PSGA
Coleen Tartaglia
Assistant Editor-in-Chief
Last Friday, PSGA introduced
two more advisors in addition to the cur-
rent one, a new Resolution and more
SUFAC seats were filled. (This week the
Resoultion was passed. See below.)
The two new advisors are
Assistant to the Chancellor for Equity and
Diversity, Chari one Westerhaus, and
Chief of the University of Parkside
Police, Robert Deane. Dean of Students,
Stephen McLaughlin, is the current advi-
sor and will also be next semester's advi-
sor.
A Resoultion is a suggestion
made to the student body (all the senators)
regarding anything that affects students on
campus. PSGA introduces it at a meeting,
discusses it at the next meeting, then
votes to pass or fail at the second or third
meeting.
President Corey Mandley intro-
duced the Resoultion this week.
It
said
that UW-P doesn't have students on UW-
P's Faculty Search and Screen
Committees (A S &S Committee hires
new professors, faculty, and administra-
tion personnel), and we need two students
admitted on all Faculty Search and Screen
Committees, one of which would be a
minority student. Other UW system
schools allows students to be on their
committees, and so should UW-P. It also
said that PSGA will pick the students who
will be on those Committees, [so the deci-
sion is not left up to the faculty and staff,
but to the students at UWPj.
At this week's PSGA meeting, .
the Resolution passed through PSGA. I
asked Corey when this would go into
effect. He said, "As soon as we get the
Fauclty Search & Screen Committee to
approve it." He said he would present it at
the next S&S Committee meeting. The
next S&S meeting is April 21 at 3,30 in
MOLN 0137. All students are welcome
to attend. When the S&S Committee
approves it, it will be placed in the
Wisconsin Parks ide Search and Screen
Committee For Faculty, Staff, and
Limited Appointment Handbook.
Lastly, SUFAC is the committee
that handles all segregated fees (fees we
pay with our tuition). Three SUFAC
members were voted in todayChris
Leipski, Luis Benevioglio, and Elise
Cochran.

for current graduates will be held on
May 17, 1998 at 2pm in the Sports and
Activity Center. Potential May and
August graduates are currently being
certi tied by the Student Records Office
and those graduates will receive a mail-

with
information and instructions
regarding the ceremony. Officials
expect about 450 students will be eligi-
ble for graduation. Because of the limit-
ed capacity of the Sports and Activity
Center, graduates are asked to limit the
number of guests. Graduates who were
eligible but unable to participate in the
December, 1997 commencement may
take part in the May, 1998 commence-

Caps and gowns for graduates
will
be
available in the Campus
Bookstore. A variety of sizes will
be
available so pre-ordering and fining are
not typically required. Graduation
announcements are also available in the
Campus Bookstore. The deadline for •
notifying the Chancellor's Office that a
graduate plans to take part in the com-

acquainted with some of the basic tenets of
Christianity. And because of my Biblical
education, a number of things which he had
maintained sounded suspicious at the very
least. One comment he had made which I
hold most suspect, is his challenge to the
authority of the Apostle Paul and the inspi-
ration of the Pauline Epistles. The minister
had asserted that Paul added his own opin-
ion on matters of homosexuality in the
first
chapter of Romans. The suggestion of Paul
inserting his own opinion, I think, is a posi-
tion highly dangerous for any Christian to
maintain. The reason being, how can the
Christian reasonably distinguish between
which New Testament passage is inspired
by God and which is inspired by man?
Certainly it can be noted that each person
differs in their aspects of discernment. The
minister's reply to this was,
"Let
your con.
science
be
the judge." Now to me, this is
an odd position to maintain because I
understand the philosophy of human con-
science and it is a tricky matter.
Firstly, a person's conscience may
indicate what is right or what is wrong, but
it does not follow that a person will abide
by it. Secondly, a person' conscience is
absolutely private, so there is no way to
make certain whether and individual will
reveal what their conscience truly  indicates;
and in an attempt to find this truth only
leads back to the integrity of the person
involved, which in this case, is already
under scrutiny. Thirdly, the Heterosexual's
conscience may tell him that homosexuality
activity is wrong, whereas the homosexu-
al's conscience may tell him that homosex-
ual activity is right. If this is the case, then
the conscience certainly seems to be condi-
tioned by many factors. Such factors can
be a person's cultural background, a per-
son's upbringing, or even a person's moral
training.
In any case, the Christian who
believes that an individual's conscience
should judge the validity of certain scrip-
tures, presupposes that people will have the
integrity to conform to the laws of their
conscience. Second,
if
the conscience is
conditioned by the environment, then it
would not serve as a tool to assess objec-
tively what is right or what is wrong, but
rather it would be a tool which may mis-
lead the operator subjectively into self-
deception. And most importantly to the
Christian, it should be noted that a
Christian's conscience is to be refined by
the use of scripture, and not the scripture
that is to be refmed by the use of a
Christian's conscience. Ifnot taken
seri-
ously, this minister's view can grant indi-
viduals unlimited power to extract from the
scriptures what they wish, and to exclude
scriptures which do not confirm to their
preconceived notions. The notion that Paul
inserted his personal opinion about homo-
sexual relations is untenable for Christians.
For if so, then one could easily maintain
that Matthew inserted his own opinion on
whether the Sermon on the Mount really
occurred. Maybe Mark inserted his own
opinions about particular parables given by
Jesus. Perhaps John inserted his own opin-
ion about Christ's divinity or even his res-
urrection for that matter. Ultimately, to
Bible believing Christians, this view conve-
niently delimits God's authority in the New
Testament and consequently detracts from
the Christian's reliance upon God and His
Word.
