy to bad-mouth somebody who's...
not present."
Gaskins kept urging audience members and
passing students to "exercise their first amendment
right. If you've got something to say, now's your
chance to do it." Mike Cyzak took the opportunity to
read an original poem, reading into the microphone,
"Popularity is boring. Complacent. Shake the pillar.
With your individuality," from his poem "Shake the
Pillar.**

Wondering what those huge, single phrase, eye-catching
posters titled "Business by Students" were? Or did you see
the arrows on the floor that trailed down the Molinaro hallway
towards Ranger Hall on October 26 and November 1? For those
that were not curious enough to find the source of these marketing
efforts here are your answers. Two business students, senior
Jeremy Scuffham and junior Ben Stark, hosted a total of four
informational presentations entitled "Business by Students."
The event was designed to provide information about
the business major at UW-Parkside for students who may be
undecided or within the early years of the business program - all
from an upperclassman's perspective, or "done for students by
students," as presenter Jeremy Scuffham commented. "Business
by Students" - a precursor to Major Mania - was also created
to give students helpful suggestions and considerations in their
college career planning. The presentations were surrounded by
an overlying theme that students should plan early and try to
obtain as much real world, resume-filling experience as possible
before they graduate.
At each of the events select upperclassmen business students
discussed past internship and project experience they were able to
obtain through the business program at UW-Parkside. Business
student presenters included Kim Brogan, Brian Cartledge, Adam
Fornal, Michelle Therkelsen and Aaron Zabler. Students who
were unable to attend - or who have a suppressed curiosity - yet
would like more information about the opportunities available
to them through the business program can contact Brad Piazza,
assistant dean, in Molinaro 344.

Association (PSGA) was again called to session. This
week, the subject of much debate was SUFAC, Student
Union Fee Allocation Committee. This committee is
solely dedicated to distributing monetary funds back
to student organizations on campus that suffered major
budget cuts this year. It appeared that the PSGA was
ready to vote for a proposed budget for allocating these
funds until Senator Xavier Solis objected the motion
for the vote to pass, stating that the PSGA should be
allotting more funds back to student organizations than
proposed. Solis' objection was followed by a point
of information by Senator Rebecca Nicke that the
proposed budget was incorrectly tallied. The PSGA
agreed to table, or put on hold, the approval of the
proposed SUFAC budget until a properly documented
budget proposal can be submitted for vote. A good
idea but another delay, yet, to an already overdue and
desperately needed solution.
Another issue that was brought up by Jason
Pinkowski, who is the director of shared governance
within PSGA, was his proposal on department
meetings throughout campus. Pinkowski is a political
science major and thought it would be very beneficial
for him to attend a political science department
staff meeting. Pinkowski found that his presence
at the meeting was not warmly received. Upon this
experience, Pinkowski wants to recruit one student
of every major to attend their own department staff
meeting and report on that meeting to the PSGA.
Pinkowski hopes that this plan of action will greatly
benefit students as to what is going on in regards to
their major on campus.
On a sad note, Senator Molly Meier reported that
her quest for UW-Parkside to adopt a book rental
program has been denied. Meier said she is now part
of the committee that is working to try and extend
Follett's existing contract with UW-Parkside for
another year. Meier stated that hopefully a book rental
program proposal would be approved by the fall 2006
semester. Thanks anyways Senator Meier for your
hard work and efforts to try and help the student
body!
The PSGA did agree to rent a bus to transport
students to the men's basketball game in Madison
on November 10. The PSGA thought it would be
a nice gesture toward the student body and a great
way to show support for the athletics department.
PSGA also rented vans for Election Day. PSGA has
reserved two vans, which were driven by volunteer
senior citizens, to transport students who do not
have vehicles to the nearest voting poll so that they
could vote. What a great idea to help support the
election and get young voters to the polls.
The meeting ended with the nomination of two
new people to the PSGA cabinet. Eric Schultz was
voted in as the new SUFAC advisor and Megan
Shuemate was voted the new public relations
coordinator. Both recipients were nominated b\
PSGA President Chris Semenas and were voted
in instantly. We look forward to seeing what both
new members will contribute to the PSGA. As
a reminder, every member of the UW-Parkside
student body is welcome to attend PSGA meetings,
which occur every Friday at noon in Molinaro 137.
Feel free to come and share your ideas and opinions
Monopoly on Campus
BY JASON GRIFFES
Webster's dictionary defines the word monopoly as "exclusive
ownership (as through command or supply)" or "a commodity controlled
by one company." In analyzing this definition it can be said with all
certainty that there is a monopoly on the UW-Parkside campus. This
monopoly is Aramark, the food service provider that controls the pncing
and selection at Parkside Cafeteria, Java City and Wylie Market. The
contract with Aramark was started in 2001 and continues until 2008,
making them UW-Parkside's exclusive food service provider for those
seven years. „ ,
According to Michael Bennett, food service director for Aramark
here at UW-Parkside, Aramark is the largest food service provider in the
United States and the third largest food service provider m the world.
Before the contract with Aramark was agreed upon a company called
Sodexho was the food service provider for the UW-Parkside community.
Sodexho went to the Union two years before their contract was up and
told them that they wouldbe pullingtheir:servicesfromtheumversity du<3
to the fact that they had not made any revenue since they started at U W-Parks .
The company that was here before Sodexho left for the same reasoa
After Sodexho's withdraw the Union administration knew that the meal plans
would have to be reevaluated in order to make the campus look atochve to
other food service providers. According to Denms Casey assistan dimctor UW
Parkside Union it was speculative that UW-Parkside would attract any bidders at
all. Casey stated that there were "10 that showed up for the walk through and o

Haunted Tunnels - What A Terror-iffic Time
BY AMBER TAYLOR
The frightening debut of the popular event "Haunted Tunnels' was hosted by
the Parkside Activities Board (PAB), the Residence Hall Association (RHA), and
the Parkside Association of Wargamers (PAW) on October 27 and 28.
The initial theme of the haunted tunnels was horror movies. The "terroriffic"
tunnels started on the main floor of Molinaro Hall, where students took the
elevator down (four to five people at a time) to the dark tunnels below where
they were led through the maze. Those who survived the horrific terrors of the
tunnel below were let out in the Den. The overall turnout of students was great.
"There was a constant line the entire night, and we even had to go a little over 10
p.m. just to accommodate the crowd," said Kristy Radspinner, the special events
coordinator of PAB. By the end of the second night, Radspimier estimated the final
student attendance count to be somewhere around 300.
"Everyone did a wonderful job staying in character the entire time and every
organization did an amazing job sticking to our initial theme," Radspinner said.
Within the tunnel, there were people playing roles of characters from such horror
movies like Scream, The Exorcist, The Crow, and there was even a girl who played
Samara (from The Ring) who sat in a long sleeved night gown, wearing a very
long wig and face paint.
Each organization had their own volunteers, but everyone was willing to
assist in each other's sections and share materials. Each organization had to be
very creative when it came to structure (high ceilings, etc). "All the planning and
hard work paid off in the end. Everything came together as we had hoped,' said
Radspinner.
When asked her favorite part of the haunted tunnels was Radspinner responded,
"I worked at the end of the tunnel, so I really got to see the facial expressions and
hear the comments of people as they left the tunnels. Everyone that came past me,
usually running, was either commenting on how scared they were, how much fun
they had, or trying to blame each other for being scared."
Radspinner had one last comment; "I'd like to give a huge thanks to everyone
New Diversity Director Has A Variety to Offer Parkside Students
just to play and enjoy games.
Saad has some goals that she
would like to accomplish this semester.
As president of MSA, she aims to,
"increase awareness of what is Islam
and what are Islamic traditions. Islam is
peace, not terrorism. Being Muslim is a
way of life." As for her role as diversity
director, Saad says, "I am going to be
very active in PSGA when Human
Rights Week occurs. I want public
awareness about safety on campus." In
regards to making campus feel safer,
Saad has proposed to PSGA that they
organize a unity march on campus.
"I want to accomplish unity with the
student body. I want to try and eliminate
hate crimes and I want recognition of
hate crimes." Saad says that her other
hope as diversity director is that, she
wants "every student organization to be
represented on campus and for student
government to be actively supportive
of student organizations and different
diversity on campus."
who had any involvement in making the tunnels a huge success. From those
who put in all the behind-the-scenes work to those who supported it and came
to the event - not to mention the donations of canned goods and money. It was
a lot of work and there was a lot of dedication. Everyone worked incredibly
well together and we all had fun in the process."

Sarah Saad is the newly appointed
diversity directorfortheParkside Student
Government Association (PSGA). The
responsibility' of the diversity directorof
PSGA is to make sure that all diversity
is equally represented on campus. The

to race,
gender, sexual

and religion.
It is also
the duty of

UW-Parkside
with
Sarah Saad
director to go to
organizations on the
campus and communicate
them about being more effectively
represented by the PSGA.
Saad is 21 and was born in America
but has strong familial ties to Egypt,
where she and her family vacation
every summer to visit her relatives.
Saad is majoring in business here at
UW-Parkside, mainly concentrating in
marketing, and expects to graduate in
fall, 2005. She also hopes to acquire
a minor in interior design so that she
may one day open her own business in
which she will market creative arts and
interior design.
Saad keeps herself very busy with
her course load of 18 credits, tutoring
students on the piano and viola, and
by her participation in many student
organizations on the UW-Parkside
campus.
In addition to being the diversity
director of PSGA, Saad has also cofounded
and serves as president of the
Muslim Student Association (MSA) at
UW-Parkside. The UW-Parkside MSA
is part of a nationwide organization in
which its members must be Muslim
to qualify for membership but differs
in that you do not have to be Muslim
in order to attend the club's meetings.
In fact, Saad welcomes all Muslim
and non-Muslim students to attend.
"Everyone can come to our meetings,
give their ideas, and participate in MSA
events." The MSA meets Wednesdays
at noon in Molinaro 167.
The MSA serves as a support
group for Muslim students as well as
a place for non-Muslim and Muslim
students to go and interact with each
other. The MSA was brainstormed last
year but has lost some support due to
the still overwhelming fear a lot of
Muslim students have about openlyadmitting
they are in fact Muslim.
Saad commented that, "There are many
Muslims on campus but a lot of them,
such as women who have chosen to
stop wearing their veils, conceal it in
order to shield themselves from hate
crimes."
Saad is also a member of the Parkside
Association of Wargamers (PAW).
PAW is an organization dedicated to
gaming. Members of PAW participate
in role-playing games like Dungeons
and Dragons, as well as computer
games and also have an interest in
Anime, which is Japanese artimatioa
Saad says what she likes about PAW is
tire idea of its diverse members uniting

Good Turnout for
Make-a-Difference Day
BY HENRY GASKINS
More than 130 UW-Parkside students volunteered to
help out for Make-a-Difference Day on October 20.
There were nine locations in the Racine/Kenosha area,
stretching between North Beach in Racine and Bong
Recreational Park west of Interstate 94 in Kenosha.
Make-a-Difference Day is sponsored nationally by
USA Today and the Points of Life Foundation, which
is a national volunteer organization. Always the fourth
Saturday in October, Make-a-Difference Day has been
helping people grow throughout America for years.
"This is at least the fifth year that Parkside has done
it," said Casey Jones, volunteer and experiential
program coordinator at UW-Parkside. "It's a great
opportunity to help your community."
A lot of students volunteer to gain
experience, and it can also further their interest,
according to Jones. Tamika Kennedy, a student here
at UW-Parkside who volunteered during Make-a-
Difference Day, agreed.
"I'm volunteering because they needed some help,
and it's a fun way to meet people," said Kennedy,
"and I did meet wonderful people today. I also learned
how to paint today, which is something I've never
done before. And I got some muscles, because I was
carrying tables. I feel like I put in some work."
"One of the most important things after your grades,
whether you go to grad school or look for that first
job, will be what you did in college," said Jones. "And
if you can't say more than 'I went to class everyday'
or if you can't point to something that gave you
experience, you're going to be in hot water. This is
one way to do it and help your community at the same
time."
Almost 20 student organizations here
volunteered to help out at the various locations. Black
Student Union will receive a plaque for being the
organization that had the most members participate in
Make-a-Difference Day.
"This is definitely the starting point of volunteering
more and more," said Kennedy.
Opportunities to volunteer are ongoing. There is a
Make-a-Difference Day in the Spring, along with
Hunger Clean Up in April. For more information, stop
by the Career Center and ask for Casey Jones.

Sorry, I Have to Work Tonight
BY HEATHER TODD
Ok, it's a well known fact that
students don't always have the easiest
time paying for the education that is
so crucial for success. When we were
young there was always a certain
amount of pressure from adults and
peers to pursue a scholarly degree.
Since we have all grown, and come of
age, we find ourselves doing just that.
Here's the catch, school means money,
and that may be something, if you're
like me, there is not much excess of. So
we find ourselves jobs; that wonderful
three letter word that means giving up
a significant part of your leisure time to
endure. Work is work, but sometimes
work is an interesting/eerie addition to
a variety of stories you will someday be
telling your grandchildren. So how do
UW-Parkside students make it through
these fiscally rough years? Easy, they
do anything they can.
While interviewing students around
campus I genuinely found myself
surprised at the variety of positions held
by individuals. One of the most frequent
responses to my question "Where do
you work?" was "a grocery store." Huh.
Never would have guessed.
The majority of students who
gave this response have held their
specific positions for years. Some
have progressed from bag-boy to
cashier, some have taken that leap
into management, but all still cany the
same weight of bringing fresh produce
and necessary goods to us i n a timely
manner and at decent prices. Taking
these examples to another level I found
myself compelled while listening to a
paper boy give his heart warming tale.
For those of you who believed nobody
like this young gentlemen existed,
you were wrong. There are still those
brave few who dare to rise at the wee NEW

Machine is located in the Bazaar
One Day *2.00
Two Days *3.00
One Week *4.00
hours of the morning, bringing us our
daily dose of information. Perhaps
their bikes are no longer the standard
mode of transportation, but the hours
are grueling and the pay is dismal. My
deepest regard goes out to these classic
few, they truly endure.
How about customer service. Sure,
a grocery store is customer service,
but not as hands on as, say, a clothing
store. How tedious and mind numbing
folding the same shirt 23 times must
become. Then there are, apparently,
the customers who simply have no
idea. They are known to wander from
rack to rack, table to table, playing
the guessing game with their sizes
and destroying the glory of the t-shirt
tower you had just constructed less than
three minutes earlier. The control
levels of these employees' tempers
must be phenomenal. Another sort of
customer service would also fall under
the category of "taken for
granted." That would be our
friendly waitresses or waiters.
This form of employment
offers fast cash and little
constraints. But, is it
worth it? How may times can
you refill one man's cola? Is
it your fault when their eggs
come out wrong? Of course it
* is. You're the server. Not many
students can find the agility
and gumption to sacrifice
their pride, allowing someone
to order them around. These
types of positions may be
considered fleeting, since it
is only a matter of time until
you snap, taking those days,
weeks, months of aggravation
and spewing it at the first
available target. Kudos to
you if you have been one of
those lucky bystanders which
have had the pleasure of
enjoying such a scene.
How about those
unemployedstudents?Perhaps
your thinking, "There is no
money in unemployment."
Ah, there most certainly is.
Our medical technologies
have created wonderful
systems of donation to help
those who choose not to be
confined to a set pattern of
the "punch in, punch out" lifestyle. In
fact, right here in our very own paper
we advertise means of obtaining money
simply by allowing a technician to stick
a two-inch-long needle into your arm.
This process is known as donation of
plasma. It might sound glamorous but
maintain your excitement for just a
moment while you discover the grim
truths behind this miracle investment
of your time. The needle is only the
beginning to a 1lA hour adventure down
donation way. They offer entertainment
during the entire process, but that
usually consists of the new girl four
chairs down breaking out in tears at
the sight of the technician and needle.
Bmises are known to occur and ac ookie
is the least of your concerns when you
can't focus on the sidewalk as you make
your way out of the building. It's been
said to be worth the money, but when
they pay by weight, which local clinics
do, anyone weighing under 190 pounds
should look for a more solid form of
employment possibilities.
Every heard that sex sells? Sure it
does. Right here in our very own school
you could be paid $12 per hour to
show us your goodies and model nude.
There is no need to be coy, it's for art,
and with that sort of hourly salary I'm
surprised more students aren't jumping
on the nudist bandwagon. Now, taking
a different approach to nude co-eds we
may find ourselves exploring the less
artistic side of taking it all off. Perhaps
not nearly as advertised as the human
drawing classes this profession finds its
own regulars with no problem. Strippers
or live entertainers, as you have seen
so blatantly advertised, are known to
bring in the kind of cash that it takes to
put themselves through those years of
undergrad work. The human body lias
been an asset for centuries, using it is
just taking advantage of the "natural"
side of our personalities.
All in all we've been able to
identify one key element we share - the
need for money. We were all wired
with different abilities and that's great
because I don't feel the need to fight
over a cashier position at Sam's Club.
Keep up the good work students. It will
all be over soon enough and then you
get to start that wonderful journey into
the real world. Hope it's a good one.

College Life - First Year Experiences
BY: AMBER TAYLOR
Freshman year of college is a time filled with anticipation, some anxiety and
wonderful discoveries. Along with these feelings come curious questions: Will I be
able to make friends? Will I be able to keep up with college courses? The first year
of college not only answers these questions, but also teaches people more about
themselves.
The one major change incoming freshman notice is that college is a lot diffe rent
from high school. The workload dramatically changes (more heavy and intense),
endless study nights go into the wee hours of the morning, and some become more
independent by living away from home.
Dave Myslinski, a freshman from Sturtevant, Wis., states, "As a freshman, you
have to make the transition from high school to college, which can be hard unless
you're willing to try and put forth a strong effort to study and go to class. There
are a lot of temptations that you can fall victim to, mam more than I thought. It is
important that you keep up on your studies and the readings."
The first year of college can be very overwhelming, but the time will fly by
faster than you know. In the end, you will meet new people from all over the world,
have a better understand of the "real" world, and most importantly understand
more about yourself. Even if the first year, or even first semester does not go as
planned, do not give up. College is one of tire best times of your life ... do not give
up on your dreams - reach for the stars!
of three sisters who can telekinetically
manipulate paper. It was one of those
"had to be there" kind of things. Among
other features were Served, which is a
futuristic drama in which certain humans
have augmented bodies called "alters;"
and Robin Witchhunter, a serial program
that deals with a blond female witch
living in Japan who works with a secret
organization to help stop witch-on-witch
crime. Again, probably had to be there.
Nonetheless, there were a wide variety of
programs, all of them thought-provoking
as well as tummy-tickling and full of
sexual innuendo. The adult themes tend to
be thorough-going in anime. "Pokemoiv

Things?
By Nicholas Michael Ravnikar
Student organization Parkside Action Wargamers hosted an entertaining selfstyled
"Anime Blitz" on October 20th, 2004. It was a shame that more students
didn't show, as member Resee Hoffmann did some extensive legwork to get the
rights for PAW to show the anime. contacting a slew of representatives from AD V
Films, Manga, Geneon-Pioneer and Tengimoto~some of the top producers and
distributors of Japanese animation. Some Parkside students may be familiar with
Cartoon Network's increasingly popular Adult Swim, which features anime, as
well as the popular Digimon, Pokemon, Dragonball Z, or even Sailor Moon.
"Cartoon network has helped give anime a pretty substantial boost in American
culture," Hoffmann said, adding "Although some viewers take issue with the
editing liberties that they 've taken with Adult Swim." For most of this generation
of college students, however, cartoon imports go back a lot farther. Thundercats,
Ybltron or Speed Racer? All of them from the land of the rising sun. Kyle Starr,
another PAW member, has been a fan of Japanese animation since he was 10
years old. "Anime offers a wide spectrum, from the purely comical to the deeply
philosophical. When you've seen one U.S. cartoon, you've pretty much seen them
all. Japanese animation tends to be a lot more challenging. People who are new to
the genre should probably brace themselves for mature viewing if they're going
to watch an original version." This was certainly true of the episode of Read or
Die that was shown. The story followed a female novelist threatened by a terrorist
She was eventually saved from the evil terrorist and his twin brother by a team

Aramark is required by the contract
to give a commission back to the Union
each year. This is determined by the
profit that they make over the year up
to a maximum of $60,000. Last year
Aramark gave $60,000 back to the
Union. The maximum will be cut in half
this year due to the feet that an emp loyee
of Aramark will be working on a sales
oriented campaign to try to promote
using the Union for functions that will
bring in revenue by outside groups. The
goal of this, according to Casey, is to
bring more events to the Union thereby
increasing campus awareness and
providing Union dollars.
The Union and Aramark encourage
student and faculty involvement.
When asked if students had a part
in the decisions of food selection
and dining choices that are made by
Aramark at UW-Parkside, Bennett
said, "It is important that students are
involved." When the original contract
with Aramark was instituted the Union
tried to get as much student and faculty
involvement as possible. This was done
by setting up a committee, and having
open meetings and listening sessions to
get as much input as was possible.
The Dining Service Committee,
headed by Casey, also tries to meet two
times per semester to discuss students
and faculty's current ideas and issues
with the food sendee. These meetings
are open to anyone who would like to
attend. There has not been a meeting
yet but Casey hopes to have one in
November. When the meeting is
scheduled he will e-mail all of the
student organizations to inform them of
when and where.
Why doesn't UW-Parksi.de have
a self-operated food service system in
place? "I can tell you it would be more
expensive," was Casey's reply. This was
an option that was looked into when
Sodexho left the university. The reason
for the additional expense would be
that unlike Aramark and other national,
companies UW-Parkside would have
to purchase the food locally instead
of having fee ability to shop around
nationally. For this same reason there
would be far less choices of food on a
daily basis.
Is there a monopoly on the UWParkside
campus? Without a doubt. The
real question is can there be a feasible
food system on campus without it
being a monopoly? The answer to this
is that it probably cannot exist without
inflating prices to an even higher cost
than they are today. Although Aramark
is not perfect, corporations like it may
be the only chance that UW-Parkside
has for an acceptable food system.

The 2003 women's volleyball
season ushered in a new era for the UWParkside
program. Head Coach, Nichole
Roethig, was hired after a nationwide
search in mid-May - the eighth head
coach in the program's histoiy, which
originated in 1975. Roethig did not
have the opportunity to run her own
recruiting program upon arriving,
which is something that she now does.
Making the conference tournament will
be a little tougher this year because the
field has been reduced from eight to
six teams. Divisions within the league
will no longer exist. Roethig said, "The
good thing about our conference is
that it is very competitive. From one
week to the next, you don't know who
is going to win or lose. Even if a team
wins every other game there's still a
chance to advance."
Coach Roethig is a native of
Wauwatosa, Wis., where she attended
Milwaukee Pius XI High School and
led the Lady Popes to four conference
championships and four state titles. She
was an all-conference selection in her
senior season. Did Roethig ever think
that she would be coaching a team
so close to her hometown? "I never
thought so, but I hoped that I would
after graduate school."
The team played its first 17
matches of this season on the road with
a less than .500 record, but according
Roethig, "We are still in shape to make
it into the regional tournament. We
have a lot of conference games left to
play and some regional ones as well."
The team played six top 25 teams in the
pre-season, which is great experience. It
should help them in conference games.
The Ranger News asked Roethig
how her new recruits are performing
and adjusting to the team and she
replied, "They're fitting in well. We
don't have any freshman starters in the
line-up. It takes time to learn the system
and the game and to get into shape. All
of the freshman are developing at an
appropriate rate, which is the rate that
a normal freshman would." According
to Roethig, these players have an
excellent attitude and are hard workers
in practice as well as on the court. When
asked what she might have learned
from coaching last year, Roethig smiled
and said, "This year has been more of a
learning experience for me! Actually, I
would say that one should not be afraid
to set their expectations too high."
As for the single most important
attribute that she feels her players can
The women's volleyball team celebrates after scoring a point.
have on and off the court, Roethig said,
"To know how to manage conflicts,
handle stress, and to have a balanced
social/family life."
Will the team be able to fill the
void of losing two second team All-
Conference selections from last season?
"We're looking to senior, Kandi Bauer
to help us. She can be of assistance to
us at any position. Sophomore, Ashley
Vycital, has helped us offensively, too,"
said Roethig. In addition, as for two
other seniors, Brooke Strickland and
Noelle Swartz, "They are contributing
a lot again, as they have in past seasons.
Brooke is a woikhorse. We're hoping
that she is an All-Conference selection
this season. Noelle is our offensive
and defensive leader. She has great
leadership skills," said Roethig.
As for Assistant Coach Rob Wolter,
Roethig said that, "He runs drills and
does a lot of camera work and does
our statistics. I trust Rob in the event
that I can't make it to a practice or
something to work with the players as
if I were there and the team wouldn't
miss a beat." Roethig and Wolter knew
each other at Mankato State University,
where they both played volleyball.
It's a good thing that Roethig
has some faith in Wolter, as there
are wedding bells in their future.
Congratulations, Nichole and Rob!

Freshman psychology major, Sotiya Sahagian,
was determined in forming women's rugby team
here at UW-Paikside. Well, she has succeeded. You
might have seen her hanging posters in the hallways.
Assistant Coach/player, Todd Streeter, of the men's
rugby team, also contributed some posters and showed
his support of the team.
When Sahagian got phone calls from perspective
players, she asked them to spread the word. So far
this has worked as the team has 15 players. The team
is hoping to attract around 25 players, which is an
additional 10 by the time the spring season begins.
"We need to make sure that the players are committed
to going to practices and we are still looking for
a head coach. I am hoping that everyone who has
signed up will show for practices because once we
get enough people we'll be picking player positions.
The ones who make the practices will get the playing
time. It doesn't matter if they have seniority or not,"
said Sahagian.
The competition will include teams from the
Milwaukee, Wis. area, and there are at least five
waiting to compete with the UW-Parkside squad.
There will be a small fee, which helps the team
reserve a practice field. Any lady here who is
interested in playing should try out, no matter if you
have experience in the game or not.
When asked if the ladies will play under the same
rules as the men do, Sahagian said, "Yes, the same
rules apply. This is known for being a gentlemen's
sport or in our case, a ladies!" As for when practices
will start, Sahagian said, "I am hoping to start training
in the winter, things like running on the track and
hitting the weight room while it's cold outside. In high
school, we played for three hours outside in the snow.
But we won't be doing that here. Don't worry."
Sahagian was given the opportunity to voice
herself to the prospective female players on campus,
and added, "This i$ a great sport. It is a good way
to stay in shape and to let out some aggression. Tliis
is not just a sport where you take hits and push each
other around. The physical content of the sport is
fulfilling. I hope to hear from some of you in the
future." Sahagian can be reached at extension 3189 il

Student-Athletes Expose the Experience . Sports Shots

The Ranger News asked some
student-athletes here at UWParkside
to share their thoughts of
what the student-athlete experience
is like for them. Here is what some
of them said:
Noelle Swartz, a senior outside hitter
on the women's volleyball team,
and native of Canton, Mich., said,
"In a word, it's hard! With classes,
practices, studies, and games there is
not too much time for anything else.
Some of us find part-time jobs to fill
up the tiny time slots left. Roadtrips
make for great memories and bonding
experiences, but are mostly spent
trying to study on buses while dealing
with the highs and lows of playing
college athletics under constant
pressure. It is worth it though. The
great friendships and experience that
come with playing sports and being
on a team is more rewarding than
any others I've had. The key to being
a student-athlete is to use your time

wisely." As for her thoughts on the
success of this year's team go, Swartz
added, "As much as I would love to
make the team goal to win every game
this season, I have realized that no
matter how successful a team is, it is
nothing without passion for the game.
A group of people all playing a sport
is not a team until they have heart. My
goal for this season is to go out every
game and to play with intense passion
and heart, which is something that is
inside each and every athlete on the
court."
Sher Yang, a junior midfielder on
the men's soccer team who hales
from Robbinsdale, Minn., said,
"Being a student-athlete is very
time consuming. There are many
commitments and sacrifices a studentathlete
must make for his or her team.
Friends, family, personal time, and
jobs must be arranged around your
sport, not to mention the schoolwork
that has to be completed for classes.
It is rewarding though, being able
to meet with all of your teammates,
building a bond with them, and
working together to achieve team
goals."
Brian Cartledge, a senior defender
on the men's soccer team and native
of Greenfield, Wis. said, "It tends
to be demanding to try to juggle
academics, athletics, and the rest of
your life, especially during the season
when there are long road trips and
multiple games on the weekends. It
develops a good discipline of time
management and leads to having a
very structured life. It has advantages
and disadvantages. One advantage
is living an efficient, productive life.
A disadvantage is the repetition of
waking-up, going to class, going to
practice, studying and then doing it all
over again. This schedule is no more
demanding than the other students
who juggle academics with their
family/social lives are. Our paycheck
is having the opportunity to play in
games on the weekends. This is more
rewarding with support from the
student body and we are grateful for
the support."
Women's Volleyball Team
Spikes Kentucky Wesleyan
The Lady Rangers beat the Panthers
in three straight games in a GLVC
match up at Owensboro, Kentucky.
Leading the way for UW-Parkside
was Brooke Strickland, senior middle
hitter, with 23 total attacks and
Stephanie Dyson, junior defensive
specialist, with 13 digs. According to
Head Coach, Nichole Roethig, "We are
at a point in our season where every
member of our team has been given
an opportunity to show what she can
bring to our program. I hope that these
opportunities will bring forth both
team and individual success. We head
into the second half of the season as
the underdogs who are fighting our
way to the conference tournament.
As long as we never stop fighting, I
won't be disappointed, no matter what
the outcome is." Roethig said, "The
players have been playing so hard,
despite injuries, illnesses, and personal
conflicts."

Men's Soccer Team (13-2-2)
played its last game before it heads
to the GLVC Tournament. They beat
Cardinal Stritch4-0. Junior forward,
Alen Osmanovic, scored the first
goal 18:34 into the game for a 1-0
lead. The score was set up by junior
midfielder/defender, Ethan Richter,
who dribbled down field and passed
the ball to Osmanovic who then
headed the ball into the back of the net.
Joe Hnath scored the second goal off
an assist by freshman forward, Andre
Francois, and sophomore midfielder, -
Bill Haga, at 20:54 to increase the

Knight Has Lady Rangers Primed To Go
BY RUSSELL HARRIS
Sports Editor
Head Coach, Jenny Knight, is
returning for her third season as the
head coach for the women's basketball
team. Knight served as an assistant
coach during the 2001-02 season. She
had a wonderful career as a player
as she played for the University of
Louisville. She started at point guard
for the Cardinals for three years and
paced the team in assists. Knight ranks
second in school history in career
assists and is among the Conference
USA leaders in career assists. She
also led the team in steals and in free
throw percentage for two seasons.
Knight was Louisville's Player of the
Year for two seasons and led the team
to three NCAA Division I tournament
appearances. She is a Kenosha native
and attended St. Joesph's High School
where she helped lead the Lancers to
three state tournament appearances.
Knight was an all-conference player
all four years there and was an all-state
selection for her junior and senior
seasons.
When it comes to academics,
Knight has definitely been a positive
influence on her players. Her players
have over a 3.0 GPA since she has
been at the reigns. In the spring
semester of 2004, Knight's team
accumulated the highest GPA among
all athletic teams here at UW-Parkside.
"We want them to be successful
players on the court, but we definitely
stress academics and have a couple of
different programs. Things like study
halls, both home and on the road, and
we give the players academic planners
to assist them. But definitely, their
classes and academics come first," said
Knight.
Her team went 15-12 last season.
It was the best record that the women's
basketball team has ever had at UWParkside.
The Lady Rangers finished
12-8 in the Great Lakes Valley
Conference (GLVC) and this marked
the first time the team has had a
winning record in the circuit. A couple
of their season's highlights include
wins over 2004 NCAA Division II
tournament qualifiers, the Indianapolis
Greyhounds and the Northern
Kentucky Norse. UW-Parkside earned
its second consecutive GLVC postseason
bid under Coach Knight. When
asked if the team felt any pressure
now to succeed coming off a very
successful season, Knight replied, "I
don't know if it's necessarily pressure,
but we do look forward to bringing
this team to the next level. Last season
is a good stepping stone, but we have
goals to become even better. Now the
players know what success feels like.
I wouldn't call it pressure. We are
expecting more."
The team's goals include
becoming one of the top teams in the
GLVC. A long term goals is to be one
of top three or four teams in GLVC and
if this is accomplished, the team has
a good chance at an NCAA bid. "We
have a lot experience with six seniors
returning and some good young talent.
Our goals are obtainable, but it won't
be easy. We will continue to have high
expectations for ourselves, which is
something that I don't know if we've
had in the past, as this group of players
has the chance to set the tone for the
future of this program," said Knight.
The team has four new players
this season. Those players are Kim
Murphy, Ali Fairchild, Mackenzie
Heise and Nicole Watzlawick. "I
think that all four of these players
will be contributors this on our team
or wouldn't be here. The guards, Kim
Murphy and Mackenzie Heise, bring
athleticism and scoring ability to the
Lady Rangers attack. Kim is a point
guard and we lost that position last
year. She will have to learn quickly.
Every once and awhile, early on, she
will be placed in the fire. There is a
huge difference between high school
and college basketball," said Knight.
The team has some size in its
front court The probable starting
five for this squad include senior
First Team-All Conference selection,
Sammy Kromm, center, Jennifer
Braier, senior guard, Carrie Sheavy,
junior point guard, Carrie Weir, senior
guard/forward, with the fifth spot up
in the air. Competing for the fifth spot
Brenda Homar, junior guard/forward,
and Jenny Luckett, senior forward.
The Lady Rangers will try to
push the ball up floor and play an uptempo
style of basketball and will playaggressive
on defense. They will try to
show different looks defensively and
keep the opponent off balance while
they (the opponent) have possession.
Knight believes that playing good
defense will help the team to win
games. Offensively, there are some
players who can shoot the jump shot
effectively, which includes a threepoint
threat or two. Otherwise, look for
senior center, Sammy Kromm, to get
the ball in the post and go to work.
Did Knight ever expect to be a
head coach so close to home? "No,
I really didn't. I just got lucky and
took advantage of the situatioa I love
being in Kenosha and here at UWParkside
with all of the support that we
have on campus," exclaimed Knight.
Knight is one of nine children. Also,
the local community in the Kenosha
area is giving her a lot of support and
it is helping to build the fan base.
Coach Knight acquired her interest in
the game of basketball as her father
coached girls and boys basketball. In
addition, her eight brothers and sisters
all played high school basketball and
college basketball. She grew up with it
and it was everywhere.
The Ranger News inquired about
what the assistant coaches on this
team mean to herself and the team.
The two assistant coaches are Jamie
Nebel and Sheila Roux. "They're both
a crucial part of the success that we
have or don't have. They have a lot
of responsibility for teaching on and
off of the court. Coach Roux plays
a big role in the recruiting process.
Each must lead our kids in the right
direction on and off the court. The
recruiting process is very intense," said
Knight. All three coaches have a say in
which players are ultimately signed by
the program. They have a composite
fist and Knight sends the assistants out
to see various players. Knight has to
feel comfortable and make the ultimate
coach on the player, but her assistants
have a big role in helping her. "It's one
of the toughest aspects of coaching,"
Jenny Knight, Head Coach of
UWP's Women's Basketball team
said Knight.
Some of the top teams that the
Lady Rangers will face in action
include the Bellarmine Knights,
picked No. 1 in the pre-season poll, the
Indianapolis Greyhounds, the Northern
Kentucky Norse, who were nationally
ranked team last season (UW-Parkside
beat Norse last year), the SIUEdwardsville
Cougars and the Quincy
Lady Hawks.
As for learning from past
experiences in coaching. Knight said,
"I am constantly learning. I'm never
satisfied. I am constantly trying to
be the best I can be for my studentathletes.
I watch game tape or film
from other coaches to try to become
better. I attend basketball clinics to
learn from my superiors. The game
is constantly changing. I feel that if
you stop learning, it might be time for
you to get out of the game. You need
to constantly be on top off it," said
Knight.

Ismaili Gets Taste of America
Student-Athlete talks about transition to USA and more...
BY RUSSELL HARRIS
Sports Editor
Issam Ismaili is a native of
Morocco, which is in Northern Africa.
He is also a sophomore forward (No.
25) on the men's soccer team here at
UW-Parkside. Ismaili came to America
seeking a good education and the
opportunity to earn well-respected
degrees that will give him the best
chance of success in his future. He
is majoring in molecular biology/
bioinformatics and plans to attend
medical school after he completes his
undeigraduate studies. "I am not sure
where I will spend the first few years
after I leave UW-Paikside, but I plan to
move back to Morocco for good. That
is where my life is going to be. I also
moved to the America for a chance to
manage time between education and
sports as it is nearly impossible to do
elsewhere, especially back home. I
have come to figure that it is difficult
to accomplish in America also," said
Ismaili.
The Ranger News asked
Ismaili what he thought the toughest
transition was in coming to the America,
to which he said, "Nothing was easy
in making the transition to America.
Everything seemed very different to me
when I first arrived." He is confident
in his English and had good grades
throughout high school and in language
centers that he attended. "When I first
amved, I couldn't understand anyone,
thus I could not respond. I've learned a
lot about patience since moving here,"
he continued.
Our conversation turned to
athletics when Ismaili wasa sked at what
age he developed his interest in the game
that he loves. Ismaili said, "What age?
Honestly, I do not remember. I've been
playing soccer since I can remember."
Ismaili comes from a large family and
has older brothers who play the game
as well. "All my brothers loved and
played soccer. I would have to say that
my brothers have always encouraged
me, and soccer is the most popular sport
in Morocco. I have always enjoyed the
game," said Ismaili. He says that his
parents could care less about soccer.
Ismaili is an excellent player.
He spent one semester at Winona State
before transferring to UW-Parkside*. He
had to learn the American game and by
the end of the 2003 season, was comi ng
on strong as a technically clean player.
He has a wide variety of moves and can
beat people one-on-one. He is said to
have a strong shot
When asked about the
differences between soccer here and in
Morocco, Ismaili said, "The game here
is different. There are a lot of statistics
and committees that people care about
and differing strategies. It is much
different. I would call this 'American
Soccer.'"
As for any advantages he might
have being from a foreign country as
they relate to being a student-athlete,
Ismaili said, "Just leaving home coming
——
ismaili dribbles past an opponent in a game at Wood Road Field.
here and making the adjustments to a
new society and everything around me,
made me a stronger and more confident
person." Ismaili thinks that as he lives
here he learns new things every day.
Things that Americans take for granted.
"The biggest advantage is the mixture
of what I already know and what I am
learning. It is a big experience," said
Ismaili.
Ismaili said that his favorite
thing about America is its natural
beauty. Making new friends has not
been difficult for Ismaili, but it has been
different. "People think differently here
and relationships are based on different
aspects. It is a warm environment here
at UW-Parkside. People are nice and
pleasant. I appreciate every little tiling
from everybody. Sometimes a smile
from someone makes my day," said
Ismaili. Next time you see Ismaili, give
him one of your best UW-Parkside
smiles and take time to say hello.
"I would like to specifically
thank my professors who have beenv ery
understanding," Ismaili concluded.

Ask Dave
BY RUSSELL HARRIS
Sports Editor
The Ranger News met recently with UlV-Parkside Athletic
Director, Dave Williams, for his thoughts on upcoming
activities and events in collegiate athletics on campus.
Here is what Dave had to say:
Q: Why is the UW-Parkside Men's Basketball Team's
game against the Wisconsin Badgers on November 9
such an important event for this university and how is it that a Division
II school can play a Division I school?
A: "The game is an exhibition game, which means that it does not count in
either teams regular season standings. Division II programs and I have a
limit to how many games they can play during the regular season. Division
I plays 29 games. Division II plays 27 games, and every different level has
different exemptions for playing these different kind of games and that's
why people can play more of these types of games. This is a tune up game
for these teams and the reason that this has never happened before and is
happening now is because of a new rule in Division I. The Division I rule
used to be that you could play against all different types of amateur teams.
You used to see all of the big time programs play against groups sponsored
by the shoe companies. There was team Nike, team Adidas, team Reebok,
and all the different AU teams. What was happening was that some of
the Division I schools who don't run things up front were paying some of
these teams big money to come and play against them in exchange for help
with recruits. So it was becoming a shady kind of game. So the Wisconsin
Badger's Head Coach, Bo Ryan, who also coached at UW-Plattevillc and
at UW-Milwaukee, decided that he would try to put an end to it. He made
a proposal nationally to pass a rule that the only teams Division I schools
could play were NCAA sanctioned teams. The amount of money that we're
talking is staggering when the Badgers are playing a non-conference game.
For example, you could play a home and home game where the teams play
each other at each other's field houses. The expenses equal out, each team
gets to have a gate, the travel was equal, and both keep the money from
concessions from their gate. The other type of game is a guarantee game
in which the Wisconsin Badgers will say that they won't return to play
UW-Parkside, but instead will offer the Rangers money to come and play
at Madison. For a regular season game, it can approach anywhere between
$30,000 and $50,000, but I can assure you that UW-Parkside is not going to
get anything near that!
Q: Why are we now seeing Division I school's like the Badgers play against
Division II schools and so on in exhibition games?
A: "Bo Ryan, being a Wisconsin guy forever, used to be an assistant coach at
UW-Madison, the head coach at UW-Platteville and UW-Milwaukee, and
now of course is head coach at UW-Madison. One of his ways of giving
something back to all the Wisconsin system schools is playing this game. He
is playing UW-Platteville and us this year. Why us? Bo used to be the head
coach at UW-Platteville and he wants to bring those people back, and he is
playing us because he and our men's head basketball coach, Luke Reigel, are
good friends. Luke played for Coach Ryan coached alongside him as well.
He also coached Coach Ryan's sons the game of basketball at Platteville
high school. Also, because we're the Division II school in the state and UWPlatteville
is a Division III school. I mean, they need to get to be challenged
as they too are preparing for the season. While some Division III schools
are very good. Coach Ryan decided to play us first. He thinks that we would
give him a better game at this point and time."
Q: What do you think of Coach Ryan's changing this system so that
different divisions can compete against each other?
A: "The rule change that Coach Ryan made is a great thing for the Division II
schools. It gives us a chance
to get up on the main stage and it helps our budget. It gives our kids the
opportunity to compete against a team that will most likely finish the season
a Top-10 team in the nation and who are ranked at No. 3 in the Big-Ten
Conference."
Q: How and why is this good for the state and for UW-Parkside?
A: "A lot of the problems that UW-Parkside has concerns name recognition.
People are not sure sometimes
because we are not named after a city like most of the state schools. This is
overall advertising that you can't buy. We'll be on the Bottom Line on ESPN
and ever,' paper in the country. We're the first game that Bo Ryan's doing
this for. This is a great opportunity."
Sports Shots continued
Wagner Gets Offensive in Win over Southern Indiana
Dusty Wagner, a senior forward on the men's soccer team, scored two goals,
which were his seventh and eighth of the season, to help lead the Rangers past
GLVC opponent Southern Indiana, 4-0, at Wood Road Field. Riley Mewes, a
senior defender, scored once on a penalty shot and Joe Hnath added a score for
the Rangers. This shutout reduced UW-Parkside's goals-against average to an
amazing 0.49.
Grifhtts Leads Women's Soccer Team over Screaming
Eagles
Lindsey Griffitts, a senior midfielder, scored twice while Tamara Buntrock,
freshman midfielder, scored one goal in the Lady Rangers defeat of the
Screaming Eagles 3-0 at Wood Road Field. UW-Parkside dominated in the
shots-on-goal statistics with 13 compared to just one for Southern Indiana. On
a side note, their game versus the Indianapolis Greyhounds on October 23 was
cancelled due to bad weather and poor field conditions. It was rescheduled for
Monday, October 25, at Rensselaer, Indiana.
No Place Like Home for Lady Rangers
The Lady Rangers completed their third straight unbeaten season in a row at
Wood Road Field this year in soccer. The team went 10-0 on their home turf.
Future of UW-Parkside Rugby Team
Finishes Up Season
BY RUSSELL HARRIS
Sports Editor
In their last match of the season, the UW-Parkside Rugby Team went on the
road to play the Milwaukee Harlequins.
The match did not count for too much in the overall scheme of the Rangers"
season, so the starting lineup consisted of nearly all rookies. The Rangers lost
40-17, but the score did not indicate how close the Rangers were to scoring many
times. Rookies Dane Popovski, Ken Knapp, Mark Rosenow, Kevin Rock, Ryan
Peck, Alex Heijnen, Elliot Hinojosa, Tony Kardelis, and Tim Palecek all saw lots
of playing time while John Hubbard, Will Traber, Tal Goldwater, Matt Hallo,
Matt Hasenbush, Andy Stein, and Kevin Schanke all provided some \ eteran
leadership.
The team finished 1-3 in league play and 0-2 in men's club matches. "With
over half of the team being completely new this season, this was definitely a
season to build on. Next spring, we will play tougher competition to get the
players prepared for the 05 season," said Assistant Coach and player Todd
Streeter.
We resume practices for the spring 05 season in late January on Sunday
nights over at the SAC," said Streeter.. Nice job this season, Rangers. UWParkside
looks forward to seeing you back in action next seasoa

The Will and Courage in
Wilco
NOTHING 'SEVERGONNASTANDINTH
EIR WA Y(A GAIN)!!!
BY AARON WENSEL
Wilco finds itself in the mist of a successful tour
behind their follow-up album entitled "A Ghost Is Born,"
to their critically acclaimed and corporately shunned
masterpiece, "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot." After leaving Reprise
Records, who wanted to scrap their album, they signed with
Nonesuch, giving them creative control and freedom. Jim
O Rourke (Sonic Youth) produced the new album, allowing Wilco to experiment with the sound even more
than before.
When I saw them play at the Eagles Club back in August, they were cohesive. That was definitely
one of the best shows I saw this year; I highly recommend checking them out live. The band finds itself
in fine form, after Tweedy kicked the painkillers he had been using to deal with the pain of the horrible
migraine headaches, suffered since he was a kid. Wilco wrote a song "Just A Kid" for the "Spongebob
Squarepants" movie that hits theatres November 19. They will also be releasing the "The Wilco Book," four
days prior, which will include 12 previously unreleased tracks, ranging from out-takes to demos. This release
should shed some more light on Wilco's brilliant music-making process.
Never shy allowing outsiders to see what goes on within the studio, they allowed their previous
album, "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" to be documented, including the firing of lead guitarist Jay Bennet and the
fighting with Reprise records over releasing the record. Greg Kot, a leading Chicago music critic, also wrote
an insightful biography, "Learning How to Die," on the band early this year. Wilco is OIK of those groups
that prides themselves on being musicians, staying one of the most experimental bands out there, (right along
with Radiohead,) and who knows what direction they'll take next.

My Fair Lady: Damn Good Musical
BY: NICHOLAS MICHAEL RAVNIKAR
On the evening of Friday, October 22, 2004, a pleasant English accent
asked a packed house in the Communication Arts Theater to turn off its cellular
phones, pagers and young children before parting the curtains to reveal My Fair
Lady. When the accent's demands were met, what proceeded was an hilarious
and entertaining musical horserace through turn-of the 20th Century England
that unearthed a political economy of language-dialects and acculturation, as
well an exploration of the general themes of isolation and partnership. Directed
by UW Parkside professor Jamie Cheatham, the musical followed the story
of ragamuffin-qua-aristocrat Eliza Doolittle (played by Julie Sturycz) and her
tutelage under the demanding and insensitive professor of languages Henry
Higgins (Jim Sampson). The depth that all of the actors gave to their characters
on the stage balanced a sense of classical drama, heightening dramatic tension
at integral moments, with an overall tone that could be likened to the stylization
and caricature of character-in-plot often found in commedia del arte. Not only
were Sturycz's Eliza and Sampson's Higgins well-matched in their mastery of
respective accents, but their chemistry was at times pleasingly volatile.
Rounding out the cast of main characters were Eliza's doting beau Freddy
(Brandon Anderson), whose well-played infatuation toyed with the audience's
preconceptions about the line between "love at first sight" and obsession.
Michael Clickner's quirky elder Doolittle incited chuckles through out the
audience as he proceeded to auction off his daughter to Higgins at "five pounds-
-no more, no less!" then proceeding to get drunk off his winnings-only to wind
up the foremost authority on the American ethics lecture circuit. Mike Shelby's
Colonel Pickering gave balance and perspective to the fomenting Eliza-Higgins
dichotomy, playing up the officer-bachelor's perceptive absent mindedness.
On a choreographic level, Brenda Didier did a wonderful job of working
with the sizeable cast to be in step—and maintain the continuity of the story
line. Many a musical production can fall victim to song-and-dance numbers that
sorely stand out against the backdrop of the plot. However, Parkside's My Fair
Lady came out a winning model of focused and cohesive musical theatre.
One complaint, however negligible, was during a fantasy-sequence in which
Eliza fantasizes about gaining retribution against her cruel teacher (and, as
students, we're all familiar with that) many audience members noticed a strange
blinking light that was projected on stage. An otherwise wonderfully-lit show,
these "blinkies" completely distracted from the business and song of the scene.
It was not clear, either way, whether this was a planned light effect or merely an
occurrence of the dreaded "technical difficulty."
In terms of audience, however, a brief diatribe must now ensue: When
any of the readers out there happen to attend the performance of a musical, it
is important to note that clapping is not a mandatory activity. In fact, it seems
downright distracting. As mentioned earlier, the production cast and crew did a
wonderful job of creating a seamless dramatic fabric upon which both dialogue
and song could dance. This effect is much more powerfully felt if the audience
doesn't take it upon themselves to break the fourth wall and acknowledge their
own presence. As one theatergoer noted, finishing up a cigarette outside just
before the doors opened, however, musicals tend much more to be the "cash
cows" of the theater industry, as football is with college sports.

him to marry her, find a registrar, get her hair done, gather the relatives and get
married—all before 4 o'clock? This could be the description of a Hollywood
romantic comedy. And indeed it is a romantic comedy of sorts, as romance and
comedy survive in the midst of the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis. The
movie takes place on both sides of the armed border separating Jerusalem and
Palestinian settlement of Ramallah, and although the comedy occupies the
foreground, the background is dominated by checkpoints and armed soldiers, street
funerals and little boys throwing rocks, bulldozers tearing down buildings and a
general state of siege.

BY HENRY
GASKINS
The guy who writes
the counterpoint
of this column and
myself often disagree
with who gets to take
which side of the argument presented
in each "Donkey's Mouth" piece, but I
decided to take the harder one this time
for two reasons. First, I already agree
with the seven out of ten Americans
(according to Ralph Nader) who believe
medical marijuana would help the
chronically ill, and second, I wanted to
understand what those crazy, ultra liberal
nutjobs have in mind when they suggest
the decriminalization and legalization of
marijuana.
My first step was to talk to one
of those nutjobs, who asked to remain
anonymous. He said the government
had no right to tell him he cannot take
advantage of a naturally occurring
crop that had been used for thousands
of years, and then he pointed out that
marijuana has only been illegal since
1937. He went on to tell me some
corporations were worried about the
hemp industry putting the logging and
paper making industry out of business.
He said that there was immense pressure
to politicians to ban the plant, and the
psychoactive properties provided the
perfect excuse. I thought about that and
dismissed it, mainly because I thought
the guy was stoned.
My second step was the
website for the National Organization
to Reform Marijuana Laws. They
support the removal of all penalties for
the private possession and responsible
use of marijuana by adults, including
cultivation for personal use, and casual
nonprofit transfers of small amounts. The
aim is to remove responsible marijuana
smokers, who they say are otherwise
law abiding citizens, from the criminal
justice system. Some justification for this
aim comes from spending $10 billion
per year in taxpayer money, and from
arresting nearly 750,000 people per year
- "far more than the total number of
arrestees for all violent crimes combined,
including murder, rape, robbery, and
aggravated assault."
I guess they don't think
marijuana smokers belong in prison with
murders and rapists. In 1977, President
Jimmy Carter said, "Penalties against
drug use should not be more damaging
to an individual than the use of the drug
itself. Nowhere is this more clear than
in the laws against the possession of
marijuana in private for personal use."
And I thought the only reason
for people wanting to legalize marijuana
was because of its comparison to alcohol
and tobacco. You know, the fact that
50,000 people die each year from alcohol
poisoning and 400,000 die per year
from cigarettes, yet it has never been
recorded that anyone overdosed or died
from smoking marijuana. According to
BY PRESTON BROWN
As America slowly
creeps toward the
decriminalization of
marijuana many people
are finding themselves
asking, "why all the fuss?" Although
marijuana is portrayed as the jaywalking
of drugs, a closer look reveals some of
the more undesirable effects.
This year the National Institute of
Health, funded by the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services, released
a study on their website about the
adverse affects of smoking marijuana.
The study clearly states that, "marijuana
smoke contains 50 to 70 percent
more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than
does tobacco smoke." Carcinogenic
hydrocarbons are even fouler for your
body than tar, and with the average
marijuana smoker holding their hit in
twice as long as a tobacco smoker, pound
for pound the most "damage per puff' is
easily awarded to marijuana
Despite common misconception,
marijuana is addictive, although only
slightly physically, its real addictive
principles are in mental addiction,
which most users dependent on a
given drug will tell you, is the hardest
part to get over. The use of this drug
Alaska recently voted whether or not
to decriminalize marijuana. Here are
some arguments for both sides of that
issue.
also impairs short-term memory,
verbal skills, judgment, and it distorts
the users perceptions. The frequent
use of marijuana has also been well
documented to lower the immune system
and contribute to major depression
amongst many users.
The Archives of General Psychiatry,
October 2004, reported on a study taken
using identical twins where one twin
regularly used marijuana and the other
didn't, that "The odds of depression,
suicidal thoughts and attempted suicide
were 1.3 to 3.4 times more likely in the
marijuana-using twin compared with the
twin who was not a user." Not to say
that depression is caused by marijuana,
but those whose genetic and social
development leave them susceptible to
depression will probably find that taking
a downer isn't a good idea, and with
all the antidepressants advertised on
tKaoo Ar,
The Lancet, a European medical journal,
the smoking of marijuana is not harmful
to the health because it is non-toxic,
and it would be reasonable to judge
marijuana as less of a threat than alcohol
or tobacco.
But the nutjobs also believe
that, like alcohol, the use of marijuana
should never be used as an excuse for
anything, so driving and operating
machinery would be prohibited while
stoned. In general, I found that the
nutjobs want a legally controlled market
for marijuana, where consumers buy
marijuana for personal use from a safe
legal source. Similar policies exist in
parts of Europe like the Netherlands and
Switzerland, and according to NORML,
they enjoy lower rates of adolescent
marijuana use than the U.S. They say
it would reduce many of the problems
presently associated with the prohibition
of marijuana, including the crime,
corruption and violence associated with a
black market system.
Americans are seeking treatment for
depression than ever.
After the alcohol prohibition
laws of the 1920s were turned over,
Americans went to the bar where they
began a trend, according to a study
by Ohio state, that shows Americans
drink about twice as much these days
as they did in the thirties. No wonder
the organization called Alcoholics
Anonymous reports over 2 million
members alone. That's one organization,
2 million members and one seemingly
harmless drug to blame.
Proponents for legalization would
like to direct attention toward other
countries successes with drug related
issues, so let's take a look. We can
easily rule out an Amsterdam society for
Americans because the sheer geographic
size of the U.S. makes it impossible to
control with districts. In Amsterdam,
there are cafe's where people can go
do their business and leave, keeping
drugs off streets for the most part and
away from people who don't want
them. It also keeps the drugs cleaner
because they are government regulated.
However the magnitude of this country
makes such regulations impossible,
unless we decided to change to a
smaller government city/state society
where regulations of that sort could be
enforced.
We would undoubtedly see an
increase in automobile related deaths
and probably a lower percentage of
college graduates. After all, there is
a consequence to every action. For
the most part, people in favor of
legalization will talk about tax breaks
and inexpensive clothing, as well as
renewable paper resources and oils, but
we don't hear about the adverse affects
that this drug has on a mass population
of consumers who love excess. There
is a much darker side to spreading an
addictive drug into a massive population
then meets the eye.
On the bright side though, we would
more then likely see a spike in junk food
sales.

Bush Courageously Breaks
From Party Lines, Votes Kerry
Kerry Plays Partisan Politics,
Votes For Himself
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Presidential incumbent George W.
Bush showed strength and courage last Tuesday when he
broke from his party and voted for his opponent, Democratic
nominee John Kerry, for president. Reporters sat stunned, and
aides watched in confusion, but Bush advisors were calm and
collected. When questioned by the press, Bush advisor Karen
Hughes simply smiled.
"The President has shown that he is a true leader,"
said Hughes. "He has shown that he votes with his conscience,
and not for political purposes. This shows a real distinction
between the two presidential candidates. Senator
Keny voted for himself. That's selfish, and it shows the partisan
political motivation behind his vote."
Vice President Dick Cheney, who also voted for Kerry, echoed th e words of Hughes, saying that
President Bush has proven that he is the kind of l eader who will do what is right, not what is popular.
"President Bush and I believe that Senator Kerry would make a great president. So we voted for him. And
that's the difference between us and Senates' Kerry. Senator Kerry selfishly voted for himself for president.
He's playing partisan politics. And that's why the American people will vote for President Bush."
A Kerry campaign spokeswoman was confuted by the allegation. "Of course John Kerry voted for
John Kerry," she said. "Of course it's partisan. John Kerry wants John Kerry to win. John Kerry thinks John
Kerry would make a great president John Kerry agrees with John Keny on almost every issue. That's how
voting works."
Congress Decides Citizens Over
70 Not Allowed to Vote Anymore
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congress decided last week that people over
the age of 70 will not be allowed to vote in future elections. "We
think their undying patriotism is so cute, but the truth is this is the last
time," said one congressman, who chose to remain anonymous.
The reasoning for this policy decision was based on the historical
absent mindedness of the elderly. "Voting needs to be an educated
process," said the congressman. "You wouldn't let a ten yearold
vote, would you? I mean, in this past election there were incidents
where some elderly folks thought the voting booth was a restroom.
They may have fought wars and helped to build this country,
but their appeal is rapidly deteriorating, as well as their collective
memories."
Eighteen year old registered voter Brad Sippro praised the
decision as a step in the right direction. "For too long, my grandma
has been strutting around our local voting place like she owns it or
something. I want to strut when I vote for a change."
Hubert Steinbaehenhiemer, a 75 year-old Vietnam veteran
and retired mop inspector, says, "This is an outrage to elderly people
everywhere, and me and my bingo team will not stand for it. First the
rap music now this. We have rights, damnitT
Steinbaehenhiemer went on to say that he and twenty other
like-minded elderly plan to protest on Capitol Hill right after Wheel of
Fortune, a glass of warm milk, and a quick nap. "Then we will raise
hell," said Steinbaehenhiemer. .

Nude Model Gets Cold, Genitals Retreat
SOMERS, WI - Fall, It's the time of year for
football, tuitienecks and warm apple cider. It's a
time when Mother Nature is embarking on her dramatic
death, vomiting out every hue of red, orange
and yellow. It's the time of the year when it starts
to get cold, and for one Parkside student, this
oncoming change in the weather had devastating
results.
Fredrick Johnson had recently decided to
model nude for art classes in order to make extra
money. It was an intermediate drawing class like
any other, and Johnson walked in the classroom
and disrobed at the appropriate time, as he usually
did. But fifteen minutes into the session, as he
was fixed in a Grecian pose, he felt something was
missing. Moments of awkward silence passed
until he realized the problem. "It was gone, just
gone," recalls Fredrick. "I swear someone left a
window open or something. I swear, normally it's
huge. Yeah that's it, a window was open."
However, retracting genitals are no laughing
matter. While most would consider the humiliation
and emotional scarring that follows to be
very funny, no one out of the nineteen art students
is laughing. "How can I put this in my portfolio?
I mean, I would fail if I had this in," says one student,
holding up the deformed sketch of Johnson's
johnson.
As for Fredrick Johnson, he insists that he
will continue to model but is still embarrassed
about the incident. "Yeah I will still model because
I need the money. But I am definitely going to do
jumping-jacks or a brisk walk before class to get
the blood flowing. Plus I think the art department
should invest in a fluffer. Yeah a duffer would be
nice,"
First Church Of Immaculate Cleavage Founded
LOS ANGELES, CA - Scantily clad women strut, into the
dimly lit cathedral as the organist pipes out "Ave Maria"
and the choir chants Hail Mary in Latin. But the Holy
Mother never envisioned a church service as controversial
as this.
Attracting third-shift workers from the
NucleoWorks power plant two blocks away, the First
Church of the Immaculate Cleavage, opened on Oct. 16, is
the embodiment of what some call the pinnacle of New Age
Christian entertainment.
'The dancing keeps me awake. I'm sleeping if I
ain't here," said Bud Thomas, a NucleoWorks employee.
Thomas isn't alone. A survey taken by the
Christian Fellowship for Entertainment during the
Christmas season (when more people attend church)
showed that 98.7% of adult males would be more likely to
attend church services that featured lap dancers, pole
dancers or even strippers.
Rev. Duaae Lewise was the first to take a jump
into this pool of interest. "Most church leaders are against
this movement, but if a few women with long legs and big
breasts can bring in more people, I see it as a good thing.
The more men we can get to attend church, the more souls
we can save from eternal damnation," said Lewise.
But where do these talented women come from?
Two of the church's top performers, Bambi and Angola
Meteor, are former Hooter's girls and Playboy playmates,
respectively.
'This is my opportunity to do something for my
community. Beauty should be shared to help spead
legs...um, I mean-faith," said Meteor.
"I just got these done for Sunday," said Bambi,
referring to her E-eup implants. 'This one is 'Holy' and this
one is 'Spirit.' You can meet the Father and the Son at
church this weekend."
Despite, the widespread appeal of these new services,
which feature a forty-minute pole-dancing routine and
lap dances for anyone who donates to the building fund,
some people are calling foul.
"Last week, my fourteen-year-old son snuck out of
his bedroom window to attend service at this sinful church.
How can I protect the innocence of my child when there
aren't any limits on who they admit to these things?" said a
concerned mother.
Overall, church attendance has doubled in the past
week and is expected to triple within the next week With
the success of this new program, experts expect to see more
dancing, half-naked women at churches statewide.

New Paris Hilton Video Includes
"Special Edition" Changes
By Matt Glascock
Assistant Professor at Glen Phillips Short Order Cook Academy
. Alter speeding ail last week screening the new Paris Hilton II: Special Edition video, I feel pretty j
much drained. I thought many of the changes enhanced the experience, but, many of what the
director calls "improvements'* frustrated me.
I felt that the original Paris Hilton videos were charming in their gritty realism -- it w as
like the Blair Witch Project of porn, After repeated viewings of this latest, version, it's clear to me
that they must have spent ten times as much on post-production as they allocated for the entire
budget of the first movie. f -
Bui that's pretty much the only place they spent any money. They still haven'rfixed the
shoddy writing, or complete lack of plot. Much of the dialogue seems contrived, while other
pairs seem completely unnecessary. For example, how many times can a woman really scream,
"Oh, God!" before it just gels old? While 1 was frustrated with most of the movie, there wire
some pans that really shined. But I'll just leave those to
RATING:
We hem at The State sometimes make mistakes. * We
fit our last is sue, we implied that
Dick Cheney was a vampire. We
apologize. He is actually a orewerewolf
crossbreed.
Last month we said that kitten sacrifice
was a good way to ward of evil
spirits. Actually, it's good for a lot
of other things, too. For instance,
getting rid of kittens.
fn our last issue, we proclaimed that
Vin Diesel kicked ass. Well, we
were wrong, Vin Diesel actually
lacks 57% more ass than previously
calculated.
In our last 'Letters to the Editor,'
we printed a letter that was written
by actor Russell Crowe. This was
false. The writer of the letter was
actually local flourist Russel Crow.

IFrequent Barnes & Noble To
Meet Intellectual Guys
By Samantha Rockwell
Sales Associate, Baby Gap
There just arent any good guys out there these days! They're all dumb sports nerds that are
boring after two sentences, or else too wrapped up in themselves. Girls, you know what I'm
talking about! The ones that seem like Mr. Right are really Mr. 'Im-pretending-to-be-caringand-
funny-but-ril-never-call-you-again-once-I-get-you-in-bed'.
Well, I have a solution! Barnes & Nobles! Think about it! It's the perfect place to
meet guys who can actually carry on a decent conversation. Guys with substance, you know?
They've got those perfect tables, right by the window, so you can check out who's entering.
And then it's one quick move over to the tall narrow tables in the main isle that are just built
for two people. From there you can watch over the whole store, and when the guy of your
choice walks by, you languishly put down the book and act like you really need some company.
/ try to guess what types of books he likes, but that's just hit and miss, so dont waste too
much time running to each section of the store and grabbing a different book each time he
walks by. Besides, comics and guitar books always seem to get me the most glances.
And some Barnes & Nobles now have Starbucks in them! I don't drink coffee, but
cute guys seem to, so whenever I see a cute guy in the Starbucks line, in Barnes & Nobles, I
quick jump up and get in line behind him. I mean, how perfect can you get!? Intellectual
AND cute! I know it's a pain to pay five bucks for an overpriced wildberry muffin when you
aren't hungry, but it's worth it if you can start a conversation with that guy next to you. Even
if he doesn't turn and ask you anything, sometimes you can stand there and smell his cologne.
That's always nice.
So girls, don't give up! That perfect man does exist, and now you know how to snag
him, or at least swap opinions about the newest David Sidaris book. Get yourself to the nearest
Barnes & Nobles today! Just don't take the one on Hwy 31 - that's mine!

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear The State,
I had the privilege of reading your most recent
issue contained within the Ranger. Let me first say that
you are God. I sleep with my State collection in hopes
that its genius will somehow seep into me.
There was one thing 1 was simply overjoyed
with, and that is the fact that you love Vin Diesel as much
as I do. J thought that my love of Vin Diesel could be
shared with none, but now? Now my favorite college
periodical has proclaimed that same love. In conclusion,
Vin Diesel kicks ass.
Sincerely,
Don Bryers
Dear Don,
We thank you for your commitment to our publication.
We commend your dedication and applaud
your honesty. You speak many truths. We are God.
Yes, Don, Vin Diesel, in fact, does kkk a whole
bunchaass. And he will continue to do so. Check our
corrections in this issue; I think you will be pleasantly
surprised. You will find t hat Mr. Diesel kicks a great
deal more ass than even we previously thought.
Again, thank you for your adoration of Vin
Diesel and The State.
Sincerely,

Oh, I See. So, Now You're
Not Talking To Me?
By Doug Breen
Quality Control, Kenosha Granary
Honey, I think we should -- honey?
Oh, what? Now you're not. talking to me?! Ugh...why do you always
have to be like this? Like you are so much better than me. Like you
don't ever make mistakes. I'm sorry. There, I said it. It was just one big misunderstanding.
When I said your sister looked hot in that dress I was complimenting the dress, not her body.
C'mon. you have to admit it: she looked hot in that dress, the way it h ugged her curves and
made her cleavage pop out, and the way it was cut just below her... ah... urn.... Well, anyways,
she's nothing compared to you... I'm sure. And it's not all my fault, you know. You blew it
way out of proportion. We just hat! a communication failure. It takes two to tango, right?
Right?
Fine. The old silent treatment, eh? Well, two can play at that game. I guess we're
just gonna sit here in silence, then. See if I care. You think you're so clever, don't you?
Sitting there in your silence. Acting like you don't care. Frankly, I think it's immature. All of
my other girlfriends would at least communicate their — uh.. .nevermind.
Honey, I love you. You know that, right? Well, do you have anything you want to say
to me? Huh? Still not talking, eh? Fine. I'm glad. I didn't want to hear you anyways.
Finally, 1 don't have to deal with your voice grating on my nerves. I bet you don't have anything
important to say anyways.
Heh, I see you're too smart for reverse psychology. I'm glad I have a girlfriend as
clever as you. I'm lucky to have you. You're so smart and beautiful and kind and thoughtful
and... urn... hot, and caring. 1 need you so much. Just talk. Just say anything! You're such a
frigid bitch! Is this about the hooker?! Jesus, I've told you a thousand times. I swear, her
business card said she was a stripper. Why does every tiring have to go back to die hooker?
Always.
Ugh... well, congratu-friggin'-lations! You won, I give up, okay. You won. Now
you can say something. Say something! Please? Honey? Fine, whatever.

Automatic
e-mail
forwarding
on the UW-Parkside's
e~mai1system has been phased
out. Incoming
students
used to
I
be
able to select an option when
I
setting up their UW-Parkside
\ e-mail account
that would allow
them
to automatically
forward
any e-mails
sent to their UW-
Parkside account
to
their primary
e-mail account.
Due to some incidents
in the
past, however,
this automatic
e-mail forwarding
option is
notavailable
anymore.
It was
Ann
Marie
Durso,
UW.Parkslde's
chief
Information
officer
Forwarded
W1PZ
Creates
Position
when automatic
forwarding
was ~
of Diversity
Director
In
place due to some failure or •
filtering
that occurred
on the
third party mail system or in
shipping
the messages
over the
~xtemal network,"
. There have been many cases
in
the world that have dealt
with identity
theft and worries
ov~r information
security.
By
taking away the automatic
e-
mailing
option from all incoming
students,
Uw-Parkside
can keep
track of all the e-mails that are
being sent and received.
This
prevents
the chance of some
unwanted
intrusions
within the
e-mailing
system.
However,
continuing
students
who selected
the
automatic
forwarding
option
when they opened
their UW-
Parkside
e-mail account
will still
be receiving
the forwarded
e-
mails. This option was not taken
away from continuing
students.
What else has been taken
away from the e-mail system?
According
to Ann Marie Durso,
it
has only been "the automatic
forwarding
that is being phased
out to allow for receipt and
storage
of e-mail messages
on
the ParksideMail
Servers
so we
can confirm
delivery
and recover
messages
in the event that [they]
are accidentally
deleted
or lost."
To further prove why some
heavy duty management
was
needed on the e-mailing
system.
UW-Parkside's
Computer
Network
Services
has taken
note of (be e-mail trends at
UW-
discontinued
at the end of the
spring 2006 semester.
This process
could be a
little confusing
for those who
don't know what the automatic
forwarding
is
all
about. For
example,
I have a UW-Parkside
e-mail address
(houdeOOO@uwp.
edu).
I also have a primary
e-mail account
at home
(watchit@wi.rr.com).
When
I first started at UW-Parkside
1
set up
my
UW-Parkside
e- '
mail and selected
the automatic
forwarding
option.
If
one of
my professors
e-mailed
me at
UW-Parkside,
then the UW-
Parkside
e-mail address
would
automatically
send
it
to my
home e-mail account.
I could
then open
and
read every single
e-mail that I received
from either
account
on just the one at home.
which is the main e-mail account
that
I
check.
Ann Marie Durso, UW-
Parksidc's
chief information
officer,
said that there have been
"many instances
of important
messages
such as payroll
notices
for our staff or specific
faculty or
administrative
office messages
to
students
that never got delivered
