Blake, who is PSGA Treasurer, took issue with the changes because the GA delegates did not have the new text ten days before meeting in Steven's Point. If they had had the actual proposal for ten days, delegates could have made more informed choices, he argued. "If people don't know what's going on, they just vote blindly," said Blake. Although there had been no text for the changes the proposed change in the UC bylaws was perfectly okay, said Stacy. The proposals had been discussed at the Superior General Assembly last month (to which Parkside sent no representatives) and had been talked about in the President's newsletter. The UC President reported that, when considering such a change, the UC normally announces that there will be a vote on the matter, without debating any specifics. This proposal was not only announced one month earlier, Stacy said, but it was also discussed. The delegates who attended both the Superior and the Steven's Point GA's had already gone over the proposal and its ramifications. McIntoshwas sentenced to 18 yearsin prison, Gomaz to 9. Jason Ostman, who died on Jan. 3, 1994 due to LSDrelatedseizures, was a 20 year-oldJunior majoring in Physicsat the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. His deathoccurred after aNew Year'sEve party. Thetrial of McIntosh and Gomaztook place in August andSeptember of 1994. Prosecution witnesses testifiedthat LSD caused Ostman's seizures, and ultimatelyhis death. The defensecited that there was nomedicalliterature to supportthis theory. McIntosh sold the LSD to Gomaz, who used $50 from Ostman to buy the drug for him. The two defendants were convicted on Friday, Sept. 2, 1994. Gilbert Ostman, Jason's adoptive father, spoke prior to the sentencing on Nov. II. He asked Judge Michael Fisher to give the ifllwIIJlftRIl1illllll.' maximum sentence of 20 years. Gomaz's attorney, Public Defender Labish Bergovoy, recommended a five-year sentence for the 17 year-old. Gomaz, a juvenile, had been waived into adult court. McIntosh's counsel, Douglas Henderson, asked for a 10 year sentence for his client. McIntosh has a criminal record including robbery, contributing to the sexual delinquency of a child, theft, battery and disorderly conduct. Assistant District Attorney Bruce Becker asked that the maximum sentence be given to McIntosh, and a "substantial" sentence be given to Gomaz. Judge Fisher told the court that education and severe penalties are the only way to help save people like Jason Ostman. "Ifthere weren't people selling drugs, Jason Ostman would be alive," Fisher said. Parkside student's letter causes investigation byTabitha Brown StaffWriter Inresponse to a full page ad which ran in a September'94 issue of The Ranger News, Lisa McGahan, a University of Wisconsin-Parks ide student visited Kenosha Plasma Donor Center as a prospectivedonor. She states that her experience oneSaturday in October was "humiliating, inappropriate, uncomfortable, and unprofessional." McGahan said that the staff behaved in an unprofessional and rude manner. In addition to the clericalstaff, McGahan had an unpleasant experiencewith the doctor. She states that "the doctordid not introduce himself, did not wear a nametag, and did not have any medical certification within sight." McGahan said that the doctor"used extremely unprofessional terms to describebody parts, body functions, and sexual activities."She also states that while he discussed the origin ofAIDS, he "touched his genital area to further demonstrate the point." Todd Rasor, Manager of Interstate Blood and Plasma, Inc. (associated with Kenosha Plasma Donor Center), stated that he wasn't aware of any ofthe incidents which took place that Saturday because he wasn't working that day. Rasor also stated that there seemed to be "a chain of events that happened in that one circumstance" which included an employee that they have let go. What pleased Rasor was that he did receive a response which was the only way that he would know what went on when he wasn't there. He feels that McGahan's response was "a step in the right direction for the center." Rasor says that if McGahan would have walked away and not said anything the problem would have continued. Rasor further states that "a lot of the experience she had centered around the doctor." The speaker was acquelineBoynton, a COOperatingattorney with the AmericanCivil Liberties Union. In 1991 came her first case as a cooperating attorney ~th the ACLU, challenging a Ogoofa Native American - used by a non-native school. Boynton described some of these stereotypical logos: leaping savages, headdressed with hook noses and spears. The logo of a high school in Milton, WI, was challenged by a former high school student's mother on the basis that the behavior it evoked violated Wisconsin statute 118.13 by being detrimental to her child's access to education. The school board gave the complaint little consideration and voted to maintain the logo; the decision was upheld on appeal to the Department of Public Instruction. This is all too common a scene in high schools and colleges across the country where racist presentations of Native Americans are supported overwhelmingly by white communities as historically relevant, much too expensive to remove from requires that doctors use basic terminology so that the patient can relate to it. Rasor said that the doctor, who was foreign, "appeared to use language in a manner which is beyond what is considered acceptable." Because this matter had been discussed with the doctor on one other occasion the center thought it best to let him go. According to Rasor, McGahan "had a bad experience which was an unfortunate circumstance which [he says] wasn't a true representation ofthe center." Rasor contends that the matters described in the letter were discussed and corrected because they let the doctor go and put their certificate on the wall. Rasor states "we are open to anyone's concerns and are willing to make corrections." McGahan states that the "visit that should have been beneficial to [her] and others was, at the very least, disappointing." the schools, in keeping with their First Amendment right to free speech and even being honorable to the "noble savage." Ms. Boynton said that there are schools that are making a concerted effort to remedy any offense their logos may have had to the indigenous population in their schools and the surrounding areas by educating themselves on the diversity issue, removing and replacing the logo and informing other schools of their action and reasoning. Audience members asked Attorney Boyton if removal of logos offensive to Indians meant that the Vikings and Midgets would be protesting next. This makes it strikingly apparent that information, respect and cultural sensitivity are needed in academia, the media and in our society. Getting one step ahead by The Communication Senior Seminar Class This semester's Communication 495 Senior Seminar class is currently involved in a semester long project aimed at increasing awareness of internships and volunteer work. The class feels that information on available internships is not readily available to all students. As a result, many students are not aware of the potential value of these opportunities. These values include: resume-building, application of course work to practical experience, handson experience, exploring future career opportunities, and making contacts outside the university. To increase the availability of information on internships and volunteer positions, the class is preparing a booklet. This booklet will include reasons for doing internships/volunteer work, and student testimonials. The booklet is being prepared by students, for students. This week's volunteer is Joel Dutton. helping 3rd graders with reading and math to designing bulletin boards and grading papers. Cathy Caruso, the teacher he is assigned to, reports how much the children look forward to Mondays when Joel volunteers. She said, "The children just love Joel. From the very first day, they felt comfortable with him. He is very conscientious and has come in extra days to help. Our elementary schools need more positive role models like Joel." Recently, Joel responded to a request for a geometry tutor at Bradford High School. Joel Dutton, a Sparta, WI, native, is a senior geographymajor with an interest in elementary education.In addition to his volunteer work, Joel is a PSGAsenator and is activelyinvolved in Parkside wrestling. Joel has been volunteering three hours everyweek at Stocker Elementary school in Kenosha since school started this fall. Last week two news stories featured drugrelated problems. The stories were on the drug-related arrest ofBrent Moss, and the drugrelated killing ofTyrone Echevarria. Drugs played an important role in these stories. As reported in the Racine Journal Times, Echevarria was advancing on a police officer with a steak knife outside a building on Douglas Avenue (in Racine). Echevarria was attem pting to kick a crack cocaine habit, and like anything else, it was one step forward and five steps back. His family turned him in because they were concerned that he might be using drugs again. They didn't want him killed, just captured. He had five kids, and they were concerned about his erratic behavior over the past few days. If you are wondering, "Why does Barb seem to know so much about this man?", you are very perceptive. I knew this man pretty well. My mother and I met him at the dog track, and he became a good friend of my mother's. He told her about his past. I was underthe impression that with age came maturity, dignity, and better pick-up lines.Boy, was I mistaken. He thought he was so inconspicuous butI spotted that shiny "Saturday Night Fever" shirt and those polyester pants from a mile away not to mention his Old Spice cologne that filled the air each ofthe fifteen times he passed us by. So he works his way over and says, "Hey girls, do you want to trip the lights fantastic?" "No," I replied. "Why not?" he asked. "Because we're talking here," I responded. "Oh, what cha talkin' bout?" he asked. "None of your business," my friend responded. Then, I turned away from him and resumed my conversation with my friend. For the next half hour he kept sticking his head into our conversation. He just wouldn't leave. (Here's a free tip guys, harassment isn't the way to pick up a girl.) So, I walked to the ladies' room to get away from him. On my way a guy bumps into me realiy hard and says, -os, Hi. How have you been doing?" "I don't think we know each other," I said. "Sure you do. We met at Donna's party. Then, I turned and walked away feeling pretty aggravated that someone would think I was so stupid that I couldn't remember giving him my number at a recent party. Finally, I make it to the bathroom wherein there was no toilet paper, running water) and some woman trying to squirt me with perfume for fifty cents. This night was going to hell in a handbasket and quick. As the night grew older, so did the age of some of the pick up lines I was hearing. They were: "Do you come here often?" "Is this bar stool taken?" "What cha drinkin' honey?" I've never seen you here before," "Youlook like someone I know." What a sorry bunch of pickup lines. These lines are as old as the earth. I thought these mature adults could come up with something a little more original that that. I began to wonder why the men who I found to be the least attractive happen to be the ones in the bar who were asking all the women to dance. The good-looking ones just huddled in a group and . never ventured outward. Another phenomenon, was that the closer the clock grew to 2:00 a.m., the more frequent the pick up lines were spouted. What a bizarre evening. I spent half my night deflecting the come-on lines of short (shorter than me), Woody Allen types. I was glad to go home. bombs, another to legislate. b. Will Republican tax policies work if enacted? Bill Archer wants to totally revamp the tax system. c. How will this national lurch to the right affect minorities and issues they care about? d. What will the Democrats do now? Will they seriously consider replacing Clinton in '96? e. Is this nation really as socially conservative as some Republicans would have us believe? Will the Republicans playa game of pay back and unleash an investigative The next day I began to wonder if any other women or men have either experienced bad pick-up lines such as those already mentioned or, even worse, have possibly been responsible for using them on someone else. So I began to ask around Parkside. I approached guys first, of course. They admitted that they had used some pretty lame pick up lines in bars before but, acting very embarrassed, would not divulge their secrets. So I tried again with another group of guys. Still, no one would talk. Then it hit me. These guys weren't drunk. Let's face it, that's when our inhibitions are lowered and our libidos are raised. Which is when the best/worst pickup lines make their debut. Next, I asked a couple of groups of girls. The most common lines they admitted to hearing were: "Can I buy you a drink?" "Are you from around here?" and the ever popular, "What's your sign?" One guy, a friend of mine, admitted to using one that I'd never heard before, "Are your legs tired?" "No," responds the girl. "Because you've been running through my mind all night," says he. I couldn't believe how corny that sounded. Still, it was original. I guess there's a lesson to be learned in all ofthis. If you're looking to meet someone in a bar, you had better think ofsomething to say that's not played out. And God forbid, don't wear a shiny disco shirt that's swimming in Old Spice. From a woman's perspective, I think the most effective thing to say is simply, "Hello". Smiling and good eye contact are subtle and alluring ways to catch a person's attention, as well. Have fun and be yourself. Try dispensing with the phony pick-up lines altogether and just act like a real person. Well, fellow tavern travellers I'll be seeing you in the trenches. Many people wanted to strike out at the Clinton presidency through their congressmen, representatives, or governors, and they did. The Republicans are now in a "put up or shut up" position. They must, I repeat MUST, stop the petty partisan bickering that had marred this last congressional session, and start working together with the remaining Democrats to form a workable coalition. Noone, not you, I, or Congress, can afford to do everything that they want to do. It is up to the individual to decide what needs outweigh what wants, and to work on how to pay for them. Itis the same principle for Congress. They must decide on what MUST be done, and do it. Otherwise, the Congress will continue to be the least respected group of people in America. I have a saying that should be put on every Congressman, Representative, and Governor's desk. Itis "the pork stops here." No more pork barrel politics, guys. Start making priorities, and stick to them. Ifthe Congress has a problem, perhaps they should talk to me. So far, I have managed to mostly pay my bills while workingtwo jobs and going to school full time. If! can do this on approximately $11,000 a year, I am sure that the Congress, ifthey work hard enough on compromise, cutting waste, and stopping new pork barrel projects can do the same thing. Itmay very well be 'a good day to be a Republican' to quote good old Tommy himself. The question is, will it stay a good month, year, and beyond for Republicans, or will the populist third party finally get offthe ground in 1996 as many people get disgusted with politics as usual???? One Liberal's Opinion by Barb Churchill Ranger columnist Good afternoon, all you loyal Ranger News readers (all two of you). So, what did you think oflast Tuesday's election results? If you are an independent liberal, like I am, you are probably pretty depressed by now. Not only did Tommy Thompson win by a landslide as I predicted, but Barca also went down. Almost all offices that were contested statewide went Republican. Not only that, with the exceptions ofthe places that were having gun referendums (Kenosha and Milwaukee spring to mind immediately), the turnout was only fair despite better than average weather. One of my friends didn't vote. When I asked him why not, he said that he 'didn't come from a voting family.' Well, I guess that the nonvoters ruled again. I for one find it hard to believe that anyone believes that the economy is getting better. Most ofthe people I know work more than one job to support themselves if they are on their own. Even ifthey are still living at home, most of them work. The Democrats and Independents out there traditionally support working people, and the Republicans support the rich and big money interests. The vote going heavily Republican says two things: 1) Most people are misinformed as to the state of the economy and their personal finances, and believe that their voting against "~~'~,l\1iU··· wMDf:JIII' iI~gs·a,iEll1"r6ffi~ri1swith"l;tt,;eili~a.tfg>n prescribed to keep him off of them. But, did this mean that he should be killed, because he had made a few mistakes? I think not. I am not blaming the police. During an adrenaline rush, anything can happen. They may have been intending to wound him only, and ended up killing him instead. However, none of this had to happen. Something is very wrong with society in general, if a man who is trying to get help dies because he can't admit that he has a problem or he will go in jail. This man didn't want to go back to jail, because he had five kids which he was attempting to support, and lets face it, he had had enough ofjail. The thorny problem is this: how much ofhis behavior was intensified by societal stresses, and how much of his behavior was caused by his own problems? In other words, who gets the blame, and how much? This is a very hard question. I am not sure how to answer it, but I will say that I think that considering the fact that Echevarria was trying to get off of the drugs, it is especially tragic that his death occurred then. The Brent Moss problem pales in comparison. First of all, the facts are not all in. Moss might have had the cocaine, but why? Hopefully, the intent to deliver charge was only because he didn't want to admit that it was for himself. He still has an excellent chance to play in the NFL, and become a star. He is an outstanding running back who has On the matter of too much space Some interest has arisen over what would seem to be extra space surrounding an ad that has run at various times over the course ofthe semester. As explained to one or two individuals that have recently questioned the ad and its placement, it is, in fact, a full page ad placed according to the wishes of the advertiser. What looks like extra space was paid for as well as the text. The advertiser feels that by having a large amount of space surrounding a relatively small ad, more attention will be drawn towards the ad as a whole. This approach seems to be somewhat successful. -NickZahn college football. He can still become an NFL star. It is disheartening that this would happen now, on the verge of the college bowls, and I for one find it disappointing to say the least. Hopefully, Moss will still have his career left. It is a shame that this happened, but at least he didn't die, like Echevarria did. I support drug legalization, for the simple reason that neither of these things wonld have happened were drugs legal or at least not considered a criminal offense (decriminalization). In Echevarria's case, he would have legally been able to get help for his drug problem, and so wouldn't have necessarily fallen through the cracks of the legal/judicial system. In Moss's case, being busted for cocaine possession/intent to deliver(?) would never have happened. It would be a non-issue. IfMoss were supplying drugs, (not that he is; this is a rhetorical question) he would be taxed legally, just as in any other legitimate business. I don't approve of drugs, but legalization is the only way. Otherwise, life will continue as it is in America. People will continue to be afraid to step outside of their own homes. People will continue to be busted that didn't need to be. People will continue to be killed that didn't need to be. All the tragedy will continue unabated, and everything will continue its downward spiral into black despair. First of all, we give caution to those who want to see Interview because Tom Cruise (Top Gun, ' The Firm) is in it. Although his acting ability is definitely relevant, and such a change of character, his part is quite small. Step aside, Tom, this is a Brad . Pitt movie. Pitt (A River Runs Through It )takes a big step in Interview, facing a lead role and critical pressure, yet he did it well, being very thorough with his part, and making a huge transformation. To complete the set there is movie stud number three, Christian Slater tTrue Romance, Untamed Heart). Slater makes his tiny part as the interviewer quite noticeable, considering he was cast as a substitute after we suffered the loss of River Phoenix, the original interviewer. Moving to the female side of the cast, we have young Kristen Dunst, playing the young vampire Claudia, who makes a huge impact in her first film. We congratulate you, Kristen, you went right for the throat on this one. The movie starts with Slater interviewing the vamped-out Pitt about his life. Pitt plays Lonis, a depressed man who had lost his wife and child, and who wants to die. Then comes Lestat, a vampire played by Cruise, who grants Louis his death wish, along with giving him the eternal life of a vampire. Louis finds he does not like the murderous life of a vampire and has to struggle with survival. Lestat then finds Louie a young vampire companion, Claudia, to put him at ease. Eventually Louis and Claudia ditch Lestat and look for more of their kind. Their ventures continue from there. Overall, the movie is very dark and morbid, with a lot of gore on the side. Just do not expect squirt guns filled with holy water or garlic necklaces, because this movie portrays the realistic side of a vampire. Interview may not be for all audiences, so taking that into consideration, we give it a yellow light. We hope you do not have weak stomachs, future viewers. Lights, Camera, Action... The Specialistv-v» by Dawn Apostoli Ifyou are interested in seeing massive, fiery explosions, a hot pursuit to help a distressed woman seek revenge, and well-thought-out schemes to kill a bunch of killers - then The Specialist may be exactly what you are looking for. But before you go and see this flick, be prepared for a storyline that isn't exceptionally interesting or detailed and acting that is simply only mediocre. The two well-known stars, Sylvester Stallone and Sharon Stone, share the big screen in this film. Stallone's character, Ray, is a CIA agent who is referred to as "the Specialist". Ray is hired by a young woman, May Monroe (Stone), to assist her in locating the men she saw brutally kill her mother and father when she was just a little girl. Stallone accepts this dangerous yet typical job, and May helps him out by becoming physically close to one of the murderers. She is filled with so much hatred that she will do whatever it takes in order to relieve this pent-up anger, and she believes that getting close to one of the murderers is the only way to destroy him. The killers all seem to be aware of the animosity that May has for them, so they are on the lookout and are out to get Ray (who is constantly hot on their trail). The rest of the story is made up of the confrontations and murders between everyone who is involved in this situation. The enormous eruptions of flammable objects and other methods of killing seem to be going on quite frequently. Stallone is the main leader of all this lively action (with his generous supply of bubbling muscles). Imagine one of his methods of death: his victim swiftly soars through a room of spectators and his head busts through a large glass tank of Sly Stallone + Boy George = Lips Supreme From the book StarMorphspublished by Contemporary Books water. Another one of the bad guys is abruptly ejected into the air and sent whirling away thanks to a rather large explosion which set his car ablaze. As a result of another one of Stallone's game plans, a few men plunge into the ocean along with a portion ofthe concrete building they were in. One of his killings (which involves another explosion, didn't, however, work out quite the way he envisioned becausehe accidentally killed an innocent bystander ... or did he? There is a casket, a funeral, a dead body - but is it who everyone thinks it is? I thought the acting by Stallone and Stone wasn't too terrific. It could have been somewhat better and more realistic; some of their expressions looked a little fake. If you want to pay to see a movie like this, then by all means see The Specialist. Maybe you are more interested in seeing a movie full of battles and numerous people, buildings and automobiles set in flames instead of a movie with quality acting and an in-depth story. It's that time again ...time for me to post another poem for you to read. I hope you are still considering handing in a poem to me. The flow is picking up a little bit and I'm thankful for that. The poem for this week is one of mine. The poem for this week is entitled "IronGates." It deals with the high schools of America and the state they have been put in by our young people. So without hesitation ...here is "Iron Gates" ... It's so sad, I want to cry Our world is a mess Streets crowd with blue and red Color means so much ... Besides a six shooter, Or a needleshooter I was inspired to write this after trying to go back to myoid high school and visit some of my teachers. The secretary in the front office said I needed an appointment to see them now, she said they were upping the security on my former suburban school. I think that had a great deal to do with the former high school principal who was murdered last year in Milwaukee. I also thought of the metal detectors and the security officers installed in our city schools. I guess I shouldn't be mad, but I suppose it's keeping the children safer. I just wish it wouldn't have to had come to this. It affects the innocent people that try to enter our schools as well. Theory One according to ''V'': When choosing an album to add to your collection, if you are able to sample it beforehand, all you really need to listed to is the first and last tracks. If these two are to your personal liking, it is a pretty good indicator that you will enjoy a satisfactory amount of the entire entity. Skeptical? It is a theory, not a law (although it should be). I tested this theory yet again with a group that I had never heard of before. I surprised myself yet again with my theoretical brilliance. The Group: LiR. The title: "magica, magi co" . Their style was an amalgam of Spin DoctorslExtreme, with interludes ofRed Hot Chili Peppers, creating a sound so strikingly pleasant that the first track alone sucked me "Tannery" is a pleasant combination of clean and dirty guitar with welcome complex rhythms by both drums and bass. "CecilleB. Dumbsh%t" is the fourth Song on the EP, which happens to be twenty minutes long. After the first seven minutes in the song, you will find yourself hitting the fast forward button because the last thirteen minutes are nothing but a feed back circus. Even though the mix on the album leaves something to be desired, Sometime Sweet Susan still comes across as a hard hitting trio. This would urge any listener to turn this album up way past ten, or even better, experience them live. into a psychological addiction. Unlike rap or metal, the bass takes over the heartbeat, bringing it into harmony with nature itself. Sections of piano potentially urge one to world peace. Guitars both wail and exhibit a special artistry that shocked even me. I must admit that the lyrics are a little strange, yet they portray a simplified reality. My point? I liked them. I must give credit where credit is due. They could use some recognition from an individual such as myself. Brent Moss: Another Fallen Star? by Scott Fragale Sports Editor Ithappened once again. Another top athlete has fallen by the wayside. Last week's arrest of University of Wisconsin star Brent Moss for possession of crack cocaine with the intent to deliver, has added another name to the growing list of athletes who for one reason or another has turned to drugs. Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Roy Tarpley, Dexter Manley, Steve Howe, and Lawrence Taylor. The list seemingly could go on forever. Now we can add Brent Moss to the list of people who may never reach their full potential because of drug use. The warning signs have been there for years. Soon after leading the Badgers to a Big-Ten championship and a victory in the Rose Bowl (Moss was named game MVP), Brent Moss could look forward to his senior season. He could set his sights on another great season for the team, make a reasonable run at the Heisman Trophy, and plan on making a huge salary after being drafted by an N.F.L. team. Well, the Badgers have experienced some tough times due mainly to some key injuries (Moss included). The Heisman was a long-shot at best, and that huge salary has just had some zeros dropped from it. Last November, Moss talked with kids at a community center in Madison speaking about topics such as self-respect, avoiding drugs, and the value of hard work. Looking back, his comments appear to be somewhat hypocritical. After making several appearances of that nature over the last year, the media began to paint a picture of Brent Moss that now seems tainted. These include comments such as "Moss is not only a great athlete, but he's a model citizen as well." "He's giving back to the community." "He's a great role model." Statements of this nature began to circulate amongst the media and created an image of Brent Moss that perhaps overlooked some of his downfalls. Last April, I had the pleasure to do an interview with Moss, and looked forward to the chance to speak with him. He was one of my favorite local athletes, and from everything I had seen and heard of him, I believed he was not only a great athlete but a decent guy as well. Perhaps he was. Perhaps he still is. But some ofthe dealings I had in contacting him for the interview made question the image that the media had created. In my effort to contact Brent, I spoke with one of his cousins in Racine (Moss' hometown), to set up a time when we could conduct the interview. During our conversation, his cousin made a reference about drug use and he implied that Brent would be a part of it. When I actually did the interview with Moss, it was difficult due to the loud music on the other end of the phone. He constantly had to excuse himself from the conversation to try and settle people down who were attending the party. Itwas during this time when other drug related references were uttered in the background of our conversation. Moss told me about the now public 500,000 dollar insurance policy that the University of Wisconsin has on him in case of a career threatening injury. He also mentioned that several N.F.L. teams had offered him millions of dollars to leave school a year early. What Moss didn't mention to me was why he was in Racine for ten days during scheduled class time. When I asked him if the players were able to get jobs for spending money, he said "They take care of us." Itwas at this time that the image I had of him began to tarnish. There are many unanswered questions that remain in Brent Moss' life. His future at UWM appears to be over, although those circumstances could change before the season finale. Other questions still remain. One of which is how no one seems to remember that this isn't the first time that Brent Moss and drug use have been mentioned in the same breath. His history includes possession of marijuana both in high school and in college. After speaking personally with Moss last year and looking at his present situation, wasn't it really just a matter oftime before this story broke. Hopefully for Brent the person, something good will come from this ugly situation, and he'll get his non-football life in order before considering his options of being Brent Moss the athlete. "I learned the cornerback position from them," he said. The Raiders played Lake County in the semi-finals of the Midwest League this past weekend. They would play in finals November 19th. Itjust doesn't seem right that Buzz, Nolan, and the Raiders were turned away from the national tournament. '(But we put out a notice to all the teams saying that we'll play anyone," Bezotte said. Well, the 12-0 Racine Raiders allegedly have been shunned from the national tournament for just that reason. The Raiders have been so dominant in the Midwest League that they must have scared the selection committee. One huge reason for their success is 6'5", 280 pound tackle Jim "Buzz" Bezotte. Buzz, if you recall, was the NAJA and NCAA Heavyweight National Champion last year in wrestling. The first wrestler in seven years to accomplish that feat. Rick Nolan, the 1994 KochlHeisman Trophy recipient for Parkside's intramural flag football league, has also taken his skills to the Raiders at the cornerback position. After Bezotte ended his wrestling career with that rare double victory, one reporter wrote that maybe the NFL could use him. This started NFL rumors that Bezotte said were blown way out of proportion. "I had some contact with the 4gers and they offered me a chance to play on their practice squad, but they chose Rangers Fall in Finale kills and 12 digs on the evening. Tammi Rickert, Melissa Wolter, and Kelly Krupo each had seven kills for the match. Rickert led the team with digs coming up with 16 for the match. Michelle Danielson had 31 assists on the evening. Evaluations are looked at when a teacher is up for a raise, promotion, or tenure. The Attorney General has ruled that it is legal for students to have access to teacher evaluations. Lisa Kornetsky has been dealing with this issue since the beginning. The committee she helped put together is called The Student Course Information Pilot Project. This pilot project will be tested in four departments at the end ofthe semester. When asked what these four departments will do, Kornetsky said, "Each department will hand out EffectiveJanuary 1, 1995, the State of Wisconsin will ban the burial of recyclable materials in landfills. The Wisconsin Recycling Law requires all individuals and institutions in the state of Wisconsin to recycle. It provides a prioritized list of waste management options. Recycling is the third option, behind reducing and reusing. UW-Parkside is attempting to comply with the state law as follows. Presently there are 24 recycling stations in the public areas around campus. Each station consists of three bins: one for paper, one for commingled material (glass, plastic, and metal), and one for waste. Each recycling bin is labeled to show its purpose. Phase 2 will include the installation of additional units, including refurbished trash receptacles. "My discussion today will look at how national news magazines characterize race relations between blacks, Asian-Americans and Hispanics," Thornton said. When researching using articles published between 1980 and 1992, Thornton and his colleagues found 51 articles from 18 magazines dealing with race relations and the media. Only three of those dealt with race relations specifically. The remainder, he states, had, "ideas and discussions that are embedded in larger discussions." Thornton stated that there is, "an underlying set of agendas that the media was playing with in terms of how they present race relations generally." In support of this, he states, "what the press ignored in LA was that Racejcontinued on·p. 2. Previous studies had been limited to calculating the number of minorities in mass media organizations or Pamela Bradshaw Staff Writer MichaelThornton,an associate professor from UW- Madison, spoke at Parkside about his research into how national news magazines portray race relationships among minorities. The December 1st lecture was , sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs with funding from the Wisconsin Humanities Council. In his presentation, Thornton theorizes that "we primarily get our understanding about race and race relations from the mass medias." However, when searching for evidence he states that he discovered, "there are no studies looking at how mass media influences the nature of our understanding of race relations. In other words, how groups of people get along together." There will be a Tree of Hope displayed in the alcove next to the Women's Center Dec. 5 through finals. The tree is to remind us of the meaning ofthe holiday season, and we hope that everyone will take a few moments out of their busy schedules to remember the less fortunate by bringing in non-perishable food items. Michael Thornton looking at what stereotypes a single minority group presented on television. This prompted Thornton and his colleagues to begin their own study of race relations. Essentially, Snyder sees it as problematic that the faculty wasn't consulted when the decision to accept the policy was made. He states "the administration doesn't run the university in all aspects, [the] faculty has a lot to do with it." In addition, Snyder directed a question to the chair of the 1 separate issues and should be treated as such. If there needs to be any connection between the two issues, Snyder says that there should be a "minimal connection between them." Another problem that Snyder sees associated with the sexual harassment policy is that it was never endorsed by the faculty senate, yet it is on the books and presumably enacted. This raised the issue of Spoto, a suit filed by the faculty senate of UW- Platteville against the Evals, continued from p. 1 often judge their teachers on whether they liked them or not. They could judge their style of teaching. When asked how she treats her surveys, Davis replied that if a student does make a valid and helpful suggestion she would consider a change. She is also encouraged by good comments. Davis feels a little uncomfortable with the idea of these surveys being published. She believes the publishing the information would be acceptable if it was printed in a discreet, non-threatening way. She was concerned, though, with how much information would be revealed. have two sources of feedback that will let them know where they stand with students. Jessica Davis, a German instructor at UW- Parkside, has been teaching for six years. Davis is in favor of students evaluating their teachers because "Students do have a right to express their opinion and have a chance to give the teachers feedback on their performance throughout the semester." She feels that students should try to be fair when making these evaluations. The only problem with evaluations, according to Davis, is that students and these questions will ask, among other things, about teaching style and questions ifthe objectives ofthe teacher were clear." Eventually the results and a syllabus ofthe class will be made available in the library. These results will probably not be available until next year. "Students are qualified to evaluate certain aspects, but they are not best qualified to evaluate other things such as the content of the material," said Kornetsky. He states, "there's no discussion about economics, there's no discussion [or] very little discussion about racism, there's very little discussion about any of the wider thing while most of the press discussed black and Asian-American relations. Thornton continued by looking at what groups the media described as being involved in racial conflicts. He found mention of blacks, Hispanics and Asian-Americans. He states that, " what the media did, they homogenized each one of those groups." Thornton found the term black interchanged for Haitian, West Indian, African and Latin. He said Hispanics played a very important role in terms of what happened. One example ofthis is that most of the people arrested in LA were Hispanic. Why didn't the press make a big deal of that? '" involved in the Parkside Student Bruce Rocco Government Association (PSGA) (anarti<t'srmdering) as an dedicated and active member, will be taking a temporary leave of absence. During Rocco's two year involvement with this organization he has made great efforts in improving PSGA along with the entire student body. Until the recent PSGA meeting, held Friday, Jan. 20, he was SUFAC liaison to both the Parkside Child Care Center an the Ranger News. In the time since he was elected as senator in the spring of 1992, Bruce has worked hard at constantly getting resolutions and policies passed. One of the programs he worked hardest on was the safewalk program which began in the spring of 1993 after a rape occurred on Wood Road. With Bruce Rocco's resolution and footwork, along with great efforts from Marlene Schlecht, UW- Parks ide police officer, the program made it off the ground. Bruce recalls that it was the first time PSGA had ever established a working relationship between the Assistant Chancellor of Student Affairs and the UW-Parkside Police Department. "It was the first piece of legislature," Rocco recalled, "that I have ever seen passed with acclimation and signed by the President [of PSGAj that day." Bruce feels that his greatest accomplishment with PSGA has yet to happen, but he said, "The next greatest accomplishment is that [ have developed a fine working relationship with the finest bunch of professionals that I have ever met in my life." Other activities Bruce Rocco and the entire student government have been strongly involved with include budget cuts, United Council, and trying to get more people involved In public elections in both Racine and Kenosha counties and on the national scene. Rocco also held the position of Vice President of PSGA from December, 1993 through April I, 1994. Science Grants Awarded by Brian Matsen News Writer Due to the persistent efforts of Joseph Balsano, the University of Wisconsin-Parks ide has been awarded two federal grants worth nearly $90,000. Balsano, a professor of biological sciences, is a man whose goal is to see more science taught in classrooms. Science Fellows I, one of Balsano's programs. was awarded $40,807 and has been an on-going project for the past ten years. Every year for the past decade, Bals ano has 'received funding from outside sources such as school districts and various programs. "I've been very fortunate," he commented. Originally, the federal government funded his efforts under the National Science FOundation, then also from the U.S. Department of Education. This department houses the Wisconsin Dwight D. Eisenhower Mathematics and Science Act. Joseph Balsano These grants are not handed or awarded to institutions, but must be applied for by a written proposal. The federal government gives money to the UW-system, but members of a board don't "allocate it to anyone," he stated. Balsano stated grants are competitive and one must propose ideas and goals that address a need or needs to students. That's why Balsano consulted school districts and 'administrations, gathenng ideas before writing his proposal. "You wouldn't want to give away money for anything," he commented. Balsano feels he IS and has been addressing a need - Science Fellows I, and now Science Fellows II and Ill. Balsano said, "What we're doing is quite popular," referring to Science Fellows 1: A program to Improve Science Education in the Elementary School. Other organizations which once criticized Balsano's work are now beginning to model his program The first objective of this two-fold 'strategy is to reduce the teacher's anxiety to teach basic scientific facts, information. and concepts. The following goal is to provide these teachers with materials that will encourage hands-on-science. This will apply practical knowledge to the hands-on- experience that should make learning fun. Children want to do things. they have a short- attention span. "Lectures are no-no," he said. "The whole idea [of this program] is to ge more science taught." and h sees this as the way t accomplish it. by Brian Matsen News Writer Starting immediately, you'd be wrong if you referred to the building that houses the library, Main Place, and a number of administrative offices as The Wyllie Library Learning Center. Chancellor Eleanor J. Smith explained that a name change from the Wyllie Library Learning Center (WLLC) to Wyllie Hall is part of an overall project. Smith said the signs on campus are "a little piece of the project." Assistant Chancellor William W. Streeter, who works with administration and fiscal affairs, is responsible for exploring the ideas of where to post new signs on 1- 94, highways, and local roads around the community. He's working with an outside consultant to map out the best locations for these new signs. The Chancellor wants the university to be user-friendly, and she sees the simplification of Wyllie Library Learning Center to Wyllie Hall-as a good beginning for the college and the community. The name change is to help establish consistency with the other three halls (Molinaro, Greenquist, and Tallent), and to help prevent further confusion about what services are located in that facility. In the former Wyllie Library Learning Center, keying in on the word "library", one could mistake the building as just where the library is, and if he or she is looking for a certain room, he or she might assume that it would be in the library. "It assumes that everything is in the library." said the Chancellor. She wants students, faculty. and guests to be able to find the appropriate rooms and services without hassles. Again, she wants Wyllie Hall to be user-friendly. Harriet Wyllie, widow to founding Chancellor Irvin G. Wyllie, did not mind the name- change and said, ''I'm just glad they're keeping the [Wyllie] name." Originally, the university was going to name the building "Wy llie Center," which Mrs. Wyllie wishes they would have kept. The building was named Wyllie Library Learning Center in 1972 after Chancellor Wyllie who died in October of 1974. Racism lecture Jan.31 "Campus Racism Today: Blueprint for Uprooting Discrimination in America's College" will be discussed by political activist and historian Manning Marable during a free lecture at the University of Wisconsin-Parks ide on Tuesday, Jan. 31. The lecture will be held at 7 p.m. in Room 104 of the UW- Parkside Union, located at the far north end of the main campus complex. The lecture is sponsored by the university's Black History Month Committee and the Parkside Activities Board. Marable is professor of history and political science and director Columbia University's Institute for Research in African American Studies. He is the author of several books including "Beyond Black and White: Historical and Political Essays," "African-American Studies: Critical Perspectives of the Black Experience" and "Race, Reform and Rebellion: The second Reconstruction in Black America." Marable also is author of the syndicated newspaper column "Along the Color Line," published in more than 250 newspapers and broadcast by approximately 60 radio stations. Extended Shuttle Bus Hours The University Police and public safety is conducting a survey to determine if there is a need and interest to extend the hours of service of the Shuttle Bus. It was suggested by the Sexual Assault Prevention Task Force that the Shuttle Bus extend operation to 10:30 pm. This service would be one of three Escort Services available. on the Parkside Campus during the evening hours. The University Police provides escorts as well as the Campus Safewalk Program. A questionnaire has been provided to canvas the University population- students, faculty, and staff. The questions range for usage of the shuttle bus, usage of parking lots, and selected methods of paying for this extended shuttle bus service. • Input from the University population is greatly needed so UPPS may provide the services that are not only needed, but desired by those who UPPS serves. Deciding that it was time to retire early last September, Corr stated, "I have been very, very fortunate to have had the opportunity {() do the things that 1 have done over my life. I have always enjoyed teaching, and I think in the process of teaching we also learn. It has been a very satisfying and rewarding professional life for me.' Prior to reaching at Parkside in the fall of 1978, Corr had a distinguished b ac kg ro un d in accountiug . Born and raised III Ireland. he came to the United States in 1947 where he aue nded Northwestern University in Evanston. fL, the Uni versity of Georgia and graduated with a bachelors degree in accounting from New York University (NYU) in 1955. He completed his graduate work the following year at NYU. His teaching career began at his alma mater. NYU. in 1956. where he raught for nine years. He then worked eight years with the Institute of Management Accounts in New York where he was involved in developing and conducting short Courses and seminars for business managers. The activities will be in Main Place from 9am to 2pm. To promote the theme there will be a "kissing" booth opera led by the men's and woman's soccer teams. They will be giving Ou[ Hershey's Kisses with slogans in them such as "Abstinence makes the heart grow fonder." Small notebooks featuring one of four slogans will also be given out. For sale will be condom and abstinence valentines and condom novelties. Students will be able to enter the contest to guess the number of Hershey's Kisses in a "kiss jar." The person with the closest guess will win the entire jar of Hershey's Kisses. "Well ness of Wheels," a portable display, will contain pamphlets regarding subjects like sexually transmitted diseases, safe sex and alcohol. Available at the table will be true/false quizzes, condom quizzes and STD quizzes to help educate stUdents. Arthur Con Mateo Mackbee, Peer Health Educator and captain of the team sponsoring the event, states that there will be new activities this year and old activities that won't be continued. "This year we're going to try to put together at least two panels that have college specific facts about STD's and alcohol related incidents." A dance won't be held this year because of time restraints. Condom roses won't be sold either. Last year the Peer Health Educators made the roses themselves which took a Jot of time. The condom roses were later patented. When Mackbee was asked how well he thought the program worked towards educating students he replied, "I think it works as a whole ...just for them to see all the brochures and the Well ness on Wheels gets their minds thinking if it's just for one day." Mackbee believes that having the program on Valentine's Day increases student's awareness, "It usually is a good turnout because people have love on their minds." Mackbee also states that, ''It helps to have candy and people will always come to get condoms." ''There are a variety of people who come to the table and ask questions and take brochures," Mackbee stated. The- program is "aimed at all the students but mostly the traditional age students." The vote was 55%, or 101 students for staying in UC, and 45%, or 82 students against. Representatives from the United Council were at Parkside during the vote. Her words began this year's tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. entitled "Remember His Dream," held noon Wednesday, Jan 25, in Main Place. The event consisted of music, poetry, speeches, and applause. In Jackson's introduction of this commemorative, she cautioned the audience not to just follow King's advisive dream that day, but to continue further, his dream in the generations to come. "His dream is possible," she said. The program lasted forty-fi ve minutes. The Voices of Parkside and the Parkside Chorale, under the direction of Dr. James Kinchen, sang two selections which celebrate African-American themes. The first piece was entitled "Ujima," and the latter was called "Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning." Dr. Kinchen, in reference to the second song, said, "In other words, be ready ..' He said that this song is a spiritual song. "Christian journey soon be over; the time is drawing nigh," is a line from the song that illustrated the urgency of racial harmony. "I enjoyed it. I really enjoyed it," said Faith Augustine, after stating that she was asked to sjng Glenn E. Burleigh's piece. "I love the song because it expresses exactly what we need to know - not necessarily as one group of people, but as the world." She noted that if everyone sees what everyone has in common with everyone instead of differences, people would get along. Mark Lewis, a student of Parkside, recited two poems - "Shadows in the Darkness" and "My People:' Each poem stressed a powerful theme that should be observed closer. In "My People," Lewis warned the audience of low self- esteem, indicating that it causes violence, and then said that if people have high self-esteem, they will also have high estecm for one another - eventually coming together. A quote from the poem reads, "If some of us don't get our act togeLher, we will lose our existence ... My people, get it together, and we must get it right." In his first poem, Lewis talked of existence, but in ignorance: 'There's no difference in the total darkness," began the first line. I, 1995. "All previous attempts at recycling were just warm-ups .or this· the real thing," according to Bill Niebhur, Director of the Parkside Union. Niebbur explained that the campus waste stream and compliance to the new law will be monitored by our trash and recyclable contractor, Go of Wisconsin/Land Reclamation Company ,LRC) of Racine. According to Neibhur there are two alernents to the food service area \·ec'y~ling problem. The first is to simply get people to do it according to the signs .hat h~ve been provided. 'i- Snowmobile accident by Brian Matsen On Friday, January 20, at approximately 10:30 p111. a male in his late twenties was involved in a snowmobile accident on UW~Parkside property. The UW-P police department was unauthorized to give the injured man's name. On Hwy E. cast of Hwy JR, the victim was knocked off of his snowmobile while passing through the Parkside baseball field parking lot. He didn't see the chain separating the 101 from the field, said Chief Robert Deane. People walking by notified the UW-P police, and an officer administered first aid. The injured man was brought to 51. Catherine's Hospital by ambulance, where his condition was unknown. No further information was given and an investigation is still pending. UWPAC124 Ranger News Text Any textual data included in the document volume 23, Issue 18 Parkside responds to tragedy by Karen Diehl News Editor Carol Lee Saffioti-Hughes, Professor of English and Associate Chair of the English Department at UW-Parkside, is currently recovering from the Jan. 31 car accident which injured her and killed her z.year-old daughter. Safficti-Hughes suffered broken ribs and a broken collar bone and is still in intensive care at Doyne Hospital in Milwaukee. The accident occurred at the intersection of Ryan Road and 27th Street in Franklin. Saffioti-Hughes was taking her daughter, Autumn, to child care before reporting to work. The accident occurred at 7:40 am when her car, westbound on Ryan Road, collided with a minivan travelling south on 27th street. Saffioti-Hughes has been through surgery to repair her broken bones. Her recovery time is expected to be short, perhaps 2-3 weeks. She remains in ICU, and will probably be there until early next week. Until that time, people are urged to refrain from calling the hospital. The UW-Parkside community has begun responding to Carol Lee's tragedy. A memorial fund is to be set up at Children's Hospital in Autumn's name, as is another fund through Educator's Credit Union. Students in Dr. Safficti- Hughes' Advanced Expository Writing class are sending cards and poems reflecting their support and sympathy. Tanya Melendez, a student in the class, said, "l thought it was important for us to get together and show her our thoughts are with her." Other students on campus have expressed similar feelings. The Parks ide Student Government Association sent a card to Dr. Saffioti-Hughes. Jennifer Buchholz, President of PSGA, said, "As we all know, this was a tragic incident. I think I speak for all students in wishing her a quick recovery. I also send my deepest sympathies in her loss. I hope she knows how much this event has impacted the students. Marable says, 'Multiculturalism pays! by Tabitha Brown Staff Writer Before a group of students, staff, and other community members, Dr. Manning Marable, Director of Columbia University's Institute for Research in African American Studies, spoke on the topic of campus racism Tuesday January 31 in Parkside's Union 104. In his lecture, entitled "Blueprint for Uprooting Discrimination in America's Colleges, Marable asserted that an appreciation of history is important because "it gives us a sense of who we are ...this special consciousness lets us know who we really are." Marable noted that most students aren't given a good cultural balance in their education. "You are culturally deficient if you don't read African American literature," Marable stated, "or studyAfrican American sociologists." One form of prejudice that Marable noted as prevalent on many campuses is that which deals with assumptions about scholarships. "Only two percent of all scholarships are designated for African Americans in the United States," he stated. Marable said that- many non-minority students believe that a great number of scholarships are designated for African American students. "Many argue that scholarships for minority students is a form of reverse discrimination," Marable stated. Marable used the example of legacy scholarships which are earmarked for the sons of Harvard University graduates. An astonishing forty-four percent of those admitted to Harvard are financed with the aid of legacy dollars. "Only when scholarships are awarded to African Americans or Latinos do we see a problem." A sweeping trend that Marable notices on college campuses across the U.S. is a growing pattern of discrimination. "What we see is a growth of institutional discrimination." The immense decrease in the number of young students of color in our inner city who aren't receiving an adequate I education is one of the items that Marable cites as unfortunate. He stated that this is attributable to "the new segregation between the educated haves, and the semi-educated have nots.' "Racism is an invisible tax against the labor power, creativity, and intellect of people of color," Marable stated when detailing the different forms of poverty. Regarding financial poverty he stated that most of the individuals who live in poverty are not people of color. Marable said that the problems of the 1990's are far more sophisticated. "We need to understand that the challenges ahead require a different vision," he said. As a political activist and social critic, Marable stated, "we must have the courage to search for common ground to advance toward ideals of a democracy without discrimination." Manning Marable He stated that we have to build a new kind of leadership. Marable, who writes a nationally published column entitled "Along the Color Line," said in his speech that "the historic color line will be reversed for African Americans." This notion of reversal relates to his ideas about the post-modern discourse presently in effect which is essentiaJIy racism without responsibility. "To relate to people you need to know something about their history and their culture," he stated. Without these components he says that two individuals cannot have an honest conversation. One final thought that Dr. Marable expressed was, "muliculturalism pays." UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN.PARKSIDE February 9, 1995 Multicultural education a priority by Pamela Bradshaw Staff Writer , .... ~.::.., The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs in conjunction with the Ethnic Studies Center received a $2000 grant from the UW System to fund a Faculty Development in Multicultural Education Program. The grant was awarded to accomplish the goals in the Design for Diversity Program. The money will be split between five courses submitted by instructors. Two courses all ready accepted are a class in Cross- Cultural Psychology and a business course entitled ''The Changing Workplace." According to Anthony Brown, Director of the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, the purpose of the grant is to "get faculty members that do not have courses that are under the diversity requirement involved in the Design for Diversity and enhance their 'course.' The professors who receive the grants can use to funding to go to a conference, buy a computer program for a class, buy more books and reading materials or anything that fulfills the goals of the Design for Diversity program. The Design for Diversity program, started in 1988 by the then President Shaw of the Uw-System. was created to increase the presence of American Indian, African American, Asian American and LatinolHispanic students, faculty and staff in UW institutions. "Generally we have met all of the goals for Design for Diversity," Brown stated, also citing that Parkside has the second highest percentage of minority students in the UW system. UW-Milwaukee has the highest percentage. "We fortunately have received many grants from different areas over the last five years," said Brown. The current grant is the second received from the UW -System. -The office was also awarded a grant from the Wisconsin Humanities Council that is being used to fund speakers. Two presentations were given last semester and two more will take place this April. One of the speakers will be discussing Chinese Culture and its relation to dance and tradition. The free lecture will take place on April 21 following the Multicultural Center's awards ceremony. More information will be announced regarding the lectures as the dates grow nearer. Brown feels that cultural education is important for students entering a work force much more diverse than it was twenty years ago. "If we could get every department to have one course in diversity, then that would really open up the world to all the students on campus." Chancellor's inaugural activities by Pamela Bradshaw Staff Writer "University and Community: Moving Together into the 21 st Century" will be the theme for the inauguration ofPaI'kside's fourth Chancellor, Eleanor 1. Smith. The inauguration will be held on Saturday, April 1,_ at J 0 am in the Communication Arts Theater. Following the inauguration will be a reception and luncheon in Main Place. Other weekend activities will include a presentation of Chancellor Smith's work on Friday, March 31, and a University open house on Saturday, April 1, from 1:30to 3:30pm. The Friday presentation will be a concert written by Chancellor Smith entitled "Black Heritage: History, Music and Dance." The music will be from various periods of black history. It will be directed by Professor James Kinchen and performed by members of the UW-Parkside community and its environs. "I've always performed the concerts so it will be nice to see what somebody else does with it and I can sit there and look at it being performed and that will be very exciting," said Chancellor Smith, about the performance. The open house on Saturday will have displays, demonstrations and activities presented by the different departments, centers and programs at the University. Among the displays will be the architectural design for the proposed expansion of the physical education and housing buildings. Chancellor Smith encourages students to attend the inauguration because she thinks "they are a very important part of the community." The Chancellor states that one of her goals is "to open up this institution to the community and say we are a part of this community and you are a part of us." All the events will be free except for the luncheon which will cost $8 per person. The luncheon is subsidized by the university, but it couldn't cover the entire cost. Students will need to pick up tickets for the inauguration because space is limited. When and where the tickets will be available will be announced at a later time. iifK~. She explained that the second stage of becoming a battered woman is done through emotions. A "constant mirage of verbal abuse" grows in time and it "affects a shift of thinking," she observed. "I don't care who you are, ... if I lock you up with someone who calls you names, he'll destroy your soul," she said. Carpenter told the audience that domestic violence is taught, for example, in literature. She noted that there are books which foster the notion that if a woman loves a troubled man and helps him, he'll change for the better. This notion, Carpenter explained, is as harmful as the tradition that places the needs of the husband and child first before her own according to Carpenter. It frustrated Carpenter that in the last thirty years, domestic violence has not changed, and that people only take notice of its magnitude "after we see some woman's dead and bloody body on TV." Carol Engberg, volunteer coordinator of Parkside's volunteer program was also present. She spoke of a collaboration of the Women's Horizon's Inc., Kenoshans Against Sexual Assault (KASA), and Carpenter's Domestic Violence Project to offer training to become a shelter supervisor for battered women, and advocate assistant, or a children's program assistant. I in Union 104, Colleen Carpenter, program coordinator for the Domestic Violence Project in Kenosha, spoke on "Stopping Domestic Violence" - beginning one of seven various Soup & Substance Lectures, sponsored by the Parkside Activities Board and the Lecture and Fine Arts Committee. Carpenter, working with battered women for the past ten years and an activist in the women's movement for a previous seven to eight years, began with an observation. "On some level. we are all battered women," she said. She asked that we consider typical high school bullies or other people who tended to control situations. She stated that the behavior exhibited by these people is all about power. She also asserted that power without responsibility is dangerous. Carpenter urged that "if I communicate nothing else [during this talk. it] is not to fall in love with someone who batters you." She was sad to inform the audience that battered women who exhibit low self-esteem have been placed in a system that is labeled as "others." She also said that this label is first ushered upon the women by isolation. Carpenter went on to explain that "She" gives up parts of her life to make the husband happy. "She" stdps hanging around friends and acquaintances who her husband. doesn't like. "She" tries as hard as she can to please him. but it is never enough or she is doing something wrong. Carpenter stated that the woman always falls short of his expectations, and that this is done purposefully. "Batterers are like addicts," Carpenter said ~ never satisfied. The husband's amount of control is by Brian Matsen Staff Writer On behalf of Parkside's Activity Board (PAB), Diane Welsh, the assistant director of student life and director of university activities, recently applied for a grant from Arts Midwest. By her initiative, the Accent on Enrichment series at Parkside has received a $960 grant from this institution. This funding will directly cover touring artist and performance fees. Welsh observed that the Accent on Enrichment has been around since the 1%9 founding of Uw-Parksioe. The series was originally entitled, The Lecture Fine Arts Series, and it has always been a part of Parkside. The program's primary focus has been diversity. "The mission of the Uw-Parkside Accent on Enrichment Series," Welsh said, "is to present a high quality series of performing Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens to perfonn saxophones, drums, electrical guitars, and a synthesizer. The group has displayed their talent throughout the world, including Europe, Japan, and Australia, as the Queens have performed choreographed dance routines with their harmonies and by the mighty sound of Mahlathini 's characteristic voice, which is said to resemble a lion's roar. Smith, came to an end - finishing a nation-wide comprehensive search for a UW-Parkside Vice Chancellor/Provih'il. Of this search, over 135 applications were received, and the chair of this search, David J. Wright, associate professor of finance, was relieved to have the search go as well as it did. "Acting on behalf of the University," states the committee's mission statement, "the Committee will present to the Chancellor a slate of candidates for the position of Vice Chancellor/Provost who possess the skills, qualifications, and values necessary to serve and significantly advance the University's mission." Again, Wright was very pleased with the progress of the committee and looked forward towards the future months. "They worked very hard," he said, Their collective goal began in November to fulfill this mission. Phase one was to construct a job description position for the position of Vice Chancellor. They then various advertisements in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Black Issues in Higher Education, Women's Review of Books, and Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education, implementing a recruitment plan to produce a rich, diverse pool of qualified candidates. "Diversity," Wright said, is the "very key to our university." Among the professional and personal qualifications requested, was "a strong academic background with an earned terminal degree," appropriate administrative experience including experience in program planning and budgetary management," and possessing "strong oral, written, analytical, and interpersonal skills." In addition to the university's advertising and personal networking, direct mail announcements were sent to 2,200 organizations. Among them were Presidents, Chancellors, and Vice Chancellors of Wisconsin colleges and universities, independent of the UW system or not, members of Black, Hispanic, and Women's Caucuses, and the American Association of Universities. In phase two, the screening of these applicants are taking place - discussing with each candidate their background, re-evaluating their qualifications, and telephoning their references to check their credibility. In addition to Days, a 1990 graduate in sociology, the other members of the panel were Jerry Baldwin, Jr., a 1987 graduate in mechanical engineering; and Charles Raine, a ]992 graduate in economics. So, bow do you find the job of your dreams? Baldwin said that he made opportunities for himself because he he learned quickly, making himself more valuable. "There were great opportunities in my job that were not initially apparent. Lots of things I didn't think I'd do," he said. One member of the audience, Margaret Wright said it was great that the alumni came back for the discussion. "It was a good panel," Wright said. New senators announced Noose hung over student's bed it has been said that McClellend had hung a noose over the beds of roommates that he had in the past. Triplet! felt especially threatened because he saw the incident as racially motivated. Triplett is upset that "the other incidents in the past involving Steve [McClellend] were looked over and the situations worsened." He had reported difficulties about his roommate since last semester. At present Triplett has been removed from his room with McClellend and placed into another unit. Sonya said, since last September, she has experienced nothing but positive surroundings and attitudes with this university. by Tabitha Brown Staff Writer After the weekend of February 4. 1995, Marlon Triplett, a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, returned to his room in the housing unit the following Monday to find a noose hung over his bed. "I wish to bring to your attention an incident that shocked me, made me very upset, and had me in fear of my life," Triplett wrote in a letter to Steve McLaughlin, dean of students. In addition to the noose hanging over his bed, Triplett found a note that he considered threatening on his dresser. It is alleged that his roommate, Steve McClellend, is responsible for both incidents. There was another occasion in which Triplett felt less than secure in his living situation with McCleliend. In the living room of their unit hung a poster with a note on it which read, "two down. but one to go." Tuition is no bargain, study finds UW-Parkside, Carthage address need for teachers of color A study of UW System tuition rates shows that UW System tuition is already near the median of peer institutions, not below the median as previous studies have shown. The study, conducted by the United Council of UW Student Governments, is based on data released last week by the UW System Administration, which compared the UW System to other university systems. The study shows that average four-year in-state UW tuition is very near the median of peer systems. The UW System average 1994-95 tuition is $4.895, and the low is the University of Texas system at $1,458. "This study debunks the misconception that UW tuition is lower than it should be. Our tuition is very close the median. salaries are at the median, and administrative costs are below the median. students are paying their fair share." said David C. Stacy, President of United Council. The study also shows that Wisconsin has much higher out- of-state tuition than most other states. While tuition is near the median of peer institutions, high out-of-state tuition is keeping in- state tuition below the average. At four-year UW System institutions. out-of-state tuition is more than $700 above the median. The average UW System out-of- state tuition is $5,003 compared to the median of $4.290. "The Board of Regents has clearly had a policy of raising tuition levels for out-of-state students to keep tuition levels lower for in-state. This policy improves access for Wisconsin residents," Stacy said. The UW System study also found that the cost of educating students in the UW System is significantly lower than the average among peer systems. "Education costs are lower in Wisconsin than in other states. It is because we have been more efficient here in Wisconsin that our tuition levels are not as high as systems such as the University of Massachusetts system and the Pennsylvania State University system," Stacy said. in grades 1-6 in schools in southeastern Wisconsin. Deane's experience also includes work with an armed robbery unit, serving on the staff of the Deputy Chief of the Criminal Investigation Bureau, and operating as Executive Lieutenant of the Homicide section and Lieutenant of the Narcotics Intelligence Unit. He is also a current member fthe United States rmy Reserve, and served seven months in Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm. Deane has a Bachelor's degree from Wayne State University in Criminal Justice, a Master's degree from the University of Detroit in Security Administration, and is currently a Doctoral Candidate in dministration and Higher Education at Wayne State University. When Deane took over as UW-Parkside's Chief of Police, he began "making the transition from big city, On Monday, August 15, Robert L. Deane took over as Chief of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Campus Police. Deane officially replaced David Ostrowski, who resigned last October. Thomas Knitter served as interim chief from October 4, 1993 to August 14, 1994. Former Chief Knitter Deane is from Detroit, Michigan, where he had served on the Detroit Police Department. Deane's most municipal policing." Deane acknowledges that the approach of law enforcement used in a big city. such as Detroit, will not work in a small university setting. He stated, "Big city tactics will not work here; they will not be used here." Another of Chief Deane's present concerns is the budget cut that is forecast for the near future. Deane's strategy is to "streamline" the police department and provide the best service with less resources. Deane commented, "We've already begun tightening our belts." The policy of police handguns at UW-Parkside is that officers do not carry arms on their person, but rather have them locked in a strongbox in their cars. Deane wishes to make no change to this policy. "In no sense is this a reflection of the ability or qualification of our officers," he stated. Rather it is, "based on the needs and policy of this university." Deane also mentioned that the officers here at UW-Parkside are fully-certified police officers with full arrest powers, not just "rent-a-cops" or security Robert L. Deane guards. Deane wants UW-Parkside police to be more than just law-enforcement. He oommented, "The university police are here to assist students in any and all ways." Some of the services that will still be offered under Deane's leadership are police escorts, and assisting students locked out of their cars or out of gas. Deane hopes to provide "approachable, friendly aid in times of need." He stated, "My door is always open." Hit-and-Run in Commj Arts Parking Lot The University Police and Public Safety Department needs your assistance in locating a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run accident. On Friday, September 2, at approximately 3:30 prn, two Concerns Arise Over 2% Technology Tuition Increase. parked vehicles in the Comm Arts Parking Lot were struck, causing considerable damage to the parked vehicles. The offending vehicle left the scene travelling North on Outer Loop Road. The by Karen Diehl News Editor Parkside's Student Government Association (pSGA) is concerned with this hike in tuition. In June, the United Council unanimously passed a resolution which voiced many of their concerns about the proposed increase. Some of these concerns were: the lack of discrimination between different campuses . technology needs, the lack of student control of budget allocation, and the isolation of student leaders from the On August 18, the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents passed a bUdget request which contained provisions for a 2% annual increase in tuition. This increase woul d be used as a Special Technology Fee to help bridge the "technology gap" that has arisen in the UW System. The United Council ofUW Student Governments, which includes offending vehicle is described as a full-size, brown, possibly two-tone, Ford pick-up truck. Damage to the offending vehicle wi1llikely be to the driver's side front bumper and the passenger side rear decision-making process. It was noted in the resolution that "All UW Institutions are not at the same place on the Technological ladder. Students should have the freedom to decide what technology is needed at their particular institution." The current proposal does not account for this. Parkside's Student Government passed its own resolution on May 6. Concerns raised were similar to those of the United quarter of the truck. Anyone having information about this accident or any other crime on campus is asked to contact the University Police and Public Safety Department at 595- Council. PSGA was also worried about tbe lack of a "sunset" clause- there was no cut-off date when this 2% annual increase would end. David Stacy, president of the United Council had similar cares. He stated, "The ongoing tuition surcharge means that technology funding for the UW System will be the sole responsibility of the students, now and forever." Jennifer Buchholz, President of PSG A, stated, 2455. "Your help is needed in order to maintain a safe campus," said UW-Parkside Police officials. "The general feeling is that we do support a technology fund. We just don't support the manner in which it has been done." Despite the concern of the Student Governments, the budget proposal, with the technology fee included, wss passed by the Board of Regents. From here, the proposal goes on to State Legislature where it will be finalized. The Chancellor shared her goals for UW-Parkside in her convocation address. Smith wants to build on Parkside's "solid foundation" of the past 25 years. In this way, Parkside will be ready to enter the 21st century. Chancellor Eleanor Smith gave her first convocation address to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on August 31. American Politics Focus of UW-Parkside Evening Classes Tuition, continued discussed during "The Election of 1994" will include the politics of property tax relief, the Wisconsin Congressional elections, and state and national campaign funding. Samuel Pernacciaro, associate professor of political science at UW-Parkside, will be the instructor for both classes. "American Politics" will cover various areas including electoral college reform, the 1992 presidential election and state budget politics. Topics own student records, upgrading existing computer labs, creating new labs and provide staffing for them, and purchasing a minicomputer for student internet access and electronic mail. Parkside has already offered a plan as to where this money could be used. Such plans include a network of computer "kiosks" which students could use to access campus information and their is approved, the money will be distributed throughout the UW System, probably by student population. This means that larger schools would gain more of the fund than smaller ones. UW- OMSA Open House and lemonade. Adames- Petty, Coordinator of Retention Services, said the open house was a success because of its informality. "It was great to see the Chancellor there and to hear the wide varieties of conversation going on," Adames-Petty said.
