WHITE According to www.cdc. gov.com, between 20 percent and 25 percent of college students nationwide encountered either rape or attempted rape. Advocates Supporting Parkside and Educating for Nonviolence (A.S.P.E.N), is ajoint service' that offers support and trains advocates. The Surviving Sexual Assault Advocacy Program (SSAAP) was started in 1991 by the Dean of Students Office in collaboration with Parkside Women's Center, Student Health, and the University Police. This program's name was later changed to ASPEN, adding. domestic violence and stalking to the issues for which advocates are trained. An advocate can be any individual trained to plead the case of another, help with problems, listen, or provide support during the recovery process. Advocates also help by being the mediator between police and victims. Advocates are trained to provide education on different types of assaults. Sexual assault can be unwanted sexual contact, stalking, domestic violence, or dating- relationship violence. Marlene Schlecht, a UW-Parkside officer for 23 years said, "This kind of work is not always easy. I got involved with (ASPEN) while investigating a sexual assault case and thought...1 need help." "Police officers try to stick to the facts and remain unbiased," said Schlecht. She also said that sometimes the questioning process leads to the officers appearing as though they do not believe the victim's story. Spirit Night Cancelled BY MATIDAS D GAUGER & NICK HONECK Following a successful day of events during Discover Asia, the scheduled Ranger Pride Exhibition event was supposed to showcase the students' spirit. If the cheer "We've got spirit. Yes we do. We got spirit. How about you?" was posed as a question to UW-Parkside students, it's not clear what the answer would be. On Saturday, October 15, Fall Fest's Discover Asia prngram presented the Ranger Pride Exhibition at the SAC Center. "Ranger Spirit Night is [the Athletic Department's] contribution to Fall Fest," Assistant Director of Student Activities Stephanie Sirovatka- Marshall stated in an e-mail. Students might remember the event as being previously called the Family Fun Weekend, which was merged with Fall Fest for the first time this year. The Ranger Pride Exhibition, which mirrors events at colleges allover the United States, was made a part of Discover Asia week in order to launch the 2005 UW-Parkside Basketball tearns. A similar event the night before at UW- Milwaukee drew 1,500 students, as reponed by The UWM Post. There was only one problem with UW·Parkside's event, almost no one showed up. "1 want to say ... 10 to 15 people [were present]," said student Carly Surber. "When I arrived. people were already on their way out," Flyers advertising Fall Fest's Discover Asia program were posted throughout the UW-Parkside campus. Albeit in small print, the Ranger Spirit Exhibition was included on all of the signs. "It's absolutely pathetic." said Surber, "I think it could have been advertised better. I don't really think it was advertised separate from Discover Asia." Athletic Director Dave Williams said the event was included on the Discover Asia flyers and not separately advertised because of cost. The Athletic Department's decision not to fund separate advertising was prompted by the belief that the event would be poorly attended. The selection will be made after an interview with the current co-editors of the paper, and the position will be filled when our staff 'approves a selected candidate. . . The next editor-in-chief will undergo training during the spnng semester, . shadowing the current co-editors, learning about various parts of the newspaper, SUFAC, student organization policies. meeting student activities staff and administration officials, and ultimately hiring the 2006-2007 key staff of The Ranger News. • Without a doubt it has been the most rewarding experience in my entire life. I have grown more through the editor-in-chief position than any other experience I have had - including my academic ~ursuits. Even my time the Army, a huge growing experience for me, cannot match the personality growth I have gone through In the past . two years here at The Ranger News. I have always been a little goofy, but serious about any subject matter that was important to me. Two years ago and for my entire life before that, I was very shy around people I didn't know well. I went around trying not to disagree with anyone and adapting to other people's viewpoints to avoid confrontations. Looking back, I only wanted people to like me, so I would strive to make their day. It was the lifestyle of a sucker. "The editor-in-chief of the newspaper cannot be a sucker or aim to please everyone. While doing what he or she believes fa be right and bein-g as fair as possible is required, there is no way to please everyone while in this position. If the staff of the newspaper is doing its job, and the newspaper intends to provide relevant information for the community whether it is controversial or not, then there will automatically be people who don't like the editor-in-chief. I feel confident in saying that the same concept applies to the head of any organization; if a group disagrees with a resolution passed by the student government senatbrs, they might hold it against the student government president. 'There-are some typical lines I've gotten used to saying since I took on the responsibility of editor-in-chief, such as, "I cannot guarantee that we'll have a reporter covering every story there is," and "We do not accept stories about an organization written by the organization." Every now and then I say things like, "No we are not looking for advice columnists," and there is always, "I'm sony if you thought we were too critical on a recent news story," My personal favorite is, "Thank you for complimenting the paper - I'll pass the word on to our staff." This position requires stamina - physical, mental, and emotiona1. When I began realizing that pleasing everyone was not practical (which didn't mean I had to be impolite), I focused on the more important issue of creating and coordinating a solid, relevant community newspaper. Like any position at the newspaper, it's an experience that can change a person's life. 1 highly encourage anyone who is interested to apply. Henry-D.
