As a result of this if a person wants to use a computer in the library or a computer lab, he or she must log into the computers using his or her UW-Parkside user name and. password. However, if an individual attempts to log into a computer in either the library or in a computer lab using his or her current password he or she will most likely not succeed. This is because in order to use a campus computer, one must have his or her password synchronized, which can be done on-campus at a workstation in the library, at a computer lab specifically designw-ed for this purpose, or by using any computer with access to the internet off campus. In order to synch your password from a computer off campus here is what you must do. Type hrtp.z/www.uwp.edu/go/ NetlDSynch in the address bar. . Next, enter your Uw-Parkside email usemame as well as your password. If your password meets the new criteria you should see a screen come up which will indicate that the process was • done correctly. 1£ your password does not meet the requirements it could be due to a number of things. Katherine Gregory left quite a legacy on campus. "She got me interested in things that affected the direction I'm taking both personally as a teacher, and as a researcher, and also with the department. It's a little tricky to explain that because when we hired Katherine we were very interested in her ability to teach hands-on media type stuff, and she surprised me in that she was doing more theoretical research with that kind of stuff, and we weren't really expecting that. We were really impressed with the kinds of video production she-had done ... and thought that would be a good addition to the department. But when sbe came, I got to know ber and discovered that she was writing a lot of scholarly articles about that kind of stuff. lOO, which kind of fueled my curiosity in some of that stuff. None of my own research has dealt with online stuff ... But because she was interested in doing more than just the production thai got me absolutely convinced that we needed more people to do the production part of stuff ... so I kind of gOI thinking about future positions that we would need and things we might be hopeful to get:' explained Mullen .. Gregory declined a request to be interviewed. • Katherine Gregory's decision to leave the UW- Parkside community has many wondering why she chose to leave after only five years. The communication department was affected by Gregory's departure in a number of ways. Students who previously had Gregory as an advisor now have to find a new advisor. Additionally, it created an opening within the department. which was filled with the hiring of Adrienne Viramontes. "She was doing some very valuable things in her classes and any other work that she did with . students. including the radio station," said Communications professor Megan Mullen. "Being part of the media faculty of the department, myself along now with one other person, Fay .Akindes, makes me feel like we're really short on people teaching media. I think the impact is going to be felt. I think students are going to feel it and I hope that as Chair [of the communication department] I'll be able to find a good long- term solution. Hopefully we'll do more of what she was doing [by getting] the department more connected with the student organizations that are producing media. This is kind of tragic, but I think: I will use this space to write a brief commentary about the events that occurred that day. I don't know what it was like standing on the street, watching the towers collapse, or sitting at home anxiously waiting to hear the fate of loved ones. I did know what it felt like to be confused, anxious, and scared. I was afraid mainly because I didn't know what was going on. All [ knew was that it was something bad. On 9-11 , I watched the first plane crash into the World Trade Center on a T.Y. during advisory (a.k.a, homeroom) in sophomore year in high school. At that time, they were speculating that it was just a tragic accident. Then the second plane hit, and I had to go to my next class. . For the rest of the day, I was in panic mode. What had just happened? What did this mean? I had so many questions, but at the beginning of each of my other classes, my teachers told me they could offer no answers. Many of them said things like, "We all know what's going on, but we need to continue learning." Again, I still had no clue what was going on, and it frustrated me that they assumed I knew. When my last class let out, I was relieved to find several special issues of The Kenosba News stacked in the commons. A huge headline on the fronl page read "ATIACKED!" Inside were at least a few answers to my many questions and an overview of . what had happened that morning. [ guess the moral of the story is that news is important. There are things people need to know. To make good decisions and sometimes to- even feel comforted, people need to be informed. I hope we, as a newspaper, never need to coyer another tragedy like 9- J I or even the Virginia Tech shootings. But, if the situation arises, we'll be there, letting you know what you need to know. Words and actions like these led Chancellor John Keating to address Upper-main Place last week Monday, April 23. After an introduction From Dayvin Hallmon, a UW-Parkside student and vice president of Rainbow Alliance, Keating took the podium. "This campus is an inclusive campus and will not tolerate anything that goes against that inclusiveness. The vandalization of your monster [... ] is again a reminder that we have not yet truly convinced the campus that everyone be highly respected no matter what their beliefs, what their orientations, what' their actions. Highly respected; that's what we need on every campus in this country, and we surely need ithere at UW-Parkside." The monster Keating referred to, which was vandalized itself, was the green closet monster. Silting outside the library, the' green monster was the Rainbow Alliance's response to the vandalization of material on campus. According to Hallman, theclosest monster "is the way of taking something that has been damaging and very. painful and trying to make it positive while at the same time calling attention to an issue that everyone should be aware of," After addressing the negative aspects of why he was speaking, Keating moved on to the positive, and discussed the Papers decorated with questions and student answers hung on, the windows of Upper Main Place, as UW-Parkside Chancellor John Keating. addresses students regarding issues of diversity and vandelism on campus. Student Dayviri Hallmon, who is vice president of Rainbow Alliance, provided the introduction to the event. falL" Keating went on to say that he has asked UW-Parkside Dean' of Students Steve McLaoghlin and professor Dean Yohnk to . work with students to figure out the process of putting a center together. Keating ending his speech with a call for a louder voice establishment of an LGST center (LGBT stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered). Keating said, "Today 1 am prepared to say that we will [work) towards establishing that center and will most likely see the appearance of that in this next from the LGBT community at UW-Parkside. Said Keating, "I want to congratulate you all for standing up for your rights. I want to hear all of you; every person on this campus is entitled to their beliefs." After the speech had ended, Hallmon later commented on the importance of having the chancellor address the crowd. "I think it's very nice anytime someone of this university in a position of power decides to step out. I think it makes a statement," said Hallmon. However, Hallmon went on to say that change in UW- Parksidc will take a lot more than a speech. "I also acknowledge that you must do something more than just give your word and give your presence; you must follow through with action, and particularly when it's a problem like this [.,.J, then you have to do more than just take action a couple months down the road. It has to be immediate and you have to be serious about it." Hallmon continued by questioning how many UW- Parkside staff members were serious about working on the issue of LGBT equality in the university. "How many professors, people with P,H.D:s, do we have .working on that at this university? Not very many, and of the ones that have said, 'Yes. I'll do it: - which you can count them on your hand and still have fingers left over - how many of them are really able to dedicate the time to it?" Hallmon asked. Hallman reiterated, "There's other things that also need to be addressed and taken into this equation if we proclaim to believe in diversity," Hallmon summed up that support for the LGBT community lies not in words alone. Said' Hallman, "I have students hurling the word fag in my direction at least two or three times a week. And if I'm out there taking the oppression and you say you support me, then you are asking to be out there taking it too." Sign damaged on campus ANDREW C. WESTBROOK westb002@uwp.edu The sign marking the entrance to the Communication Arts building's parking lot was naillaged April 2 L according to Parkside Police officer Danny Gavahan, who noticed the damage around 2:45 a.rn, that Saturday. Gavahan believes that a truck backed into the sign and drove off, based on tire tracks found, as well as a mud flap from a Ford Ranger. Gavahan found paint chips on the sian that he said were either dark o CCRV bill call-in day on campus grey or olive green, depending on who was looking at them. •Gavahan encourages students to tell Parkside Police if they have any other information about the incident. Replacing the sign will cost $2,791, according to Gavahan, He said that insurance would cover the cost but that that would raise the university's premiums, which would ultimately affect students financially as well. The bill stipulates that hospitals do the following for a sexual assault victim: "provide / her with medically and factually accurate and unbiased written and oral information about emergency contraception and its use and efficacy"; "orally inform her of her option to receive emergency contraception, her option to report tlie sexual assault to a law enforcement agency. and any available options for her to receive an examination to gather evidence regarding the sexual assault"; and "immediately provide emergency contraception to her upon her request." It has taken me two years to get to this point, and I look forward to all the things I plan to accomplish during my last year at UW-Parkside. The best place to start is right here, in print With the help of the executive staff this semester, 1 have come up with a list of goals for the upcoming months. Some of these include organizational things like updating our staff handbook and selling ad space over the summer. Other goals are recruiting new people to our staff to fill the positions left open by graduating seniors and expanding our membership. However, my goals for the newspaper are not all about The Ranger News as an organization. Next semester, we will • try to reach out more to the UW-Parkside community by offering more educational workshops and working closely with other media-related-groups like campus radio station WIPZ and local publications such as The Kenosha News 'V'd The Racine Journal Times. We will also continue one of the movements we started this semester: establishing a journalism program on campus. In the past few weeks, we have recruited and hired several new staff members who deserve recognition. Three of our newest reporters are Joy Christie, Rachel Baker, and Michael Maxwell. One of our current reporters, Bob Rosati, is moving up to the position of News Page editor. In addition, we've hired two new executive board members. ] look forward to workiug with Adam Stark, our new ad manager, and Jeffrey Scotese, our new business manager. WESTBROOK westbOO2@uwp.edu The shootings at Virginia Tech on April 16 left ripples that were felt by every school in the country, UW-Parkside included. The day following the tragedy, John Keating, chancellor of Uw-Parkside, sent out an e- mail to all students enrolled at UW-Parkside, which, in part, expressed sympathy toward the Virginia Tecb campus on behalf ofUW-Parkside. "I want to assure the campus community that we are very cognizant of the fact that any' University is vulnerable to such horror because of the very nature of a University as an open and welcoming institution. UW- Parkside is no exception," the e-mail stated, in part, and went on to emphasize that Parkside Police officers are very well trained in such matters and that administration also participates in table-top scenarios of campus disasters. Michael Marzion, chief of Parkside Police said he met with all of the UW-Sysrem chiefs by teleconference on Tuesday, April 17, and discussed their crisis response plans, assessing both their strengths and weaknesses. He also said that further meetings with students, faculty. and staff Of UW-Parkside would be held LO further address such issues. Marzion said that, altbough no more officers were being hired presently, the coverage by the current officers was exempJary. "1 have three officers on from 1:00 in the afternoon to 5:00 at night, and then Ihave three officers on from 9:00 at night to 1:00 in the morning, and those are the times when we have the highest level of calls," Marzion said. He went on that three officers on duty at once is a sufficient number for this university. Marzion reiterated the chancellor's statement, saying that he and those in the chancellor's cabinet practice the crisis response plan annually through table- top exercises involving various scenarios. Marzion said that there would be a scenario presented to the group "and we spend hours talking about how we would respond, what resources we would direct. how the university would handle the siruation," he said, "so we're pretty well-versed as a university on how to apply OUf crisis response plan, and I think that we' d gel some measured outcomes or some consistent outcomes if we implemented that plan." Parkside Police are already given active-shooting training, which concerns what to do with a shooter on campus or in the dorms, according to Manion, and they will be doing additional .training soon with the Kenosha SWAT team. UW-Parkside's Crisis Response Plan can be located on the university's Web site by using the "Campus Safety" link on the home page and, subsequently, the "Safety Department" link on the Parkside Police and Public Safely page. The plan's purpose is "to provide University of Wisconsin- Parkside (UWP) administrators with procedures to follow in the event of a crisis situation," according to the site. I' ve read over the various articles regarding what happened and why. Some Pl'ople bl~e loose gun laws, some movies. Some will say there was a mental imbalance or genetic ~' predisposition. Others will assume ;my number of motives held in the mind of - the killer that brought him to action. I guess the unsettling part of all of it is that there are so many reasons Or factors . involved. It's hard to Point to one element and say, if this had been done or not done, the incident could have been averted. That inability to find and strike the root of a situation can be unnerving to say the least. I extend my sympathies to all who were hurt by the deaths at Virginia Tech and the incident as a whole. I commend __ "'-' those who have begun efforts 10 help victims or who have just taken time to acknowledge the loss of life, and I hope we don't have to repeat the process. I would say more, but I really don't know how much more there is to say. I don't know where to point fingers. and I don't know what preventative advice to give. except to say that things like this are happening, and we need to pay attention. The candidates will be up for election by the U'W-Parkside student body on Wednesday, April 18, Thursday, April 19, from 9:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. to 5,00 p.m., respectively. Polls wilJ be open near Java Coast in upper Molinaro Hall. In a format that was more question-and-answer than debate, PSGA presidential candidates Anthony Dubose, Henry D: . Gaskins, and Donald Weber, fielded questions from students, which were read by moderator Michael Scerpella. One of the initial questions asked had to do with uw- Parkside's involvement with the United Council ofUW Students, to which UW-Parkside studeots currently pay $4 each, per year. All three candidates favored staying with United Council. Gaskins said that, with students paying $20,000 per year to UC, the council should be listening to what students at UW-Parkside have to say. Weber said that ~tis important to get more IOformation about ue to the student body as a whole. The candidates were then asked about their opinions of the new constitution recently passed by the PSGA senate-and set to Parkside Student Government Association presidential candidates Henry D. Gaskins, Anthony Dubose and-Donald Weber answer questions from members of the crowd as part of. the . presidential debate on Wednesday, April II, in mid Main Place. PSGA Elections Director Michael ScerpeUa acted as moderator for the event. be put on the ballot during the elections on April 18 and 19. Gaskins thanked PSGA Senator David Wilson for drafting the constitution. Weber said that he will follow the new constitution to the nth degree. Dubose stressed making sure that the next PSGA chief justice has a good concept of how the new constitution works. . In regards to how they could cut the budget, the candidates offered varied answers. Gaskins claimed that much of the activities of PSGA could be accomplished with much less money. Dubose.defended the current setup, saying that theirs is the lowest-paid executive board in the UW System. Dubose pointed out that every other major-status organization pays stipends to members of its staff, as well. He stressed that organizations should work and collaborate more on programs as a way of reducing tension with the budget; he then encouraged organizations to look at their programming to see which programs have not been successful. Dubose also advocated getting a freeze on tuition. Weber favored unilateral cuts on this issue. "If we need to make a 5- percent cut, we need to make a 5-percent cut across the board," said Weber. All the candidates agreed that there was a need to reach out to get students more involved. Dubose said he will work to reach out to students and spoke of bringing more students to Washington D.C. with PSGA when they travel there. Weber said that students need to be more involved in how their segregated fees are being spent. Gaskins pointed out a concern of students graduating in May not being prepared well enough for the world beyond college and encouraged more students to get involved with organizations such as WlPZ 88.5 and The Ranger News. The candidates touched on other issues important to them. Dubose said that there were many issues currently not being heard on campus. Gaskins emphasized the need for PSGA to get out to students and said that in recent years, PSGA has not gotten out to students and thus has left them unaware of what PSGA is. Weber. talked about the problem of visibility at UW-Parkside, noting that the campus is in "the middle of nowhere" and is still mostly unknown. Weber also talked about a need to sit down with student organizations and faculty, regarding these suhjects. It's also. week in which I'm reminded of the power and responsibility of a.journalist. There are a lot of journalistic creeds and philosophies, and there are various summations of what journalism is and what function it serves. However, the core of journalism is informing the reader; that's about as basic as it gets. And, with promotion on campus limited to posters, a relatively underattended debate, and some Facebook groups, a campus newspaper that prints 2,000 issues per week can make a significant difference when it informs readers. THINGS TO DO -Andrew C. Westbrook Editor-in-chief As I sat writing the recap of the debates (refer to the front page), I stressed myself out trying to make sure that the writ~ up was bias-free, balanced, and accurate. People tell me sometimes that we spend too much time covering student government, and I suppose there were times when -' thought, III retrospect, that I had been a bit excessive, but covering government and keeping readers informed of its actions is one of the basic tenets of journalism. . . .... The power of journalism is inherent 10 us Wide influence; I think this is part of the allure to some who enter into the field, the power to influence government and the masses. But, with the power of influence comes the need to be responsible in applying it (kind of like Spidennan). It's a broader lesson, as well, as all of our actions impact other people. The responsibility is present in all aspects of journalism, from the accuracy and content of the quotes to the need of a reporter to eliminate any biases of his or her own, both conscious and unconsciou . The responsibility is to keep our readers as informed as we can, to work in their best interest. This is the goal toward which we strive. I was thinking of finishing this letter with some self- deprecating joke about the best interest of the reader being served by me ending this letter or something like that, but I dunk I've just about driven that joke into the ground, so I'll acquiesce to the responsibility of not boring the reader with more lame jokes. UWPAC124 Ranger News Text Any textual data included in the document One of the ways Jonathan Shailor, associate professor . of Communications, will be celebrating his 50'" birthday is by running 26.2 miles on April 16 in the Boston Marathon for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. It will be a kind of homecoming for the Boston native and the realization of a dream for the man who has already run seven marathons, including Chicago and New York, since 1997. "There's a whole kind of aura about the Boston Marathon, it's the longest continually running, no pun intended, marathon in the world," he said. Shailor started runni-ng in 1976. '1 started running after Isaw Rocky;' he said, "I was a college student, and I got psyched. It was a running craze, and 1 got into it." .It . would not be until the early 1990s, when Shailor met his wife, that he even considered marathons. He said. "We~ve done most of our training together:' Shailor would not have been able to run the Boston Marathon officially if not running for charity. His best marathon time of four hours, 14 minutes, and 1-------------------'--------,------------------1 29 seconds (sub-ten-minute miles) is nearly an hour off the required time to officially run the marathon. Running for Dana Farber is a "point of pride" for Shailcr who had set a goal earlier of raising $5,000 but raised it to $10,000 after meeting the initial mark. Accordingto Shailor, "Running for charity is something that became much bigger and something I'm much more invested in than I thought I would be." Shailor even recruited- a student, Paul J. Glysz, to help. In class, Shailor recognized Glysz as "a student who was obviously good at organizing." Glysz interviewed runners chosen by Dana Farber and organized a benefit event for. the Dana Farber Marathon Challenge held March 31. WESTBROOK westb002@uwp.edu parkside Student Govenunent Association was unable to pass its constitution through the senate in its meeting on Friday, April 6, two weeks beforeit is supposed to be put on theballotduring PSGA elections April18and 19. After two special meeti ngs and time during regular PSGA meetings spentontheconstitution, the senate voted on the document as a whole, after a few final words,on April 6. The initial vote was 18 yeas, two nays, and fourabstentions. It was pointed outafter that that the document required two-thirds approval fromthe senate to pass. The full quorum of the PSGA senate is 34, so a vote of 23 yeas would have been required to approve the constitution; however; only 24.members were in attendance. A second vote was then taken, whi.sh..w&!l,1t!l!!jnL ... ~vwt!i;!!""_ 16-4-4,and the senate tabled the constitution until the next.regular meeting, Friday, April 13. At the conclusion of the meeting, PSGA President Tyson Fettes overrode the senate's decision to tablethe constitution and instead called an emergency meeting forWednesday, April 11, at ~:OO p.m., based on a suggestion by President Pro-tempore Brian Graziano. Fettes said that if the constitution fails on the Friday before elections,' it would be problematic. After constitution talk ceased, the senate moved on to discuss, andeventually pass, three newresolutions being presented. The first resolution «Resolution in Support of C~mpassionate Care of Rape Victims Bill (LRB-1387/3)," was presented by Senator Emily Junion, and sponsored by her and the PSGA Women's Issues Committee and Was CO-sponsored by Senator Michelle Slabik. Dancing was a major aspect of the celebration that took place from noon to 1 p.m., as a variety of performers took part in the multicultural event . Spring Fest 2007 TINA STRAUSS Slrau012@uwp,edu SUFAC gave the council $4,006 to use for UW-Parkside's 80 student organizations as they saw fit. Tyson Fettes, president of Parkside Student Government Association and member of the Presidents' Council said every organization was invited to participate in the planning process. Members of the Presidents' Council decided to host Spring Fest as a way to make campus organizations more visible to students, as well as encourage students to get involved. All organizations are encouraged to contribute to the event in various ways. Other possible events included a homecoming game, block party, and multi-cultural- themed event. It was also suggested that. the Presidents' Council split the money evenly between student organizations. Fettes explained that this idea was rejected because each organization would only receive $50.00. He said that Spring Fest woold be "a place for people to gather" and interact with organizations, making it the best option. Fettes also said that, although the Presidents' Council is looking forward to Spring Fest, they did not ask for any money from SUFAC for next year. Gladiators, dancing beads, and free food are among the many activities planned for Spring Fest's main event, Thursday, April 19, in Mid-Main Place. A dodge ball tournament on Friday, April20;will complete the Spring Fest activities. The event will be hosted by the Presidents' Council with money allotted to them by SUFAC last year. I couldn't wait for classes to be done and I could walk at graduation, a semester later than I originally intended. When I started college, it was about a year after ~nearly bombed out of high school. I went to the University of Wisconsin- Waukesha for 2 years before transferring to Parkside in the fan of '04. When I started college, I pretty much went to class, went to work, and went home, just like most people. After my first semester at Parkside, 1joined The Ranger News as a copy editor, When [ graduate, I'll have spent two and a half years at The Ranger News, and I can say that I think I've gained more than I've lost by doing It. I know registration is at hand, and I want to encourage students to leave room in their schedules for something, something to get themselves involved on campus. Last week. after we all thought spring ~d warmer we~ther were upon us, we saw snowflakes sweeping across our windows and realized that we'd spoke too soon, Granted, it wasn't much, but the POlOt was sttl! made. It seemed fitting to me, though, that the dramatic change 10 weather coincided so well with the start of registration. Picking classes and planning a schedule are times in which we may think we know what we're getting into and what we can expect and then see in retrospect that w 7 wOul.d rather have done sO~!h!ng else. I thought about 4 or 5 different potential majors before eventually pIcking English. and I'm starting to think tbat J would have liked at least I or 2 of the IIItl:nlativea ~ than the one I picked. I think dlat a lot of people come to school and think they know exacdy what path they want to follow in their time here. They know what they want to major in, and they know that they want to spend no more time on campus than the few hours of class they have each day and the time it takes to walk to their cars and back. I think that if I hadn't joined The Ranger Nevis, I might have loobd back thought that I missed something in my time at Parkside. So, I just want to encourage people to think and rethink about their schedules as they plan their classes for next year. . I have three more letters from the editor, and I'm really gone to try to make one of them fun to read. but if you've become sick of me giving advice, I'll be easing myself into retirement soon enough. -Andrew C. The individual who downloaded the pornography was not apprehended while he or she was downloading the material. The Instructional Program Manager for Computing Support Services, Christopher Robaidek, explained how the pornography was first discovered on a computer. "A student employee of ours was on i'Tunes ... and on iTunes, you can see if anyone else in the area is sharing stuff from another . network, and he just peeked at what they were doing and there were files that were suspected of possibly being pornography." CSS called Parks ide Police to report the files that were suspected of being pornography. Officers James Heller and Jared Glaze responded to the call. They said that there were two video files that were downloaded. One of the files had adults who were fully dressed; however it stopped "after 20 seconds." The officers could not access the other file that was downloaded, but they did say the video file was about nine seconds long. This was not the first time that pornography was downloaded on campus computers. "We find it on the computers after ,they leave," said Robaidek. Officers Heller and Glaze recalled years ago that child pornography was found in a computer lab. Career Connection offers students view into business world from the companies. Roughly 300 of you signed the petition there in support of getting a concentration or certificate in journalism, with the eventual intent of the endeavor to establish a full-fledged journalism program on campus. For a while now, we've been ralking about how beneficial it would be to have a journalism major. It wasn't until a couple of weeks ago that the idea really got off the ground, mainly because of the drive and ambition of our graphic design manager, Soohyun Kim, and gained further momentum due to our executive editor and advertising manager, Kaitlyn Ulmer and Tina Strauss, respectively. The positive effects to The Ranger News are pretty obvious, including the additional journalistic training provided to students working for us, as well as the projected jump in the influx of our staff on a yearly basis. But, more than that, it would add another facet to the university as a whole. UW-Parkside is one of only two of the UW-System's 4- year schools devoid of journalism, and UW-Parkside seems like a better candidate than most to have such a program instituted. Parkside is supposed to serve the counties of Kenosha, Racine, and Walworth, hundreds of thousands of people, and we don't offer them an outlet to the journalistic field. That means that students in the area who want to pursue journalism are going to be going somewhere else. Parkside also sits balfway between Milwaukee and Chicago, two major metropolitan areas that boast heavity circutated newspapers. With the rise of on-line newspapers coupled with printed dailies, as well as magazines. television, and radio, the need for journalistic expertise continues to escalate. I understand that there are obstacles to creating entirely new programs at a university. but 1 think this a program the university needs, and I think it's time to make journalism a larger part of the university. The Ranger News will continue to work toward this goal, and any support we get will be appreciated. I know that at least a few bundred of you agreed with what we were saying. and that was just in 8 hours over two days. Maybe some will see this as simply a means for us to get more staff members, but I think more people understand the necessity for this development and will support I]S in its realization. Division ill institutions tend to focus more on academics with less emphasis on athletics; however, they attract attention through athletics because people enjoy watching athJetes play for the love of the game without scholarships and UW-Parkside has recently been chosen for a pilot study focused on raising the awareriess of Division II universities. The goal is for Division II schools, like UW-Parkside, to find their place among Division Tand III schools. Because Division [ schools money motivating them. Campus Crusaders for Christ sponsored Leahy's appearance. Pornography is more accessible to individuals today While most people who purchase pornography ~ay think that by doing so it IS harmless, in reality, it can possibly lead to very serious consequences. One individual who knows this all too well is than ever before. There are numerous ways that people can view pornography if they wish to do so, like browsing the lnternet or going to adult bookstores to purchase adult videos and adult magazines. The United States spends $57 billion a year on pornography. so it should not be surprising that the U.S. is the largest consumer of pornography in the world. Additionally, the United States is the largest exporter and producer of pornography in the world. Leahy started his lecture by stating some statistics. Adult bookstores outnumber McDonalds by a 2-to-l ratio. On the Internet, there are 40 million Web sites that have pornography on them. He said that it was brought up by another member of SUFAC in a previous meeting that after the donation by Darshan Dhaliwal, it would be a slap in the face to cut Parkside International Club's hudget. Kirleis went on to say that there were severaJ reasons that PIC was not cut, while other organizations were. He said that all the money going to PIC would be going back to the campus; whereas, events held by Sacred Circle are done more in the community than on campus. "Patty Jensen worked very very hard to get people to the powwow," Kirleis said, but he continued that the event was underattended. Kirleis said also that the reasons for the difference in allocations included the large segment of international students on campus and the desire LO retain them on the Uw-Parkstde campus. In regard to the budget allocations as a whole, Kirleis said that he thought the SUFAC committee did a good job and that when you are dealing with budgets, a lot of people will be unhappy. Fettes said that despite the controversy over the budget presented at the meeting, organizations are still funded very well right now. Said Fettes, "We can make it work." The senate then decided to vote on the budget as it was. After a roll-call vole was taken, the budget for 2007-2008 was passed ind will be sent to the chancellor. The vote tally was 20 for. 7 against, and 5 abstentions. The only proposal discussed at the meeting was the Resolution Supporting an LGBTQA Center, sponsored by senator David Wilson. According to Wilson, the new center would potentially be in the bookstore in the new Union building on campus. However, according to Stephanie Sirovatka Marshall, advisor to PSGA, there is no confirmation of this yet. Continue To Page 4 The 2007-2008 budget dominated Parkside Student Government Association's latest meeting Friday, Feb. 23. After two rounds of budget cuts, PSGA's Segregated University Fees Allocation Committee presented the final draft of the budget to he sent to Chancellor John Keating pending approval by the PSGA Senate. . Much of the controversy focused on the cuts to Sacred Circle and Parkside Adult Student Alliance, who were allotted $12,000 and $15,000, respectively. Senator Andrew Scheeler questioned why those two organizations received so much less than other "minority organizations," such as Black Student Union and Latinos Unidos, who were listed to receive $24,800 and $20,500, respectively. Louie Kirleis, director of SUFAC, juxtaposed the number of people he saw attending BSU meetings and the number he saw attending Sacred Circle meetings and said that that was part of the reason for the disparity in dollar :- --1 amounts. Kirleis said that A BSU meeting might fill a lecture hall, while he saw only a few people when attending a meeting for Sacred Circle. Senator Carly Anne Surber argued that to provide the additional funds would only mean adding another $20-30 per student. According to PSGA President Tyson Fetttes, segregated fees next year per student will be $939.94. Further controversy insued as Senator Ted Lucier claimed that Kirleis made a remark during the SUFAC meeting earlier on Feb. 23 in regard to Sacred Circle that Lucier called biased and racist. It seems like every week, I plan to get things done earlier in the week and have everything ready to go on Sunday so that we can get done before Monday morning hits us. Because it's almost 10:30 Sunday night, I'm pretty sure I failed in that task yet again. I think it's a pretty fair assessment to say that I'm a procrastinator. When-I'm working on the paper during the week, I always figure that everything can be put off until Friday and then Saturday and then Sunday. By then, the desire of my brain is sort of a.mix between wishing I had been more industrious during the week and the desire to go to bed. When the issue comes out on Tuesday, I notice <tilthe things I wish I would have done better, and I see where I could have spent all the extra time I wasted on Facebook (and now MySpace) over the course of the week. 1 tbink the problem that I have, both in The Ranger News and in my life in general, is not seeing the broader picture .. When I'm working on the issue, I may spend too little time on things that I'll later agonize over, and I'll obsess over some potentially controversial element of the publication that 1 look back on and wonder what I was thinking to 1 worry about it so much. It's something that I think applies to the newspaper as a whole. I remember being at our last newspaper conference, and one of the presenters was talking about the design of the newspaper. He talked about how each of us probably sees each story and each photo and each division separately, but it's important to look at the whole thing, because when the reader picks up the issue, he or she sees the entire thing at once. It may seem pretty obvious to some people, but I really didn't think about the big picture of things as much before I worked for The Ranger News. It's one of the more important skins I think I've gained here, looking outside of what's going on Sunday night, people getting stressed out and the little controversies that might arise from any given piece, and seeing the entirety of what we're doing, seeing that no matter what, the issue will still come out on Tuesday. And, once that happens, all it means is that it's time to start working on the next one. I was going to write more, but I think I'll leave you here. Modine gave UW- Parkside students the puzzling question of how to better compete for business in the "military vehicle market. .Answering this que-stion entailed a semester's worth of intense research and analy.sis. The other .student presenter was Patrick Liesch. 'His Power Point had interesting pictures of meteor samples from Mars. He had funding from NASA to do research on those rocks. The Regents asked bim if he would be doing this kind of research as his career choice. Liesch replied, "No, I want to go in the field of entomology. I would eventually like to study insects." This an.swer surprised them. One Regent replied- that he was sure Liesch would be successful given the research he presented that day. UW-Parkside was not by any means the only business the Regents heard and approved. Other schools in the UW-System were given attention as well. Because the.Education Committee did not have enough time to cover aIJ of its business, UW-Parkside's presentation on the Diversity Scorecard was tabled until its next meeting. WESTBROOK westbOO2@uwp.edu Parkside Student Government Association had its first regular meeting in two weeks on March 9, after several members returned from a conference in Washington, D.C. At the operring of the meeting, several members of PSG A, including president Tyson Fettes and Vice- president 'Anthony Dubose, talked about what they brought back from the trip. Dubose said that one of the things he saw at the conference was that many other schools' student governments do more things outside of the school, not just voting on the' budget. Dubose' suggestion that PSGA should start doing more such things 'and not spending so mucb time dealing. with issues Irke the budget received applause from many of those in attendance. Senator early-Anne Surber questioned how those who went would be spreading what they learned to the rest of the student body. Fettes said that he and PSGA President Pro- Tempore Brian Graziano had already been talking about programs that they could put on and said that they may be doing one in the near future aimed at teaching students how to lobby. The majority of the meeting focused on a. new resolution, sponsored by Carly-Anne Surber, entitled "Resolution in Support of Creating an Inclusive Student Government." The pieceoflegislation stated, "BE IT RESOLVED that this student government will take the first step by renaming Women's, Issues Director to the Director of Gender and Sexuality." The resolution was created in regard "to the recent presidential vetoes against the addition of LGBT Issues Director, due to opposition of an expanded executive board," as stated in the document. Part of the argument is that "the Diversity Director should not be over-extended to cover all issues .of race, ethnicity, culture, and religion along with issues of sexual/gender orientation/identity, but should instead be able to work on promoting people of color," as stated in the resolution. Surber said that it would be easiest to expand the Women's Issues director position to include these issues, as opposed to other current director positions. Senator Dayvin Halmon' asked whether this renamed director would also deal with men's issues. Surber said that he or she would. Emily Juniou, PSGA's current Women's Issues director, said that she could see a problem with losing the separation that Women's Issues currently has. Questions were also raised about whether the name is too broad, as was argued to be the case with the title of Diversity Director in previous meetings. Surber said that the change would make issues of gender. and sexuality more visibly inclusive. "If it's a need, let's make it a visible need," she said. It's the time. of the year when I realize that the semester is halfway over and I haven't finished anywhere near half of my academic work. And, because of the break. some of our stories are a bit dated; however, there were some things that I saw in our paper when I got back that were welcome surprises. We had 100 Words (MORE OR LESS) submissions and multiple editorials about things that had happened in OUI previous issues and current happenings on campus. l've talked about this before, but I don't remember exactly what I said. so to me it still seems topical. One of the functions of our newspaper is to serve as a public forum, a place to debate issues and for people-to react to what they read and observe. I don't mean to say that a paper's editorial section is just a deposit box for rants: rather, it provides a medium for intelligent discourse between people. I have been aware for a while that our paper had been lacking in editorials, but I really began to appreciate our need for them on my way back from Florida last Thursday. I picked up a copy of The Atlanta Journal Constitution on my way through Georgia. I was reading the opinion section of said paper and the editorials therein. What I read were editorials based on facts and structured in the form of solid arguments. Over time, I've' learned to have greater appreciation for editorials, not for the aspects of outlandish claims and sensationalized quotes, but for the expression of ideas. the debate between people, and solutions proposed for the problems the news section brings to light. I don't consider any part of a newspaper to be more important than the actual, hard news, but strong editorials can give a newspaper a personal quality and make it more interactive and lively. Any newspaper is made up of multiple facets, and the whole requires a balance in order to be successful. Editorials can add another dimension to this whole, and create an exchange of ideas and feedback. Brian Graziano, the President Pro Tempore of Parkside Student Government Association started the address. He said..that PSGA is happy with how active the student government is and how it listens to the students. He said that student government is doing all it can in regards to the interest of the students. The senat6rs may not agree with each other on certain issues. but they all agree on improving the educational experience of all UW-Parkside students, he said. From there he turned the floor over to Vice Chancellor of Student Services -and Dean of Students Dr. Stephen Mcl.aughlin. McLangWin's main point of emphasis Wason the OW System Board of Regents, which will be meeting at Uw-Parkside on March 8-9. The Board of Regents consists of three committees (Business and Finance, Education, and 'Physical Planning) in which 17 members participate. The schedule of events can be found on the UW-Par'kSide Web site. He encourages all students.to take part in this. The Board of Regents only makes its stop at UW- Parkside about once every decade. In addition to the Board of Regents, McLaugWin said that about an additional 100 people will be on campus during this time. He made the point to be patient with parking. Students should come earlier to find a parking spot on March 8 and 9. McLaugWin also advertised the ceremonial ground breaking of the new Student Union, which will be held on the north side of the Union at4:40 p.m. on March 8. If everything goes according to plan, the $100 million project should be completed by the fall of 2009. In - addition to the new union, the roads and parking lots will also be going under renovation. McLaughlin also mentioned the $40 million expansion of the Communication Arts building. From here he "Stop the violence. Break. the silence." The chanting could be heard from the Union Cafeteria as the marchers Circled the room, grabbing attention from anyone buying or eating food inside. After the cafeteria, Rainbow Alliance moved on to Union Bridge, through Molinaro Hall, and up to the Library, when the chanting suddenly stopped. As.Dr. Stephen McLaughlin, UW-Parkside dean of students, addressed Main Place during' the Slate of the School address, the marchers quietly fanned two rainbow- colored columns on each side of the seats. Standing quietly and calmly, they displayed their signs, waiting for their voices to be heard. Before marching through campus, forcing students to hear their chants and read their signs. the supporters of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) community gathered in Union Hall. Actually, I started by watcbing the procession of marchers Walking from the Union chanting with signs in bang. I watched two of our reporters listening intently and recording the events. [watched two more members of our staff circling the scene and taking pictures. What I thought at that moment was how proud I was of our. staff. It's one of the images that comes into my head when I think of journalism: The event breaks, and everyone jumps into action. Division ill institutions tend to focus more on academics with less emphasis on athletics; however, they attract attention through athletics because people enjoy watching athJetes play for the love of the game without scholarships and UW-Parkside has recently been chosen for a pilot study focused on raising the awareriess of Division II universities. The goal is for Division II schools, like UW-Parkside, to find their place among Division Tand III schools. Because Division [ schools money motivating them. Campus Crusaders for Christ sponsored Leahy's appearance. Pornography is more accessible to individuals today While most people who purchase pornography ~ay think that by doing so it IS harmless, in reality, it can possibly lead to very serious consequences. One individual who knows this all too well is than ever before. There are numerous ways that people can view pornography if they wish to do so, like browsing the lnternet or going to adult bookstores to purchase adult videos and adult magazines. The United States spends $57 billion a year on pornography. so it should not be surprising that the U.S. is the largest consumer of pornography in the world. Additionally, the United States is the largest exporter and producer of pornography in the world. Leahy started his lecture by stating some statistics. Adult bookstores outnumber McDonalds by a 2-to-l ratio. On the Internet, there are 40 million Web sites that have pornography on them. He said that it was brought up by another member of SUFAC in a previous meeting that after the donation by Darshan Dhaliwal, it would be a slap in the face to cut Parkside International Club's hudget. Kirleis went on to say that there were severaJ reasons that PIC was not cut, while other organizations were. He said that all the money going to PIC would be going back to the campus; whereas, events held by Sacred Circle are done more in the community than on campus. "Patty Jensen worked very very hard to get people to the powwow," Kirleis said, but he continued that the event was underattended. Kirleis said also that the reasons for the difference in allocations included the large segment of international students on campus and the desire LO retain them on the Uw-Parkstde campus. In regard to the budget allocations as a whole, Kirleis said that he thought the SUFAC committee did a good job and that when you are dealing with budgets, a lot of people will be unhappy. Fettes said that despite the controversy over the budget presented at the meeting, organizations are still funded very well right now. Said Fettes, "We can make it work." The senate then decided to vote on the budget as it was. After a roll-call vole was taken, the budget for 2007-2008 was passed ind will be sent to the chancellor. The vote tally was 20 for. 7 against, and 5 abstentions. The only proposal discussed at the meeting was the Resolution Supporting an LGBTQA Center, sponsored by senator David Wilson. According to Wilson, the new center would potentially be in the bookstore in the new Union building on campus. However, according to Stephanie Sirovatka Marshall, advisor to PSGA, there is no confirmation of this yet. Continue To Page 4 The 2007-2008 budget dominated Parkside Student Government Association's latest meeting Friday, Feb. 23. After two rounds of budget cuts, PSGA's Segregated University Fees Allocation Committee presented the final draft of the budget to he sent to Chancellor John Keating pending approval by the PSGA Senate. . Much of the controversy focused on the cuts to Sacred Circle and Parkside Adult Student Alliance, who were allotted $12,000 and $15,000, respectively. Senator Andrew Scheeler questioned why those two organizations received so much less than other "minority organizations," such as Black Student Union and Latinos Unidos, who were listed to receive $24,800 and $20,500, respectively. Louie Kirleis, director of SUFAC, juxtaposed the number of people he saw attending BSU meetings and the number he saw attending Sacred Circle meetings and said that that was part of the reason for the disparity in dollar :- --1 amounts. Kirleis said that A BSU meeting might fill a lecture hall, while he saw only a few people when attending a meeting for Sacred Circle. Dev Vaughn. senate representative for PASA, said that PAS A helps all non- traditional students no campus. whether they are involved with PASA or not, and that they should the number of people at their meetings should not be such a heavily weighted factor. Senator Carly Anne Surber argued that to provide the additional funds would only mean adding another $20-30 per student. According to PSGA President Tyson Fetttes, segregated fees next year per student will be $939.94. Further controversy insued as Senator Ted Lucier claimed that Kirleis made a remark during the SUFAC meeting earlier on Feb. 23 in regard to Sacred Circle that Lucier called biased and racist. It seems like every week, I plan to get things done earlier in the week and have everything ready to go on Sunday so that we can get done before Monday morning hits us. Because it's almost 10:30 Sunday night, I'm pretty sure I failed in that task yet again. I think it's a pretty fair assessment to say that I'm a procrastinator. When-I'm working on the paper during the week, I always figure that everything can be put off until Friday and then Saturday and then Sunday. By then, the desire of my brain is sort of a.mix between wishing I had been more industrious during the week and the desire to go to bed. When the issue comes out on Tuesday, I notice <tilthe things I wish I would have done better, and I see where I could have spent all the extra time I wasted on Facebook (and now MySpace) over the course of the week. 1 tbink the problem that I have, both in The Ranger News and in my life in general, is not seeing the broader picture .. When I'm working on the issue, I may spend too little time on things that I'll later agonize over, and I'll obsess over some potentially controversial element of the publication that 1 look back on and wonder what I was thinking to 1 worry about it so much. It's something that I think applies to the newspaper as a whole. I remember being at our last newspaper conference, and one of the presenters was talking about the design of the newspaper. He talked about how each of us probably sees each story and each photo and each division separately, but it's important to look at the whole thing, because when the reader picks up the issue, he or she sees the entire thing at once. It may seem pretty obvious to some people, but I really didn't think about the big picture of things as much before I worked for The Ranger News. It's one of the more important skins I think I've gained here, looking outside of what's going on Sunday night, people getting stressed out and the little controversies that might arise from any given piece, and seeing the entirety of what we're doing, seeing that no matter what, the issue will still come out on Tuesday. And, once that happens, all it means is that it's time to start working on the next one. I was going to write more, but I think I'll leave you here.
