Modifications made to PSGA constitution Rixey Herron of the Ranger News Staff One of the proposed changes is to increase the hours for food services. According to Mandley, Marriott Food Services and UW-Parkside have been planning to decrease the time food ser- vices are available. Mandley feels that the increase in the student population demands more, not fewer hours for food services. Another proposed constitutional alteration is to increase student represen- tation in the PSG A with the addition of several senators for a total of 40. Fifteen of these will be from organizations at UWP, such as the Parks ide radio station, the Parkside Activities Board, the Ranger newspaper, the Black Student Union, The Native American Club, Latinos Unidos, and the Gay and Lesbian Organization (a complete list of organizations can be found in the student government constitution under article V., Legislative Branch, Section II., Membership). Twenty-four senators are elected at-large and the fortieth member is tbe chairperson of the Faculty Senate. Student discussions on the changes were held September 21 from 10 a.m to noon, I to 2 p.m., and 3 to 5 p.m.; September 22 from 10 a.m. to noon, and 2 to 5 p.m.; September 23 from 10 a.m. to noon and 3 to 5 p.m. The meetings were held in the student government office across from the coffee shop. Parkside Student Government Association (PSGA) senators have lahored since June 1998, modifying the PSG A constitution and by-laws. Voting on the modified constitution will coincide with the election for senate officers. A referendum will be added to the ballot asking students if they are for or against the changed constitution. For student review, copies of the new consti- tution will be placed in voting areas. Jf passed, the new constitution will become effective a week and a half from its rati- fication. Corey Mandley, President of the PSGA since March 1998, would like to see the new Eonstitution ratified. Mandley stated, "It opens the hori- zon for something that has never been done in our student government before, and that is not just increasing diversity but increasing the productivity of student government." Mandley also said, "[The new con- stitution] sets priorities and basically outlines what exactly our duties are as student government officers, what we need to do, and the consequences of being an elected member if we don't." Tbis program consists of 14 short, non-credit courses on week- day evenings. These classes are designed to help students build fuo and koowledge into their busy, every- day schedules. There is no long term commitment or grades. The courses offered will ioclude: Don't Weight Around - Be Healthy Now, Solids and Stripes Billiards Class and Conversational Spanish. The University recently reached an agree- ment with Racine's Belle Urban System to issue bus passes for all stu- dents. The passes allow students to ride any Racine bus at aoy time for free. "This agreement is the result of four and a half years of negotiations," said UW-Parkside Director of University Police and Public Safety Robert Deane. He said pass holders may occa- sionally be asked for identification to assure that they are UW-Parkside stu- dents. The passes are available at the University's Information Desk in the Parkside Union.
