This year, it was UW-Parkside's tum. Chancellor John Keating tried to be very casual about the visit, even going so far as to say at the Union groundbreaking ceremony, "We don't care if the Regents are here yet!" The Regents' meetings also call for a contingem of chancellors from other-campuses whose business is discussed at their monthly meetings. The Center for Community Partnerships presented its two projects located in both Racine and Kenosha and funded by Wisconsin Coastal Management. The projects (Kenosha's Center for Environme~tal Education, Demonstration and Applied Research and Racine's Root River Environmental Education Community Center) will renovate a building in each e o.m m u n i t y and use it to educate each community about vital environmental concerns. Keating headed a presentation for the regents about the campus' Master Plan, which includes the much-discussed Union expansion. Oyer the course of the next five years, the campus will undergo . major structural changes and improvements meant to improve its face and function. The Regents later approved its shared expense of UW-Parkside's Union expansion. Regent Salas commented, "This campus has many times the acreage per student than UW-Milwaukee!" Regents also heard from UW-Parkside's business students Thad Hosting the Board ofRegents on March 8 and 9, UW-Parkside administration and students presented university. issues for their consideration. The Board of Regents is a group of people who ~ make the operating decisions of all the University of Wisconsin campuses, 4-year, 2-year, and online colleges as well as the extensions. They decide both fund' allocations and operating app~ications. Iii.other words, they decide how much money each campus will receive for what .. purposes and approve operations for each campus. Gabron and Sabba Museteif. The students presented a Power Point presentation concerning their marketing project for Modine Manufacturing. Modine gave UW- Parkside students the puzzling question of how to better compete for business in the "military vehicle market. .Answering this que-stion entailed a semester's worth of intense research and analy.sis. The other .student presenter was Patrick Liesch. 'His Power Point had interesting pictures of meteor samples from Mars. He had funding from NASA to do research on those rocks. The Regents asked bim if he would be doing this kind of research as his career choice. Liesch replied, "No, I want to go in the field of entomology. I would eventually like to study insects." This an.swer surprised them. One Regent replied- that he was sure Liesch would be successful given the research he presented that day. UW-Parkside was not by any means the only business the Regents heard and approved. Other schools in the UW-System were given attention as well. Because the.Education Committee did not have enough time to cover aIJ of its business, UW-Parkside's presentation on the Diversity Scorecard was tabled until its next meeting. WESTBROOK westbOO2@uwp.edu Parkside Student Government Association had its first regular meeting in two weeks on March 9, after several members returned from a conference in Washington, D.C. At the operring of the meeting, several members of PSG A, including president Tyson Fettes and Vice- president 'Anthony Dubose, talked about what they brought back from the trip. Dubose said that one of the things he saw at the conference was that many other schools' student governments do more things outside of the school, not just voting on the' budget. Dubose' suggestion that PSGA should start doing more such things 'and not spending so mucb time dealing. with issues Irke the budget received applause from many of those in attendance. Senator early-Anne Surber questioned how those who went would be spreading what they learned to the rest of the student body. Fettes said that he and PSGA President Pro- Tempore Brian Graziano had already been talking about programs that they could put on and said that they may be doing one in the near future aimed at teaching students how to lobby. The majority of the meeting focused on a. new resolution, sponsored by Carly-Anne Surber, entitled "Resolution in Support of Creating an Inclusive Student Government." The pieceoflegislation stated, "BE IT RESOLVED that this student government will take the first step by renaming Women's, Issues Director to the Director of Gender and Sexuality." The resolution was created in regard "to the recent presidential vetoes against the addition of LGBT Issues Director, due to opposition of an expanded executive board," as stated in the document. Part of the argument is that "the Diversity Director should not be over-extended to cover all issues .of race, ethnicity, culture, and religion along with issues of sexual/gender orientation/identity, but should instead be able to work on promoting people of color," as stated in the resolution. Surber said that it would be easiest to expand the Women's Issues director position to include these issues, as opposed to other current director positions. Senator Dayvin Halmon' asked whether this renamed director would also deal with men's issues. Surber said that he or she would. Emily Juniou, PSGA's current Women's Issues director, said that she could see a problem with losing the separation that Women's Issues currently has. Questions were also raised about whether the name is too broad, as was argued to be the case with the title of Diversity Director in previous meetings. Surber said that the change would make issues of gender. and sexuality more visibly inclusive. "If it's a need, let's make it a visible need," she said. It's the time. of the year when I realize that the semester is halfway over and I haven't finished anywhere near half of my academic work. And, because of the break. some of our stories are a bit dated; however, there were some things that I saw in our paper when I got back that were welcome surprises. We had 100 Words (MORE OR LESS) submissions and multiple editorials about things that had happened in OUI previous issues and current happenings on campus. l've talked about this before, but I don't remember exactly what I said. so to me it still seems topical. One of the functions of our newspaper is to serve as a public forum, a place to debate issues and for people-to react to what they read and observe. I don't mean to say that a paper's editorial section is just a deposit box for rants: rather, it provides a medium for intelligent discourse between people. I have been aware for a while that our paper had been lacking in editorials, but I really began to appreciate our need for them on my way back from Florida last Thursday. I picked up a copy of The Atlanta Journal Constitution on my way through Georgia. I was reading the opinion section of said paper and the editorials therein. What I read were editorials based on facts and structured in the form of solid arguments. Over time, I've' learned to have greater appreciation for editorials, not for the aspects of outlandish claims and sensationalized quotes, but for the expression of ideas. the debate between people, and solutions proposed for the problems the news section brings to light. I don't consider any part of a newspaper to be more important than the actual, hard news, but strong editorials can give a newspaper a personal quality and make it more interactive and lively. Any newspaper is made up of multiple facets, and the whole requires a balance in order to be successful. Editorials can add another dimension to this whole, and create an exchange of ideas and feedback. MORGAN m?rga017@uwp.edu The UW-Parkside State offhe School address was given in Main Place at noon on Wednesday Feb, 28. Brian Graziano, the President Pro Tempore of Parkside Student Government Association started the address. He said..that PSGA is happy with how active the student government is and how it listens to the students. He said that student government is doing all it can in regards to the interest of the students. The senat6rs may not agree with each other on certain issues. but they all agree on improving the educational experience of all UW-Parkside students, he said. From there he turned the floor over to Vice Chancellor of Student Services -and Dean of Students Dr. Stephen Mcl.aughlin. McLangWin's main point of emphasis Wason the OW System Board of Regents, which will be meeting at Uw-Parkside on March 8-9. The Board of Regents consists of three committees (Business and Finance, Education, and 'Physical Planning) in which 17 members participate. The schedule of events can be found on the UW-Par'kSide Web site. He encourages all students.to take part in this. The Board of Regents only makes its stop at UW- Parkside about once every decade. In addition to the Board of Regents, McLaugWin said that about an additional 100 people will be on campus during this time. He made the point to be patient with parking. Students should come earlier to find a parking spot on March 8 and 9. McLaugWin also advertised the ceremonial ground breaking of the new Student Union, which will be held on the north side of the Union at4:40 p.m. on March 8. If everything goes according to plan, the $100 million project should be completed by the fall of 2009. In - addition to the new union, the roads and parking lots will also be going under renovation. McLaughlin also mentioned the $40 million expansion of the Communication Arts building. From here he "Stop the violence. Break. the silence." The chanting could be heard from the Union Cafeteria as the marchers Circled the room, grabbing attention from anyone buying or eating food inside. After the cafeteria, Rainbow Alliance moved on to Union Bridge, through Molinaro Hall, and up to the Library, when the chanting suddenly stopped. As.Dr. Stephen McLaughlin, UW-Parkside dean of students, addressed Main Place during' the Slate of the School address, the marchers quietly fanned two rainbow- colored columns on each side of the seats. Standing quietly and calmly, they displayed their signs, waiting for their voices to be heard. Before marching through campus, forcing students to hear their chants and read their signs. the supporters of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) community gathered in Union Hall. Although it was a pleasant atmosphere for the supporters who gathered to protest, they were led to this rally under very unpleasant circumstances. Carly Surber, a leader of the protest, explained what led to this rally and why they were gathered to march on the State of the School address "LGBT students" staff, and faculty are subject to hate speech in classrooms and in the hallway; posters are ripped down. Homophobic graffiti is rampant across our campus, which creates an atmosphere of violence, of impending violence that every LGBT community member of this campus can feel or has experienced." Actually, I started by watcbing the procession of marchers Walking from the Union chanting with signs in bang. I watched two of our reporters listening intently and recording the events. [watched two more members of our staff circling the scene and taking pictures. What I thought at that moment was how proud I was of our. staff. It's one of the images that comes into my head when I think of journalism: The event breaks, and everyone jumps into action. The idea may be a little sensationalized in most circumstances, but the dedication inherent in it is real and that's the part that impresses me more than anything. This is something that took me a while to realize and accept, but it's something that [ think holds true in most situations, One of the most promising things that I've seen in The Ranger News recently is the influx of people who seem committed to investigating and breaking the news. I think that this has been reflected in our publications. The stories we've had have been getting progressively better and more well- researched. Our Question of the Issue has been more thought-provoking in recent weeks than it's been in a while. Our pictures, comics, and a variety of other aspects of The Ranger News have seen improvement. I think the foundation we've been laying is more solid than it's been for a while, and T think it's a foundation that will support a progression in the quality of our product. Division ill institutions tend to focus more on academics with less emphasis on athletics; however, they attract attention through athletics because people enjoy watching athJetes play for the love of the game without scholarships and UW-Parkside has recently been chosen for a pilot study focused on raising the awareriess of Division II universities. The goal is for Division II schools, like UW-Parkside, to find their place among Division Tand III schools. Because Division [ schools money motivating them. Campus Crusaders for Christ sponsored Leahy's appearance. Pornography is more accessible to individuals today While most people who purchase pornography ~ay think that by doing so it IS harmless, in reality, it can possibly lead to very serious consequences. One individual who knows this all too well is than ever before. There are numerous ways that people can view pornography if they wish to do so, like browsing the lnternet or going to adult bookstores to purchase adult videos and adult magazines. The United States spends $57 billion a year on pornography. so it should not be surprising that the U.S. is the largest consumer of pornography in the world. Additionally, the United States is the largest exporter and producer of pornography in the world. Leahy started his lecture by stating some statistics. Adult bookstores outnumber McDonalds by a 2-to-l ratio. On the Internet, there are 40 million Web sites that have pornography on them. He said that it was brought up by another member of SUFAC in a previous meeting that after the donation by Darshan Dhaliwal, it would be a slap in the face to cut Parkside International Club's hudget. Kirleis went on to say that there were severaJ reasons that PIC was not cut, while other organizations were. He said that all the money going to PIC would be going back to the campus; whereas, events held by Sacred Circle are done more in the community than on campus. "Patty Jensen worked very very hard to get people to the powwow," Kirleis said, but he continued that the event was underattended. Kirleis said also that the reasons for the difference in allocations included the large segment of international students on campus and the desire LO retain them on the Uw-Parkstde campus. In regard to the budget allocations as a whole, Kirleis said that he thought the SUFAC committee did a good job and that when you are dealing with budgets, a lot of people will be unhappy. Fettes said that despite the controversy over the budget presented at the meeting, organizations are still funded very well right now. Said Fettes, "We can make it work." The senate then decided to vote on the budget as it was. After a roll-call vole was taken, the budget for 2007-2008 was passed ind will be sent to the chancellor. The vote tally was 20 for. 7 against, and 5 abstentions. The only proposal discussed at the meeting was the Resolution Supporting an LGBTQA Center, sponsored by senator David Wilson. According to Wilson, the new center would potentially be in the bookstore in the new Union building on campus. However, according to Stephanie Sirovatka Marshall, advisor to PSGA, there is no confirmation of this yet. Continue To Page 4 The 2007-2008 budget dominated Parkside Student Government Association's latest meeting Friday, Feb. 23. After two rounds of budget cuts, PSGA's Segregated University Fees Allocation Committee presented the final draft of the budget to he sent to Chancellor John Keating pending approval by the PSGA Senate. . Much of the controversy focused on the cuts to Sacred Circle and Parkside Adult Student Alliance, who were allotted $12,000 and $15,000, respectively. Senator Andrew Scheeler questioned why those two organizations received so much less than other "minority organizations," such as Black Student Union and Latinos Unidos, who were listed to receive $24,800 and $20,500, respectively. Louie Kirleis, director of SUFAC, juxtaposed the number of people he saw attending BSU meetings and the number he saw attending Sacred Circle meetings and said that that was part of the reason for the disparity in dollar :- --1 amounts. Kirleis said that A BSU meeting might fill a lecture hall, while he saw only a few people when attending a meeting for Sacred Circle. Senator Carly Anne Surber argued that to provide the additional funds would only mean adding another $20-30 per student. Further controversy insued as Senator Ted Lucier claimed that Kirleis made a remark during the SUFAC meeting earlier on Feb. 23 in regard to Sacred Circle that Lucier called biased and racist. It seems like every week, I plan to get things done earlier in the week and have everything ready to go on Sunday so that we can get done before Monday morning hits us. Because it's almost 10:30 Sunday night, I'm pretty sure I failed in that task yet again. I think it's a pretty fair assessment to say that I'm a procrastinator. When-I'm working on the paper during the week, I always figure that everything can be put off until Friday and then Saturday and then Sunday. By then, the desire of my brain is sort of a.mix between wishing I had been more industrious during the week and the desire to go to bed. When the issue comes out on Tuesday, I notice <tilthe things I wish I would have done better, and I see where I could have spent all the extra time I wasted on Facebook (and now MySpace) over the course of the week. 1 tbink the problem that I have, both in The Ranger News and in my life in general, is not seeing the broader picture .. When I'm working on the issue, I may spend too little time on things that I'll later agonize over, and I'll obsess over some potentially controversial element of the publication that 1 look back on and wonder what I was thinking to 1 worry about it so much. It's something that I think applies to the newspaper as a whole. I remember being at our last newspaper conference, and one of the presenters was talking about the design of the newspaper. He talked about how each of us probably sees each story and each photo and each division separately, but it's important to look at the whole thing, because when the reader picks up the issue, he or she sees the entire thing at once. It may seem pretty obvious to some people, but I really didn't think about the big picture of things as much before I worked for The Ranger News. It's one of the more important skins I think I've gained here, looking outside of what's going on Sunday night, people getting stressed out and the little controversies that might arise from any given piece, and seeing the entirety of what we're doing, seeing that no matter what, the issue will still come out on Tuesday. And, once that happens, all it means is that it's time to start working on the next one. I was going to write more, but I think I'll leave you here. Two new resolutions were proposed and passed by the senate. focusing on UW- Parkside's membership With the United Council of UW Students and the ability for UW-Parkside students with families to become more involved with school events. The Spiegelhoff Act, proposed by PSGA senator Michael Spiegelhoff, will place a referendum on the April 2007 bailot giving UW-Parkside students the choice of whether to keep or decline the university's membership with the United Council of UW Students. Currently, all students are taxed a $2 fee per semester toward UW-Parkside's membership. "The Parkside Student Government Association needs to be fiscally responsible with all student dollars [... ] a two dollar tax on the student body per semester is a theft to the patrons of the UW-Parkside for [a] less than favorable result and whereas it is an uneLhicaJ decision to feed a mandatory fee to an organization that is failing, the resolution states" Senator Adam Schemm, who co-sponsored the Spiegel hoff Act, explained to the senate that the United Council of UW Students is a failing organization due to its inability to maintain its staff. The executive director was fired and organizing and communications director resigned, leaving those positions of United Council vacant, currently, Senator Patricia Jensen proposed the second resolution passed at the PSGA meeting Friday. The Family Pass Resolution centers on UW- Parkside students with children and their ability to attend student sporting events and various other events that are held in the evenings and on the weekends. Jensen suggested that UW- Parks ide should offer students the opportunity to purchase family passes so they can attend school events with their children and families. It was exciting to talk with so many people who face the same frustrations and who share similar goals and enthusiasm for reaching them. It's invigorating to look at what other schools' papers are doing and see what works and looks cool and figure out how we can incorporate new ideas into what we're already doing. Hearing inspiring speeches by long-time journalists can rejuvenate one's ambition to investigate and uncover truth. The complicated part after the conference, though, is trying to sustain that enthusiasm when we get back, when we have to put the plan into motion, when the problems we solved in our heads have to be evidenced in print. It's easy to be enthusiastic when you see the results in your head only seconds after envisioning the changes you want to make. Sometimes I ignore or forget the amount of time it takes to implement the new ideas that catch my attention, which is the way I felt on the ride back from the conference. However, as I finish writing this, we're in the middle of a layout process that started 8 hours later than usual and is characterized by many of the problems we left in Wisconsin on Friday, One of the sessions we attended was a critique of the overall look of a university's newspaper. We stayed around afterward and talked to one of the conductors of the workshop, and one of the things he stressed to us was to break down the project we bad in front of us, to engage in and accomplish smaller tasks, one at a time, In some ways I liken it to the mantra created around this office a couple years ago: make each issue better than the one previous to it. It's a building proces. , and that's what I think we have to do now. When you look at this issue. you're not going to see evidence of every single thing we learned over this past weekend, but pieces of that knowledge are there. My goal now is to show more and more of what we've learned in the weeks and months ahead and to gradually evidence more and more of the insight and information we've acquired by adding to what is already a publication of which I'm very proud. So, I think we've already begun the process of strengthening our paper. Even before we left, we saw improvement in our Question of the Issue and the amount of news stories we covered. I think that this issue will show some of the direction in which we're moving and how we're improving our publication as a whole ... well. except having my face on page 2 every week. WESTBROOK westbOO2@uwp.edu Parkside Student Government Association president Tyson Fettes announced during the PSGA meeting, at noon, on Feb. 9, that he had vetoed the resolution passed last week to create separate positions of Multicultural Director and LGBTQA Director in the PSGA senate. The resolution, sponsored by senator Carly Anne Surber, stated that it be resolved that "we support the acknowledgement and promotion of Multicultural Issues, Women's Issues, and LGBTQ issues by establishing the separate positions of Multicultural Director and LGBTQA Director." LGBTQA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, and Allies) people "are part of a community of similar interests, not as a unified and transmitted culture, race, or ethnicity, although those individuals may experience a crossing-over according to their background and heritage," stated the resolution. Fettes said during the meeting tbat he has instructed the diversity director. Anita Robertson, to change the name of the Diversity Committee and its bylaws to include LGBTQ issues by Feb. 23. Robertson's next meeting of the Diversity Committee will take place on Feb. 22 in the PSG A office at 5 p.m. Fettes had previously said that be felt that the Diversity Committee could handle the responsibility of also covering LGBTQ issues and that he did not want to create positions for the sake of doing so. According to Fettes, he has been under pressure to cut executive stipend spending within PSG A and that adding a new director position would conflict with that (In the meeting on Jan. 19, David Wilson and Patricia Jensen co-sponsored the "Excessive Executive Stipends Act" to cut executive spending on stipends). This company was most recently on campus last week on Feb. 6. Vector Marketing is the-sales division of the Alcas Corporation, who are the manufacturers of CutCQ Cutlery. Among the ways that Vector Marketing recruits people is by having flyers across campus that advertise the starting pay to be $15 per hour. The only prerequisite for the job is that the applicant must be at least 18 years old. However, the flyers are very vague as to what the job entails, as it is not explained what it is that a person has to do to earu that Sf S. The $15 is only a base pay for each appointment setup. An employee is not paid for the three-day training seminar, the gasoline for traveling to appointments (as an employee has to use his or her own car to get to appointments). or the time for calling peopleto set up appointments. Vector Marketing has a history of deceiving potential employees and unethical business practices. An August 2004 article written for The Statesman Journal states that Vector Marketing "has outraged students nationwide with its recruiting and employment-related practices." The same article had an interview with Emily Puterbaugh, a fanner employee for Vector Marketing in Tacoma. Washington. who explained that whenever someone called the office inquiring about the job, she "was given a script to read, which provided liule information about the job. emphasizing that it didn't involve door-to-door sales or telemarketing. I'IB& I. -~ .............. I was actually kind of glad this week when I noticed that someone had written to point out some mistakes we had made in last week's issue. I don't mean to imply that I'm glad that we made some mistakes; though, we certainly did make some; 1 was just glad that someone had actually written something to us at all. It seems like every week ['!I' worried about something during the layout of the paper. Whether it be a comic or a story, there is invariably something that 1 think is going to cause a lot of problems when the issue comes out on Tuesday afternoon. SOl I sit or and think about whatever I perceive the problem to bet until about Thursday at 3 or 4 p.m .. when the Issue has been out for about 2 days and no one has said a word. I guess that's the point where 1 becnme a little disappointed, because it leads me to one of two scenarios: either no one read the paper that week, or no one really cared about anything in it. There have been a couple of weeks in which I think the former situation is true. If \ see that our stands are about as full as they were when we put the papers on them, then 1 can guess that people simply aren't picking it up. However, it most instances, I attribute the lack of feedback to the latter of the IWO aforementioned scenarios. Getting people interested is the hard part. More than once people have told me that we could get more readers if we'd do this or that, if we had more film reviews. for instance, or that we could get more writers if we just let everyone write whatever they want, like editorials or CD reviews. I've found that the difficulty is trying to get people interested and committed to The Ranger News while, at the same time, preserving our identity as a NEWSpaper. The Ranger News is the student newspaper of UW- Parkside, a means of informing the campus of what's going on in this small community, but we also consider ourselves an educational entity, as well, trying to teach journalism in a university that offers no official program in it. I don't mean to say that editorials and other aspects of such a publication are nat important. However, we are a newspaper, and I believe that first and foremost, we should focus on news. That could be a little idealistic, and I guess if everyone quits and I'm standing in the office all by myself, I'll realize that I made a mistake, but for now, I think this is the right direction. -Andrew C. February 6. 2007 Music And Soul page 5 Amnesty International Demonstrates Against Guantanamo_-----:- BY TINA STRAUSS Strau012@uwp.edu In an attempt to "shake off student apathy" toward the human rights violations occurring at Guantanamo Bay Navel Base, Amnesty International paraded members (rom the Union cafeteria to Main Place wearing orange jumpsuits ffi with burlap sacks over :3 their heads on Wednesday, ~ Jan. 31. Members carried F! signs that read. "Denounce ~ Torture, Close Guantanamo ~ Bay Today, and Stop Human:;; Rights Abuse." 5 Elise Dunton. president iE of the Uw-Parkside Chapter of Amnesty International, explained that it has been five years since the United States took detainees: to the prison at Guantanamo Bay and that the human rights violations that take place there are largely ignored. Katie Smith, the secretary of Amnesty International, added, "Students are apathetic. They don't care about what's going on in the world. and to an extent, that's understandable: we're all busy ... but there are serious violations of human dignity going on in this world. We are just trying to find a way to best draw attention to those issues." Specifically, the issue being addressed by the demonstration was the treatment of Guantanamo Bay detainees who are assumed to have information on terrorist activities. Smith explained that Amnesty International is concerned about prisoners' welfare because ..the Geneva Conventions don't apply; they're not technically prisoners of war. This isn't technically a war. Even though it's a war on terror and a war in Iraq, it's not really a war according to the administration. 1£ they're not prisoners of war, they don't get any of the prisoner of war considerations whatsoever, so [the military personnel] can torture them." Smith also emphasized that many detainees "haven't even been charged with a crime. They are just being detained in the event that possibly someday they might have some information:' To that, Dunton added, "And in the meantime, they're tortured. [It's] unbearable," The demonstration was designed to sbock onlookers, and Amnesty International members were pleased with students' responses. The members in orange jumpsuits and shackles marched across campus as classes were ending; the halls were filled with students. Smith noted that "People paid attention. That's all you can hope for." Amnesty International's ultimate goal is to denounce torture by closing Guantanamo Bay. Demonstrations like the one that took place all campus Wednesday are being held throughout the world to increase awareness of the situation and inspire people to assist in ~ the effort to close !< the base. Dunton 2encburages students ~to contact her at iii dunfoOOl @"nwp, ~ edu to ask questions e:or get involved. i Late Budget Requests Penalized Most campus organizations were disappointed to see cuts when the ~tudent University Fee Allocation Committee notified them of their budgets for 2007·08. The exception was the Athletics Department, which received a 9 percent increase in funds, giving them $36,000 more than last year. Besides general cuts for most organizations and 1 departments, an additional penalty was imposed on some organizations for submitting their budget requests late. Sacred Circle and the Parkside Adult Student Alliance were penalized for delayed requests. One of the fees charged to students on their tuition bills is the segregated fee. The funds collected from this fee are distributed among campus departments and organizations. To be eligible for these funds, .student organizations must submit a budget request and presentation to SUFAC, the committee designated to allocate the segregated fees. SUFAC determines each organization's allotment, which the Parkside Student Government Association then approves or denies. Despite an expected $]00 increase in segregated fees next year. organization budgets are still being cut. Louie Kirleis, director of SUFAC, explained that these cuts are necessary to fund the Union Expansion. He also emphasized that "some of our student organizations are over-funded compared to other UW- System schools. It's not that they're not doing good things .. .lt's just, financially, we can't have everybody doing every program they want to put on." In addition to receiving fewer student funds, several organizations were penalized for missing the Jan. 5 deadline for budget requests. Kirleis explained that according to the SUFAC bylaws, penalties for late requests are "under the discretion of the committee.' Carly-Anne Surber. a member of SUFAC, said that the I percent deduction per day late is outlined in the bylaws, but the organizations were nor aware that late submissions would prohibit them from presenting their proposal to the committee. She said ..."As far as not presenting, that's not a policy; that was just a decision, so they would not have had any previous knowledge that that could have happened." The decision to deny Sacred Circle and PASA the opportunity to present resulted in both organizations receiving a $0.00 allotment for 2007 ·08. Surber said that the $0.00 allotment is not permanent because "if organizations or departments .. _want more money than they have been allocated, they can appeal to the board and try to convince the board not to cut them." PASA's appeal took place Friday, Feb. 1. Sacred Ci~cJe has been allowed extra time to organize their appeal. which they will submit this week. Arts Gallery 12:00 PM-l:oo PM Noon Concert: 20th Century Music Recital Union Cinema Theater This week's Noon Concert has a UW- Parks ide sound to it. The compositions of our own James Crowley are featured. 'Scordatura' is performed by guitarist George Lindquist. This solo classical guitar piece featuring extended techniques and unusual textures. The title refers to the fact that the guitarist must tune his low E string to E flat, allowing normally unplayable chords to be played, and creating unexpected melodic patterns. "Chromatic Etude" is performed by saxophonist Ken Fabis. This short movement shows suspected but for which I hadn't devised a solution. One issue that ( hadn't really considered before was a matter of personality, that there was no real face of The Ranger News as rhere had been in the past. [suppose that r had really tried to avoid making myself very visible, trying to allow the publication emphasize the work of the individuals who created it, rather than the guy in charge. But, we came to the conclusion that the paper had become too impersonal and that there may have been a disconnect with people who read it. Not to say that throwing a picture of me on Page 2 with some text will change that, but we decided that it would help, not only in establishing a better repoire with our readers bur also in getting people to get more involved with The Ranger News. We came up with a lot of ideas for The Ranger News, but I'd still like to encourage all of you to give us your feedback and opinions, as well. If you don't like something in the paper, let us know. PSGA President Tyson Fettes announced that secretary Michele Slabik resigned from her role in PSGA this past week. Fettes said that PSGA will be looking to fill this position and that applications are available in the PSGA office. 10 his report, Fettes also said that a state of the school address will be held at noon on Feb. 28 in either mid or upper Main Place. In a report from Constitution Committee director Michael Scerpella, Scerpella announced that the new constitution will be e-mailed out to senators later than was expected for their review. In his director report, Louis Kirleis, director of the Segregated University Fees Allocation Committee, announced tbat Jan. 29 at 4:30 p.m. will be the last point at which student organizations and other groups can appeal the amount of money SUFAC suggested allotting them. The first of four additions to the PSGA senate at the meeting was Alesha Goss, the new representative of the UW- Parks ide Women's Center. PSGA's constitution calls for the Women's Center to have a representative in PSGA meetings. The other three additions to the senate were by way of elections. Anthony Rcgnsvoog, Sandi Love, and Richard Anderson were all elected to the PSGA senate on Friday. The senate returned to the Excessive Executive Stipends Act introduced to senator David Wilson in the previous meeting. Wilson was not in attendance for the meeting, but Patricia Jensen, rl~:;:;: who co-sponsored the bill with Wilson, was at the meeti ng. so th resolution could still be discusse and voted upon. The resolution stated that "no stipends for any organization should exceed a maximum amount of 25% of tha organizations [sic] final budget." The resolution was rejected by a voteof6-12-3. The Excessive Executive Stipends Act was the first of two resolutions by Wilson and Jense that ~ere discussed at the Jan. 2 meeting. The second was titled the Information and Training of Student Governance Act. STRAUSS Strauf) l 2@uwp.edu UW - Parkside is among 76 other post- secondary institutions recognized by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in December 2006 for outstanding community engagement, as well as being among the 62 institutions to receive the honor in two separate categories. The Carnegie Foundation classifies the characteristics and activities of colleges and universities for the purpose of educational research. All accredited institutions are automatically classified in the categories of Undergraduate Instructional Program, Graduate Instructional Program. Enrollment Profile, lIndergraduate Profile, and Size and Setting. The elective classification category is a new addition to the classification system. and Community Engagement is the first elective category. 88 colleges and universities applied to be recognized by the Community Engagement classification. The Community Engagement classification is defined on the Carnegie Foundation's Web site as "the collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities ... for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources-in a context of partnership and reciprocity." WESTBROOK westb002@uwp.edu Diversiry issues played a prominent role at parkside Student Government Association's first meeting of the semester, Friday, Jan. 19. President Tyson Fettes announced that the resolution introduced last semester by Senator Carly-Anne Surber to create the position of LGBTQ Director had been vetoed (LGBTQ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning). Fettes said that he believes that PSGA's diversity director can handle those responsibilities, adding that PSGA should not create new positions for the sake of creating new positions, as it would leave the door open to any number of new positions being. created. Surber said that she had collected over 250 signatures from students on the LlW-Parkside campus in favor of having an LGBTQ director position and that for PSGA not to have the position would mean they are ignoring the LGTB voice on this campus. Surber motioned to add an appeal of this veto to old business for the meeting, but the motion failed. President Pro-Tempore Brian Graziano advised Surber that a resolution can be reintroduced at any time and that she could bring it back at the next meeting. Surber said in an interview that she will be reintroducing the resolution in PSGA's next meeting, but if necessary, a speak-out or rally may be created all campus. She said that any such demonstration would be in Main Place and could include a march from the Union to the PSGA office. Emily Junion, director of the'PSGA's Women's Issues Committee, offered that committee as a means of covering some of the issues that may have fallen under the responsibilities of LGBTQ director. An eclectic blend of groups set up tables for the event, which was coupled with an Ice Cream Social. Groups used the event as a means to recruit, advertise, and get their names out. The Fair also featured an organization parade from the Union back to Main Place. Spring Convocation Honors BYKAJTLYNM. ULMER eapoe666@yahoo.com Over eggs and pancakes, Chancellor John Keating headed the spring 2007 Convocation, beld at the Parkside Cafe on Jan. 11, by stressing UW- Parkside's diversity, community engagement, and academic excellence. After announcing new faculty and staff positions, Keating reiterated the two charges he was given by the University of Wisconsin-System when he was hired: to increase enrollment and to engage the campus with the community. Statistics show that UW- Parks ide is the most diverse UW-Systern university, with 40 percent of its students in the lowest two quintiles in the state for income, and many of them are the first in their immediate family to attend a higher educational institution. Because UW-Park.<;;ide continues to be an inclusive campus, incidents like the removal or defacing of posters advertising events by the campus' LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning) organization Rainbow Alliance will not be allowed. "This will not be tolerated. We are an inclusive campus and that means everyone," Keating said. "And if there's anyone who doesn't like that inclusiveness, they should get out of this campus because they don't belong in our culture." March 8-9 the Board of Regents will be visiting the university for the first time in over eight years. For this visit, Keating wants to focus on academic excellence, as opposed to the diversity on campus. 'When the regents come here, we're not going to say 'We're the most diverse campus;' 'we're the campus that's really serving the poor in the state;' 'we're the campus that is the best value added of any campus in the system.' We're going to concentrate on our excellence, our academic excellence. Our first mission is to educate our students with high-quality faculty and staff, and we're doing that," Keating said. In the past seven months, staff updated the SOLAR system. To avoid being caught in the "solar eclipse" while the system was down Jan. 4-8, professors posted grades earlier than in previous years. At the end of what Keating described as a "gruesome type of process," students experienced the best turnaround in 15 years for grade entry and submission by their professors. The School of Business and Technology retained accreditation from the . Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International. Uw-Parkside is among the 34 percent of U.S. business schools and 7 percent of schools worldwide to hold this accreditation. The Master Plan promises significant alterations to the university, including the Union expansion, due to begin in February and be completed in 2009. With much of the week's activity centered around Uw-Parkside's Men's and Women's Basketball teams, there will be a pep rally on Wednesday, Jan. 24, which includes a meet and greet session with the players at noon in Main Place. The event features free food, and, according to UW-Parkside Athletic Director Dave Williams, "We'll have lots of free things to give away." The games begin on Thursday, Jan. 25, as Women's Basketball starts at 5:30 p.m. Student organizations have the opportunity to earn money for their organizations during the Thursday and Saturday games, held in the DeSimone Gymnasium, in Uw-Parkside's Sports & Activity Center. President Tyson Fettes defended the proposed stipends, saying that he is the lowest-paid student government president among 4-year UW-System schools and thaI the percentage of the budget proposal spent on stipends is 3 percent lower than the 35 percent that they could have requested. The motion to cut the stipend figure. was voted on and not approved. The senate then voted on the budget proposal as a whole, and it was approved. Young on the senate nominees was postponed. The next PSGA meeting will be Friday, Dec. 15, in Molinaro D139. Treatment Act. Rieppel is from Switzerland; he studied in London and graduated from the University of Zurich. In 1951, a hypothesis was fonned that snakes come from a terrestrial origin. Snakes originated from reduced limbed lizards as evidenced by the reduction of eye and limbs. Many lineages i~tly reduced limb to aryina degrees. The soloists in "Rockin' Jerusalem" were Kristina Dahl and Adrian O'Connor. Dahl's operatic, soprano voice soared once more. The caroling sounded like it was a big hit. University Chorale was back on the stage to close out the show with four shorter pieces. The final song, "My God is an Awesome God." was. a delightful ending to an excellent concert: This song had the choir swaying, sidestepping, and smiling throughout the entire piece. The soloists were Ayesu Lartey, Lizann Villatoro, and Benjamin Hacker. Each of these soloists did a great job and had a nice. strong voice. Bravo to you all! There was supposed to be one more section of the audience joining with the choir in singing more Christmas carols. but this moment never happened. Alejandro Alumbreros accompanied the choirs on piano. .1've never seen Alumbreros perform before, but he was clearly a professional and has been playing the piano for a long time. He was fun to watch, and his hand movements on the keys were intriguing. The three artists who were featured during the Senior Art Show were Jamison Bell, William Hinca and Michael Rash. ' All three of them had a number of works on display, to the point where 55 total items were on display for the public to look at. Bell showcased numerous works that were completed through the process of printmaki n 0O' Hinca displayed many designs that used graphic artistry, and Rash had an abundance of illustrations on display. 'In addition to their art work, all three artists had statements on display for the public to view, which gave an insight into what types of characteristics are present in their works as well as revealing a bit about themselves. Carion's film examines the events of the first '~lrrujs.~d,tI!e,fjt:s~~ f!~"of,WqrldWar I" in which German. French. and Scottish soldiers enjoyed each other's drink, music, and company to come together on a frozen battlefield to forget the war for a few hours. Together opposing sides of war came to a peace that their commanders could nOl understand or accept, disbandjng or relocating those units which had fraternized with the opposition, for as the film's tagline says. "Without all enemy. lhere can be no war:' The unique horror of World War I, in which there is constant shelling and mOre than a few mjssions with very high casualty rates, is hard to comprehend ill the modern world where in we can see whole wars fought on television and won during commercial breaks. With an absolutely perfect location. the snow, the trenches. and the bombings are brought back to horrid reality. Fear and disparity play on the faces of the soldiers, perfectly portrayed throughout the film. The sense of loss and a desire for home are made palpable by the end where, for getting so close to the enemy, soldiers are denied the chance to see their families before headi.n.g to a new front. If "Joyeux Noel" suffers from anything it is a slow, plodding, pace. To get the audience in touch with the soldiers, there is a great effort made to focus on little things and minor moments that anyone could relate roo And. while this is effective, it forces the film to crawl at times. The three artists who were featured during the Senior Art Show were Jamison Bell, William Hinca. and Michael Rash. All three of them had a number of works on display, to the point where 55 total items were on di play for the public to look at. Bell howcased numerous works that were completed through the proces of printmakmg. Hinca displayed many design that used graphic artistry, and Rash had an abunaance of illustrations on di play. In addition to their art work, aJJ three artists had statements on display for the public to view, which gave an insight into v,.hat types of characteristics are prt:sent in their works as well a revealing a bit about themselves. The Rangers returned with two hard fought losses and a conference record of 1-3 (6-4 overall). The team suffered a loss of 66-62 to the Cougars of SIU Edwardsville on Thursday night, Dec. and another defeat of 82-72 to the Hawks of Quincy University on Saturday afternoon, Dec. The Rangers led until late in both games. Good all-around effort by both teams had Thursday's game against SIU-Edwardsville tied at the end of the first half .. As a team, the Rangers made five three-pointers • and shot 45.2 percent from the field in the first half. Brad Ferstenou and Cory Brezovar both knocked down two jumpers each from long range. The Cougar's matched the hot shooting of the Rangers with a first half percentage of 51.7 from the field. There were six ties and five. lead changes in the first half, with Lavontay Fenderson taking-flight with a powerful slam to tie the game at 34 to end the first half. UW-Parkside's nice shooting continued in the second half. as the Rangers added four more threepointers and shot 42.9 percent from the field. The game' continued to be tight, however, as the lead continued to flip-flop between UWParks ide and Sill-Edwardsville. While attempting 13 more shots from the charity stripe than the Rangers' single second half free throw attempt, the Cougars captured a four-point lead over the Panthers with 3 :08 remaining in the game. Fenderson then hit a threepoint shot to reduce the Cougar's lead to one, making the score 63- 62. A pair of turnovers and missed shots by UW-Parkside allowed SIU-Edwardsville to pull away with the 66-62 victory over the Rangers. Ferstenou led all Rangers with 14 points, while Fenderson and Brezovar both contributed with 13 points in Thursday's difficult contest. UW-Parkside arrived at Quincy University on Saturday, Dec. 9, desiring a win to redeem Thursday's loss. The team found itself in another tense first half of basketball. The Rangers jumped out to an early seven-point lead, making five of their first six shots from the field. . The Rangers shot 43.3 percent from the field for the entire half. Quincy quickly diminished UW-Parkside's lead with their own great shooting, making five of eight froin threepoint range for 62.5 percent. Quincy's Andre Muse finished the first half with a three-pointer to capture the lead for·Quincy; however, La Ventay Fenderson and Kyle Clark's first half points of 12 and II, respectively, kept the Rangers close behind the Hawks at halftime. Quincy University entered the second half by quickly securing an eight-point lead. Good defense then fueled the Rangers, as they went on a 9-0 run to recapture the lead 46-45. Midway through the second half, Parkside began to pull away with a seven-point lead, but poor shooting from the field allowed Quincy to get back into the game. Down "the stretch, the Ranger's 25 percent shooting from long range, along with the 26- point effort from Quincy's Muse, accompanied by his teammate Joel Box and his 25 points and rebounds, caused UW-Parkside to fall to Quincy University in a final of 82-72. Fenderson led all the Rangers with 19 points. Kyle Clark added 15 points, and TyroneDeacon scored 12 in Saturday's contest. The Rangers will now look to regain some momentum against their next four opponents, all of which are non-conference matches. They meet up with the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate _ Athletic Conference on Wednesday, Dec. 13, for their third road game within a week. Their next GLVC competition doesn't come until the Northern Kentucky Norse visit UW-Parkside on Jan. 4 of next year. How Stressed Are You? Certain aromas also can help with reducing stress. such as jasmine. chamomile, and lavender. which scents higbly recommended for producing calming effects. Organize the work area wben studying for a certain subject, and put all other hooks and corresponding materials away while working. Knowing that everything else put away will put the other subjects out of ntind. It is also important to think positively about one's self in relation to what is going on in life. A positive outlook on doing well with individual goals will help reduce stress levels. Skip Twarusz has Porawaromi - heritage, and members of his family have experience working in Native American casinos. Rita Altmeyer is the advisor for Scared Circle on campus. Mike Pawonicun is deeply involved wit.h !'1a~ve American tribes currently residing In Chicago. Twarusz said that the casinos on reservations help tribes immensely from. an economic standpoint, as they provide a means to acquire resources. because, initially, reservations were built in places that were not arable. An example he gave of how much the casinos help tribes get the funds they need to.survive is a tribe in South Dakota that bas tn Ira vel "80 to 100 miles roundtrip just for water," Pawonicutt admitted tbat while casinos help Native American tribes they are hurting them, as well, because tribes are building casinos on their "sacred land." He elaborated on this by saying that some casinos have been built upon the burial grounds of tribes and that the younger members of tribes that elected to have casinos on their reservations are also affected, as they want to work in the casino when they' are old enough to do so, and kids who work in the casinos then have access to drugs and alcohol. Altmeyer is of the opinion that each individual tribe should decide for itself if a casino is right for it due to the various repercussions building one will have on its people. Both women's and men's teams began GLVC competition with victories but followed these wins up with losses on Saturday, Dec. 2, to the visiting Drury Panthers. For the women Rangers. Thursday's game started off hot with a 47-25 first half. The Rangers shot 50 percent from the field and convened six of ] 3 for 46 percent from three-point range. Also, by hitting 70 percent of their free throws, the Rangers . statistically outplayed the Hawks, as Drury shot an overall 38 percent from their half-court and about 56 percent from the foul stripe. Starting guard Ashley Ferguson made her presence felt on the court and the scoreboard with a 25-point effort, 10 of 16 from the field and four of six for three-pointers. Kari Score also contributed in offense and rebounds with 18 points tallied and eight boards pulled down for the game. On that date, he joined the army. Leifheit has had many positive experiences since joining the army. He has become friends with others who have been training with the army and really enjoys the "kick ass" uniforms that the army issued to him, he said. Additionally, he has earned the rank of Specialist. Besides attempting to get people at UW- Parkside to join the army, Leifheit has also been to Gateway Technically College in Racine and Saint Catherine's High School. The reason be is trying to get individuals to join the army is because, he said, it is a "good experience" and it can provide people with a way to pay for college. The follow-up game on Saturday against the Drury Panthers also proved to be a tough contest for the men Rangers, as Drury also rained down heavy with the long- range shot. With a 75 percent mark from three-point range for the Panthers by making nine of 12 attempts, the Rangers couldn't match up with deep range points, only making eight of 24 attempts, four for eacb half. This helped the visiting Panthers post 63 percent in field goals compared to UW- Parkside's 48 percent. However, the Panthers almost let the game slip from their hands, as the Rangers fonght back to within one point as late as 2:46 left in the second half when starting forward La Vontay Fenderson intercepted a Panther pass and broke away into open court to slam dunk the Rangers into a 74-73 Drury over YW- Parkside score. Unfortunately, the Panthers followed up the Rangers' pressure by causing the Rangers to foul them. Drury hit four free throw shots, a lay-up, and another pair of free throws before letting UW- Parkside score again. were in favor of Drury, as they statistically outshot uw- Parkside in field goals, three- pointers, and free throws for the entire game to beat the Rangers 85-71. As for the men Rangers, the Rockhurst Hawks provided a difficult challenge before falling to UW-Parkside. Tbe Hawks were on fire from .beyond the three-point line in tbe first half, as they sank seven of II shots on the Rangers, with their sixth three-pointer coming at 5:22 to break a 24-24 tie. The Rangers Jed early in the first half with as much as a 12-point lead at 11 :56, but they saw it dissipate under the three- point assault of Rockhurst and went into halftime down 30-28. However, the Hawks' game plan backfired in the second half, as they made only one of their eight three- pointers to close out the game. The long-range shot wasn't as kind to the Rangers, as they missed all six of their three- point attempts in the first half and made only one of the fuur attempts in the last half. Rather than rely on the three for points, the Rangers stayed steady with the close-range shot to edge out the Hawks for a tight 60:54 on drawing the hard fouls to get free throw points, the Rangers went almost completely away from the three-point shot. After making four of eight three-pointers in the first half, OW-Parkside couldn't convert a single one of their three long- range attempts in the second half. Instead, the percentages after the first half, the Rangers went on the tough offensive- early in attempting to draw fouls from the visiting Panthers. With winter approaching, many people will experience the common cold. The common cold is a mild viral infection that affects the nose and respiratory passages. At least half of all colds are caused by rhinoviruses. Rhinoviruses are the most common viral-infective agents in humans. They consist of single-stranded. non-enveloped viruses that are often associated with bronchitis. Due to the vast number of different viruses that cause the common cold, a vaccine has not been developed. Adults average two to three colds per year, while children average six tc 10, depending on age and exposure. Common symptoms of the common cold include runnylstuffy nose, sneezing, itchy/sore throat, cough, congestion, and discharge from the nose and throat. High fever is not a regular symptom of the common cold. According to www.mayoclinic. com, the best way to avojd getting a cold is reduce the risk of spreading germs. People should wash hands thoroughly and vigorously for at least 15 seconds to decrease germ production. It is also considerate to always sneeze and csugh into tissues. Thi s can decrease the risk of otber people inhaling the virus. Also, do not share glasses or utensils with affected persons. This can eliminate potential risks of spreading the virus, With more developing theories and strategies, there are many other methods that are believed to prevent getting the cold virus. Some common treatments for the cold include pain relievers, decongeslaDt nasal sprays. and cough syrups. 1bere are also mllby home remedies that may help ClIIIl or soothe the c~mon cold. Examples are gurglingwater-diluted hydrogen peroxide to soothe the throat, taking Echinacea to help boost the immune system, and breathing a steam vaporizer to help quiet a cough. The common cold may be incurable, but there are things that can be done to help those affected to feel better. Avoiding alcohol, caffeine, and cigarettes is a good idea, because they all cause dehydration. Always make sure to stay hydrated with water.juice, or tea. Make sure to get plenty of rest; this can help the body fight off the cold virus quicker. Jacobs Entertains with Heritage BY D. WHITE white041@uwp.edu Singer and songwriter Michael Jacobs entertained a small crowd in Main Place on Nov. 27. Sacred Circle president Robert Andersen said they were happy they had the opportunity to bring Jacobs back to UW-Parkside. "People in Sacred Circle are fans, he said." Andersen said Jacobs' songs are about issues that can help people. "His songs let people know they are not alone," he said. While Jacobs switched from performing with the flute to playing '::?~~!\lIl his guitar, he said he would - now start his love segment of songs. He said he wrote "Home to me" because he thought too many love songs have been written about heartbreak. He also said he wanted a song to which be and his fiance could listen together. Jacobs captivated the crowd by gently playing his guitar and singing lyrics like "you light my darkness" and "you are what no one else can be to me, home to PHOTO BY DAN TORKlLSEN me," Some of Jacobs's songs are about love, hope, heartache. and Native American issues. "People can get whatever they need from my songs," said Jacobs. Jacobs said be has performed with two full-time bands and was with a rock band from 1988-1994. He said he was raised in a state school in Minnesota and did not grow up knowing he was Native American, like many Native Americans today. "It was common for Native Americans to be taking away fromtheir families," he said. Jacobs said he discovered he was Native American accidentally, while attending a Native American powwow. He said his search for his heritage started 14 years ago, and he put his music on hold to examine his heritage. He has since found that his heritage is rooted in the Cherokee nation in Oklahoma. He said he started performing about his beritage and writing songs about Native America Life in 2001. He is currently working on his fourth CD and has received awards from the Native America Music Awards for some of his other CD's.
