The evaluation cornmitee met twice --Feb. 8 and Feb, 15, 2008--to go over the proposals. Some ofthe services the committee was looking for from companies included providing supplies in a timely manner as well as suppJying sufficient quantities of all required and recommended books and course materials. They also wanted companies to provide an enhanced selection of current trade, academic, and technical literature. The final decision was to hire Valadis Resources as the new provider. Valadis resources had to create a proposal and send it to a review committeee. The committee consisted of Rick Haskey, the Contract Administrator; Rhonda Kimmel, the company's drive to maintain competitive prices compared to other retail outlets in the area. Companies that wished to participate in the evaluation were required to send a typed. securely bound proposal prepared on standard 8.5 inch by j I inch paper. The proposal had to include a cover page, introduction, the company's information, response to technical requirements, cost proposal, and required forms -- an affidavit and designation of confidential and proprietary information. Follett Higher Education Group and Validis Resources were the two proposals for the committee to evaluate. The proposals were rated on a number scale, with 1000 points being a perfect score. Valadis Resources scored 908 points while Follett Higher Education Group (the former bookstore provider) scoring only 742 points. Rick Haskey, a member of the committee, said that Valadis Resources was a better choice than Follett Higher Education Group because "Valadis met the majority of criteria and fulfilled the expectations of the committee. The goal is to create a bookstore service program that meets the needs of a diverse student body, faculty, and staff." Presenting next year's Student President: Ted Ruffalo MOLLIE EGAN tree_fingers99@yahoo.com The next President of Parkside Student Government Association (pSG A) is Theodore Ruffalo, as Tony DuBose's term is up at tbe end of tbe current semester. Currently, Ted is ajunior at the University of Wisconsin- -Parkside, majoring in Political Science with a concentration in Jaw. Ruffalo intends to serve for the "maximum duration, with maximum effectiveness". Prior to and during the elections, Ruffalo got his name out to the student body by posting flyers all around the sebool, writing reminders to vote for him on the sidewalks in chalk, and speaking to student organizations on issues and concerns that are part of his platform. He wanted a personal approach with a strong visual element. As President of PSGA, Ruffalo intends to reinstate the Presidential Council. According to Ted, this would foster student organization interrelations, increase awareness, and open avenues of communication between organizations. Ruffalo wants to maintain 3 "streamline, but comprehensive. Constitution with strong bylaws". Along the same lines. he wants the legislature to be "clear, ccnsise, and user-friendly". Ted aims to follow in current President Tony Dubose's plan for "Major Status Organization criteria evaluation and consideration, through a committee". When asked about the Facebook groups and other anti- Ruffalo material that floated arou nd campus during the election week, he said with laughter "smear campaigns are always unfortunate, but.i.appreciate that students were taking an active interest in Parkside politics." • • A run to raise awareness ROBERT ROSATI robertrosati@hotmail.com MOLLIE EGAN tree_fingers99@yahoo.com A little over two years ago tragedy struck Doug De Vinny, the Interim Associate Provost and art professor at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, when his daughter. Alex, passed away at the age of 20. Alex suffered from the eating disorder known as anorexia. which eventually caused her death. Alex was an extraordinary competitor gifted runner and with this in mind, DeVinny's other daughters came up with the idea to "do something to sort of sustain her interest and memory and the idea was to do a ('We~ve got issues" race." Alex was a freshman in high school when her athletic prowess on the track field was evident: she set a record at the Tremper CC (Cross Country) invite in the 4K (kilometers) with a time of 14:04. At the Rebel Invite/Parkside CC Course, a 4K track, she set a record with a time of 13:54. Alex DeVinny set another record, that same year. At the South Milwaukee Invite held at Grant Park, when her time was an incredible 14:16 in a 4K race. She also earned first place in the following events as a high school freshman: Cross country sectional. track and field SE (South East) conference 1600 and 3000M (meters). track and field regional 1600 and 3200M. as well as in a track and field section 1600 and 3200M race. Alex's domination in track and field events continuedduringherjunior year of high school. She won four events that year: the cross country sectional, track and field regional 1600 and 3200M. track and field sectional 3200M, as well as the track and field state meet 3200 M. Alex enjoyed competing in the Lighthonse Run. Alex won the women's 4-mile race in back- to-back years in 2000 and 200 I. In 2001 she set a" course record with a time of 22:39, which still stands to this day. and Alex was posthumously inducted into the Wisconsin Runners Hall of Fame at the race in 2005. As Bob mentioned last week, I was out of town the weekend of the 19th and 20th. I went on a "mini-vacation", and in case you were wondering, It was a good time. I went on a road trip, saw a few concerts, and had a great time with some friends I don't get to see often. Anyway, I think Ryan Ashton, Josh Diefenbach, Bob The Ranger News Rosati, Ruth, and anyone else who pitched in while I was gone did a wonderfui job, and I thank them for their time and effort. I appreciate everyone stepping up to help make suee the paper was able to be sent to the publisher on time, while at the same time keeping the standard I have set for the paper this semester. Not too long ago, we recieved a new-ish iMac for our designer, Ruth, to use. I was hoping it'd be up and running by this point so she would be able to use the latest software and all that jazz, but unfortunately there is still some work to be done. We're still in the process of getting everything set up the way we need it, and incorporating the computer into our network in the office. My hope is that Ruth will be able to use it at least once before this semester is over. If not, she will be back in fall to use the new iMac and work her magic on the articles, photos, images, and illustrations we collect each week for the paper. THINGS TO DO April 29, 20~ Along with the new computer comes new software for us. We recently upgraded our design software to Adobe Creative Suite 3. Previously, we had been using CS I for our layout. This, unfortunately, bas created some problems when we transfer our files over to our art manager at the publishing company. However, Holly (the art manager) has been patient and helped us through some extra steps to make sure the files all transfer correctly. To think that there are only two more issues left in this semester (not counting this one) is crazy. T still can't wrap my head around the fact that this semester has flown by. I must say, I've learned a lot this semester, and I'm sure I will only learn more (and develop the skills I already have) in the next two years. Yes, you read that right--I intend on sticking around as Editor-in-Chief until I graduate in 2010. I iook forward to working with so many new people, both within and outside of the Ranger News. As we get even closer 10 t~ end of the semester, everyone' schedules seem to fill up rno and more each day. The Parks ide Student Government Association (PSGA) has taken note of this, and is working with the Computer Science Club (CSC) to come up with some solutions to this problem. "President Ruffalo feels that these suggestions are not only Practical, but entirety executable as well To ignore ,. , J!' ,I. l l' , , ' I UW-System resources RYAN ASHTON ashto001@uwp.edu Earlier this year, University of Wisconsin-System Library Directors collaboratively SUbmitted a budget request (known as a Decision Item Narrative or DIN) to the UW- System Budget Office to be COnsidered as part of a 2009- iOl.l . UW-System-wide budget nllialive. This proposal, called Advantage Wisconsin: Growing ~e Research Infrastructure 9 ibrary Component), sks-tbar million dollars be allocated to ~ UW-System Libraries for purposes of expanding the ~h infrastructures of all the -SYstem lihraries- including p Umversity of Wisconsin- arkside. These funds, should they be ~anted, will primarily be used t~ expand electronic resources ~ughout the libraries in the fe -SYstem. One important th:~re 111 this initiative is that Ibrary funds wouid provide these suggestions would be a detriment to all students and faculty at Parkside, both now and in the near future," states a press release written by Michael Riedlinger, the Public Relations Director for PSGA. According to the report compiled by the CSc. tbere are "relatively few access points, and several [or the access points] have , stability issues". The majority of the Communication Arts building does not have any wireless access, and several Computer Science classrooms also lack wireless Internet. The CSC feels that every classroom should have Internet access, so that students can "easily download a copy of their syllabi from D2L, check/submit assignments, and do research." In addition to· connectivity being sporadic, the UW-P wireless network is also very slow. "The campus is currently limiting traffic on the wireless network ... Traffic limiting causes the wireless network to be unusable", the CSC report explains. The classrooms on campus with hardwired Internet connections have a speed of IOMbps (megabits per second), whereas the Computer Science Department has a connection speed of IOOOMbps. "This creates a bottleneck for the wireless network as well, because the campus wired network is often slow during the day. This problem is also due to the current networking equipment's inability to satisfy the Current demand from students," according to the report. Most of the wireless access points on campus are far slower than what the current consumer market uses, at II Mbps. This is a problem because students have to sbare the available bandwidth. If UW-Parkside upgraded their hardware, the wireless network would be accessible in more places, move faster, and would be more reliable. How does the CSC suggest UW-Parkside resolve this issue? The report suggests replacing the current access points. "Most Parkside classrooms currently have an Ethernet drop, therefore it would be simple and inexpensive to buy consumer hardware for high-traffic rooms and areas ... It is also expected that this increased versatility in electronic resources will attract high caliber faculty members to institutions like UW- Parkside, These high caliber researchers, coupled with the proposed technological advances, should expand opportuntues for bothJJW-l'arkside and otleer UW- System students to participate in cutting-edge research. This initiative is especially important for the smaller UW- System institutions like UW- Parkside. Electronic resources, as they continue to become mo~e viral for competitive academic research, are also becoming increasingly expensJ:e. I don't know where this year went , honestly. J started working at The Ranger News last semester as a copy editor, got bumped up to Executive Editor (to be trained to be Editor-in- Chief next schooi year), and by The Ranger News May 6, 2008 e time this semester started, I was Editor-in-Chief. It sounds cliche, I know, but it does seem like just yesterday that I walked into this office as a somewhat shy kid wanting to get involved on campus. Since then, I've really come out of my sbell. I've sharpened my skills at probiem solving and making decisions on tbe fly (for the times where I have iittle information to go off of). I'm better at speaking in front of a group, and speaking to people I don't know. I am better at asking for help, even though I still think I can do everytbing myself. And while I admit J have a temper, working here and dealing with some frustrating moments has actually helped me keep it in check better than I used to be able to. I'm more organized, and T try and stay on top of everything as best I can. I am more motivated to get work done, regardless of whether it's school work or newspaper work. I know there's still ways I can improve, though. r need to THINGS TO DO work on the way I conduct our staff meetings every week--I try to keep them lighthearted, but serious enough that everything gets accomplished. I think I can strike a better balance between the two, however. I'm sure our staff meetings could be more productive, and it's up to me to find a way to make them that way. The long hours on weekends (yes, I and several others do work on the weekends!) have been grueling at times, but I think they've paid off. [ am happy with the way the paper has improved this semester, and I look forward to seeing what next semester brings us. You may think "well, once school's over, she'll have a break". Not entirely true, as much as you and I both wish it were. We are moving to the Student Union at some point in the near future, so we have to pack up our office supplies in order for the move. I'm working on putting together a staff handbook, creating both documents from scratch and incorporating pieces from our older staff handbook. The constitution needs some revision as well. [' II be coming up with story ideas for our first fall issue and ideas to use for the rest of the fall semester. The Ranger News never really stops functioning, school or no school. The only time it actually stops is when peopie (either the staff or the students who read it) stop caring about it. I made this letter more about me than I intended, but I think that's okay. The Search-and-Screen committee is largely composed of faculty, butalso includes academic staff, students (either picked by the school's student government or the President of the University of Wisconsin System), adlllinistrators, and community members. The chairperson of this Committee is a faculty member. The process of finding a new Chancellor can take anywhere from 6 to 10 months from start to finish. Since the process is so lengthy, the Search-and-Screen committee broke it down into four phases. As the applications come in, the committee members evaluate them and any other documents attached to the application. They check with the applicant's references, calling them. writing them. or meeting with them face to face. Once the committee narrows the pooJ down to 8 to 12 applicants. they conduct interviews. Those who "pass" the interview are added to a "short list" of suitable applicants. The "short list" contains no fewer than fi ve candidates. and they are. listed in no particular order. After the "short list" is completed, the second phase can begin. And so begins another semester at the U ni veristy of Wisconsin-Parkside: the frantic search for a parking space, standing in long lines in the bookstore, scanning the classroom for familiar faces, exploring the new Student Union, and the seemingly endless amount of activities to check out during the first weeks of school. Student organizations have been gearing up for a new year as well, The Ranger News included. We've been doing some rearranging: we've cleaned up our office, which has given us a more efficient and useable space; we've renamed and reorganized some job titles; and we've had some staff members fill in the gaps left by those who graduated last semester. As 1 mentioned in May, Mollie Egan has stepped up and is now our Executive Editor and News Editor. Zak Smith is now our Marketing Director and will continue to be a photographer with us. Zak and Mollie, along with Ruth Briones (our Head The Ranger News Designer) and I make up The Ranger News executive board for this year. Another project for The Ranger News has been getting our website up and running so that everyone has access to our issues online. The UW- Parkside Police Department worked with Risk Management, University Relations, the Vice Chancellor of Administrative and Fiscal Affairs, the Dean of Student Services, Residence Life and the Chancellor's office worked together to create the new alert system named "Ranger Alert". The group met' on a regular basis beginning in November 2007 where different departments managed development of each aspect of theplan. The UW-Parkside Police and Public Safety Department willoperate the system. When an emergency is declared, the police department personnel will send outeach of the following: mass emails, text messages to all student and faculty cell phones (that have text messaging capabilities), voice messages toall campus phones including housing, pop up messages to all computers logged onto the university computer system, voice announcements within the academic complex, the SAC and Ranger Hall, announcements over all outdoor emergency phones and there will be a posting of the emergency on the UW-Parkside web page. There have already been twotests of the system as well as Use during several tornado watches and warnings in June. The committee will meet again next week to discuss a possihle test of all phones this semester. UW-Parkside only had to purchase the software for the computer pop-ups, which was approximately $2000. The Police Department funded the purchase of the pop-up software. Brevient Technologies offers free text messaging and voice messaging to universities and colleges. UW-Parkside will be using this company for the voice messaging on campus. UW-Parkside will hegin a marketing campaign very soon to have faculty, staff and students sign up to receive cell phone text messages in case of an emergency. Campus Technology sent out an email to all students about the Ranger Alert, asking students to sign up for the text messaging. The Police Department will have a booth at the Student Organization Fair, Sept. 17, and Community Day, Sept. 22, in Main Place for students to sign up online. To sign up for the Ranger Alert students have to go to their Solar accounts and in the Personal Information section, click on Emergency Notification - Opt. in. They then have to put in their cell phone number and click the "emergency opt. in" box. Lastly they have to click the save button. Once this is done, the student will get any of the alerts that are sent through the Ranger Alert system. The Police Department strongly suggests that everyone who has text messaging capabilities on their cell phones should sign up for the Ranger Alert. Teams or individuals compete against each other by earning points on a weekly basis for healthy activities such as exercising, eating well and overall wellness. It's a fun, informative way to learn how to improve your overall health. This year's Ranger Well ness Challenge starts on Oct. 6. The Ranger Wellness Challenge is trying to get people to turn simple lifestyle changes into lifelong, healthy habits. It is also trying to help improve and maintain the health of the UW-Parkside community. The Challenge wants to empower participants to take charge of their health and to improve the quality of life for all participants. To participate in the Ranger Wellness Challenge, students, staff, and faculty should sign- up between Sept. 15 and Oct. 10. Teams consist of four people with one team member acting as captain. Support for these programs comes in four ways: training mentors, training professional staff, certification for the programs, and recruitment. Mentor Kenosha & Racine defines mentoring as "a structured and trusting relationship designed to offer mutual guidance, support, and encouragement aimed at developing compassion, competence, and character" . Between the two counties, over 75 mcnroring programs strive to accomplish this goal. Thankfully, things are picking up around here. We're getting closer to a solid staff list for the semester, which means our issues should start to be much more consistent in terms of content and length. Everyone's gotta start someplace. Campus activities are increasing in number. which means we will have a harder time keeping up with everything. This also means that we will rely more and more on you, the readers, to inform us of an event coming up that we may otherwise miss. The goals for this semester SLICEr are to stay on top of the news on campus. Fortunately, Plan B emergency contraception is now available for students at the University of Wisconsin - Parkside, Sandra Leicht, the Nurse Practitioner at the Student Health and Counseling Center (SHCC), took the initiative to make sure students at UW-Parkside had the chance to get Plan B. Students had been asking for the pili to be at UW-Parkside and Leicht obliged them by adding Itto tbe list of over-the-counter medications tbat the SHCC orders. It will cost students $35 togetPlan B at the SHCC but, as farasLeicht knows it is cheaper thangelling it at a Walgreen's. "Plan B" Leicht said, "Is most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected vaginal intercourse." Plan B works by giving the body a short, high, burst of a synthetic hormone (Levonorgestrel, a hormone used in birth controJ pulls for over 35 years), which disrupts hormone patterns needed for pregnancy. Plan B may be effective up to 12!l hours (5 days) after intercourse, but it is most effective within the first 24 hours. Plan Bean reduce the risk of pregnancy by 75-89%. Leicht says that Plan B should not be used as regular birth control, and she adds that other birth control methods are much better at keeping a woman from becoming pregnant. Students can go to the SHCC and meet with a nurse or the nurse practitioner where everything is strictly confidential. The nurse will ask a few questions to make. sure that the girl is not allergic to the medication and to make sure they need the medication. Leicht says that students should consider certain things before they go to the SHCC ro obtain Plan B or for any visit a student might make, She said that students should write down any questions they have in advance, to prevent forgotten questions. Leicht also said that students should feeJ free to take notes during their visit. She explained that students shouldn't be afraid to speak up; "If you don't understand something, ask to have it explained again. Ask all the questions you need to and don't leave without understanding everything you have been told." Leicht stressed that students should be honest about themselves, and said that students shouldn't be embarrassed to describe their symptoms. health and sexual history. Alexander Sascha Mandl was the violist who bas earned notable recognition amongst many orchestras and symphonies including: Concertmaster Fieldhouse. Alvaro Garcia. the Associate Professor of Music at lJW-Parkside, was the. skillful hands behind the violin. The first piece they performed together gave a nostalgic flair of social gatherings. such as a wedding and one cou Id i magi ne the twirling of white lace.' and the throwing of bouquets. It didn't take long for the audience to see that these two gentlemen were highly skilled and capable of fluidity. When Carl Starnitz's (the song's original composer from the early nineteenth century era) sophisticated melody ended, Dr. Mandl and Mr. Garcia received much applause from an admiring audience. After a brief two-minute pause, Dr. Mandl retired "backstage", while Mr. Garcia returned with Alejandro Alumbreros, a pianist not unfamiliar with the University of Wisconsin- Parkside; he has often held nooo recitals and has received a Masters in Music at Carnegie Mellon University. Mr. A1umbreros clearly showed his skills on the piano as he and Mr. Garcia performed "Harold in Italy". composed by Hector Berlioz in the late nineteenth century. The song had energetic explosions both expressed by the piano and viola and then it would sink into a melancholic? meditative state, only to rush back up in a surge of newfound energy. It was an instrumental anthem of the seasons of youth. After the gentlemen eased into a softened end to an adventurous tune, the audience responded with rapid applause; as if the song had given them an unknown source of enthusiasm. To bring the concert to a close. the masterful musicians chose to play ".!lip Pieces Op. 83". composed by Max Bruch in the late ll\neteej,1th Cdltury. Prom trilling out tunes of ecstatic days, to the solemn, sober dirges of tragedy, chamber music may as well be JIesh and blood walking around upon lands far and near. These are all very strong words, and for a reason. The one I want you to think about is "power". Alone, we have none. We are the scattered student body of a small Wisconsin University. We mayor may not vote, so why should anyone, especially politicians, care? Many of you likely think we are powerless, we are not. One of my favorite anecdotes from U.s. History is the one where Ben Franklin brought a bunch of twigs into the assembled, but certainly not unified, Conti- nental Congress. He picked up one of his sticks and broke it. Then he bundled the remaining thirteen, and showed that he could not. From this we get the phrase "united we stand, divided we fall". It holds water for us even today. On October 8th, a mere week away, we have the opportunity to do something unprecedented that will send a message to politicians across the country. We have power, and we know it. By getting out and voting early, we can illustrate that we are not only able to uphold our civic duty, but that we are fervent in our desire to participate in our own welfare and well-being. Next week, we will announce to the surrounding cities, our state, and our country that we want to be heard and that our opinion matters, but it only works of we do it together. JOKIRST jo@therangernews.com Due to the unsuccessful search for a new Chancellor at the University of Wisconsin- Parks ide, an Interim Chancellor was picked by the University of Wisconsin System to temporarily fill Chancellor Keating's place. The UW System asked Dr. Lane Earns to step up and temporarily lead UW-Parkside, until a permanent Chancellor is found. The Ranger News got a chance to sit down with Chancellor Earns and ask him a few questions so that the campus as a whole can get to know him better. Dr. Lane Earns was born and raised in Michigan, and went to Michigan State University to obtain his undergraduate degree in high school education, focusing on history. Right before he graduated, he spent two months in Japan as part of a study abroad program, which eventually changed the direction of his studies. He returned from Japan one year tater. Earns was one of seven American picked to return to Japan, where they went to different parts of Japan to help teach English in Japanese schools. Earns went to Nagasaki for one year as part of this program. Today, that program is called the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme (JET program). and has around 6,000 members. Chancellor Earns then went to the University of Hawaii for his Masters degree in Asian Studies, and then went back to Japan to teach English at a women's college, He returned to the University of Hawaii to work towards his PhD in Japanese History. He won a Japan Foundation Dissertation Grant, which allowed him to conduct his dissertation research at the University of Tokyo for one year. He spent two more years in Nagasaki while finishing his degree. In 1987, he went to the University of Wisconsin- Oshkosh, and was a professor of world history and Asian American history. Eventually, he became the chair of the history department. In 2002, he became the Associate Vice Chancellor, and in 2004, he served as the Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor. In 2005, he served as the Provost and Vice Chancellor, and stated in that position until coming to Parkside in Aug. 2008. In 2008, he was asked by the University of Wisconsin System to fiJI the position of Interim Chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. and accepted the position. Earns remarked that the position "seemed like an important job, and something that my particular abilities would he able to help". Dr. Earns was familiar with the UW System, having been part of Oshkosh's campus for years, and he knew several people from Parkside who helped fill him in with information. To him, it seemed like an excellent chance for leadership, and an "opportunity not only to help the system but to be part of a very strong campus", Earns thinks that Parkside is a beautiful campus, and he couldn't have been welcomed any better. A lot of work was put into the Chancellor's house near campus to make it livable- -the house needed some general maintenance. in order to be brought back to top form. He has had "nothing but good things to say" about his experience thus far. Parkside is a smaller campus than he's used to, bUI he finds that a smaller campus allows him to get to know more people and get to know those people a Littleeasier. Amethyst Initiative? First, it meant that he believed that "we -need to a serious, sustained, unfettered debate about how closely public policy- -specifically the drinking age-- and the reality of tife in campus community are aligned" .As such, Keating signed on to participate in a nation-wide discussion of this issue. and to explain the place of alcohol in our own campus community. Why name it the "Amethyst Initiative"? "Amethyst" is derived from two Ancient Greek words: "not" (a-), and "intoxicated" (methustos). Illustrious painting material! Might I add to the list turkeys, elephants, and babies being born straight at you? If this sounds like it's up your alley, hop on over to our very own art gallery, which happens to be featuring a dual show by Benjamin Swallow Duke and Teresa Dunn! Both artists have used oil paint to depict social interactions, in scenes that range from ecstatic to shocking. Through the manipulation of their environments, Duke and Dunn convey interesting realities. Benjamin Swallow Duke, a Kentucky native, has a very gestural style of painting. In "Permanent City Catastrophe." viewers see a graphic and chaotic city street, abound with individuals tbat are puking, shooting at one another, juggling junk food, and toppling boxes threatening to fall. A sense of unbalance and angst pervades, while barf, blood, and birth relate a shocking human truth- violence and the dirtiness of simply being human is relevant everyday, on every street. In a seamless flow to the nex.t artist. Teresa Dunn enables you to see into each figure's thoughts, making you feel .like a visual eavesdropper. Object and intimate human interaction is relayed in rich. painterly manner. She plays with reality, packing her interior scenes with seemingly unrelated figures, such as a baked goose, a real goose, and a figure lying behind-up on a doctor's table. Objects seem to move due 10 the interplay of lights and darks, mingled with roiling texture. You can feel her working the brush marks in an incredibly physical way, leaving passionate marks that can really stand up on their own two feet. Instead of being smoothed over, they are read on several levels as being part of a process. While Duke hegs the question, "Is this the way the worJd is in this work?" Teresa Dunn "delves into a world where animals. food and other objects are important as human characters." These two masterfully appropriate ambiguous images and assemble them into something chaotic. Come take a gander and bring your own sense of reality. Even after centuries of our forefathers figbting slavery. it still exists in this free country. Over half a million people suffer from this sinister, underworld crime; half are children and the scariest fact of all may be that much of America doesn't even know its ex.istence. This crime is called human trafficking. Human trafficking is the illegal transportation of people into other countries of which, they are forced to become sex toys, prostitutes, domestic slaves, soldiers or unwilling organ donors. These victims are mostly women and children from poor, uneducated countries who are given these false ideas of prosperity, stardom, or a loving home. -And tragically, these naive innocents are thrown into a sludge pool of physical and mental abuse, deception and loss of self-image. How can so many people be trapped in the nightmarish whirlpool of human trafficking and hardly anybody brings up the subject in newspapers or television? It's quite simple: the victims have too much fear and not-enough communication skills to get help. As stated before, most of the women and children are from developing countries such as Latin America, Africa, and the former Soviet Union, India and Asia. They never learned English or know very little of it and so they become easy prey for the traffickers. Another reason is that in other countries, women and children aren't valued as highly as men and so they are expendable. And when they become enslaved, the traffickers "season" them by gang raping, beating and psychologically degrading them until their humanity breaks. II's a horrible way to live and .die. Fortunately, there are people who have been abJe to see the grotesque tumor on America's back; people like Guadalupe Vidales, Gina Allende, and Darius Alernzadeh, who have the passionate dream of spreading the word about human trafficking and finding ways to put an end to it. These three spoke at the human trafficking meeting on OCL 8 at the University of Wisconsin- Parkside. They revealed that there are many different types of human trafficking: child soldiers, sex trafficking, domestic service. organ trafficking, illegal adoption and forced marriage. Children soldiers, where innocent children are raised to shoot weapons and serve in the miJitary, are the least in demand. while sexual exploitation is at its highest._ Guadalupe Vidales. assistant professor for the study of criminal justice, explained that Thailand openly embraces prostitution as a sturdy pillar of their economy. Many parents sell their children to pimps; disillusioned by the pimps' positive speeches of how their children will become very successful and rich. Other times, parents just sell their kids for the sake of drugs or becoming debt free. She also said that the police force there is hardly protection because they're paid off by the pimps to allow their girls to cross borders that would be otherwise illegal to do. With a country like that, it's no wonder why these girls feel trapped, helpless, and alone. After the meeting was done, I was able to speak to one of Professor Vidales' students and volunteer to study human trafficking across the globe. Her name was Amanda, a senior at Parks ide, and she decided to study domestic violence-a branch off of criminal justice-and that eventually led her to the subject of human trafficking. Her desire grew exponentially and it became her dream to see this issue brought to light by the media and even in today's politics. "I think it's sad that not many people know that this is going on." Amanda said to me. The smell of fresh popcorn with six different seasoning salts for toppings drew many a sweet tootb to the event. Main Place of Wyllie Hall became a Wonka- like cornucopia of sugar: two different flavors of cotton candy, ice-cream floats, and a chocolate fountain with apples. pretzels, and cake to drown in it. All these treats filled the bellies of many students. A blueberry pie-eating contest took place earlier at the event and got a few laughs. We even had a model dressed up as Willy Wonka that was handing out toothbrushes to help prevent cavities. At Snakes Alive you could sign your team up for the dodge ball tournament, and you could make a guess of . how many Nerds were in a jar. Whoever guessed correctly won an iPod. Overall the kickoff was a success and made us look forward to Fall Fest events to come. This bumped the Rangers down to a 6-12 record overall and a 2-7 record in the conference, while raising Southern Indiana's record to 9-10 overall and 3-6 in the conference. A real factor in the game's outcome were two costly sets that actually fell negative for the Parkside Rangers. Addie Kramer of the Rangers still managed 13 kills, 4 aces, and 3 blocks on the game. Along with her contribution, Kristin Schmidt managed 8 kills, I ace, and 2 blocks in an attempt to resurrect the Rangers. This was a crucial The University of Wisconsin- Parks ide Rangers were upset by the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles in Oct. 4's women's volleyball game. This was all part of the Great Lakes Valley Conference women's volleyball match in the DeSimone Gymnasium at Parks ide. Although the Screaming Eagles pulled away with a victory on the first set of 25- 19, the Rangers came back with a vengeance in the second set clinching a 25- 19 victory. Unfortunately for the Rangers, Southern Indiana didn't hesitate to lock up the next two sets at 25-18 and 25-14. The third staple in the Parkside momentum. However, Meg Bushman of Southern Indiana countered much of the Rangers offense with 7 blocks along with 11 kills, making it for a tough game. "I didn't feel as comfortable this race as [ have in weeks past," said Heidi after her race. She shaved off twenty-three seconds from her time on this same course only three weeks ago. The story was similar for third place runner, Hope Christie, who ran twenty- nine seconds faster than she did three weeks ago. She crossed the line in 19:30, the 31st college athlete. Also competing for Parkside was Angie Adams who ran 19:57 and Heidi Andersen who finished in 20:37. The Ranger women finished 5th out of 31 teams and only ten points out of 2nd place. Nationally ranked D.II and NAIA teams dominated the team championship standings. Ferris State University scored a meet low 98 points followed by Indiana Tech with 159, Indiana Wesleyan with 185, Aquinas College with 194 and UW-Parkside with 195 points. On the men's side of the venue, lone senior, Rob Hansen was the only UW-Parkside competitor in the 5,000-m race. He finished in 32nd 'place. Because Parkside only fielded one athlete, they were incapable of scoring. In the 8,000-m race, the Ranger men finished 5th place out of 28 teams. Indiana Tech University scored 36 points to capture the victory followed closely by Aquinas College who scored 68 points. Fresno Pacific University, coming all the way from California, staffed a third place finish, scoring 122 points. They were closely followed by Indiana Wesleyan with 153 points and the UW-Parkside Ranger men with 185 points. This was Parks ide 's best finish at the Lucian Rosa Invite in four years. The individual race was dominated by Cameron Walter of Indiana Tech winning by 28 seconds. His finishing time was 25: 14. Parkside's top finisher The University of Wisconsin- Parkside men's and women's cross-country tearns hosted the Lucian Rosa Invite on Saturday October 11,2008 on the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course. This event featured four races; the women's 4,OOO-m and 5,000-m and the men's 5,000-m and 8,000,m. Early morning temperatures hung .in the mid-Sus and led most to believe it would be a crisp autumn cross country morning, but as the sun rose through the October sky, so did the temperature, which peaked out at 70 degrees with the sun beating down forcefully. The women's 4,OOO-m was controlled by Lindenwood University and UW-Parkside. The race was dominated by Francine Nzilampa of Lindenwood University, who finished in 14:36. The first UW-Parkside finisher was Whitney Olson who crossed the line in 15:49. Jessica Enderby was the next Parkside finisher at 15:57. Jennie Kindt, Amber Mc.clure and Kim Degener ran step for step, side by side from the middle of the pack toward the front passing nearly twenty runners each to finish l lth - L3th all at 16:04. It was very exciting to see the Ranger women's split squad run so successfully and finish so close together. The women's 5,000-m run was a little more star-studded. Senior Jessica Monson competed in her final home meet at UW- Parks ide. bringing home a sensational second place finish. Her final time was l7:42. The winner, Justyna Mudy from Shorter College, ran a 17:26 5K. She took control of the race from the gun and extended her lead as much as twent¥ seconds during the race. Heidi Ertl, a junior from Marshfield, WI, finished 15th among collegiate runners, . " w.as Rehan Mahmood, who ran a course personal-best time of 26:26. ·When The Ranger News spoke with Rehan after the race he explained that he was surprised by the team's fifth place finish: "Initially, when I looked at our times, I didn't think we had run very strong as a team, so when I saw the team scores, I was pleasantly surprised." When asked about his personal performance, he commented, "I was happy to overcome the less-than-perfect conditions. Hopefully my teammates and I can keep up our momentum." Other Ranger scorers were Ben Orvold in 27:00, freshmen Alex Mena and Sam Albrecht running 27: II and 27: 14 respectively, and Dustin Baldwin who crossed the line in 27:38. The Ranger News also caught a word with sophomore Bryan McLoone after the race. "I ran faster than three weeks ago, but it certainly wasn't my best effort," was McLoone's opinion on the event. Mcl.oone added that he was in desperate need of water midway through the race, on his second ascent up the "giant, green llill." The Rangers had a successful day on the cross-country course, as they gear up for the post season. The men have the week off, where as the women will travel to UW-Oshkosh for the Brooks Invitational at Lake Breezey Golf Course next Saturday afternoon. Tbey will do this by collecting existing GIS data, integrating other spatial data into GIS, and using Global Positioning Systems (GPS) technology to collect additional data. Students involved in this project include Justin Chappelle, Michelle Dolnik, and Cory Tussler. When Ward was asked what be expected from the project, he said, "Two things, 1 expect the students will learn to develop, manage, and complete a GIS project. I also expect the students to develop a connection to the neighborhood." The data collected will be used to produce a neighborhood atlas showing the assets within tbe area. If something comes up and a reporter can't get their article in by deadline, I have been able to work something out with that reporter so that we still have an article, but they get some extra time to finish it. I think this works well for everybody. Along the same lines, we're slowly but surely improving our content as well. Now that we have some reliable reporters, we are able to cover more events and issues each week. Coming up we'll have an update on PSGA and what's happening with them, information on the Green Bike Project, more student organization profiles, an interview with UWPPD, and more things that I can't really think of right now. We're looking to give The Ranger News something fresh. At our last staff meeting, we tossed around some ideas. Some of these are plausible, some are a challenge but might work, and some (unfortunately) are just out of the question. So now I ask you guys. What would you like to see in future issues of The Ranger ou News? Some puzzles? More comics? More reviews of movies, restaurants, videogames? Recipes that are quick, easy, and healthy? Riedlinger last semester I wrote an editorial piece for the Ranger News about why you should give a damn about Student Government. I don't know how many people noticed, but I know Theodore Ruffalo did. Now he's president of the Parkside Student Government Association, and he and Senate have made it my job to make sure you, our fellow students, understand what they are doing and why it matters, so here it goes. First, it's important to understand what PSGA isn't. The Parkside Student Government Association is not like your high local school student council. coming up with dumb fundraisers just to keep busy. PSGA is not a political science club, nor does it care what major you have chosen. It is also not a closed-session, clandestine organization looking to pull one over on anyone. PSGA is a state-mandated organization under Wisconsin Statute 36.09(5). In essence, the State law grants students of any given institution of higher learning the right to actively participate in the governance and policy development of their school. It also grants the organization the right to collect and distribute fees to support student activities on their campus. These fees currently run about $5,000,000. In short, PSGA is the means by which all of you have a say in what goes on at UW-Parkside, and how the University is run. That's right; we all have a hand in saying who runs this place and what food we eat. We help decide the difference between academic probation and academic suspension. When the University needs a new Chancellor, we help decide who that person is. PSGA is your 'direct line'to the powers that be. If you want Parkside to recognize more transfer or life experience credits, there is probably a committee that decides what is recognized, and PSGA is your conduit to that group. If you have a brilliant solution to all the parking problems on our campus, but can't get anyone in the admtnistratlon to listen to you, PSGA is there to help make your brilliant idea known, and if it is judged to be truly sound, bring that idea to fruition. Look, you could easily sit by the entire time you're attending UWP and never know what PSGA does, but there are some who are trying to change that, and this article is one of those steps. Now the ball is in your court. Are you sick of the food on campus being so expensive? Come to PSGA and help decide what the criteria for our food service provider should be. Tired of our school getting bad press for choosing a guy under a federal investigation to be our next Chancellor? Come to PSGA and help find the right person for the job. You have the power. In fact, we all do! It's within your grasp, if you choose to take that next step and get involved. Parkside Student Government Association meets every Wednesday from 5-6pm in Greenquist 103. Hit a meeting or stop by their office across from Wylie Market and take a hand in the present and future of your University! The Ranger News October 21, 2008 Men's Soccer roller coaster on the rebound ROB HANSEN hanse082@uwp.edu men's soccer team hosted -a pair of ties against conference rivals Missouri S&T and Drury University. The game versus Missouri S&T, contested on Oct. 10, ended scoreless. On Oct. 12, the Drury game was 4-4. The Ranger men dug themselves a seemingly overwhelming 4-0 hole. By halftime, the Rangers were down three goals. Midway through the second half, Drury added another goal. Spencer Bursten, freshman midfielder, tallied two goals over a 100 second span nearly an hour into the contest. Renaldo Vega, senior midfielder, added another goal nearly 70 minutes into the contest, to inch the Rangers closer. trailing 4 -3. In the closing stages of the game. the poised Ranger squad, with an assist from Ben Kreple, was able to set up Dave Mercer in front of goal w.ith_ less than one minute remaining. His game tying goal would be the game's final goal as the two teams battled through two overtime sessions before ending in a 4-4 tie. The Ranger men have three . more games until the GLVC tournament, which begins the first week of November. Their final two games will be played at home, at the Wood Road Soccer Field. They will play host to Southern Indiana and Kentucky Wesleyan, Jonny BeBeau, a sophomore forward, commented, "Our record does not reflect our team's abilities. I think we can beat anyone in the GLVC tournament, and we have as good of a chance as anyone to win the whole thing." He added that some of the upperclassmen leadership, The University of Wisconsin- Parkside men's soccer team has had quite the roller coaster season. The men have been unable to string a pair of wins together since their 3-0 start back in' late August and early September. Since then the men have jostled back and forth between wins, losses and ties with their current record at 5-3-3 overall and 2-3-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC).
