Organizing the events of National Chemistry Week is one way he has found to do this. For the last two years Prof.Wheeler has served as the chairman of the commit- I tee responsible for the events of National Chemistry Week in our nine county area. National Chemistry Week is an event which grew out of National Chemistry Day which was initiated by the American Chemical Society overa decade ago. National I Chemistry Day began as an ~ttempt to shine a positive light on chemistry, to show peoplehow their lives have benefitted from advance- ments in chemistry, and to givethem a basic "chemical literacy." Nowthe events of National Chemistry Week are largely i geared toward peaking the mterest of grade school and I highschool students. Prof. I Wheeler, along with volun- teers from UW-Milwaukee Marquette, Carroll College: and Parkside, made the week I a fun and memorable learn- ingexperience for the 3700 kidswho attended the festiv- ities which took place at Discovery World in lIil waukee. I Prof. Wheeler also orga- nized a number of other lJnaginativeand educational activities. Three local high ~hools participated in Dale Wheeler Professor of Chemistry at UW-Parkside National Mole Day (Oct. 23rd) and the winning high school, Washington Park in Racine, will be visited by a team from CHEM-TV, a pro- gram put out by Dow Chemical Company to pro- mote chemistry. In a compe- tition called Elements of Our World, also organized by Prof. Wheeler, grade .school classes each picked an ele- ment from the Periodic Table and described why it is important to the world. In another competition, Battle of the Burets, 50 high school students, in teams of two, took part in a titrating com- petition. Finally, as part of a "Chemistry Buddies Program," high school stu- dents visited grade schools and helped the younger kids carry out simple chemistry experiments. These programs and activi- ties all have one thing in common: they promote an interest in science in general and chemistry in particular. They also promote a wonder- ful spirit of cooperation and teamwork. Prof. Wheeler's work with these programs has been of great benefit to students in Southeastern Wisconsin. He says of his work with area schools: llWe are a communi- ty-based university and we should be involved in the community ... .1 guess I have embraced that role and I like it .. .1 like to allow people an opportunity to learn some- thing if they want to." ESTABLISHED 1972 Con Artists • Derek Bishop Staff Writer Purchasing swampland in Florida, fast money-making schemes, and get-rich-quick offers are just some of the sales pitches that are with- drawing money from the pockets of the numerous uninformed. Basically, these "Con" methods take your money and leave like a one- night stand. Recently, university offi- cials have been notified that several Parkside students have become a part of a "bogus" company called Fortune in Motion (Suite 601-1001 West Broadway; Vancouver, British Columbia, V6B 4Hl Canada, (604) 731-0737). Individuals are lured through sales meetings which are held throughout the state (WI) to invest money with an individual broker. The person invest- ing the money actually becomes a customer of the broker, who in turn, is encouraged to go out and recruit other people with the intent that the investor will eventually become a broker and qualify for low priced travel trips . Usually nobody profits in this "pyramid structured" scheme except for the bro- ker. The investor is left with recourse, because the com- pany does not actually hold the money; the broker con- trols the money. It is consid- ered a chain distribution scheme. The Justice Department for the State of Wisconsin has filed a lawsuit against this company but no trial date has yet been scheduled. The Justice Department reflects that the company has violated the Agriculture Trade and Consumer Protection Administrative Code #122. The department also states that anybody who continues to do business with Fortune in Motion does so at their own risk. And any individual who feels that he or she has been vic- timized by this investment scheme should seek legal counsel. Smile for a Child • Derek Bishop Staff Writer Two major status organi- zations of Parkside have spread the good cheer by col- lecting donated toys for needy children. Latinos Unidos and the Black Student Union have gath- ered numbers again for the Second Annual Smile For A Child organization. The sophomore crusade debuted in November of 1994 which allowed the organizations time to prepare for each upcoming ho-ho season. When most clubs channel their energy to the Parkside campus the two organiza- tions have gone against the grain, "The program (Smile for a Child) united the two clubs and strives to benefit the communities of Kenosha and Racine", said BSU-SOC Representative, Greg Jones. Two children are all smiles thanks to the efforts of Latinos Unidos and Black Student Union. The cooperative clubs established numerous loca- tions throughout the Parks ide campus and col- lected toys from November 20 to December 16. "Last year, we donated over 200 toys to the Spanish Center and the Lincoln Center of Kenosha," stated Latinos Unidos Secretary and Chairperson for the Project, Angelita Garcia. "This year, the groups have donated about 200 toys to the Love and Charity Mission in Racine and the Safe House in Kenosha." PSGA U'pdate: Resignations and elections at 12/15 meeting • Kristine Hansen News Editor Parkside Student Government Association met on December 15, 1995 and closed out the semester with a series of elections and resolutions for the New Year. Tom Belongia shocked fel- low PSGAers by announcing his resignation as Senator effective February 2. "I don't feel I can serve the students of the university. I hope the Senate can move on to more important issues. Let's move on to the students," said Belongia. Belongia would like to con- tinue working with legisla- tive affairs in Student Government after February 2. Tyson Wilda was elected and sworn in as PSGA Vice- President and resigned from his Senator position. Steven Zieman resigned from his Senator position effective January 16 due to work conflicts. Two new Senators were nominated to replace Wilda and Zieman. PSGA President 'Ibm Richie opened the meeting with reports from the Facilities and Planning Committee, Transportation Committee, and Career Planning Committee. The Facilities and Planning Committee is looking for ways to reorganize space and will begin touring class- rooms soon. One PSGA member is working as part of the Transportation Committee by putting together a survey on usage of the Racine Bus and Kenosha Transit. Richie stated that the Kenosha Transit recently came down from $90,000 to about $80,000. The Career and Planning Committee is recruiting Kenosha and Racine high school students and has talked with Chancellor Eleanor Smith about sup- porting the Student Health Services move which some faculty are against. Tyson Wilda said, "The response time isn't realistically going to go'down due to the move." Wilda was originally against the move. Teri Jacobson, President Pro Tern and Chair of SUFAC, reported on the Search and Screen Committee, which is in the process of reviewing resumes and setting up interviews for a computer management technician position who will spend half of his/her time manning the computer assistant desk and the other half of his/her time hosting workshops for students and faculty. PSGA Senator Karen Diehl suggested Campus Police be asked to reevalu- ate their responsibilities toward housing students. "When any student needs help from Campus Police, they need approval from DeAnn Stone," said Diehl. Stone is the Director of Residence Life and can not always be reached during weeknights or weekends. "They have the authority to write tickets but they can't get your keys out," said one PSGA member, referring to students locking their keys in their cars. Some of the emergency phones are not working. However, this is not an inauguration. Faculty and some students may remember the paper because of its inconsistent publishing since 1991. English professors Pamela Gilbert and Alan Shucard haveagreed to serve as advi- sors to The First Amend- ment. With the motto "Read our paper even if you can't find ouroffice,"current Editor-in- Chief Pam Bradshaw and Managing Editor Ron Mulder have been rationing their $440.00 budget while searching for an office. They recently have secured the WLBRradio station room in the Parkside Union. Bradshaw and Mulder were told by S.O.C. President Nathan Piper that S.O.C. will not allow them to create a facsimile paper to compete with The Ranger News. "It [The First Amend- ment] started as a serious newspaper that quickly degenerated to a humor forum," explained Bradshaw. Mulder added that, "[Now] the purpose is to provide stu- dents with news regarding Parkside, the UW system, plus state and federal legis- lation affecting students. It is also intended to be a seri- ous editorial forum for stu- dent news." The First Amendment was started -by Jeff Woosley in 1991 as a monthly newspa- per. Parkside student Arian Adair-Nichols attempted to revive the paper last year. "The plan would have worked, but the people did not. Originally, we had hoped it would be a self-suffi- cient newspaper," said Adair- Nichols. "It's going to be of everything else," said Mulder of the alternative page. Also, there will be free classifieds and advertising space available for cam- pus organizations. There, 1 said it....ha~py now? 1don t know about any of you, but don't you find this whole Santa Claus thing we're still feeding our youth a bit psychotic? 1 think we're seriously screwing with the minds of these trusting young people. Consider this, we tell these gullible children that Santa works only one night to deliver gifts to all the children around the world on Christmas Eve. Now, 1don't know about any of you, but when -I was a kia 1 thought Santa was some kind of work- aholic freak when my parents told me that one. Then we tell kids that Santa only deliv- ers to the "good"chil- dren and that he's always watching them. Santa is sounding a bit like he could be arrest- ed for stalking with that line of bull. What about telling these children that he comes down the chim- ney? Well, when 1 was about seven 1wondered how Santa was going to shimmy his butt down my chimney because it was cemented shut and just used as a decora- tion. Let's not forget the "Santa has reindeer that can fly" bull . They have no winEf" but they can fly. When 1was young, my broth- er Peter and cousin Butchie thought that if reindeer could fly with- out wings then so could they. They both jumped out of the sec- ond story window of our house on Christmas Eve because my mother and aunt told them that they thought they just saw Santa and his more cash from that damned fairy. My mother used to tell me it was because he was older. What the hell did that have to do with anything, 1 thought? 1later found out that my brother was scamming one of the two quarters that mom used to put under my pillow. Anyway, back to the matter at hand. Three Big Lies reindeer overhead. Yes, they're both okay and today our family still tells that story to embarrass them (like I'm doing now), but when you're six or seven years old and the adults you trust tell you such sensationalis- tic stories in a very believable way, you can make a few errors in judgement, like hurling your body out of a win- dow. Not me. 1knew pretty early on that they were lying. Toget even, I'd play an occasional joke on them. When 1was eight 1 snuck under the Christmas tree and rearranged all of the name tags on the gifts. So, that year dad received a "Beach Malibu Barbie" and my brother got a bra. Does anyone remem- ber the Easter Bunny? At least Santa was human, but with this lie we're telling kids that a fricken bunny is toting baskets full of chocolate all over the country leaving them on the dressers of chil- dren who believe. Where did this bunny come from anyway? And what does he have to do with this very religious holiday? My best friend Donna, who is now a doctor and owns her own practice . recalled to me that sh~ was always petrified of rabbits when she was a child after having been bitten by a wild one, yet her parents still told her that the Easter Bunny was going to sneak into her room on Easter morning. She told me that she was scared sh--Iess and used to set all kinds of elaborate traps to try and stop the blood hun- gry bunny from reach- mg her bed. Parents don't realize how scary some of these fictitious characters can be to a child. Haven't you ever seen a screaming child who was scared out of his/her little mind when he/she sat on Santa's lap? 1would be too, have you seen some of tliese Santa wannabee's? He's a stranger who usually reeks of the egg roll he recently ate in the mall courtyard on one of his "Santa breaks" and is always looking at his watch to determine when he and his rein- deer can go home and heat up a TV dinner and pop an X-rated movie m the VCR Talk about tall tales, what about the ridicu- lous tale of the "Tooth Fairy". Now, this is a completely useless lie. What's the point? Just tell your kid to give you the tooth and you'll give them the money. \\2J.y lie? When my brother and sisters and I lost our teeth as we were grow- ing, we were told, as are most of our youth, to put the tooth under our respective pillows and the tooth fairy would put some cash in place of the "missing body part" while we slept (think about what we re doing here ... money for a body part). 1can remember many a night with that half- bloody tooth under my pillow just waiting for this fairy with her bag of cash to appear. 1never did see her but my mother assured me that she was real. 1 remember wondering why the tooth fairy always gave my trou- ble-makmg brother more money than me. 1 couldn't figure this bitch out. Are you listening? Inthe lane, snow is ...HEY! Are you listening? You never listen to anything I say. And even when I ring sleigh bells-big, loud, nasty honkin' sleigh bells-you're off someplace else. And just like that, a simple Christmas carol is transformed into a lively argument. Arguments are healthy, though. It keeps the road of communication open, even if it's a rough one. But when the road is closed-or when carolers at the door provoke night long fights-it's probably time to re-evaluate your situation. I'd like to get through my half of the column with as few Neil Sedaka references as possible (column column down, doobie doo ~own down), but they say that breaking up is hard to do. (They talk a lot, don't they?) Anything that once greatly enhanced your life, i.e., playoff games, a twenty dollar bill, your soul mate, is going to cause you despair when they're lost. Unless your team didn't even make it to the playoffs. Man buys ring, woman throws it away. Same damn thing happens everyday. But some couples have more at stake than others, and these matters ("we're married, and she's the rich one") further complicate things. Divorces are expensive, involve lawyers, and are generally ugly. Children become pawns in their parents' wicked games. Even when it's strictly physical, there's still something missing afterwards-the other person. Ifyou've learned anything from this column over this semester, it is that men are rational and women are ...not. However, all rationality gets thrown out the window-along with all the little things to remember her by-just before the relationship does. When a relationship collapses on itself, it leaves an enormous and powerful black hole that sucks in everything and makes everything suck. I generally do not actively advocate the termination of any relationship, because if! didn't want to be in a relationship, I wouldn't have put myself there in the first place. Communication heals all wounds. But how do you talk when both the man and woman have gone bonkers? How can you resolve a situation that will not change? Removing yourself from the situation works, and this allows you to divert your time to such healthy activities as revenge, moping, aggressive driving, drinking alone, Nine Inch Nails, and looking for Miss Rebound. Hey! Time for some male bonding, household projects, or automotive repair. A real man would incorporate all three into one, in addition to a few of the healthy activities defined above. Hey! Wonder what's on TV? Look!' You've got the remote, although a real man would have had the remote all along. And you can break wind for as long and as loud as you like. Isn't life grand? Of course life is grand! It's great to be alive! Just keep telling yourself that. Ifyou were an awesome writer, but had to move on with your life and abandon your column for The Real World, she wouldn't dream of continuing it with someone else! You are irreplaceable! Tank Girl: It's stupid. It's obnoxious. It's not even all that clever. But sometimes stupid, obnoxious and not clever are just what we need. Die Hard 3: Someday Hollywood will run out of ways to use this formula. The third installment in the series is beginning to wear it Since this is the last issue ofthe Ranger for this year, and since I am the theoretical entertainment guru ofthe paper, it must be time to present my top 10 lists for 1995. At least I'll get a jump of a week or so on everyone else who will be doing it in the coming weeks. Here we go. Top 10 Movies of the Year Goldeneye: Bond is back, and he's still fun in the PC 90's. " Karen Diehl Breaking up sucks. Whether you're the one doing the breakfng or the one, er, being broken, It s rarely a pleasant expenence. Like a root canal. Or finals week. Or a pelvic exam. Eew. One ofthe funny things about ending a relationship is that the responsibility for the break-up always falls into the hands of the person who brings it up first. I don't care how nice the ending was, there's always a "dumper" and a "dum pee." "It was a mutual decision" is just a nice way of saying, "He dumped me before I had a chance to dump him." And people know this! Have you ever said, "It was mutual," to someone? Do you know what their first response is? Something like, "Oh ... so, are you okay with it? Is he okay with it? Who started it?" They want to know who got dumped! Although I personally don't have a whole lot of experience in this category, being the "dumper" can't be much fun. Let's face it, at least 90% of the time when a relationship ends, one of the 2 parties involved isn't happy about it. So, if you're the "dumper", you're pretty much taking someone else's emotional state into your own hands - and then squishing it. Yeah, that'd make me feel like turning cartwheels. Being the "dum pee" isn't any picnic, either. If you're at the receiving end of a break-up, thin, but it still works. Crimson Tide: High seas drama featuring brilliant performances by Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman. Desperado: Not quite as good as its low budget prequel, El Mariachi, but tons of fun with Antonio Banderas. Mallrats: Another sequel that doesn't quite live upto the cult status of the original, but stays amusing with its humor for Generation X. The Professional: An action movie with a twisted moral sense and an unusual tale offamily values. Kids: A much too true portrayal of today's youth. Frighteningly real. Casper: Manages to be a family movie without getting too sweet. In fact it's a lot less saccharine than the cartoons it came from. Top 10 Worst Things in the Movies of 1995 The next Jurassic Park: Isn't it about time to stop' making a film out of everything that Michael you're sort of helpless, and no likes feeling helpless. Thereis one cool thing about being dumped, though. You get better it each time it happens to you. For example, you learn all the sneaky break-up lines. Anmve "dum pee" might understand thl implications of "I'm leaving you. or "It's over," or even, "Let'stry' being friends - you know, see other people." What small time film maker will Hollywood r1{anger JYems AIDS Quilt'Comes to Parkside • Genevieve Guran Photo Editor Four panels of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt were on display ·Dec. 4 and 5 at Parkside as part of the commemoration of World AIDS Day, celebrated nationally on Dec. 1. The Quilt began in a San Francisco neighborhood as a memorial to the more than 1,000 San Franciscans who died of AIDS between 1980 and 1987. Word of the Quilt quickly spread and thousands more panels were added. The Quilt now contains over 31,000 panels and would cover 13 football fields. All 50 states and 38 other countries have contributed panels. Panel materials are very diverse, including everything from jock straps, condoms. and feather boas to Barbie doll" stuffed animals, and wedding rings. Regardless of the materials or number of panels, the goals ofthe Quilt remain the same: to preserve the memory of those who have died as a result of AIDS, to increase awareness of AIDS and HIV prevention, and to increase support for those living with AIDS and HIV. Marcy Cayo, Program Manager of Parkside's Health and Counseling Services, was instrumental in bringing the panels to Parkside. Cayo said of the Quilt: "Some of the panels, you don't know what they mean. Some are very vague. Some are very clear. You think, 'Gosh, this is what he was about.'" In order to get the panels for this week's commemoration of World AIDS Day the panels had to be reserved a year in advance. The university had to pay a small fee ($250 - $300) and had to guarantee the security of the panels. Itis hoped that the Quilt will raise awareness of AIDS here at Parkside and in Southeastern Wisconsin. According to a survey published in the October 1995 Wisconsin AIDS / HIV Update, there were 227 cases of AIDS or HIV infection reported in Kenosha County and 237 cases reported in Racine County between 1982 and Sept. 30, 1995. Leadership 2000 • Melissa Noto Knowledge, skills, and increased opportunities are just the beginning of Leadership 2000: The Parkside Challenge. Students learn how to excel in a changing, diverse society by talking with community leaders and participating in various seminars and workshops over a ten week period. (February 6-April 9) Leadership 2000 is a program designed to equip first and second year Parkside students with an understanding of essential leadership skills for success in the 21st century. Parkside freshman and sophomores with good acaderpic standing are eligible. The program is free but registration is limited to 30 students and is processed on a first come basis. Keanu Less Than Memorable as Johnny • TY Wilda In the future, according to the cyberpunk author William Gibson, evil COrporations rule the earth with an eye only on the profit margin, the Yakuza roam the streets killing Without restriction, epidemics that make AIDS look harmless abound and hard wired heads are as common as color TVs. In the future according to Johnny Mnemonic, all of these elements are incapable of combining to create an interesting movie. The movie concerns an information courier known only as Johnny (Keanu Reeves). In his head is stored the cure for a neurological disease of the future that is dropping the citizenry like flies. The only problem is, he can't get it out and everyone wants it. Reeves wanders through this role listlessly, barking out monotone lines as he runs from everyone who wants his info. It's really a shame that he can't be killed without losing the data, because after about the first 20 minutes of the film you wish that someone would put him and us out of our misery. He faces off against an endless supply of Japanese killers whose characterizations are slightly less deep than the Japanese bad guys of a World War II propaganda film. Along the way he meets with friends IceT and Henry Rollins, rock and rap stars turned actors in charge of the stereotypical friendly underground/rebellion. Ice T plays the same function here as he did in Tank Girl, the mistrusting, tough talking rebel leader who will eventually save the day. Rollins comes in as the brilliant doctor who's going to save the world with Johnny's data. Somehow both of these characters have more substance to them than Reeves' title character, which sums up one of the real problems with the movie, everyone else is just bouncing around Johnny, waiting for him to get attacked by the enemy so they can save his life yet again, but all of them are able to care for him a lot more than he can make the audience care. Johnny Mnemonic is big on effects and flash. It features a dystopian futureworld that rivals the beauty and technology shown in Blade Runrter. There are cyberspace scenes using state of the art computer graphics that are visually stunning and captivating. It's lacking in emotional appeal. There is just nothing here to make you care what happens next. Gibson's original story that the film was based on was only a short story and the padding necessary to make it into a two hour movie shows. Long on action and effects and short on story and character, Johnny Mnemonic fails to pull the viewer in. • Sy Stevens A small group of the Parkside women's cross country team arrived back home this past monday from running the 1995 United States Cross Country Championships, which took place at Franklin Park in the city where Cheers was born. The race consisted of two races, the Senior Nationals which was a 6K (3.7 miles) open race, and the Junior Nationals which was 5K (3.1 miles) for women 19 years of age and under. The top six runners of the senior race hurdle themselves to the World Cup Championships which will be held in March of 1996. The winner of tire Senior Nationals, which was comprised of 238 runners, was Joan Nesbit from the Boston area with a course record time of 19:02. This time broke the preexisting record which belonged to Lynn Jennings by 30 seconds. The second place runner was Kate ~oJ!!,-eJ1. with a time of 19:32, and the third place runner was Lynn Jennings, and the seven time U.S. Nationals winner and the three times World Cup winner, with a time of 19:35. Running for Parkside in this race were J en Moss in the 184th position with a Hepp's Hype Picks Cincinnati over Chicago: Blake gets back on track with big-play bombs on the Bear's defense in a Cincy Shocker. They are in good shape coming out of last weekend's tournament with two champions. There were 16 schools represented and 224 wrestlers packed into Parkside's PhyEd building on Saturday. Roger Spear won the 118 lb division. He had four wins and no losses for the day. All of Rogers wins were by major decision or match termination, where he beat his opponent by 15 points or more. Jeremie Ott dominated his opponents winning the 177 lb weight class. He won his first match ofthe day with a pin and finished with one of the most exciting matches and a come from behind victory. At 158 pounds, Boone Smith took second at the tournament losing the championship round by a tie breaker. Senior, Myles Muckerheide placed third in the 167 lb weight class. Out of the 224 competitors, Myles was picked by coaches and referees for the Ray Larson Sportsmanship Award. Myles also beat Mike Schneider of Marquette who had pinned four opponents earlier that day. Myles Muckerheide Parkside had three ofthe top six in the 134 lb weight class. They included Freshman Brad Shefchik who took fourth, Trevor Hasenjager (last years NAJA National Champion at 118 lbs) and Shawn Maye, alsoa freshman, who tied with Trevor for fifth. Freshman Andy Tubbs placed fifth in the 190 lb weight class. Brett Stubblefield and Todd Raymond both took sixth in the 158 lb and heavyweight respectively. This week Parkside has three tough dual meets. The schedule this season will be tougher that previous years but Coach Koch is optimistic, "We have some outstanding freshman that have contributed to the team and we are relatively healthy." When this concept" is mentioned in church it usually refers to money, but it means much more than that. If you have many blessings, be them money, education, the love and enjoyment of a stable family life, or a stable and lucrative occupation, you also have a' commensurate responsibility that accompanies them. Society seems to be missing this point. Once upon a time, part of the so-called American Myth was the concept of responsibility for community good. This is where the Rush Limbaughs and the Newt Gingriches of the world err. Rush is eternally asking on his show, "Why should people who "have" pay for those who "have not?" The answer, my corpulent one, is that this nation does not (or at least, didn't used to) aspire to emulate the conditions that Charles Dickens found so repugnant 170 years ago. One hundred years ago, Social Darwinism defended the rampant and One Liberal's Opinion "Barb Churchill Ranger columnist CJ's column this week talks of people who have failed to use their immense wealth and talent to help those of us that are less fortunate, and exhorts those of us at Parkside to use our education wisely, and not just for our personal gain. As far as it goes, I am in complete agreement. But, his column does not go far enough. Social Darwinism has reared its ugly head again here in Wisconsin. No better explanation of this is required than the new "Wisconsin Works," or W-2 program that will be replacing Welfare as of Jan. 1, 1996. This program fails to take into account education OR people with serious illness, and puts everyone into the same category. This is just plain wrong. Now, if everyone in the world could work, they should. And, most do. Itis demeaning for an adult to take Welfare or SSI money when they could be working and earning their OWN way. And, yes, there are some deadbeats out there that could and SHOULD be working, but they don't. However, punishing everyone for the sins of a few is inexcusable. What good 01' lovable Tommy Thompson (the honorable one himself) has failed to take into account is that some people (temporarily or permanently) simply CANNOT work. Those people include cancer patients (pretty hard to work while taking chemo or radiation), the elderly (you mean that my eighty-seven year old grandma would HAVE to work if she didn't have her savings and her house?), the very young, and students. Yes, students! The current proposal for W-2 would force some of our lowincome Parkside students to work rather than go to school and improve themselves. They might be forced to take minimum or sub-minimum wage jobs (yes, W-2 provides for this too) rather than continuing in their efforts to build a better life. And, last of all, W-2 would hurt the very young by denying their mothers AFDC benefits. After two years on Welfare, AFDC benefits (even if there are young children in the house) will be cut off, regardless of how hard the people are trying or how severe the need. Whoever thought this program up needs his head examined. This program will cause more pain than any other in existence. Even rationed health care (coming soon, due to Medicare and Medicaid cutbacks) is. not as big a threat as this W-2. And it is built squarely on Social Darwinist principles-the survival of the fittest, and (more importantly) the survival of the RICHEST. Right now, the city of Racine is reeling. We have the highest crime rate in the state, a Senator that should and will be recalled (due to the fact that he does not feel the need to listen to his constituents), federal and state cutbacks, a new county sales tax that we don't want or need, and now this new W-2 program. The mind reels. The problem is that the state's priorities are seriously screwed up. Rather than helpmg the workmg poor with tax breaks, help with further education, and with new programs designed to help those most in need, they shaft us. Again and again and again. We almost need a miracle in order to get out from under. And that is not what America is all about. During this Christmas season, do your best to help those less fortunate, and pressure your legislators to help the lower and lowermiddle classes. It's time to "take back" our country from over-paid lobbyists and nonlistening representatives. If we raise our voices, we can not and WILL not be held down forever. He's ... the American President. Do they have a realistic chance at having a meaningful relationship with the leeches from the media following their every move during an election year? Director Rob Reiner suggests in his engaging movie The American President that they have a great chance. Andy loves Sydney. But the romance isn't that simple. As a widowed President (Michael Douglas), Andy Shepard's been able to avoid all character attacks from his rivals because it's not smart politics to go on the offensive against a widower. When the lonely widower begins to date a former political activist and present-day adversary of politicians (Annette Bening), President Shepard's chief rival Bob Rumson (Richard Dreyfuss) goes on the attack. The result is a media circus with Rumson as the ringmaster. The film is a resounding success, as a romantic comedy and as a look at American politics. You don't have to take a 400-level PoliSci class to understand the political complexities involved in the film, but it's not at the third-grade level either. Reiner reaches an intelligent, happy medium. Romantically, Reiner tries to make a Capra-esque love story. Sydney is completely intimidated by the White House scene at first. While Andy acknowledges that he "has the best home court advantage in the world," he refuses to take the relationship slowly. They dive in, and to Reiner's credit, end up as a fantastic couple. As the public begins to question the President's "family values" because of his affair, opinion polls show the President is in a free-fall, plummeting from a 63% approval rating to 41% in seventy days. But Andy understands that he's guilty only of falling in love. He refuses to fight the bully Rumson on the character issue in the press. He has no comment about Sydney to the bloodhounds who follow his every move. The main focus of The American President is the question "what real right does the public have in regards to the private life of a political figure?" This topic is entirely relevant in today's tele-crazed society (just ask Bill Clinton or onetime presidential contender Gary Hart). President Shepard reacts with a "no comment." He feels that any comment would lend credibility to his rivals' seedy claims and end up working against him. When his approval rating hits an embarrassing 41% though, he is forced into action. The result is retribution, politically and, after Sydney begins to feel the strain of the relationship, romantically. The American President also does an excellent job of showing us the merry-goround and fantasyland that is the Presidency. When Sydney spends the night at the White House, panic ensues among the President's staff and their intimacy is interrupted by the revolving door of nervous advisors. There are several sparkling performances in the film. While there is already Oscar-talk about Douglas's great performance as the title character, I believe Bening deserves. equal praise. Bening is completely giddy, yet strong. As a lobbyist she is intelligent. As a loveinterest she is striking. Bening is helped by the fact that the movie is as much hers as it is Douglas's; Reiner portrays not only the President's struggles with an unrelenting media, but he also shows Sydney's downsides, both privately and professionally. MichaelJ. Fox, who's been playing the same character for the last ten years, breaks out of his slump with a superb performance as President Shepard's antsy Domestic Policy Advisor. Martin Sheen also gives a winning portrayal as Shepard's Chief of Staff and best friend. But the performance that everyone will talk about is Douglas's. Douglas is splendid in the very difficult role. He comes across as a decent guy who just wants to return to the time when the President was given the benefit of the doubt in his private life. Unfortunately for him that time is long past. Douglas also does a good job of showing his funny side (before going to bed with Sydney for the first time, he reminds her that "the most powerful man in the world" is only a political term). The performance is wellrounded and worthy of all the acclaim it will receive. When was the last successful romantic comedy! intriguing political film? .. It's been a long, long time. Director Rob Reiner's The American President is quite an accomplishment, and quite a film. Christmas Music • Barb Churchill Ranger Curmudgeon Christmas music everywhere, and 'not a drop to drink.' Yes, folks, the overabundance of Christmas music is driving me nuts. As of this writing, there is still over twenty days to Christmas, and yet you'd think it was going to be tomorrow by all the Christmas music in the stores and on the radio stations. Even Muzak (elevator music) has gotten into the act, playing one Christmas song (like the ever-popular" Jingle Bells) over and over and OVER again until you're sick of it. Then they playa Muzak standard such as Barbra Streisand's "Wet." It's enough to make me hurl! At the malls, they have (unfortunately for us consumers) picked up on this Muzak trend, and feature thousands of different versions of "Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow," "Jingle Bells," the "Christmas Song" (otherwise known as "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire."), and of course "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." Better titles for the above records (after you've heard them one too many times) are "Let it Snow so you can get into a car accident and die," "Jingle Bell Hell," "Fire-roasting your chestnuts over Christmas Day while watching the Packers beat the Bears," and "Rudolph lords it over the other inferior reindeer." A few songs like "I am Santa Claus," by Black Sabbath are appropriate Christmas type tunes, but the others can "take a long walk off a short pier" as far as I'm concerned. So, what can you do about this Christmas song invasion! Refuse to hum, sing, or otherwise participate in Christmassong singing until the week of Christmas. One older song that I like singing to after listening to Christmas songs all day at work is "Man in the Wilderness" by Styx. And, of course, there is always my favorite song, "Dirt," that I can sing along with that immediately washes the bad taste out of my mouth. "Oh, you are so special. You have the talent, to make me feel like dirt. Oh, you use your talent, to fake me under, and cover me with dirt." This song always helps to remove Christmastype propaganda from my brain. So, do whatever you like to do to drive these mindless, boring, and pretentious Christmas songs from your life. It'll do you some good to remind yourself of the tedium, mediocrity, and futility of daily life after listening to sickly-sweet Christmas songs EVERYWHERE YOU GO. Big time soundtrack albums: It's apparently not enough for the movie business to get your ticket price, now they want you to buy the CD too. Junior: Did the world really need yet another pregnant man movie? Especially one featuring Schwarzenegger? Thomany damn kid movies: It wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the merchandising. Was there anything imaginable that you could buy this past summer without a picture of Pocahontas on it? Quentin Tarantino: I'm one of his biggest fans actually, but he is really beginning to be overused and overrated. The Net: The information superhighway is the newest bad movie device to come into vogue. I wish my E-Mail was as coolas the system in Disclosure or that it was easy to get rid of someone using it as it was to get rid of Sandra Bullock in The Net. Comedy sketches as movies: Stuart Saves His Family? The Jerky Boys? The fine work of Adam Sandler? C'mon people, is it really that hard to come up with an entertaining idea? • Threats of government intervention: Big government thinks that the movie industry is what is eroding today's society and destroying family values. So the movie makers promised they'd be good and work on the problem. Yeah right. As long as we keep shelling out the dollars for sex and violence, they'll keep giving that to us. At least Showgirls bombed. The best movie of 1995: Was there anything out there that didn't claim to be that? If not the best, than at least the most heart-warming, most thrilling or the most action packed. Spare us the hyperbole guys. So, that was 1995 in the theater. What can we expect in '96? December 9, 1995· page 8 December: Time to Celebrate • Melissa Noto Celebrate all the holidays of December in "Let Us Light Candles," an original multicultural musical event for the entire family. The concert will be Saturday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. in Parkside's Communication Arts Theatre. The performance was created by Patrick McGuire, a UW-Parkside professor. "The Parkside Chorale" and "The Voices of Parkside" will be featured under the direction of James Kinchen. Also featured SUFAC, cont from p, I the future. Music Department's request for an increase that would nearly double their budget was considered inappropriate at this time and it was voted to give them no increase at all. The largest increases were requested by BSU, Latinos Unidos and the AthleticlIntramurals Department. ·BSU and LU asked for money to pay their officers and to increase community and on-campus programming. These increases would have doubled the budgets for each ofthe organizations. While SUFAC felt the efforts of both groups were worthwhile, they also felt that this was not a good time to ask for such large increases. A compromise was made of giving a 25% increase to each group. The AthleticslIntramurals Dept. asked for an increase of $80,000. This increase would have meant a rise in tuition of $22 per full time student per semester. Linda Draft, chair of the department, explained the request as an increase of the costs of the department due to participating in the GLVC athletic conference and a need to purchase an additional van for team transportation. SUFAC members felt that the department should have to raise some ofthis money . on their own and not place the whole burden on the students. In a hotly debated vote of 6 for and 2 against, the committee authorized an increase of $20,000. The two members who voted against the measure felt that even this increase was too much. SUFAC will hear any appeals on its decisions on Dec 6th. Expected to appeal are the Athletics Department and the Union Rec Center. The final recommendations ofthe committee will be presented to PSGA for approval on Dec 8th. If they are approved there, they will go before the Chancellor for final approval. AI; a political science professor and Public Service Internship Program (PSIP) coordinator he has launched intern positions with local agencies, extend- ing from Chicago to Milwaukee. The program, which is not exclusive to political science majors, places Parkside stu- dents in positions such as with a Cook County judge or Channel 2 reporter in Chicago, the office of U.S. Congressman Mark Neumann, the Milwaukee offices of U.S. Senators Russell Feingold and Herb Kohl, or southeastern Wisconsin newspapers like Kenosha News, Racine Journal Times, or The Milwaukee Journal . Interns are also available through local district attorneys' offices and Kenosha and Racine police ·departments. Geared towards juniors and seniors, interested stu- dents should fill out an application in Molinaro 367 not less than six weeks before the beginning of the semester that the internship will occur. - At least a C+ average is needed and the applicant must not be on academic pro- bation. Placement is figured through an interview process at various agencies; some placements will require a course in political science. Though up to 12 credits can be earned, 3 to 6 credit hours is normal, depending on how many hours worked. Most of the intern positions are unpaid, and the paid ones are usually in the sum- mer months. The PSIP program has a two-fold purpose. Students are getting jobs as a result of the internship and are "edu- cating some of these agencies about students," said Pernacciaro. In some cases, interns have been awarded scholar- ships to law schools and grad schools from their internship site. "You're getting practical experience, picking up skills and getting recommenda- tions," said Pernacciaro. Ryczek indi- cated that he had been told by Shade that their schools were not "multi culturally diverse" and student teach- ers would no longer be placed there. "Our culture is diverse," Ryczek said, "we have kids that speak a number of dif- ferent languages in their homes." Despite the placement decision, Ryczek states that Shade "called and wanted to know why I hadn:t contacted, her." Otherwise, Ryczek said, "My dealings with them (Education Department) have been fantastic." Some current Education Department students have stated their dissatisfaction with Shade, but asked not to be interviewed. Many expressed fear that speaking against Shade would lead to retaliation and possible expulsion from the Teacher Education Program . A male student who pre- ferred not to be identified , described meeting with Shade in an impromptu meeting. "She threw a curve ball at me," he said. He states that he was informed his GPA was not adequate for the program and that complaints had been filed against him. The student then reported checking his record to find that it was clean and that his GPA was "in good shape," he said. The matter is cur- rently pending consideration with Vice Chancellor Ostheimer and the student is considering seeking legal counsel. "Dean Shade basically does whatever she wants to do...there is no collaboration there is no democracy and ' that's how I felt when I was there," Adelson said. Parking Policies 'Faculty, staff, and students are reminded, as the winter season approaches, that overnight parking on University property becomes a major concern ofthe university Police and Public Safety Department for the following reasons. Parking lots are closed for parking between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., all year long, for safety reasons. Anyone needing to park during those • hours must obtain permission from the University Police 'and Public Safety Department. Individuals failing to comply with this policy are subject to ticketing. With the approach of winter and the possibility of snow at any time, the overnight parking policy becomes even more critical to the safe and efficient operation of the campus. Vehicles parked overnight, without permission, are subject to ticketing, and in the event of a sufficient snow fall, are subject to towing. Vehicles parked overnight with permission will be contacted, and arrangements made to remove vehicles if possible. Parked vehicles, during snow emergencies, slow the progress of the Physical Plant employees who must plow the lots prior to the opening of school so that sufficient parking space is available. Plowing around parked vehicles takes additional time and normally takes additional parking spaces, which cannot be utilized by faculty, staff or students. " •Marianne Sjoholm Guest Writer University of Wisconsin-Parkside freshman Sylvia Canale was awarded a Mayor's Youth Commission Award. Sylvia was one of sixteen selected because of her outstanding personal achievements and positive contribution to the community. Canale almost didn't make it to her own award ceremony. She received the letter from the Mayor's office and didn't open it until about four days before the event. Canale said when she did open the letter she was "surprised, really surprised." So surprised she didn't believe it. She called the Kenosha Public Information office to verify her nomination. The office acknowledged her award and asked if she was going to accept the invitation. Canale gladly accepted. Mayor John Antaramian presented the certificate and medallion at a Common Council meeting on October 16. The Youth Commission and the Mayor developed the award program to recognize the accomplishments and activities of the youth in the Black Student Union A Professional Club • Reggie Slaughter Guest Writer The University of Wisconsin-Parkside's Black Student Union has been working to change their image from being a social club to being a professional club. BSU is made up of more than 50 members, which is a dramatic increase compared to past years. This year, BSU plans on being more involved in the University as well as in the community. "We would like to do more programming than already planned for this year," stated Curtis Bickham, president of BSU, "but unfortunately, because of our budget restrictions, we cannot do all ofthe things we would like." BSU is practicing a dressup day the last Wednesday of every month. The purpose is to practice good dressing etiquette for white collar jobs and interviews. Dress-up day will also cause BSU to stand out in the public eye. Another important aspect that BSU wants to work on is its overall membership GPA. The club has written a scholarship proposal which will be sent to many local companies for donations. The plan is to have the scholarship up and running for Spring semester 1996. The scholarship will be awarded to BSU members that achieve a semester GPA of 2.5 or better. This scholarship should not only help students financially, but also encourage them to work harder. The club guarantees changes for the university as well as the community. BSU wants to be perceived as a club that takes care of business. "Life is like a business," said Damian Evans, BSU member. "In order to be successful, one must plan carefully and make the right decisions. " BSU has four committees to maximize their productivity. The Programming committee plans and organizes events. The Advertising committee promotes events. The Community Outreach committee sets up activities that involve volunteer work for BSU. The Fundraising committee raises the money that allows for BSU to continue all of their planned activities. Together, these four committees make the club more effective than otherwise. You see, administration is proposing to move Student Health Services from Molinaro Hall to KR (KenoshalRacine MRI building). Counseling services and sexual assault programs would be forced to move, also. The move would require students and staff who are ill to walk across campus in the middle of winter for an aspirin or other non-prescriptive drug. Choosing to drive instead of walk is a problem also, as people don't want to lose parking places. Parkside has a large commuter population, so most can identify with this. Andrea Davis, chair of Disability Awareness Committee, is afraid the programs will flop if moved to KR. "To see all that is builtup, go down, is pretty sad," Davis said, referring to little usage of Student Health Services in the past. "We see it [the move] as a regression to what it used to be." "You see, you use. You don't see, you don't use," she attributes this idea to its current success in Molinaro Hall. Services for disabled students will also be forced to move across the street. Accessibility for persons in wheelchairs will be limited. "They're going to have to get a very large van to accommodate power chairs," said Davis. Disabled students requiring toilet assistance will just have to wait. "If you really wanted to use the bathroom, would you want to wait?" asks Davis. In the event of a medical emergency, particularly in . the dead of winter, response time will be significantly longer as the nurse must start the car and cross Wood Road to get to the center of campus. Dr. Grace's response is that the administration is not legally bound to provide that type of assistance. However a special asset of Parkside i~ that everything is under one roof. Why move these offices into inaccessibility? Vending machines with band-aids and aspirins could be made available to students, but would of course require spare change. Davis asks,"Why haven't students been approached?" She encourages students to write letters to Grace, letting him know you want to work with him on an alternate solution. "He cau't respond to students if they don't speak up," concludes Davis. Some solutions are having students pay an extra $5.00 each semester on their tuition, or moving Admissions, which caters to off-campus visitors, to KR. "Please, we want to do something. PSGA InTouch with U.S. Congressman Neumann • Kristine Hansen Staff Writer Two staff representatives from U.S. Congressman Mark Neumann's office spoke at last Friday's PSGA meeting. Tom Richie, PSGA president, invited Robin Vos and Mark Retledge "for informative reasons." "There are a lot of misconceptions about what is happening to student financial aid. This gave students the opportunity to ask questions, directly to the people who are responsible, and also an opportunity to clear up any misconceptions," said Richie. Mark Retledge opened up his talk commenting on PSGA's STOP sign in their office window, asking students to stop in and call their representatives about Congress' measures to cut student financial aid. · The 6 month grace period on student loans will not change; college graduates will have to pay the interest that accumulates during this period. This will cost an average of $9 per month and saves $3.5 billion. There will be a 50% increase in amounts available for student loans. 1995 yields $24 billion while 2002 predicts $36 billion. This is even taking into consideration the annual 5-6% college inflation on average. No dollar-wise cuts will occur in most of the financial aid programs, except for an increased $4 per month for the life of a Stafford loan. Any misconceptions on financial aid "cuts" come from failed measures to raise tuition. Retledge gave the example of Washington wanting to raise tuition, but then a university makes it less. "That's where the cut is," Retledge explains. One PSGA member commented on the behalf of all students that "We're trying to better ourselves, yet we're putting ourselves deeper in debt." The representatives' response is that students are being loaned money generously for 4 years and are given an additional 6 months before starting loan payments. Other business included plans for a United Council meeting at UW-Stout on November 11 and 12 in which five Parkside students will be attending. The main topic of discussion and debate will be a change in student segregated fees; currently 75 cents per student. The proposal is for 90 cents per student. Resolution 95-23, a proposal stating that PSGA nominations have to accept or decline before an election can take place, was read and accepted. A nominee must be either at the meeting or give a written and signed acceptance letter to a member of the Executive Branch. At Friday's meeting, 3 new senators were sworn in: Karen Diehl, Chastity Washington, and Steve Zieman, adding more power to student government at Parkside. were blown away, we all realized, if you think about it, 99.5% of all men have committed sexual assault in some way," stated Mateo Mackbee. The group is currently in the process of creating a curriculum for the college and high school levels and in the future they wish to move it into the elementary level. The men will learn about violence and women, violence on television and violence in video games. One group of men saw a speaker and saw that something need to be done. M.A.V.E.R.A.K.S., Men Against Violence Educating Racine and Kenosha Students formed by the men of the Peer Health Educators. The group formally started after a Residence Hall Association meeting. The Peer Health Educators meeting speaker was Edward Antaramian, Assistant City Attorney. The topic of discussion was sexual assault and rape. "We all IVCF Conference Held • Kristine Hansen Staff Writer Wisconsin Inter Varsity Fall Conference was held October 27-29, at Camp Wonderland. Four students from UW-Parkside's InterYarsity Christian Fellowship Chapter convened with InterVarsity members from other colleges and universities to address critical issues ofthe Christian life. Titled, "Cross Training", each conference participant chose from 7 tracks to follow. Inter Varsity staff, staff volunteers and resource people led the tracks with titles like "Choices: Tried, Tested, and True", "The Joy of Following Jesus", "The Joy of Bible Discovery", "The Joy of Growing Together", "Leadership Congress", "Twentysomething" and "Creative Evangelism." Ryan Silich, a Parkside sophomore, chose "The Joy of Following Jesus" track, designed to teach what it means for Christ to be first in your life, how to develop disciplines that nurture this relationship with Christ, and how to begin reaching out to others. After studying Luke 5 and the type of disciples God chose, Silich stated,"We're not God [and] we can't see whose hearts will be changed and those who will not." Silich noted that God chose disciples from several myriads. "The Joy of Growing Together" track studied 2 Timothy and how to assist peers in a growing and fruitful relationship with Christ. "I learned the only things eternal are the word of God and [His] people," Joe Herron, a Parkside student said. At Parkside, Herron is responsible for leading the InterVarsity's "large group" worship every Wednesday. "God has a plan for everyone's life," said Holly Roberson, Parkside's InterYarsity's Women's Discipleship leader .. Roberson's track focused on Abraham's faith and trust in God and studied the book of Genesis. Currently Roberson is heading Becoming a Woman of Excellence, a women's Bible study on campus. The "Leadership Congress' track took two representatives from each campusIthe chapter president and/or another delegate) to discuss and collaborate on Christian leadership in each InterVarsity chapter. Ann Larabee represented Parkside and showing gutsy leadership said,"If we're not praying, and asking God to work, [then] nothing will happen." This year Larabee has two leadership positions in Parkside's InterVarsity: Treasurer and Party Coordinator. InterVarsity meets Wednesdays at noon in Molinaro 107. So why go see Mal/rats? A Kevin Smith Double Feature Film & Video Review Mal/rats/Clerks Bob and Jay (we'll get back to them later). Mal/rats begins with a double dumping. First, T.S.'s girlfriend dumps him for being just like her dad, except that he has no ambition. Then Brody gets dumped crudely for being a comic book-crazed, Segaplaying geek with no ambition (He is, of course, playing Sega while she dumps him). Solution to their problem?- hit the mall. What ensues is, of course; silly and pointless, but if you're in the theater, you • Ty Wilda & Angela Woosley So what is Mal/rats? Another angst-ridden story of Generation X-type things that dwells on how aimless and hopeless today's youth are? A goofy, comedy-type thing filled with zany teenage antics? A beautiful story of teen romance where the good guy gets the girl after realizing what a jerk he is? Basically, it's a little of all of the above, which is a lot more fun than it sounds. Besides that, it has Silent Because it's fun. It has slackers acting stupid and having pointless and silly conversations about Superman's sex life. But most importantly it has Silent Bob and Jay, who absolutely steal the movie. Their half-assed plots to ruin the game show and help their friends involve several crashes through dressing rooms and about a half-- ounce of pot. Not to mention Silent Bob's constant attempts to master Jedi mind powers throughout the movie. (He just saw Return of the Jedi last week, you see, and ....) Kevin Smith has fun with Generation X stereotypes in this movie which recreates all the fun of the Brat Pack movies of the '80's without the angst. Mal/rats gives him a chance to do every. thing in a movie he has always wanted to in the sPan of an hour and a half or so including a cameo by comi; book writer Stan Lee, don. ning Bat gear and swinging through a mall, displayinga three-nippled woman and showing up mall security as the rent-a-cop wannabes they are. Clerks, now available on video, was Kevin's debut as a filmmaker. Shot in black and white film on a minimal number of locations (mostly the interior of a convenience store), it is an example of how much can be done on a shoestring budget. Like cont. page 8... He Said, She Said... The Hair and Now •Michael T. Zurad Humble Servant This is going to sound like a double standard, but the one feature that all men secretly pray that women overlook when they look at guys is one ofthe things that first catches a man's eye on a woman. That feature is hair. It sounds so shallow. In all honesty we'd rather spend time with someone we get along with than some cranky bitch with awesome hair. But the way human nature is set up, people generally look at other people's heads first. Hair usually occupies more than 50% of a woman's head, so it is kind of tough to not notice her hair. Unless she's got a great butt. That will easily eclipse hair, But I digress. Women almost always have better hair than men. This is due to several reasons. First, women almost always have more hair than men. This is an unfair advantage. Most men can't grow their hair long unless they pursue unrewarding careers involving manual labor, engineering, or the custodial arts. And who is to say that those who do can even grow hair? Women spend a disproportionate amount of time taking care of their hair. Women actually think about their hair-much more than men. Women will spend hours pondering about what they're going to do with their hair: what color hair, what color thingie to put in the hair, do the shoes match the color of the thingie in the hair, what about these hats, is the hair too long, is the hair too short, is it too frizzy, is the hair damaged? Men generally ask two flavors of questions, if they ever ask at all, and those are: "Should I wash my hair before I pick her up?" and "How come the only hair that isn't falling out are the gray ones?" The average woman spends approximately seven times the gross national product' of Costa Rica on hair care products every month. These include various derivatives of mousse and hair spray that, for the most part, cancel each other out. They have to use some acid-based shampoo to disintegrate that crap from their hair. Then they have to use some kind of delicate shampoo because they wash their hair too much. The average guy washes his hair with a bar of Lava. Ifhe feels like splurging, he'll pick up a bottle of Pert. Women, after spending enough time in front of the mirror to plant, raise, and harvest a modestly sized apple orchard, check themselves in the mirror, on average, 387 times more frequently than men. Unless he is Italian. Then the ratio is about one to one. There's some kind of Italian frequent comber miles program they've got going. So hair is yet another battle that men are winning because we spend less time, we spend less money, and we don't have to look at ourselves all day. We get to look at women with great heads of hair. Assuming it's her head we're looking at. • Karen M. Diehl Managing Editor Hair. Biologically, it's just a few thousand strands of waste proteins excreted from follicles in your skin. It serves the very utilitarian purpose of keeping our ears warm in the wintertime, and it's even useful for flossing when you're standing at a Kansas concert with corn stuck between your teeth. Hair can be a religious . symbol, a political statement, and most importantly a sign of individual style and fashion. There can be little argument that when it comes to first impressions, hair will almost always factor into the equation. I don't know of a single woman who doesn't look at a prospective date and think, "Ooh! Cool highlights ..." or, "Neat eyes, but lose the sideburns ..." or, "Eew. Balding is okay, but that 'hair flap' combed over the top has GOT to go." Personally, I find that a person's hair speaks to me on more than an aesthetic level. I find that I'm often not attracted by the hair itself, but rather by the attitude it projects. Hair, believe it or not, is also an effective media for communication. Women - and some men, I suppose - speak very adequately through their hair styles. Depending on mood and personality, these people can create a style that yells, "You DON'T want to mess with me ...J" or says, "Hi. I'm feeling very blah today." Other "hair-conscious" people can pick up on these vibes and respond accordingly. The frustration in being a woman, of course, occurs when you run across a "hair oblivious" guy. Guys have a more extended opportunity to be "hair oblivious" because they can generally keep theirs short and simple without worry of the style it projects. Most guys have short, simple haircuts. Women, on the other hand, are - and historically always have been - nearly obligated to do something special or unusual with her locks. If she doesn't, she must not be very concerned about how she appears. Ifshe does too much, then she must be vain. It's somewhere in the hearts of most women to have that special guy acknowledge her fmesse at striking a balance between frivolous and frumpy. Hence, when encountering a "hair oblivious" guy, man) women may feel like they're running into a brick wall. Finally, it is important to note that whatever your style - dark, stubbly, thin, coarse, braided, curly, shiny, or even bald as a cueball - don't be too judgmental of someone else's "do". Hair is a very personal representation of our values, our cultures and our beliefs. And besides, who hasn't had a bad hair day .... Parkside's new mission statement· and a group of Parkside ,tud:nts have been taking that mission very seriously, Several freshmen from Roseann Mason's Cross Cultural Reading and Writing class donated their time and energy on Saturday, October 21, doing just that. Their efforts turned a popular catch-phrase, "Think Globally, Act Locally,"into action, during the 5th Annual Work-a- Thon. The goal of the project was to help build a stronger local community, as well as offer support on a global capacity. The Work-a- Than was sponsored by C.A.S.C. (the Central American Solidarity Coalition), an organization designed to make a difference for families in Racine. EI Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Chiapas, Mexico. On the global level, the support donated by Parkside students as well as volunteers !'romPark High School went to elevate some of the need in several areas. Although the students did not meet their goal of 100 or more pledges, the money they did raise helped support a truck bound for Mexico carrying writing materials, medicine. hooks, etc. Locally, their work affected Habitat for Humanity, Youth Cultural reading and writing class Fair Chance, the George Bray Neighborhood Center, and Homeward Bound. They spent the day working on many projects throughout downtown Racine, including cleaning up a local homeless shelter and clearing out the old Zahn's building downtown, the future site of the Children's Imaginarium. I met with a dozen or so of the participants and informally chatted about their volunteer experience. This week's uolunteer in Mark Ulmen: Mark Ulman is a senior majoring in English with a concentration in writing. He learned about the program through a friend who had volunteered. Mark's interest has been . in special events that allows him to share his weekend hours with community needs. This fall, he has volunteered at the 1888 School House Open House for the Racine County Historical Museum, the Music Festival for SEWAP, Octoberfit and Halloween Havoc for Kenosha Youth Foundation, and the Chili Cookoff for Kenosha Kinship. "Volunteering has given me a chance to interact with others," said Mark. "I always feel good afterwards, knowing I helped someone." While volunteering at the music festival in Racine, a person attending the festival suggested Mark apply for a job with the training process. Jim Hendrickson Aiken Honored By NCAA Softball coach 'fury Acheson announced this week that UWP's own Jakie Aiken, a 1993 graduate of Germantown High School, has been honored for her outstanding achievement in 1995 by the NCAA and National Softball Coaches association. Aiken was honored by the NCAA for leading in both home runs and runs batted in for the 1995 season in Division II competition. She Was also honored by the National Coaches Association as an Academic AlIAmerican after amassing a grade point average of 3.58 on a 4-.0 scale. These awards came on the heels of being named a first team All-American at the National Championships in May. The Rangers finished fourth in the nation in 1995 after compiling a 45-13 record. The team was recently honored by the NSCA as an Academic Top Ten Team, placing fifth in the nation with a team GPA of 3.14. The win for the Rangers clinches a berth in this week's GLVC Tournament. Parkside (15-14 overall, 12-8 in GLVC) was led on the attack by Tammi Rickert (15 kills) and Karrie Przyblla (14 kills). Rickert and Przyblla also topped the defensive effort, with 12 and 10 digs respectively. Coach Len Johns team made good on their pre-season goal of making it to the GLVC Tournament during their first year of GLVC play. Schumaker's credits include a book on Eric Clapton, an Allen Ginsberg biography, a Phil Oaks book, a Writers Digest column, book reviews for Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and over 300 magazine pieces. He was offered the opportunity the write a book on Jeffrey Dahmer's father, and turned it down. He stressed that, as a writer, you must decide what you do and do not want to do. In the 1960's as a UW-Parkside student, Schumaker worked on The Yellow Newspaper, an under- ground paper, rebelling against the standard student-run newspaper. "If you want to write, you have to read as if your life depended on it," said Schumaker. He always writes in restaurants, taking only Christmas Day off, and reads whatever he can get his hands on. Those who claim to know the definitive Biblical answer to the question of homosexuality "have never bothered to read the Bible," he said. "There is not as much clarity as one might suppose." Because the Bible is such a large text, the professor narrowed his dis- cussion down to an examination of the five books of Moses that, accord- ing to Biblical history, were written by Moses in direct accordance with God, on Mount Sinai . Books such as Job, Psalms or the letters of Timothy are "just commentary," on the main five books of the Old Testament, Snyder asserted. In accordance with his own personal religious belief, Professor Snyder took the Jewish position, which he said, as with any controversial issue such as homosex- uality or abortion for instance, there is no "one position." "What it really comes down to," says Aaron Snyder, is "context ... not soundbites." When reading the Bible to find answers to the question of homosexuality, we need to look one or two lines before or after the important passages. In Leviticus 18:22, an English translation of the Bible pronounces, "A Man shall not lie down with mankind as with wom- ankind; it is an abomination." (Lesbianism is never mentioned in the text.) To read the books of Moses in the original Hebrew, the word meaning "lie down with," is [sh'khav] which can literally mean anything from, "reside in," "settle down with," or "have sex with." For a man to [Sh'khav] another man is an "abomi- riation," a word [teo-ay-vah] which has sixteen different meanings in the Torah (the five books of Moses.) The English translation of [teo-ay-vah) can range from meaning "unclean," "ritualistically forbidden," "lewd" or "cause for execution." Snyder said, "we are kidding ourselves if we think we know what [toe-ay-vah] means," it has so many different meanings. While it is clear that something regarding [sh'khav] was prohibited, it is not clear exactly what was pro- hibited. Of the approximately thirty-five people in attendance on Thursday, during the free lecture--one in a series of lectures offered by the Philosophy department--only a small number of attendees left before the conclusion of the discussion, although they may have left for rea- sons other than the controversial theme of the lecture. Overall, it was a harmless, well- prepared, lesson in linguistics and humility, about which Professor Snyder issued a warning. "Use humility" when attempting to illus- trate what the Bible really means and really says; "you don't know what it says or what it means." Last year, the VicePresident of the United States was at the conference. This year, unfortunately, he was not. In a Community workshop, Tina Anchondo, a Parkside student, listened to Cruz-Perez discuss voter's rights, as a lot of Latinos are concerned and don't know what their rights are. "She gave me some ideas on how I can get my mom to vote," said Anchondo. Anchondo has been trying to convince her mother to register for some time now. Flores was impressed with Gutierrez and said,"We're try109 to get him on campus. He's an excellent speaker!" Gutierrez is a member of Congress in the House of Representatives. College fairs and federal agencies for employment were on hand to speak with highschool students, college students, and community members. All three went deaf just for fun. Pete Townshend of The Who, famous for loudly smashing his guitars to bits for concert finales, gave Hearing Education and Awareness for Rockers (H.E.AR.) a $10,000 donation after announcing his hearing damage due to loud music. Townshend said, "The real reason that I haven't performed live for a long time is that Ihave very severe hearing damage. It's manifested itself as tinnitus, ringing in the ears at the frequencies that I play the guitar. It's very, very difficult for me to work at music. '! Eric Clapton says that one of his ears is at least half deaf. "When I'm onstage, I have to stand a certain way to be able to hear everything. Otherwise, Ican only hear half of what's going on." And Ted Nugent admits, "My left ear is there just to balance my face, because it doesn't work at all." H.E.AR. is a non-profit organization with international affiliates. Kathy Peck, a singer and bass player who suffered a forty percent hearing loss in one ear, founded H.E.A.R. with Dr. Flash Gordon in 1988 after both attended an excessively loud concert at a local club. Parkside wanted to be "vISIble" during homecoming week. October 11 was National Coming Out Day, celebrated worldwide, in which the gay, lesbian, and bisexual community urges those in the "closet" to declare who they are. . Hot pink flyers and stickers with an upside-down hot pink triangle on a black background were distributed on campus by GLO members. The Women's Center passed out the flyers in conjunction with their bake sale on October 11, sbowing support. The flyers explained National Coming Out Day as "a support system for those who feel, for whatever reason, that it is unsafe to leave their 'closet. m If one supported the hidden gay and lesbian community s/he was asked to wear the inverted triangle sticker proudly. In the past, area high schoolers have flocked to the dance, as there are few places they can openly express their sexuality. Parkside's own Kimberly Blanchette will star in "Outloud," a comedy and poetry reading, on October 25 in Union Cinema. Blanchette, a GLO member, is both a professional comedian and nationally published poet. Blanchette was elected third runner-up in Parkside's Homecoming King contest. This week's volunteer is David Fleury. David Fleury is a senior majoring in geography who plans to become an elementary school teacher upon graduation in December 1996. David has been an active volunteer since January 1993. The contract stated that, "upon vacating the premises, the structure either be terminated or donated to Parkside," said Assistant Chancellor, G. Gary Grace. The structure. built in 1989. is designed as a medical facility and is located on the east end of the Parkside campus behind Tallent Hall. Mter the building was vacated this past spring. Parkside officials hosted an open house for organizations and departments on campus to present proposals for the use of the vacated building. As previously stated, any guy, no matter how inexperie~ced,. should realize when someone IS "hitting on him." Thank those clever Voyager producers for realizing that Kim reacted "out of character" for a young man, and for giving him a reason to ignore the lovely "pleasure seeker" woman last season. Paris and Chakotay's characters have been explored in several episodes already. It's refreshing that ,",yager is letting Paris' "bad side" (namely, his womanizing) be "a cross that he has to bear," rather than just your "run of the mill expected behavior" for a Starfleet , , officer. Score one for the women s movement! It also is encouraging that they are trying to show Chakotay in a less restrained light. Last season, Chakotay was almost the caricature of a stoic, unemotional Indian. So, it's good that the producers have recognized that his character needs some "bad points" to balance out his pluses. Providing that Voyager doesn't only have sixteen episodes again in the second season, I'd say that it has done just about everything right. Now, if they'd only make Janeway stop screaming, the show would be perfect. oBarb Churchill Staff Writer The second season on Star Trek: ,",yager has been in full swing for about two months now, so I thought that I'd take another look at how it's doing. Were any of the things I talked about previously fixed, and IS the show getting any better? In a word, YES! Voyager is getting better thanks to more character developme~t of Tom Paris, Harry Kim, and Chakotay. These characters were largely ignored last se~son,but t~ey have "gotten their due during this season, and there are still m~nyshows left. This is indeed encouragmg (as Tuvok might say.) The further "fleshing out" of Harry Kim's character has been particularly welcome. Last season, it was established in the season opener "Caretaker" that Kim was an accomplished clarinetist that had studied at the renowned Juilliard school. So, as a clarinetist myself, it really rankled me that he never was shown playing his clarinet! So what if he'd left his clarinet behind-Replicate a new one!Any musician would do this, if music was truly that important to him. And if this guy really went to Juilliard, music would be that important, so he should h" shown playing his clarinetFrequently. This season, he finally has replicated himself a clarinet (thank God for that twenty-fourth century technology!) and he's been shown playing in his quarCD Review ~ P t rea ar y oTy Wilda Entertainment Editor If Led Zeppelin had been born in the gothic rock heyday of the eighties and, if Robert Plant hadn't been kicked so hard in the groin before becoming a vocalist, the result would sound something like Tea Party. Celtic spiritualism, Indian instrumentation, alternative style morbidity, and philosophical lyrics mix to give Edges of Twilight its signature sound. The string work of Stuart Chatwood and Jeff Martin is tight and professional on the standard and bass and guitar parts and even better on mandolin, harpguitar, tabla, djembe and harmonium. Jeff Burrows keeps the discord of these instruments together with an understated percussion serving in the background as glue holding things in place. And over it all there is the voice of Martin, a mid-range vocal that never quite hits the sub-sonic lows of most goth singers but also .never veers into the heavy metal shriek it seems to threaten to. Highlights of the CD are the opening power chords of "Fire in the Head," a standard invitation to come into the darkness to play, and the super-long (6+ minutes) "Sister Awake," a showoff piece in which Tea Party shows just how-many instruments they can use and styles they can touch in one song. Lyrically, the band draws heavily on spiritualism and Celtic poetry ("Does the sun renounce it's kingdom! as the shadows fall," from "Turn the Light down Low" is a fairly typical line) that sometimes has you wondering whether they just finished a class in the works ofYeats. Petak's (RRacine)sudden flip-flopon the stadium vote? None? You folks must have been reading my column from day one! Nice going! In case any of you missed it, Petak decidedto change his vote on the stadium issue from NO (whichhe'd voted twice)to YES, givingthe OKto a special "stadium taxing district," which includes Racine County. Racine County is one of the few counties in-Wisconsin that DOESNOTcurrently levy a sales tax. The state senate's action basically says, "We don't care that you don"t levy a sales tax. Start doingit for thisNOW." But as previously stated in this column, the constitutionality of this raises grave doubts. Number one, CAN the state arbitrarily force a county to levy a tax that it doesn't want? Racine County residents are adamant in their refusal to field another tax. This was reflected in the recent vote by the RacineCounty Supervisory Board, when they voted 28-0 against implementing a sales tax, even if the state insisted. Number two, the issue of the special "stadium district" is a problem.When only part ofthe state has to pay for something, should the state REALLYbe involved?And if the state demands that it IS involved, perhaps the whole state, rather than just part, should have to pay for the stadium. Otherwise, it probablyisn't legal. John is wearing a black and silver sweat suit that has seen better days. It has some holes in it and is frayed, but it is very comfortable. When he works, John wears a suit and tie which befits his position as a human resources manager at Snap-On. John is not a small man-he stands about 6' 5" and 240 pounds. Walking down Third Avenue, he notices that behind him is a police cruiser. The officer appears to be watching John closely.John is looking at one of the opulent houses. John has noticed some windows need repair. The peace officer has noticed that John is looking at the house. He pulls up and says, "Youwouldn't be thinking of visiting that house later tonight, would you?" "No, of course not," John responds. "I just noticed that a window frame needs to be repaired." "Right," states the officer. "Youlook a little out of place for this neighborhood. Why don't you leave now while there is no trouble?" John says nothing and continues to his car. This is not the first time John has encountered this scenario. A couple months ago, he was looking for a house in the White Caps development He was driving his self-restored '67 Camaro. He was stopped because his car looked "out of place" and told to leave. John found'out that the police officers have the right tax. People would have to he hired, just to "commence tax- . ing." Forms would have to be filledout delineating what's being sold, so the tax can be properly implemented.This tax will be a logistical nightmare for Racine County. By forcing Racine County to levy this tax, the state really did "stick it to" us. County residents can hope that the Racine County Supervisors will back up their threat to file a lawsuit against the state. The Supervisors must "put their money where their mouths are." Then perhaps Racine Countywill stop being the doormat for Wisconsin's Senators. AB for Senator Petak, perhaps the hest thing that he can do for himself is to resign. As Racine County Board Supervisor Dan Sharkozyput it, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." to stop him because of the "Terry" rule. This rule allows a officer to stop someone as long as he can "articulate a suspicion" when questioned. John's friends in the police tell him that racist attitudes are prevalent on the force, but nothing is ever done about it. Our walk with John is over. What race is John? Should he have been "Terry stopped?" If John is an African-American male, can you understand why AfricanAmericans may have a different view of the police than whites? Is this really the kind of country you want? Making sense out of it all: The Great Racial Divide • George Harris Jr. Columnist After fifteen months, the "Trial of the Century" has finally ended. The long awaited verdict was reached in less than five hours. When the not guilty verdict was read, there was celebration and gnashing of teeth. There is still debate over whether the race card was played during the trial. I think the "Dream Team" simply took advantage of prosecution mistakes. The prosecution hung their hat on Det. Mark Fuhrman and his testimony. Remember the "Dream Team" didn't invent the sloppy LAPD, the inept criminologists or the racist cops. Some of the same people who told us that we should accept the verdict of the Rodney King cops tell us we shouldn't accept this one. They go so far as to suggest that black jurors couldn't or wouldn't convict black defendants. If that is the case, they learned from the white jurors in Simi Valley. After all, they couldn't convict the white cops who beat up Rodney King. Some have even questioned the intelligence of black people as jurors. This offends me because they are painting all blacks with the same brush. People also forget that the other three nonblack jurors came up with the same verdict. The polarization of the country has been orchestrated by the media covering this case. They showed us the contrast between the cheering African-Americans and the somber disgusted whites. They rarely showed whites who agreed, or blacks who disagreed with the verdict. In the end, we must live with the verdict. It was rendered fairly. We have to believe the jurors when they said race wasn't a factor. I think that the aftermath of the trial is a mirror shown to the face of America. We looked in that mirror and saw the monster of racism either staring us in the face or lurking over our shoulders. AfricanAmericans are simply reminded that we s.tilllive in a racist society. A Letter to CJ C.J. Nelson, I find your article offensive. Did you stop and consider for a moment that maybe O.J. didn't do it? Or do you see "black" and assume "killer?" It is absurd to assume that Judge Ito, Johnnie Cochran and the jury are as racist as the ALL white jury, judge and lawyers that freed the killer of Emmit Till. Youlook at O.J. and assume that he did it. That is the same reason our police departments, judicial system and entire society has been corrupt throughout history. Did you stop and think that the officers who investigated the O.J. case think just like you, assuming that he's guilty, and perhaps even "fixing" the evidence? Did you stop and think ahout how many black people don't have the money to fight this putrescent system and are in jail? Did you stop and think that maybe you're wrong? All types of minorities have been going to jail for years, not because they're guilty, but because racists never stop to think! This article fueled ignorance. Every time that I turned around I heard white people saying, "They're just going to let him walk? Where's our riot?" The point remains that we were not on the jury, and we didn't hear all the relevant evidence. You assumed he was guilty the night he went to jail. Now you feel shocked and cheated that O.J. has heen acquitted .... How can that be? Did you ever stop and think that maybe an innocent man has been in jail for more than a year? Innocent blacks have been going to jail for 462 years, long before America became a nation. It is more convenient for you to ASSUME. "This is the best showing for our team this year," said Head Coach Lucian Rosa. The upper classmen also showed their might, allowing only one freshman into the top seven. "I'm glad our upper classmen showed up to run," said Rosa. "I'm very happy with Andy Sarnow. He is close to where he is capable of running." Sarnow ran the fastest Parkside time of the year (26:48) and finished 13th in the race. Senior Jesse Decker returned to form with his best time of the year (27:13) and Dave Sheriff continued his solid season 127:23). Freshman Steve MiIler has been the most consistent freshman and is steadily improving. Thel:52 half-miler from California was fourth for the Rangers. Janette Deni! is trying to give Parkside something it doesn't have: a yearbook. In the 1985-1986 school year two students attempted to start a yearbook staff. However, their proposed budget request was denied by SOC due to a lack offunds. "My job is to see if I can get more people to help out," Deni! explained, adding, "I know it's going to be difficult." Deni! is a transfer student from Lakeland College in Sheboygan, where she was a member of their yearbook staff. Encouraging student input, Deni! has, "open ideas right now" about the yearbook format. She is considering starting with student organizations and campus events and feels that "candids would be a great thing." The trip to New York City is the lab portion of the class from March 9 to March 16, during UW- Parkside' spring break. Out of the four plays that will be seen, two have already been chosen. Each year the class sees a comedy, musical, drama, and avant-garde (experimental). This year's musical is A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum star- ring Nathan Lane. The score includes "Everybody Oughta Have a Maid" and "Comedy Tonight:" Playright Larry Gelbart also wrote the original M*A*S*H comedy. The Career Planing Group meets for five weeks start- ing Wednesday, October 25 at noon in Cart 120. The Career Planing Groups are designed to be a starting point to identify and begin to develop possi- ble career options. Students who participate in the session will be working with a workbook. Discussion will cover pos- sible career interests and the importance of skill development. There are three options for this class: the 1 credit lecture class and 1 credit lab class for a 2 credit total, the 1 credit lab class only, or the lab and/or class for audit. Taking the New York Professional Theater Seminar for credit can help a G.P.A. You may think of the stereotypical "welfare queen." Welfare advocates claim state Republicans are manipulating such stereo- types in the quest to cut government bud- get deficits and reduce the public debt. . UW system faculty and students are involved in educational projects aimed at combatting stereotypes and rhetoric dam- aging to the poor. Professor Anne Statham of the Sociology department is the Outreach Administrator of the statewide Women and Poverty Education Initiative (WPPEI). She is involved in conferences focused on the issues and writes grant proposals for WPPEI projects. In June, Statham obtained for WPPEI a $10,000 grant to produce a video called In Our Own Image. It will reveal the realities of women living in poverty. Portraying working and non-working poor women, it will help to dispel some of the myths of welfare. The premiere screening of the video is planned for late December. (See related article.) The video will give a voice to the poor, usually excluded in the media. ''We need to be sure affected women's voices are heard," Statham believes. Poverty is reflected in the class divisions of our society. This often creates "a lot of hurt feelings and misun- derstandings between poor and middle-to- upper class women." "Public opinion is not reflected in welfare reform proposals," says Statham. Surveys show that most people think welfare reform should include work training and education. They also want AFDC to remain at current rates. However, explains Statham, this is not what is being proposed in one of Governor Thompson's nationally recognized propos- by Derek Bishop A great "no impact" way to exercise. Since W-2 is entirely work based, it elimi- nates all cash assistance entitlements (AFDC checks without work obligations). Critics of the proposal say it provides insuf- ficient health and child care assistance. It includes no support for education. It pro- vides little support for the physically and mentally disabled. These insufficiencies are evident in the "Transitions" and "Community Service Jobs" levels of'the W-2 program. The "Transitions" level provides jobs "for those who are unable to perform independent self-sustaining work even in a community 7service job (CSJ)." While this level has well-intended goals, jobs will pay only 70% of minimum wage to recipients. CSJs, "for those who need to practice the work habits and skills necessary to be hired by a private business," similarly will pay 75% of minimum wage. Participants are limited to 24 months of work in each the Transitions and the CSJ level. Participants in both levels receive food stamps, but no federal or state Earned Income Tax Credit. On October 2, a press conference was held in Madison. Its purpose was to remind voters and politicians of the adverse effects that welfare reform will have on children living in poverty. State Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-78th Assembly District) spoke in favor of the positions of welfare advo- cates. Professor Mary Kay Schleiter of the Sociology department and UW P student Lisa Hanson, a senior Sociology major/Spanish minor, are organizing speak- ers bureaus on women in poverty issues. Students participated in a "Take a Shot" contest to win cash prizes as wellas mugs and key chains with the alcoholawareness slogan on them". StUdents had to shoot baskets wear- inga pair of glasses that were altered to simulate the vision of an intoxicat- ed person. . I've been known to act pretty' stupid a~ parties The Women's Center Leaves a Light On • Kristine Hansen Staff Writer When the Women's Center receives a call about sexual assault, they are ready to act. "First, we find out ifthe person is safe and get them to a shelter if needed," said Becky Cooper, a trained sexual assault adyocate for the past two years. Area shelters include Women's Horizons, Kenosha Women's Resource Center, KASA (Kenosha Against Sexual Assault) and Racine Hospitals. If the victim is calling from the site, a trained advocate travels to the site. If a report needs to be filed with Campus Police and/or City Police, the advocate goes with. Kenosha Commission and Planned Parenthood are called upon if fur- ther assistance is needed. If the victim does not want to be identified, she can call to have someone to talk to. "We are not certified counselors, but we are trained as.advocates. Training teaches [us] about laws and proce- dures and also gives [us] good lis- tening skills," Cooper reassures. Cooper loves her job at the Women's Center and expresses a heartfelt interest and concern for women who have been abused. When asked about the programs they work with, energy rises in her voice. When asked about victims she is unable to help, she says, "It's hard to know I can't stop the problem. I can only point them in the right direction. I hate to see them walk away." While sexual assault and domes- tic violence are two main areas of interest, the Center also deals with divorce, co-dependency, alco- holism, assertiveness training, spirituality issues and any other issues concerning women. The Women's Center works hard at being active on campus. The month of October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A specialist on breast cancer will be coming in to speak. The last week of October is Sexual Assault Awareness Week with various events throughout the week. Take Back the Night on October 26 con- sists ·of a march and rally. If you feel you are a victim of either sexual assault or domestic violence, stop by the Women's Center. The center on addiction & substance abuse at Columbia University found that on college campuses nationwide 95% of violent crime is alcohol related. 90 % of all reported campus rape is alco- hol related, and 80% of all vandalism on campus is alcohol related. The video will target three audiences: policy- makers and elected officials, middle class women,, and poor women. . Politicians are targeted because of the discrep- ancy between the public's views of poor women I and the women's views of themselves. "The pub- I lie view is very one-dimensional," which McBrady sees every time she "attend[sl a public hearing or I see Is] a report on welfare." Middle class women are targeted because ! ''there is fear amid the middle class that the poor\ are hurting them. That's not the case. It's I the rich who are hurting them." Poor t women are also targeted because, according to McBrady, they need to hear the stories of women like themselves. They need to recog- nize the similarities among their lives. This u will help strengthen them and empower s them to improve their lives. e "A lot more education of poor women S needs to be done on the current policies. Women need to band together and work together because the most oppressive Iegisla-, tion is coming down on them," says McBrady. "Ultimately, it will affect their children, who are our future." McBrady is very pleased with the inter- [ views so far. The women have been "very forthcoming and got a chance to relax in front of the camera." McBrady has gathered 12 hours of footage of women from different poverty situations. She has spoken with Native American Indian women and older women, and will cover black women's stories in Milwaukee. ' McBrady hopes to start editing the ( s footage down to 30 minutes by Thanksgiving. The premiere should take 0 t place in late December or early 1996. The locale of the screening has not yet been determined, but will be announced. One of the project's goals is to use the video as an interactive tool to spur discus- sion among viewers watching it as a group. It is recommended that the video be includ- ed in the curricula of women's studies pro- grams in the UW system. McBrady has a personal interest in the video because she was a welfare mother. She credits education as the singular "ticket out of poverty." She feels she never would have gained her independence and current professional status without her education. The day-long event, entitled "Latinos in the Fine Arts: Mainstreamed and Maintaining our Identities", consisted of a general session which featured guest speaker Tess Arenas, assistant to the president for multicultural affairs of UW- Systems, and two workshops led by lead- ers of the southeastern Wisconsin Latino community. , The objective of the conference accord- ing to Edwardo D. Vargas III, member-at- large, Latinos Unidos, "... it was a won- derful opportunity for the student body to learn about the vast Latino culture in which we all may have a role. Hopefully, this will be an annual or biannual event." Along with keynote speaker Tess Arenas' presentation on Latino poetry were five other presenters. During the morning workshop, there were two teach- ers from Parksille giving two different presentations: Gabriela Cambiasso, Spanish lecturer, on literature and lan- guage in the Hispanic world, and Dr. Francisco Rios, assistant professor of teacher education, on Chicano literature. The third presentation in the morning was more of a hands-on demonstration presented by Alma Gonzales-Radky from the United Community Center in Milwaukee, in which Gonzales-Radky taught students traditional folkloric dance. The afternoon workshops consist- ed of two speakers, both from the United Community Center in Milwaukee: Mark Fraire conducted a workshop on dramatic arts and theater and John Jacquez led a workshop on mariachi music. In general, "it was great educational experience and a good opportunity for the community to get involved with the University," said Jesus Farfan, a member of Latinos Unidos. The conference was attended by stu- dents and staff from Parkside and some Hispanic students from Kenosha's Bradford High School and Racine's Park and Horlick High Schools. Although the participants were very enthusiastic, there was some regret about the low attendance. As the president of Latinos Unidos, Alban Anthony Flores expressed, "This was an opportunity for all ofthe community to learn about Latinos in fine arts. I had hoped the cam- pus community would have attended, but was disappointed in their attendance. This showed lack of support outside Latinos Unidos. Overall, this was a very educational experience." The event was organized by all of the officers and members as a group effort, and was hosted by Latinos Unidos vice- president Jorge Figueroa. Jorge said that much energy was expended and he "would like to thank all the Latinos Unidos mem- bers that helped out with the posters, tickets, and everything else ...[as well as] the BSU members that showed their sup- port." Th wind up the event, there was a dance commemorating "EI Grito de Lares," the Puerto Rican Independence Day with Claudio y su Orquestra playing salsa and merengue music. Nelson Ranger Columnist Baseball fans in Wisconsin may not be singing "Take me out to the ball game" after October 1st.The lease that the Brewers have on County Stadium is over after this particular game. Subsequently, the Brewers will not have a legal obligation to stay in Wisconsin. If they leave, Milwaukee will be only the sec- ond city (after Washington) to losemajor league baseball teams twice. The changing economics (greed?) of baseball has had the Brewers angling for a new play- ground since 1989. A new park PSGA? oTy Wilda Entertainment Editor Given an hour to kill on a Friday and a sick sense of bumor, one might find enjoy- ment in attending a student government meeting. It's kmd of like watching a Comedy Channel presenta- tion of the US Senate pro- ceedings. First, there's the President, Mr. Tom Richie. Elected to the position under questionable circumstances bya large block of votes from the athletic department, his term has thus far been a search for an agenda and a plan. Most recently he has means no mnre money problems, or at least that's what Bud Selig's Brew Crew would have us believe. If the brewers get their new taxpayer-backed toy, they will still be left with the same prob- lems of a small-market team. Only legitimate revenue sharing and labor peace can save base- ball. The game used to have a uni- versal afford ability for everyone. As a boy, $10 would get me down to a Cubs game by train, a decent stay, goodies, back home by train and I still would have change. Has anybody priced a seat lately? No wonder they can't draw an audience or a crowd! Who can afford to go? If the state lawmakers vote to fund a new park, they'll be mak- ing a mistake. If Selig can't make the Brewers profitable, then he should sell it to a Wisconsinite who can. That's the best way to save baseball for Wisconsin. It's irresponsible to make hon- est taxpayers contribute $160 million to a bunch of million- aires. If taxes go up, then put the money where it does some good, like in education. Bud Selig had the class not to tell the citizens of Wisconsin, "My way or the highway." That doesn't mean he needs us to build him a new ball park. I like rocks year. An election is to be held in October, to elect the 9 fall Senate seats. So far, only the timeline for this election has been completed. Petitions for candidacy are supposed to be available Monday, Oct. 9 and due back by Thursday, Oct. 12. The election will be held Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 18 and 19. No plans as of yet have been made for the second round of elec- tions, should this one go as well as last year's. Parkside will also be the site of a United Council meeting in February of 1996. Some confusion over how exactly to accommodate this meeting still exists as the Senate debates keeping the meeting off campus and con- fined to area hotels ("Please don't let them see this place," said one Senator) or using the abundant, avail- able and cheaper resources of this school. At least half of the current crop of politicians face the prospect of a re-election cam- paign in less than a month. Now may be a good time to check out what student gov- ernment is up to. Maybe even decide you can do a bet- ter job. tried to improve the increas- ingly low campus opinion of PSGA by getting govern- ment involved with PAB in sponsoring entertainment on campus. He has given gov- ernment funds to PAB to help bring acts to campus and has been active in pro- moting these events. He and new senate president pro- tempore, Teri Jacobson, have also been busy promoting government and getting the word out on anti-student leg- islation by speaking at the dorms and in classes. His main nemesis in the senate is the 2 issue senator, Tom Belongia. This Tom is most vocal on an anti- Neumann campaign that has involved letters to the Kenosha News, Ranger and EDITORIAL POLICY Ranger News encourages letters to the Editor. His other main concern is to oppose Tom Richie on any matter he can find. It's amazing how much nothing he can find to argue with during a senate meet- ing. It's also a wonder how they can get anything done while debating all these petty details just for the sake of argument. In the senate's version of musical chairs, there seems to be constant vacancies in the ranks of government. Last year, most of the judi- cial branch either graduated or quit, and at least one replacement candidate quit rather than deal with the job of senate baby-sitter that the justices have become. Senate vacancies have occurred due to graduation (Jeff Weniger), loss of eligi- bility (Ami Orava), and dis- gust with the current state of the senate (Anthony Flores, Jimmi Nicholson, Gabe Millerd). Of course, the senate lost no time in replacing these positions as quickly and quietly as possi- ble through their extensive search and screen process of asking who had friends available to take the jobs. In the past two weeks, without much ado or fanfare, new senators Casey Green and Julia K. Beaver were sworn in. Also done in this behind- closed-doors, keep-it-quiet atmosphere was the han- dling of last year's botched PSGA raffle. It turns out that a group complaining of the apathy on campus has a problem dealing with apathy in its own ranks. Only approximately 20% of the tickets necessary to pay for the raffle were sold. Senate first extended the time limit on the raffle last spring, but was still unable to meet the goals of the project. They then let the raffle lapse through the summer in vio- lation of state gaming laws, and yet did not find a way to rectify the situation. The first three meetings of the year had votes concerning the raffle before the floor, as the Senate waffled on the decision between complying with state law and saving their own public image. In the end, the raffle has been canceled and plans to refund ticket money are being drawn up. Uncertainty still remains, however, in exactly how to act.
