JO
KIRST

Back in January,
Chancellor
John (Jack)
Keating
announced
his plans to retire
this August.
As
a result,
two committees
were created:
the Search-and-
Screen
committee
and
the
Special
Regents
committee.
The
Search-and-Screen
committee
is largely
composed
of faculty,
butalso includes
academic
staff,
students
(either
picked
by the
school's
student
government
or
the President
of the University
of
Wisconsin

and community
members.

of this

and to select from that

and
the Special

for
further
consideration.
The process
of finding
a new Chancellor
can take anywhere
from 6 to 10
months
from start to finish.
Since
the process
is so lengthy,
the
Search-and-Screen
committee
broke it down into four phases.
During
the first phase,
the
committee
searches
all over the
country
for candidates,
They
begin by advertising
the position
and taking
applications.
As
the applications
come
in, the
committee
members
evaluate
them and any other documents
attached
to the application.
They check
with the applicant's
references,
calling
them.

them. or meeting
with them face

Once
the committee
narrows
the pooJ down
to 8

they conduct
interviews.
Those
who "pass"
the
interview
are added
to a "short
list" of suitable
applicants.
The
"short
list" contains
no fewer
than

order.
After
the "short

completed,
the second
phase

the different

of the diverse

body,
he
replied
by saying
that all groups
within
the University
need to be
supportive
of each other,
and to
facilitate
this, a central
inclusive
area would
be created.
Another
question
asked
dealt
with the
retention
rates
and how they
can be improved.
Feiner
thinks
developing
a mentoring
program
will help with this problem:
The
issue of public
