Including UW-Parkside students, over 425 campus leaders gathered from UW-Milwaukee, UW-Madison, UW- LaCrosse and UW-Stout. The event was sponsored by the Parkside Student GovemmentAssociation (PSGA), the Black Student Union (ESU) and Latino Unidos. The theme of the conference was build- ing diversity through understanding and education. In order to convey this message, the weekend was made up of classes, a dance, speakers from the surrounding com- munities and a final Rally for Diversity lead by Corey Mandley, president of PSGA. While attending the sessions, participants tackled issues like "Responding to Hate Crimes,'! "Creating a Safer Campus," and "Gender Roles in the Black Community." According to Mandley, one ofthe orga- nizers of the event, the weekend was highly successful. "The conference brought a lot of people of different cultures together to learn," stated Mandley. The money in question is part of the Board of Regents proposed 1999-2001 biennial budget. Josiah Redford, a sophomore with intentions of majoring in Political Science and minoring in Business, a member of the Chancellor's Task force .. He is also a PSGA senator and director of Academic and Student Affairs, and has been work- ing on the petition since early October. In addition to the petition, which can be found in the Advising Center, Redford will be asking the Chancellor to write a letter to the Governor to support the cause. "My first experience with advising left a lot to be desired," said Redford. "It left me confused." ,. Luckily, Redford was directed to the proper people and was able to get his aca- demic career on the right path. Because of his> dealings with advising, Redford wanted to become an active member in the fight for more funding. He believes that this additional money will help many students excel in their college careers. The petitioned money will provide additional advising staff, give proper training to advisors, improve on-line advising, and create an advisor evaluation project. According to Redford, the cur- . rent advisors are working overtime to help students with their college experience. He stressed that the advisors are away to keep students at UW-Parkside as well as to help students along to a clear Career path. With the help of advisors, students can have a good education while spending as little time and money as possible. Redford encourages students to leam the facts about the advising petition. He feels that if you are a student unhappy with your advising experience, if you are a student who isn't getting the most of your college experience or if you are a student who has had success and want others to have the same, you should sign the petition. The primary changes proposed according to Corey Mandley, presi- dent of PSGA, are in the areas of membership and objective. The objective is centered on the represen- tation of students as well as their par- ticipation within the student govem- ment. [f the changes are approved, then many of the organizations on campus will be given a legal standing in PSGA as well as voting member- ship. "This would then create larger committees which would be more productive then the three-member committees of curren," said Mandley. "The changes will move the student government in a diverse, productive, and positive direction." Opposition to the changes revolve around the line item veto and the issue of power. Mandley said, "The proposed changes to the line item veto are being omitted due to the dislike among the student body." Bill Ager, a member of the Parks ide Adult Student Alliance (PASA) said, "Corey may have the charisma and the persuasiveness that makes a politician, but it is his ethical record that will be remembered." The original 255-pound bronze plaque hangs in Bascom Hall at UW-Madison and states, "Whatever may be the limitations which trammel inquiry elsewhere, we believe that the Great State University of Wisconsin should ever encourage that con- tinual and fearless sifting and winnowing by which alone the truth should be found." The powerful words, which later, became known as the "Wisconsin Magna Charta," came from a report issued by the Board of Regents in response to the trial of Richard Ely. The 1894 case accused Ely, an economics professor, of being the author of "utopian, impracticable and pernicious doc- trines." Recently, the 1964 replica plaques were discovered amongst other historical pieces m UW-Parkside's Archives. Parkside welcomes one more fresh new face JO 10 9 11 Jl 1J 12 Alisa Chojnacki Of the Ranger News Staff When wanting help in choosing class- es, deciding on a major, or getting con- nected with campus resources, the Advising Center is the place to go. Not only can students have their questions answered, they can also have the opportu- nity to meet the new director of academic advising, Elizabeth Teagan, Ed.D. The Advising Center is a clearing house for questions about UW-Parkside, academic policies and procedures, and general education requirements, foonerly known as BOK, or Breath of Knowledge. The center also strives to initiate and actively sustain student involvement in the development and implementation of mean- ingful educational plans while giving sup- port in the realization of changing academ- ic, career, and life plans. An important part of the Advising' Center is to advise the undeclared" majors. According to Teagan, "Just like the com- munication major has a group of faculty members, a set of courses, and a physical location for their academic home, the advising center provides -a community where the undeclared student actively explores the decision making process for choosing a major." One way that Teagan helps students is by meeting with them one-on-one or in small groups. This benefits the student by giving them the individual attention that they require and deserve. "What typically begins as a simple question turns into the 'beginning of problem solving for an issue in a student's life that impacts their entire academic agenda," she stated. By resolv- ing difficulties in a timely manner, the stu- dent can continue to grow academically and graduate in four to five years. Teagan comes to Parkside with vast experience in the advising field and recent research which serves as the basis for aca- demic advising. She received her doctorate in cognitive and moral development from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where she was an academic advi- sor. Teaching in advising in New England, she wasthe Director of Advising and also a professor at Mansfield University in Pennsylvania. At Mansfield University, Teagan introduced the concept of advising for the retention of students,which proved to be a success. ~'The retention rate almost doubled there within three years," she stat- ed. Since Parkside is looking to increase the retention rate of students, it is only nat- ural that Teagan would implement appro- priate parts of the program here with the hope of achieving a similar rate of success. Located in Wyllie Hall 107, the Advising Center is open Monday through Friday, 7:45 a.m, to 6 p.m., extension 2040. Teagan is looking forward to meet- ing with students to help solve their acade- mic needs. While walk-ins are welcome, appointments are greatly appreciated. Course scheduling begins November 12 for the Spring 1999 semester. Reardon was instrumental in the revi- talization of a neighborhood in East St. Loui , II. His visit was sponsored by UW- Parksidc's Center for Community PartnershipslNeighborhood University Alliance (NVA). While at UW-Parkside, Reardon poke to tudents, faculty and a variety of the universities members on "The Engaged University." He also made trips to the Family Resource Center of Racine and the Lincoln Neighborhood Center of Kenosha. Both neighborhoods are targeted by UW-Parkside's I-IUD grant. Reardon offered suggestions and tips of hi success to the centers on the site vis- 7 6 Jenni Wehrli Of the Ranger News Staff From mid-October to December 2, there was a "penny war" going on in Ranger Hall. The first, second, and third floors each had their own jars and the fourth and fifth floor were com- bined because they are smaller than the other floors. The idea was that one penny counted as one point, and silver its. He spoke of his experiences with revi- talization in the East St. Louis neighbor- hood. One of Reardon's suggestions to make a successful partnership between the uni- versity and the community was to make small and tangible improvements to the neighborhoods. Once these steps were taken, Reardon believes that the partner- ship will blossom. "You have to walk the walk," stated Reardon, "and talk the talk." Another key to successful communi- ty/university partnerships is putting the community in the drivers seat. To do this in East St. Louis, Reardon passed out maps and disposable cameras to the neigh- borhood residents at the first meeting. From there, the residents were instructed to take nine photos of positive aspects of the neighborhood, nine shots of the nega- tive aspects of the neighborhood and nine pictures of untapped resources. They were also instructed to place landmarks and boarders on their maps. These activities helped point out troubled areas as well as teach the residents about democratic research. Reardon pointed out that a partnership was not about the university helping the community. "The term shouldn't be service learn- ing, it should be reciprocal learning," said Reardon. He stressed that the university could learn from the neighborhood and vice versa. Reardon recently celebrated his tenth anniversary on the East St. Louis Project. He stated that the relationship between the community and UW-Parkside must be a long lasting and sustainable commitment. He believes that the role of the university will change throughout the process. Currently, according to Reardon, there are 88 schools with grants similar to UW- Parkside's HUD grant. His project has spread to eleven neighborhoods in East SI. Louis, II. His visit concluded Wed. evening with a dinner with the NVA Partnership Council. Interested enough to fill the Union Theater and a good portion of Union Square to allend the Cash For College Seminar here at UWP. An estimated 460 parents and students braved the ele- ments on the evening of January 13. And although they had a couple of good incentives-free food and $2,000 in scholarships-the main attraction was infer- mation. "The whole idea of the program was to give parents and students practical ideas to pay for college without mortgaging their futures. We wanted to give them a pres- sure-free way to explore financing options. And the scholarship money that could be used at the school of their choice probably did- n't hurt attendance," said program organizer and UWP Financial Aid and Scholarships Director Carl Buck. Along with Buck, who is a nationally known for his financial aid expertise expertise available to UWP students on a continuing basis- the program featured CPA and tax-expert John Andreoli of Clifton Gunderson & Co.. A repre- sentative from the Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation also was on hand to present and answer questions. The Cash For College evening began at 6:30 p.m. with a Financial Aid Fair. Here parents and students learned what help is avail- able from local lenders while enjoying a free buffet. The seminar itself began at 7 p.m., filling the 400-seat UWP studenl receives Kenosha Mayor'S Scholarship UWP junior Marne Lester was among the local students who recently received a Kenosha Mayor's Youth Commission scholarship. The awards for community ser- vice were announced during a reception on December 8, by Mayor'S Youth Commission Chair Kathy Walsh. Lester, a 20-year-old mar- keting major, was honored for her involvement in volun- teer activities through the UWP Optimist Club and as part of her activities as Miss Kenosha 1997. She is also involved in entertaining and singing at the veterans hospi- tal and with the usa group at Great Lakes Naval Training Center during the holidays. She volunteers at the Spanish Center and Bain School. Along with her volunteer work, Lester was on the UWP Dean's List in 1997 and 1998 and she was in Who's Who Among American High School Students in 1995 and 1996. "A lot of the activities are co-sponsored with other organizations. For example, the movie "Lean On Me" [which will be shown on February 121 is co-sponsored with PAB, [The Parkside Activities Board], as part of the movie series. The Think Fast Quiz Bowl on Monday, February 8, is also co-sponsored with PAB. The emphasis of the questions in the quiz bowl will be on Black history triv- ia." Stephanie went on to See Celebration, Page 12 about African-American his- tory. His efforts were suc- cessful, and eventually the entire month of February was dedicated to celebrating Black history. February was chosen because many important African-American figures and institutions were born in this month. This month, the UW- Parkside community will have many opportunities to celebrate Black history. Stephanie Sirovatk, who works in University Activities, explained how many different student Karen Diehl Throughout the month of February, some of the stu- dents, faculty and staff at UW-Parkside will be dedi- cating time to celebrating Black History Month. Black history month origi- nated in the 1920s as "Negro History Week". However, the event wasn't taken very seriously until Dr. Carter Good win, an African- American scholar, decided to devote his time and effort to the cause. In 1926, he began to organize lectures, exhibitions and meetings DiversilV Plan 2008 but we are looking for sug- gestions." The targeted areas include only four groups. According to Duetsch, the Board of Regents requested that cam- puses take on other diversity issues involving gender and sexuality in other ways, but only focus on the four set groups for the report. The Plan 2008 Task Force will suggest to Chancellor Jack Keating a Diversity Committee which will include all groups on campus who will address the whole range of diversity issues. According to Larry Duetsch, Secretary of the Faculty and interim Equity and Diversity Chief, the Plan 2008 Task Force formulated ideas in the discussion draft about how the seven goals could be successfully addressed. "We have taken our best shot," said Duetsch. Although the plan was not regarded as terribly successful, it made way for the proposed Plan 2008. The Wisconsin Board of Regents, along with the Multicultural Office, created seven goaIs to prolriete diver- sity. The plan targets four groups who have been unde- served in Wisconsin. All proceeds go to Big Brothers / Big Sisters in Kenosha and Racine. There are four dates to choose from: Saturday Feb. 20 Sunday Feb. 21 Saturday Feb. 27 Sunday Feb. 28 You have the choice of bowling on a noon-S p.m. shift or a 3-6 p.m. shift. Teams are comprised of five people. If you can not find enough people to form a team, Big Brothers / Big Sisters will place you on a team. All bowlers need to get pledges to sponsor them per pin or a flat rate. The requirement is that each bowler collects a minimum of ten sponsors or $50. Bowling will be held at the Plaza Bowling Center in Racine. There is also an opportunity to bow I on Saturday Feb. 27 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Surfside Bowling Lanes in Kenosha. On the day you choose to bowl you will be provided with free bowling shoes, three games of bowl- ing, and pizza. The Volunteer • Touch Tone service makes life easier for Students Amanda Bulgrin Ranger Staff One of the many services the University of Wisconsin-Parkside offers to ease the load of students is Touch Tone Information. By dialing X3400 from any campus phone, students can hear their grades or schedules, register for and change classes, be put on a wait list for classes, withdraw from school, purchase parking permits and find out if classes are available or filled. UW-Parkside's service is equipped with 12phone lines. "In the UW-System, there is an average of one phone line for every 500 students. UW-Parkside has more lines per student than the rest of the system," said Susan johnson of the Registrar's Office. johnson is aware, however, that there are some complications with the sys- tem. One such glitch is the slow main frame. "Students find it hard to sit through the silence," stated johnson. "T he computing people are continually working to fine tune the system, so don't get discouraged." Another issue is the busy signal. According to johnson, 40-50students have the same registration time. When their time comes, they rush to the phone to register. "Give the system ten minutes to quiet down," johnson advises. johnson believes there are many benefits to the Touch Tone service. "There is no wait in line to register; you can register in the comfort of your location, and it is much more convenient." In April, registration will be available on the UW-Parkside web page, but johnson stated the new system is stillin the formative stages. And the expert, Northwestern University Professor of philosophy Dr. David Hull, was ready to tell all. As past president of both the Philosophy of Science Dr. DavidHull Association and the Society of SystematicZoology, the author of numerous books, and editor of the series "Science and its Conceptual Foundations," Hull spoke with authority. During his lecture at UW-Parkside : Wedn~ay, Feb. 17, he tackled e questions of how science does and doesn't work and what makes SCientists act poorly. In scientific cir- cles, Hull explained, "fraud" means - 1M I I II misconduct and refers to intentional or unintentional acts such as plagia- rism or sloppiness in research habits, the most common violations in scien- tific research. From a moralistic viewpoint, Hull said "In general, most people's inten- tions don't matter." What matters is keeping proper credit and accurate records. How does science behave? Rewards are not based on monetary gain for most scientists. Hull observes, scientists who receive large grants and incomes tend to have their behavior disintegrate and lose perspective. Reward or punishment is realized through credit for one's discoveries or loss of credibility. Researchers who publish first get all the creclit. After all, there are only 52 Saturday mornings in any given year. But that's what a group ofUW-Parkside alum- ni did on snowy Saturday, Feb. 20,to attend the Alumni Forum. Part of UW-Parkside's 30th year anniversary cele- bration, the Forum was held to give alumni the chance to meet new Chancellor Jack Keating and hear the University's plans for the future. "We are working to become an engaged univer- sity," Chancellor Keating told the alumni. 'We want to better connect. with you and with the communities we serve for the benefit of our current and future students. [The alumni] are important in this equation because you help to create the internships and job opportunities today's and tomorrow's stu- dents need." This sounds fa.nu liar . Perhaps this re~inds you of Twisterz Or Conjettiz, but the bar is in Pans in 1904. The conversations also include a bit of intellectual thought. The patrons of the bar are not UW-Parks.de students, but happen to be Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein. That' right, just before they reach the status of genius, they experience a lag in their w rk. Steve Martin wrote the play "Picasso at the Lapin Agile" about what that might have been like. This play is performed and produced by UW-Parks.d students and is direct· ed by Dr. Leon J. Van Dyke. It opens at the Univ rsity of WlSCOnsin-Parkside Communication Arts Studio Theatre n February 26. Steve Martin's por- trayal of Einstein and Picasso gives a m re human angle of the two highly respected individuals. Standing before the group, dressed in a handmade batik caf- tan with machine embroidery and a vibrant hand-loomed royal-blue NileOlaniyi Davies, one of Nigeria's most renowned artists, demonstrates batik caftan at a workshoplast week. Davies explained the greeting is part of everyday life in Nigeria, and instructed them to repeat the greeting. With pleasantries exchanged, Davies said her work- shops students "always take something back home." Today; students would take home two batik creations made using differ- ent methods. The reasons people chose to attend the workshop were as var- ied as the textiles they produced. Some were attending as a require- ment for a sociology or anthropol- ogy class. Some came because a friend invited them, and still oth- ers were art majors interested in meeting the artist and learning batiik. Batik is the process of creating patterns on cloth by applying wax which resists color when the cloth is dyed. After dying, the wax is removed, leaving behind the patterns. However, there are many ways to achieve the effects of batik without using wax. Davies introduced the class to an indigo-dyed cloth made by the Yoruba women of Nigeria called adire which translates into tie and dye. This cloth is made using a variety of resistant dye tech- niques including knotting or tying, folding, or sewing raffia onto the fabric. On average, 585 pints of blood and blood components are transfused to patients in our area every day. Only about 4 percent of the eligible people donate. On Monday, March 29, the Blood Center will be on campus to collect blood donations from students and staff. This event is sponsored by the Student Health Counseling Center and the Molecular Biology Club, The drive will be held from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. in Union 104-106. For more information or to lock in a time, call the Student Health Counseling Center at 595-2366 prior to the drive. There will be a sign-up table set up on March 22, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., in Wyllie Hall across from the Library for anyone who wants to sign up. Many of us know someone, or have read about someone who has needed a blood transfusion. Without the kind- ness and generosity of strangers many loved ones would not be alive today. One hour of your time and one pint of your blood can make a difference. To be an eligible blood donor you must be 17, weight at least 110 pounds, and have no prior history of hepatitis or behaviors associated with AIDS. Please donate and help save lives. Women's History Month Events Usa Kiefert UW-Parkside's Womyn's Center is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month. Throughout the month, guest speakers will talk about their life expe- riences, giving background informa- tion on the history of women and their own lives. The events are free and some are open to the public. March 4: Nice Girls Don't Sweat - A one-act play performed by jane Curry. It is a feministic satire on the history of women and sports.
