Unfortunately, there wasn't a major that met most of the department requirements and prerequisites for entrance into these programs. Dr. Bryan Lewis, Dr. Carmel Ruffolo, and I came up with the idea of creating a new major to meet this need. Since UW-Parkside already offered the vast majority of the courses needed for such a major, it was just a matter of putti~g the courses together in a cohesive manner to meet the requirements of most of the graduate and professional programs." Another reason AHS was created was due to student demand, explained Dr. Penny Lyter, chair of the UW-Parkslde Health, physical Education and Athletics Department as quoted on the UW-Parkside website, Lyter said "During advising, students would express an Starting this semester Applied Health Science (AHSj is now being offered as a major at the University of WlSconsin-Parkside. AHS is In excellent choice as a major forthose who wish to work in theheathcare industty. AHS wa~ created in part due to the region, state, and nationwide needfortrained health care pr?fessionals. This specific ~cl~n~e degree is designed for indIVIduals who are preparing foradmission to graduate and Pursuing professional programs, andfor students wanting to earn Stewards, hopefully with other students, will make the campus greener. The Student Environmental Stewards will have other responsibilities as well. They will have to work with student organizations to promote environmental awareness on campus and participate in fundraisers to pay for Dew solar power panels in campus buildings. Additionally, they will work with a member of AmericCorps 'VISTA to create an environmental education movement to include the construction of new environmental centers in Racine and Kenosha. The Studenr Environmental Stewards will meet with lead advisor Tom Schnaubelt to guarantee progress is being made, along with Cathy Folker and John Skalbeck, who are co-advisors, along with the Chancellor's Task Force on Environment Stewardship. The candidates who are chosen for the positions will make designs that will display the university's environmental efforts to date. UW-Parkside bas a match of $100,000 environmental grant from WE Energies and a challenge donation to match up for $10,000. In exchange for this, the Student Environmental Stewards will have excellent opportunities to learn a significant number of leadership and organizational skills. Tbe pay is $7.50 an hour and requires 60 to 70 hours of work per semester. Stewards can earn up to $1,000 in hourly compensation for1he 2007-08 academic year for the duration of the current academic calendar. Service learning is a method of teaching that includes community work in the curriculum, which provides students with experience in their field of study while providing a valuable service to the community. The UW-Parkside is currently the headquarters of Wisconsin Campus Connection (WCC), which is extends throughout the nation as a student service organization with chapters at 36 colleges "The Volunteer Program is a resource for students, facilitating, and/or partnering with them on volunteer events or activities," - Cosey Jones the director of UW-Porkside's Volunteer and Experiential Program. and universities throughout Wisconsin. Chancellor John Keating serves as a co-chair for WCe. Casey Jones is the director ofUW-Parkside's Volunteer and Experiential Program. Jones said numerous schools are incorporating service learning as a vital part of the education of students and career preparation. "Students have made career choices, gained employment, learned new skills, and increased their personal confideoce, all while they gained the satisfaction of helping others. The Volunteer Program is a resource for students, facilitating, and/or partnering with them on volunteer events or activities," said Jones. Due to the current Volunteer and Experiential Program, hundreds of students work to understand and prevent domestic violence. learn business management, assist in therapy, improve literacy, and study several social issues. Service learning helps individuals develop their critical thinking skills, improves workforce readiness, and prepares students to become responsible leaders. Now, everything is up and working again. I never thought J would be so excited to be able to print. Last week Friday, Anne- Marie Durso, the Chief Information Officer of the university came to speak with me about the issues we had been having. You can read more about this in the article "The Ranger News computer update" on page 3. J really appreciate that she came to clear things up and give me a broader perspective on the new computers. On to other things ... [ would like to take this opportunity to note another strange occurrence on our campus. This is the random movement of OUf news stands. 1'01 not sure if this is being done hy janitorial staff, students or (heaven forbid) faculty, but [ find it very aggravating. It is not only an annoyance, though. Our stands are placed in specific places so as to be visually eye-catching and to make our papers readily available. In a few instances, I have found them behind walls or shoved into comers where I couldn't find them for several minutes, even when I was looking for them. Please respect our news stands. and if you need to move them for some reason, such as cleaning, please return them to their proper places. 1 hope someone will come into our news office (Wyllie D J 39C) next Friday to talk to me about moving our news stands!
