Mission Statement
The Ranger News strives to
inform, educate, and engage
the UW-Parkside community
by publishing well-written,
accurate student journalism on
a weekly basis.
The Ranger News has meetings every Friday at
noon. All students and faculty of UW-Parkside
are welcome. Please feel free to attend. Have any
comments, concerns, questions, or story ideas?
Please e-mail us at: rangernews@uwp.edu .
We are located at Wyllie D139C
Each person may take one newspaper
per issue date. Extra newspapers can be
purchased for $1 apiece. Newspapers can
be taken on a first come, first serve basis,
meaning that once they are gone, they are
gone. We work on the honor system, but
violators will be prosecuted for theft. Faculty
members and students organizations who
wish to use The Ranger News in classrooms
should consult the editor-in-chief to reserve
however many free copies they wish to use.
ASSOC I ATI-O
Well, once again, the
newspapers weren't here
until Wednesday. Once again,
Hometown Publishing's
equipment broke down. Quite
often, I hear about newspapers
going under. I can't help but
wonder if equipment that is
in poor repair is part of that
problem. In fall I will miss having
that fresh hard copy every week.
It'll be really nice to not have
to worry about broken down
equipment, though, in addition to
all the other opportunities online
publishing will be bringing us.
Registering for classes
begins soon, so I'll take the
rest of this paragraph to remind
everyone that we offer internships
here at The Ranger News. We do
not publish during summer, so
there are no summer internships.
However, come fall (or spring,
but we'd love to have you all
year!) we'd be more than happy
to have you as part of our staff.
We offer internships for reporters,
photographers, and designers.
There is some rather simple
paperwork to be done, and that's
it! We do ask for samples of your
work much like other jobs might,
but we don't make you sit through
interviews or try and have you be
someone you're not. Everyone
has ai different perspective on
life and something different to
bring to The Ranger News, so
we try to accept as many interns
as we can. Stop by our office in
the Student Center or email us

about our campus, stop on by
for an application. If your skills
are stronger in the photography
field, same thing! There is
never such a thing as too many
photographers—sometimes they
pick up the work when we're
short on reporters. A picture is
worth a thousand words, right?
The more we can photograph and
write about, the more the student

what's going on at Parkside.
If you ever catch an error

we'd love to hear about it and

Again, email us at rangernews@

that's why we include their

Zeta Sigma Chi, a
multicultural sorority here at
UW-Parkside, held auditions
March 26, 27, and 28 in the
Spruce Room for an upcoming
event they are hosting.
The event they are presenting
is called Take It 2 The Stage,
which is a talent showcase.
The sorority started this
Take it to the v/pnt .1 event because they recognized
that children need a positive role
model, and someone to look up to
and inspire to be. They encouraged
organizations and groups on
campus to come out and audition.
The sorority felt that
"their presence in the showcase
would be an opportunity
for younger school students to
see what success could look like
when a person is determined."
The auditions were
.^EglLJO—UWiParkside students
and community grade school
and high school students. The
event is an opportunity for "talented
individuals and groups
to display the phenomena as
to what makes them so great."
Everyone that attended
the auditions will be featured in
the showcase. The group CHAOS
will also be performing at
the intermission of the event.
The cost of auditioning
was $10, and Zeta Sigma Chi
chapter president Re.sha p;w
said that there was a great turnout.
She also said that there was amazing
talent. There will be a cash
grand prize for the individual or
group that out shines the rest of
the talent and takes the spot light.
Talent that will be featured
includes: gospel, dance, a
rap group, poetry, and multiple
singers. Riser said that during
the auditions they were looking
for a lot of diversity and
welcomed different talents.
-This, is the first year
that the talent show is being
held at UW-Parkside. Riser said
that hopefully the event would
keep continuing year after year.
She said that its continuance
will be based on attendance
and popularity of the event.
The showcase will
be held on Thursday, Apri
19 at 7p.m. in Main Place
on campus. It is open to
both students and the public.

Recover SAMANTHA SCHMALING
scma005@rangers.uwp.edu
On Monday, March 30,
the Soup and Series presented
"Bubble. Recession.
Recovery," which
featured guest speaker
Marcelo Milan, an Assistant
Professor in the
Economics Department.
He presented a slideshow
called "The US Economy:
Bubble, Crisis, and Recovery."
The presentation included
information about
the stimulus package, the
housing problem, "unemployment
rates, and declining
income and spending.
The United States is currently
in the worst financial
crisis since the Great Depression.
The country also
had the worst fourth quarter
in 2008 since the 1930's and
the second worst bear market
from 1929-2009. Home
appreciation rates also
displayed negative numbers
in the fourth quarter.
Milan defined the bubble
as being "a rapid and artificial
increase in the price
of assets (above reasonable
levels)." Milan gave
examples of bubbles being
the dot com bubble
and the housing bubble.
Milan explained that bubbles
exist because people
buy things at increased prices
and then hope that others
will buy them for a greater
amount. The aftermath of
the bubble's bursts include
depressed asset prices, prolonged
periods of joblessness,
economic stagnation,
increased government debt,
and an impaired banking
and financial system.
A major consequence of
the current economy has
been job loss. The unemployment
rate has climbed
from 7.2% to 7.6% in the
past month. More than 4
million jobs have been lost
since the economic crisis,
there have been massive
number of layoffs, and jobless
claims have soared.
Even in the current crisis,
hourly wage has increased,
and there have also
been productivity gains.
Other consequences of
the current economy have
been major increases in
loan losses for banks, rapid
decline of business loans
shrinking (in commercial
banks), consumer confidence
has plummeted,
people aren't spending as
much, and they are saving
more, there are depressing
vehicle sales, and investments
are also collapsing.
How does the current
economy affect us as
students? In Milan's terms,
"education pays." The
correlation between the
amount of schooling a person
has and the job market
is positive. The more education
a student has under
her belt, and the more degrees
she hold shows, the
more she will earn more,
have more employment
opportunities, ana be less
likely to be unemployed.
Milan assured everyone
at the end of the presentation
that, as the history
record shows, there is
good news ahead. Recessions
and depressions end
at some point. How long
they last depends on how
the economy will respond
to the fiscal stimulus and
the FED's monetary policy.

Let's keep it real
JOHNATHAN JACOB
j acobOl 5@uwp.edu
I can appreciate living in a
country where the government
has laws and regulations that are
designed to keep people safe from
harming themselves or others.
However, what I cannot accept
is how this same establishment
is willing to compromise its
integrity if there is the potential
for significant financial gain.
The focus of this assessment
is tobacco; a legal consumer
good that not only has no health
benefits, but can be very harmful.
Now, if it's government's
objective to keep us safe,
someone has some explaining to
do. Nicotine is certainly a drug,
and tobacco has more chemicals
than a science lab. Please forgive
my sarcasm. The last time I
checked, people in America were
dying at an alarming rate every
year as a result of complications
from lung and other cancers that
are a product of cigarette smoke.
Many of these individuals never
smoked; they are victims of
second-hand smoke. My mother
died from the effects of lung
cancer. Of course, she made the
conscious decision to smoke
for many years. She knew the
dangers of what she was putting
into her body. To her credit, she
never felt sorry for herself, even
as the cancer was taking her life.
I must emphasize
that this is not an anti-smoking
campaign. It is an indictment of
politicians for trying to convince
us that they have our best interests
Is the shoe deadlier than the bomb?
RYANASHTON
ashton001@uwp.edu
Last month Iraqi
journalist Muntadhar al-Zeidi,
well-known for throwing his
shoes at former President George
W. Bush last December during a
press conference, was sentenced
to three years in prison for his
"crime." Mr. Zeidi was charged
with aggression against a visiting
head of state, and there was
reportedly heavy protest from
the Iraqi public after the verdict
was read. According to a New
York Times article, there were
supporters chanting "hero" outside
the Iraqi court house, and a statue
of a large shoe was erected north
of Baghdad to honor Mr. Zaidi;
however the Iraqi Parliament
ordered the statue dismantled.
I think this case of
presidential "shoeing" is a great
example of how upside-down
some conceptions of "justice" can
be; and, given that our President
was both the impetus and the
target of those volatile projectiles,
it tells us something about
our country's values as well.
On the one hand, you
have the President of a nation that
had waged, and had continued to
wage, an immensely violent war
of aggression on another country's
land appearing, in person, within
that country's borders (albeit in a
"green zone" heavily guarded by
the president's own soldiers) to
speak as if all the resultant death
and destruction was ultimately
"good" for those living in the war
zone. This is a man whose moral
code permitted him to authorize
the use of military force (including
a massive bombing campaign
meant to elicit psychological
"shock" and "awe") against a
sovereign population of people
without that population's
consent (nor much of the world's
consent for that matter). This
man, the one who has untold
thousands of bodies lying in
his wake, is considered, to the
present day, to have been acting
justly throughout his military
campaign and thus has remained
free of formal punishment.
Yet, on the other hand,
you have a man who has lived
the reality of a war-tom nation
first-hand; who has no army or
bodyguards to do his bidding;
who has felt the weight of a
foreign President's policies on
he and his family's psyches;
who has utilized his shoes as his
means of "shock" and "awe"— it
is this man that the Iraqi justice
system (which, one might say,
is strongly influenced by the
U.S.'s "restructuring" efforts)
deemed fit for punishment. It is
the man whose actions resulted
in no death or injury; the man
whose actions were motivated
by compassion for those harmed
by the brutal violence; the man
whose actions earned the sanction
of the citizens of Iraq, who spoke
on their behalf—it is this man
who is deemed morally inferior,
and thus sentenced to prison
by the prevailing moral code.
The man who used
bombs and guns to negotiate
his terms is, in the eyes of this
perverse moral system, the
moral superior and thus remains
free of prison (and worthy of a
President's "retirement" package
nonetheless). This is the morality
of not only the Iraqi "justice"
system, but, it is sad to say, also
the morality of the government
who had recognized George W.
Bush as their President—the
government who sanctioned
his policies. Under this kind
of moral system, bombs and
guns are benign, whereas
rubber and leather are lethal.
But, perhaps, it is not a
matter of what one actually does
that defines the moral correctness
of their actions, but rather who one
is while doing it—a sort of moral
elitism. Since Mr. Zeidi was a
civilian, a reporter, a "nobody,"
his actions, no matter what they
happened to be, were simply
predisposed to moral wrongness,
and thus were easy to punish. Mr.
Bush, however, as a President,
as a Commander in Chief, as an
elite; well, he's simply immune
from moral wrongness due to his
elevated social status. So long as
morality is defined by status, then
those of elite social status will
always be morally superior to
those of negligible social status.
This is supposedly "justice." This
is also why it is utter bullshit.
Proud to be a Ranger
TERRY TYNAN
tynan001@uwp.edu
I've lived in Keposha, off and on,
since 1991. Gradually it became
more "on" than "off' and for
the last several years it is totally
"on." My wife gets upset when
I refer to her beloved hometown
as Chicago's finest North Shore
suburb. Believe me, I mean no
disrespect. After all, the North
Shore is a beautiful place with
stately mansions housing some
of America's wealthiest and most
influential citizens. Regardless,
I am very content living in the
"City For All Seasons." For
anyone who is retired, but
doesn't really want to be, this is
the place to live.. The enviable
advantage of conveniently lying
between two major cultural
centers is a given. Concerts,
church festivals, sports events,
museums; and lake activities are
here in abundance. I happen to
love the trolley rides for a quarter.
Friendly people and great Italian
food are equally appreciated.
Four months ago .1 made a
startling, life changing discovery
just a five minute ride from
our cottage. I have always
been aware of the existence of
the University of Wisconsin-
Parkside. For instance, I knew
that the Northwestern University
football team held summer camp
there and that the foreign film
program was an entertainment
bargain. What I just learned,
though, was that a state resident
over 60 years old could audit up to
two courses per semester- tuition
free. No credits, but, at my age,
who cares. I got 120 of those
over 50 years ago in Madison.
Now, it is solely for the fun of
learning. Computer Science 105
and World History 126, taught
by Tim Knautz and Nat Godley,
respectively, are awesome. (See,
1 am even picking up the lingo)
"Thanks, gentlemen for letting
me feel like part of the class and
for not making me take exams
or turn in assignments." Talk
about your "having it both ways."
Besides attending classes
twice a week, I am enjoying an
endless parade of activities and
entertainment, such as: great
music and theater, exciting
athletic events, discussion
groups, lectures and exhibits,
all provided in a state-of theart
environment. I am, now a
member of PASA (Parkside Adult
Student Alliance). I am the most
'adult' person there by decades.
I overheard my wife telling one
of her friends that I had joined
a fraternity. I did, ultimately,
in mind. On the contrary, this is
more an issue of economics. To
put it bluntly, the government
makes a ridiculous amount of
money from the tobacco industry.
Prices tend to fluctuate for a lot of
consumer goods, even gasoline.
However, any time the cost of
cigarettes changes significantly,
it is because the price is going
up. If the government didn't
make so much money tobacco
would be illegal. Consequently,
we would hear politicians
talking about keeping us safe
and improving our overall
health by reducing the number
of tobacco-related cancers
However, you will
hear none of this any time soon
because tobacco will remain legal
Have you ever wondered why
politicians won't even address
this issue? Personally, It doesn't
matter to me if it's legal or not.
The tobacco farmers admit that
the product they grow is a source
of profit. Why can't others do the
same? Again, let's keep it real.
Dear Man
ANDREA GLEASON
andrearoseg@ hot mail .com
Dear Man,
No offense intended
kind sir, but I do not desire to be
you. On the contrary, I am proud
to be quite different. This current
movement of modeling your
clothing and your mannerisms
has been pushed upon me by society
for far too long. 'Tis a pity
that your foul mouth has infested
mine, and that it has become acceptable
for me to utter such filth
in the presence of others. We have
strayed from our feminine ways
of modesty, reserved nature, and
politeness, exchanging these for
provocative attire, brashness, and
ill manners. Often such motives
are to appeal to your unbridled
masculine desires, and in doing
so I am losing my identity
as a unique and respectable sex.
I have been fooled-into believing
your wants should be mine as
well. I have rejected such beautiful
and intricate attire for fear of
appearing weak or unattractive
beside you. My fight for equality
has become a fight for the right to
imitate and please. In my struggle
for equal dignity, confusion has
occurred, making it a struggle for
your ambitions and manly qualities,
or often to appease them, and
even you have forgotten who I am.
I have received what the so-called
"feminists" of my sex have asked
for: I open my own door, walk in
behind you, pull up my own chair,
and pay for my own meal. In our
blindness for more power rather
than equality, my innate qualities
have been underappreciated.
Delicacy does not imply a lack of
strength, and displaying my emotions
does not mean I lack the ability
to be logical. In envying your
qualities, I have forgotten to value
my own such as my nurturing nature,
sensitivity, and compassion.
In lowering my standards, I have
equally lowered yours. For this
I apologize and promise to work
to regain the respect and dignity
those in the past have worked
so hard for. I only ask that you
help me in this fight by supporting
my right to be equal in dignity
and rights with a role distinct
from your own. I now realize that
just because I now have the right
to act like you, does not mean I
should. I desire, not to be treated
like your fellowmen, but rather
as your compliment and counterpart,
whose qualities although
quite different, are just as valued.
Sincerely, Woman
correct her. When I told her I
was considering spending spring
break in Key West with my
fellow students she said I should
stay there. I have a Ranger ID
card with my picture on it, a
parking permit and a student
e-mail address. Someone even
suggested I run for a Student
Government office, which would
be a bit of a stretch. Yesterday,
I bought a Parkside cap for 15
bucks from the bookstore. This
bustling enterprise has collected
quite a little of my discretionary
funds because, while the courses
are free, the text books and
supplies, emphatically, are not.
I meet several new people every
day, many from distant lands
with diverse cultures. I was even
invited to join the "International
Club—I guess being a native
Chicagoan qualifies me. Did I
happen to mention that Parkside
is absolutely the friendliest place
I have ever been in my life?
People actually smile at me in
passing. Everyone is helpful
and friendly, whether they be
faculty, administration, service,
or, best of all, students. Ah! the
students. Like many of my peers
I was becoming deeply concerned
about our country's future being
placed in the hands of pampered,
selfish, thoughtless, rude and,
yes, poorly educated young
people. Now, after observing and
conversing with UW-P students
on a daily basis, I have to say,'
without reservation, I am not
only confident about our future...
I am truly excited about it.
Just one regret, tho'ugh-
-I could have started all
this fifteen years ago.

Track team shines in good and bad weather
ROB HANSEN
hanse082@uwp.edu
The University of
Wisconsin-Parkside track team
split between two venues this last
weekend. Several members competed
at the Raleigh Relays hosted
by North Carolina State University,
and the remainder of the
squad competed at Wisconsin Lutheran
College in Milwaukee, WI.
The distance athletes
competed in a 60-degree rainstorm
on Friday night. Ben Orvold
ran a lifetime best 31:27
10,000m. This time was good
enough for 16"' place and 11th
among collegiate athletes. Rehan
Mahmood followed not too
far behind Orvold, also running a
lifetime best 32:16. He was the
2lst place finisher, and 16lh among
all collegiate athletes. Mahmood
ran a very even-tempo race; both
5,000m splits were 16:08. In
\
the women's 10,000m, sophomore
Heidi Ertl competed for the
first time ever at this distance.
She ran a time of 38:07, which
notched her 14"' overall and 12"'
against collegiate competitors.
Senior Jessica Monson ran her
first-ever outdoor 5,000m event.
Monson finished 6lh overall and
3rd among collegiate competition.
Her 16:40 finishing time is
not only a new school record, but
also a 20-second personal best
and an NCAA DII Outdoor Nationals
automatic qualifying time.
On Saturday morning, at
NC State, up and coming freshmen
star Hope Christie finished
2nd out of 82 competitors in the
unseeded section of the 1500M.
Her time of 4:39 missed NCAA
DII provisional qualifying by
just over one second. Her 4:39
1500m time converts to a 4:59 1
Mile time, which is a 16 second In Photos
lifetime best. Brittany Glassburn
also turned in a big lifetime best
mark of 4:56, 11. seconds faster
than her best time outdoor last
year. Miranda Melville competed
in the 5,000m race-walk
competition, where she blew
away her competition. She competed
in a male/female mixed
field and came victorious by over
2.5 minutes. Her time of 25:07
is a 35+ second personal best.
In the men's 1500m,
Dustin Baldwin and LaQuan
Fenderson competed in lifetime
best form. Baldwin's time of
4:04.5 just misses his lifetime
best of 4:04.3 and Fenderson
competed in the 1500m for the
second time in his young career.
He ran eight seconds faster
than the week previous, bringing
home a 4:11 finishing time.
The Ranger runners
finished the day with a pair of
4x800m relay events. The women
finished 16lh out of 22 teams with
a time of 9:36.2. This time ranks
top ten all-time at UW-Parkside.
Monson had the fastest split of
2:15. On the men's side, the
Ranger half-milers turned in a
relay time of 8:08, slightly off of
the team goal time. Rob Hansen
carried the fastest split of the relay
notching a season best 1:57.0.
At Wisconsin Lutheran,
the Rangers' split squad battled
tough through the elements.
They faced temperatures of 33
degrees and dropping throughout
the meet. They were threatened
with snow showers, which held
off throughout most of the event,
yet still endured constant winds
of 25 miles per hour and gusts as
high as 45 miles per hour. Sophomores
Bryan McLoone and Bert
Meyers ran season best times of
4:21 and 4:22 in the 1500m. Jennie
tpndt and Whitney Olson
turned in ,a pair of top* performances,
crossing the finish line
in 5:12 and 5:15, respectively, in
the 1500m. In the 5,000m run,
the Rangers each finished near
the front of their races, but their
times were noticeably affected by
the elements. Jacob Buddell and
Matt Vidas notched a pair of top
five finishes. Buddell finished the
5,000m race in 16:45 and Vidas
in 17:15. Angie Adams was the
top Parkside women's performer,
turning in a time of 19:45.
Alex Mena dominated the 800m
run scoring a 6 second victory
This weekend the Rangers
will travel to Elmhurst College,
which is located just past
O'Hare International Airport
in Chicago, 111. The following
week several Rangers will
be flying out to Bucknell University
near Pittsburg, Penn.
