Evaluations are looked at when a teacher is up for a raise, promotion, or tenure. The Attorney General has ruled that it is legal for students to have access to teacher evaluations. Lisa Kornetsky has been dealing with this issue since the beginning. The committee she helped put together is called The Student Course Information Pilot Project. This pilot project will be tested in four departments at the end ofthe semester. When asked what these four departments will do, Kornetsky said, "Each department will hand out EffectiveJanuary 1, 1995, the State of Wisconsin will ban the burial of recyclable materials in landfills. The Wisconsin Recycling Law requires all individuals and institutions in the state of Wisconsin to recycle. It provides a prioritized list of waste management options. Recycling is the third option, behind reducing and reusing. UW-Parkside is attempting to comply with the state law as follows. Presently there are 24 recycling stations in the public areas around campus. Each station consists of three bins: one for paper, one for commingled material (glass, plastic, and metal), and one for waste. Each recycling bin is labeled to show its purpose. Phase 2 will include the installation of additional units, including refurbished trash receptacles. "My discussion today will look at how national news magazines characterize race relations between blacks, Asian-Americans and Hispanics," Thornton said. When researching using articles published between 1980 and 1992, Thornton and his colleagues found 51 articles from 18 magazines dealing with race relations and the media. Only three of those dealt with race relations specifically. The remainder, he states, had, "ideas and discussions that are embedded in larger discussions." Thornton stated that there is, "an underlying set of agendas that the media was playing with in terms of how they present race relations generally." In support of this, he states, "what the press ignored in LA was that Racejcontinued on·p. 2. Previous studies had been limited to calculating the number of minorities in mass media organizations or Pamela Bradshaw Staff Writer MichaelThornton,an associate professor from UW- Madison, spoke at Parkside about his research into how national news magazines portray race relationships among minorities. The December 1st lecture was , sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs with funding from the Wisconsin Humanities Council. In his presentation, Thornton theorizes that "we primarily get our understanding about race and race relations from the mass medias." However, when searching for evidence he states that he discovered, "there are no studies looking at how mass media influences the nature of our understanding of race relations. In other words, how groups of people get along together." There will be a Tree of Hope displayed in the alcove next to the Women's Center Dec. 5 through finals. The tree is to remind us of the meaning ofthe holiday season, and we hope that everyone will take a few moments out of their busy schedules to remember the less fortunate by bringing in non-perishable food items. Michael Thornton looking at what stereotypes a single minority group presented on television. This prompted Thornton and his colleagues to begin their own study of race relations. If there needs to be any connection between the two issues, Snyder says that there should be a "minimal connection between them." Another problem that Snyder sees associated with the sexual harassment policy is that it was never endorsed by the faculty senate, yet it is on the books and presumably enacted. This raised the issue of Spoto, a suit filed by the faculty senate of UW- Platteville against the Evals, continued from p. 1 often judge their teachers on whether they liked them or not. They could judge their style of teaching. When asked how she treats her surveys, Davis replied that if a student does make a valid and helpful suggestion she would consider a change. She is also encouraged by good comments. Davis feels a little uncomfortable with the idea of these surveys being published. She believes the publishing the information would be acceptable if it was printed in a discreet, non-threatening way. She was concerned, though, with how much information would be revealed. have two sources of feedback that will let them know where they stand with students. Jessica Davis, a German instructor at UW- Parkside, has been teaching for six years. Davis is in favor of students evaluating their teachers because "Students do have a right to express their opinion and have a chance to give the teachers feedback on their performance throughout the semester." She feels that students should try to be fair when making these evaluations. The only problem with evaluations, according to Davis, is that students and these questions will ask, among other things, about teaching style and questions ifthe objectives ofthe teacher were clear." Eventually the results and a syllabus ofthe class will be made available in the library. These results will probably not be available until next year. "Students are qualified to evaluate certain aspects, but they are not best qualified to evaluate other things such as the content of the material," said Kornetsky. Thornton feels that there are a number of important things that the magazines did not discuss regarding face relations. He states, "there's no discussion about economics, there's no discussion [or] very little discussion about racism, there's very little discussion about any of the wider thing while most of the press discussed black and Asian-American relations. Thornton continued by looking at what groups the media described as being involved in racial conflicts. He found mention of blacks, Hispanics and Asian-Americans. He states that, " what the media did, they homogenized each one of those groups." Thornton found the term black interchanged for Haitian, West Indian, African and Latin. He said Hispanics played a very important role in terms of what happened. One example ofthis is that most of the people arrested in LA were Hispanic. Why didn't the press make a big deal of that? '" involved in the Parkside Student Bruce Rocco Government Association (PSGA) (anarti<t'srmdering) as an dedicated and active member, will be taking a temporary leave of absence. During Rocco's two year involvement with this organization he has made great efforts in improving PSGA along with the entire student body. Until the recent PSGA meeting, held Friday, Jan. 20, he was SUFAC liaison to both the Parkside Child Care Center an the Ranger News. In the time since he was elected as senator in the spring of 1992, Bruce has worked hard at constantly getting resolutions and policies passed. One of the programs he worked hardest on was the safewalk program which began in the spring of 1993 after a rape occurred on Wood Road. With Bruce Rocco's resolution and footwork, along with great efforts from Marlene Schlecht, UW- Parks ide police officer, the program made it off the ground. Bruce recalls that it was the first time PSGA had ever established a working relationship between the Assistant Chancellor of Student Affairs and the UW-Parkside Police Department. "It was the first piece of legislature," Rocco recalled, "that I have ever seen passed with acclimation and signed by the President [of PSGAj that day." Bruce feels that his greatest accomplishment with PSGA has yet to happen, but he said, "The next greatest accomplishment is that [ have developed a fine working relationship with the finest bunch of professionals that I have ever met in my life." Other activities Bruce Rocco and the entire student government have been strongly involved with include budget cuts, United Council, and trying to get more people involved In public elections in both Racine and Kenosha counties and on the national scene. Rocco also held the position of Vice President of PSGA from December, 1993 through April I, 1994. Science Grants Awarded by Brian Matsen News Writer Due to the persistent efforts of Joseph Balsano, the University of Wisconsin-Parks ide has been awarded two federal grants worth nearly $90,000. Balsano, a professor of biological sciences, is a man whose goal is to see more science taught in classrooms. Science Fellows I, one of Balsano's programs. was awarded $40,807 and has been an on-going project for the past ten years. Every year for the past decade, Bals ano has 'received funding from outside sources such as school districts and various programs. "I've been very fortunate," he commented. Originally, the federal government funded his efforts under the National Science FOundation, then also from the U.S. Department of Education. This department houses the Wisconsin Dwight D. Eisenhower Mathematics and Science Act. Joseph Balsano These grants are not handed or awarded to institutions, but must be applied for by a written proposal. The federal government gives money to the UW-system, but members of a board don't "allocate it to anyone," he stated. Balsano stated grants are competitive and one must propose ideas and goals that address a need or needs to students. That's why Balsano consulted school districts and 'administrations, gathenng ideas before writing his proposal. "You wouldn't want to give away money for anything," he commented. Balsano feels he IS and has been addressing a need - Science Fellows I, and now Science Fellows II and Ill. Balsano said, "What we're doing is quite popular," referring to Science Fellows 1: A program to Improve Science Education in the Elementary School. Other organizations which once criticized Balsano's work are now beginning to model his program The first objective of this two-fold 'strategy is to reduce the teacher's anxiety to teach basic scientific facts, information. and concepts. The following goal is to provide these teachers with materials that will encourage hands-on-science. This will apply practical knowledge to the hands-on- experience that should make learning fun. Children want to do things. they have a short- attention span. "Lectures are no-no," he said. "The whole idea [of this program] is to ge more science taught." and h sees this as the way t accomplish it. by Brian Matsen News Writer Starting immediately, you'd be wrong if you referred to the building that houses the library, Main Place, and a number of administrative offices as The Wyllie Library Learning Center. Chancellor Eleanor J. Smith explained that a name change from the Wyllie Library Learning Center (WLLC) to Wyllie Hall is part of an overall project. Smith said the signs on campus are "a little piece of the project." Assistant Chancellor William W. Streeter, who works with administration and fiscal affairs, is responsible for exploring the ideas of where to post new signs on 1- 94, highways, and local roads around the community. He's working with an outside consultant to map out the best locations for these new signs. The Chancellor wants the university to be user-friendly, and she sees the simplification of Wyllie Library Learning Center to Wyllie Hall-as a good beginning for the college and the community. The name change is to help establish consistency with the other three halls (Molinaro, Greenquist, and Tallent), and to help prevent further confusion about what services are located in that facility. In the former Wyllie Library Learning Center, keying in on the word "library", one could mistake the building as just where the library is, and if he or she is looking for a certain room, he or she might assume that it would be in the library. "It assumes that everything is in the library." said the Chancellor. She wants students, faculty. and guests to be able to find the appropriate rooms and services without hassles. Again, she wants Wyllie Hall to be user-friendly. Harriet Wyllie, widow to founding Chancellor Irvin G. Wyllie, did not mind the name- change and said, ''I'm just glad they're keeping the [Wyllie] name." Originally, the university was going to name the building "Wy llie Center," which Mrs. Wyllie wishes they would have kept. The building was named Wyllie Library Learning Center in 1972 after Chancellor Wyllie who died in October of 1974. Racism lecture Jan.31 "Campus Racism Today: Blueprint for Uprooting Discrimination in America's College" will be discussed by political activist and historian Manning Marable during a free lecture at the University of Wisconsin-Parks ide on Tuesday, Jan. 31. The lecture will be held at 7 p.m. in Room 104 of the UW- Parkside Union, located at the far north end of the main campus complex. The lecture is sponsored by the university's Black History Month Committee and the Parkside Activities Board. Marable is professor of history and political science and director Columbia University's Institute for Research in African American Studies. He is the author of several books including "Beyond Black and White: Historical and Political Essays," "African-American Studies: Critical Perspectives of the Black Experience" and "Race, Reform and Rebellion: The second Reconstruction in Black America." Marable also is author of the syndicated newspaper column "Along the Color Line," published in more than 250 newspapers and broadcast by approximately 60 radio stations. Extended Shuttle Bus Hours The University Police and public safety is conducting a survey to determine if there is a need and interest to extend the hours of service of the Shuttle Bus. It was suggested by the Sexual Assault Prevention Task Force that the Shuttle Bus extend operation to 10:30 pm. This service would be one of three Escort Services available. on the Parkside Campus during the evening hours. The University Police provides escorts as well as the Campus Safewalk Program. Arthur Con Mateo Mackbee, Peer Health Educator and captain of the team sponsoring the event, states that there will be new activities this year and old activities that won't be continued. "This year we're going to try to put together at least two panels that have college specific facts about STD's and alcohol related incidents." A dance won't be held this year because of time restraints. Condom roses won't be sold either. Last year the Peer Health Educators made the roses themselves which took a Jot of time. The condom roses were later patented. When Mackbee was asked how well he thought the program worked towards educating students he replied, "I think it works as a whole ...just for them to see all the brochures and the Well ness on Wheels gets their minds thinking if it's just for one day." Mackbee believes that having the program on Valentine's Day increases student's awareness, "It usually is a good turnout because people have love on their minds." Her words began this year's tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. entitled "Remember His Dream," held noon Wednesday, Jan 25, in Main Place. The event consisted of music, poetry, speeches, and applause. In Jackson's introduction of this commemorative, she cautioned the audience not to just follow King's advisive dream that day, but to continue further, his dream in the generations to come. "His dream is possible," she said. The program lasted forty-fi ve minutes. The Voices of Parkside and the Parkside Chorale, under the direction of Dr. James Kinchen, sang two selections which celebrate African-American themes. The first piece was entitled "Ujima," and the latter was called "Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning." Dr. Kinchen, in reference to the second song, said, "In other words, be ready ..' He said that this song is a spiritual song. "Christian journey soon be over; the time is drawing nigh," is a line from the song that illustrated the urgency of racial harmony. "I enjoyed it. In "My People," Lewis warned the audience of low self- esteem, indicating that it causes violence, and then said that if people have high self-esteem, they will also have high estecm for one another - eventually coming together. A quote from the poem reads, "If some of us don't get our act togeLher, we will lose our existence ... My people, get it together, and we must get it right." In his first poem, Lewis talked of existence, but in ignorance: 'There's no difference in the total darkness," began the first line. I, 1995. "All previous attempts at recycling were just warm-ups .or this· the real thing," according to Bill Niebhur, Director of the Parkside Union. Niebbur explained that the campus waste stream and compliance to the new law will be monitored by our trash and recyclable contractor, Go of Wisconsin/Land Reclamation Company ,LRC) of Racine. 'i- Snowmobile accident by Brian Matsen On Friday, January 20, at approximately 10:30 p111. a male in his late twenties was involved in a snowmobile accident on UW~Parkside property. The UW-P police department was unauthorized to give the injured man's name. On Hwy E. cast of Hwy JR, the victim was knocked off of his snowmobile while passing through the Parkside baseball field parking lot. He didn't see the chain separating the 101 from the field, said Chief Robert Deane. People walking by notified the UW-P police, and an officer administered first aid. The injured man was brought to 51. Catherine's Hospital by ambulance, where his condition was unknown. No further information was given and an investigation is still pending. UWPAC124 Ranger News Text Any textual data included in the document volume 23, Issue 18 Parkside responds to tragedy by Karen Diehl News Editor Carol Lee Saffioti-Hughes, Professor of English and Associate Chair of the English Department at UW-Parkside, is currently recovering from the Jan. 31 car accident which injured her and killed her z.year-old daughter. Safficti-Hughes suffered broken ribs and a broken collar bone and is still in intensive care at Doyne Hospital in Milwaukee. The accident occurred at the intersection of Ryan Road and 27th Street in Franklin. Saffioti-Hughes was taking her daughter, Autumn, to child care before reporting to work. The accident occurred at 7:40 am when her car, westbound on Ryan Road, collided with a minivan travelling south on 27th street. Saffioti-Hughes has been through surgery to repair her broken bones. Her recovery time is expected to be short, perhaps 2-3 weeks. She remains in ICU, and will probably be there until early next week. Until that time, people are urged to refrain from calling the hospital. The UW-Parkside community has begun responding to Carol Lee's tragedy. A memorial fund is to be set up at Children's Hospital in Autumn's name, as is another fund through Educator's Credit Union. Students in Dr. Safficti- Hughes' Advanced Expository Writing class are sending cards and poems reflecting their support and sympathy. Tanya Melendez, a student in the class, said, "l thought it was important for us to get together and show her our thoughts are with her." Other students on campus have expressed similar feelings. The Parks ide Student Government Association sent a card to Dr. Saffioti-Hughes. Jennifer Buchholz, President of PSGA, said, "As we all know, this was a tragic incident. I think I speak for all students in wishing her a quick recovery. I also send my deepest sympathies in her loss. I hope she knows how much this event has impacted the students. Marable says, 'Multiculturalism pays! by Tabitha Brown Staff Writer Before a group of students, staff, and other community members, Dr. Manning Marable, Director of Columbia University's Institute for Research in African American Studies, spoke on the topic of campus racism Tuesday January 31 in Parkside's Union 104. In his lecture, entitled "Blueprint for Uprooting Discrimination in America's Colleges, Marable asserted that an appreciation of history is important because "it gives us a sense of who we are ...this special consciousness lets us know who we really are." Marable noted that most students aren't given a good cultural balance in their education. "You are culturally deficient if you don't read African American literature," Marable stated, "or studyAfrican American sociologists." One form of prejudice that Marable noted as prevalent on many campuses is that which deals with assumptions about scholarships. "Only two percent of all scholarships are designated for African Americans in the United States," he stated. Marable said that- many non-minority students believe that a great number of scholarships are designated for African American students. "Many argue that scholarships for minority students is a form of reverse discrimination," Marable stated. Marable used the example of legacy scholarships which are earmarked for the sons of Harvard University graduates. An astonishing forty-four percent of those admitted to Harvard are financed with the aid of legacy dollars. "Only when scholarships are awarded to African Americans or Latinos do we see a problem." A sweeping trend that Marable notices on college campuses across the U.S. is a growing pattern of discrimination. "What we see is a growth of institutional discrimination." The immense decrease in the number of young students of color in our inner city who aren't receiving an adequate I education is one of the items that Marable cites as unfortunate. He stated that this is attributable to "the new segregation between the educated haves, and the semi-educated have nots.' "Racism is an invisible tax against the labor power, creativity, and intellect of people of color," Marable stated when detailing the different forms of poverty. Regarding financial poverty he stated that most of the individuals who live in poverty are not people of color. Marable said that the problems of the 1990's are far more sophisticated. "We need to understand that the challenges ahead require a different vision," he said. As a political activist and social critic, Marable stated, "we must have the courage to search for common ground to advance toward ideals of a democracy without discrimination." Manning Marable He stated that we have to build a new kind of leadership. Marable, who writes a nationally published column entitled "Along the Color Line," said in his speech that "the historic color line will be reversed for African Americans." This notion of reversal relates to his ideas about the post-modern discourse presently in effect which is essentiaJIy racism without responsibility. "To relate to people you need to know something about their history and their culture," he stated. Without these components he says that two individuals cannot have an honest conversation. One final thought that Dr. Marable expressed was, "muliculturalism pays." UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN.PARKSIDE February 9, 1995 Multicultural education a priority by Pamela Bradshaw Staff Writer , .... ~.::.., The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs in conjunction with the Ethnic Studies Center received a $2000 grant from the UW System to fund a Faculty Development in Multicultural Education Program. The grant was awarded to accomplish the goals in the Design for Diversity Program. The money will be split between five courses submitted by instructors. Two courses all ready accepted are a class in Cross- Cultural Psychology and a business course entitled ''The Changing Workplace." According to Anthony Brown, Director of the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, the purpose of the grant is to "get faculty members that do not have courses that are under the diversity requirement involved in the Design for Diversity and enhance their 'course.' The professors who receive the grants can use to funding to go to a conference, buy a computer program for a class, buy more books and reading materials or anything that fulfills the goals of the Design for Diversity program. The Design for Diversity program, started in 1988 by the then President Shaw of the Uw-System. was created to increase the presence of American Indian, African American, Asian American and LatinolHispanic students, faculty and staff in UW institutions. "Generally we have met all of the goals for Design for Diversity," Brown stated, also citing that Parkside has the second highest percentage of minority students in the UW system. UW-Milwaukee has the highest percentage. "We fortunately have received many grants from different areas over the last five years," said Brown. The current grant is the second received from the UW -System. -The office was also awarded a grant from the Wisconsin Humanities Council that is being used to fund speakers. Two presentations were given last semester and two more will take place this April. One of the speakers will be discussing Chinese Culture and its relation to dance and tradition. The free lecture will take place on April 21 following the Multicultural Center's awards ceremony. More information will be announced regarding the lectures as the dates grow nearer. Brown feels that cultural education is important for students entering a work force much more diverse than it was twenty years ago. "If we could get every department to have one course in diversity, then that would really open up the world to all the students on campus." Chancellor's inaugural activities by Pamela Bradshaw Staff Writer "University and Community: Moving Together into the 21 st Century" will be the theme for the inauguration ofPaI'kside's fourth Chancellor, Eleanor 1. Smith. The inauguration will be held on Saturday, April 1,_ at J 0 am in the Communication Arts Theater. Following the inauguration will be a reception and luncheon in Main Place. Other weekend activities will include a presentation of Chancellor Smith's work on Friday, March 31, and a University open house on Saturday, April 1, from 1:30to 3:30pm. The Friday presentation will be a concert written by Chancellor Smith entitled "Black Heritage: History, Music and Dance." The music will be from various periods of black history. It will be directed by Professor James Kinchen and performed by members of the UW-Parkside community and its environs. "I've always performed the concerts so it will be nice to see what somebody else does with it and I can sit there and look at it being performed and that will be very exciting," said Chancellor Smith, about the performance. The open house on Saturday will have displays, demonstrations and activities presented by the different departments, centers and programs at the University. Among the displays will be the architectural design for the proposed expansion of the physical education and housing buildings. Chancellor Smith encourages students to attend the inauguration because she thinks "they are a very important part of the community." The Chancellor states that one of her goals is "to open up this institution to the community and say we are a part of this community and you are a part of us." All the events will be free except for the luncheon which will cost $8 per person. The luncheon is subsidized by the university, but it couldn't cover the entire cost. Students will need to pick up tickets for the inauguration because space is limited. When and where the tickets will be available will be announced at a later time. iifK~. She explained that the second stage of becoming a battered woman is done through emotions. A "constant mirage of verbal abuse" grows in time and it "affects a shift of thinking," she observed. "I don't care who you are, ... if I lock you up with someone who calls you names, he'll destroy your soul," she said. Carpenter told the audience that domestic violence is taught, for example, in literature. She noted that there are books which foster the notion that if a woman loves a troubled man and helps him, he'll change for the better. This notion, Carpenter explained, is as harmful as the tradition that places the needs of the husband and child first before her own according to Carpenter. It frustrated Carpenter that in the last thirty years, domestic violence has not changed, and that people only take notice of its magnitude "after we see some woman's dead and bloody body on TV." Carol Engberg, volunteer coordinator of Parkside's volunteer program was also present. She spoke of a collaboration of the Women's Horizon's Inc., Kenoshans Against Sexual Assault (KASA), and Carpenter's Domestic Violence Project to offer training to become a shelter supervisor for battered women, and advocate assistant, or a children's program assistant. The days and times of this training is at Kenosha Hospital in the auditorium from February 14.thru March 9 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-9:00 pm. I in Union 104, Colleen Carpenter, program coordinator for the Domestic Violence Project in Kenosha, spoke on "Stopping Domestic Violence" - beginning one of seven various Soup & Substance Lectures, sponsored by the Parkside Activities Board and the Lecture and Fine Arts Committee. Carpenter, working with battered women for the past ten years and an activist in the women's movement for a previous seven to eight years, began with an observation. "On some level. we are all battered women," she said. She asked that we consider typical high school bullies or other people who tended to control situations. She stated that the behavior exhibited by these people is all about power. She also asserted that power without responsibility is dangerous. Carpenter urged that "if I communicate nothing else [during this talk. it] is not to fall in love with someone who batters you." She was sad to inform the audience that battered women who exhibit low self-esteem have been placed in a system that is labeled as "others." She also said that this label is first ushered upon the women by isolation. Carpenter went on to explain that "She" gives up parts of her life to make the husband happy. "She" stdps hanging around friends and acquaintances who her husband. doesn't like. "She" tries as hard as she can to please him. but it is never enough or she is doing something wrong. Carpenter stated that the woman always falls short of his expectations, and that this is done purposefully. "Batterers are like addicts," Carpenter said ~ never satisfied. The husband's amount of control is by Brian Matsen Staff Writer On behalf of Parkside's Activity Board (PAB), Diane Welsh, the assistant director of student life and director of university activities, recently applied for a grant from Arts Midwest. By her initiative, the Accent on Enrichment series at Parkside has received a $960 grant from this institution. This funding will directly cover touring artist and performance fees. Welsh observed that the Accent on Enrichment has been around since the 1%9 founding of Uw-Parksioe. The series was originally entitled, The Lecture Fine Arts Series, and it has always been a part of Parkside. The program's primary focus has been diversity. "The mission of the Uw-Parkside Accent on Enrichment Series," Welsh said, "is to present a high quality series of performing Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens to perfonn saxophones, drums, electrical guitars, and a synthesizer. The group has displayed their talent throughout the world, including Europe, Japan, and Australia, as the Queens have performed choreographed dance routines with their harmonies and by the mighty sound of Mahlathini 's characteristic voice, which is said to resemble a lion's roar. Smith, came to an end - finishing a nation-wide comprehensive search for a UW-Parkside Vice Chancellor/Provih'il. Of this search, over 135 applications were received, and the chair of this search, David J. Wright, associate professor of finance, was relieved to have the search go as well as it did. "Acting on behalf of the University," states the committee's mission statement, "the Committee will present to the Chancellor a slate of candidates for the position of Vice Chancellor/Provost who possess the skills, qualifications, and values necessary to serve and significantly advance the University's mission." Again, Wright was very pleased with the progress of the committee and looked forward towards the future months. "They worked very hard," he said, Their collective goal began in November to fulfill this mission. Phase one was to construct a job description position for the position of Vice Chancellor. They then various advertisements in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Black Issues in Higher Education, Women's Review of Books, and Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education, implementing a recruitment plan to produce a rich, diverse pool of qualified candidates. "Diversity," Wright said, is the "very key to our university." Among the professional and personal qualifications requested, was "a strong academic background with an earned terminal degree," appropriate administrative experience including experience in program planning and budgetary management," and possessing "strong oral, written, analytical, and interpersonal skills." In addition to the university's advertising and personal networking, direct mail announcements were sent to 2,200 organizations. Among them were Presidents, Chancellors, and Vice Chancellors of Wisconsin colleges and universities, independent of the UW system or not, members of Black, Hispanic, and Women's Caucuses, and the American Association of Universities. In phase two, the screening of these applicants are taking place - discussing with each candidate their background, re-evaluating their qualifications, and telephoning their references to check their credibility. So, bow do you find the job of your dreams? Baldwin said that he made opportunities for himself because he he learned quickly, making himself more valuable. "There were great opportunities in my job that were not initially apparent. Lots of things I didn't think I'd do," he said. One member of the audience, Margaret Wright said it was great that the alumni came back for the discussion. "It was a good panel," Wright said. New senators announced Noose hung over student's bed it has been said that McClellend had hung a noose over the beds of roommates that he had in the past. Triplett is upset that "the other incidents in the past involving Steve [McClellend] were looked over and the situations worsened." Sonya said, since last September, she has experienced nothing but positive surroundings and attitudes with this university. by Tabitha Brown Staff Writer After the weekend of February 4. 1995, Marlon Triplett, a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, returned to his room in the housing unit the following Monday to find a noose hung over his bed. "I wish to bring to your attention an incident that shocked me, made me very upset, and had me in fear of my life," Triplett wrote in a letter to Steve McLaughlin, dean of students. In addition to the noose hanging over his bed, Triplett found a note that he considered threatening on his dresser. It is alleged that his roommate, Steve McClellend, is responsible for both incidents. There was another occasion in which Triplett felt less than secure in his living situation with McCleliend. In the living room of their unit hung a poster with a note on it which read, "two down. but one to go." Tuition is no bargain, study finds UW-Parkside, Carthage address need for teachers of color A study of UW System tuition rates shows that UW System tuition is already near the median of peer institutions, not below the median as previous studies have shown. The study, conducted by the United Council of UW Student Governments, is based on data released last week by the UW System Administration, which compared the UW System to other university systems. The study shows that average four-year in-state UW tuition is very near the median of peer systems. The UW System average 1994-95 tuition is $4.895, and the low is the University of Texas system at $1,458. "This study debunks the misconception that UW tuition is lower than it should be. Our tuition is very close the median. salaries are at the median, and administrative costs are below the median. students are paying their fair share." said David C. Stacy, President of United Council. The study also shows that Wisconsin has much higher out- of-state tuition than most other states. While tuition is near the median of peer institutions, high out-of-state tuition is keeping in- state tuition below the average. At four-year UW System institutions. out-of-state tuition is more than $700 above the median. The average UW System out-of- state tuition is $5,003 compared to the median of $4.290. "The Board of Regents has clearly had a policy of raising tuition levels for out-of-state students to keep tuition levels lower for in-state. This policy improves access for Wisconsin residents," Stacy said. The UW System study also found that the cost of educating students in the UW System is significantly lower than the average among peer systems. "Education costs are lower in Wisconsin than in other states. It is because we have been more efficient here in Wisconsin that our tuition levels are not as high as systems such as the University of Massachusetts system and the Pennsylvania State University system," Stacy said. in grades 1-6 in schools in southeastern Wisconsin. "I feel that it is imperative that accurate information about the incident be available to the public," staled DeAnn Possehl, Director of Residence Life. "It is true that on February 6, 1995, Marian Triplett did return to find a noose hanging up in his room," She said that the incident was reported to Matt Hechel, the R.A., who then contacted her for input. Possehl advised Hechel to contact University Police. She stated that once an officer arrived at Triplett's room, he had left. University Police had to follow up with the situation later that evening when Triplett returned. According to Possehl. "The complaint is now being handled through the normal university student discipline process." Another concern that Possehl had was that Triplett hadn't complained about any"racist behavior" prior to the incident on February 4. Possehl stated, By Pamela Bradshaw "Should the Minimum wage be increased" was the topic of the February 15th Soup and Substance lecture. Norman Cloutier, associate professor of economics at UWParkside, outlined the advantages and disadvantages of raising the federal minimum wage. "At least up until the earlier 1980's you get a typical sawtooth pattern of the minimum wage," explained Cloutier, describing the increases in the minimum wage and subsequent decrease in its real value due to inflation. "During the Reagan administration the minimum wage wasn't increased at all," Cloutier stated. Currently, approximately 3% of all people employed earn the minimum wage. "The value of the minimum wage relative to other wages being earned is 30~50% of the average manufacturing wage. "The vast majority of economists Teri Jacobson "room conflicts are not unusual in an apartment living situation." She said that Hechel met with the residents of Triplett'S housing unit on at least two occasions to talk about any problems in the apartment. "It is standard residence Iife procedure to attempt to resolve roommate conflicts through mediation," Possehl stated. In addition, it was Triplett who requested a room change in November. Possehl approved a room change on February 3, 1995 when Triplett found one with which he was satisfied. Possehl added, "this request was approved prior to the incident." Hechel asserted that conflicts regarding cleanliness were the origional reasons why Triplett had asked to move. The Ranger quoted Triplet in a letter he addressed to Steve McLaughlin, Dean of students at UWParkside. Triplet requested that there should be training "in how to deal with racial and potentially hostile issues that impact on the student's living environment." In response, Possehl pointed out that "resident advisors receive approximately 50 hours of training in the fall and 16 hours of training mid year." However, Cloutier states that an increase would not cause "massive disemployment of any groups." "A 10% increase in the minimum wage will result in a 1-3% decline in employment for teenagers," Cloutier said. "It's going to hurt those people who have the lowest production, training or skill." "We should increase the minimum wage because we shouldn't have people working full time in poverty," Cloutier said, explaining the reasoning given for increasing the minimum wage. Difficulties in studying the effect of a minimum wage include: not all labor is covered by the minimum wage, different states have different levels of the minimum wage and not all employers comply with the minimum wage laws. by Brian Matsen At noon on February 15 in Molninaro 109, Mcri-Ra Kwesi , a lecturer on "Afrikan" fashion and culture and a designer of Africancentric apparel, brought an educational lecture and slide presentation to a highly receptive audience. Her presentation, The Cultural Destruction of Afrikan Fashions, Once Sacred, Now Desecrated, was based on her travels and research on the textiles of Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Spain, and also from assorted garments and accessories from Egypt, Cana, and Morocco. Kwcst's presentatio_n dealt with her Motherland, Africa, from ancient times to the present. Her goal was to "uncover the importance of African fashions" - what they meant; their symbolism; their authority - and transmit this cultural respect to her audience. She was upset that African fashions have not been taken seriously. In fact, through the plagiarism of African fashions, as her presentation proved, her culture's fashions have been ravaged. She continued to stress that "anything goes ... but they don't know the meanings." The study of ancient times in Africa show that power was illustrated by the clothes and accessories a person, whether they were a king, warrior or commoner, wore. "Not everybody was allowed to wear everything," she said. "If you increase the income of some people it is coming at the cost of not having income for some others," stated Cloutier. He also stated that he is against the minimum wage, believing that programs like the Earned Income Credit would help relieve poverty more effectively. Cloutier holds a doctorate in economics from West Virginia University. His teaching and research interests are in labor econometrics and inequality. He has also published several articles in the area of income distribution. of the campus does not care. Of the total 75 responses, 21 individuals said "no" to any secure system if offered on the campus; 16, seven men and eight women, said "yes" and the remaining thirty-eight responses said that more information is needed. Through the use of her slide show, Kwesi displayed visually documented proof of cultural fashion traditions introduced by ancient Egyptians and Moors that brought Europe out of the "Dark Ages", the plagiarism of African symbols, styles, and practices from ancient times to modem, and the treatment of her culture's elaborate fashions and adornments as insignificant fads in a Europeandominated fashion industry. Among the many stolen attributes to African fashion was the fur coat. In times long ago, the fur coat was used for keeping fleas off of the people. Bugs and such would go onto and into generally used wolf skin, then be brushed out or shaken out later. The fur coat was not a statement of fashion, it was a way to make life better. Hairstyles and makeup techniques were stolen, too, from the African culture. Make-up, for instance, was used to protect the eyes of people along the Nile. "Long before Fruit of the Loom, we had the drawers," said Kwesi, followed by a rally of applause. The loin cloth was worn in Africa before underwear was even thought of. Even the bustle W'IS stolen from African culture. "They even stole our butt," she said. Thirty-three agencies from Kenosha, Racine, and Burlington, ranging from the Girl Scouts of America to Southeast Wisconsin AIDS Project participated in the fair. The fair, which is held once a year, is geared toward recruiting students, faculty and staff into volunteer service and to create campus/community awareness of what services these agencies provide to the community. Senior Alaina Whitney states, "There is such a great need for volunteers." Volunteering for the past six years as a guardian for the Kenosha Guardianship Assistance Program, Whitney adds, "The greatest thing [about volunteering] is the satisfaction of knowing that you actually can make a big difference in individuals' lives." "A $2,000 cut would not be healthy for the newspaper next year," said Zahn Jacobson explained that budget increases and decreases are determined by how an organization's money was spent the previous year. Part of the rationale for the Ranger's decrease was problems with the salary. She stated, "There is enough money to work around with in the salary without a $2,000 miscellaneous salary." The miscellaneous salary would be set aside for next year's Editor-InChief and Managing Editor. Zahn argued that, "Considering the amount of time needed, and responsibility (with these two jobs), it is only fair that this amount of money be offered (for next year)." "Although people volunteer their time for the Ranger, many others cannot afford to, which discourages many people from participating at all," said Zahn. "If you want to have a student newspaper that is able to seriously report news on campus, you're going to have to spend a little bit more money (than what has been offered)." The outcome of the appeals have left Ranger's budget for next 'year with a $1,000 cut, instead of a $2,000 cut previously proposed by SUFAC. The Ranger News was the only organization to appeal their budget as recommended by SUFAC . I briefly ~onderedwho, what or if They were. The questions I had were so few in Umber that you could fit them all in a n . thimble and still have room left to spare. The complexity of my questions were also limited. I didn't seek answers because the concept of Him didn't seem to bother me one wayor the other. _ When I was eighteen He was back again in my mind. This time I was more curious about Him. My questions at the time were greater in number and were a little less conceptual. Iwas looking for some tangible answers. I didn't know where to turn. So, I met up with someone with whom I began to talk of God and of Christ. We went to church togetherand studied the bible together aodeven prayed together. My interest at the time, however, began to wean when she moved away to another city. I didn't push to know more. I dion't need to. I took my questions, which at die time were enough in number to fill my back pocket, and went along my merry way. He didn't really enter my mind again. Now, I'm twenty eight. He is back againand this time in a BIG way. My questions are so great in number that they could fill a football stadium and tbey are burning for answers. I've been wanting factual answers to very conceptual questions and getting conceptual answers to very factual questions. It's driving me crazy. I yearn to know for sure if there is a God. The concept really blows me away. I'm a "facts and figures" girl. Show me something concrete and I'll I I Ig s. ra 'r " I s, h I e II e be content. Give me quotes from the bible (a book which has no authors' name on the cover, i.e. how can I be sure of its validity) and then I feel even more empty. There have been so many injustices in my life as of late, medical problems and personal as well. It's been so overwhelming. And the lives of so many others are even far worse than mine. If He is real, then why does he allow so much pain? And, if sinners go to Hell, then I'm in BIG trouble because I could fill ten thousand football stadiums with all of mine, and that's just this week. Yet, my new friend Andy tells me that if I can just allow Christ into my heart and believe God's love that all of my sins will be washed away and that heaven will be mine. He's so certain of what he feels and knows about God. I wish I were him. You would think I would just say, "Yes, I believe!", knowing that it will get me all of this great stuff (a clean slate and a place in heaven). But I can't yet. I can't because no one has answered my questions to my satisfaction. This is the third time in my life I have corne to the table with questions. I've walked away without answers twice before. I don't want to walk away this time empty handed. I've got to settle this. I've got to know. I need to firmly believe one way or the other. I can't let another ten years go by. I'm making a real effort this time to understand. I've been reading up on the subject (Bible) and have gone to a few bible study meetings. Last week I attended an Intervar si ty Christian Fellowship meeting and felt like a fish out of water. Everyone was kind and welcomed me with open arms, that's not what alienated me from them. It was their certainty of Letters to the Editor Governor Tommy wanlS your cash Does anyone remember those campaign commercials featuring TommyThompson jogging along with happy kids all on their way to a good education, followed by the sloganThompson for Education? Those kids wereapparently not from Wisconsin. Thompson's mega sized budget plan hit the floor last week with a resounding thud. Although, to University students, it may have sounded like a bomb going off. The document itself was 3000+ pages long and contained suggestions, recommendations and plans that cover everypiece of life the state has control OVer.We really don't have the time to lookat the whole thing, so let's just see how it affects the student population. Tommy wants the UW-System to become more self-sufficient and less dependent on property taxes. This is not all that bad of a goal. Wisconsin ~s have a fairly high property tax rate ID comparison to other states. To that ~nd his plan cal1s for a percentage Increasein tuition for System schools in the 95-96 year and again in the 96-97 year. These increases would be 4.7% and 3.8% at Madison, 5,7% and 4.8% at Milwaukee and 6.1 % and 5.2% at all other UW comprehensives. These increases are on top of usual scheduled inflationary tuition increases and the technology fee increase. There is also a required cut of $10 million from the system from current system expenditures. Now, can someone explain to me why Milwaukee and Madison receive lower increases than all the other schools? And can we make an educated guess given that example of where the bulk of the cuts are going to come from? If these budget proposals are intended to make the system more self-sufficient, I think it would only make sense to apply the increases and cuts across the board, not to play political favorites with them. Not that I would ever accuse Gov. Tommy of using these cuts as political football, I'm sure that would never happen. But wait, there's more! Tommy also suggests a $40 tuition surcharge for 95- God and my lack thereof which kept me from them. Still I plan to give it another try. If any of you readers are interested in joining me you can fi~d me in the back of the room at the next meeting. Last night I went to bed angered and saddened with my struggle. I decided I was going to leave it all alone. I decided to just stop asking questions and looking for Him in my life. I decided that I couldn't give this subject one more day's thought. Then, this morning I woke up and He was the first thing that came into my mind. HE was back again. I couldn't make the question of Him go away this time like I'd been able to so many times before in my life. And He's here with me now. I feel like someone has placed some tormenting "spell" on me. I can't run away from my thoughts. I can't push them down any longer. They won't let me. I NEED to know. I NEED to understand. I NEED to believe one way or the other. Do you know what I mean? Any of you? Do you need to know too? If any of you are familiar with my struggle, let's talk about it sometime. Join me in bible study on Thursdays at 5:00 p.m. in Union 202. But at least for today, I know that I intend to keep searching. 96 and $80 for 96-97. These moneys are to be used to fund property tax relief. Well, I certainly can see where he got his reputation as a friend of education. It is one thing to make a plan that removes the educational burden from the property tax rolls, but is another thing entirely to place the property tax burden on the backs of the students. What we have here is another case of a politician shifting tax burdens from one area to another and calling it a tax cut. Yes, property taxes in Wisconsin are out of control. Yes, the UW System could be trimmed from the top and made to be more self-sufficient. No, this is not the way to do it. This budget plan will only speed the constant decrease in services that the System is already suffering. It will only discourage potential students from trying to get a college education. It will only sell the future for the price of good polls and a possible presidential campaign. Tyson Wilda Apology . One Llberal's Opinion by Barh Churchill Now that we're stuck with him (why, oh why, didn't voters see through this man?), Newt Gingrich (aka "His Obnoxiousness") used his influence as Speaker of the House to limit Presidential authority to send troops into foreign countries, appatently because he's tired of the UN taking 'advantage of our soldiers. (This was covered under one of the provisions of the "Contract with America.") Appearances can sometimes be deceiving, however. This violates the separation of powers principle inherent in our Constitution. Subsequently, Democrats could call this the "Contract on America." Limit presidential authority in all the ways that count, and call it nothing except "cutting waste." However, if the Congress really wanted to cut waste, they'd cut Gingrich's (and every other Congressman's) salary until the budget is balanced. (Oh, yeah, and no more raises either.) They'd also delete perqs, such as subsidized medical care, pensions for former Speakers (that run into the millions of dollars), and "complimentary" trips on federal planes for junkets to Jamaica. But, no, that would cramp their style too much. Instead, they say, let's limit presidential authority. Then it's a win/win scenario: taxpayers still blindly pay for the junkets, and the president looks like an idiot. The few Democrats left in Congress are fuming, but powerless. They can't stop Gingrich: he's a steamroller set on overload. Nothing sticks to this man; not his questionable book deal, not his messy divorce (when he claims to be a paragon of virtue.), and not his waffling on issues. However, when petty partisan bickering takes the place of debate on issues, the people must act. It's time to hold your Congressmen and Representatives accountable. Let our representati ves hear your voice on issues that matter, such as the baseball strike, the economy, foreign policy, crime, etc. (Write Gingrich some nasty letters too, but keep it polite.) It's time for our representatives in Washington to think of us for a change, and not just the next handout. An old proverb states, "May you get exactly what you deserve." Are we really receiving the best government, or only the government that we "deserve" due to voter inattention and apathy? Praise of the week goes to Baltimore Orioles owner, Peter Angelos, who is refusing to field a "team" of scabs (I mean, "replacement players.") It's nice to know some owners aren't morons. However, Outrage of the Week is shared by the baseball owners, who are attempting to fine or take Angelos' team away from him if he refuses to comply, and Tommy Thompson, who once again lowered the boom on students. You see, I am stealing my own idea and adapting it. to my opinion piece this week. No Comment: I was going to talk some more about race relations in this week's column. I have been asked to forgo doing so this week. Rest assured, I am not through with that subject. Tain't Funny: Last week, the Ranger printed the story of an incident in student housing. The incident is being investigated, I am told; I am further informed that man who left the noose over the bed thought it was only a joke-some joke. Hey, Mr. McClelland, joking about a noose to an African-American male is like joking with a Nazi twisted cross to a person of Jewish heritage- it just is not. funny. Perhaps everyone should take a history course on the subject of the African-American experience in the U. S. After all, it is Fehruary (Black History Month) and that makes it a perfect time. Engage your brain before you act next time. Dem's, We Owe You One: The Democratic party rendered this nation a great service recently by opposing the idea of a 3/5 supermajori ty requirement for tax increases. The Constitution does not allow for a supermajority in the case of revenue hikes . No, You Can't Have It: Private property rights used to mean something in this country. Recently, in the name of the government and the environment, that right has been steadily eroded away. Presently in Congress is a bill known as the Property Owners Bill of Rights. All this legislation does is restore the takings clause of the fifth amendment to its rightful place. Declaring a dry farmers field a wet land so that he may not sell it to a housing developer is an obscene abuse of law. There are examples after examples of the environmental police taking, or restricting, the legitimate (and I stress the word legitimate) use of private property. President Reagan was right in ] 983 when he stated, "Some environmentalists will not be happy until they have turned the clock back a hundred years and have a bird's nest instead of housing." I Feel Sick: Not surprising in this area. It seems those geniuses at the EPA have decided that a reformulated gasoline must be used in Wisconsin and other cities and states. Problem is-it makes people sick. The EPA, as you might expect, denies this (it is one of the truisms of a liberal, they never make a mistake or admit to one, and they always know better than you) Our Governor Tommy Thompson is willing to go to bat for his people and has ordered a state investigation. Tommy's In Charge: I know that several other writers in these pages do not like the current chief executive in Madison. I am, on the whole, quite pleased and comfortable with his leadership. The only mistake he is making is the way he wants to fund education in this state. To the letter writer whining about property tax relief: I own a house, if you did also, you might see the other side of the coin. Go Out To A Ball Game: Show those greedy players. If the Brewers and the Cubs are going to make baseball affordable again, then I'm going. Besides I want to see the players lose this strike. As I stated last week, Donald Fehr is one of the biggest anal retentives in the nation. ----'-------=======::=----=---=--=========::::======::::=:J True Talent rroet's Corne Sibling Rivalry. The heart of a family, the juice of competition, and the basis for Sam Shepard's True West. On February 20 I attended a dress rehearsal of UW-Parkside's performance of True West. It was thrilling. The performance accented the subtle complexities that two rival brothers feel for each other. Austin, performed by Chris Harder, is an up and coming Hollywood screen writer. His older brother Lee, performed by Maxwell Mount, is a petty thief and drifter. The two brothers are at odds in everything and when they come together to write a western the emotional tension explodes. Director Leon Van Dyke does an admirable job of presenting the little nuances of the characters, and the subtle yet hidden love that the brothers feel for each other. True West is a superb play and the UWParkside actors do an excellent job of presenting such complex emotions. The first public performance will be held on Fehruary 24-25. After that there will be performances on March 2-4. Due to limited seating individuals should call ahead for tickets. Chris's fingers produced a sound from his guitar that was so beautiful it made you melt in your chair. Lern's performance was no less of a beauty, his fingers caressed the guitar strings like long lost friends. Both guitarists produced a musical sensation that will surely take them far in whatever career they choose. Boys By Dawn Apostoli If y?U want a movie that will make you laugh one minute and cry the next, then you should see Boys On The Side with Whoopi Goldberg, Drew Barrymore, and Mary-Louise Parker. This movie is exceptional, enlightening, and definitely worth going to see- especially if you are a woman. Men will enjoy this film too, but it sort of seems like it's more of a woman's movie. The film starts out with Jane (played by Goldberg) planning to go to Los Angeles to pick up her music. career. She finds another woman Robin (played by Parker), wbo also has ' intentions of going to the West Coast. So, the two decide to car pool. Upon first glance, you see that their personalities clash a great dealJane is an outspoken, witty woman, while Robin is very timid and emotional. However, these characteristics do eventually intermix during the .course of the movie. On their way across the country, Jane stops in Pittsburgh to meet up with one of her good friends, Holly (played by Barrymore). A mishap occurs though. Holly is being beaten by her on the Side (****) boyfriend (Nick), and Jane tries, but fails, to stop him. Robin steps in and is able to control the situation for a little while with her quiet voice and meek actions. Nick is cooled down for awhile, but soon he's swinging the girls against the wall again. This time it's Holly's turn to put Nick in his place by beating him over the head with a baseball bat. While he's down and out (but still alive), they tie him up and head towards L.A. After a few days of good laughs and fun times, Holly decides it's time to return home to Nick. But, they soon see the headlines in the newspaper saying that a drug dealer (Nick) was found dead. Holly is stricken with guilt and sadness. This man may be the father of the baby she is carrying. The other girls are surprised to hear that Holly is eight weeks pregnant, but they each have their little secrets too. Jane, we find out, is a lesbian, and Robin tests positive for an extremely terrible disease. The girls decide not to report the "Nick Incident" to the police, so they continue westward and end up staying in Tucson where Holly falls in love with a man who happens to be a cop. What happens when she tells him about Nick? Will her boyfriend be faithful to the law V~e GJ3tac~eroioes this album of a million singers. Robinson is a vocalist who is able to incorporate a sense of real feeling into his singing. because of his extraordinary voice and feel, Robinson is probably one the best vocalists out there today, Amorica is a very well rounded album. It's an album that will start rockin', give you a groove to move to, mellow out into soothing sounds of a ballad. and then start rockin' allover again. A definite stand out is a song called "P, 25 London," This tune will catch your ear right away with the Hendrix-like guitar riff in the introduction, "Cursed Diamond" is one of the many songs with so much feeling, and such a catchy groove, that you may find yourself closing your eyes and letting the soul of this song soak into your own. It starts out as a gradual flowing groove and turns into a raw, and yet melodic, verse. The last song on the album, called "Descending:' shows off the talents of Hello our fellow readers. Here is the children's movie we promised and it is called Heavyweights. From the director of The Mighty Ducks comes the story of Jerry an 11- year old who is looking forward to a summer of Nintendo and hanging out with friends. Little does Jerry know, his parents have a better idea. I Since Jerry is a little overweight, his parents want to send . him to a camp for overweight children. Jerry objects at first until he sees the videotape of the go-carts and ''The Blob." and tum her in? Will he be faithful to her and keep her secret? Or is there a way he can be faithful to both? In the meantime, Jane is trying to make Robin's life happier and more meaningful by setting her up with a man. Robin resents Jane's helpfulness; therefore, their friendship splits up for a while .... until a mutual responsibility pulls them back together. There are episodes in the movie that are very humorous, very serious, and very depressing. It's not until near the end though, that you might have to struggle to hold back the tears. Almost every part of the ending is sad: Robin's mother's thoughts about how Robin will always stay with her (and not leave her like her son and husband did), seeing Robin with her skeleton frame and sickly face, and listening to Jane finish Robin's song while painful tears stream down both their faces. Not only was it me that found this movie to be so sad, but so did all the people in the theater who were sniffling and shedding tears. I really liked this movie, and hopefully you will find it as enjoyable as I did. So, I definitely recommend it for everyone who wants a good laugh and a good cry at the same time! piano player Eddie Harsch, This is a beautiful sounding song that combines a crisp piano with the sounds of smooth slide guitar, It is good example of what the Black Crowes, as a band, are really capable of. The result is more than satisfying. An album of this sort that contains so much soul, feelings, and grooves, is hard to put into words, Most importantly, it is probably best to be enjoyed rather than I described, My advice would be to listen for, yourself and create your own meaning from the feel you get from this album, That" s what Amorica is made up of - soulful feelings with a groove to move. The Rangers are now 5-18, while Olivet Nazarene improved their record to 13-11. The Rangers were behind at the half 39-30, but were able to get back into the game when Maci Persteiner hit a 3-pointer with 35 seconds left giving the Rangers a 74-72 lead. Olivet's Stacey Mann then hit a shot in the lane with 5/IO's of a second left to send the game into overtime. Mann had 23 points in all, and teammate Rochelle Durbin added 20. Parkside did win the rebounding battle 52-43, but were outscored in the overtime period 13-10. Leading the way for the Rangers was Heather Bogenschneider with 23 points, Pernsteiner added 19, and minutes, including last Thursday's overtime loss to NAIA powerhouse, Olivet-Nazarene. The main reason the team has hung close in so many games is senior Maci Pemsteiner. She is unquestionably the leader of this ball Maci Pernsteiner club. After a solid freshman year, Pernsretner struggled as a sophomore. But consistent work habits have shifted the spotlight to her outstanding play. She leads the team in scoring (15.3), assists (3.6), steals (2:4), and minutes (31.4). Miller considers her a model athlete. "She's playing the best basketball of her career and is great for the young kids. They all look up to her," said Miller. An explosive first step, physical strength, and her 887 career points will make Pemsteiner hard to replace. "I've worked the same as I always have. I have to put myself in their [the freshmen's] place and remember what it was like," said Pemsteiner. "We had a growing year my freshman year too." And how would Pemsteiner like to finish her career? "I'd just like to look back with no regrets. Four years have come down to 4 games. I'll miss it a lot," she said. The team remains confident about their future. ~ "I think we have a lot of potential," added Kassing. "Each year we will get better and better, so by our 4th year we'll be a great team." Pemsteiner forecasts a bright future for the team as well. She added, "They've gained a lot of experience that can't be replaced-close games." Coach Wendy Miller knew she had her work cut out for her after last season's mostly senior learn finished a respectable 12414. W d M'II Miller brought in a big freshman en y I er class this year, ten to be exact. The "tough ten," despite their lack of size, have kept themselves in games with their strength and hustle. Their determination is not accurately reflected in their 5-18 record as most the losses were deceptively close. "We're not measuring success by our wen-toss record, but rather by how much improvement we've made," said Miller. "We've got a very good group of freshmen." A freshman group that is led by Jenny Kassing. Kassing, a two-time All-Northwest selection in high school, has led the team in 3-poinl shooting (38%), rebounding (7.S), and is second in scoring (13.2) and steals (1.9). "[Having ten freshmen] doesn't affect us, because we've grown together and learned each other's playing style," Kassing said. Kassing, however, does admit to the Ranger's troubles in the post. "We're weak in the post, so we've had problems boxing out. But we have strong players like Amy Hurlebaus. We make-up [for the weaknesses] with our power and speed," added Kassing. The team's post dilemma is no secret to Miller and she is on her way 10 filling the void. "We've been out-rebounded, especially at the end of garnes. But we have three post-players signed or verbally committed for next season," Miller said. The Rangers have been painfully close to winning games all season. Rangers shocked by Northland Baptist The University of wisconsinParkside men's basketball team dropped a 80474 decision to Northland Baptist Bible College (NBBC) Friday night at the Physical Education Building on the UW-Parkside campus. The loss drops the Rangers to 12-12 on the season. UW-Parkside built a 14 point halftime lead, 43-29, and led by as many as 16 in the second half before NBBC began closing the gap. The score was 57-44 in the second half with I I :33 left in the game when NBBC went on a 14-0 run to lead 57- 58 with 7:25 left. The game was dose the rest of Ihe way with NBBC pulling away at the end by making their free throws. The Rangers were led by Levi Bradley who scored 26 points and hauled down 18 rebounds. Thadd Jacobs scored 19 and Craig Evans had 14 for the Rangers. No other UWMP player scored more than four points. NBBC closed the gap in the second half on the strength of 63% shooting while UW-P went cold shooting just 32% from the floor in the second half. Other matters discussed in the various committees ranged from privacy concerns to cuts in remedial education. Concerns regarding student privacy and the use of Social Security Numbers as student 10 numbers were addressed. lt was decided to look into using some other form of ID for students and to also try to limit the release of confidenri al student information as much as possible to protect student privacy. Proposed cuts in remedial education programs were student privacy. However, Wayland Baptist's Jodie Young shocked Haines by sprinting past her with just over two laps left. Haines has been the team's top 5000 meter runner all season, but stepped down to the 3000 to try to increase UWP' s team score. Valerie Niese took control early and won her first of two national championships in the mile with a time of 5:03.19. Colette Marotto also earned All-American status by using a Tracey Pope-like kick to finish 6th in 5:13.31. Niese had the fastest time going into the race, but she still wasn't totally convinced that she could win it all. "I wasn't worried about time. I just wanted to win;" said Niese. "It (the win) was a big relief. It didn't really hit me until later. " Niese raced aggressively, speeding up whenever she was challenged. Parkside finishes fourth in college bowl fashion. College Bowl has two types of questions: the ten-point tossups and the bonuses, which can offer a variable (5-30) number of points. Parkside's Hendrickson finished third in the individual competition in points earned on tossup questions, with 270 out of 7 rounds, answering 30 correctly, five incorrectly and one before being recognized. Carter earned 105 tossup points, Holmberg and Kane 85, and Von Dissen 10. The individual winner in total tossup points, John Carlino from Beloit, earned an astounding 470, with 52 correct and 10 incorrect. However, Carlino earned only 15 points in Beloit's match versus Parkside, the final one for both teams on Saturday. Parkside's win-loss record was 3·4. There are so many factors to look at for one decision. Fairness and equality for all students, campus outlook for scholarship bound student-athletes, and enrollment are among a few factors. "The Chancellor can do anything she wants to," Murin said. "[This] whole thing might be totally irrelevant." If enrollment decreases for next semester, all the meetings, open forums, and sleepless nights might be for nothing, because Chancellor Eleanor J. Smith may have no other choice but to have student-athletes who received scholarships pay segregated fees. Ideas are still being tossed. Scholarship funding from the UW- Parkside Benevolent Foundation is $112,368, a 6.6 percent increase over last year. Funding from the University is $22,000. The communication department's senior seminar class has decided to remedy the situation. After many class discussions, the students decided to develop and sponsor the first annual "Spring Fever 95." They've put together two days of fun that are guaranteed to be a blast. On Friday April 21, from 8-12 pm, the Union will be decked out and ready for the "Dress to Impress" dance. Volunteer of the week Students are selected as "Volunteers of the Week" by their altruistic attitudes, the amount of time shared within the community and the impact their service has made in the lives of others. This week's volunteer is Susan Boscher. Susan Boscher is a senior majoring in Psychology graduating in May with plans on working in Human Services. Susan became active in the Parkside Volunteer Program when she enrolled in September as a 2nd grade tutor at Bain Elementary School in Kenosha and later became a fast volunteer (Families & Schools Together) through the Alcohol & Other Drug Council of Kenosha. Sue thinks she has learned a lot by working in the FAST program. She stated, '" have seen how parents and chi Idren relate to Susan Boscher each other and how society has a huge impact on children. They can be influenced so easily. If parents can spend fifteen minutes a day with each child, communication and behavior can improve." Lori Capelli, Bain School teacher thinks Susan would be an excellent school counselor. She reported, "Sue is a great volunteer! She is genuinely interested in the students and they love her!" Reasons: I have been trying to implement changes to make PSGA work better for the students, but I don't think that these changes have been enough. While we are facing drastic cuts in student aid and funding to the universities, and while we are looking at negative policies imposed on the university system, the student government of UWP simply cannot afford to have leadership that is not its very strongest.
