BARBARA BARUTH
RANGER NEWS
The Computing Assistance Center, open Monday through
Friday from 8:00-4:30, is waiting to provide faculty, staff and
students with the assistance necessary to resolve computer and
network-related problems. The Center, located in CART 120,
acts primarily as a referral desk, channeling problems and
requests to the person best able to provide assistance. In some
cases, the CAC desk staff will be able to provide immediate help,
but in any case, the objective is to get a quick and satisfactory
response back to you. Staff from all areas of Information
Services are working together to ensure that the CAC really helps
with your mainframe, microcomputer, networking and software
needs. Stop by and see us, give us a call (x2444) or visit our

Alleged drug usage in housing
prompts drug
education program
LENAE D. HARRIS
COMM 250
real focus is to give an informa-
tive warning and prevent the stu-
dent from a future predicament
that might get them in a lot of
trouble and possibly mark their
record for life. The student is
informed of the zero tolerance of
drug misuse on the Parks ide cam-
pus, and that there would be a
problem if anyone gets caught
using drugs. If caught, the person
would be prosecuted to the fullest
extent of the law.
The program was instituted to
let the students  know that
the
police know what's going on in
Housing and if they get caught,
they will be prosecuted. Word
spreads  quickly  around  campus;
chances are if a student is
involved in misuse, he or she will
be exposed.
The good part about the
"Knock and Talk" Program is that
students are reporting on other
students, this is to say that there
are some responsible students
who want to do the right thing
and will not tolerate having their
environment com prom ised.
The University of Wisconsin-
Parkside will hold its third annual
Creative and Research Recognition Day
on April 25 from 10 a.m. to I p.m. in
Main Place.
The Recognition Day gives stu-
dents the opportunity to present their
projects to other students and faculty.
The students will be provided a 4foot
by 8 foot poster board to explain their
topic, their research questions and the
answers they have d iscovered, Some
special equipment will also be provided
such as computers, easels and tables
will be made available for displaying
their work.
"Recognition Day is a wonderful
opportunity for students to show off
their w.ork that they have been working
on all year," said Dr. Dale Wheeler of
the Chemistry Department who also
leads the project.
Recognition Day is available to all
students who have finished a directed
studies course in any department during
the past year.
Directed studies give the hands-on
Drug activity has been report-
ed in Housing. Most of the infor-
mation is being reported by other
students living in the dorms or
visitors to the dorms who do not
approve of it.
"We have instituted a pro-
gram that we hope will curtail the
activity. It's called the' Knock
and Talk' Program," says Police
Chief Robert Deane. The pro-
gram works by University Police
knocking on the doors of students
who might be involved in the
misuse. The Officers start by
telling the student that they are
suspected of being involved in
the misuse and then perm ission is
.asked to search their room. They
then sit down with the student to
talk about the drug use and th
repercussions of drug use and the
consequences of the use on cam-
pus.
University Police want the
students to know that the focus is
not to arrest/ ticket them. The
Mark Bernhardt, former UW-
Parkside physics major, showed
his project to Jack Elmore and
Jim Sheageology at last year's
Recognition Day.
experience that most classroom-orient-
ed courses lack. A directed study helps
to strengthen the student's resume and
it appeals to future employers.
These projects require a lot of
time and energy by the students. The
Research and Creative Activities Day is
a wonderful way of encouraging these
students and gives them the opportunity
to show fellow students and faculty
what they have done.
This year's Recognition Day will
include projects from the Chemistry,
Sociology, Art, Philosophy, Physics and
Biology Departments .•

My name is Bert Cattelino, a retired Kenosha auto assembly
plant worker, with a friendly reminder about a fast approaching
milestone for the University of Wisconsin- Parkside.
Monday, May 5, will mark exactly thirty years aeo that
Wisconsin Governor Warren P. Knowles signed into I~wSenate
Bill 38S which empowered Kenosha county to transfer 690 acresof
land for the proposed new UWP campus to the state of Wisconsin.
I would like to share some of my cherished memories withthe
students in general. On behalf of the United Auto Workersunion
Local 72, I was present in Madison for this historic signing. If this
particular bill had failed to pass in the lezislature the Parkside
<>
,
dream would never have gotten off the ground. My other fellow
umon brothers also on hand for this auspicious occasion were
Assemblyman George Molinaro, State Senator Joseph Lourigan,
and Jack Beni,
OUf
education Committee chairman.
After affixing his signature to Bill 38S in 1967, the governor
presented the pen he used
in
the ceremony to me. The pen anda
photograph of the gala occasion later were mounted on a special
plaque authorized by our union president Rudy Kuzel who in tum
had me present the plaque to UWP Chancellor Alan Guskin.
My role in assisting with the creation of UWP was to confront
a stubborn Republican floor leader, Assemblyman Paul Alphonsi,
who finally agreed to support our four year campus hopes. Inaddi-
non the tireless efforts of that terrific trio, namely Kenosha news-
paper reporter Harlan Draeger, businessman George Connolly, and
county board supervisor Peter Marshall more than paid off inhelp-
109to establish Parkside.

ing in the new residence hall
would be for you. There are
many benefits to living on cam-

offer students many conve-

by
having a setting
close to classes and university
facilities.
The benefits of living on
campus are plentiful. There are
no monthly utility. bills. The
long distance telephone calls
are inexpensive
with
no month-
ly service charge. Basic cable
will be offered in the TV

Residents will have access
to an in-hall computer lab and
also a computer network access

will also have a fitness center
with exercise bikes, treadmills
and an eight station universal.
For studying conveniences there
will be study rooms. The hall is
also located by nearby recre-

most attractive benefits will be
no parking hassles because the
hall will have its own parking
lot.
The rooms in the Ranger
Hall are designed to have two
students. The rooms will be
furnished with beds that can be
used as bunks, twin beds or
lofts. The rooms will also have
mattresses, desks, chairs and
dressers. Rooms will have dou-

floors. There are also some
rooms that will be academic
intensive which will allow some
students a quieter place to live
than the other rooms.
There are also many extras
by
living on campus. Steve
Wallner, assistant director of
residence life, said)
"It
can
increase a student's chance of
success in college."
He also mentioned, "It can
heighten a student's overall uni-
versity education and experi-
ence." Other extras would be
leadership opportunities such as
resident advisors (RA) or resi-
dence hall coordinators (RHC).
Students can also be part of the
Resident Hall Association
(RHA). The residence hall will
also make it easy to meet new
people and friends.

UW-Parkside gets cash
for Physical Education
Building
AL HEPPNER
SPORTS EDITOR
This battle has been fought with the state legislature for over
two years now and it's been a roller coaster ride.
However, in a surprise tum of events, the University of
Wisconsin-Parks ide may have cleared the final hill last week When
the State Building Commission approved funding for the new field
house.
The commission had wanted UW-Parkside to raise half of the
six million dollars required for the new facility, but settled on an
80-20 split. That left UW-Parkside with $1.2 million to raise from
, student fees and donations.
The new building will bring a large field house to allow UW-
Parks ide to host concerts, major sporting events, and graduations.
The field house would also provide a 200-meter indoor track, new
weight room, additional basketball and racquetball courts, and a
media room among other things.
Along with the new dorms and the new food court, the expan-
sion could help erase UW-Parkside's label as a "commuter school"
and establish them as a powerhouse in all NCAA Division II sports.
"I'll finally be able to work out without the side effects of frost-
bite," said John Nunn, freshman.
After an initial approval two years ago, the state legislature
then divided UW-Parkside's expansion program into two phases
while only approving the first phase. In effect, the decision took all
the air out of the expansion project.
Once again, Athletic Director Lenny Klaver came through in a
meeting with Gov. Tommy Thompson and there is renewed hope
that UW-Parkside can take strides towards becoming the place it
was originally intended to be: "the next Madison."

One way to do this is tovoice your opinion and vote on theissues that come before the Senate.Another way is to participate in oneof the various committees. As aside note committee people arealways needed and senatorial mem-bership is not required. The Justices examine the decisionsand actions of the student govern-ment to determine the constitution-ality of those decisions and actions. The Justices are required to attendthe Senatorial meetings on Fridayfrom 12 to Ipm. students, faculty and staff can help

[Parks ide] is a home to most of us...a
community," she said. This is where
many people spend the largest part
of their days.
She also said that when students
are experiencing grief, it becomes so
overwhelming that they do poorly on
exams, have trouble coping with life
and school, and miss or drop out of
classes. By forming this group for
the students of UWP, the problem
can be addressed before things go
too far downhill.
There are many referral sources
available through the group. The
Internet has hundreds of resources
which Carol Lee Saffioti-Hughes '

Parkside awarded $400,000 to assist
urban communities
by
Rebecca Vankervoorde
The University of Wisconsin-
Parksidewill receive a $400,000 grant
form the FederalDepartment of Housing
and Urban Development. Parkside will
be working to revitalize two targeted
urban areas. The Lincoln Neighborhood
in Kenoshaand the West Sixth Street
area in Racine were the areas chosen.
Both of thesecommunities exist in sub-
standardconditions, including poor
housing, anda high population of low-
income families with inadequateeduca-
tions and work skills.
The goals of this project areto
help residentsdevelop leadership skills,
increase home ownership, establish new
businesses, and to restore pride in their
community.
Esther Letven, assistant vice
chancellor for Extended Services and
Sociology ProfessorAnne Stathamwere
involved in writing the grant proposal,
they will serve asco-directors of thepro-
ject.
The three year project will ben-
efit the depressed neighborhoods aswell
as the university community, whose
SIU-
dents will receive real-life experiences
as
volunteer mentors, according to Letven.
"This is really good for our
SIU-
dents. This is an opportunity for stu-
dents educated at UW-Parkside to apply
their learning to the community in which
they live," Letven said. "We're trying
to bring the resourcesof the university
to
the needsof the community. This isnot
something the university is
doing
to the
community, but we're working
with
the
community."
Parkside was one of 25 colleges
I
and universities awarded grants. There
were 112 institutions that applied this
year.

built on the parking lot. The field house
will include four basketball courts inside
a six lane track.
The new facility is hoped to
"expand student recreation," the head of
the Physical Education Center, Lenny
Klaver said. He hopes to "have a first
class facility" and the is a "good possi-

Alumni Association
The Alumni Association is little
known to students until after they gradu-
ate. Sara J. Walker is the president of
this Association and is dedicated to the
goals the Alumni have for this year. Sara
said the main goal this year is,''Focusing
on the current students." She went on,
"To become more student-oriented, we
appreciate input from current
students ....If their clubs or organizations
would like to invite the Alumni
Association to speak on campus or at
their clubs, for any event, we are avail-
able for that also."
,
Sara continued, "There's an
interest in the Alumni Association to
help alums with finding work. There are
alumni who are willing to help graduat-
ing seniors ....Most alumni are flattered
when you talk to them about how to ini-
tiate a job search, what the job market is
like, and what jobs are in [the student's]
field of interest."
To bring the Alumni
Association closer to UW-Parkside's stu-

selected: this year they are Teri

Parks ide is adding on to their
Physical Education Center which will
not only benefit the students but the pub-
lic as well. The $11 million dollar pro-
ject was expected to be done in two
phases.
Splitting the phase would
enable the University to provide funds
easier but would also take longer to see
the results.
The addition now will be done
in one phase because the funding is
available and is hoped to be added in
about two years. The addition will
include a larger locker
room
to provide
locker rentals, a new aerobic super cir-
cuit doubled in size, a larger weight
room, a dance studio, three new class-

a
new issue and equipment room.

AssoCiation
After students graduate they are
automatically members of the Alumni
Association, which requires no dues or
fees and are invited and encouraged to
atte~d events. B~fore studenis graduate
is also a good time to contactthe
Association for initiating ajob search or
finding out about the job market. Alumni
have "Real World Experience," and they
can give students answers to questions
and let them know who, what, when,
where, why and how.
Jacobson, who is president of PSGA,
and Muhannad Hamdan, who graduated
last semester and was the Interim Multi-
Cultural Coordinator. Muhannad said
that he did not even know they existed
until after he graduated and the
Association had contacted him. That is
why the Alumni Association is putting
their focus on students this year.
If UW-Parkside is where your
heart is, but you w
ill
not be graduating
because of a transfer, contact the Alumni
Association and tell them you are inter-
ested in receiving information.
They are hoping to get sugges-

be of service to all students. The contacts

This week's meeting included
the new Director of Union and Student
Activities' ideas to make the Union
Bazaar and Union Square more exciting
for students, the moving of a club to a
new area, a newly appointed secretary
for PSGA, nominees to fill the three sen-
ate seats that are open, and the State of
Wisconsin's budget that includes the
expansion of the"Physical Education
building.
Upon completing roll call, the
Student Government opened the floor to
_JoAnne Yantis, new activities director.
She announced that she is committed to
making the Union area more appealing
for students and guests, including
extending the hours of the Union Square
on the weekends. She welcomes sugges-
tions and thoughts about what we have
now and what students envision for the
future of UW-Parkside. Since the univer-
sity is found on acres of trees and
wildlife, making a
"Rainforest
Cafe" was
one of her ideas, which would bring a
unique attraction to the Union. Students
are encouraged to bring various ideas to
the attention of JoAnne Yantis, in room
Union 209.
Steve McLaughlin, PSGA advi-
sor, announced that the Wisconsin Senate
approved the State's budget and the gov-
ernor will sign it around October
l.
The
budget includes UW-Parkside's plans for
the Physical Education building expan-
sion and raising tuition again
according
to the "Tuition-Flex" plan, which col-
lects additional revenues for faculty and
staff.
A room has been found for
WPRS radio station. Toward the end of
the semester they will be moved into the
room where PAW (Parkside Area
Wargamers) is now found.
Donace Hundley has been
appointed as the new secretary, she is a
transfer student from Cleveland State
University and this is her first semester
at UW-Parkside. She once served as a
secretary in the Coast Guard, and is a
computer science major who is experi-
enced in Web Site design.
Corey Mandley said that the
United Council's meeting, that was held
on campus last week, had an excellent
turnout. The next UC meeting is in
Superior,
Wisconsin.
Nominations for the three
spring seats were stiIIopen. A senator is
the only one who can nominate a candi-
date for another senate seat. They nomi-
nated nine candidates, and each of those
nine gave a short speech on why they are
qualified for the position. After the sena-
tors voted on those nine nominated,
Chris Leitski and Luis Benevoglienti
filled two of the seats, and a three-way
tie was between Carnelius Russel,
Coleen Tartaglia and Brandy Pinson. The
tie will be decided on Friday, October

Parkside Adult Student
Alliance
PASA meets on Monday, October 13, at noon in

Meetings are every other Monday.
Come see what we can do for you!!!
The Peer Health Educators are
sponsoring Alcohol Awareness Week
October 6 - 10, including a dance on
Thursday the 9th in the Union Square.
Take a chance and evaluate
yourself, be open-minded. Have you
looked in the mirror lately? Have you
looked at your behaviors? Five weeks
into school we've met new people, gone
new places and done new things.
Usually by the sixth week in
school drinking patterns are established,
especially among college freshmen.
Those new people and new things may
have become the same old people doing
the same old things.
Thinking about drinking and
acting responsibly is a chore at times,
but it's something we need to think
about. Besides the obvious things alco-
hol can affect -- such as school, sex and
friendships -- behavior and our future are
characteristics we can alter with abuse.
If you cannot evaluate yourself,
or do not want to, maybe you should
think about what you use and why.
Often times we create our own problems,
but there are healthy solutions. Miller,
Budweiser, Busch and other alcoholic
beverages are only an escape.
If you have any questions
regarding alcohol/drug abuse, the Peer
Health Educators will have a table set up
in the Main Place October 6 - 10 for
AAW. Besides the dance, the table will
offer a chance to
try
out Fatal Vision
goggles, simulating a drunken vision.
The PHE's can also be reached through
Student Health and Counseling Services
at 595.2354. Stop by and check us out,
we dare you!

PAW searches for space to game
Amanda Bulgrin
Editor-in-chief
The Parks ide Association of
Wargarners (PAW) and the University of
Wisconsin-Parkside's radio station
(WPRS), have recently been the center
of debate. Each organization is search-
ing for ample and efficient space to
house their equipment and meetings.
According to Dean Stephen
McLaughlin, the space in Molinaro
Level 4 has been granted to WPRS, but
it still subject to change. An October
10th date has been set to find adequate
room for PAW.
Conflicting views still stand in
the issue of the space problem.
According to Student Organizations
Council (SOC) secretary Teri Jacobson.
PAW was an inactive member of SOC at
the end of last semester. Their lack of
attendance at SOC meetings caused PAW
to lose their budget. Jacobson also stat-
ed that proper notification was sent to
PAW.
PAW President. Andrew Kenth
on the other hand, responded that he was
not informed of this information and that
Paw was an active club, raising $2000
over the semester.
One opinion of the Facilities
Planning Committee is that there is a
stronger academic link between the radio
station and academics than the
Wargamers and academics. Because the
space is in an academic building, this
plays a large role in the decision. The
radio station will be directly associated
with the communications department and
hopefully broadcasting classes will be
offered in correlation with the station,
and PAW is associated with the history
department.
.
Another factor in the decision
of room placement is of cost and conve-
nience. Student funding will have to
provide $80 per foot of wire connecting
the station to the antenna, the higher the
room, the more cost effective the station
will be. Another issue is the need for an
outside entrance, which Molinaro L4
offers.
PAW and WPRS are willing to
work the issue out. An offer was made
by PAW to share the space; however, due
to the amount of people that would be
sharing the space, Risk Management
rejected this offer. This is yet one more
reason that the station would be better
suited for Moln L4.· The-chance of risk
is much lower with one or two people in
the room at a time than the larger group
of people that game in the PAW room.
President of PAW stated that the.
club was simply looking for a room of
equal size. "There are several members
of PAW that are interested in the station,
so
it
is not an anti-radio situation," stated
President Andrew Kenth, "we just want
an acceptable room."
Stephanie Hess, assistant station
manager of WPRS, agreed that it was
not a club vs. club debate. "We never
pushed for the room. We hope that the
Wargamers will be able to use our sta-
tion by broadcasting a show on the air,"
stated Hess. She added that the faster
this issue be cleared up, the sooner
WPRS will be broadcasting.

Coleen Tartaglia
Editor-in-chief
This week, Pro-Tempore Zac
Pawlowski introduced Resolution
#
97
B~I, a new treasurer was appointed and
a re-election
for the senate seats because
of a technicality.
Resolution
#
97 B-1 was intro-
duced in the best interest of the ""dents
at UW-Parkside. It contains a lot of tech-
nical jargon, but it is basically this: if for
any reason, funds need to be taken out of
any type of budget in PSGA, a typed
copy of the allocated funds must be
given to every mem ber in attendance at
the meetings. The next week it will be
voted on whether or not the money will
be withdrawn from the budget. In the
event of an emergency, this waiting
peri-
od may be waned." An emergency is
defined as, "An action that is absolutely
necessary to the continued existence of
PSGA .... [arid] determined by a unani-
mous vote
of the
senate."
Newly appointed Treasurer
DeShon Jackson has been at UW-
Parkside since 1994, is a graduating
senior, a history minor, president of his
fraternity "Iota Phi Theta", is Seargent at
Arms at BSU and a member of the
Stallion Study Club.
Because of a technicality, last
week's nominees were voted on again.
The five nominees from last week were
in the running this week, and with the re-
voting, Chris Leipski and Coleen
Tartaglia were elected as spring senators,
and there was a two-way tie between
Luis Benevoglienti and Camel ius Russel.
The deciding vote for the tie will be held
this Friday.
Vice-President Corey Mandley
apologized for any inconvenience this
technicality may have caused anyone.
Problems with Parkside's mission statement
Rebecca Vankervoorde
News Editor
When this years new mission
statement came up f9r
approval,
ques-
tions were raised as to
why
past state-
ments concerning managerial and tech-
nological areas were being dropped. The
mission statement outlines the goals and
values to guide the school in serving the
public.
"The current statement says the
region is adapting to a changing indus'tri-
aI-technological society," said George
Perdikaris, professor and chairman of the
computer science and
engineering ,
department.
"It
says the university
..
offers professional and preprofessional
programs. It's good to say we are offer-
ing the opportunity to get jobs in those
areas."
On September
23,
a revised
mission statement approved by the
University Planning Council was sent to
each of Parkside's four governance
groups for further approval. If it is
approved by each group, it will be con-
sidered by the Board of Regents at its

Tuition to rise for UW-system schools
Rebecca Vankervoorde
News Editor
The United Council, a state stu-
dent association in Wisconsin represent-
ing more than 140,000 students on 24
UW System campuses, stated in a press
release that as the Wisconsin Senate pre-
pares to bring their final compromises in
the 1997-1999 state budget bill to the
floor, students from across the state will
be the big losers in the budget.
Students biggest
loser in state budget
Melissa Sahr
In the early morning hours of
October II, 1997, after months of heated
debate, Governor Tommy Thompson
passed a budget that will forever affect
students in Wisconsin. The budget will
raise tuition 15% within the next two
years because of the "Tuition Flex". The
only thing that might have saved stu-
dents some money was the "Sunset
Clause", which would-have made the
"Tuition Flex" plan invalid after two
years unless it was put back into the bud-
get.
As bad as this sounds, the stu-
dents didn't lose everything'Financial
Aid was raised to 20%, Pell Grant minu-
mums were raised to $3,000, and the
State Student Incentive Grants were kept
in the budget. One major problem with
Pell Grants and SSIG's is that these are
not offered to independant students as
much as they are offered to dependant
students.
.
We can also use "Tuition Flex"
to our advantage by calling your local
senator and asking him or her to pass
Assembly Bill 33, which is the "Tuition
Cap" bill. This bill would notallow
tuition to rise above 33% for in-state stu-
dents and 120% for out-of-state students.
What can students do? Make a
few simple phone ~alls to your .Iocal.sen-
ators telling them that youare disapoint-
ed about how the budget was not in the
students favor, and ask them to support
Assembly Bill 33. It's as simple as that.
A new provision call "Tuition
Flexibility" has been added to the budget
that allows the UW System Board of
Regents to raise tuition levels above lev-
els set by the legislature. This provision
is being used to pay for faculty salary
increases which in the past has been a
shared cost between students and the
state. "Tuition Flexibility" has students
fully funding these increases.
" 'Tuition Flexibility' is the sin-
gle most damaging thing the legislature
can do to educational affordability in
Wisconsin," said Steve Perals,
Legislative Affairs Director for United
Council. "Forcing student to cover the
cost of items they have traditionally
shared with the state demonstrates a lack
of commitment to higher education and
will
drive up tuition at an alarming rate."
According to Perala, how this
will affect University of Wisconsin-
Parks ide is that tuition can increase 8%
this year and 7% next year because of
this provision. UW-Parkside will
be
affected the same as other UW system
schools for this two year budget.

with the aim of promoting women in the
computer sciences program. Women
represent less than one-fifth of the stu-
dents currently enrolled in UW-
Parkside's Computer Science major.
The award will support a lab
with 28 computer work stations and two
file servers. UW-Parkside has matched
the grant to build a facility with about
$100,000 in equipment. Among other
things, Haller will conduct activities to
promote women in science such as orga-
nizing open houses for high school stu-
dents and their parents.
The National Science
Foundation recently awarded $62,000 to
the University of Wisconsin-Parks ide
Computer Science and Engineering
Department to establish a program for
attracting and retaining women as candi-

Students make a difference in the
Racine area
There has recently been numer-
ous tire alarms at the University of
Wisconsin-Parkside's housing facility,
Ranger Hall. All of which were pulled
by unknown persons or parties. This has
caused safety concerns in the UW-
Parks ide's Housing and Police depart-
ments.
Officer Schlect of the
University Police Department expressed
concern over the fact that with repeated
false alarms, students will become com-
placent and will not evacuate the build-
ing when the tire alarm sounds.
"It is not only disruptive, it
poses a serious risk to the students living
there," Schlect stated.
The University Police will be
meeting with Housing Director DeAnne

On Saturday, October 25, stu-
dents in Roseann Mason's Cross Cultural
Reading and Writing class attended
"Make a Difference Day" in Racine.
Twenty students accompanied by Mason
and student intern Katie Kozenski spent
the morning providing a number of ser-
vices to the community.
The students participated in
cleaning a green space on the comer of
6th and N. Memorial which will one day
become a memorial. After the job was
done, the class, along with other mem-
bers of the community, walked along the
streets of the area picking up trash and
cleaning the streets and alley ways.
Along with these services, students
painted and helped out at the Racine
Family Resource-Center.
"I'm feeling good inside," said
Dave Lutzke, "This experience is help:

Right: David Lutzke
"Since I'm now part of the community, I thought I could help make
it better than it already is," said Jason Correll: "By my classmates
and I doing this, it makes us stronger people."
ing me grow as a person. I enjoy giving
back to the community."
While at the center, many stu-
dents volunteered to help out with the
children of the neighborhood providing
services that they excelled in.
All of the students expressed a
great deal of accomplishment and pride
in the work that they were doing.
Charlotte "TweDee" Perry was excited
about the project. "I am very happy to
be here to help the community of
Racine," Perry said, "I only wish that 1
had started at an earlier age."
The Racine Family Resource
.Center is looking for volunteers. For

We live in a world of technolo-
gy. Numbers fly across our computer
screens for strangers ot see; credit, iden-
tification, phone numbers, address;
income,expense, insurance, investment,
charge cards ect, Any computer wizard
can find your social security number and
that is what causes credit fraud. The
only way to prevent this is to know your
rights as a student and a citizen.
As reported in the Wisconsin
State Journal, September 14, 1997, an
article written by Stacey Singer from the
Sun-Sentinel, Fort Lauderdale, Floriday,
Bronti Kelly, a temprary department
store worker, in Temecula, CA, lost his
wallet and the thief who found it
runed
his personal history. "The theif who
found Kelly's missing wallet was caught
shoplifting. The thief presented Kelly's
ID
as his own. For the next four years,
Kelly could not find work at another
department store and didn't kmow why.
Finally, a prospective employer told
Kelly that a shoplifting incident
appeared on his background check."
In anthter case, "William Dwyer
lost his identity in 1994 at a Hollywood,
FL used-car dealership which he had
never set foot That year, authorites told
him, someone at the dealership probably
dialed into the Equifax credit reporting
bureau and rifled through electronic
credit reports, looking for good target.
The thief settled on Swyer, an aerospace
engineer for NASA in Houston. He
copied Dwyer's private infrornation and
sold it to a Nigerian crim ring." n the
next three years, the thieves charged
more than $35,000 to Dwyer's credit
cards which they had illegally obtained.
It
took a Secret Service tsk force investi-
gation ot uncover this fraud.
Police said, "THe crime of
stealing someone else's credit is so corn-
mon that all they can do little except
shrug ...
Unless the criminal is caught in
the act of using the fraudulent docu-
ments, the ocst adn dtfort of an investga-
