Of the entering class at UW -Parkside, approximately 27 percent ranked the school's academic reputation as a reason to attend classes here. Students' plans and predic- tions while at college were com- pared between women and men. More women than men planned to work while attending school. More men than women predicted that they would make' at least a "B" average. Contrastingly, more women than men predicted that they would be satisfied with college. The largest gap between the sexes appeared in the plans of men and women in performing volunteer work or community service . The top three reasons students selected UW·Parkside have re- mained the same since 1989. The criteria include low tuition, size of the school and desire to live near home. While slightly over 40 percent of entering students here chose the university because they wanted to live near home, 21.3 percent na- tionwide selected a college for that reason. This correlates with the fact that UW -Parkside has a large enrollment of students that corn- mute, thus these numbers are not surprising. There were no signs of forced entry, and the thief tried to cover his or her tracks by replacing the case on the computer. This kind of theft would indicate the thief was trying to upgrade a computer, and knew exactly what he or she was looking for. Paul Sorenson, a technician for the Computer Science depart- .... , ment, and theperson whoreported the theft to Campus Police, said that as a result of this the Com- puter Science Department will be fastening everything down, in· eluding the covers on the com- puters. He added that this type of theft was a rare occurrence here, and that he was really disap- pointed by this because " ...the person who took this stuff was stealing from the rest of the stu- dents." Students across the country wrote letters of concern to Secre- tary of Education Lamar Alexander lastsemesterafter it was announced that scholarships aimed solely to- ward minorities would be banned. This letter-writing campaign re- sulted in a postponement of the decision until a study by the Gen- eral Accounting Office on the ef- fects of such a move can be com- pleted. President Clinton has not yet issued a formal statement declar- ing his stance on the legality of minority scholarships, although according to the USSA presiden- tial voter guide Clinton is in favor of such a policy.
