WESTBROOK westbOO2@uwp.edu Parkside Student Government Association president Tyson Fettes announced during the PSGA meeting, at noon, on Feb. 9, that he had vetoed the resolution passed last week to create separate positions of Multicultural Director and LGBTQA Director in the PSGA senate. The resolution, sponsored by senator Carly Anne Surber, stated that it be resolved that "we support the acknowledgement and promotion of Multicultural Issues, Women's Issues, and LGBTQ issues by establishing the separate positions of Multicultural Director and LGBTQA Director." LGBTQA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, and Allies) people "are part of a community of similar interests, not as a unified and transmitted culture, race, or ethnicity, although those individuals may experience a crossing-over according to their background and heritage," stated the resolution. Fettes said during the meeting tbat he has instructed the diversity director. Anita Robertson, to change the name of the Diversity Committee and its bylaws to include LGBTQ issues by Feb. 23. Robertson's next meeting of the Diversity Committee will take place on Feb. 22 in the PSG A office at 5 p.m. Fettes had previously said that be felt that the Diversity Committee could handle the responsibility of also covering LGBTQ issues and that he did not want to create positions for the sake of doing so. According to Fettes, he has been under pressure to cut executive stipend spending within PSG A and that adding a new director position would conflict with that (In the meeting on Jan. 19, David Wilson and Patricia Jensen co-sponsored the "Excessive Executive Stipends Act" to cut executive spending on stipends). Surber had voiced the idea in a revious PSGA senate meeting that the position could be either temporarily or permanently unpaid. Spending continued to he an issue in the meeting, as Louis Kirleis. director the Segregated University Fees Allocation Committee, announced that there would be additional cuts made at I :30 p.m. that day because segregated fees were still too high and needed to be decreased further. This company was most recently on campus last week on Feb. 6. Vector Marketing is the-sales division of the Alcas Corporation, who are the manufacturers of CutCQ Cutlery. Among the ways that Vector Marketing recruits people is by having flyers across campus that advertise the starting pay to be $15 per hour. The only prerequisite for the job is that the applicant must be at least 18 years old. However, the flyers are very vague as to what the job entails, as it is not explained what it is that a person has to do to earu that Sf S. The $15 is only a base pay for each appointment setup. An employee is not paid for the three-day training seminar, the gasoline for traveling to appointments (as an employee has to use his or her own car to get to appointments). or the time for calling peopleto set up appointments. Vector Marketing has a history of deceiving potential employees and unethical business practices. An August 2004 article written for The Statesman Journal states that Vector Marketing "has outraged students nationwide with its recruiting and employment-related practices." The same article had an interview with Emily Puterbaugh, a fanner employee for Vector Marketing in Tacoma. Washington. who explained that whenever someone called the office inquiring about the job, she "was given a script to read, which provided liule information about the job. emphasizing that it didn't involve door-to-door sales or telemarketing. If people insisted on more details. she said sbe was instructed to reply that she didn't know any further information and urge callers to schedule an interview." I'IB& I. -~ .............. I was actually kind of glad this week when I noticed that someone had written to point out some mistakes we had made in last week's issue. I don't mean to imply that I'm glad that we made some mistakes; though, we certainly did make some; 1 was just glad that someone had actually written something to us at all. It seems like every week ['!I' worried about something during the layout of the paper. Whether it be a comic or a story, there is invariably something that 1 think is going to cause a lot of problems when the issue comes out on Tuesday afternoon. SOl I sit or and think about whatever I perceive the problem to bet until about Thursday at 3 or 4 p.m .. when the Issue has been out for about 2 days and no one has said a word. I guess that's the point where 1 becnme a little disappointed, because it leads me to one of two scenarios: either no one read the paper that week, or no one really cared about anything in it. There have been a couple of weeks in which I think the former situation is true. If \ see that our stands are about as full as they were when we put the papers on them, then 1 can guess that people simply aren't picking it up. However, it most instances, I attribute the lack of feedback to the latter of the IWO aforementioned scenarios. Getting people interested is the hard part. More than once people have told me that we could get more readers if we'd do this or that, if we had more film reviews. for instance, or that we could get more writers if we just let everyone write whatever they want, like editorials or CD reviews. I've found that the difficulty is trying to get people interested and committed to The Ranger News while, at the same time, preserving our identity as a NEWSpaper. The Ranger News is the student newspaper of UW- Parkside, a means of informing the campus of what's going on in this small community, but we also consider ourselves an educational entity, as well, trying to teach journalism in a university that offers no official program in it. I don't mean to say that editorials and other aspects of such a publication are nat important. However, we are a newspaper, and I believe that first and foremost, we should focus on news. That could be a little idealistic, and I guess if everyone quits and I'm standing in the office all by myself, I'll realize that I made a mistake, but for now, I think this is the right direction. -Andrew C.
