Professor discovers a nci ent species of croco dile AU ST IN KR IEG ER krie g0 04 @ ran ge rs, uw p. ed u A new specie s of ancient crocodilia n was recently categorized and named, Deltasu chus mothera li, by the Arling ton Archosaur Site Team (AA S) located in A rling ton, Texas. This re search was stalled in 2008 by Dr. Derek M ain w orkin g from the Unive rsity o f Texa s Arlingto n. Dr. Chris Not o, a paleontologist from UW-Parkside , took over the site after Main's passing in 2013, where he ha s bee n continuin g work on the site since. Archosaurs refer to a group of dinosaurs' who would be relatives to modern day crocodilian s and many bird species, dating back between 95-100 m illio n years ago, included in these dinosaurs would be Tyrannosaurus Rex and Triceratops. This discovery and class ifying of this croc is significan t becau se o f the specific time in the fossil record it gives a look in to. Th e d isc ov ery Deltasuchus motherali is approximated to have been 20 feet in length, and b ased upon fossilized bones of its former prey, the croc consumed almost anything it wanted to with in its habitat. This, Dr. Not o explained, "was an aquatic ambush predator like most crocs today... but instead of wildebeests it was grabbing duckbill ed dinosaurs...and was definitely the top predator in its ecosystem." This specimen is important be­ cause it is a new and unique spe cies of Archosaur, but it also acts a s better insight into the Midd le Cretaceo us period , a time on Earth where litt le is know n about how animals evolved and lived. Dr . No to explains that the classifyi ng of this specific speci es of croc is significant beca use "it 's not related to any crocodiles or alligators today, it's part of an extinct lineage, desp ite superficially resembling modern crocodilia n." N o t l ik e any ot he r " c ro c " As Dr. Noto explained, this species of croc does not have any living relatives today, desp ite its strik ing resemblanc e; therefore, Noto refers to the spe cies as a "croc cousin" . The methods, re­ searching, and cataloguing o f every little and big piece of bone is critic al to placing the animal into a known lineage. When deciding where to place a spe cies, paleontologists compare f eatur es of fossils from other simil ar speci es using computer software to locate the best lin eage th e feature s of those fossils fit in. Usi ng this technology and the many hours o f hard work from studen ts and faculty sort ing through the fossils, No to and the AA S team was able to distinguish Deltasuchus motherali as a new and unique specie s. St ud en t in vo lve m en t Over the years many stu dent s h ave been involved in the sorting, cleaning, an d catalo guing the different sp ecime ns re covered . Currently, Dr. Noto is w orking wi th stude nts who are scre en washing sed iment r ecove red on the site to obtain the sm allest o f spec imens in the site. Through a serie s of sie ves, stude nts sort through sedime nt to find larger pieces to be dried in an oven an d ex­ amined through microscope after. The work fro m studen ts has re cove red a mass of specime ns from the dried sediment which gi ves a very clear look into how the eco syste m functioned a s a whole? Dr. Not o expr esse s his excitement for the fu- Stu den ts as sist ing i n t he exc ava tion pro ces s. ture of the site in saying, "this is a period of time [where ] we don' t really have much of a fossil re­ cord, whi ch gives the potential f or things we find to be brand new." In a ddition to students workin g on UW-Parkside's campus, many st udents have also cle aned spe cimens at the Kenosha Dinosaur Discove ry Museum throu gh a partnership wit h Carthage College. Furthermore, since 2011, two student s have actually been able to travel to Ar­ lingto n and take part actual excavation. Dr. Noto asse rts the importance of student involvement with this project goin g on to say , "ever y part of the work , no matter how seemingly mundane, you have to do the cleaning and do the sorting, hundreds of hours of wo rk, but every b it o f it is absolutely cri tica l." UW-Parkside began the se meste r wit h a New Student Convocatio n, Tue sday, Sept. 5, in the Sports & Ac tivi ty center welco ming the largest incomi ng class in the past five years. The U W-Parkside c lass of 2021 totals 4769 studen ts the large st enroll­ ment since 2011 when enrollment was 4887. This year's enro llment is also up from 20 16's total o f43 99 student s enrolled. The growth o f the university is an important milestone as it reflects UW-Parksid e's abilit y to rema in a viable optio n for students. Especially non-tradi tional students, which many UW-Parkside students ar e. UW-Parkside is one of the cheap est four-year public institutions i n the state of Wiscon sin and is in a co nve­ nient locatio n between Milwa ukee and Chicago. This is also a large draw for students who a re from those larger are as but are searching for a school in a smaller a rea that is still able to offer good educational opportunities. UW-Parkside also ha s a student to faculty ration o f 19:1, which is fairly normal considering that, according to the Nation al Center for Education Sta­ tistics, the national a verage for college student-to-faculty ratios is 18:1. The unive rsity o ffers 33 undergraduate majors and three master's degre es in 22 academic departments. Dr. Br yan Le wis, assistant dea n for health-re lated professions, led an energetic and thought-pr ovoki ng discussion at the new student convoca tion. His speech challenged the incom ing students to deeply contemplate wh y they are pursuin g their chosen major, and also encour­ aged them to contin ually strive to find me aning, purpose, and self- fulf illm ent throughou t their academic careers. UW-Parks ide Chancello r Debbie Ford, remind ed new students that someday they themselves would be wa lkin g across th e commencement stage. "Be gin with the goal in m ind ," Ford said. Because the 2017 inco m­ ing class is so large, Ford anticipates yet another record brea king graduat­ ing class in 2021 . Re co rd cla ss size Enrol lmen t is not the on ly area in whic h UW-par kside has see n recent grow th and succe ss. In May 2017, the univer sity celebrated its larg­ est commencement in histo ry. Last year, 529 studen ts were eligi ble to participate in the spring commence­ ment ceremonies, whi ch were held on May 13. This number was larger than the previous year's rec ord class by 8 percent.
