The riots killed 22 people; included in that total were a baby boy that was burned to death in a garage and a paramilitary officer. China's government is blaming the riots and uprisings on a small minority of Tibetians, and that the violence in no way reflects the entire region's feelings of its rule. The Chinese government claims that it is being undermined and disestablished before the Olympic games can be held there. The Communist leaders of China have gone on to say that the Dalai Lama planned allacks with "the aid of violent Uighur ~eparatist groups seeking an independent East Turkestan for their largely Muslim people in the northwestern Xinjiang region of China." There are also claims that he is "scheming to take the Beijing Olympics hostage [0 force the Chinese Government to make concessions to Tibetan independence." I feel like I've learned so much in just a few weeks, and I know in the next two years I will only learn more. I think the staff has learned a lot this semester, as well, though I obviously can't tell yoo what they've learned. On page 4 of this issue, you'll find a budget breakdown for Parkside. This was given 'to us by PSGA, and I had to cut it down to just the past few years of breakdowns. The original document was much larger, however, we just didn't have space for everything. However, it is important to recognize that in times of crisis, people will respond in ways we may not have considered." With this in mind. the Commission made certain suggestions to help while a crisis is going on at any of the campuses. The Commission suggested that all 26 campuses should decide as part of their crisis planning what mechanisms will be used for information sharing and crisis updates during an actual crisis. They also suggested that the constituents should be informed in advance of where to find the crisis information. The Commission also suggested that the UW System should require annual reviews of campus crisis plans and continuity of operations plans and' revision. Plans from every campus should be filed with the System office for the purpose of ensuring existence and completeness. All campuses should train personnel involved in the crisis plan about their roles and responsibilities in the plan. All campuses should test the plan at least once annually. The Commission felt that all campuses should have University Police properly trained, equipped and armed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so that they may respond to emergencies including active killers. As of right now that decision is up to the Chancellors at every University. Also, not all Universities have University Police; three have campus security instead of University Police. The University of Wisconsin-Parks ide currently has University Police armed to national standards, meaning that they can carry and operate a handgun and long gun. Not all campuses have this; The University of Wisconsin - LaCrosse has sworn law enforcement officers (meeting all standards, training and certifications of the State of Wisconsin for Police) but are only armed with handguns. The schools that don't allow their police to carry long guns say that is due to their Chancellor's opposition "We've got issues" yare solely ~ble for il$ cdllorial policy _nd ecmenr, to them. The Commission said in its report that it understands that the cost of police officers is greater than security officers and that training is expensive, but the Commission said that it believes the financial investment is minimal to the benefit it will bring. The Commission stated that closing a campus is just unreasonable because of the size of the Universities. The only way of closing a campus is to cancel classes and all campus events/programs. There is no way "locking down" all buildings in a campus could do more harm then good in certain situations. The ability to completely ecure a campus would be a significant undertaking requiring ignificant police support for most campuses are connected to their broader community, because of the city streets that run throughout campus. Update on UWp·TV ROBERT ROSATI robertrosati@hobnall,com This semester many people have been wondering if UWP-TV was still in existence because there have been no new episodes uploaded to their YouTube account. This semester UWP-TV has shifted their f~us from producing new episode to by purchasing equipment and recruiting new members to their organization. The Chief Executive Officer of UWP- TV, Henry Gaskins, said "We looked at some of what we did last semester, and we thought it was a pretty good base. But now we're focusing on getting more students who want to do this sort ofthing and having the equipment necessary for them to usc." On Mon. March 10. UWP- TV had their request for $2,250 approved by the Student Organization Council (SOC). A portion of the money was spent on a Canon GL2 digital video camera, a tripod, a camera case, and lights among other items. Additionally, UWP-TV is spending money from their private account to purchase other equipment, uch as wireless handheld microphones. "Whil the new equipment is great for UWP-TV, recruitment has been more challenging," said Gaskins. "Students are busy, and working with a media organization on campus is 'certainly a time commitment ." UWP-TV is in the midst of planning a puhlicity drive that will take place in April. with their goals being to recruit students who are interested in ommunication, digital arts, marketing. as well as student leadership. While allowing people to be unique individuals, it is necessary to check in about disturbing behaviors to maintain community safety. By sharing information consistently and looking for behavioral patterns, the campus community can determine how to react to a wide variety of situations. Odd, bizarre, frightening, alarming and criminal behavior should be reported using a formal process to record the infonnation, as well as a procedure to govern how situations should be handled. To educate the campus community about the warning signs related to violent behavior, information will be provided through a variety of communication channels, including printed information, web-based resources, e-mail updates and " interpersonal gatherings. Everyone should be aware of how and where to report strange behaviors and how and when to refer someone to counseling. Among those who are running for office is Thorn Bartek, who is running for the position of Alderman in the 3'" District of Kenosha, who graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in 2007 with a degree in Political Science. Even though the election on the first of Apr. is equally important as the upcoming presidential election, Bartek believes it hasn't received the same amount of attention because, "this has to deal with us getting involved as citizens in government, in the issues that are important to us. I think also too that we can do a better job as a government entity for the city in just advertising the fact that there's elections coming up, bur unless you read the paper everyday, unless you follow through with the issues everyday it would be easy for it to fall off the radar ... there was a huge tum out at the primary election actually because Hilary Clinton and Barak Obama and the republicans had their candidates on the ballot so a lot of people carne out for that. but now iI'S falling through,". Bartek is running against a long time incumbent for the position of Alderman in the 3'" District of Kenosha. Bartek believes that the education he received at Parkside has prepared him for this challenge. '1 think the instructors in the classes that I've taken here have really helped. Dr. Anne Gumack teaches a class called Midterm Elections which as a requirement for the course we had to get involved with a campaign and follow through with the campaign and volunteering with that and helping the organization out, I think that helped me understand bow campaigns work." Additionally, a number of hooks he read for the class helped him understand how campaigns came into existence as well as some of the challenges that candidates faced while challenging incumbents. It throws off our meeting schedule; it throws off the deadline schedule. It can even throw off our circulation numbers. if the break is longer than a week. We decided to not put out an issue over spring break, so as a result some of the information in this issue is, perhaps, a bit outdated. If we had put out an issue over break, there probably wouldn't have been much in the way of articles. It's kind of a trade-off. As you may know, our next issue comes out on April Fool's Day. We are attempting to collect articles in order to run a humorl satire section in that issue, and you all are more than welcome to submit funny stories, illustrations, etc. We ask that you keep the pieces appropriate--think along the lines of what you would find in a PG-13 movie. No excessive nudity, no excessive swearing. etc. In order to be considered for publication, your piece must include your first and last name and your email. The survey is designed to help the administration improve the undergraduate students' experience. The idea is to understand the difference between how the college experience is viewed from freshmen and seniors perspectives. As freshmen, students may enter college with preconceived notions on what their experience will be like. As seniors, students have engaged in activities that make them more knowledgeable about the workings of the university atmosphere. The expectations and specifics change. This survey will gauge how far apart the classes are in their perception of student engagement and how Parkside compares to other schools of the same type across the nation. Parkside last took part in the NSSE in 2006. Out of five target categories, freshmen rated Parkside lower than seniors in four. the exception being Supportive Campus Environment. In all five categories, both freshmen and seniors rated Parkside lower than the national average. The newest trend in the online travel industry is the movement toward a meta riJtj{fel that separates looking and booking services. Companies like Kayak and Sidestep, which are fairly light on technology, allow users to sort and filter through travel options before booking with a different agency. These companies make their profits through advertising, and steal the "first click" from online travel services that actually sell travel packages. Unlike these searching sites, Web sites hosted directly by suppliers of airfare and lodging link users directly to the source of the services desired. To keep up with these developments, Orbitz is moving beyond its core strengths of searching, booking and service. They are looking to include travel inspiration, res ear c h • collaboration and even sharing among travelers. . According to Sivley, disruptive technologies cause much of the growth that occurs in a field of business. To explain the concept of a disruptive technology. he used the example of how mini-mills overtook the steel industry in the 1970's by specializing in specific grades of steel and gradually improving the quality of their product while reducing overhead costs. He then noted that the way online travel agencies have take__ tlIe _1~0&1l similar model. He also discussed how "incumbent" businesses can still _om to keep up with technology if they create separate organizations outside of their main business to research and implement new technologies. This was the case with both Orbitz, which was purchased by travel agency Cendant, as well as HP, which created an outside organization to develop ink jet printers. Now statistics show that the top e-commerce category is travel, which is more than three times larger than any other segment of online purchases. As the first online travel agency, OrbJtz was founded In 1999 by five of the lop airlines. In 2001, Orbitz was also the first online travel site to use a matrix 00 its -Website. "We invented the matrix," said Sivley. "That was one of the things that really changed online booking and made Orbitz successful." Orbitz has stayed ahead of the curve and still maintains a strong status as the second largest online site, based upon the gross income earned from travel bookings, Orbitz now includes other related sites, including Cheap TIckets, E-bookers, Rates to Go, and Orbitz for Business, Employing 1700 employees and outsourcing 1700 more jobs in customer service and technology to both foreign and domestic workers, Orbitz records revenues of $6 billion. Approximately 80 percent of that revenue comes from sales within the U.S. and 20 percent comes from foreign sales. To current UW-Parkside students. Sivley offers this advice: take educated risks, but have a plan and an exit strategy. When a decision does not work out as planned. he suggests that, "you can't get so locked into the plan that you are afraid to change your choices," Throughout much of his career, Sivley look risks that paid off, but he would not have taken them if he didn't know the possible downfalls going into the situation. For example, after graduating from UW-Parkside in 1980. Sivley decided to apply at Accenture, a large accounting finn, which offered him great value through training, but not necessarily through the compensation he received. Sivley shared how he carne ta apply for the job through a bet he made with a fellow student from UW-Parkside, who was also an accounting major, "We were going to apply to the biggest accounting firm A question of McCoin's ethics MOLLIE EGAN tree_fingers99@yahoo.com On Feb. 20, the "New York Times" newspaper came out with a story about John McCain possibly showing favoritism for a female lobbyist, Vicki Iseman, and the companies she represents. The article mentions that the communications company she represents contributed tens of thousands of dollars to McCain campaigns. The article says that McCain advisors were worried at one point that the relationship with Ms. Iseman was romantic, so they took steps to intervene with how much McCain saw the lobbyist. The New York Times reported that a former campaign adviser described being instructed to keep Ms. Iseman away from McCain at public events. McCain urged the Federal Communications Commission to uphold laws that would help the companies that Ms. Iseman represents in 1998 and 1999. The article also states that McCain introduced a bill to create tax incentives for minority ownership of stations; Ms. Iseman represented several businesses seeking such a program. The New YorkTImes also wrote in the article that McCain tried twice to advance legislation that would permit a company to control television stations in overlapping markets, an important issue for one of Ms. Iseman's representatives. McCain released a statement to the New York Times denying all reports that he has done this, and says that it's a shame that the New York Times has lowered its standards to engage in a hit and run smear campaign. Ms. Iseman also denies all reports. McCain's friends told the New York TImes that they dismiss questions about McCain's ties to lobbyists, arguing that he has too much integrity to let such personal connections influence him. Many people try to avoid the flu bug by getting a flu 'hot, and that usually helps them steer clear of the virus. Unfortunately, this year's batch of shots only cover about forty percent of the raging viruses out out there, leaving the majority free to do their dirty work with the human body. The main culprit is some thunder from down under: a strain of flu virus known as Brisbane/Ill. The Australian strain was only discovered recently this winter and was not able to be "We've got issues" onpoge added to the flu shot cocktail. It can take up to eight months to make a [lu vaccine. and when something sneaks its way in after or near the end of its completion, not much can be done. Worse yet. Brisbanefl 0 is exceedingly tough to get growing in a lab. However. there is hope as a virus that is very similar La the Australian dynamo can be more easily cultured and therefore a vaccine to that strain would also be useful against Brisbane/IO. The flu viruses are grown in chicken eggs and then ~accines are derived from those samples. Vaccines protect against three types of viruses: two from the more severe Type A flu and one from the milder Type B. As the flu virus is highly adaptive, no vaccine is completely effective, but this year's was particularly ineffective. "I'm really really glad that we have the search committee composition that we have, that everyone on that committee has a nice, wide overview ami concern for UW-Parkside as a whole," said Evans. "Even when they disagree about particular things, they're always very very courteous and respectful in those disagreements and aren't focusing on petty agendas." As head of the committee, Evans is keeping track of all the paperwork involved, formally presenting the five candidates to the Board of Regents, and writing a report at the conclusion of the search process. It is also Evans' responsibility to act as the contact person between the committee, the Board of Regents and EFL Associates, a search finn that focuses on higher education. "They [EFL Associates] specialize in finding people in higher. education who are looking for better jobs, so they have a whole slew of contacts and connections and they will be posting ads on our behalf in lots of publications that are read by people in higher ed [sic]," said Evans. To reach the goal of five candidates, Evans explained that the committee will start with a slightly larger gronp, approximately a dozen, and narrow it down from there. When the time to decide draws near, the chosen dozen will stay at an off-campus location, (such as a hotel near an airport) so they can be easily flown in, and each individual will be brought to campus for a series of interviews. A special Board of Regents Committee, led by UW-Parkside alumnus Regent Mike Falbo, will then select one of the five candidates to be the university's next chancellor. Kazmierczak killed 5 people and wounded 15 people before he turned the gun on himself. Kazmierczak was currently enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. Kazmierczak was a graduate student in sociology at Northern 1l1inois as recently as spring 2007. but was not currently enrolled at the school. He had no record or police contact or arrest record while attending the university. NIU President John Peters said on Friday ABC's "Good Morning America" that there was no note of threat that he was aware of. Peters said that by all accounts that the school can tell right now, Kazmierczak was u very good student that the professors thought well of. Officials said that there was no known motive for Kazmierczak 10 shoot the people at NIU. Kazmierczak's girlfriend. Jessica Bary. told CNN that he was taking three drugs prescribed for him by his psychiatrist. Baty said that Kazmierczak was taking Xanax. used to treat anxiety, Arnbien. a sleep agent, and Prozac for depression. Baty said that Kazmierczak stopped laking Prozac three weeks before the Valentine'S Day rampage on the NIU campus. Kazmierczak told her that he stopped taking the anti-depressant "because it made him feel like a zombie:' Bary told CNN that during their two-year courtship, she had never seen him display violent rendencies and she expressed bewilderment over the cause of the rampage. DO nrnJ - Things are moving right along here at The Ranger News. losh Aulozzi and Robert Rosati have been doing a great job covering PSGA so far, and [ encourage them to keep up the great work. As I mentioned last week. we will be trying new ways to cover PSGA more in-depth. to get you all the information we can. At the same lime. we've been doing some reorganizing. The reporters were divided up into sections: three reporters will be regularly covering news stories, a few will regularly be covering sports stories, and so on. Illustrators and photographers also get assignments, and they are generally paired up with a reporter in an effort to make the photos or illustrations more relevant to the stories. The staff are more than welcome to do additional pieces, however, their main assignment must be completed first. The point of this reorganization is to create consistency, both within our office and within the paper. There are a few issues we have yet to resolve, however. We haven't been delivering papers to Tallent Hall or the SAC on a regular basis, and we are going to work to fix this as soon as possible. A lot of people may be missing out on the news simply because we haven't been consistent with our distribution. The other issue is making Sure deadlines are met. As of late, there has been a handful of staff that haven't been meeting deadline and didn't mention it to anyon; prior to deadline. Not only is this unprofessional, it reflects poorly on those particular people (and eventually the organization as a Whole). We are definitely going to work on correcting this, even if it means some pieces don't get into the paper because of people missing deadlines for no reason. There are two categories eligible for prizes. The first is the individual classification. Individuals can win a gift certificate for $50 to an area restaurant and will get to have the "Golden Ladle", the traveling trophy. in their possession for the next year. Each year the previous year's winner in this category is also a judge, along with Aramark's director Angela Jensen and head chef Joseph Minneci. Last year's winner was student Wendell Hill. Hill was entered by accident as students are not allowed to participate in the cooking portion of the event for safety reasons. He still took his place as a judge for the 2008 contest This year's winner isTim Knautz, who won for his "Who Needs Mcat?]?" chili. Kwiatkowski won the group award for the Student Activities office in 2007. They will be tough to beat next year. Walking among the contestants, many were running out of chili in record time. By 12:15, the "Wisconsin Blizzard," "Darnngoodchili," and "Uncle Louis Supreme" made by Pat McGuire were empty. This demonstrates a need for more entrants in next year's cook-off. The goal of the organization is to serve the university as well as the surrounding community in the areas of strategic marketing and event promotion. The PAMA Professional Committee provides members with access to networking opportunities with marketing executives, special scholarships and support in career planning in the business field. PAMA also' helps you to meet other business students and become a memberoftheAmerican Marketing Association. Currently, PAMA has a Campaign underway to promote Parkside's men and women basketball teams. The slogan is "MEAN GREEN". PAMA set up a website (www.catchmeangreen. com) describing a masked person running around the school with a shirt on that says "MEAN GREEN". On this website it also says that the police are looking for him because has been disturbing the school with making green snow, disgusting banners, t-shirt cannons and many other things. PAMA wants the school to help catch this "MEAN GREEN" masked person. By catching this person, there are t-shirts being sold that say "MEAN GREEN" that everyone can buy. If yOU buy the t-shirt then go to a women or men's basketball game, there will be a raffle for $50. The raffle ticket is the t-shirt that you must ear to the game to collect the money. PAMA is raffling up to $600. The money will continue to double until someone wins, then it will start back at $50. On the website there is a scbedule for all the games that PAMA will be raffling off the money. The next game will be Feb. 28 at both men's and the women's basketball games. The PAMA board is an active board is an active group of students dedicated to the profession of marketing. Currently they have 20 student members, but are always looking for more. Science Ni ht wit John Ertl RYAN MONTROSS Ryanmo 1988@sbcglobal.nel Science Night 'CSI Wisconsin' was held in Greenquist 103 from 7 pm to approximately 8:30 pm on Feb. 13. John Ertl, who graduated from high school in 1980, received a BS in Chemistry/ Life Sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in 1984. Eight years later, he established a MS in Applied Molecular Biology. John Ertl is an employee of the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory in Madison, where he looks at the physical aspect of evidence. Ertl has had experience with research labs at the University of Wisconsin -Parkside and the University ofTexas MDAnderson Cancer Center. When referring to the location ot the Cancer Center. Ertl mentioned the documentation of the evidence which includes note taking. photographs, and sketches. He talked about a vehicle which looked similar to an ambulance; describing Madison 's vehicle" painted yellow so it's bright to see. We also have lights and no sirens because we are in odd places at odd times." Ertl explained that evidence is either delivered to the lab by officers or shipped or mailed by UPS. The evidence usually comes to the lab in a brown paper bag with rcd sealant tape. Typcs of evidence include: drugs. toxicology, fingerprints. photography, DNA, documents, firearms. trace or arson. and blood splatter patterns. He discussed the two sources of DNA: The first source of DNA is the kind you find at a crime scene, the second source is found from convicted offenders. John then talked about the various sources of DNA which includes hair, teeth, bone, tissue, and skin cells, and bodily fluids. After explaining why the means employed by the US in Iraq do not correlate with the end of helping the Iraqi people, Harak then suggested that there might be some other end that is served by these means: oil. To argue this, Harak made several points. The following are a few examples. First, he said that Iraq's Ministry of Oil building was ueither attacked nor damaged despite the rest of Baghdad's buildings suffering heavy damage and looting. He hinted that he believed that this was not simply a coincidence. He also pointed out that Iraq's oil wells .were seized before any city or village was taken. On top of this, he cited Executive Order l3303-an Executive Order signed by George W. Bush that provides legal immunity for US oil companies operating in Iraq-and Coalition Provisional Authority Order Number 39- which allows for 100 percent foreign ownership of economic sectors in Iraq - as examples of possible hidden US interests in Iraq. of US troops, Harak also sited a 2007 poll of Iraqis that found that 53 percent were of the belief that the US invasion was wrong; 78 percent that felt the US forces should leave; and 62 percent that felt they were better off under Saddam 'Hussein. Further, Harak pointed out that Kadhim al-Jubouri-the famous man who took a sledge hammer .to the statue of Saddam Hussein on April 9, 2003-had this to say in March 2007: "J really regret bringing down the statue. The Americans are worse than the dictatorship. Every day is worse than the previous day." As an illustration of some of the means-end reasoning suggested by the US military about its purpose in Iraq, Mr. Harak provided the following statement made by US Lt. Col. Nathan Sassaman to a New York Times reporter in December 2003: "With a heavy dose of fear and violence, and a lot of money for projects, I think we can convince these people that we are here to help them." Mr. Harak, of course, argued that fear and violence are not the means with which one release, the ICRC stated: "Cluster munitions have had a borrific impact on civilians in most of the conflicts in which they bave been used, including those in Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan and Laos." It is also a feature of cluster bombs that at least five percent (or as many as twenty percent) of those dropped fail to detonate after they hit tbe ground. These unexploded cluster bombs, which bappen to be painted a similar color yellow to that of food packets also dropped in the area, unfortunately claim many more victims by exploding in the hands of curious or unaware civilians well after they were deployed. After explaining the nature of cluster munitions and their use in Iraq, Harak asked the audience to consider whether the use of these weapons serve to further tbe stated end of belping the people of Iraq. Mr. Harak then carried his talk into the area of depleted uranium (DO) and its use as a type of munitions for tbe US military. DU is a very dense material that is a byproduct of both nuclear weapons production and spent rods from nuclear reactors. DU exists by the hundreds of tbousands of tons in the US and bas the unfortunate side-effect of being radioactive. Many of its properties make it an ideal choice for bullets and other forms of ammunition, and tbe US military has utilized DU weaponry for its war against Iraq. Mr. Harak pointed out tbat the radioactive properties of DU are extremely dangerous for Iraqis and Americans alike. In fact, he said that reproductive defects have exploded in Southern Iraq since DU weapons were used there. Once again, Mr. Harak bad a number of photos on hand to illustrate the gross distortions and defects arising in Iraq and then posed the question: Do these means- the dumping of bazardous radioaeti ve material into Iraq - serve the end of helping the Iraqi people? According to Harak, the Iraqi people themselves do not feel that the means employed by the US are helping them either. In Spring of 1968, the dasses werestill held on the Racine and Kenosha Center campuses. There were 25 undergraduate degrees offered with few concentrations; now there are five additional degrees available with thirteen concentr3tions and fifteen other certificate programs. Many majorsoffered are the same today as they were in 1968, however there are a few that have been eliminated, Iike Engineering Science (Technology) and Labor Economics. Though Engineering Technology isno longer offered as amajorhere, you can take Software Engineering. With reluctance the university complied, offering a Master's degree in Business Administration, and allowing room for growth in research. In 1968, the total number of credits and the OPA scale, completion of 9 credits of natural sciences and foreign language requirements were the same as they are today. Originally all students were required to take a course called The American Language, as well as a Division Seminar in an area of study other than· the student's major. Today we require an additional 3 three credits in humanities and social sciences, and specify that students take at least 36 credits of upper level classes, 300 and above in Sometimes classes have been eliminated to meet the changes in society. Juno deals with teen pregnancy, which is a very sensitive issue. Morality does play into the story, but not in such a way that any real judgment is passed on the characters. Teenage pregnancy happens and people have to deal with it. Juno experiments with her best friend, and ends up becoming pregnant at sixteen. She is a very inteUigent and outspoken young lady. lending the character credibility. Juno knows she won't be able to raise the baby correctly at her age and sets out to find suitable adoptive parents for it. It paints the picture of a girl who has something unplanned happen 10 her, but is smart enough to do her best to make sure things tum out the best they can. It neither admonishes or glorifies what Juno does, it just shows how one girl deals with her circumstances. With such a controversial topic, the film still has a humorous streak to it. The dialog is very clever and endearing. Juno is never at a loss for words and always has a quip. The movie remains light and entertaining, even though it seems like it could become a bit of a downer. It is a very uplifting film and casts a different light on a touchy subject. Juno shows that teenagers may nOI be the impulsive. foolish almost adults that people make Ihem out to be. By being a fun movie and not beating the audience over the head with any lessons, the audience is treated to a slice of life story. Although 1wish my conversations were f lied with such wit and pop culture references, but life is always better in the movies, even for pregnant teenagers. ULMER U1merOOO@uwp.edu Can artistic inspiration be confined to an 18" x 18" square? This feat has been accomplished at least 100 times in the University of Wisconsin-Parkside's 2pl National Small Print Exhibition. Running from Jan. 20 through Feb. 21, the art exhibit, currently housed in the Communication Arts Gallery, features works with no dimension exceeding eighteen inches. Juror Karla Hackenmiller, chair of the Art Department at the University of Ohio. sorted through the nearly one thousand works submitted to select the artwork now on display. A printmaker herself, Hackenmil1er appreciates the challenge of working in smaller dimensions. "When looking at prints of small size, one is able to focus on the smallest details as well as to take in the entire image all at once," said HackenmiUer, as quoted in the exhibition catalog. "This visual interplay is an exciting exchange of technical and conceptual information." In her selections, Hackenmiller worked to include a wide variety of styles and subjects. The diversity of the prints can be seen in the artists' use of black and white or color, traditional portraits and sketches or modern lines, surrealistic scenes, and metallic collages. Without a frame, each piece stands alone under ea thin pane of glass. The exceptions to this set-up are a few small, three- dimensional booklets. which are attached to the wall without a glass covering. Although Hackenmiller claims to have had no theme in mind with her selections, there appears to be a common element to all of the art on one wall of the gallery. Walking in from the East entrance, the wall to the right exhibits a collection of pieces depicting people and animals. Many of the other prints in the exhibition are abstract or not as well defined as these pieces. Here, the subjects can be easily identified. One piece, entitled "Smack My Bitch Up" portrays an abused woman hunching over a desk as her torturer Jeans back in his easy chair, sipping his beer. The drama in this scene is ev.ident and masterfully crafted by artist Richard Peterson from Visalia, California. Some of the animals included in this area include a constellation-studded dog in "Portrait of the Artist's Dog, Zuzu, Canis Major II" by Mark Sisson from Stillwater, Oklahoma; and a whale with a city riding on its back in "lona 's Ark: tbe Leviathan Ascendent" by Christopher Ganz from Fort Wayne, Indiana. One artist, Andrew Kosten from Visalia, California, even depicts a centaur, a half-men half-horse creature, in «They Came from the Country." In its first year, 1987, the Nationa! Small Print EXhibition featured fifty-five artists, including Fred Hagstrom, Wayne Kimball, Brian Paulsen and Robert Schwieger. All four of these artists are featured again this year, each with a new take on small-dimension works. ''This exhibition is certainly a longstanding, important survey of contemporary printmaking that consistently garners wide attention from professionals. viewers 811d supporters of the arts," said Hackenmiller, as quoted in the exhibition catalog. Do something with The Ranger News. 8 February 12, 2008 The Ranger News Comic spotlight: Lovebunny & Mr. Hell ALEX SCHULTZ maulmai!@yahoo,com Lovebunny & Mr. Hell from Devil's Due Press is the story of Lovebunny, a super cute, yet super ditsy superheroine that acquires a pet/roommate in the form of a skull-faced, tentacled demon when she breaks up a Satanic ritual in someone's basement. Seems like a completely reasonable plot to me. The story is a parody of the superhero genre as the reader is presented with superheroes that have very human characteristics and failings. At one point in the story, there is a convention being held to select a new member for a super team. We find out that some superheroes are super skirt chasers and Lovebunny's own insecurities come up when comparing her self to acurvacious alien android. She even gets Je furious that they would consider hiring an alien robot and makes the remark, "like she even has bills to pay". Lovebunny is just not at a great place in her life: she feels responsible for the death of the superhero she used to be the sidekick for, she's having trouble making ends meet, and on top of that she mortally injures her pet rabbit, Mr- Hoppy. That is until she meets a giant demon, which she so loving names "Mr. Hell", It becomes a surrogate pet and sort of aroommate to her, and the big guy has developed a crush on her, although it never actually says anything as it only makes screeches and groans. What ensues, is crazy odd couple style interactions such as teaching Mr. Hell to use a toilet, brush its teeth, and not eat people. The story is an interesting take on the boy and dog story, except in this case it is super girl and demon. The el of denial MICHAEL RIEDLINGER mriedlinger@dorkgasm.com Romantic Adventure Comedy is not a new genre of film; it's just a difficult one to pull off successfully. The 1980's had a few that worked well, (i.e. Romancing the Stone) hut plenty more that were ju~t ga.rbage. Fool's Gold is more likely to fit in with this latter batch of films than anything else, except that I don't know we can truly apply the comedy portion of that description. The film tries to be funny, exciting, andtouching. but cannot seem to get the chemistry right and falls short of the mark. The story follows Benjamin Finnegan (Matthew McConaughey) as he attempts to track down The Queen's Dowry, a sunken Spanish treasure lost somewhere in the Caribbean. Sadly, the treasure becomes a more interesting character than the two-dimensional cast almost from its first mention. The treasure, by the way, is fictional, even though I'm sure there are plenty of lost treasures in that part of the world they could have used if they wanted to, But I digress, because that is the least of this film's problems. art style is typical comic hook style: Lovehunny is a buxom hlond and her costume looks like a cross between a cheer leading uniform and a Playboy bunny. Mr. Hell is rather amorphous, but usually has a skull face and tentacles. The two clash so much that it creates a opposites attract dynamic. The Savage Dragon even makes a guest appearance in one of the stories. The stories were originally produced as one shots. but the version that I read is a black and white digest that collected all of them and added some bonus art. This book is a light, fun look at a superheroine's everyday life and how she deals with an otherworldly housemate. Sharing spaces with someone with a very different way of doing things is something everyone can relate to, especially. if you live in the dorms. Finnegan's wife Tess (Kate Hudson) divorces him in the first fifteen minutes of the film, setting up the requisite "boy-gets-girl- hack" plot that will drive this film ... exceptthal it doesn't. We get a few gushing moments about how good Finnegan is in bed from Tess, and she really doesn't say much else about him to convince us thatshe is a woman in love. but frustrated, and that the divorce was a mistake. Mayhe it's a lack of romantic chemistry; Finnegan touches the heiress, Gemma (Alexis Dziena), with much more promise of sex than he ever does Tess. Whatever the reason, I just couldn't get into the love story, so I tried to focus on the comedy and the action. Comedy was in short supply, as] mentioned before, and quickly came to rely on Jessica Simpson-esque moments from the heiress. Note to screenwriters John Claflin, Daniel Zelman and Aody Tennant (who also directed): what is funny on reality TV is less so when it's scripted. Gemma is essentially reduced to a one-note punch line with a too- skinny body. When a sword lands squarely, and phallicIy, between her way-to-wide-stretched legs, you know she has gone from character to set dressing. That left me with action. The villains in this tripe-fest are appropriately cartoony, hut disappointingly all black as well. Big Bunny (Kevin Hart) and his two sidekicks (Brian Hooks and Malcolm-Jamal Warner) are the epitome of every rap or reggae stereotype committed to film. They, of course, want the treasure themselves and aren't afraid to kill people to gel it. They suck at killing anyone but themselves, however, but that's not the point. We should fear their villainy because they are black, or so it would seem. They are after the treasure because they are greedy bastards, and, well, no that's the only reason. It turnsinto a raceto see who can find the treasure first, except that Finnegan and Tess are the only ones following clues or doing anything really, come to think of it. The bad guys show up from time to time and fail to kill the protagonists and, in the end, everyone lives happily ever after. Avoid the Fool's Gold until you can rent it cheap. Even at "Early Bird" pricing, I felt like I wasted my time and money. Now, if Douglas, Turner, and De Vito get hack together, maybe they can show us how to do this kind of film right again, but until then, I'm going to go back to dreading the inevitable release of something with the words "Crystal Skull" in the title. Sometimes my opinions are met with hostility, but have. on occasion, been met by receptive parties that are willing to discuss the complaint and point to solutions. I am writing to follow up on one of these successful encounters. Last semester, I hurled a complaint at our university's Police Department for not assisting me in removing my car from a snow-filled lot. Upon issuing the complaint, ] was responded to immediately by the interim Police Chief, James P. Heller, and we were able tt>set up a time to meet face-to-face and discuss my dilemma. I found Chief Heller to be extremely open and willing to listen and discuss, and I really recommend folks get the chance to meet rum ~ he's a very nice guy! He was, however, very concerned with my complaint, but did find his hands tied in the situation. We have since met again, and I am happy to repert that I have found these meetings very helpful in developing my understanding of the department's services. Overall, the UW-System campus police departments generally don't assist in pushing cars from the snow; though, a couple campuses leave it to the discretion of the officer. Our campus, however, has had officers injured doing this in past years, so it has become a worker's safety issue that was addressed by campus risk management. 1 can respect that. They will, in fact, lend a hand in moving vehicles if it is an emergency situation, which is good to know! So if you are in an emergency situation, please do call the police. This past Wednesday afternoon at the height of the snowstorm, Chief HeUer and Officer Bergendahl respended to the Union Lot where a couple of food service employees were stuck in the snow. Due to the seriousness of the weather conditions, they helped push these employees free so they could go home. If your car is incapacitated in a-non-emergency situation. you may call Facilities Management during normal business hours and if a grounds- crew member is available, they may be able to respond and assist. There are, however. a number of resources that the UW-Parkside police department will offer, and it could be really easy to take these for granted. For example, our police will assist in jump-starting cars and lockouts, but UW-Parkside is only one out of five UW-campuses that provide this service - and UW- Superior charges $20! We are one of two campuses that will provide air to tires! Now get this, we are the only campus that will provide you with gas if you run dry! So, they might not always be able to help get my car out of the snow - but at least they can help me get to the gas station! It should be noted that the UW-Parkside police performed 378 motorist assists in 2007. I also speke with Chief Heller about the number of complaints I have heard throughout the hallways about students receiving parking tickets when they cannot see the lines. We discussed this issue, and he did say that they were mindful of weather conditions. 1 also understand that the police need to maintain the parking situation so that folks can get to and from school in a reasonable manner. But I brought up the issue of the $10 that was necessary to appeal a ticket, as this was the bulk of concern 1 had heard from the average college student. I think it is an issue we will continue to discuss and look into, but it was good to find out that the $10 appeal will be refunded if your appeal is granted. The appeals committee is compesed of faculty, staff, and students, and they meet generally once a semester. The $10 appeal charge is to ensure the validity of the claims being pursued. I would like to thank Chief Heller for taking the time to discuss these issues with me in length; ithas helped further my understanding of the services provided by the police here at UW-Parkside. I also would like to give a "shout-out" to the Parkside officer who assisted me in having my car towed from the middle of HWY-E this weekend. I don't know what I would have done with out you! It's also good to note that the police department will only provide services to legal cars and drivers - so keep your legality up to date. If this winter season has taught me anything, it is that you never know when you might be calling the pelice for help! I think this is the perfect time to tell you why this supposed "holiday" is nothing but a bunch of crap. First of all, I'm a male. That means that, statistically, Valentine's Day is designed to frustrate the hell out of me and make my life (a normally smooth sailing enterprise) ten times harder. According to history.corn, about one bilJion Valentine cards are exchanged per year and women purchase about 85 percent of all Valentine's gifts. If you do the math, you'll find that onJy J 5 percent of Valentines sales are due to men. 15 percent What does that tell you about male opinions of Valentine's Day? It tells you that the majority of males out there despise this pinkish, flowery fiasco- for good reason too if you ask me. The mysterious origin of this stupid holiday notwithstanding, there are more than enough reasons to boycott this banal attempt at "love" on February 14 by looking at its incarnation today. Today. Valentine's Day is a Hallmark Holiday if ever there was one. The retail business plans for this "holiday" months in advance by preparing all their "special," mass- produced, and heavily advertised Valentine's Day "goodies" for all those love-birds out there to gobble up. I' know how great I would feel if a significant other of mine took time out of her busy schedule to stop in at Walgreen '5, pick up a pretty little $2.95 Valentine's Day card- written by som~ faceless Hallmark employee-sign her name on it. attach a heart shaped box of novelty chocolates- manufactured by some guy named Russell Stover-and then give me the package as if itwere the perfect (not to mention unique!) symbol of her love. Somehow, 1 fail to find enthusiasm for this most "thoughtful" of gestures. Maybe I'm more of a romantic than I thought, but it seems to me that real love is the sort of thing that happens regardless of some arbitrarily chosen and impersonal date of annual roman lie celebration. I'm going to be bold here and say that those who take Valentine's Day most seriously are probably the ones that are the least in love. Anyone who really is in a healthy, loving relationship with another would have no need to make a big fuss over an artificial holiday like Valentine's Day. Instead of doing something to "show they care" on the day everyone else is "showing they care." partners truly in love would be caring for each other virtually every day of the year; and, if they do happen to do something "special" on a particular day, at least that day would be uniquely meaningful to them personally and no one else. This idea of Valentine's Day-the letting "the day define the love" rather than having "the love define the day" -leads to my next complaint. Valentine's Day creates way too much unnecessary anxiety for those not in the relationship "club" when February 14 rolls around. The public commotion stirred up around Valentine's Day leaves those leading the single's life (or those in malfunctioning relationships for that matter) feeling left out of something. Some have started referring to February 14 as "Singles Awareness Day" to illustrate the way Valentine's Day creates a sort of clique that excludes outsiders from a.ll the fun. As a result of this, many people will seek out others to couple up with just to get through the 14 lh without being alone-to "fit in" with the rest of the clique. What a pile of crap. OPIt.I Qp-ed column February 12, 2008 The problem with the torture debate JOSHUA AULOZZI auloz003@uwp.edu In last week's edition of the Ranger News my fellow opinion writer Ryan Ashton wrote an excellent op-ed on the issue of waterboarding. In the article Ryan laid out his argument for why the US should decry the use of the harsh interrogation technique, basing this opinion mainly on moral grounds. In general I tend to agree with Ryan-and most other Americans it seems-on this issue. That being said, there are a couple of problems with Ryan's argument that are worth noting and an even bigger problem with the torture debate in general. .The first issue with Ryan's piece is that it, to a certain extent, misrepresents the position and attitude of the Attorney General Michael Mukasey toward the topic of waterboarding. Mr. Mukasey has' at no point condoned or advocated the use of waterboarding, nor shown what I would consider "chilling indifference" to the practice. What he has said is that, "There are some circumstances where CUITent law would appear c1earl y to prohibit the use of waterboardiug. Other circumstances would' present a far closer question." He also characterized the practice as "repugnant" in a letterhe wrote to congress in October of 2007. . The fact of the matter is that nowhere in the law does it plainly Guest Editorial state that waterboarding is illegal. Congress attempted in 2006 to pass legislation which would draw clearer lines for what is and isn't considered torture, including a ban on waterboarding, but the bill failed to pass. The fact that Congress felt it was necessary to clarify the issue lends credence to the Attorney General's position that-legally speaking-it is not a cut and dry issue. His statements about there being a "continuing debate among reasonable minds" surrounding the issue is also strengthened by the actions of Congress. It seems to me that it is not Mr. Mukasey's lack of moral fiber that leads him to hold the position he does, but rather a desire to keep his stance on the issue within the realistic limits of the law. A second issue with Ryan's article is his assumption that Kant's deontological method of determining morality is the only valid one; and in fact the method that America's leaders should use when making decisions. This is a debate which is much too complex and deep to get too far into in a brief op-ed, but a quick example will hopefully sufficiently demonstrate my point. The ticking time bomb situation is very commonly included in any discussion surrounding torture. As Ryan mentioned, even in the event of an eminent nuclear catastrophe, the deontological view of morality would not allow for harsher Interrogation tactics. This is a position that I, and I suspect many other Americans, are not willing to accept. For a whole host of reasons, [ don't think our country should torture people. However, if torturing one person could save the lives of hundreds of thousands . of people, then I think in this extreme situation, certain tactics which might verge on. or even cross the line into torture, should be used. Furthermore, it seems that taking the Kantian position in this circumstance would in fact be immoral. The final issue that I find with Ryan's piece is his statement tbat torture doesn't work, and in fact produces false information and other problematic results. This is an oft stated fact from those arguing against waterboarding and other forms of harsh interrogation and it is certainly possible that it is a true statement for most forms of torture. However, this belief is demonstrably false when it comes to waterboarding. There are three declassified cases of the CIA using waterboarding as an interrogation technique, those of Kalid Sheik Mohammed, the alleged 9/ II mastermind, Abu Zubaydah, and another top level Al Qaeda operati ve. In all three cases the use of waterboarding was extremely successful and brought interrogators extremely valuable intelligence information. This is of course not an endorsement of the practice, but these well documented cases are in direct opposition to the widely held belief that waterboarding isn't a successful method of interrogation. The fact that these three cases are the only documented instances of the 'practice being used brings me. to the main problem I have with the torture debate in generaL It is that there seems to be an assumption among tbe opposition crowd that the use of waterboarding and other forms of torture is widespread throughout our military and intelligence agencies. This is an assumption that is held without any real evidence or support, and in fact the evidence seems to point to exactly the opposite reality. As is stated above, there are only three cases of any US agency or military force using the technique, and the last of those was more than five years ago. As someone who was personally present during the holding and interrogation of high value enemy targets, I have more experience than many on this topic, and I can state that from my personal experience and a fair amount of knowledge on the issue that the use of torture is not condoned by the US and is certainly not the widespread problem that it has been made out to be. I live on campus and feel that the people who live on campus are treated unfairly just because we live on campus. I noticed Feb. 7 that the Communications parking lot and the Molinaro parking lot were plowed very nicely. Yet the students who live on campus had to dig their cars out themselves with shovels. I was told by several students that were digging their cars out that our parking lot was finally going to . be plowed. I was also told that I would have to park elsewhere. I parked in the Molinro parking lot and then I went to my 3:30 class; and, by the time I went back to my apartment around 5:30, the 'University Apartment parking lot and the Ranger Hall parking lot looked exactly the same. This makes me very angry because we have several students :i. • ,#. • • r that are handicapped that live on campus and they rely on having plowed sidewalks and plowed parking lots to get back and forth from class and back to their dorm or apartment. I fell Feb 7 trying to get to my apartment and then back to my car. Thankfully I wasn't hurt but I should be able to walk between my car and my apartment without the thought that I am going to fall because the parking lot is full of snow. Since the University of Wisconsin-Parkside doesn't plow the Ranger Hall parking lot and , , the University Apartment parking lot (and they haven't since it started snowing in December) all the students that live on campus should hire a private snowplow. Then that private snowplow could dump the snow on the Chancellor's parking spot and the rest of the snow in the parking lot of the UW-Parkside Police Department. After distribution last Tuesday, I sat and counted all the leftover issues from Dec. 18. Out of 2000 issues we had printed, there were about 90 left. If you do some rough math, that ends up being about 95% circulation. Granted, the issue was on the stands for well over a month, but it is something 10 be proud of nonetheless. If we continue to improve 'the .content of our paper, I think the circulation numbers will improve as well. Much to the amazement of some staff, this week is another 12-page issue. From what 1 understand, this doesn't happen very often, Going back to the improving of content ~ if we riot only improve the quality of our content, but also the quantity-I believe we can consistently produce a newspaper that covers more issues, both on campus and off campus. The goal bere is to improve the reputation of the paper, make the paper more interesting for you to read, and make it more interesting for us to create. Unfortunately, with the good must corne some notso-good. The one that has been bothering me the most is our reporters. Some of the reporters are great, they show up to every meeting (and if they can't attend, they let me know in advance), take on a story or two, and get everything in by deadline. But to counter them, there are a handful of reporters who almost never attend meetings, take on stories when they feel it is convenient for them, and usually turn in their stories past deadline. This not only makes the paper look bad. but it makes the reporters themselves look bad. If Ihe reporters are interns, it most certainJ y will affect their grade. Staff at The Ranger News know that the meetings on Fridays - are mandatory staff meetings. Along these lines, there are a few reporters who would like to be bumped up to page editors. Which would be fine, except thai they want to be page editors for completely wrong reasons. I think these reporters need to step back and evaluate how their actions have affected both themselves (in terms of their integrity and dependability) and The Ranger . News. Hopefully admitting that we're not perfect doesn't discourage anyone from joining The Ranger News. The clinic was intended for people of all. ages, welcoming anyone who was trying to improve his or her game. Tustin FOOie, a physical therapist, talked about common injuries that golfers 'acquire over a long period of time. Injuries include the lower back, neck - which usually results in a muscle pull and doesn't tolerate a hard-swing, elbows and wrists - through poor mechanics, and the shoulders. If there was a specific injury to the shoulders, the golfer wouldn't be .able to get full rotation in his or her swing. To avoid injury to the lower back, Justin Fediesuggested, "You want to try to keep a neutral "S" _ curve while you swing the club". -He also stated that stretching allows full range of motion in your swing. If you do not stretch, the risk of injury is even greater: According to Fedie, "stretching helps prevent injuries and helps your game." Fedie explained that professional golf stars . like Tiger Woods get injured much less often because they are so efficient in their swing. Hansen also talked about "The Six Ns" of every golf shot: Assess, Align, Act, Accept, Analyze, and <,-djust. Hansen described that assessing the circumstances, choosing the right club, and aligning the shot takes roughly thirty seconds. He further claimed in the following week's article that througb a "high" source that Racine sounded like it was the most "qualified" city because they seemed to best meet the criteria the site committee set forth. The site committee's main criteria was that "[t]he community shall contract to make the site available as the development of the campus and the needs of the state require." Racine's proposal did seem to fit the criteria. Racine proposed to fill in the lake, to create more lakefront land, which would reduce cost, donate the land of Pershing Park and the current University of Wisconsin-Racine Center, and Western Publishing president, William Wadewitz, would donate some of his downtown land. This would provide the university with roughly 49 acres. Over time, they would also purchase 100 local homes for the university's use. Kenosba proposed several sites as well. Their county and city were working together as well. They did not have such drastic plans as Racine- did; they would simply offer some sites that had ample acreage. One suggestion 10% off with this ad was the old Bong Air Force Base (now Bong Recreational Park), another was the 690-acres of rolling farmlands, open fields, and forest between Petrifying Springs Park and Wood Road. By May of 1966, the committee finally made their decision;.tJ1ey chose the 690 acre parcel of land. Given that the university would be between the two cities, the student body would be corning from the two UW Centers: Kenosha and Racine, and the rivalry had been so callous - the state legislature decided that it would irresponsible to give this university the name of only one of the cities. The idea for a suitable name was discussed, and it was clear that the only logical name to choose was UW-Parkside. Do something productive in college. Do something with The Ranger News. As one may have guessed from her name, Bomb Queen's favorite way to dispatch anyone who opposes her is through explosives, the effects of which are lovingly detailed in the art of the book. The Bomb Queen herself is drawn -in the typical female character fashion: dangerous curves and a costume that barely covers what it needs to. Although she does use her feminine wiles to her advantage, the character is presented as a strong, independent woman. Of course. she is also a raving lunatic that has no qualms blowing up people just for the fun of it, but no one is perfect. The series just wrapped up its fourth chapter, subtitled Suicide Bomber. Each chapter is made up of four issues and the previous three have been reJeased as trade paperback collections. I recommend starting with the first,' chapter as the story arcs are self- ~ contained, but all the chapters . build upon the last, giving background information and revelations. I do not, however, recommend the Bomb Queen series for younger people, those who are easily offended by language (cursing and innuendo) and violence, or those that don't have a sense of humor and take things way too seriously. Bomb Queen is 'mpletely evil just because befeels like it, and the citizens • 8 The Ranger News february 5, 2008 op-ed column What Iam doing here JOSHUA AULOZZI aulozOO3@uwp.ectu Well, instead of writing an actual op-ed for this first week of the new column, I decided to do a sort of introductory piece. I want to first of all introduce myself, as most of the people who will be reading my opinions have no idea who I am, and secondly I want to explain what type of articles will appear in the column and what my reasoning is for writing here. For starters, I don't want to get too personal, but feel a little bit of background on. me is relevant given that many of my opinions-as is the case with most people-i-are greatly influenced by my upbringing and the experiences I've had throughout the first 27 years of my life. I am a native of Kenosha and have lived here my entire life, aside from the time I spent in the Military. After graduating from Bradford High School in 1999, I worked for a couple of years, and then joined the Army after September 11, 200 I. I spent the next four years in Georgia with the 3'" Ranger BaUal_aaod wu.<IepIoyed three times to Afghanistan and twice to Iraq. Overall my time in the service was a great experience. but I decided to get out after my initial four-year contract because my wife and I had just had a baby and I didn't like tbe idea of leaving them again. Immediately after leaving the Army I enrolled at Parkside and have been here full time for the past 3 years. My major is English, but I also have a great deal of interest and have taken a number of courses in both Political Science and Philosophy. As for the column, there are a couple of reasons I wanted to write opinions for The Ranger News. First off, I am a fairly politically interested person, and as such, I think it is important to be-at least somewhatpolitically informed. That being said, I also understand that many young people care much less about politics and political issues than I do. The problem with this is that though a person may pay little attention to politics or real issues, he or she is still very likely to hold opinions on these issues. Often these opinions are extremely uninformed and have no factual or even logical reasoning to back them up. My goal in writing this column is to expose some of the views that are fairly commonly held in the hopes that readers would come to a better understanding of their own opinions and, in the future, use a bit more caution in holding to beliefs which have' little factual basis. My second reason for writing opinions in The Ranger News is that I believe there is a great deal of value in hearing different points of view about political issues; and I think my perspective on any issues is very different from the views Parkside students may be used to encountering. Idon't necessarily expect or even hope to change the opinions of this column's readers, but I certainly do hope tbat my writing would provoke thought and even some debate about the topics I discuss. Finally, I encourage anyone reading this column to e-mail me your own thoughts, opinions and disagreements about what I write, and I will attempt to get any insightful comments published in a future edition of The Ranger News. Waterboarding: the draining of America's decency RYAN ASHTON ashtoOOl@uwp.edu In a testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, January 30, Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey refused to clearly state whether waterboarding-a form of torture that simulates drowning-is legal or illegal. As the head of the United States Department of Justice. the Attorney General has the important responsibility of representing the moral and legal standing of the United States. It is with this in mind that I believe the chilling indifference Mr. Mukasey demonstrated over the issue of waterboarding is an aberration of the moral and legal integrity of the United States. Insofar as the United States is a civilized nation it should be common practice for United States officials to adhere to the most elementary forms of morality and human decency. Contrary to what Mr. Mukasey's testimony would have you believe, defining the scope of elementary moral practic ':5 not ambiguous over matters concerning the torturing of human beings. The famous eighteenth century philosopher Immanuel Kant, for example, very concisely outlined a conception of morality that essentially states the following: Moral behavior, with respect to humans, is such that a person always treat another human being as an endnever merely as a means to an end. Torture, since it is arguably the most flagrant instance of "mere means" treatment conceivable, clearly violates Kant's simple moral maxim. On that basis alone the United States is obligated to refrain from considering the use of torture as a legal interrogation technique-that is, of course, assuoting that the United States wishes to remain civilized. Some may argue, however, that waterboarding is not clearly torture, and, therefore, that it may not compromise the moral standing of the United States if it were used. Now, I have no idea how one might make the case that waterboarding is not torture (it is a simulated execution after all), but even if such a claim were granted, Mukasey's own testimony is sufficient to demonstrate how waterboarding violates Kant's simple standard for evaluating moral behavior. In his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Mukasey stated that the legality of the waterboarding technique depended on "the heinousness of doing it, the cruelty of doing it balanced against the value ... of what information you might get." This is quintessential means-end reasoning. Essentially, Mukasey is arguing here that the ends (information) justify the means (waterboardi ng) - preci sely the antithesis of Kant's moral maxim. Even though the immorality of torture is the most important argument against its use, there is yet another convincing reason to remove it from the list of possible interrogation techniques: It doesn't work. According to the Army's own Field Manual on intelligence interrogation, "The use of force, mental torture... or exposure to unpleasant and inhumane treatment of any kind is prohibited by law and is neither authorized nor condoned by the US Government. Experience indicates that the Use of force is not necessary to gain the cooperation of sources for interrogation. Therefore, the Use of force is a poor technique, as it yields unreliable results, may damage subsequent collection efforts, and can induce the source to say whatever he thiaks the interrogator wants to hear." For those who feel that special circumstances, like hypothetical "ticking time-bomb" scenarios, prevent the option of torture from being taken off the table completely, the burden is on you to demonstrate why. It is sickening enough to consider that torture- the abuse of the most basic of human rights-could be used as the means toward the end of '<information gathering;" but, it is utterly monstrous to consider that torture could be used toward no further end whatsoever. Since it is well understood that torture yields "unreliable results," it seems as though the latter scenario is inevitable wherever torture is used. In that sense then, torture becomes its own end-a completely intolerable possibility. In light of this, any country that condones torture, either by actively using it or considering its possible use, is entertaining a position that is so grotesque it has no business calling itself "civilized." The application has individuals choose between friends in .a virtual popularity contest. Some of the questions individuals have 10 compare friends to include "Who wouJd you rather get stuck in handcuffs with", "Who would you rather be trapped on a desert island with", "Who would you_ rather sleep with", "More likely to win in a fight". "More famous", "Rather kiss", and "Better at science", In my opinion, this is a waste of time. Comparing people in order to receive a higher ranking for yourself just "doesn't make sense. Why waste five to ten minutes of your life choosing which friend is more famous over the other, while you could go work out or hang out with a friend? Another thing thaI gets me is the immaturity that surrounds the entire compare people application. It forces you. to compare between' some of your best friends in ridiculous questions such as "Nicest smelling?" Who cares what other people smell like? Don't get all frustrated if you don't get the number one ranking for "Nicest smelling." Also, the Compare People application makes me feel like I'm in nigh school all over again. For example, in the Compare People application 1 ranked 53" prettiest and 127'" most likely to succeed. In my opinion, it didn't matter where I ranked back in high school and it .still doesn't matter today. Also. I've noticed that in order to receive your results after you are finished comparing people, you have the option of sending the Compare People application to 20 other people. Sending out the request to 20 other people is seemingly sending the application to 20 other victims. Comparing people just for gossip, and to see who is more popular and outgoing than the other is' a virtual kick in the face to those who do not score high on the application, Here's an idea: Instead of judging others based on their appearances, why not axe the application all together? As the late comedian Rodney Dangerfield used to say "I get no respect, I tell ya.' Irresponsible journalism ROBERT ROSATI robertrosati@hotmail.com 1 bad planned to write this for last weeks edition of The Ranger News, but in the course of planning layout and editing articles, the newspaper article that this editorial is about was misplaced. As a result this article is a little dated, but nevertheless deserves to be called out for what it is: an example of irresponsible journalism. Three weeks ago on Friday, January 18, it was two days before the NFC Championship game between the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants. There was much hype for the game, which 1 expected. However, that Friday morning something caught my attention. On the front cover of The Racine Journal Times was an article describing a celebration that an individual's family does whenever the Packers score. To say I was shocked to find this on the front cover of a newspaper would be an understatement. Had the article been placed into the sports section where it should have been, 1 would find it a little hara to understa'"d why it made the cover of the sports page, but would still understand the logic of the decision. But it wasn't. The touchdown celebration article. including a picture of the man who leads his family a Packers scoring celebration sitting in a chair, took up half of the front page. To the Journal Times- it appears that Chancellor John Keating's decision to retire from ~IAre you participating in SSUE Spirit Week? "No. T don't even know what it's about." -Katie Lefor, 21, Sociology "Of course. Before the show got underway he asked the participants on stage to use the bathroom, and in the meantime explained to the audience that they were more than welcome to be hypnotized-only if they wanted to; and if an audience member wanted to be hypnotized, . all they had to do was focus on Sailesh's voice and follow his instructions. Once the participants came back to their seats on stage, Sailesh directed them into a state of relaxation, and eventually a state of deep sleep. There were various scenarios that the participants woke up to find themselves in, beginning with the participants finding themselves "outside" in freezing cold temperatures. They were shivering, shaking, rubbing their hands together, and snuggling up with each other to try and stay warm. The participants were also astronauts on a trip to Mars, and once they "arrived". - they made contact with aliens: At first the aliens were nice I but pretty soon they turned mean, and participants were encouraged to show the aliens that they were angry. The participants then flew back to Earth and were put back to sleep. Other scenarios included the participants "watching" a big screen TV, watching the funniest show they've ever seen. When asked what they were watching, answers included things like "The Simpsons Movie", and "The Dave Chapelle Show". Another show on the TV was various kinds of porn-a regular porno, the participants in ~a porno, and the participants in a gay porno. This scenario was a definite crowd pleaser. When the participants awoke next, Sailesh told them they were looking at him naked. Reactions varied, as some of the girls stared and most of the guys looked away as fast as they could. Next, they were looking at him as a naked female, and the reactions were pretty much opposite of the first scenario-the girls looked away, the males stared. One male in the audience, who was hypnotized, went up to the stage and asked for Sailesh's number. A few scenarios later, the participants found themselves on the Jerry Springer Show. They were about to tell the nation about a disgusting habit their best friend has. One. notable response included a friend eating Legos, because he' "wants to shit a brick·'" The participants were put back into a deep sleep, and were awaken to find themselves as' the opposite sex participating in a dating service. When asked, they' were to explain to the audience what they were looking for in a partner. The last scenario Sailesh put the participants through is what he may be best. known OI. The . participants were awoken to find themselves being sprayed by a Super Soaker filled with muddy water. They were not allowed to physically harm Sailesh since they were «glued" to their chairs, but they were more than welcome to yell at him, make rude gestures, and so on. The next part of this scenario "unglued" the participants, and when they were sprayed with the Super Soaker, they were making love to their chairs, having the best multiorgasm of their lives. Another spray with the Super Soaker, and they got a little more kinky than they had been previously. To end the show, Sailesh instructed them that they would not be embarrassed about anything they did on stage, and that they would remember everything. They would have , great self-confidence from that point forward, which would last for the rest of their lives. Sailesh got his start with hypnotism when 'he was in college in Canada. A friend hypnotized him, and from that point on he read books about hypnotism and self-hypnosis. He started training, and has been hypnotizing for about 13 years. Even though Tony's physical presence wanes through the first act, the tension he creates in Theresa's life only intensifies. Theresa grows progressively concerned, and talks to her boss, Howard, about the situation. Eventually,everything escalates to thepoint where Theresa contacts the police; only to be told there isn'tmuch the police can do until Tonyphysically harms Theresa The toll the situation is taking on Theresa is apparent when she goes to interview Les Kennkat, a cult film director obsessed with J,\RT women and their breasts, and gets rather snippy with him at certain points in their interview. Tony seems to follow Theresa's every move, and in some instances seems to be a step ahead of her. As a result Theresa moves in with Howard while she looks for a new apartment. Her co-workers, on the other hand, aren't quite as helpful. Mercer, for example, wants to write an article about gender roles, and how backwards dating and courtship can be. Theresa is extremely offended by this, assuming Mercer wants to write about her specifically. Harriet, Theresa's assistant, doesn't realize the situation until it's far too late, and has given out Theresa's unlisted phone number. Once Harriet . comes clean about this, Theresa fires her. The seriousness of the situation is obvious when Howard and Mercer take a trip to Theresa's apartment to gather some personal items for her. Once they open the door, they find the' entire place ransackedbooks strewn across the floor, clothes ripped to shreds, food thrown around in the kitchen, just about everything is destroyed. They have a brief conversation, discussing whether they ought to call the police or not, and whether or not they should tell Theresa abont it. The final straw is when Howard, Mercer, and Theresa try to clean up her apartment when Tony rings the buzzer, and Mercer tries to pursue him as Tony flees the scene. Ultimately, the boy has gotten the girl-Tony got under Theresa's skin, and ruined her life without once touching ber. Theresa decides to follow the advice given to her earlier by the detective assigned to her case, Madeleine Beck - Theresa will change her name and move to a new state, Before she leaves, she sets things right with Les Kennkat, who had his colon taken out. As it turns out, he is the only person in the play she can relate to. The cast of this production had great chemistry on stage, which was evident right from the beginning. Staged readings, like the FreshInk series, use only minimal amounts of costuming, lights, and sound effects. The lighting, sound, and costuming were almost faultless in this production. The talkback after the show was very informative, and it was great to see how much effort was put into the show with the limited amount of time the cast and crew had to prepare. This committee will be composed of faculty, staff, students and community members nominated by Keating and other governance heads in the UW-System. The search- and-screen committee will then produce five possible candidates to he judged by a committee composed of UW- System regents. Before the end of the semester, there will also be an open forum on campus with these final five candidates. Reilly suggested that it should be easy to find candidates for the position because of the "attractiveness of this campus and the attractiveness of this area of the state." "Our challenge is to identify the new campus CEO with the right skills, experience and drive to keep alive the positive momentum established here during Jack's tenure" said Falbo, who will be chairing the selection committee composed of regents. He added that "as a proud and active UW-Parkside alumnus, I know Chancellor Keating's absence will be felt throughout these halls, these halls that have been made stronger by his presence," Reilly spoke of Keating's efforts to solidify the relationship between the university and the UW-Parkside communities through civic engagement and service projects. "His guidance and leadership have given the university a substantial foundation for future progress. That foundation will be especially important as we begin to think about the next chapter of UW- Parkside's history of stellar service," said Reilly. Overseeing the school's first Master Plan, Keating helped implement over $100 million worth of construction development. Keating is also responsible for bringing the civic service project "Campus Compact" to the UW-System, as well as many other programs to support service and community involvement. In fact, the Carnegie Foundation named UW- Parkside one out of 64 nationally recognized "engaged campuses," and the university is the only Wisconsin school to achieve this designation. UW-Parkside has also been used as a model of excellent community engagement for Division n universities. "Over the past decade, Chancellor Keating has ambitiously set out to position UW-Parkside as an engine of economic development in the state of Wisconsin broadly and in this region especially," said Reilly. He added that "if we are going to be successful as a state in the future ... we have to use our college campuses to attract and hold tatent to help grow the kinds of jobs in the future that our graduates will take and that will attract graduates from other institutions." Reilly also mentioned UW- Parkside's growing academic reputation, including the addition of seven new academic majors during Keating's tenure. The applied health sciences major, which is currently in its first year, has already caught the interest of approximately 40 students at the university. Keating recalled last spring, when the Board of Regents visited UW-Parkside, and the campus presented them with "the three 'E's: excellence in education for everyone." He said, "This campus really sparkled and it didn't sparkle because we're building new buildings - because we were, they saw it. It sparkled because what our faculty and staff have done for our students and how our students were so well-educated, so terrific in their presentations." As the most diverse campus in the UW-system, both in faculty and students, UW-Parkside presents an attainable education to the student body, approximately 67% of whom are the first in their family to attend college. "Everyone is accepted here at UW-Parkside if they are willing to work and work hard to get their degree," said Keating. He added that. ;,'We're not elitist. We're basically grass-roots." In the next eight months, Keating promises to increase scholarship funds to support the educational goals of the university's neediest students. During his time at UW- Parkside, Keating has supported the Equity Scorecard Project, which works to break down the barriers to educational success that still exist in an ever- growing diverse population of undergraduates. To promote academic achievement, Keating also introduced the First Year Experience program with the goal of increasing student retention and graduation rates. The Ranger News - past Wednesday, I announced my decision to step down and the staff voted Jo Kirst into the position. I am sure that she will do a great job leading the newspaper and I have every confidence that the organization will continue to grow and develop. For myself, however, I will be functioning at a much less active role with The Ranger News. I will be returning to reporting, where I first started more than two years ago, to write about the issues that matter most to our university. Because I can no longer dedicate the time and energy needed to be the editor in chief, I feel that It is with some sadness that I have recently stepped down from my position as editor in chief of The Ranger News. It is amazing how much can change over the course of one semester, and even over the one- month winter break. Recently, I have decided to pursue graduate school as an alternative to entering the work force immediately after my graduation from UW- Parkside this May. I also found a new job at Barks-N-Bubbles in Kenosha, which is (somewhat surprisingly) one of the most fun jobs I have ever had. The only bad thing is cleaning up ferret poop, which stinks really bad. I will also be spending a lot of my them in the best way possible. If we take what we have learned at the conference and combine it with the support and good communication we already have, The Ranger News should be able to improve the quality of its work signifioantly. I have a few goals for The Ranger News this semester. For the staff, I'd like to expand everyone's knowledge of the paper's mechanics, along with keeping our meetings semi- democratic. I know that as Editor- in-Chief I have the final say in what does or does not happen, but I also know that people like to voice their concerns, opinions, and suggestions. I want to hear those opinions because I value them and the people they come from. As far as the paper itself goes, I would like to start some new things and restart some past ideas -like an occasional "lit" section. On a different note entirely, I'll tell you a litlie bit about me. Currently, I am a sophomore majoring in Criminal Justice.
