JOKIRST jo@therangernews.com Due to the unsuccessful search for a new Chancellor at the University of Wisconsin- Parks ide, an Interim Chancellor was picked by the University of Wisconsin System to temporarily fill Chancellor Keating's place. The UW System asked Dr. Lane Earns to step up and temporarily lead UW-Parkside, until a permanent Chancellor is found. The Ranger News got a chance to sit down with Chancellor Earns and ask him a few questions so that the campus as a whole can get to know him better. Dr. Lane Earns was born and raised in Michigan, and went to Michigan State University to obtain his undergraduate degree in high school education, focusing on history. Right before he graduated, he spent two months in Japan as part of a study abroad program, which eventually changed the direction of his studies. He returned from Japan one year tater. Earns was one of seven American picked to return to Japan, where they went to different parts of Japan to help teach English in Japanese schools. Earns went to Nagasaki for one year as part of this program. Today, that program is called the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme (JET program). and has around 6,000 members. Chancellor Earns then went to the University of Hawaii for his Masters degree in Asian Studies, and then went back to Japan to teach English at a women's college, He returned to the University of Hawaii to work towards his PhD in Japanese History. He won a Japan Foundation Dissertation Grant, which allowed him to conduct his dissertation research at the University of Tokyo for one year. He spent two more years in Nagasaki while finishing his degree. In 1987, he went to the University of Wisconsin- Oshkosh, and was a professor of world history and Asian American history. Eventually, he became the chair of the history department. In 2002, he became the Associate Vice Chancellor, and in 2004, he served as the Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor. In 2005, he served as the Provost and Vice Chancellor, and stated in that position until coming to Parkside in Aug. 2008. In 2008, he was asked by the University of Wisconsin System to fiJI the position of Interim Chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. and accepted the position. Earns remarked that the position "seemed like an important job, and something that my particular abilities would he able to help". Dr. Earns was familiar with the UW System, having been part of Oshkosh's campus for years, and he knew several people from Parkside who helped fill him in with information. To him, it seemed like an excellent chance for leadership, and an "opportunity not only to help the system but to be part of a very strong campus", Earns thinks that Parkside is a beautiful campus, and he couldn't have been welcomed any better. A lot of work was put into the Chancellor's house near campus to make it livable- -the house needed some general maintenance. in order to be brought back to top form. He has had "nothing but good things to say" about his experience thus far. Parkside is a smaller campus than he's used to, bUI he finds that a smaller campus allows him to get to know more people and get to know those people a Littleeasier. Earns finds the new Continued 10 )(/~t 3 The Ameth~ t Initiative and responsible drinking Drunk Driving's (and other such groups') outcry about this issue. and the poor media coverage of this discussion as a result. the Amethyst Initiative just wants to engage those outraged groups into talking about the real problem--the poor education that minors receive about responsible drinking. Amethyst Initiative? First, it meant that he believed that "we -need to a serious, sustained, unfettered debate about how closely public policy- -specifically the drinking age-- and the reality of tife in campus community are aligned" .As such, Keating signed on to participate in a nation-wide discussion of this issue. and to explain the place of alcohol in our own campus community. Why name it the "Amethyst Initiative"? "Amethyst" is derived from two Ancient Greek words: "not" (a-), and "intoxicated" (methustos). Thus, "Amethyst Initiative", or the "Not-Intoxicated Initiative". tn Greek. mythology, Amethyst was a young girl who "incurred the wrath of the God Dionysus after he became intoxicated with red wine," Amethyst cried oUI to Goddess Diana for help, who turned Amethyst into a white stone. When Dionysus realized what had happened, he cried. His tears fell into his goblet of wine, which promptly spilled over and onto the white rock, turning it purple. According to the "about" section' of amethystiuitative.org: " The purple gemstone, amethyst, was widely believed to be an antidote to the negative effects of intoxication. [... J The amethyst is thus a meaningful symbol for this initiative, which aims to encourage moderation and responsibility as an alternative £0 the drunkenness and reckless decisions about alcohol that mark the experience of many young Americans." Illustrious painting material! Might I add to the list turkeys, elephants, and babies being born straight at you? If this sounds like it's up your alley, hop on over to our very own art gallery, which happens to be featuring a dual show by Benjamin Swallow Duke and Teresa Dunn! Both artists have used oil paint to depict social interactions, in scenes that range from ecstatic to shocking. Through the manipulation of their environments, Duke and Dunn convey interesting realities. Benjamin Swallow Duke, a Kentucky native, has a very gestural style of painting. In "Permanent City Catastrophe." viewers see a graphic and chaotic city street, abound with individuals tbat are puking, shooting at one another, juggling junk food, and toppling boxes threatening to fall. A sense of unbalance and angst pervades, while barf, blood, and birth relate a shocking human truth- violence and the dirtiness of simply being human is relevant everyday, on every street. In a seamless flow to the nex.t artist. Teresa Dunn enables you to see into each figure's thoughts, making you feel .like a visual eavesdropper. Object and intimate human interaction is relayed in rich. painterly manner. She plays with reality, packing her interior scenes with seemingly unrelated figures, such as a baked goose, a real goose, and a figure lying behind-up on a doctor's table. Objects seem to move due 10 the interplay of lights and darks, mingled with roiling texture. You can feel her working the brush marks in an incredibly physical way, leaving passionate marks that can really stand up on their own two feet. Instead of being smoothed over, they are read on several levels as being part of a process. While Duke hegs the question, "Is this the way the worJd is in this work?" Teresa Dunn "delves into a world where animals. food and other objects are important as human characters." These two masterfully appropriate ambiguous images and assemble them into something chaotic. Come take a gander and bring your own sense of reality. Even after centuries of our forefathers figbting slavery. it still exists in this free country. Over half a million people suffer from this sinister, underworld crime; half are children and the scariest fact of all may be that much of America doesn't even know its ex.istence. This crime is called human trafficking. Human trafficking is the illegal transportation of people into other countries of which, they are forced to become sex toys, prostitutes, domestic slaves, soldiers or unwilling organ donors. These victims are mostly women and children from poor, uneducated countries who are given these false ideas of prosperity, stardom, or a loving home. -And tragically, these naive innocents are thrown into a sludge pool of physical and mental abuse, deception and loss of self-image. How can so many people be trapped in the nightmarish whirlpool of human trafficking and hardly anybody brings up the subject in newspapers or television? It's quite simple: the victims have too much fear and not-enough communication skills to get help. As stated before, most of the women and children are from developing countries such as Latin America, Africa, and the former Soviet Union, India and Asia. They never learned English or know very little of it and so they become easy prey for the traffickers. Another reason is that in other countries, women and children aren't valued as highly as men and so they are expendable. And when they become enslaved, the traffickers "season" them by gang raping, beating and psychologically degrading them until their humanity breaks. II's a horrible way to live and .die. Fortunately, there are people who have been abJe to see the grotesque tumor on America's back; people like Guadalupe Vidales, Gina Allende, and Darius Alernzadeh, who have the passionate dream of spreading the word about human trafficking and finding ways to put an end to it. These three spoke at the human trafficking meeting on OCL 8 at the University of Wisconsin- Parkside. They revealed that there are many different types of human trafficking: child soldiers, sex trafficking, domestic service. organ trafficking, illegal adoption and forced marriage. Children soldiers, where innocent children are raised to shoot weapons and serve in the miJitary, are the least in demand. while sexual exploitation is at its highest._ Guadalupe Vidales. assistant professor for the study of criminal justice, explained that Thailand openly embraces prostitution as a sturdy pillar of their economy. Many parents sell their children to pimps; disillusioned by the pimps' positive speeches of how their children will become very successful and rich. Other times, parents just sell their kids for the sake of drugs or becoming debt free. She also said that the police force there is hardly protection because they're paid off by the pimps to allow their girls to cross borders that would be otherwise illegal to do. With a country like that, it's no wonder why these girls feel trapped, helpless, and alone. After the meeting was done, I was able to speak to one of Professor Vidales' students and volunteer to study human trafficking across the globe. Her name was Amanda, a senior at Parks ide, and she decided to study domestic violence-a branch off of criminal justice-and that eventually led her to the subject of human trafficking. Her desire grew exponentially and it became her dream to see this issue brought to light by the media and even in today's politics. "I think it's sad that not many people know that this is going on." The smell of fresh popcorn with six different seasoning salts for toppings drew many a sweet tootb to the event. Main Place of Wyllie Hall became a Wonka- like cornucopia of sugar: two different flavors of cotton candy, ice-cream floats, and a chocolate fountain with apples. pretzels, and cake to drown in it. All these treats filled the bellies of many students. A blueberry pie-eating contest took place earlier at the event and got a few laughs. We even had a model dressed up as Willy Wonka that was handing out toothbrushes to help prevent cavities. At Snakes Alive you could sign your team up for the dodge ball tournament, and you could make a guess of . how many Nerds were in a jar. Whoever guessed correctly won an iPod. Overall the kickoff was a success and made us look forward to Fall Fest events to come. The Snakes Alive part of the show was entertaining, (if you Iike reptiles crawl ing on you), and the food was great. The University of Wisconsin-Parkside kicked off the week of Fall Fest in Main Place from 11a.m till 1p.m on Oct. 6. This bumped the Rangers down to a 6-12 record overall and a 2-7 record in the conference, while raising Southern Indiana's record to 9-10 overall and 3-6 in the conference. A real factor in the game's outcome were two costly sets that actually fell negative for the Parkside Rangers. Addie Kramer of the Rangers still managed 13 kills, 4 aces, and 3 blocks on the game. Along with her contribution, Kristin Schmidt managed 8 kills, I ace, and 2 blocks in an attempt to resurrect the Rangers. This was all part of the Great Lakes Valley Conference women's volleyball match in the DeSimone Gymnasium at Parks ide. Although the Screaming Eagles pulled away with a victory on the first set of 25- 19, the Rangers came back with a vengeance in the second set clinching a 25- 19 victory. Unfortunately for the Rangers, Southern Indiana didn't hesitate to lock up the next two sets at 25-18 and 25-14. The third staple in the Parkside momentum. However, Meg Bushman of Southern Indiana countered much of the Rangers offense with 7 blocks along with 11 kills, making it for a tough game. "I didn't feel as comfortable this race as [ have in weeks past," said Heidi after her race. She shaved off twenty-three seconds from her time on this same course only three weeks ago. The story was similar for third place runner, Hope Christie, who ran twenty- nine seconds faster than she did three weeks ago. She crossed the line in 19:30, the 31st college athlete. Also competing for Parkside was Angie Adams who ran 19:57 and Heidi Andersen who finished in 20:37. The Ranger women finished 5th out of 31 teams and only ten points out of 2nd place. Nationally ranked D.II and NAIA teams dominated the team championship standings. Ferris State University scored a meet low 98 points followed by Indiana Tech with 159, Indiana Wesleyan with 185, Aquinas College with 194 and UW-Parkside with 195 points. On the men's side of the venue, lone senior, Rob Hansen was the only UW-Parkside competitor in the 5,000-m race. He finished in 32nd 'place. Because Parkside only fielded one athlete, they were incapable of scoring. In the 8,000-m race, the Ranger men finished 5th place out of 28 teams. Indiana Tech University scored 36 points to capture the victory followed closely by Aquinas College who scored 68 points. Fresno Pacific University, coming all the way from California, staffed a third place finish, scoring 122 points. They were closely followed by Indiana Wesleyan with 153 points and the UW-Parkside Ranger men with 185 points. This was Parks ide 's best finish at the Lucian Rosa Invite in four years. The individual race was dominated by Cameron Walter of Indiana Tech winning by 28 seconds. His finishing time was 25: 14. Parkside's top finisher The University of Wisconsin- Parkside men's and women's cross-country tearns hosted the Lucian Rosa Invite on Saturday October 11,2008 on the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course. This event featured four races; the women's 4,OOO-m and 5,000-m and the men's 5,000-m and 8,000,m. Early morning temperatures hung .in the mid-Sus and led most to believe it would be a crisp autumn cross country morning, but as the sun rose through the October sky, so did the temperature, which peaked out at 70 degrees with the sun beating down forcefully. The women's 4,OOO-m was controlled by Lindenwood University and UW-Parkside. The race was dominated by Francine Nzilampa of Lindenwood University, who finished in 14:36. The first UW-Parkside finisher was Whitney Olson who crossed the line in 15:49. Jessica Enderby was the next Parkside finisher at 15:57. Jennie Kindt, Amber Mc.clure and Kim Degener ran step for step, side by side from the middle of the pack toward the front passing nearly twenty runners each to finish l lth - L3th all at 16:04. It was very exciting to see the Ranger women's split squad run so successfully and finish so close together. The women's 5,000-m run was a little more star-studded. Senior Jessica Monson competed in her final home meet at UW- Parks ide. bringing home a sensational second place finish. Her final time was l7:42. The winner, Justyna Mudy from Shorter College, ran a 17:26 5K. She took control of the race from the gun and extended her lead as much as twent¥ seconds during the race. Heidi Ertl, a junior from Marshfield, WI, finished 15th among collegiate runners, . " w.as Rehan Mahmood, who ran a course personal-best time of 26:26. ·When The Ranger News spoke with Rehan after the race he explained that he was surprised by the team's fifth place finish: "Initially, when I looked at our times, I didn't think we had run very strong as a team, so when I saw the team scores, I was pleasantly surprised." When asked about his personal performance, he commented, "I was happy to overcome the less-than-perfect conditions. Hopefully my teammates and I can keep up our momentum." Other Ranger scorers were Ben Orvold in 27:00, freshmen Alex Mena and Sam Albrecht running 27: II and 27: 14 respectively, and Dustin Baldwin who crossed the line in 27:38. The Ranger News also caught a word with sophomore Bryan McLoone after the race. "I ran faster than three weeks ago, but it certainly wasn't my best effort," was McLoone's opinion on the event. Mcl.oone added that he was in desperate need of water midway through the race, on his second ascent up the "giant, green llill." The Rangers had a successful day on the cross-country course, as they gear up for the post season. The men have the week off, where as the women will travel to UW-Oshkosh for the Brooks Invitational at Lake Breezey Golf Course next Saturday afternoon.
