The survey is designed to help the administration improve the undergraduate students' experience. The idea is to understand the difference between how the college experience is viewed from freshmen and seniors perspectives. As freshmen, students may enter college with preconceived notions on what their experience will be like. As seniors, students have engaged in activities that make them more knowledgeable about the workings of the university atmosphere. The expectations and specifics change. This survey will gauge how far apart the classes are in their perception of student engagement and how Parkside compares to other schools of the same type across the nation. Parkside last took part in the NSSE in 2006. Out of five target categories, freshmen rated Parkside lower than seniors in four. the exception being Supportive Campus Environment. In all five categories, both freshmen and seniors rated Parkside lower than the national average. It took some creati ve thinking on our part, hUI it looks good. . Worldfest was this past week, and while we had some scheduling issues that prevented most of our reporters from attending many of the events, our photographers came through with their cameras and captured Worldfest in photos. You can find the photo caption on pages 6 and 7 in this issue. Hopefully next year there will be less conflict, and we can get some written coverage of Worldfest, Next week is spring break, which means we won't be putting out an issue au the 18th. While allowing people to be unique individuals, it is necessary to check in about disturbing behaviors to maintain community safety. By sharing information consistently and looking for behavioral patterns, the campus community can determine how to react to a wide variety of situations. Odd, bizarre, frightening, alarming and criminal behavior should be reported using a formal process to record the infonnation, as well as a procedure to govern how situations should be handled. To educate the campus community about the warning signs related to violent behavior, information will be provided through a variety of communication channels, including printed information, web-based resources, e-mail updates and " interpersonal gatherings. Everyone should be aware of how and where to report strange behaviors and how and when to refer someone to counseling. Among those who are running for office is Thorn Bartek, who is running for the position of Alderman in the 3'" District of Kenosha, who graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in 2007 with a degree in Political Science. Even though the election on the first of Apr. is equally important as the upcoming presidential election, Bartek believes it hasn't received the same amount of attention because, "this has to deal with us getting involved as citizens in government, in the issues that are important to us. I think also too that we can do a better job as a government entity for the city in just advertising the fact that there's elections coming up, bur unless you read the paper everyday, unless you follow through with the issues everyday it would be easy for it to fall off the radar ... there was a huge tum out at the primary election actually because Hilary Clinton and Barak Obama and the republicans had their candidates on the ballot so a lot of people carne out for that. but now iI'S falling through,". Bartek is running against a long time incumbent for the position of Alderman in the 3'" District of Kenosha. Bartek believes that the education he received at Parkside has prepared him for this challenge. '1 think the instructors in the classes that I've taken here have really helped. Dr. Anne Gumack teaches a class called Midterm Elections which as a requirement for the course we had to get involved with a campaign and follow through with the campaign and volunteering with that and helping the organization out, I think that helped me understand bow campaigns work." Additionally, a number of hooks he read for the class helped him understand how campaigns came into existence as well as some of the challenges that candidates faced while challenging incumbents. There have been other classes that Bartek took which taught him political philosophies and political ideals. "which really helped me prepare for this." It throws off our meeting schedule; it throws off the deadline schedule. It can even throw off our circulation numbers. if the break is longer than a week. We decided to not put out an issue over spring break, so as a result some of the information in this issue is, perhaps, a bit outdated. If we had put out an issue over break, there probably wouldn't have been much in the way of articles. It's kind of a trade-off. As you may know, our next issue comes out on April Fool's Day. We are attempting to collect articles in order to run a humorl satire section in that issue, and you all are more than welcome to submit funny stories, illustrations, etc. We ask that you keep the pieces appropriate--think along the lines of what you would find in a PG-13 movie. No excessive nudity, no excessive swearing. etc. In order to be considered for publication, your piece must include your first and last name and your email. If a submission has some questionable content, it is up to our executive board to decide whether or not to publish it. Submissions will be due no later than Friday, March 28th by 3pm. However, it is important to recognize that in times of crisis, people will respond in ways we may not have considered." With this in mind. the Commission made certain suggestions to help while a crisis is going on at any of the campuses. The Commission suggested that all 26 campuses should decide as part of their crisis planning what mechanisms will be used for information sharing and crisis updates during an actual crisis. They also suggested that the constituents should be informed in advance of where to find the crisis information. The Commission also suggested that the UW System should require annual reviews of campus crisis plans and continuity of operations plans and' revision. Plans from every campus should be filed with the System office for the purpose of ensuring existence and completeness. All campuses should train personnel involved in the crisis plan about their roles and responsibilities in the plan. All campuses should test the plan at least once annually. The Commission felt that all campuses should have University Police properly trained, equipped and armed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so that they may respond to emergencies including active killers. As of right now that decision is up to the Chancellors at every University. Also, not all Universities have University Police; three have campus security instead of University Police. The University of Wisconsin-Parks ide currently has University Police armed to national standards, meaning that they can carry and operate a handgun and long gun. Not all campuses have this; The University of Wisconsin - LaCrosse has sworn law enforcement officers (meeting all standards, training and certifications of the State of Wisconsin for Police) but are only armed with handguns. The schools that don't allow their police to carry long guns say that is due to their Chancellor's opposition "We've got issues" yare solely ~ble for il$ cdllorial policy _nd ecmenr, to them. The Commission said in its report that it understands that the cost of police officers is greater than security officers and that training is expensive, but the Commission said that it believes the financial investment is minimal to the benefit it will bring. The Commission stated that closing a campus is just unreasonable because of the size of the Universities. The only way of closing a campus is to cancel classes and all campus events/programs. There is no way "locking down" all buildings in a campus could do more harm then good in certain situations. The ability to completely ecure a campus would be a significant undertaking requiring ignificant police support for most campuses are connected to their broader community, because of the city streets that run throughout campus. Update on UWp·TV ROBERT ROSATI robertrosati@hobnall,com This semester many people have been wondering if UWP-TV was still in existence because there have been no new episodes uploaded to their YouTube account. This semester UWP-TV has shifted their f~us from producing new episode to by purchasing equipment and recruiting new members to their organization. The Chief Executive Officer of UWP- TV, Henry Gaskins, said "We looked at some of what we did last semester, and we thought it was a pretty good base. But now we're focusing on getting more students who want to do this sort ofthing and having the equipment necessary for them to usc." On Mon. March 10. UWP- TV had their request for $2,250 approved by the Student Organization Council (SOC). A portion of the money was spent on a Canon GL2 digital video camera, a tripod, a camera case, and lights among other items. Additionally, UWP-TV is spending money from their private account to purchase other equipment, uch as wireless handheld microphones. "Whil the new equipment is great for UWP-TV, recruitment has been more challenging," said Gaskins. "Students are busy, and working with a media organization on campus is 'certainly a time commitment ." UWP-TV is in the midst of planning a puhlicity drive that will take place in April. with their goals being to recruit students who are interested in ommunication, digital arts, marketing. as well as student leadership. The riots killed 22 people; included in that total were a baby boy that was burned to death in a garage and a paramilitary officer. China's government is blaming the riots and uprisings on a small minority of Tibetians, and that the violence in no way reflects the entire region's feelings of its rule. The Chinese government claims that it is being undermined and disestablished before the Olympic games can be held there. The Communist leaders of China have gone on to say that the Dalai Lama planned allacks with "the aid of violent Uighur ~eparatist groups seeking an independent East Turkestan for their largely Muslim people in the northwestern Xinjiang region of China." There are also claims that he is "scheming to take the Beijing Olympics hostage [0 force the Chinese Government to make concessions to Tibetan independence." I feel like I've learned so much in just a few weeks, and I know in the next two years I will only learn more. This was given 'to us by PSGA, and I had to cut it down to just the past few years of breakdowns. The original document was much larger, however, we just didn't have space for everything. Voting will take place near Java Coast in Molinaro Hall. If elected, Wilson would like to get rid of the j OO-signature requirement that candidates need-in order to be on the ballot because be feels that if someone wants to run, they should be able. Additionally, he plans on downsizing the bureaucracy and giving power to students and members of the Senate. David wants to cut the United States Sports Academy (USSA) in an attempt to focus on what be feels PSGA does hest: organizing and lobbying for students on the university, local, and state level. If elected, he plans on keeping segregated fees low, make sure that the latest happenings in United Council are publicized, and improve PSGA from a public relations standpoint. Furthermore, Wilson wants to "organize an efficient and coherent body of the PSGA bylaws, to regulate and define their actions of PSGA in a physically manifested form that will ensure continuity of the rule of law and give guidance for further generations to follow." Wilson feels that the expansion of Parkside should not go unchallenged. He also feels that PSGA sbould advertise the upcoming election to create more interest in it. Ruffalo Theodore Ruffalo is running for PSGA President because he feels that "this position represents opportunities that are rare and short-lived; allowing me to make the most out of my time as a student exploring a dynamic that reaches past lectures and the classroom. Those opportunities include: making a difference in politics, helping shape the course of my (student) community for tbe better, and being proactive by helping to create lasting, fulfilling changes that will benefit Parkside students after I'm gone." Ruffalo believes that he is a qualified 10 be President of PSG A because be cares about what is happening on campus. Additionally, he speaks out and takes actions to solve problems and resolve issues and problems in PSGA. Ruffalo feels that leadership roles he had in the U.S. Marine Corps have prepared him to run student government, if he is elected. The goals he has for PSGA if he is elected President are the following: to create a streamlined student government of proactive individuals and user- friendly rules and regulations, make PSGA more appealing for a greater diversity of students, and demonstrate that you don't have to be a politician to "enjoy and enrich Parkside with political actions." Jensen Patricia Jensen is running to promote campus unity, as she believes that no organization feels valued or respected and feels that PSG A should set the tone for relations with the university "We've got issues" and organizations. Jensen has a wealth of experiences that have prepared her for being the head of PSGA: one year as the President of Sacred Circle, for two years she was the secretary of the same organization, three years as a member of Parkside Adult Student Alliance (PASA), one year as secretary of the Parkside Environmental Club, served as a Senator in PSGA for two years, one year as a member of Student University Fees Allocation Committee (SUFAC), a former member of The Ranger News, a member of student government in the Kenosha Gateway Technical College, as well as being a former co-editor of the newspaper for the Kenosha Gateway Technical College. If Jensen is elected, she has some immediate goals: change the location PSGA Senators hold their meetings, advertise PSGA, enforce what is in the PSGA constitution, make every aspect of student government more accessible because students pay fees that go towards PSGA, as such they have a right to know what's going on, conduct a student survey regarding what 'they want from PSGA, and invite the entire student body to United Council as all students pay for Parkside to be a member of it. Patricia bas several long term plans for PSGA, if she is the victor in the race for President for PSGA: she wants to have a meeting once a week with every single organization on campus because all organizations have value to them, and if they focus their energy on an issue there is no telling what could be possible. Jensen wants to improve the communication between the faculty and students of Parkside and communication between university administration and those currently taking classes at Parkside. Lasley George Lasley was unavailable for comment. Vice President and Senate Billy McCollum and Antonio Roudez are both running for Vice- President of PSGA. The Vice- President of PSGA has enormous responsibilities: he or she must monitor and inform the student Senate on the financial condition of PSGA, give an itemized budget and make bi-weekly reports, be a voting member of the Executive Board, serve at least four office hours aweek, and has to be present at all General Assemblies. As of this writing there are six people running for student Senate. However, an extension was granted until Man Apr. 13 at II a.m., at which time all applications had to be turned into the PSGA office for those who wished to be on the election ballot for this position. All members of the Senate must be present during all General Assemblies, and must serve at least two office hours per week in the PSGA office. Members of the Senate have the power to do the following: pass legislation in the interest of the student body with majority vote; override Presidential vetoes with a two-thirds vote, call referendum or special elections a two-thirds vote, impeach or censure any member of the Senate or any executive officer; or remove a Justice for not fulfilling their duties) or engaging in immoral dishonest activities with a two- thirds approval vote, approve Constitutional amendments with a three-fourths majority vote, approve the agenda for General Assemblies, amend the agenda with a majority vote of all those in attendance, and approve appointments to the Supreme Court with a two-thirds vote and committee director positions with a majority vote. Additionally, any member ofthe Senate has the right to speak on issues in the General Assembly and will be granted a reasonable amount of time to speak. In 1945, Mr. Kennedy was liberated by the Russian army, and immediately returned home to Hungary. Campus technology survey ROBERT ROSATI robertrosati@hotmail.com A campus technology evaluation survey was sent out to students with the results of survey beingused towards UW-Parkside Improving the technology services offered Oncampus. The Campus Technology Services Prosram Review Committee cond~cted the survey. The identities of those replying the survey are anonymous. The first question asks the person filling out the survey to checkeach type of computer he Orshe uses for homework. or to cOrtununicate with instructors. The third question asks how often have you received help with a technology problem on campus. The choices . for a response are n~ve.r, once, twice, or more then two times. The following question seeks information about bow easy was it to get help with a technology problem. There are five different choices for a response: very easy, easy, not very easy. difficult, and very difficult. The fifth question wants to seek an answer pertaining to where the individual filling out the survey got help with their technological problem. There are seven choices for a response: the help desk, computer lah assistant, faculty member, resident advisor, web tutorial, a friend, and if none of the previous options are correct there is a space available to type in what the correct answer is. The sixth question lists the following technologies: personal laptop computer, campus laptop, a computer in a classroom, a smart board, a wireless network, audio visual equipment, and video editing equipment. The question wants to know where you were when using each of the aforementioned technologies if a problem occurred . The next couple of questions pertain to e-mail. They ask the person filling out the survey how often they use his or her- Parks ide e-mail account, to rate the service of UW-Parkside e-mail, and how UW-Parkside's e-mail service could be improved. The tenth question asks if the person filling out the survey if he or she has had a problem with a computer virus on campus. The next question wants to know how you save your computer files. The twelfth question wants to know if you have ever had some problem saving a file. The next two questions ''WeJve got issues" ask the following: have you ever been to a computer lab on campus on found zero computers available and how many times has a problem with a classroom computer equipment stalled a class. The fifteenth question asks the person filling out the survey to rate the technology in the campus computer labs. The next four questions want to know what you like the best and least about using technology services on campus, what one thing would you like change regarding the use of technology on campus, and what other concerns do you have about technology services on campus. Interview with a Professor Featuring Dr. Dana Oswald MOLLIE EGAN tree_fingers99@yahoo.com Dr. Dana Oswald has been teaching at the University of Wisconsin - Parkside since 2005, but she began teaching when she was in graduate school while she was a teacher's assistant at Ohio State University. Before she came to UW-Parkside, for a year she taught at a smaIl university in Ohio called Whitenburg. Oswald teaches medieval literature, theory, gender classes and history of the English language. Oswald came to UW-Parkside because she had gotten an offer at UW-Parkside and at a school in Alaska, so she decided to stay around here and teach. She was also attracted to UW-Parkside because of the small. school size; none of her classes are overly huge. Oswald also likes that many of her studenrs at UW-Parkside are non-traditional students; those students aren't here because it's the next step that they should. do after high school, but they are at school because they want to be there. Oswald always knew she wanted to be a teacher because she comes from a family of teachers. She lovesnothing better thengetting up in front of a class that is really responding to what she is teaching and having a great class discussion. Oswald got her Bachelor's from the University of North Colorado. got her Master's and her Doctorate at Ohio State University. Her Ph.D. is in English with a specialty in medieval literature. One of Oswald's favorite classes she has ever gotten to teach is violence in medieval literature. In the literature that they were reading for that class the students actually kept a body count for how many times someone lost a limb from their body. Another favorite class that Oswald has taught is a senior seminar of medieval romance literature. Oswald's most recent favorite class that she has taught is literary analysis. Oswald is involved with Women's and Gender studies on campus. She is on their committee and helps makes discussions on what sorts of lectures they arc going to have and things like that. Oswald's advice tothestudents is to talk to your professors. She said that when things start to go wrong. is when a student doesn't go and talk to their professor. The evaluation cornmitee met twice --Feb. 8 and Feb, 15, 2008--to go over the proposals. Some ofthe services the committee was looking for from companies included providing supplies in a timely manner as well as suppJying sufficient quantities of all required and recommended books and course materials. They also wanted companies to provide an enhanced selection of current trade, academic, and technical literature. A major factor was JOKIRST dlerdraphoenixesgmail.com The University of Wisconsin-Parkside, III compliance with a state law, recently looked into hiring a new provider for the campus bookstore. The final decision was to hire Valadis Resources as the new provider. Valadis resources had to create a proposal and send it to a review committeee. The committee consisted of Rick Haskey, the Contract Administrator; Rhonda Kimmel, the company's drive to maintain competitive prices compared to other retail outlets in the area. Companies that wished to participate in the evaluation were required to send a typed. securely bound proposal prepared on standard 8.5 inch by j I inch paper. The proposal had to include a cover page, introduction, the company's information, response to technical requirements, cost proposal, and required forms -- an affidavit and designation of confidential and proprietary information. Follett Higher Education Group and Validis Resources were the two proposals for the committee to evaluate. The proposals were rated on a number scale, with 1000 points being a perfect score. Valadis Resources scored 908 points while Follett Higher Education Group (the former bookstore provider) scoring only 742 points. Rick Haskey, a member of the committee, said that Valadis Resources was a better choice than Follett Higher Education Group because "Valadis met the majority of criteria and fulfilled the expectations of the committee. The goal is to create a bookstore service program that meets the needs of a diverse student body, faculty, and staff." Presenting next year's Student President: Ted Ruffalo MOLLIE EGAN tree_fingers99@yahoo.com The next President of Parkside Student Government Association (pSG A) is Theodore Ruffalo, as Tony DuBose's term is up at tbe end of tbe current semester. Currently, Ted is ajunior at the University of Wisconsin- -Parkside, majoring in Political Science with a concentration in Jaw. Ruffalo intends to serve for the "maximum duration, with maximum effectiveness". Prior to and during the elections, Ruffalo got his name out to the student body by posting flyers all around the sebool, writing reminders to vote for him on the sidewalks in chalk, and speaking to student organizations on issues and concerns that are part of his platform. He wanted a personal approach with a strong visual element. As President of PSGA, Ruffalo intends to reinstate the Presidential Council. According to Ted, this would foster student organization interrelations, increase awareness, and open avenues of communication between organizations. Alex, passed away at the age of 20. Alex suffered from the eating disorder known as anorexia. which eventually caused her death. Alex was an extraordinary competitor gifted runner and with this in mind, DeVinny's other daughters came up with the idea to "do something to sort of sustain her interest and memory and the idea was to do a ('We~ve got issues" race." Alex was a freshman in high school when her athletic prowess on the track field was evident: she set a record at the Tremper CC (Cross Country) invite in the 4K (kilometers) with a time of 14:04. At the Rebel Invite/Parkside CC Course, a 4K track, she set a record with a time of 13:54. Alex DeVinny set another record, that same year. At the South Milwaukee Invite held at Grant Park, when her time was an incredible 14:16 in a 4K race. She also earned first place in the following events as a high school freshman: Cross country sectional. track and field SE (South East) conference 1600 and 3000M (meters). track and field regional 1600 and 3200M. as well as in a track and field section 1600 and 3200M race. Alex's domination in track and field events continuedduringherjunior year of high school. She won four events that year: the cross country sectional, track and field regional 1600 and 3200M. track and field sectional 3200M, as well as the track and field state meet 3200 M. Alex enjoyed competing in the Lighthonse Run. Alex won the women's 4-mile race in back- to-back years in 2000 and 200 I. In 2001 she set a" course record with a time of 22:39, which still stands to this day. and Alex was posthumously inducted into the Wisconsin Runners Hall of Fame at the race in 2005. As Bob mentioned last week, I was out of town the weekend of the 19th and 20th. I went on a "mini-vacation", and in case you were wondering, It was a good time. I went on a road trip, saw a few concerts, and had a great time with some friends I don't get to see often. Anyway, I think Ryan Ashton, Josh Diefenbach, Bob The Ranger News Rosati, Ruth, and anyone else who pitched in while I was gone did a wonderfui job, and I thank them for their time and effort. I appreciate everyone stepping up to help make suee the paper was able to be sent to the publisher on time, while at the same time keeping the standard I have set for the paper this semester. Not too long ago, we recieved a new-ish iMac for our designer, Ruth, to use. I was hoping it'd be up and running by this point so she would be able to use the latest software and all that jazz, but unfortunately there is still some work to be done. We're still in the process of getting everything set up the way we need it, and incorporating the computer into our network in the office. My hope is that Ruth will be able to use it at least once before this semester is over. If not, she will be back in fall to use the new iMac and work her magic on the articles, photos, images, and illustrations we collect each week for the paper. THINGS TO DO April 29, 20~ Along with the new computer comes new software for us. We recently upgraded our design software to Adobe Creative Suite 3. Previously, we had been using CS I for our layout. This, unfortunately, bas created some problems when we transfer our files over to our art manager at the publishing company. However, Holly (the art manager) has been patient and helped us through some extra steps to make sure the files all transfer correctly. To think that there are only two more issues left in this semester (not counting this one) is crazy. T still can't wrap my head around the fact that this semester has flown by. I must say, I've learned a lot this semester, and I'm sure I will only learn more (and develop the skills I already have) in the next two years. Yes, you read that right--I intend on sticking around as Editor-in-Chief until I graduate in 2010. I iook forward to working with so many new people, both within and outside of the Ranger News. The Parks ide Student Government Association (PSGA) has taken note of this, and is working with the Computer Science Club (CSC) to come up with some solutions to this problem. UW-System-wide budget nllialive. This proposal, called Advantage Wisconsin: Growing ~e Research Infrastructure 9 ibrary Component), sks-tbar million dollars be allocated to ~ UW-System Libraries for purposes of expanding the ~h infrastructures of all the -SYstem lihraries- including p Umversity of Wisconsin- arkside. These funds, should they be ~anted, will primarily be used t~ expand electronic resources ~ughout the libraries in the fe -SYstem. One important th:~re 111 this initiative is that Ibrary funds wouid provide these suggestions would be a detriment to all students and faculty at Parkside, both now and in the near future," states a press release written by Michael Riedlinger, the Public Relations Director for PSGA. According to the report compiled by the CSc. tbere are "relatively few access points, and several [or the access points] have , stability issues". The majority of the Communication Arts building does not have any wireless access, and several Computer Science classrooms also lack wireless Internet. The CSC feels that every classroom should have Internet access, so that students can "easily download a copy of their syllabi from D2L, check/submit assignments, and do research." In addition to· connectivity being sporadic, the UW-P wireless network is also very slow. "The campus is currently limiting traffic on the wireless network ... Traffic limiting causes the wireless network to be unusable", the CSC report explains. The classrooms on campus with hardwired Internet connections have a speed of IOMbps (megabits per second), whereas the Computer Science Department has a connection speed of IOOOMbps. "This creates a bottleneck for the wireless network as well, because the campus wired network is often slow during the day. This problem is also due to the current networking equipment's inability to satisfy the Current demand from students," according to the report. Most of the wireless access points on campus are far slower than what the current consumer market uses, at II Mbps. This is a problem because students have to sbare the available bandwidth. If UW-Parkside upgraded their hardware, the wireless network would be accessible in more places, move faster, and would be more reliable. How does the CSC suggest UW-Parkside resolve this issue? The report suggests replacing the current access points. "Most Parkside classrooms currently have an Ethernet drop, therefore it would be simple and inexpensive to buy consumer hardware for high-traffic rooms and areas ... I don't know where this year went , honestly. J started working at The Ranger News last semester as a copy editor, got bumped up to Executive Editor (to be trained to be Editor-in- Chief next schooi year), and by The Ranger News May 6, 2008 e time this semester started, I was Editor-in-Chief. It sounds cliche, I know, but it does seem like just yesterday that I walked into this office as a somewhat shy kid wanting to get involved on campus. Since then, I've really come out of my sbell. I've sharpened my skills at probiem solving and making decisions on tbe fly (for the times where I have iittle information to go off of). I'm better at speaking in front of a group, and speaking to people I don't know. I am better at asking for help, even though I still think I can do everytbing myself. And while I admit J have a temper, working here and dealing with some frustrating moments has actually helped me keep it in check better than I used to be able to. I'm more organized, and T try and stay on top of everything as best I can. I am more motivated to get work done, regardless of whether it's school work or newspaper work. I know there's still ways I can improve, though. r need to THINGS TO DO work on the way I conduct our staff meetings every week--I try to keep them lighthearted, but serious enough that everything gets accomplished. I think I can strike a better balance between the two, however. I'm sure our staff meetings could be more productive, and it's up to me to find a way to make them that way. The long hours on weekends (yes, I and several others do work on the weekends!) have been grueling at times, but I think they've paid off. [ am happy with the way the paper has improved this semester, and I look forward to seeing what next semester brings us. You may think "well, once school's over, she'll have a break". Not entirely true, as much as you and I both wish it were. We are moving to the Student Union at some point in the near future, so we have to pack up our office supplies in order for the move. I'm working on putting together a staff handbook, creating both documents from scratch and incorporating pieces from our older staff handbook. The constitution needs some revision as well. [' II be coming up with story ideas for our first fall issue and ideas to use for the rest of the fall semester. The Ranger News never really stops functioning, school or no school. The only time it actually stops is when peopie (either the staff or the students who read it) stop caring about it. I made this letter more about me than I intended, but I think that's okay. Self-reflection is a good thing, right? Next week's letter will be more about OUf staff, especially those who are graduating, than myself and what I've learned as Editor-in-Chief. Dr. Gibson is dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and serves as a professor in the Dept. of English, Folklore & Etbnomusicoiogy at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Ark. Gibson previous served in a variety of academic positions during her 22 years of service at Indiana University- Bloomington including associate vice chancellor in the Office of Multicultural Affairs. One of the candidates dropped out of the running on Apr. 30, The four finalists are Robert Felner, from the University of Louisville; TJ. Bryan of Fayetteville State University; Gloria J. Gibson from Arkansas State University; and Maurice Taylor of Morgan State University. Our current Chancellor isJohn (Jack) Keating, whowill be retiring in August John (Jack) Keating Jack KeaLing has been the Chancellor of UW-Parkside since1998, but not before taking on leadership roles at other universities: He was appointed TAYLOR founding Dean and Vice Provost of two University of Washington campuses (Tacoma and Bothel) in 1989, and in 1994 he was the first Provost at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. He remained at the University of Alaska until taking on the Chancellorship role at Uw-Parkside. He has his PhD. in Social Psychology from The Ohio State University, and focuses his research on human behavior both before and after emergencies or disasters. His biography on the UW-Parkside website explains that his most recent research studied "trauma experienced by emergency responders after major disasters." Most of this research was done in cooperation with the New York City Red Cross. He has also chaired an international meeting of high-rise evacuation experts in New York City to study lessons learned from the World Trade Center tragedy. As Chancellor at UW- Parks ide. Robert FeIner Robert FeIner is currently the Dean of the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Louisville, in Louisville, Kentucky, Previously, he served as co-chair of the University-Community Partnership Board at the University of Louisville. He has taught at.the, University of Rhode Island, the University of Illinois, Auburn University, and Yale University. He has his doctorate in Psychology, from the .University of Rochester. He met with the UW-Parkside community on Monday, May 5, and he answered a variety of questions. As a result, two committees were created: the Search-and- Screen committee and the Special Regents committee. The Search-and-Screen committee is largely composed of faculty, butalso includes academic staff, students (either picked by the school's student government or the President of the University of Wisconsin System), adlllinistrators, and community members. The chairperson of this Committee is a faculty member. The Special Regents committee 1S1l1ade up of "not less than three nornot more than fi ve Regents" , aCCOrding to the University of W1Sconsin-Parkside's website (UWp.edu), The President d . CSlgnates the chairperson for this committee. The Search-and- Screen committee's primary responsibility is to "conduct a nationwide search for a diverse Poolofoutstanding, wen-qualified candidates, and to select from that applicant pool nat fewer than five persons to be forwarded by the committee to the President and the Special Regent committee for further consideration. The process of finding a new Chancellor can take anywhere from 6 to 10 months from start to finish. Since the process is so lengthy, the Search-and-Screen committee broke it down into four phases. During the first phase, the committee searches all over the country for candidates, They begin by advertising the position and taking applications. As the applications come in, the committee members evaluate them and any other documents attached to the application. They check with the applicant's references, calling them. writing them. or meeting with them face to face. Once the committee narrows the pooJ down to 8 to 12 applicants. they conduct interviews. Those who "pass" the interview are added to a "short list" of suitable applicants. The "short list" contains no fewer than fi ve candidates. and they are. listed in no particular order. After the "short list" is completed, the second phase can begin. The President holds a meeting with the two committees GmSON would address the different needs of the diverse student body, he replied by saying that all groups within the University need to be supportive of each other, and to facilitate this, a central inclusive area would be created. T.J. Bryan Tuesday, May 6 brought TJ. Bryan to campus. Bryan is a professor of English language and literature and the former Chancellor of Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She has previously been a Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs for to learn about each of the "short list" candidates in the form of oral presentations, accompanied by each candidate's personnel file. And so begins another semester at the U ni veristy of Wisconsin-Parkside: the frantic search for a parking space, standing in long lines in the bookstore, scanning the classroom for familiar faces, exploring the new Student Union, and the seemingly endless amount of activities to check out during the first weeks of school. Student organizations have been gearing up for a new year as well, The Ranger News included. We've been doing some rearranging: we've cleaned up our office, which has given us a more efficient and useable space; we've renamed and reorganized some job titles; and we've had some staff members fill in the gaps left by those who graduated last semester. As 1 mentioned in May, Mollie Egan has stepped up and is now our Executive Editor and News Editor. Zak Smith is now our Marketing Director and will continue to be a photographer with us. Zak and Mollie, along with Ruth Briones (our Head The Ranger News Designer) and I make up The Ranger News executive board for this year. Another project for The Ranger News has been getting our website up and running so that everyone has access to our issues online. One step in this direction is the addition of "therangernews com" email addresses--you'U notice in the staff list that several of us have our names u@ tberangernews.com" for an email. The goal is to eventually get all staff members a "rangernews. com" email and switch the advertising email from a yahoo account to "therangemews com". The iast part of this project is getting a place secured for hosting the website. Once all the pieces are in place, you will be able to comment on articles, view both current and past issues, and see what's coming up in future issues. One "proactive" idea involves previewing events instead of just reporting on things after they've already happened. For example: the theatre department is doing five mainstage shows this year.
