Advocates Supporting Parkside and Educating for Nonviolence (A.S.P.E.N), is ajoint service' that offers support and trains advocates. The Surviving Sexual Assault Advocacy Program (SSAAP) was started in 1991 by the Dean of Students Office in collaboration with Parkside Women's Center, Student Health, and the University Police. This program's name was later changed to ASPEN, adding. domestic violence and stalking to the issues for which advocates are trained. An advocate can be any individual trained to plead the case of another, help with problems, listen, or provide support during the recovery process. Advocates also help by being the mediator between police and victims. Advocates are trained to provide education on different types of assaults. Sexual assault can be unwanted sexual contact, stalking, domestic violence, or dating- relationship violence. Marlene Schlecht, a UW-Parkside officer for 23 years said, "This kind of work is not always easy. I got involved with (ASPEN) while investigating a sexual assault case and thought...1 need help." "Police officers try to stick to the facts and remain unbiased," said Schlecht. She also said that sometimes the questioning process leads to the officers appearing as though they do not believe the victim's story. Spirit Night Cancelled BY MATIDAS D GAUGER & NICK HONECK Following a successful day of events during Discover Asia, the scheduled Ranger Pride Exhibition event was supposed to showcase the students' spirit. If the cheer "We've got spirit. Yes we do. We got spirit. How about you?" was posed as a question to UW-Parkside students, it's not clear what the answer would be. On Saturday, October 15, Fall Fest's Discover Asia prngram presented the Ranger Pride Exhibition at the SAC Center. "Ranger Spirit Night is [the Athletic Department's] contribution to Fall Fest," Assistant Director of Student Activities Stephanie Sirovatka- Marshall stated in an e-mail. Students might remember the event as being previously called the Family Fun Weekend, which was merged with Fall Fest for the first time this year. The Ranger Pride Exhibition, which mirrors events at colleges allover the United States, was made a part of Discover Asia week in order to launch the 2005 UW-Parkside Basketball tearns. A similar event the night before at UW- Milwaukee drew 1,500 students, as reponed by The UWM Post. There was only one problem with UW·Parkside's event, almost no one showed up. "1 want to say ... 10 to 15 people [were present]," said student Carly Surber. "When I arrived. people were already on their way out," Flyers advertising Fall Fest's Discover Asia program were posted throughout the UW-Parkside campus. Albeit in small print, the Ranger Spirit Exhibition was included on all of the signs. "It's absolutely pathetic." said Surber, "I think it could have been advertised better. I don't really think it was advertised separate from Discover Asia." Athletic Director Dave Williams said the event was included on the Discover Asia flyers and not separately advertised because of cost. The Athletic Department's decision not to fund separate advertising was prompted by the belief that the event would be poorly attended. I have grown more through the editor-in-chief position than any other experience I have had - including my academic ~ursuits. Even my time the Army, a huge growing experience for me, cannot match the personality growth I have gone through In the past . two years here at The Ranger News. I have always been a little goofy, but serious about any subject matter that was important to me. Two years ago and for my entire life before that, I was very shy around people I didn't know well. I went around trying not to disagree with anyone and adapting to other people's viewpoints to avoid confrontations. Looking back, I only wanted people to like me, so I would strive to make their day. It was the lifestyle of a sucker. "The editor-in-chief of the newspaper cannot be a sucker or aim to please everyone. While doing what he or she believes fa be right and bein-g as fair as possible is required, there is no way to please everyone while in this position. If the staff of the newspaper is doing its job, and the newspaper intends to provide relevant information for the community whether it is controversial or not, then there will automatically be people who don't like the editor-in-chief. I feel confident in saying that the same concept applies to the head of any organization; if a group disagrees with a resolution passed by the student government senatbrs, they might hold it against the student government president. 'There-are some typical lines I've gotten used to saying since I took on the responsibility of editor-in-chief, such as, "I cannot guarantee that we'll have a reporter covering every story there is," and "We do not accept stories about an organization written by the organization." Every now and then I say things like, "No we are not looking for advice columnists," and there is always, "I'm sony if you thought we were too critical on a recent news story," My personal favorite is, "Thank you for complimenting the paper - I'll pass the word on to our staff." This position requires stamina - physical, mental, and emotiona1. When I began realizing that pleasing everyone was not practical (which didn't mean I had to be impolite), I focused on the more important issue of creating and coordinating a solid, relevant community newspaper. AMSLC Comes To UW-Parkside BY KYLE VAN PELT AND TYRAN SAFFOLD JR From Friday, October 7 to Sunday, October 9, more than 300 students from the University of Wisconsin system attended the 2005 American Multicultural Student Leadership Conference (AMSLC) at UW-Parkside. 'This conference is a University-wide conference. Every year it goes from one university to the next:' said Mary Xiong, coordinator of Retention Programs and an advisor for the Office of Mnlticultural Stndent Affairs at UW-Parksicfe. Last year, the event was held in Madison, WI. "This conference often has workshops that deal with career enhancement, racial issues, and helps students find out how to get that perfect job," said Xiong. "Mostly, we have students who are from the bigger universities, verses the smaller universities." Overall, the conference will teach students how to build credit, obtain leadership skills, and'Iearn how to be business professional at an actual job or workplace, things that will be essential to them after graduation. AMSLC kicked off on Friday October 7 with the two-hour Community Service Extravaganza, which took place from 4 to 6 p.m. More than 30 UW-Parkside students, staff, and faculty members volunteered to help out with the workshop. Student organizations that helped out with the event included members from Circle K, Parkside Asian Organization, Black Student Union, and the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta. "Every year, they do a community-service project, and we love community service," said Marie Smith, an advisor for the UW-Parkside Career' Center. "We feel that it is important to give back to the community and to help people in the community, so we are doing numerous projects today. All of the projects will benefit our local community." The Community Service Extravaganza features a number of service projects, which included the following: fleece scarves, woven potholders, inspirational rocks, hand'beaded angels, beaded icicles, beaded candy cane ornaments, reindeer magnets, AMSLC creative expression journals, and greeting cards. Each university attending the event was encouraged to donate the following items: soda tabs, children's books, soup labels, box tops for education, and non-perishable food items. There were nearly 9,500 soda . tabs, 526 canned food items, 432 soup labels, nine children's books, and five box tops for education donated during the event. WI 53141 rangernews@uwp.edu WIPZ Still Seeking FCC Licensure BY JOHN POPPE Nearly five years after former station manager Mike Dicello submitted an application for WIPZ to become licensed by the Federal Communications Conunission (FCC), there remains no movement on the issue. Current station manager Andrew Scheeler has been working with the office of Student Activities in Union 209 as well as Director of Public Relations Dave Buchanan in order to expedite the process and find out why the application 'has not yet been properly reviewed, Since the beginning of the fall semester, Scheeler has been working with the staff of WIPZ to create better promotion for the radio station as well as work on establishing a pnblic demand for the station. A petition, which is currently in circulation, by the key staff of WIPZ seeks to do just that by getting the word out to students as well as informing them of the current struggle with the FCC. Scheeler said that he hopes to gain as many- signatures as possible in order to go to the UW System and the FCC to ask that they start looking into tbe case as soon as possible. FCC licensure is imperative in establishing an independent media source at UW- Parkside that can be taken seriously and offered as an alternative to the enormous media conglomerate of Clear Channel Communications. Once licensed, the potential market-share for WIPZ would be nearly 500,000 people at 1,000 watts of broadcasting power. Currently, WlPZ has been broadcasting to approximately 1,000 people at 18 walls. In essence, licensure would allow UW-Parkside to broadcast to the southern suburbs of Milwaukee as well as down into northern Illinois near the Waukegan area. The potential to pick up more local sponsorships, nationally syndicated shows, and larger broadcast area alone make licensure absolutely necessary. UW-Parkside is located between two of the largest cities in the Midwest, and the ability to gain its own foothold in that market is crucial (0 the survi val and growth ofWIPZ. At the center of this planet is an iron core, which undoubtedly has to do with gravity and keeping everything grounded. Beyond the iron core there are several layers, and existing atop all the layers are various combinations of water and rock that we call oceans, lakes. beaches, mountains and other things. Somehow, life happens on Earth. This is how we began our Wednesday Workshop last week, where we discussed various aspects of leadership. It may have been a silly way to start, but the point. was to get everyone to think about the fact that we are really just humans on Earth, and we define our purpose for being here. What we' do with our lives must somehow include Earth, and although this is terribly obvious, it is often forgotten. Why is it necessary to remember we are on Earth? Several reasons. First, everyone is here, so no matter how rich or poor or advantaged or disadvantaged a person is, he or she is still where everyone else is. Second, there is no reason to ever be shy, because everyone is just here on Earth trying to figure out what humanity is doing. Third, and most importantly, a person who knows where he or she is can better decide where he or she wants to go; in essence, it enables the establishment of goals and priorities. . Ever since we started holding workshops, my co-editor and I have said that they would be worthwhile not only to the newspaper staff, but any student also. While it's true that most of our workshops are centered around the newspaper industry, all the information we put out in 45 minutes or less can be applied to everyday life. For instance, OUf first workshop was on writing news articles. It dealt with research, critical thinking, organizing, and the structure of writing - all of which might be necessary for any job or project. The workshop this Wednesday is on photojournalism. It's not like everyone is going to go out and become a photographer, but the skins that wi11be touched on can certainly. be used by anyone who uses a camera from time to time. In a couple weeks, we'Il have a panel discussion on objectivity in the media, which, again, can be highly insightful information. I'm not throwing out this information as a shameless plug to get more people to OUL workshops. However much I would like to see more students taking advantage of opportunities like these an over campus - whether it is a workshop held by The Ranger News, a VIP Leadership Series event held by Student Activities, or any formal or informal informational presentation by professors and guests here at UW-Parkside - the most I can do is encourage students to take advantage. Every human on Earth win eventually die. It's not that scary if it's aecepted as being inevitable. While we are alive, we have to take direction of our own lives. It's up to us to find purpose one way or 1f Q another. Most of the people who will read this letter are part of an institution of expanding education on Earth. Because we know where we ere, it's time to figure out .,. why we're here and where we want to go next. Henry D. On September 29, the Wisconsin State Senate passed Assembly Bill 499, which would make human cloning, and parthenogenesis punishable by Jaw. f On Octnber 3, ~ the stem cell research .. institute located at ! UW-Madison received ~ a $16 million grant 'J' from the National ~~ Institute of Health to t~ <i.J; establish the nation's !~. first and only stem cell bank. Concurrently, Ii UW-Parkside hosted ~ i a forum to discuss j ! the controversy, The Promise and Problems of Stem Cell Research. Some groups, including Wisconsin Right to Life, supported Bill 499 from its earliest stages. . WHITE It seems that for Wisconsin, Indiana, and Illinois college students, new restrictions have been placed on our more than over 200- year-old constitution. On June 20, the federal Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals limited our First Amendment rights. To fully understand this problem, tbere is a large legal web that must be untangled. The most recent example is the case of Hasty vs Carter. In this case, Governors State University student journalists filed a lawsuit against Dean Patricia Carter after she declared that she bad final dictation over their newspaper. Carter also prevented an issue of the paper from being publisbed. Before the Hasty case, conflicts about tbe first amendment and student journalism were settled by the Hazelwood School District vs Kuhlmeir verdict in 1988. Hazelwood School District vs Kuhlrneir resulted in restrictions affecting high school and elementary students, leaving college journalists to still be able to practice their trade without fear of censorship. ", ••••• r· •• ~-, .~.- >-, ., •• ' r , .. , , . , . ~ . . . . .. .." 2 The Ranger News - Letter From The Editor 1 went to the student government meeting last Friday in Molinaro D137, It was the first one I had been to in quite a while. and I was a bit nervous walking in, not only because of the typical government/media relationship, but 1 also figured a number of people would be wondering and speculating about my presence there. My anxiety was eased when a couple senators waved at me and a few even came up to shake my hand, They were glad to see me and unconcerned about my intention for being there, It gave me comfort, even though 1 knew there were other members of PSGA who were specifically avoiding eye contact with me. 1 signed the guest sheet and watched the meeting commence. I realized, as I sat there listening to President Dave Koss and others discuss business, that perhaps The Ranger News was covering PSGA insufficiently. In the past, we've had a reporter go to their meeting and write 300 to 500 words on what was talked about. We called itthe "PSGABeat." Well- rounded as it was intended to be, it only touched briefly on the actions student government was pursuing before moving on to the next paragraph, where maybe a new senator or justice was sworn in. While we are never "out to get" student government, our staff knows they are among the only students who can hold PSGA publicly accountable. But that is not our only role. It became apparent to me for the first time that everything PSGA does deserves its own article, more than the simple paragraphs we have been providing. Unfortunately. looking at past issues. most of the consistent content we provide on student government with substantial information deals with their faults. In my opinion, this is a bias we have held, and now that we have acknowledged it, it is time we straighten it out. We have decided to nix the "PSGA Beat." We will still have a staff member at all student government meetings, but mainly to cultivate story ideas to assign reporters for full-length articles. A rumor has reached me recently that student government representatives are going to start refusing interviews with-our reporters. H this happens. there is no way we can make improvements to our relationship with them, . 1 know President Dave Koss doesn't want the drama of "he said/she said" rumors, and 1 don't either. We only report the truth, and if we are wrong, we will run a correction. That said, I'm standing by every article we have run so far - but readers can expect a more well rounded view of student government from now on. Henry D. Unity Prayer for Hurricanes Rita and Katrina BY LARA DAKE Underneath the Union Bridge, approximately 25 people participated ill unity prayers spoken by Rainbow Alliance members for the victims of Hurricanes Rita and Katrina. . . The first prayer took place at noon on September 28, led by Kanika Jones. For those who arrived late, a second prayer was led by Dayvin Hallman at 12:05·p.m. Hallman said, "It is something that is difficult to put into words because it means many different things to many different people. . We forget that our prayer here has more power than any dollar bill we could put down." PAGl7 Sigma Delegates Yet to File Report Students Petition for Wang BY NlCHOLAS MICHAEL RAVNlKAR AND RYAN KAMPHUIS As of Sunday night, delegates to last month's United Council general assembly in Marrionette bad not yet turned in their required reports to the appr~priale campus offices, Last spring, the PSGA judicial branch, in the case of the Coalition of Fairness v. Koss and Sernenas, decided that students who attend any event with expenses paid for by the PSGA segregated fees account must submit a written report on the experiences and knowledge gained while attending. According to the decision. the reports have specific guidelines for format and length and must be turned in within five class days following the event. Each delegate's report must be kept with the'PSGA office, UW-Parkside library, Student Activities and The Ranger News. The judicial decision also stated that failure to submit a report results in. "an indefinite suspension of travel privileges paid by the PSGA segregated fee account until a report meeting the...criteria is submitted." The Ranger News published the judicial decision in the May 13, 2005 issue. BY CHRlSTlNAFANNING Continuing to support Professor George Wang, select students have responded to the appeal made to the Board of Regents by organizing letters of petition in Wang's favor. "Not helping Dr. Wang would be 'denying the reason why I took up both sociology and criminal justice. [ see someone in need and I help," stated student Joseph Duncan in a letter to the Board of Regents regarding why helping Professor Wang is important to him. In addition to letters, supporters have been circulating petitions. The first of which was started on March 25 by Duncan and revised about three weeks ago. Already having nearly a few hundred signatures from students, faculty and staff of the UW- Parkside community, organizers are hoping to gain more by familiarizing people with websites and through articles on hand. "It was very easy to find supporters for a professor that is well-liked and continues to score higher on his teacher evaluations than his peers in his deparlment," stated Duncan in an e-mail. "Everyone wants to do what they can to make sure this teacher remains here and to address the issues ignored by administration ... Dear Ranger News Staff; I realized as I was reading this last issue, (1) that 1 had heen waiting for this issue to see if, and how, you would follow up with a previous story, and "(2)that you had, and (3) that you inserted a "sic" most appropriately in another story, and (4) that I had several stories to read and reflect on, and (5) that The Ranger News has become a very impressive newspaper. Kudos! -Rehecca Ferguson, Ph.D. Adult Student Advisor Hey Henry- You handed me The Ranger News as I walked through UW-P yesterday. I had just read last week's issue thus initially rejected it until I noted a different front page and yon said it is now weekly -- I am delighted! No more old issues just sitting around! Weekly ensnres it will be more in tune, relevant, timely, and will enhance both student and faculty readership and inputs. If the 9.13.05 issue reflects yonr go-forward plan of action, kudos tu you and your staff. This is 'must read' stuff. Keeping students and faculty up-to-date on all things relevant will ensure an enriched UW-P experience -- thanks to The Ranger News! -Peg Fisher First and foremost, thank you both for the positive feedback. It helps us to know our fellow community members are appreciating our efforts. It used to be difficult to get anything but harsh criticism. Back in Fall 2003, there were about three or four staff members making sure the newspaper was published. After one issue in particular (September 26,2003), we were all moping about the office because we only received severe criticism, and it made us all question our involvement with The Ranger News. That was rock bottom for the newspaper, and we slowly, issue by issue, climbed out of the hole. . I was talking with my co-editor Saturday night. and we carne to the conclusion that last year The Ranger News was dedicated to proving its value and credibility to the UW-Parkside community. We even flaunted our pride a little bit. This year, we have no such pretensions and are trying to make it the tightest newspaper possible. This means that every issue needs crisp design, no "fluff' articles, and thorough copyediting. We still have some things to clear up, but we have indeed come a long way, and we certainly are proud. The weekly schedule helps. A biweekly newspaper needs to be formatted more like a magazine, with longer lasting stories and less time-sensitive information. Here is the distinction I draw: a magazine (or biweekly newspaper) is more of a novelty publication, and a newspaper (especially daily or weekly) is more of a necessary publication. At this point in the semester, we've put out five issues. Last year. our fifth issue didn't come out until November. If we are going to continue growing issue by issue, then the weekly schedule is going to help us improve faster. Our primary goal this year is not only to have the UW-Parkside community respect us, but to be proud of us as well. We're going to be entering several national college newspaper contests throughout ?4 the year, and with our staff working hard and maintaining the direction it's going, ~ Q ._ we hope to bring home a commendable award. _ Again, thank you both for taking time to encourage us. For approximately the past year, many questions have beenraised as to whether or not Professor George Wang was obligated to teach the Sociology 101class assignment he last refusedon October II, 2004. The process the university andProfessor Wang have gone throughhas led the Faculty Rights andResponsibilities Committee (FRRC) to recommend a demotion forthe embattled professor, which wasaccepted by Chancellor Keating and submitted to the Board ofRegents. Professor Wang and the FRRC both identified four central issues involving his case. The- \ conclusions differed greatly. \ The first issue is whether or notProfessor Wang was hired to teach for both the sociology department and the weekend college. Professor Wang was hired in [994 to teach for the organizational studiesprogram, also known as theweekend college track for interdisciplinary studies. At about 9 a.m. on September 22, the Milwauke-based pro-life group, Missionaries to the Preborn, made Uw-Parkside tbe last stop in a four day tour of different universities across southeastern Wisconsin. Aaron Beay, a member of the group, said that they were "showing the truth about abortion. Retro Credits Get Attention BY RYAN KAMPHUIS The Modern Languages retroactive credit policy conjured up several different stories and emotions in recent weeks. After the subject first appeared in Tbe Ranger News two weeks ago, several students and faculty have been talking about the policy. and expressing their opinions on it. Many students have applauded the coverage and highlighted the discriminatory nature. Others have expressed their desire to learn more about it because it is something that has affected a lot of students for many years. and not enough information is available. Students who have been affected the most by the retroactive credit policy have not come forward to date to tell their own stories. largely noting a fear of retaliation. Gorge Miramontes, a native Spanish speaker from Mexico said in arecent.interview that be agrees the policy does· not target only Spanish students, but applies to any of the three languages offered at UW-Parkside. He also noted that, because of the large Hispanic population at UW· Parkside, this policy does have a disproportionately large impact on that particular group. "The 'heritage' part would affect a lot of people - especially non-native speakers that do not even know [the language]," Miramontes said. "I know a lot of people, especially from the southwest, but also many other states. that have Hispanic last names yet have absolutely no background in speaking Spanish." The retroactive credit policy was originally developed to encourage U.S. high schools to provide quality education in a foreign language. The policy rewards students with retroactive credits at the university level after the student demonstrates the proficiencies learned at the high school level, either by a test or a grade obtained in the first university course taken in the language. continued on pg. 4 This Week's Foreign Film: The Story ofthe Weeping Camel PAGE 14 Thi 2 The Ranger News September 27, 200s --- Letter From The Editor I hear the suggestion that media is biased every now and then. 'The liberal media" is. commonly used phrase that stands out in my mind. One of my roommates told me I was working for a "liberal newspaper," And when I'was distributing papers last Tuesday, a gentleman refused to take the new issue because he said it was "Parkside Propaganda." I would like to thank these people in print for telling me what they think The Ranger News is, although they are dead wrong. Last October, we ran a story on President George W. Bush's speech in Milwaukee. The staff writer who covered it outlined Bush's plan and quoted the speech he gave. There was no second-guessing the president or concern on bow John Kerry might respond; it was just the facts of what Bush said at the event. To me, it seemed the article could have ended up on Bush's website or on one of his campaign flyers. But nobody called us a conservative news outlet. In March, we bad a staff member take a leave of absence from the newspaper to pursue the stud~nt government presidency. He led a student protest through the main concourse here at Parkside during that month, and the newspaper reported on it. Some called us bias because we were reporting on news a staff member of ours was creating, althougb that staff member had nothing to do with the reporting and writing of the story. If the other candidate made news like that, we certainly would have.reported on it. Which brings us to today. After last Thursday's gathering around Union Bridge to either protest abortion or protest the protesters, a lot of people asked me how The Ranger News was going to cover the story. It was disappointing, to say,the least. Questions like, "What side is the newspapergoing to take?" and suggestions such as, "You should make it against the 10-year-olds holding the signs," were flying at me left and right. It was as if they wanted the story to be biased or slanted in a certain direction, While there is a spot for opinions in the newspaper, news is what we provide. it is not our duty to represent a side, but to write a well-rounded story. . The difference is clear in this particular issue of The Ranger News. I'm extremely proud of the front-page story that covered last Thursday's happening-It takes no side, and there are equal quotes from as many perspectives as reasonably possible, Our op-ed section - a forum for opinions of all types - gives a different account on the events of last Thursday. We have an editorial contributed by August-Marie Wagner-Richardson, and Nicholas Michael Ravnikar shares his thoughts on the matter in his weekly editorial, "The Beat Box." Neither shares the same viewpoint, and if a student or faculty member presented an article in favor of the protesters' cause, we surely would have printed it also. We have a clear agenda to push here at The Ranger News: to find information and present it to the community, Nothing more, When our reporters cover a story, they don't let their personal opinions and feelings get involved, When we edit the stories, we questions ourselves on everything from word choices and quotes to whether or not another side needs to be included to make it the well-rounded article it needs to be. I'd like to see more students share their thoughts so that The Ranger News can represent more sides in the opinion section, The easiest way of doing that is by submitting about 100 words on any topic to rangernews@uwp.edu. We'll print it as long as it's not libelous. The other option is to submit an editorial of no more than 750 words on anything recent dealing with UW-Parkside, and if it is a reasonably good editorial, we'll give it a run. I'm also open to community members sharing their thoughts with me, even if they don't necessarily want it to end up in print. Indeed, 1am a student and I have a lot to learn. Architects: New Union One Step Closer STAFF REP0RT Photo By: A1l1oon Boyle On Tuesday, September 13, Rich Bamburak of wrw Architects presented the proposed layout of the Union expansion. The layout includes a new dining area on the ground level of the Union, a lounge and television area in the D2 level where the bowling center is currently located and a ballroom on the concourse, or Ll level of the building. The expansion will also include space for the campus bookstore, student organizations, OMSA and other student body related attractions. Bamburak said nothing in the current layout is set in stone, but it's a step closer in the planning process. Wang Still Hangin' Around I ,BY RYAN KAMPHUIS AND CHRISTINA FANNING Releasing its recommendation, the Faculty Rights and I Responsibilities Committee (FRRC) has given some closure to questions raised by students, faculty and staff curious about the employment status of a sociology professor whom the chancellor rec01jlmended for dismissal in the spring of 2005. On June 3 the Faculty Rights and Responsibilities Committee commended that Professor Xun (George) Wang receive a demotion to Assistant Professor and a reduction of $5,000 in his salary for refusing to teach a Weekend College course last fall. The committee's decision is in response to the administrative actions following Wang's refusal to teach Introduction to Sociology asa weekend college course last year. Wang refused to teach the course because he was assigned to teach three courses for the weekend college without compensation and felt that was an unfair andinequitable employment practice. The initial response by the university came when Donald Cress, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, filed a complaint Onemonth later accusing Wang of misconduct. In the complaint, I DeanCress asked for dismissal or disciplinary action in the matter. VIceChancellor William Streeter then began an investigation of theallegations. ,Since this first complaint was filed, there have been several heanngs held by university officials as well as demonstrations and actsof support for Professor Wang by students. Wang spoke to students about his stance on the issue and i gavehis reasons for refusing to teach the course in December, and the Parkside Student Government Association (PSGA) passed \ a resolution shortly thereafter supporting Wang's continued employment at Uw-Parkslde. PSGA's resolution stated,"[To] assign one individual to teach all three courses for the Weekend College without any compensation is an unfair, inequitable employment practice. It does not change the unfair nature of the assignment, regardless if [...] Wang took the job voluntarily in 1994." The report went 'on to accede that the university's treatment of Wang was "different" and "unfair" in comparison with other faculty of the sociology and anthropology department. ·"1 support the resolution that was. passed by student government last semester," then-Vice President Dave Koss said in an interview with The Ranger News. But Wang received a letter on March 3 from John Keating, UW-Parkide chancellor, that recommended his dismissal to the UW-System Board of Regents. A student rally was held on March 7 in reaction to the letter. in which approximately 80 students, including current PSGA President Dave Koss and Vice President Christopher Landgrebe, marched from the Union Cinema to the gathering spot in Upper Main Place. where studenl organizers read a letter from Professor Wang explaining his complaints and the gathered chanted slogans in support of the professor. Local media swarmed the issue throughout the spring and early summer, but details regarding Wang's status as a professor have been scarce, as campus and system administrators who have .yet to make their final decision regarding the matter have declined comment on the basis that it is a personnel issue. TherecommendationbytheFacutlyRightsandResponsibilities Committee is an alternative that has been presented to Chancellor Keating to present to the Board of Regents rather than dismissal. In order for either dismissal or the reduction in rank to take place, the UW-System Board of Regents must approve the measure because of Professor Wang's status as a tenured professor. Near Tragedy Averted At Soccer Game BY JASON GRlFFES Tragedy nearly struck the uw- Parkside campus during a recent men's horne soccer game. On September II, the Rangers were hosting Drury University at Wood Road Field when official, Dennis Weibe, had a massive heart attack. The incident occurred during the second half of the game. "The game administrators noticed that Mr. Wiebe appeared to be disoriented," said Dave Williams, athletic director for UW-Parkside. "He bent over twice and looked as though he was dizzy." Williams said that Wiebe admitted he didn't feel well after grabbing his left arm in pain. They stopped the game immediately. When approached by Williams and athletic trainer Deena Curtis, Wiebe fell directly into their arms. Curtis evaluated Wiebe's pain and symptoms then hooked him up to an AED, or automated external defibrillator, which monitors the individual's heart patterns and will administer shock if needed. 911 was immediately called, and Williams went to Wood Road to flag down the ambu lance. . UW-Parkside police arrived first on the scene, about two minutes after the call. The Kenosha ambulance showed up about five minutes after the call was made. Wiebe was rushed to the hospital where he was administered emergency surgery that day. Wiebe was released from the hospital and is now at home resting. He has a long road of recovery ahead of him. "I would like to say that 1 am very proud nf our athletic training staff for the way this unfortunate situation was handled," said Williams. "They should be commended for their efforts." Curtis said that she is also very .proud of everyone who helped out in the incident "There is not a single thing I would do different with the individual," she said. According to Curtis, many individuals commented on how well the 'situation was handled and that it looked as if they had done it before. The only things that she thought could be changed were some of the aspects of the situation. such as crowd control. There is a system in place for when this type of episode occurs. The NCAA ranks sporting events according to their risk factor and takes into account the crowd attending as well as the nature of the sporting event. This factor is what decides where CUIUS and the mobile AED machine are on a given day. The higher-risk-factor events are where the AED machine will be available. This does not mean, however, that if there are multiple events the AED machine will only be avaiJable at the one with the highest risk. Thi 2 -- The Ranger News Letter From The Editor Toward the end of last year and over the course of the summer, a lot of people asked me if I was serious about the newspaper going weekly. Second guesses were happening left and right - I've heard everything from "Not enough happens on campus" to "It's going to be impossible for the staff to balance a weekly newspaper and academic classes." I was also asked if it is reasonable to publish a weekly newspaper, given UW-Parkside has no journalism department. Working for the newspaper requires a staff member to dismiss the belief that nothing happens on campus. Many students quickly become poster-blind, because they get bombarded and overwhelmed with flyers, brochures and information throughout the hallways here. In order to produce a newspaper, we have to be aware of all these happenings and believe that the suggestion that nothing . happens on campus is utterly false. During the Chancellor's Leadership Institute, a sort of student leadership training for organization members this summer, Jack Keating said that some of the most successful people are the ones who are busy all the time. In so many words, he went on to say that when a person has a jam-packed schedule and sticks to it, that person has to schedule time for everything, including recreation. When it's all mapped out, priorities are set in place, and time is spent in (hopefully) the most productive way possible. I believe this is true, which is why I'm not at alJ worried about balancing my academics with the newspaper. Such a busy lifestyle certainly takes some getting used to, but at the end of each day it feels great, and it has ultimately proven to provoke me to study more than I did when I used to have three days in a row off. I know it has been difficult for our staff, but they are adjusting and continuing to perform well. The question concerning not having a journalism program here is off the mark too. While I wish there was a major, minor, or even certificate in journalism offered at UW-Parkside, I believe the best way to learn journalism is to do journalism. Currently, The Ranger News is the journalism program. Our first workshop, Wednesday, September 21 at noon in Molinaro D139, is entitled "Journalism 101: An Introduction to Purpose and Prose." Co-hosted by the co-editors of The Ranger News, we are going to explain the operations and processes of journalism to our new staff members, potential staff members, and any student in.terested in learning how to do journalism. Our claim: any student who attends this 45-minute workshop will leave having practiced journalism with a foothold on how to continue. If enough students show interest in journalism, a degree in it from UW-Parkside will develop. As for the weekly thing, it's happening. After our success last year, it was the next logical step for the newspaper to take, propelling us further as an important media outlet on campus. 1fi24 Henry D. Picnics, .prizes, and Popcorn Welcome Freshman at Orientation: Phase II BY CHRISTINA r--II FANNING An estimated 700 students and 75 faculty and staff gathered into the crowded I Communication Arts Theater on the morning of September 6 for a kick -off to this I year's Phase IT of Freshman Orientation. This year's itinerary began the I day with a formal convocation. I With the staff gowned and the stage set, a small group of UW- Parkside instrumentalists played "Pomp and Circumstance:' while freshman pondered what they had gotten themselves into. "Every year we send the graduating seniors off with a formal ceremony, so we thought, let's have a way to welcome them formally," I Student Activities Coordinator Amber Engel said. "We wanted to let new students know academics are important, we care about them, and we want them to have I a good time. Education is a valuable experience, but we want you to have fun while you're here." Phase II of Freshman Orientation is a somewhat new addition, this being its second year. The school calendar typically starts the day after Labor Day, which posed theonly threat to making Phase ITan anouai I tradition. "It would be challenging to have the students come in on Labor Day," Engel said. "So we asked the Academic Policies Committee, who sets the calendar for the I year, to push the start to Wednesday, and they said 'yes.' It was a huge deal." Following the convocation was an interactive speaker, Dr. Joe Martin, who outlined street-smart strategies to "make I the grade." BYRYAN KAMPHUIS Causing frustration for some students, one department's policy regarding retroactive credits is hardly a concern for others. And while some may know what retroactive credits are and what their purpose is, facts about the Modern Languages Department's policy are hard to come by. "Retroactive credits are credits given after you have shown evidence that yo.u have mastered a certain subject matter or that you are proficient in it," Associate Vice-Chancellor fOT Student Services and Dean of Students Steve McLaughlin said. "That's done in a couple ways; either by taking a test or [... J a class and [getting] a certain grade in it, then you get additional credit for that subject matter." According to McLaughlin, there are many benefits for students who are eligible to receive these credits. "Students can gain multiple credits without having to actually enroll in those courses because of the demonstrated proficiency or mastery of the subject material," he said. "It can help you accumulate credits faster and at less cost, which helps the student move on to graduation faster." Modern Languages is one department at UW-Parkside that offers retroactive credits, however, only certain students are eligible to receive them. The department's retroactive; credit policy states, "Students who are bilingual, 'heritage,' or native speakers of a foreign language are not eligible for retroactive credit in that language." At least one student finds this policy to be discriminatory. "The thing that bothers me is the 'heritage' part," said Xavier Solis, president of Latinos Unidos. "I was born and raised in the United States. Both of my parents were born in the United States .. .I only have one grandfather who is from Mexico." Continued on page 5 • 'Fresh Start' for Freshmen Move-in STAFF REPORT Waiting in line to move into Ranger Hall is surely not how freshmen and their families wanted to spend Labor Day morning on September 5, but in order to be moved in and set up for the following day's Orientation: Phase II and the first day of classes on Wednesday, it was necessary. Three resident advisors on campus, Christopher Landgrebe, Nicholas Michael Ravnikar, and Henry D. Gaskins, coordinated a program to entertain and inform new residents as they waited until the check-in process began at noon. "We knew they would be lined up outside of Ranger Hall three hours befor~ move-in," said Gaskins. "So we decided to put sometbing together that would keep them from being to bored." .... "The first thing you have to do," I said, "is combat the apathy. After that, humans take care of the rest." It was then that I realized exactly how proud I am to be part of the media, despite all the hell we get from fellow citizens who don't necessarily understand the function of media. The media can actually provide an invaluable service to the community it serves by distributing information and bringing about public awareness. When people know what's happening, they have a reason to take action. People come up to me all the time and comment about how this is the best they have ever seen The Ranger News. or how the newspaper hasn't been this good since the 1900s. At least part of this is because we have discovered our role in theUW-P.arkside community. We provide information that students and faculty won't find on the UWP website (unless they type in the keyword: Ranger News) .. For instance, I don't recall ever being told my Parkside e-mail address won't allow me to send or receive messages that contain certain words that.someone decided L shouldn't be using. It's a change that took place over the summer, and students wouldn't know about it If The Ranger News didn't report on it (see our September 6 issue), unless they took it upon themselves to ask why certain e-mails are not going through. Providing students with such information gives them the opportunity to do something about it. No offense to Dave Buchanan or John Milke, but we cover things that University Relations will, understandably, never cover. Independent and non-agenda oriented media is the one resource citizens have; for honest, critical information. Hopefully, it provokes civic engagement and community involvement. For the same reason, Parks ide student radio, 101.7 FM WIPZ, is just as important as The Ranger News. Both media outlets have the ability to bring awareness on administrative and governmental issues, including student government politics. While UW-Parkside administration and student government can be expected to point out all the positive things they are doing, students and faculty depend on independent sources for information that may be generally unknown. Otherwise, the only types of information being provided are bake-sales, happy people, and the benefits of living in a problem-free community, when there is information that is invariably more valuable to the public. There are certain career fields I find to be highly noble, including education, health care, and public service, and these are among the most respectable things I think people can do for society. Not all media outlets aim to combat apathy and increase civic engagement. Some are simply out to tum a profit or distribute propaganda. But media at its best _ informing the public on critical issues that allow them to take action - is as noble a profession as any. Our belief in this purpose motivates us to do our jobs here at The Ranger News to the best of our abilities, and it is why we walk with pride. 1f fJ 4 Henry D. Those were rough times, because it seemed people only picked up the newspaper so they could point out the mistakes they found in it. Our readership was below 1,000, and students rarely carne in to work with us. I established one basic goal for our small staff: try to make each issue of the newspaper better than the previous. The following year things started to change for the newspaper. We found it easy to improve one issue at a time, and within a couple months our newsstands needed to be restocked regularly, because our readership was going up. More and more students came to work with us, and soon we found ourselves with a solid staff of writers, page editors and designers. We went to a couple conferences hosted by the Associated Collegiate Press, which provided us with the opportunity to learn the mechanics of journalism, see college newspaper trends across the nation, and talk to experts in the field (God forbid UW-Parkside ever get a journalism program). We came back from each of the conventions with a greater understanding of media's role in a community, not to mention motivation to succeed in what we truly aimed to do: develop a credible, well-respected newspaper. Besides the hard news we were covering, there was a pride and comradeship among OUf staff members that has been unlike anything most of us had been a part of before. In late April 2005, we received the Student Organization of the Year award. This year The Ranger News is kicking it up a notch. We're going from producing one newspaper every other week to producing one weekly. It's going to be a challenge, and it's going to be a learning process all along the way, but that's what it's all about - education. * An epic year lies in front of us. Parkside Student Government Association (PSG A), IOJ.7 FM WIPZ (UW- Parkside student radio), Parkside Activities Board (pAB), ParksideAdult Student Alliance (pAS A), and plenty of other organizations look forward to working together to increase student involvement and civic engagement here on campus. It's the perfect step for student organizations to take, and it's exactly what our community needs. Whatever happens, you'll know about it when you pick up your weekly copy of The Ranger News. 'Speaking of education, I'd like to personally invite all students to our Wednesday workshops this year. Starting Wednesday, September 21 at noon in Molinaro D139, our staff will be presenting everything from journalism basics to photojournalism to newspaper design. We even have a date lined up for professional journalists to come talk to us and tell us about their experiences in the field. OUf workshops are just another way we offer students the chance to get everything they can out of their tuition dollars. Henry D. There's going to be additional meeting rooms, programming rooms, a larger serverylkitchen area, enrollment management center, integrated services center. The admissions will move over, Cashier's, OMSA, Registrar, Financial Aid, ect." The funds for the $25 million project will come from GPR (General Program Revenue), which is basicalIy state funding, and from student fees. Student fees generally pay for things such as Student Activities, student health and counseling center and student organizations among other things like the volunteer program. Each year. there is a student appropriation committee that makes decisions about how the money is distributed. Students pay tuition and student segregated fees, increasing $100 per student toward the expansion over the next four years; this year was the first year the increased fee was applied. "It will be a little bit of an inconvienence for staff and students while in the process of construction, because what was there before will be moving and in transition," said Possehl. The cost of the 61,000 square foot addition and 56,000 square foot renovation will be approximately $25 million. "It's a renovation/expansion," said DeAnn Possehl, director of Student Life. "We're renovating curreot facilities. The building is over 30 years old, and a lot of the infrastructure needs updating - such as electrical, plumbing, and that sort of thing." Hats off to all the graduating seniors who have made it through the entire college expenence. It has been an extremely progressive year for The Ranger News, starting with II staff members and a readership of about 1,200 and ending with 33 staff members and a readership of more than 2,000. It was all capped off last month when we received the Student Organization of the Year Award. I Thanks to our entire staff, especially the graduating seniors, who (for the record) I need to thank in print: Tal Goldwater - Your nose for controversy and knowledge of the school's operations propelled the newspaper to a relevant and critical source of information. I'm glad you took on the position of news editor and stuck with it throughout the year. Your spirit will live on here at the paper. Sonya Gonzalez - Thank you for opening up my eyes to the business world. You had great ideas on how to make money and you were clutch in preparing our budget. And thanks for having the patience to deal with me. You will be missed. Nick Borns - When our sports department collapsed earlier in the semester, you took it upon yourself to pick it up, and as a result, our sports pages have never been better. You were great to have at meetings, and to have a person like you, who takes initiative in everything you touch, is the most a person in my position can ask for. To our returning staff and anyone interested in becoming a part of our team: know that we have our work cut out for us. Over the summer, we will be restructuring all aspects of the newspaper and creating a handbook to ensure an academic year that will be as successful as this was. Continuous improvement remains our priority. Next year, Parks ide students can expect a new issue weekly, with more designs and photos to compliment well-written and relevant articles. We also hope to have a web page that will be up and running by August. I have hired Nicholas Michael Ravnikar to be my co-editor, and together we can work effectively with our staff to make this the best newspaper the UW-Parkside community can possibly have. DOMA would change the wording of the Wisconsin Constitution to define marriage as between one man and one April 29, 2005' ph.262.595.2287 Offensive on Defense First Comes Love, Then Comes nOMA BY SHERRY NELSEN Hot soup and heated discussion marked the final presentation of the Soup and Substance Series at UW- Parkside for the spring semester. President Dave Koss, along with other members of the UW-Parkside delegation, of neglecting their duties as outlined in tbe PSGA Constitution, including discrimination against Senator Joe Duncan "by attempting to limit his participation in United Council." Among its other allegations, the request also listed compromising UW-Parkside's reputation, perpetuating a pattern of misconduct while attending United Council functions, and misappropriation of student fees. "We want accountability," said Stacy Solberg, fonner secretary of Young Conservatives, who presented the complaint. "It's Holding PSGA Accountable Student Gov't Under Investigation woman and would not allow for civil unions, regardless of sexual orientation. The amendment states, "Only a marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state. A legal status identical or substantially similar to tbat of marriage for unmarried individuals shall not be valid or recognized." The current wording of the Constitution allows for civil unions but makes homosexual marriage illegal. The Constitution states, "Under the laws of this state, marriage is a legal relationship between two equal persons, a husband and wife, who owe to each other mutual responsibility and support." The debate started by Appling explaining the necessity of marriage in society. She believes marriage provides society with stability and fonn. She <;!aimed that there bas been no evidence to show that homosexual marriage has ever been a nann in society. Appling said, "There is absolutely no research that shows that two women or two men bringing up children is necessary and good and appropriate for those children." Besides being detrimental to the upbringing of children, Appling believes that if the amendment isn't passed, the sanctity of marriage will be challenged. She cited cases of polygamy and incest as well as the marriage of minors in defense of her claim. Appling is concerned with the wording of the current constitution. She cited an instance where Rosie 0' Donnell called her female partner "her husband." [f the amendment passes, marriage will be limited to only one anatomic male and one anatomic female, not just anyone who claims to be husband and wife. Rep. Pocan defended his anti-DOMA viewpoints. He Story continued OIL page 6 BROWN MICHAEL BY PRESTON & NICHOLAS RAVNIKAR Filing a request for judicial review on April 22, the "Coalition of Fairness" accused PSGA members of breaching their duties and responsibilities by forgoing their voting rights at the most recent United Council General Assembly to instead attend a function sponsored by the Democratic party, among other allegations. The Coalition's complaint stated it was acting "on behalf of numerous clubs and organizations, and the student body as a whole." The docwnent filed by the Coalition accused Parkside Student Government Association (PSGA) President Chris Semenas and Vice not a Democrat or Conservative thing. We want to make sure we're being represented." However, Semenas said he believes that the accusations were politically motivated. "That's how the game of politics goes," he said. Immediately after the complaint was submitted, PSGA Senate proxy Molly Meyer made a motion to suspend PSGA's judicial branch because two of the justices, Joe Bergeron and Chief Justice Doug Sawyer, are affiliated with the Young Conservatives and College Democrats respectively. Starting with II people back in August, we set out to establish the newspaper as credible and well-respected source of information. As weeks passed and new issues came out, we found ourselves experimenting with different techniques in writing, designing, and marketing - with the priority of learning. Throughout the year, we acquired a staff of more than 30 students, which has certainly proven to be the most cohesive and effective team I have ever been a part of. Beyond that, the information the newspaper supplies the community is no longer fluffy, superficial content, but real, relevant news with hard facts and feature articles that the community genuinely cares about. On April 21, The Ranger News was awarded Student Organization of the Year, and on behalf of our entire staff, we are more than honored to serve our campus. On a personal note, I was grateful to be nominated for the Distinguished Student Leader of the Year award and (almost embarrassingly) flattered that I received it. The reason I felt a bit embarrassed was that I think it is a prestigious award, and I feel any student could have done what I did this year; it would just be a matter of doing it. Anyway, here are some fundamental points of what I believe it takes to be a great leader on campus, or anywhere for that matter: I • Start as a human, who knows he or she is human. • Consider yourself a leader who leads your own life. • Find something you are passionate about doing, and do it. • Be creative about your passion, always develop and invite new ideas, and implement them. • Don't be eager to talk, be eager to listen. (Or at least act like it.) • Be more thankful for critiques than compliments. • Use critiques to your advantage. • Act professional and friendly, but be true to yourself and what you do. • Discipline yourself to accommodate what you establish as priorities. • Show up everyday, be available, involved, and accountable for the responsibilities you take up. There are many advantages of attending a small college like UW-Parkside. Students can get to know their professors on a personal level, become part of any organization on campus, and enrich their characters in more ways than a bachelor's degree alone can do. Rather than having the attitude of "there is nothing to do on campus," I encourage all students to ask, "What can we create? What can we do? What can we make this campus?" We are the student body.
