With that inmind, it should come as no Surprise that the UW-Parkside campus proudly hosted a Diwali Festival celebration on Friday, Nov.16. The ceremony began with an introduction from president of theUW-Parkside International Club, Adtnu Tiwari, and his • fellow host, Rattandeep Kaur, whoexplained to the audience thatDiwaJi is the Hindu festival of lights. Following the introduction, a lyrical prayer was sung by Saurnya Bojja, with the help of Anita Zachariah, in Hindi, the native language of India. The first dance was preformed by Saumya Bojja, Anita Zachariah, Ourlee Ouran, and Phoua Xiong. The style of dance is known as Indian fusion, which took parts of classic Indian traditional dance and mixed them with modern, somewhat Western, dance moves. The performers wore matching red saris and they twirled in unison to the up-tempo Indian music. Following the first performance was a dinner, of flavorful,.colorful Indian cuisine, including butter chicken, rajma rice, kheer, naan and salad, courtesy of Aramark catering. Parks ide International Club member Velimir Genov said, "it was really good," even though dishes like that might not have been as common in his native Bulgaria. After the meal was over Adtnu Tiwari said to the, audience, "I think the food was brilliant, wasn't it?" Tiwari and Kaur went on to introduce the second group of dancers who performed a Punjabi folk dance, which, as Kaur explained, is a dance that originated in the state of Punjab in southern India. The energetic movements of the dancers brought audience members to their feet as they watched Lakhveer Kaur, Neha Minhas, and Mishal Raza dance together to the classical sounds of India. Their ankle bells and wrist bangles added to the music and the authenticity of the dance. To close out the performances for the night, Saumya Bojja and Anita Zachariah came up to dance their well-rehearsed Bollywood style duet. This particular style of dancing is based on the popular moves shown in many Mumbai films, better known to Americans as "Bollywood" films. The modem music mixed with the classic sounds of India, such as drums, flutes, and sitars, made for a dance that drew a applause from the crowd. Kaur and Tiwari turned on some spirited Indian music and invited the entire crowd up to learn a traditional Jndian dance called the Dandiya. The dance is done in praise of the Lord Rama and Goddess Durga, using sticks called dandiyas which represent the sword of Durga. This dance led to the closing ceremony, which left everyone in high spirits and full of new knowledge and appreciation for Hinduism and the Indian culture. Campus wins Gold Award for fundraising ROBERT ROSATI robertrosati@botmail.com Next month the University of Wisconsin-Parks ide will receive a Gold Award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District Five for "Best Practices in Fundraising and Development." Four hundred different colleges and universities throughout Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, lIIinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin make up District Five. "Belonging," the name of this year's annual fund campaign for campus employees was a combined effort of both University Relations and Advancement staff. The director of scholarships and the annual fund, Cynthia Jensen, came up with the idea for "Belonging" after calling upon her colleagues to make some light-hearted videos on the Web. The videos contained 29 employees of UW-Parkside explaining how they contribute to the university through their jobs, as well as how they help support athletics, scholarships, academic programs and various projects though their donations to the university. The University of Wisconsin-Parkside graphics photo program manager Don "Come get that good copy!" Lintner, graphic designer Laura Mason, Web master Elizabeth McGee. as well as marketing and publications director John Mielke were involved in producing and launching the four Web videos. The resuits of the "Belonging" campaign were successful. There was a 93 percent increase in donations made by university employees compared to the average donations made in the past four years. The level of participation by employees of the university increased 108 percent. The amount of money raised was a staggering 302 percent higher. Most of the muney raised will be put towards funding schnlarships for students. More than grades, degrees or even jobs, experience shows whether or not an individual knows what he or she is doing. This is the main reason why I work for The Ranger News: experience. At times it feels like I get little more credit than a byline and a bullet point on my resume, but that bullet point is worth all the effort. As registration for the spring semester approaches, I encourage all students at the University of Wisconsin-Parks ide to consider working or interning with The Ranger News. As the primary source for campus news at a university that does not offer a journalism program, The Ranger News is tbe best outlet for learning and practicing written media, photography, editing, advertising, and yes, even comics. . . Unfortunately, there is one disclaimer I need to put on this call for new staff members, and that is that most of the positions on staff are unpaid. Does thiS society focus too much on sex, using it for everything from advertisements about food to campaigns run by presidential ~andidates; or, not enough when It comes to actual matters of life, home. and scbool? This subject gets plastered all over the media. and yet is SO rarely even talked about. This cannot only confuse children and teenagers. but also adults, particularly the College_age adults. "When did you learn about sex?" "Did rOll learn about sex?" "Was the Illformation you were given accurate?" "Who told you? Were discussions encouraged?" "Do you feel you were ready to know?" "How do you feel when sex is talked about?" These are just a few of the questions that seem significant when one broaches the topic of sex. Some people choose to have sex, others choose to. . abstain from all sexual activity, a select few put up safe sexua~ boundaries, while many permit their individual societies to choose for them. The c~o.ice of whether or not one partICipateS in sexual activities can greatly impact one's life. Some feel the need to engage in sexual inter~ourse. others are fine pleasunng themselves, and now the Internet has brought a whole new aspect into the realm of sex. How great of an impact does this have on the lives of college students? The Ranger News is going in-depth and "out on a lim~" to find answers to some questions college students may have, dispel common. yet incorrect. myths and learn ~bout. the reality of sex for the University of Wisconsin - Parks ide student body. Tbey coasted in with 130 total tearn points to earn a third place finish. The regional was held at SIU-Edwardsville on Saturday, Nov. 3. Individually, the top fifteen runners were given an all region title. Three Rangers earned this award. Leading Parkside was Jessica Lamb who finished second out of 153 with a time of 21 minutes and 32 seconds for a 6k course. Also in the top 15 was a pair of seniors. Naomi Fulton finished fourth with a time of 21 :39 and teammate Valerie Hubbard finished fourteenth with a time of 22: 14. On the second page of our paper, underneath the staff list, it states the following: "Each person may take one newspaper per issue date. Extra newspapers can be purchased for $1 apiece. Faculty members and student organizations who wish to use The Ranger News in classrooms should consult the editor-in-chief to reserve however many free copies they wish to use." My suggestion to those who wish to use our newspaper for purposes other than reading is that you come down to The Ranger News office and pick up some old issues. We have piles upon piles of old issues stacked up in our back room. Although we need to keep some for our records, portfolios and advertising, the rest usually wind up in recycling. We have issues from last semester even, that deserve a good home, and your artistic needs might just be the best reincarnation they can achieve. In the future, please do not take new issues from the news stands. Those issues are meant to be read and if our stands arc suddenly empty, there might not be any more issues to put out. Tbat stand will remain empty until the next Tuesday, when we do distribution. Also, we have been keeping track of our circulation records each week. We count how many issues are left over in the stands and compare that number to the number of issues distributed. If students are taking extra issues, the count we have for our circulation will not be accurate. Please respect our efforts to get the news out to students and use old issues for any project you have which does not involve actually reading the paper. I would hope that you could use the classified section of your local newspaper for your papier mache projects in the future. To me, the paper is my baby, and you are killing my baby each time you don't give her the time of day to sit down and actually read ber. No one was injured during the unfortunate demise of the barn, which was 90 years old. The barn belonged to those who owned the land on which the University of Wisconsin- Parkside was built. The bam was also a sports storage building before the Sports and Activities Center (SAC) was created. Dave Buchanan, the Public Information Officer of UW-Parkside, said that the barn no longer being around is a "loss for us" and for the "history of the area." There was gas and some lawn mowing equipment in the barn, which accelerated the fire. Propane tanks, usually stored in the barn, were removed from the structure prior to the start of fire. The Kenosha Fire Department fought the fire because they have a contract with the university to do so. Uw-Parkside elected to acquire the services of the Kenosha Fire Department since they are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week as well as reliable. The Kenosha Police Department is currently investigating the events which caused the barn to catch fire. The bam was raised from the surrounding area so some trees as well as the areas around the trees sustained damages from the fire. The ecostructure of the environment is still intact because it was wet when the fire started, which helped minimize the damage done to the land area surrounding the barn. In her report, Ravinkar stated. "RHA [Residence Hall Association)] is the governing bodyof Residence Life and ~nyUniversity ofWisc~nsin Institution cannot be biased against gender because of the Anti~Discrimination policy." She continued to say thatWhen students apply for a~mJsslon and also housing, they ~1I be obligated to check the x which displays sex as well ~ a box which displays gender. his IS not required so if one wereto check the sex box they do ' not have to check the one Containing gender. Sides were divided dueto Confusion and a misunderstanding of why there would be two boxes if sex and gender were one and the same. Ravnikar quickly cleared up any indiscretions and quarrels of the matter by explaining, " .. .gender is based on what you consider yourself or the sex you identify the best with. For example, I may be born a woman but 1 identify better with males. Imagine how uncomfortable the setting would be living in the dorms with women and I don't identify well with them ...[we] have to accommodate all students." The information that would be received from these applications will not only serve for these purposes, but to give the universities a clue as to how many transgender students are attending their institutions. "We have a diverse body of students, so this should be in order because we don't know who it affects," Ravinkar said, after a few students disagreed. Although the idea was explained to this extent, se~ators had different ideas and feelings toward the new bill. Beverly Spires intervened. saying, "If we are going to get this information, we might as well have an 'other' box ... " which was an idea that was not shunned by any senators or officers, but was soon looked over. Others shared their opinions on the issue until time was running short. The protocol that was mentioned has not been set in stone. but the protocol was very concise in its rules and ~ow the application would be .carned out if it were to be established. Staph infection update Mackenzie Heise Heise007@uwp.edu A few weeks ago. several athletes at UW-Parkside contracted staph infections. Since our initial reporting in the Oct. 23 issue of The Ranger News, this is what we know: There has been one confirmed and one possible case of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). MRSA is a more serious strand of a staph infection that does not respond to normal antibiotics, However, both of the atbletes with the infection have completed their treatments and are now officially cleared as "Come get that good copy!" 110 longer contagious. There have been no new outbreaks in the last week. Everyone naturally has some amount of staph on his or her body. It is when the staph colonizes that the problems begin to occur. Staph is often spread through skin-to-skin contact but can be picked up from many common items. Those infected by staph do not necessarily feel ill. infections usually start as small red bumps that look much like pimples or bug bites. These can turn into large painful areas of infection that require draining. As previously reported, parts of the Sports and Activitiy Center were temporarily shut down and thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Upon reopening, new guidelines were established and have been more forcefully held in place. For example. spray bottles of disinfectant are now more available and must be used in the weight room after using any equipment. There is also hand sanitizer available at many of the facilities in the SAC. From here. the most important thing to do according to Deena Curtis, the head athletic trainer, is to educate people on how to do all they can to prevent a staph infection. The most important thing is to practice good hygiene. This includes washing your hands often, showering immediately after any physical activity. not sharing personal items such as towels. soap, or deodorant, and adequately covering all open wounds. Along with all the normal preventative measures now being taken at the S.A.c. the staff is also purchasing an ozone machine. This machine will fill a room with ozone to kill bacteria. It will be placed on a schedule and moved around the building to various spots with the intent of keeping that area free of some of the bacteria that can spread to cause a staph infection. Even when taking all the precautions described above it is possible to acquire an infection. If you have any questions or concerns involving a staph infection, visit the student health and counseling center. The Ranger News There are a few things I should apologize for this week, as editor in chief and representative for The Ranger News. One of those things is the arrangement of the pages in last week's issue. Although we electronically submitted the pages in the correct order, our printing company mixed them up. When I saw the papers on Tuesday, I was upset, but had to laugh it off. What else could I do? Last week, there was one opinion piece that borders on being libel. The individual who wrote this editorial falsely accused Rainbow Alliance of misappropriating student funds. According 10 the definition of libel, this opinion piece could be considered a criminal action because it harms the character of a student organization on campus. The power of the pen is mighty, indeed. The Ranger News does have the editorial right to refuse to print an opinion. However, I will admit that our editorial staff has a very difficult time deciding when to deny publication. Generally, our reasoning is this: If an editorial bashes or directly attacks an individual or group without offering a sensible reason why tbat group is being attacked, we will cut it. Last week, there was one editorial we chose not to run for that very reason. However, the editorial written about Rainbow Alliance, which we did run, should have been considered more carefully. Of course, hindsight is 20120 and all I can do now is apologize. I would like to publicly apologize to Rainbow Alliance for running the editorial, which falsely accused your organization. In the future, we will try to avoid publishing such blatant accusations, or at least investigate them to determine if they are true or false before printing them. If an agreement by both sides could DOt be reached soon, governorJim Doyle threatened toclose all the schools within theUW-System, including UW-Parkside, for the upcoming UW-System survives budget crisis spring semester. However, on Tuesday, October 23, Governor Doyle approved a state budget proposal. Of the 52 Assembly Republicans, only 23 voted in favor of the budget; however, all 18 of the Senate democrats voted to pass the budget. The bipartisan vote passed the bndget by a margin of 60 to 39 by republicans and a 18 to 15 vote by democrats in the Senate. The budget for the state over the next two years is set at $57.2 billion. There is going to be more than $525 million for public schools, as well as $21 million for every university in the UW-system for financial aid and grants for students. With the state budget passing, there are many implications, but one of the most pressing issues for students is how financial aid will be affected. Financial aid will be disbursed next week to students. There are more than 5,700 students who are on the waiting list for a Wisconsin Higher Education Grant (WHEO). The WHEG awards can be worth as much as $2,700 for this school year per student. The budget will raise funding for WHEG by $26 million over the next two years. Additionally, the Wisconsin Covenant was created as a result of the state budget passing. The Wisconsin Covenant guarantees financial assistance to students across the state who graduate from high school and have good grades. BadgerCare, which gives low-cost health insurance to low-income families across the state. has also been expanded to allow all kids who live in Wisconsin to be covered by insurance regardless of their family's financial situation. and lets people who live in low- income households to purchase BadgerCare for the first time ever. The new budget places limits on the increases on property taxes that the counties, villages. towns, and cities can levy for the next two years. Furthermore, there are $200 million being cut from various state agencies through 2009. The State Medical Society of Wisconsin vowed to file a lawsuit against the transfer of $200 million from the state's fund for paying claims of malpractice. Doyle said that the transfer is perfectly legal. The law states that state governments can operate at levels at which it has in the past until a new budget agreement could be reached; however. Doyle claimed that a shut down of all UW-universities might have had to occur in order to assure that only essential services within the state were set aside. The logic behind the threat of the governor. in his mind, was that because it was entirely possible for the UW-System to go bankrupt in the middle of the upcoming semester. it would be irresponsible to have the universities in session during the spring. continued on page 5 AMessage of Equality and Hope Judy Shepard speaks on campus "Thisis not a gay thing, this is a hate thing." Jaimez, jaimeOOl@uwp.edu Speaking to a crowd of over five hundred students, faculty, staff, and community Illembers, JUdy Shepard brought hermessage of equality to UW-Parkside's Upper Main Place OnMonday, Oct. 22. JUdyShepard is tbe mother of Matthew Shepard, a young man Whowas robbed, beaten, and leftto die on fence in Laramie. Wyoming in 1998; he was targeted specifically because he was guy, Shepard now speaks out azainst hate crimes and to prom~te equality. Aside fro~ the individuals present, Shepard s appearance also drew the attention of the Kenosha News, the Racine Journal Times, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, as well as live coverage from Milwaukee's TV station WTMJ- 4. Shepard's appearance on campus was made possible through the contributions of . many different groups IOclu~g Student Health and Counseling Services, Student Activities. Parkside Student Government Association, Rainbow Alliance, and the Sociology and Theatre Arts Departments. All proceeds from the nights event have gone to the Matthew Shepard Foundation, a group founded by Mathew's parents as an effort to raise awareness, and the most fitting memorial they could think of for their son. After an introduction by Rainbow Alliance's President. Dayvin Hallman, a video produced by the Matthew Shepard Foundation called attention to Matthew's death, as well as that of James Byrd. Jr who was also killed in 1998 in·Jasper, Texas when he was beaten, chained to the back of a truck, and dragged three miles. Byrd's attackers were white supremacists carrying out an attack on an African-American A standing ovation greeted Sbepard just after 7 p.m. She thanked the crowd which had, "given up Monday Night Football" to see her speak. ULMER UlmerOOO@uwp.edu The Segregated University Fee Allocations Committee (SUFAC) voted last week to revise a portion of their bylaws in order to clarify issues of bias. SUFAC determines the way in which student segregated fees are allocated to programs and activities that promote the interests of the student body. All students pay segregated fees and those fees go toward funding major status student organizations. as well as other programs such as athletics. The portion of the bylaws in question addresses whether students on SUFAC can participate in the discussion and voting on an organization to which they claim membership. If a student votes to approve the budget for an organization, and he is a member of that organization, there may exist some level of bias in his decision. Prior to revision, the portion of the bylaws read as "Come get that good copy!" follows: "Members of the SUFAC who are also members or advisors of SUFAC funded Organizati ns, or were such during the last academic year. must abstain from involvement in discussion. An individual must leave the room for the SUFAC discussion and voting discussion jf he or she is receiving a stipend from that organization r department. Senators are exempt from this rule when in regards to Parks ide Student Govcmmem Association lPSGA]." The issue was raised by Carly-Anne Ravniknr. SUFAC member and PSGA senator. that SUFAC needs to "more accurately define and acknowledge biases." This included discussing what the definition of "member" is in the context of the SUFAC bylaws. However, on Tuesday, October 23, Governor Doyle approved a state budget proposal. Of the 52 A embly Republicans , only 23 voted in favor of the budget; however, all 18 of the Senate democrat voted to pass the budget. The biparti an vote passed the budget by a margin of 60 to 39 by republicans and a 18 to 15 vote by democrats in the Senate. The budget for the state over the ne t two ears is set at $57.2 billion. With the state budget pas ing, there are many implications, but one of the most pressing is ue for students is how financial aid will be affected. This week, we decided to try and cover the state budget and all of the Issues and controversy surrounding it. At the start of the week, the budget was still on hold, and Governor Doyle was making threats of closing down th~ UW~system or at least significantly raising tuition. A group of students, ID conjunction WIth United Council, planned to rally and protest on the State steps in Madison on Wednesday, Oct. 24. However that rally was cancelled when the state budget seemed to finally be making some 'progress. In fact, on Tuesday the budget was passed and come Friday, Doyle signed off on it. News changes really fast, and we sometimes struggle to keep up with it. That was the case this week. Our news page editor was trying to write his article for our Thursday deadline, and on Saturday, when he came in to edit, J told him he would need to rewrite it. Of course, he wasn't very happy that he had to spend several hours revising the article, but it was an obvious necessity. We do not want to run old and outdated news in our newspaper. Personally, J am very glad that the budget passed. J am sure that there are many other students that agree. Doyle's threat that the school could be shut down in spring, even if it was an empty threat, terrified me because I am only one semester away from graduation. Also, the threat of tuition increases by as much as $800 next semester greatly alarmed me. As it is. J am already having a hard time earning enough money to pay for my tuition, much less fund a huge tuition increase. J am glad that we can bring students some good news, rather than the doom-and- gloom news I thought we would have to report earlier this week. At the same time, I encourage our readers to let us know the news, as soon as you find out. The Ranger News staff is just a small percentage of the student population here at the University of Wisconsin _ Parks ide and it is nearly impossible for us to keep up with all the news, especially with how fast it moves. In case you have not noticed, we spend most of our time on computers sitting at desks, so we cannot always run fast enough to catch the news. President Bush was addressed by Shepard when she discussed the Matthew Shepard Act, a federal Hate- Crime bill. President Bush, as well as many conservatives, believes homosexuality to be a choice and so prefer the term "sexual preference;" the idea of choosing ones sexual orientation is a concept patently denied by the LGBTQISA community. Judy Shepard also found it disheartening that even thougb Vice-President Cheney has an openly gay daughter, neither he nor his daughter has taken advantage of their positions to push for equality. . Other issues raised that night include the use of words such as «gay" or «queer" negatively, thus turning them into hate speech. Aside from the postcard, the majority of comments made to Professor Yohnk have been positive and supportive. He himself was thri lied at the number of people who made it out to see Mrs. Shepard speak, as well as the fact that the Parkside production of The Laramie Project, the play about Mathew Shepard written by Moises Kaufman, already has a number of sold out shows. Speaking about the postcard, Professor Yohnk said that it was a shame that the author, «didn't have the courage to sign it," and that signing it would have had a lot more impact, Dayvin Halimon, Rainbow Alliance's President, was unable to D&fCC with Shepard's optimism. Though pleased with the overall turnout to the event, he was concerned about the . motives of some attendees, as apparently some professors were giving students class credit for attending. Nonprofit organizations receive help with strengthening their abilityto successfully deliver their programs, developing theirboards, assessing their technology,and strategic planningfocused on leadership. Theprogram focuses on helping bothsmaller and emerging nonprofit organizations. which typicallyhave small budgets or operate with volunteer time, as wellas people or groups who are thinking about forming a nonprofit org~zation. . This grant is of great importance to both the university and the surrounding community. The grant will allow the organization to offer more workshops and to implement as~es~ments and other capacity building activities for nonprofit organizations. In addition about $200,000 of the funds will be re-granted to the benefiting commuruty groups. Another $50,000 will be used for smaller grants ranging from $500 to $2,000 for the purchase of new computers, board retreats, or other needed purchases. The remaining money, $150,000, will be used for larger projects for the prograrn. About 10-12 organizations will benefit from the above portion of the grant per year. Ultimately, this grant will provide the Nonprofit Development Program with the resources it needs to provide services to the community's nonprofit organizations. The Imaginary Invalid by Moliere is a classic comedy whose jokes are just as funny today as they were in 1674. For those of you who are doubtful about seeing it because you think you will not be able to understand the dialogue, think again. The story is easy for anyone to follow and also includes more modem adaptations made by Miles Malleson that are quick to spot, quicker to laugh at, and go without hindering the original plot. This is certainly something for anyone who likes to enjoy themselves. Argan, played by junior Theatre Arts major Philip Zimmermann, is a hypochondriac, meaning he thinks he is fatally ill and constantly cries out for medical attention. His daughter. Angelica, played by junior Theatre Arts major Robyn Schneider, finds herself in a Romeo and Juliet style romance. The play includes plenty of classic Shakespearian elements for diehard theater fans, as well as two musical interludes to have you dancing in your seats. After the areas were closed to investigate the public health issue, the affected areas were then reopened to the public on Friday, Oct. 19. The athletes who were diagnosed with infections are currently being investigated to determine whether or not the staph infections are methicillin- resistant staphylococcus aureus. The results of those tests will not be available until early this week. MRSA is resistant to many of the broad-spectrum antibiotics commonly used to treat staph infect.ions. Because MRSA can resist all but the strongest of drugs, it can cause more serious infections like pneumonia and joint and bloodstream infections. Responding to the possibility of MRSA infections, officials immediately shut down high-contact areas used by the student athletes. Staph bacteria are normally found on the skin or in the nose of about one-third of the population. lf a person has staph on his skin but does not feel sick, he is "colonized" but not infected with the bacteria. Healthy people can be colonized and experience no ill effects; however, it is easy to spread the bacteria to others. When staph bacteria enter the body through an injury to the skin, symptoms may include redness, warmth, swelling and tenderness of the skin, as well as boils or blisters. Staph is most often spread through direct skin- to-skin contact, but can also be picked up from commonly shared items. To control MRSA outbreaks on sport teams, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that all athletes shower and wash with soap after all practices and competitions. All wounds that could be potentially infectious skin lesions should be adequately covered, or the athletes who are infected should be excluded from practice until the lesions are healed or can be adequately covered. Also, all shared sports equipment should be regularly cleaned. The best way to prevent the spread of staph infections is to practice good hand washing. The Wisconsin Division of Public Health recommends washing the hands with anti-bacterial soap under hot water for at least 15 seconds. They also strongly discourage sharing personal items such as towels, clothing, soap and deodorant. If a student develops a skin lesion, he or she should contact the Student Health and Counseling Center at 262-595- 2366. This internship is listed as one of the top ten internships in America by the 2006 edition of the Vault Guide to Internships. Other top ten internships include the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Electronic Arts, Hewlett Packard, INROADS, National Institutes of Health, New York Yankees, Procter & Gamble, SEO Career Program and the Supreme Court of the United States. The internship at Northwestern Mutual allows students to work the way a full- time employee of the company would work, but with part-time hours. Due to the increased demand for student housing on campus, a proposal has been made to build a new residence hall at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, The proposal calls for a new residence hall to give those who will be living in it more privacy than .is currently provided to those who live on campus. If the proposal passes, a four-story apartment, which will have 250 beds, will be built northeast of the student union during thefirsr phase of construction. During the second phase of construction, there will he 112 more beds within the four-story apartment. The building will have 30 living units that will be made with the idea that four people can live in them and 26 living units made so five people can live in them. In an area close to the building, there will be houses to include 17 to 28 students as well as one resident assistant. The apartments wilJ be designed so that the four people who live in them can have two bedrooms for double occupancy. The apartments made for five people to live in them will have three bedrooms, two for double occupancy and one single room. Additionally, there will be a place to live for the residence hall director. Each of the living .. quarters will have one private bathroom with separate toilet and shower spaces. Arts 0 lI8 It takes a lot of time to put together a weekly paper. This did not really occur to me until I tried to actually count the number of hours I put in each week. According to our office door, I have about sixteen posted office hours. However, the reality is a lot more than that, probably even upwards of 30 or more hours per week. Yes, I get paid a stipend for the semester, but if you average it out, I get paid less than a dollar an hour. This is not a plea for sympathy. In fact, I love what I do, and I get great satisfaction in distributing the papers every week. knowing that r helped make each issue a reality. At the same time, it is not just me. If I had to put the paper together all by myself. I would not be able to attend classes, sleep, or have any type of a social life. It is my staff and even other students on campus who really pull the weight to get those papers on the stands each and every week. For our Oct. 2 issue, we increased our circulation by over 14 percent. Although [am not a math major, I can see that it was a'great improvement from the previous week. I also got a lot of feedback on our Oct. 9 issue. which was very colorful and visual and had some great content. However, it was not all good. I got some negative feedback, too, and I would like to take the chance to explain a few things about our opinion page. A few individuals have accused DO TRru us of producing a biased paper due to some of the editorials we ran last week. The Ranger News uses the opinion page as an open fol'lltll for students to discuss their views on different issues in a relatively uncensored format. We 'not request that people write certain opinions, and our staff mayor may not agree with the content of the editorials we print. By no means , is the opinion section a direct reflection of my ~ views as editor in chief, nor am I trying to any hidden agenda by encouraging staff to write editorials with a specific slant. That said, if there is anything in our paper as a whole, or specifically within the opinion section, that you disagree with in any way, you are more than welcome to submit your opinion to The Ranger News. We will run what you send us, even if it puts us in a bad light. For example, I encouraged one of the people with ~ a negative view of our opinion section to'Write an opinion about it. For four dollars. students could purchase a hotdog, chips and a cookie, and get their pictures taken with Frank. All proceeds went to benefit United Way in Kenosha and Racine. Collins, grants compliance specialist with the City of Rockford, Ill., will present "Grant Writing and Resource Development for Faith- Based and Other Grassroots Organizations." Collins is the president of the D.A. Consulting Group which conducts seminars and workshops geared towards belping not-for-profit groups (faith and community based) to build capacity. Hattie Daniels-Rush, commissioner of Presidential Scholars, will be speaking on challenges and opportunities faced by board directors of faith- based non profits, addressing bow the board can effectively recruit and develop its directors to most effecti vely govern their organization while always staying true to its faith-based mission. The Board Development Conference is part of the Center for Community Partnerships' Nonprofit Development Programs' on-going effort La develop a pool of informed people who can help strengthen nonprofit organizations through effective governance and leadership. Alford and Asare will be presenting the opening general session on how to energize your board to fundraise by explaining why it is crucial to develop fundraising strategies based on generational values. The insights provided will help board directors and staff to motivate their boards to fully participate in fundraising. Yvonne Lumsden-Dill, the executive director of the Women's Leadership Institute of Mount Mary College in Milwaukee, is presenting the closing general session titled, "What Do Different Types of "Come get that good copy!" As you can see, some of these people are filling multiple roles at The Ranger News, and that is simply amazing! In the past week, a faculty member from the communications department even came forward to express an interest in advising our organization. We will be speaking to professor Adrienne Viramontes next week to decide if she would be a good fit for our staff. Clearly, we have made good progress in one of our first goals for the fall semester, increasing our staff size. Despite this, there are still several open positions available to those who are interested. These include reporting, photography and design, three of the main components of the newspaper. If you have any interest in these areas. please come down to the Ranger News office at Wyllie D139C to pick up an application or attend our meetings on Fridays at noon in Wyllie D139C. I want to thank students for expressing an interest in working for The Ranger News. We can always use the help, and your response over the past few weeks has been overwhelming. In fact, our staff has nearly doubled in size since the beginning of the semester. I would like to thank a few people for stepping up to leadership roles very quickly, and I'm sure they will all do a great job. The grant will be spread over the course of five years WIth $515,888 being donated per year. The grant will be used to pay for junior and senior Uw-Parkside students who are majoring in chemistry, computer science, biological sciences, geosciences and physics programs. In order to be eligible to receive a grant, you must have a GPA greater than Or equal to 3_0, be a full-rime student. and qualify for federal financial aid. Depending on the amount of financial assistance the recipients of the grant need, it can be used for paying full tuition, hvmg on campus, books. an in-room computer for each student and aid mat is needed in order to attend conferences within their discipline. Originally a traditional stand-up _comic, Rob started bringing his guitar with him to pass the time, playing songs he'd written with . the other comics there. They suggested he try some guitar stuff on stage and the crowds enjoyed it. In exchange for this, the Student Environmental Stewards will have excellent opportunities to learn a significant number of leadership and organizational skills. Tbe pay is $7.50 an hour and requires 60 to 70 hours of work per semester. Stewards can earn up to $1,000 in hourly compensation for1he 2007-08 academic year for the duration of the current academic calendar. Service learning is a method of teaching that includes community work in the curriculum, which provides students with experience in their field of study while providing a valuable service to the community. The UW-Parkside is currently the headquarters of Wisconsin Campus Connection (WCC), which is extends throughout the nation as a student service organization with chapters at 36 colleges "The Volunteer Program is a resource for students, facilitating, and/or partnering with them on volunteer events or activities," - Cosey Jones the director of UW-Porkside's Volunteer and Experiential Program. and universities throughout Wisconsin. Jones said numerous schools are incorporating service learning as a vital part of the education of students and career preparation. Now, everything is up and working again. I never thought J would be so excited to be able to print. Last week Friday, Anne- Marie Durso, the Chief Information Officer of the university came to speak with me about the issues we had been having. You can read more about this in the article "The Ranger News computer update" on page 3. J really appreciate that she came to clear things up and give me a broader perspective on the new computers. On to other things ... [ would like to take this opportunity to note another strange occurrence on our campus. This is the random movement of OUf news stands. 1'01 not sure if this is being done hy janitorial staff, students or (heaven forbid) faculty, but [ find it very aggravating. It is not only an annoyance, though. Our stands are placed in specific places so as to be visually eye-catching and to make our papers readily available. In a few instances, I have found them behind walls or shoved into comers where I couldn't find them for several minutes, even when I was looking for them. To gain access to the visitor parking lot, as well as the loading docks in Union and Greenquist, you must go through. the new road by the Communication Arts parking lot. to the Greenquist loading docks, the Union visitor parking lot, and the Union loading dock. The installation of the utility lines is expected to take two months from the start date. In early August, contractors continued to work on Inner Loop Road and the new sidewalk between Molinaro and Communication Arts. Paving began on Aug. 6 for the new Inner Loop.Road. on the aforementioned date, the sidewalk from the parking lot of the Union was rerouted. Inner Loop Road between. the flag intersection and' the entrance to the Union loading dock was closed to all traffic beginning on June 25 because utility lines were being installed as part of the Union Expansion project. The rest of Inner Loop Road was striped, which allowed two-way traffic as well as access locations on campus. Student Activities is now located in Molinaro D133. This made editing very difficult because everyone e-mails me stories. I had to go to my boyfriend's house, save all of the files onto a flash drive, and bring them into the office. We were also unable to print, so we had to do all of our editing directly on the computers. [ could keep going. It seems that the IT department only has a select few people who know Mac computers (which we usc), and although I called them every single day to get these problems addressed, I would only get someone to come in about once a week. I would like to say thank you to Josephine from IT, who is the one who has responded to every one of my inquiries. She has single-handedly updated our Microsoft Word and reconnected us to tbe Internet. For some rea SOD, we sti II cannot print. I would also like to say thank you to the staff ofTbe Ranger News for continuing to work and get the newspaper on the stands, despite all these difficulties. I've learned early on that a more positive attitude can create a more positive reality. From one computer user to another, I hope you are all having more luck with the new computers on campus. Sometimes technology just gives me a headache. • I really try not to complain too much, but this week I just need to vent a little .. Our news office has been experiencing "technical difficulties" with our computers for the past two weeks now. Frankly, I am sick of it. The.first week, I was glad to see that we had four new computers in our office, courtesy of Evolve IT (Information Technology). However, I was disappointed when I realized that because we had a temporary version of Microsoft Word installed, and the computers would default to this version, we could neither type nor print any documents. Clearly, we require these capabilities as a print publication. Witbout a word processing program that works, we might as well be using typewriters instead of computers. Also tharfirst week, I quickly noticed that we did not have Internet access. At first, I couldn't figure out why our connection wouldn't work. Then I noticed a pink cord trailing out of our office, into the hallway, and then connecting to the table where parking permits were being sold. They were stealing our Internet. I say stealing because no one took the time to actually warn us that they would be using our Internet. Also, it would have heen easy to bring in a new hub so we could both connect to the Internet at the same time. Instead, we were told we would not be ahle to use our Internet until Saturday at 2 p.m. Come Saturday, we still did not have Internet access.
