Monson: Great cross country career closes ROB HANSEN Hanse082@uwp.edu On Saturday Nov. 22, 2008, Jessica Monson capped off an amazing cross country career at the University of WisconsinParkside with a fifth place finish at the NCAA II National Championship cross country meet held Slippery Rock, Penn. Temperatures dwindled in the lower 30s and snow covered a fair amount of the 6,000 meter course which Monson covered in 21:38. The winner was Jessica Pixler, a junior from Seattle Pacific with a time of 20:59. Monson commented that some areas of the course had been plowed, yet others had nearly in inch of snow on it. Jessica's fifth place finish is among only a handful of topfive finishes at nationals for the UW-Parkside women runners. This finish earned Monson, her third cross country All-American award. She also has five more Ail-American awards between indoor and outdoor track and field. Monson stayed off of the early pace which was set but Pixler, and came through the mile in 15th place or so. Her mile split was 5:59, which is considerably slower than what Monson was used to: "There was a monstrosity of a hill at the 400 meter mark, and it f elt as if I was walking up it." By the 5,000 meter mark Jessica had moved into fifth position where she worked desperately to reel in the front four. She managed to catch the fourth place female, Heather Wood of Adams State, but did not have enough to get around her. "This has been the most gratfying feat for me definitely. 1 n ever would have thought that 1 cou ld place fifth at the national meet from where I started as a freshmen. Cross Country has always been more of a challenge for me more than track has," said the 2nd place 1500 meter runner from last year's outdoor NCAA II meet and multiple time 800 meter All American. The Ranger News asked Monson to reflect back upon her cross country career and her track career to this point. She told us that her sophomore year Distance Medley Relay 2nd place finish in Boston, MA at the NCAA II indoor championship meet was her fondest memory; "...it is so rewarding to be successful with a team that you've been training with for a long period of time, it was amazing to share such a success with other hardworking individuals (Naomi Fulton, Valerie Kelly and Jill Winkler, all graduated)." This year was one of only a handful of years that the UWParkside women did not qualify as a team for NCAA II National Meet. Monson expressed her disappointment in her team not qualifying; "Cross country is a team sport, and nationals are a great place to compete, I wished I could have shared the experience with them." Monson expressed how hard-working her teammates are, and that they really deserved the opportunity to be there as well. The team's number one goal for next year is to right the ship and get back to the NCAA II meet. For now, Monson will focus solely on indoor track. She has an ultimate outcome goal of being the first UW-Parkside woman to run under 4:40 in the mile. This feat would land her near the top of the nation in the DII meet, and even very near the top of the NCAA DI elites. "With the right training and the right focus I am confident that I will attain each of my goals. My Coach is fantastic, there is no one who knows running better than he does, so 1 feel certain that my goals are within reach." Monson admits she has her work cut out for her, but with the whole UW-Parkside crowd behind her, nothing can stop her. As for a post-collegiate career for Monson, she is unsure of any exacts. "I will still be running, and training, and competing, but I am not sure of anything other than that, I am focused solely on this indoor season right now." She will be graduating in May with a nursing degree from Parkside and looking for a position in that field, which will allow her to train and compete on a full-time basis. When The Ranger News asked Monson if she believed the recent hype considering her the greatest runner at UW-Parkside history she said, "There are many great runners that have come before her, runners that have accomplished as much and sometimes more than 1 have." Monson said she simply gives her best and that s all a person can do. Monson would like to attribute her success to several sources. She attributes much of her success to God for having given her the ability to run and compete. In addition she mentioned her Coach, with whom she'd be lost without. Also, she is thankful for her family for all of the support they have given; "They are at almost every meet, and there are countless instances where someone rides a bike next to me to keep me company, especially on a long day. She also made mention of her teammates throughout the years. "Without their encouragement, I could have achieved very little." With one more indoor and one more outdoor season of track and field, Monson, having already achieved so much, still have a lot to accomplish. Her extreme focus and dedication have her primed to close out her UW-Parkside running career very successfully. Kanye West, The Killers, and Britney Spears are striving for domination ot the charts and your attention. Kanye West takes his diehard fans on a rollercoaster of a ride with his experimental side on 808s & Heartbreak. The usually arrogant rapper takes a woeful approach to his new project, after the devastating experiences of his mother's deadly plastic surgery and breakup with his fiancee. In addition to Kanye's therapeutic writing influences, he takes a blind stab at singing with the help of Auto-Tune, a recording technology made to cover-up In Photos mistakes. 808s & Heartbreak's, first two singles, "Heartless" and "Love Lockdown", are successful with the Auto-Tune. Both are poignant tunes wrapped in heartache getting help from the powerful Roland TR-808 drum machine, after half the album is named. The drum effect is like candy to the ear, with the tribal beats ringing its sweet melody. The song that resonated the most with me was "Welcome To Heartbreak", an intament discussion of things that everyone would want (kids, marriage), but happen to slip away and the realization that success mixed with fame is not what as good as it looks. 808s & Heartbreak, may disappoint those who expect the same radio-friendly, repetitive music that Kanye has presented in the past. But to those open will enjoy this portrait of pain and well crafted artistry. Moving on from heartache to playful rock, Vegas-natives The Killers are back with their third album Day & Age evolving with a new-wave flavor, but never abandoning their rock roots. You can definitely hear The Killers with their ringing anthems paying major omige to their great predecessors such as: Queen, David Bowie, Elton John and New Order. With the lead single, "Human", it c aptures a thumping energy; its electronic edge isn't suffocating, but is lighthearted and rollicking. Lead singer, Brandon Flowers described the song the best with his interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, "Johnny Cash meets the Pet Shop Boys". Day & Age is by far a great progression for the band well on their way on being one of the best rock bands of our time. With the songs like "Neon Tiger", "A Dustland Fairytale" and "This Is Your Life" are cherries on top of a luscious line-up of alternative goodness. When you think about Britney Spears, come on you can admit it, you cannot deny that her life is nothing short of a wild Circus, a fitting title for her sixth studio effort. We all know the headlines of her divorce, mental capacity and children. And you would think after being under the hellish glare of the media spotlight she would want to address her issues upfront, unfortunately she barely touches on the tough subjects. One exception is "Out from Under", which expresses the rawness of her pain with vague lyrics like: "..and part of me still believes when you say you're gonna stick around and part of me still believes we can find a way to work it out". Why not just scream his name with expletives all around it? The rest of Circus is back to the pop basics, lots of glitz and an insufficient amount of substance. The fact is that Britney seems less of a ring leader and more of a marionette puppet, with her strings being pulled for her. Despite that minor pitfall, the album is a collage of mediocre dance songs, with the most impactful hits being "Kill The Lights" and "Unusual You" , both produced by Timbaland protege, Danja. Both the youthful and the elderly wiggled excitedly in their seats for the performance that was about to take place. David Bayles, the director of the featured program introduced the upcoming song and mentioned that he himself would be one of the performers. As three other men joined Mr. Bayles, everyone eagerly awaited the interesting percussion instruments that silently stood before them. "Temptation Revamp" was performed first and was arranged by the University of Wisconsin . Parkside's Percussion Ensemble. ; - Thi's required the drums; played by Mr. Bayles; the xylpphone, played by Matt Tatlock; and the marimba, played by both Adam Gerlach and Paul Westfahl. It was a bouncy, upbeat introduction for these instruments, some of which I h aven't heard since I was a kid. To hear the xylophone again made me smile and think back to when I had a smaller model as a little child. Next came a solo act done by Mr. Westfahl and the vibraphone. The song was titled "Music of the Day", but the second that the vibraphone was struck, I instantly felt as if I was in a dream world. The texture of the notes was thick and mellow; everyone in the room seemed to chill out in their seats. Like a pebble hitting a pond, the song would have a single high pitch note, then elongated ripples of gentle notes would tremor afterwards. Yet one particular performance exploded forth and racked everyone's minds. It was the song, "Trio Per Uno" composed by Nebojsa Jovan Zivkovic and it already appeared to be a special composition since Mr. Bayles explained how the song would be played. As the title states, there are three separate pieces combined into one; these are called "movements" and that each movement is completely different from the last. While Mr. Bayles was talking, the audience began to perk up in their seats as a giant drum was brought into the center of the room. The first movement began with the "bumbum-bum" of the bass drum as Mr. Westfahl, Mr. Tatlock, and'' Mr. Gerlach each took a pair of huge sticks and pummeled in an aggressive manner. The style of drumming was Kodo: the Japanese style of drumming. Many would be familiar with this style since it is known as "the drums of war", sedn in multiple fantasy and samurai movies whenever an epic battle scene appeared. Instantly, the crowd was captivated by the warlike rhythm and some even bobbed their heads to the beat. Attached to the colossal drum were the dwarfed bongos and cymbal gongs that were placed in front of each man. As the song progressed, the rhythm grew more complex and intense as each percussionist switched from bass drum to bongos to gongs within seconds. Their arms were mere blurs as they continued with the intensity of a thousand warhorses rampaging down the countryside. Then without warning, the song abruptly ended with a final harsh blow upon the bass drum. The audience went wild with applause and cheers as the three percussionists bowed. With such an intense first movement, the second gave time for the musicians to rest their burning arms. Movement Two was a tranquil aftermath of a fierce battle. The soothing tones of the vibraphones made a solemn comeback while chimes, cymbals, and the rain stick chimed in. Movement Three was a trinity of union and division. This time the three percussionists had their own separate snare drums and tomtoms, but they still performed as it they were sharing the same instrument. With the same ferocity as the first movement, the third one had a primal aspect to it; along with drumming rapidly, each man let out a yell, of which the other two would echo back. At the end, the entire four man percussion troop joined forces and played another poppy song. What was interesting was that as the song drew closer/to ending, the rhythm increased in speed. As the Percussion Ensemble finished they were met with a standing ovation by most and uproarious clapping. RANGERS SUFFER OVERTIME LOSS SAM ANDERSON ander253@uwp.edu The Rangers were leading with °nly 34 minutes left in regulation before the Robert Morris Eagles came back. This was a non conference game played at Loyola University in Chicago. The Rangers t ied it up thanks to Amy Selk's ljunSp shot that sent the game into an overtime* This was just one of Selk's 14 points o n the game. The shot was not a moment t oo soon as the Rangers needed 'he basket to stay in the game and try to resurrect t heir once obvious lead. Brittany Bever was the high scorer tor the Rangers in this game with her 15 points and Katie Weiglein fouled ou t, but not before rebounding 11 shots. Bie rebounds, though helpful, were lot enough to counter the Ranger's 33 '"movers and the Eagle's 29 points that were scored due to those turnovers. Weiglein also managed an assist, a steal, and a block in the game. Two free throws turned out to be the deciding factor in the game, however, as the Eagles sealed the 71-69 victory by sinking both with only one second left on the clock. This was a stunning upset as Amanda Gibson gave the Rangers a glimmer of hope by landing a three point shot just 3 seconds prior to the forced free, throws to tie up the game, it was an impressive effort, as the Rangers only made'6 .of their 13 3-point attempts and managed 26 of their 62 shots on the basket Robert Morris only managed 5 of their 26 3- point attempts and an even less impressive 22 of their 66 shots were completed. I came home from work this past Friday and turned on television only to discover that the article did have some truth to it after all. A Val-Mart employee from Queens, NY was trampled to death by a group of stampeding customers trying to get their hands on $400 Hat screen television sets and $69 digital ameras. These door buster sales lived up to their name as some two-thousand customers literally k nocked down the entrance doors )f the Wal-Mart, stepping over the man who hey kil led while pushing other employees out of the way who tried to help him. In order to a fford all of those great sale items; these customers choose to sell their souls in lieu of being decent human beings. I would truly hate to be the recipient of me of those $9 DVDs that was purchased only moments after its buyer stepped over i employee's lifeless body just to beat the rash of the customers behind them. It's like receiving drug money in a birthday card; nice I gesture, but it isn't clean. Perhaps some of those buyers went home and decided to give that 50-inch screen television set to their son I or daughter e arly. Maybe they came home ad plugged it in early enough to see the tiagedy that unfolded right under their feet. For them, Christmas is now saved because they got this wonderful deal on a television set the whole family can enjoy. They should be thankful they are able to go home to their families, as Jdimytai Damour, the Wal-Mart employee from Queens, can not. According to a police report, a 28-year old pregnant woman was also trampled amongst this heartless crowd. She and the baby were reported to be doing fine, but if makes you wonder: what in the hell is wrong with people? As I mentioned in my previous article, I've been in retail for a long time. I've honestly witnessed family members get physical over a toy. I've seen complete strangers pushing each other just to get a damn fgSfiS DVD player. Seriously, consider the safety of others before you think of how much your * nephew could really use that item. It is absolutely ridiculous. < Probably the most disheartening report out of the Wal-Mart incident aside ftom an innocent man losing his life over a temporary price markdown were the customer reactions. Witness Kimberly Cribbs described the customers as acting like "savages." claiming that many continued to shop after complaining about being in line since Thursday morning. 1 realize how frustrating that must be, but... YOU WERE JUST INVOLVED IN A MURDER! Where are your morals? Police continued to review the footage through Saturday in hope of discovering any and all parties responsible for the death of the 34-year-old employee. Hopefully the police force can inherit enough evidence to lock up as many of those callous individuals as they possibly can. But in the end. the employee's family are the ones who are really punished as they have one less family member in the name of this 'glorious* annual tradition. Tripp found the section to be constitutional, however it is unethical in the sense that it allows one person unlimited power. The section in question reads: As of late, there has been much talk about the Parkside Student Government Association andtheir constitutions. Currently; thereare three constitutions being discussed in PSGA. The first constitution was the one that last Year'sPSGA members operated under. The second constitution Wasto be voted on by the student bodyin the last election, and the third constitution is a proposed constitution which PSGA IS Currently operating under. It was planned to replace the constitution fromthe last school year. , On Wednesday, Oct 22, a dIscussion began at PSGA's general assembly meeting about what constitution is the correct one to be operating under. Lawrence Tripp, the former Chief lustice(and now Parliamentarian) ofPSGA, began an investigation II1to what constitution PSGA should be operating under, and Whether or not Article V, Section "Section IV. All Justices C. Must meet witltin 5 school days after receiving a complaint from any student. or PSGA member. The decisions made by the Judicial branch shall be binding on all parties involved and shall be forwarded to the designated disciPlinary head of UW-Parkside or the appropriate authorities for implementation." This section basically allows lbe Chief Justice to change anything he'd like, and the rest of PSGA would have to go along with it. Tripp determined that this was not in the best interest of the student body, and changed it in the proposed constitution so that there is not a potential abuse of power. After Tripp's investigation, an ad hoc committee was formed to further investigate Tripp's decision. The investigation is researching complaints about this issue. They are also investigating tbe validity of Tripp's decision, whetber or not the constitution was correct, and whether or not the proposed constitution is in the best interest of the student body. The inconsistencies in last year's constitution, and the validity of spring's election are included in this investigation as well. The validity of spring's election comes into question because it is not known if students were given a copy of the "new" constitution to look over and vote on, or if a copy of the "old" (but current at the time) constitution was available for students. Therefore, at the time of this writing, the ad hoc committee has determined that the constitution that was to be voted on (and passed by the students, 347 votes for to 57 votes against) was not an operational constitution. It was ''We~ve got issues" not passed by both the Senate and the student body, and thus at the beginning of this school year, PSGA was operating under the same constitution they operated under last school year. At the time of this writing, this is the on!y conclusion the ad hoc committee has come to. The rest of the issues in question are still being investigated. If it is determined that Tripp made a poor decision or acted outside of his powers. the Senate can choose to disagree or agree with his decision, and take further action based on their conclusion. Problems with PSGA and rheir constitutions date back to the earliest days of the organization's existence, and there have always been questions of ethics and corruption. As the years went on. this grew into a snowball effect because there was a lack of accountability and a lot of apathy towards these problems. Until now. no administration has taken such drastic measures to correct the problems within the lIS organization. Apathy is not just a problem within PSGA, however, it extends to the student body a a whole. Now that Ted Ruffalo's administration has stepped in, they are working hard to eliminate apathy and corruption in the organization. They are also working to fix the loopholes and inconsistencies in theconstitutlon, and create a constitution that is clear, concise, easily changeable. and has longevity to it. Claims that meetings were held over summer break are true, however, the meetings were not conspiratorial, Further claims that Ruffalo's administration are out to get the students and further their own agenda are unsubstantiated. Tbey will do this by collecting existing GIS data, integrating other spatial data into GIS, and using Global Positioning Systems (GPS) technology to collect additional data. Students involved in this project include Justin Chappelle, Michelle Dolnik, and Cory Tussler. When Ward was asked what be expected from the project, he said, "Two things, 1 expect the students will learn to develop, manage, and complete a GIS project. I also expect the students to develop a connection to the neighborhood." The data collected will be used to produce a neighborhood atlas showing the assets within tbe area. Usually, the focus of community development is CHRISTIAN SHACKELFORD Sback002@uwp.edu This year, Professor John Ward's Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) class is continuing a project In the Racine area. The class is looking at physical assets and demographic data within the Racine River North district. This "We've got issues" on needs. By taking an "asset- based" approach to community development, the focus is on the already-existing assets within tbe neighhorhood. The plan is to make the data available online and to use it, along with other data, to create a "resource directory" for the neighborhood. The project is planned to run through May 2009. Next semester, many of the students will be using tbe data in his Advanced GIS class. "It's important to try and make the place we live better," Ward said. The Geographic Information Systems project is a learning experience, and it helps to connect the students to their community. If something comes up and a reporter can't get their article in by deadline, I have been able to work something out with that reporter so that we still have an article, but they get some extra time to finish it. I think this works well for everybody. Along the same lines, we're slowly but surely improving our content as well. Now that we have some reliable reporters, we are able to cover more events and issues each week. Coming up we'll have an update on PSGA and what's happening with them, information on the Green Bike Project, more student organization profiles, an interview with UWPPD, and more things that I can't really think of right now. We're looking to give The Ranger News something fresh. At our last staff meeting, we tossed around some ideas. Some of these are plausible, some are a challenge but might work, and some (unfortunately) are just out of the question. So now I ask you guys. What would you like to see in future issues of The Ranger ou News? Some puzzles? More comics? More reviews of movies, restaurants, videogames? Recipes that are quick, easy, and healthy? Riedlinger last semester I wrote an editorial piece for the Ranger News about why you should give a damn about Student Government. I don't know how many people noticed, but I know Theodore Ruffalo did. Now he's president of the Parkside Student Government Association, and he and Senate have made it my job to make sure you, our fellow students, understand what they are doing and why it matters, so here it goes. First, it's important to understand what PSGA isn't. The Parkside Student Government Association is not like your high local school student council. coming up with dumb fundraisers just to keep busy. PSGA is not a political science club, nor does it care what major you have chosen. It is also not a closed-session, clandestine organization looking to pull one over on anyone. PSGA is a state-mandated organization under Wisconsin Statute 36.09(5). In essence, the State law grants students of any given institution of higher learning the right to actively participate in the governance and policy development of their school. It also grants the organization the right to collect and distribute fees to support student activities on their campus. These fees currently run about $5,000,000. In short, PSGA is the means by which all of you have a say in what goes on at UW-Parkside, and how the University is run. That's right; we all have a hand in saying who runs this place and what food we eat. We help decide the difference between academic probation and academic suspension. When the University needs a new Chancellor, we help decide who that person is. PSGA is your 'direct line'to the powers that be. If you want Parkside to recognize more transfer or life experience credits, there is probably a committee that decides what is recognized, and PSGA is your conduit to that group. If you have a brilliant solution to all the parking problems on our campus, but can't get anyone in the admtnistratlon to listen to you, PSGA is there to help make your brilliant idea known, and if it is judged to be truly sound, bring that idea to fruition. Look, you could easily sit by the entire time you're attending UWP and never know what PSGA does, but there are some who are trying to change that, and this article is one of those steps. Now the ball is in your court. Are you sick of the food on campus being so expensive? Come to PSGA and help decide what the criteria for our food service provider should be. Tired of our school getting bad press for choosing a guy under a federal investigation to be our next Chancellor? Come to PSGA and help find the right person for the job. You have the power. The Ranger News October 21, 2008 Men's Soccer roller coaster on the rebound ROB HANSEN hanse082@uwp.edu men's soccer team hosted -a pair of ties against conference rivals Missouri S&T and Drury University. The game versus Missouri S&T, contested on Oct. 10, ended scoreless. On Oct. 12, the Drury game was 4-4. The Ranger men dug themselves a seemingly overwhelming 4-0 hole. By halftime, the Rangers were down three goals. Midway through the second half, Drury added another goal. Spencer Bursten, freshman midfielder, tallied two goals over a 100 second span nearly an hour into the contest. Renaldo Vega, senior midfielder, added another goal nearly 70 minutes into the contest, to inch the Rangers closer. trailing 4 -3. In the closing stages of the game. the poised Ranger squad, with an assist from Ben Kreple, was able to set up Dave Mercer in front of goal w.ith_ less than one minute remaining. His game tying goal would be the game's final goal as the two teams battled through two overtime sessions before ending in a 4-4 tie. The Ranger men have three . more games until the GLVC tournament, which begins the first week of November. Their final two games will be played at home, at the Wood Road Soccer Field. They will play host to Southern Indiana and Kentucky Wesleyan, Jonny BeBeau, a sophomore forward, commented, "Our record does not reflect our team's abilities. I think we can beat anyone in the GLVC tournament, and we have as good of a chance as anyone to win the whole thing." He added that some of the upperclassmen leadership, The University of Wisconsin- Parkside men's soccer team has had quite the roller coaster season. The men have been unable to string a pair of wins together since their 3-0 start back in' late August and early September. JOKIRST jo@therangernews.com Due to the unsuccessful search for a new Chancellor at the University of Wisconsin- Parks ide, an Interim Chancellor was picked by the University of Wisconsin System to temporarily fill Chancellor Keating's place. The UW System asked Dr. Lane Earns to step up and temporarily lead UW-Parkside, until a permanent Chancellor is found. The Ranger News got a chance to sit down with Chancellor Earns and ask him a few questions so that the campus as a whole can get to know him better. Dr. Lane Earns was born and raised in Michigan, and went to Michigan State University to obtain his undergraduate degree in high school education, focusing on history. Right before he graduated, he spent two months in Japan as part of a study abroad program, which eventually changed the direction of his studies. He returned from Japan one year tater. Earns was one of seven American picked to return to Japan, where they went to different parts of Japan to help teach English in Japanese schools. Earns went to Nagasaki for one year as part of this program. Today, that program is called the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme (JET program). and has around 6,000 members. Chancellor Earns then went to the University of Hawaii for his Masters degree in Asian Studies, and then went back to Japan to teach English at a women's college, He returned to the University of Hawaii to work towards his PhD in Japanese History. He won a Japan Foundation Dissertation Grant, which allowed him to conduct his dissertation research at the University of Tokyo for one year. He spent two more years in Nagasaki while finishing his degree. In 1987, he went to the University of Wisconsin- Oshkosh, and was a professor of world history and Asian American history. Eventually, he became the chair of the history department. In 2002, he became the Associate Vice Chancellor, and in 2004, he served as the Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor. In 2005, he served as the Provost and Vice Chancellor, and stated in that position until coming to Parkside in Aug. 2008. In 2008, he was asked by the University of Wisconsin System to fiJI the position of Interim Chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. and accepted the position. Earns remarked that the position "seemed like an important job, and something that my particular abilities would he able to help". Dr. Earns was familiar with the UW System, having been part of Oshkosh's campus for years, and he knew several people from Parkside who helped fill him in with information. To him, it seemed like an excellent chance for leadership, and an "opportunity not only to help the system but to be part of a very strong campus", Earns thinks that Parkside is a beautiful campus, and he couldn't have been welcomed any better. A lot of work was put into the Chancellor's house near campus to make it livable- -the house needed some general maintenance. in order to be brought back to top form. He has had "nothing but good things to say" about his experience thus far. Parkside is a smaller campus than he's used to, bUI he finds that a smaller campus allows him to get to know more people and get to know those people a Littleeasier. Earns finds the new Continued 10 )(/~t 3 The Ameth~ t Initiative and responsible drinking Drunk Driving's (and other such groups') outcry about this issue. and the poor media coverage of this discussion as a result. the Amethyst Initiative just wants to engage those outraged groups into talking about the real problem--the poor education that minors receive about responsible drinking. Amethyst Initiative? First, it meant that he believed that "we -need to a serious, sustained, unfettered debate about how closely public policy- -specifically the drinking age-- and the reality of tife in campus community are aligned" .As such, Keating signed on to participate in a nation-wide discussion of this issue. and to explain the place of alcohol in our own campus community. Why name it the "Amethyst Initiative"? "Amethyst" is derived from two Ancient Greek words: "not" (a-), and "intoxicated" (methustos). Thus, "Amethyst Initiative", or the "Not-Intoxicated Initiative". tn Greek. mythology, Amethyst was a young girl who "incurred the wrath of the God Dionysus after he became intoxicated with red wine," Amethyst cried oUI to Goddess Diana for help, who turned Amethyst into a white stone. When Dionysus realized what had happened, he cried. His tears fell into his goblet of wine, which promptly spilled over and onto the white rock, turning it purple. According to the "about" section' of amethystiuitative.org: " The purple gemstone, amethyst, was widely believed to be an antidote to the negative effects of intoxication. [... J The amethyst is thus a meaningful symbol for this initiative, which aims to encourage moderation and responsibility as an alternative £0 the drunkenness and reckless decisions about alcohol that mark the experience of many young Americans." If this sounds like it's up your alley, hop on over to our very own art gallery, which happens to be featuring a dual show by Benjamin Swallow Duke and Teresa Dunn! Both artists have used oil paint to depict social interactions, in scenes that range from ecstatic to shocking. Through the manipulation of their environments, Duke and Dunn convey interesting realities. Benjamin Swallow Duke, a Kentucky native, has a very gestural style of painting. In "Permanent City Catastrophe." viewers see a graphic and chaotic city street, abound with individuals tbat are puking, shooting at one another, juggling junk food, and toppling boxes threatening to fall. A sense of unbalance and angst pervades, while barf, blood, and birth relate a shocking human truth- violence and the dirtiness of simply being human is relevant everyday, on every street. She plays with reality, packing her interior scenes with seemingly unrelated figures, such as a baked goose, a real goose, and a figure lying behind-up on a doctor's table. Objects seem to move due 10 the interplay of lights and darks, mingled with roiling texture. You can feel her working the brush marks in an incredibly physical way, leaving passionate marks that can really stand up on their own two feet. Instead of being smoothed over, they are read on several levels as being part of a process. While Duke hegs the question, "Is this the way the worJd is in this work?" Teresa Dunn "delves into a world where animals. food and other objects are important as human characters." These two masterfully appropriate ambiguous images and assemble them into something chaotic. Come take a gander and bring your own sense of reality. Even after centuries of our forefathers figbting slavery. it still exists in this free country. Over half a million people suffer from this sinister, underworld crime; half are children and the scariest fact of all may be that much of America doesn't even know its ex.istence. This crime is called human trafficking. Human trafficking is the illegal transportation of people into other countries of which, they are forced to become sex toys, prostitutes, domestic slaves, soldiers or unwilling organ donors. These victims are mostly women and children from poor, uneducated countries who are given these false ideas of prosperity, stardom, or a loving home. -And tragically, these naive innocents are thrown into a sludge pool of physical and mental abuse, deception and loss of self-image. How can so many people be trapped in the nightmarish whirlpool of human trafficking and hardly anybody brings up the subject in newspapers or television? It's quite simple: the victims have too much fear and not-enough communication skills to get help. As stated before, most of the women and children are from developing countries such as Latin America, Africa, and the former Soviet Union, India and Asia. They never learned English or know very little of it and so they become easy prey for the traffickers. Another reason is that in other countries, women and children aren't valued as highly as men and so they are expendable. And when they become enslaved, the traffickers "season" them by gang raping, beating and psychologically degrading them until their humanity breaks. II's a horrible way to live and .die. Fortunately, there are people who have been abJe to see the grotesque tumor on America's back; people like Guadalupe Vidales, Gina Allende, and Darius Alernzadeh, who have the passionate dream of spreading the word about human trafficking and finding ways to put an end to it. These three spoke at the human trafficking meeting on OCL 8 at the University of Wisconsin- Parkside. They revealed that there are many different types of human trafficking: child soldiers, sex trafficking, domestic service. organ trafficking, illegal adoption and forced marriage. Children soldiers, where innocent children are raised to shoot weapons and serve in the miJitary, are the least in demand. while sexual exploitation is at its highest._ Guadalupe Vidales. assistant professor for the study of criminal justice, explained that Thailand openly embraces prostitution as a sturdy pillar of their economy. Many parents sell their children to pimps; disillusioned by the pimps' positive speeches of how their children will become very successful and rich. Other times, parents just sell their kids for the sake of drugs or becoming debt free. She also said that the police force there is hardly protection because they're paid off by the pimps to allow their girls to cross borders that would be otherwise illegal to do. With a country like that, it's no wonder why these girls feel trapped, helpless, and alone. After the meeting was done, I was able to speak to one of Professor Vidales' students and volunteer to study human trafficking across the globe. Her name was Amanda, a senior at Parks ide, and she decided to study domestic violence-a branch off of criminal justice-and that eventually led her to the subject of human trafficking. Her desire grew exponentially and it became her dream to see this issue brought to light by the media and even in today's politics. "I think it's sad that not many people know that this is going on." The smell of fresh popcorn with six different seasoning salts for toppings drew many a sweet tootb to the event. Main Place of Wyllie Hall became a Wonka- like cornucopia of sugar: two different flavors of cotton candy, ice-cream floats, and a chocolate fountain with apples. pretzels, and cake to drown in it. All these treats filled the bellies of many students. A blueberry pie-eating contest took place earlier at the event and got a few laughs. We even had a model dressed up as Willy Wonka that was handing out toothbrushes to help prevent cavities. At Snakes Alive you could sign your team up for the dodge ball tournament, and you could make a guess of . how many Nerds were in a jar. Whoever guessed correctly won an iPod. Overall the kickoff was a success and made us look forward to Fall Fest events to come. This bumped the Rangers down to a 6-12 record overall and a 2-7 record in the conference, while raising Southern Indiana's record to 9-10 overall and 3-6 in the conference. A real factor in the game's outcome were two costly sets that actually fell negative for the Parkside Rangers. Addie Kramer of the Rangers still managed 13 kills, 4 aces, and 3 blocks on the game. Although the Screaming Eagles pulled away with a victory on the first set of 25- 19, the Rangers came back with a vengeance in the second set clinching a 25- 19 victory. Nationally ranked D.II and NAIA teams dominated the team championship standings. Ferris State University scored a meet low 98 points followed by Indiana Tech with 159, Indiana Wesleyan with 185, Aquinas College with 194 and UW-Parkside with 195 points. On the men's side of the venue, lone senior, Rob Hansen was the only UW-Parkside competitor in the 5,000-m race. He finished in 32nd 'place. Because Parkside only fielded one athlete, they were incapable of scoring. In the 8,000-m race, the Ranger men finished 5th place out of 28 teams. Indiana Tech University scored 36 points to capture the victory followed closely by Aquinas College who scored 68 points. Fresno Pacific University, coming all the way from California, staffed a third place finish, scoring 122 points. They were closely followed by Indiana Wesleyan with 153 points and the UW-Parkside Ranger men with 185 points. This was Parks ide 's best finish at the Lucian Rosa Invite in four years. The individual race was dominated by Cameron Walter of Indiana Tech winning by 28 seconds. His finishing time was 25: 14. Parkside's top finisher The University of Wisconsin- Parkside men's and women's cross-country tearns hosted the Lucian Rosa Invite on Saturday October 11,2008 on the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course. This event featured four races; the women's 4,OOO-m and 5,000-m and the men's 5,000-m and 8,000,m. Early morning temperatures hung .in the mid-Sus and led most to believe it would be a crisp autumn cross country morning, but as the sun rose through the October sky, so did the temperature, which peaked out at 70 degrees with the sun beating down forcefully. The women's 4,OOO-m was controlled by Lindenwood University and UW-Parkside. The race was dominated by Francine Nzilampa of Lindenwood University, who finished in 14:36. The first UW-Parkside finisher was Whitney Olson who crossed the line in 15:49. Jessica Enderby was the next Parkside finisher at 15:57. Jennie Kindt, Amber Mc.clure and Kim Degener ran step for step, side by side from the middle of the pack toward the front passing nearly twenty runners each to finish l lth - L3th all at 16:04. It was very exciting to see the Ranger women's split squad run so successfully and finish so close together. The women's 5,000-m run was a little more star-studded. The winner, Justyna Mudy from Shorter College, ran a 17:26 5K. She took control of the race from the gun and extended her lead as much as twent¥ seconds during the race. Heidi Ertl, a junior from Marshfield, WI, finished 15th among collegiate runners, . " w.as Rehan Mahmood, who ran a course personal-best time of 26:26. ·When The Ranger News spoke with Rehan after the race he explained that he was surprised by the team's fifth place finish: "Initially, when I looked at our times, I didn't think we had run very strong as a team, so when I saw the team scores, I was pleasantly surprised." When asked about his personal performance, he commented, "I was happy to overcome the less-than-perfect conditions. Hopefully my teammates and I can keep up our momentum." Other Ranger scorers were Ben Orvold in 27:00, freshmen Alex Mena and Sam Albrecht running 27: II and 27: 14 respectively, and Dustin Baldwin who crossed the line in 27:38. The Ranger News also caught a word with sophomore Bryan McLoone after the race. "I ran faster than three weeks ago, but it certainly wasn't my best effort," was McLoone's opinion on the event. Mcl.oone added that he was in desperate need of water midway through the race, on his second ascent up the "giant, green llill." The Rangers had a successful day on the cross-country course, as they gear up for the post season. The men have the week off, where as the women will travel to UW-Oshkosh for the Brooks Invitational at Lake Breezey Golf Course next Saturday afternoon.
