The Ranger Growl
The cost of books sold in our bookstore is absolutely ridiculous.
I feel like I'm giving the school a 15-percent tip after paying my $2000
tuition bill. On average I've spent about $400 each semester. When I sell
my books back at the end of the semester, I feel even more raped. I get
next to nothing back, especially when there is a new edition of my book
coming out next term. Many colleges have student-run bookstores and use
their profits to benefit the school community. If that is the case here then
I'd like to know where all this money is going. Until then I've found a
great new place to shop - it's called www.half.com.
Sincerely,
Fet up with Over-Paying for Books
This is a complaint that is probably going to be dismissed simply
because it is from a male, but I really have a problem with the Women's
Center. Does that mean I'm not allowed to go there? It looks so uninviting.
The thing is, I consider myself a feminist, even though I am a male. Plus
I like women. But I feel like I'm not welcome there. Is it a place where
women go so that they will not be bothered by guys trying to hit on them?
Or is it a place only for women, with a "no males allowed" policy? I've
always thought sexism was a horrible thing in society; now I know how it
feels.

Ice Cream Draws a Crowd
Students, faculty, staff, and guests milled around Main Place
during the ice cream social on Wednesday, January 21. The atrium
was filled with conversation as participants disposed of 48 gallons
of ice cream and a bevy of toppings. According to Amber Engel of
Student Activities, the ice cream social has been a tradition at UWParkside
since 1987 or earlier, with more than 25,000 persons served.
The ice cream social is funded by the student segregated fee.
Kenosha Businessmen
Donate Art to UW-Parkside
The stained glass piece that now stands in the sunny southwest
corner of Main Place used to decorate the lobby of the original
American State Bank in Kenosha. Bank incorporators Joseph Madrigano,
Sr. and Ralph Tenuta, along with A1 Aiello, A1 Di Simone, and
bank architect Frank Wilson, offered and facilitated the donation to
UW-Parkside. Delivery and installation were completed and funded
by Public Relations fundraising efforts. Facilities Management built
the metal framework that suspends the stained glass artwork, which
depicts a bald eagle in a field of stars and stripes. The piece measures
about five feet wide by ten feet high.
Phi Eta Sigma
Academic accomplishment is rewarded at UW-Parkside. Students
who achieve a GPA of 3.5 or better in either semester of their
first year of study may be invited to join Phi Eta Sigma, our campuswide
academic honor society. Membership in this national organization
is widely acknowledged by employers as a sign of academic success,
and chapter members are eligible for additional scholarships and
awards. Many students find the chapter to be an excellent way to meet
students from other disciplines. Asa student-run society, students can
also acquire leadership experience as well as help promote academic
achievement on campus. For more information, see the society web
site at http://shiva.uwp.edu/pes/.
Art Club Amazing Art Raffle

UW-Parkside offers new RideShare Program..
Make getting to campus easier, save on gas money, help reduce
parking congestion, and more!
By Russell Harris ,
Have you or anyone that you know ever got tired of paying for gas, putting wear and tear on your car, or needed a way to get to the UW-Parkside
campus when your car is in the repair shop? Maybe you are one of the many people who care about air quality and would like to do something to help
improve it. Well, UW-Parkside has an idea that is free to register for and far less costly than pumping up your car with gas, which seems to be more expensive
by the day. If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then the RideShare Program might be for you!
The RideShare Program is a carpooling service for members of the UW-Parkside community. First of all, carpooling does not require you to have
a car. "Riders Only" share the cost of the driver's expenses. In addition, you can choose to just drive. You can carpool solely when your schedule permits
you to. This service links people who live within a reasonable driving distance of one another.
Visit the RideShare web site at http://oldweb.uwp.edu/admin/vc.admin/ride.share/ in order to register. In addition, you can go to http.//oldweb.uwp.
edu/admin/vc.admin/ride.share/about_us.html for more information on this service. This web site has been designed with students security in mind and
no personal information is ever used, including your UW-Parkside e-mail address. You must have a UW-Parkside e-mail account in order to access the
RideShare web site, though. Potential carpoolers will only see your RideShare username, which is something that you create when registering.
Last of all, the RideShare Program does require that you be dependable, on time, and that you are considerate of your fellow travelers. Try the
service for a month or so to see if you like it.
There is also another inexpensive option for you to travel to campus. UPASS is a semester long bus pass for the Racine Belle Urban System that when
used with your UW-Parkside student ID will allow you an unlimited amount of free rides on the bus. It is paid for as part of your tuition and fees. You
may be asking, "How do I get my UPASS?" It's easy! At the beginning of the semester, go to the Information Center in the Student Center. Show your
valid student ID or your current class schedule when you visit the center. You can use your UPASS immediately, but you must renew your UPASS each
semester and be taking at least one course for credit per semester at UW-Parkside. You can use your UPASS to travel for any purpose to any destination
on the Belle Urban System.
Students who drive their own cars can save hundreds of dollars in reduced gas costs, maintenance fees, and wear and tear on their cars. It will also
lessen the hassles and stress involved in driving and in finding a parking space here on campus. It is a great option for students to consider and to take
advantage of.
Do you know about the
Co-Curricular Transcript?
Are you really involved here at UW-Parkside? Do you attend so many meetings and participate in so many activities; you can't keep track of them
all the time? Well, the Co-Curricular Transcript is your opportunity to create a personalized record of these activities. Similar to a Registrar's academic
transcript, this resource lists all of your 'extra" curricular activities during your time here at UW-Parkside. Participation in various organizations, leadership
positions, community service, honors/awards and other educational development activities can all be included.
The Student Activities office maintains the Co-Curricular Transcript. This transcript enables you to chart your developmental growth through
college experiences, validate your co-curricular activities, complement your academic transcript, document and chart career path experiences, support
scholarship and award applications.
Through involvement in co-curricular experiences, you gain transferable skills that can be applied to many areas outside of the college setting.
As a verifiable college document, the Co-Curricular Transcript can be used to support your search for summer employment, internships, graduate school,
or a job after you graduate. Creating your Co-Curricular Transcript should be an on-going process during your years at UW-Parkside If you begin your
Co-Curncular Transcript your first semester at UW-Parkside it will provide a more complete record of your involvement and development as a college
student.
Cheryl Langel, graduate and past President of the UW-Parkside Student Alliance, said she started a Co-Curricular Transcript to "keep track of
someday6" e" ^ ^ ^ ^ l° ** ^ ^ d°ne a"d she hoped il ',wi11 be imPressive to people who will hopefully hire me
When asked why he decided to use a co-curricular transcript, student Julian Thomas said it was "because I noticed my campus and professional
involvement had grown and thought it would be imperative, in marketing myself, to have accurate accounts as to when I participated in various events."
. . . . s®asy t°^rt a Co-cumcular Transcript! Stop by the Student Activities Office, Union 209, for a form. Complete this form and submit it at the
Activities Office Whenever you have information to update or add, complete another form in the Student Activities Office. It is recommended that you
ao this at the end of each semester, so your Co-Curricular Transcript is always current.
If you have questions, contact the Student Activities office at 595-2278 or stop by Union 209.

Remembering Katharine Jensen
By Henry Gaskins and Bill Turner
On Wednesday, November 12, a tree was dedicated to Katharine Emily Jensen,
who unexpectedly died at the age of 22 in a tragic car accident on October 9.
A group of approximately 60 students, faculty, family, and friends assembled
to dedicate a pagoda dogwood tree to Katharine. The tree is #46 on the 25th
Anniversary Nature Trail Self-Guided Walk. Dr.. Wendy Leeds-Hurwitz, professor
of communications, organized the memorial on behalf of the communication department,
at the request of the students. Donations were given by about two-dozen
members of the campus community to cover the cost of the tree and its maintenance.
Katharine was remembered at the ceremony through stories. Chancellor
Jack Keating described how she organized a donation of T-shirts to the FEMA workers
after the events of September 11,2001, which he only learned about after she did
it, when he was thanked for the efforts of his campus. Mary Waid, lecturer in communication,
spoke on behalf of all her professors about Katharine's work on a grant
project with her last year. The project involved teaching conflict resolution skills to
children, and Katharine was praised for her ability to work with them. Three Resident
Advisors (RA), Chris Semenas, Myron Ulb, and Erica Gavin described their
memories of Katharine as an RA and Residence Hall Director. All of the speakers
stressed her generous nature and the considerable time she spent helping other students.
They remembered her with poignant and emotional anecdotes, citing their
personal experiences and loving memories. Her parents expressed their appreciation
for UW-Parkside's dedication of the memorial tree. Her father announced that
another tree will be planted in her memory at the FEMA facility, in recognition of
her T-shirt project.
This particular tree was chosen by Leeds-Hurwitz and Cathy Miner, a communications
major who closely worked with Katharine, in part because of its cental
location on campus a (near the outdoor classroom), and in part because of its unusual
characteristics (it will flower in Spring and produce fruit in Summer). Chancellor
Keating pointed out that its shape, with branches reaching in many directions, appropriately
reflects Katharine's many interests. Katharine's pastor pointed out that
the way th e tree's buds reach up toward the sky represents her uplifting spirit and
optimistic viewpoint in life.
A poem by Marco Morrison, communications major, and former PSGA
president, was written in her honor for the occasion, and read aloud. He has given
permission for the poem to be reprinted with this article.
Life
What is life
If you have not
learned to live?
To live is to care
and to devote yourself
to the greater need not of yourself
but of the world.
What is life
if you cannot open your
heart to love?
In life we gain respect
from others by being ourselves
and doing the things we know
in our hearts are right.
Not many people learn to live
but those who truly live life to the fullest,
will live in our hearts and in our spirits,
long after their physical presence has gone.
What is life?
Life is you and me,
making a difference in everything
that we do and that we touch.
To live is to learn from mistakes and
to pick up the torch when great ones
before us could not complete their journey.
To live is to be free
of the pressures of the outside world and
focus on what really matters in life.
Life is about people.
It is about growing up in the way that we
think, act, and treat each other.
Life is about what you do while you are here.

The Male Abortion
By: Rosalyn Hill
Most often when people think of abortion, two issues are at hand: the woman's rights and the innocent's life. The "male abortion is rarely thought of or
discussed. Most people do not even consider it. A survey of 100 UW-Parkside students shows that only five percent know what the male abortion is. This is something
to think about. When a woman brings a life into the world it is not her responsibility alone, so the issue at hand is, "What do we do with these baby-aborting
fathers?" The male abortion is better defined in my work, "The Death of Deams "
The Death of Dreams
My mother couldn't explain why or how, she didn't even know who. When he raped her, he left no sign of his identity, but with a seed of his violence, they
created me!
Now that I am in school, I ask her day and night, "Why can't I get rid of his scar hanging over my head?" The kids always ask, "Where is he?" and I never
can answer because when an innocent is aborted, it is never given a right to speak! Momma is constantly woiking, studying, praying, crying, and trying to explain
why there is never enough! Never enough love in a single-parent home.
Never-ending questions of, "What did I do wrong?" Never enough books, counseling sessions, kind words, gifts to make me forget he is not here and realize
I am ALONE! Alone, why? Because momma birthed me into life, and daddy escaped leaving me with a Death of Dreams when he aborted me.
Let us all remember to act responsibly. This is a mother and a father responsibility. Both men and women need to act responsibly, and take responsibility tor

Unixer/ity Sport/
Kung Fu Concepts
By Peng Her
About five years ago, a friend of mine held black belts in Karate, Tae
Kwon Do, and Aikido. She has won first place in many tournaments, but
was beaten and raped by one perpetrator. This event questioned her skill
level and how the martial arts were taught.
This is why I'm teaching. I don't agree with how martial arts are
being taught today. Many situations can be avoided with the proper knowledge.
A large number of instructors today are only focused on recruiting
students for profit. And after their recruitment effort, many of them have
assistant instructors teach the class.
My biggest concern is that many students I've met, who have black
belts, don't have what it takes to be entitled to it. They have taken various
types of martial arts since childhood and they still don't have what it
takes to protect themselves. This is due to the lack of one-on-one with the
instructor. These instructors stand in front of a fairly large class, punching
in the air, and watching everyone imitate the motions. If you're a student in
the back row, you can't see the instructor nor, can he or she see you.
Martial arts, at their most potent form revolve from basic punching
and kicking. There are no fancy kicks or twirling moves in the air. Because
these moves, even after the fanciness, result back to using a basic kick and
punch to attack. I designed a class where all formalities are cut away, leaving
only the most basic and most effective moves. All long and telegraphic
movements are thrown away, simply because they cause too much work and
take too much time.
In real life situations, your opponent is constantly fighting back.
This is why I'm skeptical about many martial art demonstrators. These
demonstrations, where the instructors are going through motions throwing
their students around and knocking them down effortlessly, cause controversy.
In a fight, both you and your opponent have one common interest,
and that is to take the other person down without harming yourself. If two
people were to really fight, no one is going to give their opponent his or her
arm to be thrown around. It just doesn't happen!
Williams earns permanent
AD post at UW-Parkside
After serving as acting athletic director at UW-Parkside for three
years, David Williams has been hired as athletic director. Williams was
hired after the university conducted a national search for an athletic director.
"We did a national search, advertising in the NCAA News and
locally," explained William Murin, Faculty Athletic Representative of UWParkside.
"The position generated a pool of two dozen plus candidates of
which two were interviewed."
A search committee met with Chancellor Jack Keating to discuss
its findings. After several internal conversations, Williams was offered the
job.
"I would like to thank Chancellor Jack Keating, the search committee,
the coaching staff, and the university community for having faith in me
to continue in this position," said Williams. "The University of Wisconsin-
Parkside's administration continues to be committed to having a fist class
athletic program. We have an outstanding coaching staff led by veterans
Jim Kock, Rick Kilps, Mike DeWitt, and Lucian Rosa. I draw on these four
coaches knowledge every day. Structurally, the athletic department is on
par with other NCAA Division II universities. What I am most proud of is
the performance of our student-athletes in the classroom. Student-athletes
at UW-P understand the commitment to academics that our coaches expect
and it is reflected in the team grade point averages."
"I am fortunate that Lenny Klaver, Linda Draft, and Wayne Dannehl
(all former UW-P athletic directors) are readily accessible. I hope to build
on what they started. The direction they have given the athletic department
over the years and the guidance they continue to give me is invaluable."
Williams is a graduate of Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois,
with a degree in education. The Prospect Heights, Illinois native earned a
Masters Degree in Educational Administration from North Dakota State
University. Williams served as an assistant men's basketball coach at
NDSU and later was hired as the top assistant men's basketball coach at
UW-Parkside under Jeff Rutter. In addition, Williams was the head men's
golf coach at UW-Parkside prior to accepting the acting athletic director
position in January of 2001.
Williams is the National Association of Collegiate Directors of
Athletics third vice president. He also serves on the NCAA Division U
men's basketball regional advisory committee and the NCAA degree completion
committee. He serves the community as a member of the Kenosha
Rotary West and as a board member for Junior Achievement.

THE
ILWAUKEE BREWERS
Q4 WINTER TOUR
The Milwaukee Brewers
Visit UW-Parkside
Approximately 200 Brewers fans filled the UW-Parkside Student Union
to see some of their favorite Milwaukee Brewers players and the team's Manager,
Ned Yost, on January 23. The Milwaukee Brewers travel from town to town in
Wisconsin during winter to promote their team on what is called "The Milwaukee
Brewers Winter Tour."
The players who were in attendance to sign autographs included: Scott
Podsednik, Bill Hall, Chris Capuano, Wayne Franklin, Jim Gantner, and Gorman
Thomas. Ned Yost talked about the strong minor league players that the
Brewer's have in their organization and the amount of success that the young
talent is having in the minor leagues. He hopes that the youthful talent can
develop over the next few years so that the Milwaukee Brewers can improve on
their season record. His goal for the upcoming 2004 season was for the team to
finish above .500. The Milwaukee Brewers will have a different look this season
after they traded their super-star player Richie Sexson to the Houston Astros
for six talented players.
The event also included a raffle that benefited local youth programs.
The main attraction in the raffle was an autographed Paul Molitor bobble head
doll. Paul Molitor was recently inducted into The Major League Hall of Fame.
Everyone who attended the event left with a smile on their face, and some sort
of souvenir.

Self-Titled Demo
By George "DRU" Drury
ni Difranco
Educated Guess
By George "DRU" Drury
The first release from this Wisconsin born musician is a demo On her new album due out January 20, Ani Difranco takes hei
recorded at The Cave Studio in Oshkosh. The demo contains four acoustic career as a solo artist one step further. She pushes the indie side of herself
tracks that showcase Krohn's instrumental and vocal abilities. The style of into new territory, reaffirming her message to the world at large that she is
music, whether you choose to call it "emo" or acoustic rock, bears strong a woman to be reckoned with. On Educated Guess, Difranco took on the
similarities to the early Dashboard Confessional recording The Drowning task of recording an album by herself. She eschewed the use of a back-up
E.P. The first track on Krohn's album, "Enough of You," is an old "emo" band to instead take the role on for herself, playing all the instruments and
stalwart, the love song. The shining moment on this track, however, is when providing herself with background vocals. The newest role tor her on this
his lead vocals harmonize with his background vocals that come in during album was that of being both recording engineer and producer. Another feathe
second verse. The track "Blacksheep" begins as an anthem for individu- ture of the album that is all Difranco are the liner notes. The small booklet
ality, but the sentiment that rings through clearer than his acoustic guitar is contains Difranco's original artwork and three previously unreleased poems
that of his faith. In this song, Krohn places his very strong Christian beliefs by the singer. All of these things together make Educated Guess, a truly
on the table so that there are no questions about the meaning of any of his one-woman show.
lyrics. This blatant honesty that places him into the "emo" crown also makes
it easier for the listeners to find themselves in the song. "Post Platonic" is
a straightforward rock song with a guitar riff reminiscent of the Goo Goo
Dolls about moving a relationship past the friendship stage and onto shaky
ground. The final song on the demo could perhaps be the strongest in terms
of instrumentation. On 'Til Be With You," Krohn accompanies his acoustic
guitar with a driving piano track, wrapping up the demo with a message to
the listener that they aren't alone. Overall, the demo is a strong start for an
artist with immense potential. If you are a fan of acoustic artists or Christian
artists, go to www.ioshuakrohn.com for information about Krohn, potential
shows, and to hear the tracks from his demo.
Desert Island Album
What is a Desert Island Album?
On her new album, unlike those of several of her contemporaries,
Difranco avoids the trappings of a conventional pop sound and stays true
to her "folk punk" roots. She maintains her role as spokeswoman for feminism,
providing inspiration to women everywhere to remain strong in the
face of today's ever-changing political landscape and urges men to call
themselves feminists also. Politics, love, and lessons learned are also topics
of choice throughout the album.
Difranco's guitar sound is more on this album than any in the past,
and her unique picking style feels most appropriately placed center-stage on
these songs. Her style of shifting between screaming, moaning, and singing
her brilliant lyrics adds a level of intensity to already combustible subjects.
The most powerful tracks on the album aren't songs at all, but instead, they
are spoken word renditions of her lyrics. Educated Guess offers an appropriate
voice for a new beginning in an already legendary career.
It is the albums that you would risk your life saving in a fire. They are albums that never get tiresome, even after that 78th listen. They are the albums
that you have to have if you were ever stranded on a desert island. Of course you would also need some sort of listening device.
Bright Eyes:
Lifted or The Story is in the Soil, Keep your Ear to the Ground (label: Saddle Creek)
This is the fourth studio album by indie-rock heroes Bright Eyes, fronted by the twenty something Nebraska genius, Conner Oberst. Bright Eyes
is only one of the bands Oberst has created; he also leads the more outspoken, socioeconomic band Desaparecidos. Oberst has been putting his poetry
into music since he was thirteen years old. Now in his twenties, he has built a very sturdy underground fan base. Conner Oberst has been tagged as being
the next generation s Bob Dylan. He definitely has his critics, like Dylan. Some people are of the opinion that the lyrics are amateurish and that Oberst's
trembling voice can be annoying. Through all the criticisms, there is no doubting the honesty of emotions that Oberst's lyrics and melodies evoke.
This is probably Bright Eyes's biggest and most publicized album to date. Hardcore Bright Eyes fans will not be disappointed. Oberst, once again,
comments on failed relationships, depression, soul searching, and the sad state of American society and government. The power of this album is in how
the lyrics are maniacally spewed from Oberst so honestly. In one of Oberst's more spiritual songs he desperately questions, "If I sold my soul for a bag of
gold, to you, which one of us would be the foolish one?" In the final track, he comments on commercialism and society in the quote, "Well, I guess that
we all fit into your slogan on that tast food marquee: Red-blooded, White-skinned, oh, and the Blues. I got the Blues. That's Me!" The songs also have
the catchiness of a Beatles tune. Of course, some songs are better than others; regardless, some of the standout tracks are- "Lover I Don't Have to Love,"
"Bowl of Oranges," "Nothing Gets Crossed Out," "Waste of Paint," and "Let's Not Sh*t Ourselves." This album has everything to make it interesting
for a very long time, truthful lyrics sung over intricate yet catchy melodies. Every artist's objective is to convey a kind of universal human truth through
his or her medium and Oberst creates art with this album.

Matt Gephardt, the son of a leading presidential candidate, US
Congressman Dick Gephardt (D-Missouri), paid a visit to UW-Parkside in
December with State Representative Jim Kreuser (D-Kenosha).
Rep. Kreuser is a UW-Parkside alumni and former president of
the PSGA. He is currently the Democratic Leader in the Wisconsin State
Assembly.
Gephardt and Kreuser met with students and faculty to discuss the
importance of education and health care issues. Matt Gephardt was diagnosed
with cancer as a child. His father Dick and mother Jane spent a lot of
time in the hospital with him during his treatment and helped set up a Ronald
McDonald House in St. Louis for the families of sick children.
Matt Gephardt shared the story of how he overcame that challenge
and pursued his dream of starting his own business. After attending public
schools, Matt Gephardt earned his undergraduate degree at Duke University
and an MBA from Northwestern University.
Matt succeeded in starting his own business during the 1990s. That
business, like so many other small businesses, became a victim of the high
tech bust. Today he works for a software firm in Atlanta, where he lives with
his wife Tricia.
Rep. Kreuser has endorsed Dick Gephardt for President, saying the
Congressman's support from labor union families and his realistic healthcare
plan make him the best choice.

HEALTH & BODY
By Emily Rasbornik
I am so sick of the so called "health world." One day coffee is
bad for you the next day it's good. I actually just heard that chocolate is
really good for you and that vitamins can cause cancer. Do they want us
fat and sick so we keep coming back for more bad advice? I think being
healthy is very important, so I asked my doctor about what she thought
about the "health world" and her stance seemed to be that magazines and
newspapers will put anything in them to get you to read them, even if it
isn't the truth. Well not in this paper! Frankly, I am sick of them changing
their minds all the time.
Each week I will research and find a good reliable health tip.
Something we can rely on. My doctor gave me some great resources to
look at that will help answer some of my questions. In each issue I will
share my source and my new heath find.
FIND # 1
Spring Break is fast approaching and I know we all want to look
good. Here is some motivation to get healthy.
Physical fitness is to the human body what fine tuning is to an
engine. It enables us to perform up to our potential.
Patience is essential. Don't try to do too much too soon and
don't quit before you have a chance to experience the rewards of
improved fitness. You can't regain in a few days or weeks what you
have lost in years of sedentary living, but you can get it back if you
persevere. And the prize is worth the price."
The key to weight control is keeping energy intake (food) and
energy output (physical activity) in balance.

Jason Meekma asked, "Does
Yellow Dye # 5 really shrink your
weenie?"
I am assuming this question came
from the long age myth that drinking
Mountain Dew will shrink your
testis, decrease your sperm count, or
cause your weenie to grow smaller.
The controversial ingredient is called
Yellow Dye No. 5, also known as
tartrazine; it is an FD&C (approved
for use in food, drugs, and cosmetics)
coloring dye commonly used to give
various foods a bright lemon color.
It has long been deemed safe by the Food and Drug Administration, and
has been in use since 1916. So I am sure we would have heard something
more than roomers about shrinking penises by now. So Jason If
you drink a lot of Dew, you will notice one related perfectly harmless
side effect, quite a bit of yellow liquid will flow out of your penis.

By Henry Gaskins
As we continue to write Exposing
the Sexes, I figure it will be best to
describe the purpose of the column at the
beginning of every semester, since inevitably
there will be new students reading
the newspaper. I will explain up front
that my thoughts on what this column is
about may differ from Emily's thoughts,
but that is the foundation for the column
itself - that we each describe a subject
from our own perspective.
The art of exposing is based on
the fact that many people believe men
and women think differently. So I will
describe what I think, feel, and have
experienced on a subject, and I believe
Emily will do something similar. You
may deduce from that: I am taking a
male college-student perspective and
she is taking a female college-student
perspective; therefore, we write about
common issues and incidents that occur
within relationships. In the past, we
have written about our perspectives on
impressing, jealousy, and the "game"
itself, among other issues. This semester
we have a good line-up of topics to
discuss as well.
I am not attempting to represent
the male sex in this column. It's not like
a battle between the sexes. It's more like
a case study: one random guy (who happens
to work for the newspaper) and one
random girl (who also happens to woik
for the newspaper) each share what they
think on a subject. The column itself
is not meant to advise. In fact, one of
the rules I give myself when writing
this column is that I do not give advice.
Although I consider myself to be a perfectly
respectable guy with good general
reasoning behind everything I do or
think, I don't consider myself a person
to give advice when it comes to relationships
- reiterating that I can only write
what I think, feel, and have experienced.
I do, however, hope to invoke at least a
couple provoking thoughts throughout
the existence of this column.
Since we write about relationships,
it is only right to also include our
current status on the dating scene, or
whatever you want to call it. I'm single.
I've been in many types of relationships:
long-term, short-night, long-distance,
living-with, dating friends, dating exes,
dating co-workers, etc. I don't mean to
present these as credentials or anything
like that, because I don't pride myself
in not sustaining a relationship. Instead
I write these as a way of noting that I
have experienced different interactions
with members of the fairer sex. After
all, if I had great credentials, I'm sure
I wouldn't have been single for the past
six (or so) months.
That isn't 1a say I haven't
(By "talked," I
mean spoken to girls who I might be interested
in dating and who also might
be interested in dating me.) I've talked
to plenty of girls in the past six months.
My most recent conclusion on why I
have not maintained a relationship is
that I do not believe the girls I have
been talking to actually know what they
want in a guy or relationship. That is, of
course, my own, personal opinion. But
my own attraction to them has not necessarily
been about what they want out
of a relationship, although I have noted
this in every case. My main attraction
to a girl is more of what they want out
of life. I think there are few people who
really grab their own life and try to take
direction. My current thought is that I
may be searching for the impossible:
a person who takes direction, appreciates
me for who I am (human, if nothing
else), and who coincides perfectly
into my own life. Until then, or about
the age 28,1 will remain single.
art of Exposing
ByEmily Rasbornik
Well, we are back for another
semester. Life seems to be moving
faster and faster. I am a senior, but I
think I will milk this college experience
another year. It's a scary thought to be
done with school. My freshman year
I was planning on finishing college in
four years, having a great job right out
of school, and thinking about marrying
my wonderful boyfriend who is now an
ex. Wow, how life flies by. I finally
seem to be "growing up," but I feel like
my relationships are not. They are being
stunted by confusion and hopelessness.
I cannot get away from the phrase
"You can't have your cake and eat it
too." I hear it all the time and it never
really made sense to me. So I thought I
would try and expose these cake eaters,
by making sense of this phrase.
I guess right now, it seems
like so many people do not want to be
in real relationships. They don't want
to settle down or be honest with how
they feel, like they have other priorities
in life that need to be attended to and
they don't really know how to balance
it all out. I have met plenty of girls and
guys who can't seem to make decisions
: the opposite sex. There are a lot
of different people in this world and
everyone seems to fall in all sorts of
categories but I have narrowed it down
to two main groups.
Type one is people who want
to date around, see what others have to
offer and not be committed to anyone.
But I found something weird in this
group, they still have one person they
are in contact with when they aren't
playing the field. They don't want to
be alone so they string someone along
to make them feel good. This one person
is usually in group two. Group two
people want to settle down, are fine
with commitment, and want to balance
everything in life with someone else.
Group two are people think that relationships
are very important and see
great value in them. Usually group two
people get into a relationship wanting,
to give it their all. They confess their
love and then get toyed with from the
people in group one. They want all the
benefits of the relationship, but when a
problem arises, they try to act like they
are confused and don't want to settle
down. They don't want to deal with the
common problems that come with relationships
or maybe they don't know
how to. They have no clear boundaries,
and they end up taking group two
for a ride. The weird thing is, group
two gets in the car with no seat belt
and allows themselves to be taken for
a ride. Maybe they don't want to be
taken for a ride, but it's like they can't
control it, they try to comfort their own
emotions by doing things that will end
up hurting them, because they claim to
have no control. They base decisions
off emotions. Its like they are so scared
to see that the other person doesn't like
them.
I have learned that you get
what you tolerate. Group one can't be
honest, knowing they really don't like a
person, and then they lead group two on
because they like the attention. Group
1 tends to say things like "Oh sorry, I
don't know if I like you, I am so confused."
Well, I happen to think that is a
line of bull. They know dam well what
is going on, they just want the other
to be around when they want them
and then leave when they're through
with them. Hence die phrase: "You
can't have your cake and eat it too."
Instead of using emotions as a tool to
help make logical decisions, Group two
does filings based off emotions and reenforces
this phrase by not removing
themselves form the situation.
I don't think people realize they
may fall into group one or two, it's just
a natural pattern that they go through,
and I don't think anyone really tries to
identify what's going on. If they did I
am sure the unhealthy relationship circles
in their life would slowly stop. I
also need to throw in a group three, the
miscellaneous people, and the ones who
are in happy relationships, dealing with
the common relationship problems, taking
one day at a time and loving one
another. I am sure this is where we all
hope to be someday.
Life flies by very quickly, mine
seems to be in 6th gear going 99mph,
but my friends and family kick it down
to 5th by helping me remember about
the real loving relationships that I have
with them. No one should be scared to
see the truth of what they're relationship
really is about. This is what Exposing
the Sexes is.
