A vote of no confidence demonstrates that a voting body believes that an individual in a position of power lacks the ability, motivation or commitment to the responsibilities of the position held, and therefore, cannot lead properly or effectively. The resolution will serve to voice the concerns of the student body of UW-Parkside over comments made by Cross in regards to 'shared governance' in the merger process of two and four-year campuses. When news of the merger hit campuses, students across the state promptly requested a voice in t his process in a joint statement under the Wisconsin State Legislation section 36.09(5). This statute states that students "shall have primary responsibility for advising the chancellor regarding the formulation and review of policies concerning student life, services, and interests." Garden of Eatin' (GOE) was founded by veteran and UW-Parkside alumnus Andy Berg. While attending a sports nutrition and fitness class with Professor Stefani Strauss-Thompkins, Berg was required to work 5-10 hours of volunteer work within the community, but was unable to make the time while having two children, working full time, and studying as a full time student. In place of the volunteer hours Berg was able to propose a written plan for a community garden in ANDY BERG Kenosha but with "a bit of twist.". Support from community The fundamental difference between GOE and other community gardens is that everything used to raise the crops and everything harvested is donated by and to the local community. Berg explains that everything from "seeds, trowels, shovels, gloves, and labor" are all volunteers and donations. GOE receives many of its volunteers throughout the year from United Way and during annual events such as "Make a Difference Day" at UWParkside. Berg is happy with the help that he receives, but is always searching for more volunteers, especially during the summer when volunteer numbers are lower. March 12 Summer Registration Begins | March 13 Active Minds presents the Realities of Eating Disorders Creativity-Community-Commerce / The Business of Jazz | 5p.m. | Bedford Concert Hall KRYSTAL DODGE thorn008@rangers. uwp. edu On Feb. 21, Active Minds hosted an event called Realities of Eating Disorders at UW-Parkside. Professor of ethnic studies Heather Kind-Keppel, who has a master's degree in counseling, spoke at the event. The event brought to light how devastating an eating disorder can be and how prevalent they are. According to Anorexia Nervosa and Related Eating Disorders (ANRED), "Without treatment up to 20 % of people with a serious eating disorder die." Active Minds club Active Minds is a club at UWParkside that was revived in the fall semester of 2017. The president is Robin Zelek. Active Minds is a mental health awareness group whose goal is to remove the stigma surrounding mental health. Zelek said, "We chose eating disorders because it's a topic that is important and does not get talked about enough." Active Minds has suicide prevention training on March 7 at 5 p.m. in the Walnut Room at UWParkside. Last semester they held events teaching about Schizophrenia and mental health resources. Zelek said, "We plan to schedule more events and continue to educate and bring awareness of a variety of mental health issues." They have meetings every Wednesday at 5 p.m. and more information is available on Campus Connect. What is an eating disorder? An eating disorder is a mental disorder, that is characterized by abnormal eating habits that negatively affect a person's mental and physical health. Eating disorders can affect both men and women. Eating disorders can be invisible. It is a disease that you must learn to manage for the rest of your life. While treatment is an important step it is not enough by itself. There can be triggers that brings back the behavior. Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge Eating Disorder are the different disorders that were discussed at the Active Minds event. People with Anorexia Nervosa have an obsessive fear of gaining weight, and they fiercely limit the quantity of food they eat. Bulimia Nervosa is a cycle of binge eating, which uses vomiting, excessive exercise, and laxatives to compensate. In Binge Eating Disorder, people will lose control over their food consumption, but they do not try to compensate for it like Bulimia Nervosa. Eating disorders are not really about the food, but more about control . Sometimes life is so chaotic that a person feels they just need control over something. It does not start out as a full-fledged disorder but can quickly turn in to one. Warning Signs There are a variety of warning signs to watch for. Things such as chronic dieting, constant weight fluctuations, and obsession with calories and fat content are things to watch out for. They may also switch between periods of fasting and overeating. They can become withdrawn, depressed, lethargic, and isolated. There also tends to be ritualistic eating patterns. The problem is that eating disorders can manifest in a myriad of ways in different people. If you are worried about someone, you need to ask them the hard questions. You need to pay attention and be an advocate for them. There is help, and they will need a solid support network to get this devastating condition under control. JOSEPH CANNING canniO01 @rangers.uwp. edu UW-Parkside is known for its strong pre-health undergraduate program and other undergraduate programs in healthcare which draw hundreds of students to the school; however, UW-Parkside also offers numerous post-graduate degrees in the medical field. Joining the many other master's degrees offered by the College of Natural and Health Sciences, a master's degree in clinical mental health counselling will become available in fall of this year. The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents approved the clinical mental health counselling urogram last October, and it was officially announced on UW-Parkside's website on November 9. Dr. Emmanuel Otu, Founding Dean of the College of Natural and Health Sciences and Professor of Chemistry, spoke to the Ranger News about the new program. Even though the degree is not available until the fall, he said that there are already seven applicants. What to expect Classes within the program cover multicultural relationships, family issues, general health psychology, psychotherapy, general counselling, coping mechanisms, and much more. There is a graduation requirement of 60 credit-hours, meaning a student would have to take 20 courses that are worth three credit-hours apiece. They are a mix of online, hybrid, and traditional classes. The program as a whole has been specifically designed to address a change in licensure requirements for Licensed Professional Counselors in Wisconsin; the new requirements will be in effect as of this September. Dr. Otu said these courses "run through the whole area of what you could consider health—mental health, trauma." Referring to the recent tragic shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, he also said that some classes teach "how to help families deal with situations like that, because, for their lifetime, they have lost somebody." Students would be instructed on how to help patients cope with loss and other trauma over extended periods of time. Employment opportunities The potential future employment for graduates of the new program is widely varied; they could be employed by anyone who needs the services of a Licensed Professional Counselor. "They can work at mental health institutions and hospitals, inpatient for] outpatient mental health units. Usually, they'll work alongside psychiatrists," assured Otu. He continued, "the graduates would be the ones who help the patients go through the day-to-day ups and downs of their lives." Graduates of the program would also be equipped to work in schools and, potentially, to start their own businesses. Regarding the current supply of mental health counselors, Dr. Otu said, "there are not enough... they are needed almost everywhere fin Wisconsin]." In fact, the need for counselors is primarily around Kenosha, Madison, and Green Bay. Otu also pointed out the opportunities for mental health specialists in the more rural areas of the state, where mental health care is generally much harder to obtain. Consider a graduate degree Dr. Otu wanted students to know that their education does not have to end after they receive their bachelor's degree as getting a master's degree may help a student get the job they truly want. In the last six years, he has helped Parkside to add four new master's programs in the College of Natural and Health Sciences alone. A fifth master's program—healthcare administration—has been developed but is still pending the approval of the UW Board of Regents. Anyone who is interested in obtaining a master's degree in clinical health counselling from UW-Parkside can head to www.uwp.edu and look for "programs" under the "academics" tab to learn more. Garden: A community project board members a place to perform their duties during the winter months. Berg is searching for any help concerning the renovations at the new office, which includes siding, replacing windows, and general carpentry. Completing the office renovations will give GOE more space to operate in the months they are not planting or working with the gardens. GOE will also be hosting an event related to UW-Parkside's Big Read. Professor Peggy James will be speaking at GOE's new office of the Big Read's book "Station Eleven." The office is located on 4605 38th avenue, Kenosha and the event will be open to UWParkside students and local community members. To the garden Despite the great strides GOE has made since it conception, there is always more work to be done and more plants to be grown. Berg and his fellow members of GOE are continuously looking to do more in the community and grow their organization. What started out as an assignment for a class has turned into a project that offers relief and joy felt by both those receiving the food from the gardens and those growing it. The dress code to be revisited was concerning what females are and aren't allowed to wear, such as yoga pants or leggings. The work session was not called to make and move forward with decisions revising the dress code, but to only make suggestions on what should change. Suggestions made were that leggings and yoga pants are to be allowed worn as pants, tanks be worn as tops and students be supplied proper clothing instead of being sent home when dress coded. Another work session will be scheduled for another time later this year. On Feb. 9,2018, the shutdown occurred from 12:01 AM to 5:30 AM. A bill had reached the Senate for voting on Thursday night that would keep the government funded, eliminate caps on its spending, and temporarily suspend the debt ceiling. Attempting to combat excessive spending, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) filibustered to stall the Vote. The government briefly shut down, but the Senate rules prevented the filibuster from continuing past 1:00 AM. Soon after the disagreement was set aside, a deal was reached. The funding bill passed, raising defense, non-defense, and disaster relief spending by over $300 billion. Outstanding Faculty Award presented to Parkside instructor Michelle Gabor NAOMI DORNFELD dornfOO 1 @rangers. uwp. edu UW-Parkside instructor Michelle Gabor, an associate business lecturer, was recognized by the University of Wisconsin MBA Consortium as an honorable recipient of the 2017 UW MBA Outstanding Faculty Award this February. Class nomination In Oct. 2017, students enrolled in the UW system's MBA programs were given an opportunity to nominate staff for the Outstanding Faculty Award. Michelle Gabor, an MBA program graduate, celebrated UW-Parkside alumna and incoming online instructor, was named a noteworthy candidate by students enrolled in her Accounting Foundations course that she taught in the fall semester. According to the feedback retrieved for consideration by the UW MBA Consortium, Gabor was noted for being remarkably responsive and deliberate in communication throughout the term. The online Consortium announcement referenced one student's opinion, saying that "Michelle provided excellent feedback on all the work we've done through throughout the course. Her feedback was in fact one of the most valuable part[s] in learning the subject." Another student said, "Professor Gabor is the most timely instructor I've had in terms of responding to questions and grading assignments." A strategy for success As identified through the feedback received from students, what sets her apart in an online classroom setting is her unusual accessibility and attentiveness to students and and their work. "I remember being a student," Gabor states. "When the assignment you receive on Wednesday is due Friday and you're not getting the help you need, the need will continue into the next week and so on." As many students can likely attest, when a building block of course content is not fully grasped or late work accumulates, it becomes difficult to succeed throughout the duration of the class. One strategy Gabor implemented through the term, to be available for assistance as needed, was a 24-hour response window; if a student posted a question, she would either respond within that time frame or make a comment that the concern would be addressed at a later time. The aim of instruction Although timely responses, thorough feedback and consistent communication are indicators that Michelle provides excellent service as an instructor, it is the conviction for the responsibility of educators that drives her to deliver excellence in the classroom. In a reflection of how to approach growth as an educator, Michelle says that "it's really about how the students learn. They're the ones paying the money. We owe it to them to do a good job." In light of these comments, students and faculty view Cross's comments as a dismissal. The statute of shared governance clearly indicates that students should have a say in this process, and so far, there has been little indication that students have been and/or will be represented. The concern is not necessarily about the merger itself. Acting PSG President Keough Lemieux wrote in an email to PSG Senate members clarifying that the issue is not about whether the merger is good or otherwise but rather, "the issue is that we [were] not included in the discussion of this plan that will have a lasting impact on our state." This is not the first time that students have gone unrepresented. The Segregated University fees distribution process in 2015 and the Freedom of Expression mandate that passed last winter have brought big changes without proper student representation. The UW-Madison chapter of the American Association of University Professors(AAUP) \ ^ / ENCORE FRAP HOUR Hall Price Frsppuccinos! Wednesday and Fridays 9:30AM-10:30AM wrote a letter rebuking President Cross for his disregard of shared governance, which includes faculty and academic staff, is deeply concerning. "It does not bode well for the success of your policies that you consider shared governance to be nothing more than an impediment to progress, " the AAUP wrote. Cross responded to the backlash stating, "I think that there's confusion about who should be involved in what and how." "I would argue that shared governance has, in some ways, equated decisions at all levels on all issues, and that's not, in my mind, appropriate," Cross added. Lemieux adds in his email to the PSG senate, "If we [lose] shared governance this could mean a dark path for the UW in the future, one where student input on decisions that have the chance to alter our lives continues to be disregarded." As of press-time the result of the PSG resolution, held on Feb. 26, has not been determined. ERBERT & GERBERT'S Wyllie Market Mon-Thurs 730 AM- 7 PM Frkiay 730 AM-2 PM KIARA FOX fox00034@rangers. uwp. edu On Feb. 16, Kurt Bergendahl, a UW-Parkside police officer, demonstrated some tips and tricks for basic self-defense, as part of the ongoing Big Read event series that focuses on "Station Eleven" by Emily St. James Mendel. The event also served as a preview for some of his future self-defense classes. Warning signs Bergendahl started the event by talking about personal space and how to know if someone is going to attack you. He says," What we have to do is think about what our normal distance is when we are talking to people." Generally, people prefer about three feet of personal space, and anything beyond that can make them uncomfortable or be a sign of possible attack. Most of the time, one can pick up on ques of an attack. Bergendahl mentions that some of these warning postures include direct eye contact, clenched fists or flared nostrils. A post-apocalyptic world In order to tie it back to the Big Read theme, Bergendahl gave some self-defense tips that are meant to be used in a post-apocalyptic world. Guns would not be available in that situation, so Bergendahl states that "bare minimum we need to keep ourselves safe." Students learned that in a postapocalyptic world, anything can become a weapon. Bergendahl showed how a pen can be "a real effective tool to the eye and the face" by demonstrating that it can be used similarly to a knife. Therefore, the use of knives was also including in the demonstration. He reviewed the 21 foot rule as a rule of thumb, which states that" within 21 feet, even if I shoot somebody... [in] the heart or in the head, at 21 feet they can still stab me." If a person were running, then a shot to the head or heart does not prevent them from stabbing someone because they could continue to be affected by inertia and gravity. The real world But in today's world, guns are an issue. Bergendahl and Ranger Bear showed students how to change the target of a shooter by throwing objects at the shooter to offer multiple targets and distract them. Another real world example was learning the difference between self defense and battery. Bergendahl states that "self-defense is [when] they did something, I reacted and did something back, and then 1 backed off. Battery is [ when] they did something, I reacted and defended myself, and now they are on the ground and I continue [to lash out]." Overall, survival skills are something that anyone can relate to and that can come in handy. John Aasen, a student that attended the event, said that it was useful because either "the worst does happen and it is an apocalypse or just regular self defense," He continued to say, "I think the skills we learned are very useful." The event was successful in relating to "Station Eleven" and the Big Read and it also provided relevant skills for the modern world. Jeevan, a paparazzo turned EMT, runs onstage to try and save him, but his efforts seem to be in vain. Instead, while a cardiologist from the audience does CPR to try to revive Arthur, Jeevan goes to comfort Kirsten, a little girl who was acting as one of Lear's daughters, and the main protagonist of the book. After trying to revive Arthur, Jeevan receives a call from one of his friends, Hua, who works in a hospital. Hua tells him to leave town as quickly as he can, that there is an epidemic of epic proportions on the way. Jeevan decides to hole up in his brother's apartment building with mass amounts of food instead. Flash forward to the future: Twenty years after the outbreak, civilization is destroyed. Kirsten is travelling with a band of musicians and actors, the Travelling Symphony, and again acting in King Lear. Her troupe is there to preserve human culture, to not let people forget where they came from. They play Shakespeare because the people like it; they like to see "the best of humanity". Upon the caravans is a Star Trek quote: "Survival is insufficient". Kirsten keeps Station Eleven comics on her, gifts from Arthur when she was young. They were written by his first wife, Miranda, and she treasures them. Great readability and constant themes The first thing 1 noticed about Station Eleven was how it sucked you in. If you are worried about the time commitment to the book, do not be. The read is smooth and easy, captivating and compelling. The main characters, Kirsten, Miranda, and Arthur, are all multifaceted and interesting. Kirsten is the main protagonist of the story and she values culture of all kinds, values anything that preserves her humanity. Throughout the book there are stories of people clinging to culture in whatever form it takes. Before the collapse of civilization, Miranda throws herself into her work, creating Station Eleven (the comic) and Arthur wholeheartedly loves to act. After the collapse, Kirsten inherits Arthur's love for acting, playing in "high-brow" Shakespeare shows, while still collecting the "low-brow" media of comics, bringing Miranda and Arthur's interests together in her life. Kirsten's best friend, August, collects TV guides, despite the lack of TV. Clarke, Arthur's friend who escaped the collapse with Arthur's second wife and son, creates a "Museum of Civilization" inside an old airport to preserve the history of the world he once knew. Even by rejecting culture, the theme of culture still exists. Station Eleven takes place in the aftermath of a devastating pandemic. Tyler, Arthur's biological son, rejected the old world's culture and tried to create his own, becoming a lecherous prophet. But still, he practises a religion that goes back thousands of years and even obsesses over the Station Eleven comics in the same way that Kirsten does. Culture affects every aspect of life, regardless of what the person wants. Overall thoughts "Station Eleven" was definitely one of the best books 1 h ave read all year and, though the library is out of free copies, I hi ghly recommend going to find one at your local library or bookstore. Little was known about the fledgling enterprise, except that they intended to develop an open-world roleplaying game that had its foundations in historical accuracy. For three years they languished in obscurity, until a Kickstarter campaign in 2014 brought them over 1.5 million dollars in funding. Their proposed game was to be called "Kingdom Come: Deliverance." After years of development and uncertainty, "Kingdom Come: Deliverance" was released on Feb. 13,2018. Although generally well-received, it has generated some polarizing reactions from fans and critics for its high level of difficulty, its uncompromising dedication to realism and the presence of an overwhelming number of technical issues. Trading fantasy for history "Kingdom Come: Deliverance" takes place in Bohemia in the early 15th century. You play as Henry, a blacksmith's son who becomes embroiled in a political conflict that threatens the very future of the Holy Roman Empire. After his village is burned to the ground, Henry is taken into the service of a lord who is willing to train him. This is not a fantastical tale of heroism; Henry is, and will forever be, a peasant with little to no status in the world. The game goes to great lengths to present its audience with an accurate, unadulterated picture of history. As such, Henry, being a peasant, is unable to read or write. If you want to decipher coded messages or read books, you are going to have to find a scribe willing to teach you how to read. Henry is also an untrained combatant, meaning that any of your initial attempts at battle will yield hilarious (and sometimes disastrous) results. Warhorse Studios have painstakingly developed a combat-system for "Kingdom Come: Deliverance" that closely resembles traditional Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA).This means that fights are slow and deliberate, and will easily end in your premature demise if you rush in unprepared. Players will also have to make sure that they keep Henry healthy. If you forget to eat, you will starve. If you leave wounds unattended, you will succumb to those wounds. This is a heavy dose of realism for a generation of gamers have grown accustomed to fantasy roleplaying games like "Skyrim" and "Dragon Age." Czech out these bugs "Kingdom Come: Deliverance" is a game developed by a small team that shoots for the stars in terms of scope, and this is evident in the perfonnance of the game itself. There are many bugs, or errors, that occur throughout the game's vast land, and these go a long way towards diminishing the realism that is so intrinsic to the experience. Technical glitches will often distract players during tense story sequences, and some performance issues may even prevent the game from being played at all. On the bright side, Warhorse Studios has been very open in its commitment towards continued support for the game, meaning that these issues will most likely be addressed in the future. Despite its many problems, "Kingdom Come: Deliverance" has provided me with an experience, unparalleled in terms of historical realism, that 1 will not soon forget. Underneath the glitches, there is an expansive and beautiful game waiting to be played by those who are not faint of heart. "Kingdom Come: Deliverance" is a flawed masterpiece. This Week in History: Murder in Stockholm BY RORY LARSON Iarso066@rangers.uwp.edu One of the most influential leaders in European politics in the 1970s-80s was Prime Minister of Sweden, Olof Palme. The Social Democratic Party of Sweden had control when Palme came to power as Prime Minister and was responsible for stabilizing and improving Sweden by creating the most expansive social services in the world. Palme was an advocate of Sweden's moderate socialism and championed the wellbeing of his country. From challenging South Africa's Apartheid to tiying to resolve the tensions during the Iran-Iraq War, Palme can best be described as a European leader in ethics. Palme's life was as intriguing as his death was shocking. In what is often likened to a Swedish version of the J.F.K. assassination, Palme's life was cut short by a murder that to this day, remains unsolved. The specifics The morning of Feb. 28,1986, Olof Palme left for work, dismissing his bodyguards for the day for a bit of privacy. His work day began much like any other with calls and meetings till noon, when he had a single hour to himself before the official government luncheon at one that afternoon. No one knows what Palme did in his hour alone before the luncheon, but he showed up twenty minutes late to the function angry, upset, and refusing to tell anyone what was wrong. Only as the day went on did he seem to calm down. When Palme went home for the evening, his wife discussed going to go see a movie and maybe even meeting up with their son there, and decided to take the subway to the movie. Witnesses who saw Palme reported that when he got to the station he seemed nervous and moving in an odd manner. Palme arrived at the cinema with his wile, meeting his son and his son's girlfriend there. When the movie was finished, Palme decided he and his wife would walk home instead of taking the subway. Though it was late, windy, 19 degrees, over a mile walk, and his wife was tired, the two began to make their journey home. While Mr. and Mrs. Palme were walking home, a witness recalled seeing a tall and suspicious looking man in a dark coat walking across the street. He observed the man walking up to Palme and his wife before the assailant suddenly grabbed Palme by the shoulder and fired two shots into his back with a handgun. The stranger checked to make sure Palme was dead before running off. Who killed him? Police exhaustively searched for Palme's killer, but to no avail. After two years they took Christer Pettersson to court for the murder, but he was acquitted because they were unable to produce the murder weapon. The police had made supposed errors in procedures during his line up, and there was a lack of a clear motive. 1 here are dozens of conspiracy theories on Palme's murder but some of the most popular ones include that it was an assassination by a member of the Yugoslavian security service or that perhaps Victor Gunnarson, a Swedish extremist with a dislike for Palme, may have been the one to fire the fateful shots. Despite the numerous theories many still believe that it was Pettersson who killed Palme. Pettersson was a known criminal with a history of drug and alcohol abuse and had been once incarcerated for manslaughter. It is speculated that Pettersson may have mistook Palme for one of his ding dealers that frequented that particular path home, and that it was all a case of mistaken identity. Unfortunately, Pettersson died in 2004 and the case remains open to this day. February 28,2018 THE RANGER NEWS CULTURE | 5 "Sing Street": When impressing a crush goes too far Everyone wants to start a band at some point, but how many actually manage to pull it off? ROSEMARY SCHWEITZER schwe037@rangers. uwp. edu The '80s was a strange time. A time of perms and neon clothing, but for our purposes today, we will focus on the really good music: Duran Duran, Michael Jackson, The Police, Bon Jovi, a-ha, Bowie, Queen and Madonna to just barely scratch the surface. "Sing Street", the 2016 romance/drama film out of Ireland, on the other hand, was not satisfied to just scratch the surface. The basics The film centers around a ragtag band of teens attending Synge Street Christian Brothers School in Dublin, led by Conor Lawlor. Conor's parents are constantly fighting, and when the family falls on hard times, it is Conor's education that suffers. Plucked from his reputable and expensive school, the fifteen year old was sent to Synge Street, where the strict Brother Baxter and a number of bullies make each school day a nightmare. We have all been there Having only made one friend in his first week, Conor's attention is drawn by a mysterious beauty across the street from his school. So what does our young Lawlor do? He tries to impress her, of course. How does he try to impress her ? By asking her to be in a music video for his band, obviously. So he has the girl for his band's music video, great. Now all he needs is a band! Sing Street is something of a departure from the other movies in UW-Parkside's foreign film series with its quick and witty dialog, sardonic characters, and up-beat soundtrack. If Aquarius, Things to Come, or The Salesman were not quite your cup of tea, give this one a try. Sing Street roused audiences with four awards for best original song, two for best use of music in a film, one for best actor in a supporting role, and best overlooked film of the year. Add a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture (musical or comedy) to that and a thirty eight other nominations, it could not be a terrible movie. Still not convinced? Jeez Director John Carney explores the relationships between siblings, parents, friends and crushes in this stellar coming of age story. Now, I am not afraid to admit that I am a little sick of comingof-age stories, with their profound teenagers and overused cliches, but Carney manages to put an original spin on the typical story that is so relatable. We have all wanted to impress our crushes, we have all had fights with our family, we have all wanted to be original, and at some point, we have all wanted to run away and abandon our lives. Sing Street encapsulates this in a one hour and forty five minute morsel that, at the very least, left me craving more. If you missed it at UW-Parkside, check it out on Netflix or your local library because, if you are anything like me, you will not regret it. Nix's art depicts many everyday locations from shopping malls, laundromats, and salons to more unique ones such as a space center and a control room in an unknown context. Each model is meticulously crafted and seems so lifelike that at a glance one might not even know it is a model. It s i the details that make each scene so intriguing and yet so haunting. The photos depict only the manufactured and natural environment with no living subjects anywhere to be found which leaves the viewer wondering, "where did the people go?" A dark future This lack of humans is no coincidence and has an express purpose. Nix's exhibit challenges us to ask ourselves deeper questions about the future of life on Earth and the impact or our presence here. If this were truly the apocalypse, would we not see some sign of bodies, or have they already turned to dust with the passing of time? The images give us some idea of when they may have been taken but are vague enough in setting to leave us guessing. Is it tomorrow or twenty years from now? Nature seems to be taking these spaces back over, but ever so slowly. In "Library" we can see a tree growing directly from the linoleum tile floor. It has grown tall and is peeking through the roof, giving us a glimpse of a blue sky just beyond the building. In every photograph, we are left to wonder what is beyond the windows in the outdoors, each giving just a smal glance of what might be out there after we are long gone. Another world The viewer must question not only what is out beyond these partial views of singular rooms but what happened to make it this way. Whether humans have died off or simply up and departed the planet, leaving behind the ghost of the expansive civilization that once thrived there. In another photo entitled "Space Center" space suits of varying size are displayed in the center of a room scattered with futuristic artifacts and covered in moss. The suits and an alien purple sky outside the cracked windows evoke the thought that we may not even be on Earth anymore. This gives rise, once again, to the question of when these photos were taken. If the photo was indeed taken on another planet, how long could it have taken us to get there? If moss and other plants have grown and taken over the space, how long has it been abandoned? Above and beyond all else, "The City" tries to convey the message that the universe began in a certain state, and it will always return to that state, no matter how long it takes. JOSEPH CANNING canni001@rangers.uwp.edu It is a leaden November day; the washed-out sun glints off the helmets of thousands of gathered soldiers who march shoulder-to-shoulder in synchronized blocks down a wide road. Crowds look on. Behind the soldiers there are columns of tanks, artillery, missiles, cars, and behind them, more soldiers. Above it all, fighter jets are screaming and belching fire. Now, imagine those troops are Americans. Imagine that street is Pennsylvania Avenue. Trump's parade That image may very well materialize in the coming monthsUnited States Secretary of Defense James Mattis confirmed on Wednesday, Feb. 7 during a White House press briefing that deliberation was underway at the Pentagon for the first American military parade since the Cold War. In fact, five different versions of the parade are under consideration. One version suggests timing the parade with the First World War's centennial. The request for such a parade came directly from U.S. President Donald Trump. The Washington Post reported that his words to defease staff were: "I want a parade like the one in France." The President was referring to the Bastille Day parade held in Paris each July. Wrong time But the prospect of a display of American military might is worrying given the current political climate. Tensioas between Russia and the United States bear upsetting resemblance to the Cold War. On the same day Mattis spoke to the press, Russian mercenaries attacked U.S. troops and their Syrian allies openly. Russia later reported that American bombers had engaged Russian troops. Conflicts between nations guised as support for foreign allies, so-called proxy wars, were once a common occurrence between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. The current war in Syria certainly fits that description. Infamous for his sophomoric and provocative language online, Trump repeatedly goaded North Korean Leader Kim Jong-Un last September by referring to him has "Little Rocket Man" and threatening that the dictatorship wouldn't "be around much longer!" Those comments were in response to that country's developing nuclear program and militaristic aggression. Tramp's infatuation with atomic roulette puts millions of lives at risk. So does this military parade; it answers aggression with more aggression, and only makes the U.S. look weaker for it. Historically, America has hearkened to the sensible advice of Theodore Roosevelt "speak softly and carry a big stick." A capricious show of force now would suggest to the world that America's stick is perhaps not as big as it used to be. Wrong place Such a military parade would also be contradictory to the values and national spirit that American soldiers and veterans have fought to protect; many veterans have already voiced their concerns. The U.S. may have been forged in an armed straggle, but it never carried the same military legacy as countries like France or Russia that still hold military parades. Both of those countries hold annual parades to commemorate pivotal wars in their nations' histories. Tramp's motivations for his parade remain unspoken. In addition to being disrespectful, provoking, and baffling, the parade would surely be expensive. A military source told NPR costs might be as high as $50 million, while the Washington Post quoted a more conservative figure of $10 to $30 million. Regardless, unjustifiable expenses and popular outcry seem sure to rain out Trump's parade in time. February 28,2018 Community Connections: V^teraiTcTmilitary: there are services available KRYSTAL DODGE thom008@rangers. uwp. edu Nationwide, there is an increasing number of veterans entering higher education. While these students vary from a myriad of backgrounds and situations they are considered nontraditional students. These students tend to be older, and are considered transfer students due to the college credits earned while in the military. According to the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), "One of the biggest frustrations voiced by veterans is the daunting and unfamiliar bureaucracy of higher education." Some Veterans have difficulty adjusting to civilian and academic life. They may also have to recover from physical and psychological injuries sustained during their time of service. According to Villanova University, veterans face five issues while returning to college. These issues are being overwhelmed, adjusting to a new rhythm, isolation, post-traumatic stress, and boredom. According to the AAC&U these issues may be the cause for veterans not using all benefits available to them. They state, "Recent data from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) show that only a small percentage of veterans use all of their federal education benefits." There are many assistance programs available to veterans and active-duty service members. Tuition assistance and housing cost assistance are available for full time students. There is also assistance available to their survivors or dependents. The benefits available to veterans are the GI Bill, Vocational Rehabilitation, Veterans Education Grant, and many more that are listed on the UW-ParkThe Conservative Ranger: "Let's be America, not Iceland" in regards to Down Syndrome JIMMY GRAHAM graha028@rangers. uwp. edu In Oct. of 2017, Frank Stephens, a man with Down Syndrome and a Down Syndrome rights advocate, spoke in front of the U.S. Congress. He began his speech by stating, "I am a man with Down Syndrome and my life is worth living." The main point he was advocating for was that people with Down Syndrome have as much of a right to life as everyone else and unborn babies should not be aborted just because they have this condition. He believes people with Down Syndrome should not be seen as a burden to their parents, but as a blessing for all the joy they bring to their families. Iceland and Down Syndrome Frank ends his speech by saying "Let's be America, not Iceland or Denmark. Let's pursue answers, not final solutions." What he means is that the U.S. should not have the same attitude towards people with Down Syndrome as Iceland and many of the other so called "progressive" Scandinavian countries. Many in Iceland brag how they have nearly "eradicated" Down Syndrome from the country. The way they have gone about it is by encouraging parents to abort unborn babies that are found to have Down Syndrome and other things that are considered to them as birth defects. Many Down Syndrome and Pro-Life advocates find this practice to be outrageous and equivalent to genocide. Ohio's legislation towards down syndrome abortions On the contrary to Iceland, Ohio has done the opposite in its attitude toward Down Syndrome abortions. The State has recently passed a piece of legislation that I consider to be the right step in protecting the rights of unborn infants with the condition. This bill essentially makes it illegal in the state of Ohio to abort any unborn baby that is diagnosed with Down Syndrome. Any doctor who does can face up to 18 months in prison. My thoughts on this issue As someone who is Pro-Life, I am in full agreement with Frank Stephens on this issue. People with Down Syndrome should not be aborted just because they have this condition; they should have just as much a right to live as everyone else. I have personally met a few people with Down Syndrome. The people I met with the condition were very happy, caring, had great senses of humor and were productive members of society. It seems to me that many people view Down Syndrome as a burden to live with; however, that is not true. People with this condition may at times need a little extra help, but that does not stop them from leading productive and fulfilling lives and bringing joy to the lives of their loved ones. A Message from Nature: Bloodshed in environmentalism ADELANA AKINDES akindO01 @rangers. uwp. edu Something I don't hear about too often is the bloodshed involved in environmental activism occurring around the planet. Industry continues to engulf the world and is pushing its way into every untapped natural resource, every land that never belonged to them. There are people who are fighting back and speaking up about the environment. There are people who dedicate their lives to defend the land and to defend each other. Often they are the original people of the land, the indigenous people with cultures, roots and livelihoods tied directly to the environment in which they live. And increasingly so, those who speak out are targeted and killed in order to silence the message that they carry. Countries in Latin America and Southeast Asia have the highest rates for these murders, with Brazil and the Philippines being the most deadly countries for environmental activism. Most of the violence takes place over land rights disputes, involving huge industries-the main ones being mining, agribusiness, damming, logging and peaching-and the indigenous communities of the area. Members of these industries often partner with gangs and militia, and in this way, they are able to kill those in opposition without repercussions. Last year, a documented 197 people have been murdered due to their environmental protests, which averages four people a week. The numbers have been compiled by Global Witness, a group that has been keeping track of these specific types of murders since 2002. Since then, over 1,000 murders have been documented, with the true number believed to be far higher. Some of the more well-known victims include environmentalist nun Dorothy Stang and indigenous land rights environmentalist Bertha Caceres. Yet far more victims have gone unnamed and unreported, and usually none get justice in the end. I still remember when I was first exposed to this information. It was in my Peoples of Southeast Asia class, an anthropology course I took here at UW-Parkside two years ago. I learned about this beautiful ceremony that occurs in the northern forests of Thailand, where monks wrapped the robes that were typically reserved for them around the trunks of trees. These "ecology monks" saw the deforestation in Thailand, caused by logging activity, and developed this practice in response. By ordaining trees as if they were monks, as if the trees were being initiated into monkhood, the monks were making a statement about the spiritual nature of the forests. I wasn't prepared to hear that one of these monks was stabbed to death. This type of peaceful environmental activism was still seen as a threat. The fight for indigenous people's rights to their own land is occurring across the planet. Even in countries where this extreme violence is not taking place, the battle is still going on. Just look at Standing Rock in North Dakota, or No Back 40 in Wisconsin. It's important to be aware of what environmentalism looks like across the world and across cultures. People are risking their lives everyday, armed with nothing but their voices. Adelana Akindes is a senior majoring in environmental sciences and is the treasurer of PEC. side website. Their mission statement is "Our goal is to serve each of our military and veteran students and family members as you have served our country. Your service to our country means something at Parkside!" The office is located in D-189 Wyllie Hall, and can be contacted by calling (262) 595-2497. The university also provides the Military and Veteran Success Center. The center is located across from the . Cashier's Office in Wyllie D-192. The purpose of the center is to help military and veteran students to transition into the academic community. It is open Monday through Friday from 9 am. until 11 pm. It is a quiet place to study or to meet other military or veteran students. UW-Parkside has their own Veteran's Admissions Counselor, Sergio Correa. He is in the admissions office, can be reached at (262) 595-2300. He assists with the application and benefit process and prior learning credit. Kenosha County has a Division of Veteran services. The office is located at 8600 Sheridan Road in Kenosha, and is open Monday through Friday 8 am. to 5 pm. Their phone number is (262) 605-6690. They assist veterans and their families obtain local, state, and federal benefits. They specialize in assisting in the claim process from start to finish. There are many organizations on campus and in the community to assist veterans. It is important for each person to be their own advocate, and to make use of these opportunities. One of the biggest obstacles is not knowing what is available or where to go to get assistance. During the first week of the semester, a lost freshman misunderstood their class schedule and wandered the tunnels beneath campus. Down in the darkness, they saw a horrific sight. A massive portal to an alternate dimension has opened beneath Wylie Hall. "It is probably just another project from the Chemistry Club," said Scruffy, a member of the custodial staff. "I would tiy not to stress about it." Bearly News is run by college students, so regardless of Scruffy's advice, we stressed about it. After our investigation of recent trends on campus, we have justifiable reasons to believe that the portal has been opened by Cthulhu, the ancient cosmic entity from Lovecraftian lore. Call of calculus Things began to appear amiss when the Necronomicon became the most popular text at the bookstore. Similarly, saggy pants and ugg boots have been replaced by the newest fashion trend of black cloaks with shadowy hoods. Administration even reports that thousands of requests have poured in for the school to add a certificate program for Eldritch magic. "The university takes pride in its acceptance of people from all ethnic backgrounds, so 1 wanted to keep an open mind," a campus recruiter commented, "However, I did notice an abnormally large spike in attendance from lizard people this semester. But hey, if it raises the graduation rate. I am perfectly okay with it." These strange clues around campus seem to verify the theory that Cthulhu has come to conquer UW-Parkside and add it to his subterranean kingdom. This opens the door for another question: what needs to be done about it? Grovelling 101 Hypothetically, exterminators could deal with the portal, but all of the qualified candidates have called the desolate Parkside tunnels "far too spooky" for them. Therefore, until the portal closes, all students are advised to appease any of Cthulhu's demands to avoid the consequences of his wrath. The RITA's costume department has been commissioned to add tentacles to Ranger Bear, and Straylight will now only be accepting submissions written in R'leyh Glyphs. Ruxpin, our hired private eye, worked hard to dredge up some details while the Bearly News hoped someone could help to answer our questions. Questions unanswered "What do you mean, 'where did Ranger Bear come from'?" An alumnus asked, laughing over the phone, "The woods, of course!" "He lives in Petrifying Springs, right by campus!" His handler told the Bearly News, when we approached Ranger Bear at a press meeting. The bear himself would not take any questions. "He's been here longer than 1 have," the Dean of Students told us, "Longer than anyone, really. He's recently celebrated his 50th anniversary, you know." Sudoku His 50th anniversary? We started and turned to see the head archivist with a crazed look in her eyes. "I've waited years for this day, to find someone else as suspicious as 1 am." The picture is attached below, the earliest known image of Ranger Bear. 8 I SPORTS THE RANGER NEWS February 28,2018 Rangers suffer setback vs. No. 19 Winona State ROSEMONT, III. - Day two at the Rosemont Dome featured plenty of action for Parkside Softball, including both games ending in walkoff fashion. In the first game, the Rangers defeated Findlay 5-4 in nine innings off a Morgan Sikon game-winning single, but the Rangers saw Ashland use a two-run bottom of the seventh inning in game two to suffer a 4-3 defeat. In game one, Parkside was heading to the bottom of the seventh inning down 4-3 and scored the tying run off an error by the Findlay center fielder with two outs. After a scoreless eighth inning, Kellie Fenza was placed on second base and Megan Aliverti used a bunt single to push the winning run over to third. After a strikeout, Sikon delivered the game-winner, a single to left field that scored Fenza and gave Parkside the win. Earlier in the game, the Rangers took a 2-0 lead after one inning thanks to an RBI double by Aliverti and an Adrien Hall RBI single. Findlay grabbed the lead back with a three-run second inning. The Rangers tied it up at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth off a Jessica Shields RBI single and Findlay took the lead back in the top of the seventh inning. Alyssa Hrncar pitched a fourth straight complete game, going all 9.0 innings allowing four runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts. Hrncar was named the GLVC Pitcher of the Week last week. Offensively, Shields went 3-for-3 with two stolen bases and drew a pair of walks. Aliverti went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI out of the three-hole. In game two, Parkside sent freshman Kate Czoschke to the mound after a scoreless top of the first, but Ashland grabbed an early lead with two runs off the freshman. Parkside responded with a big three-run top of the fifth inning. With one out in the inning, Jessica Miklos delivered the Rangers' first home run of the season and the first of her career, making it 2-1 Ashland. Later in the inning, Fenza ripped an RBI double that scored Shields and later came in the score on an error by the right fielder. In the bottom of the seventh, Ashland saw both runners come in to score off three Ranger errors in the inning. Fenza went 2-for-3 with an RBI while Miklos went l-for-3 with the home run. Shields had another hit and stolen base at the leadoff spot. Eight members of each weight class advance to Saturday and the teams will wrestle down to four from each that earn a place at the NCAA Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in two weeks. Trevor Legg gave the Rangers a sixth place finish in the 3000 meter run while Jacob Petri took seventh in the mile run. The team of Jada Williams, Kaila McLaurin, Aurora Mala and Monica Geiser blew away the competition in the 4x400 with a time of 4:05.62 to all earn First Team All-GLVC honors. McLaurin took fourth in the 400 while Jada Williams finished in sixth in the 400 and fifth in the 200. In the 800-meter run. Mala finished in eighth and Geiser was right behind in ninth. While Parkside wasn't scored due to conference sanctions, the men would have finished in fifth place while the women would have taken seventh place.
