Campus technology survey ROBERT ROSATI robertrosati@hotmail.com A campus technology evaluation survey was sent out to students with the results of survey beingused towards UW-Parkside Improving the technology services offered Oncampus. The Campus Technology Services Prosram Review Committee cond~cted the survey. The identities of those replying the survey are anonymous. The first question asks the person filling out the survey to checkeach type of computer he Orshe uses for homework. or to cOrtununicate with instructors. I e m one of the computer abs on campus. The second ~uestion asks, "Have you ever ad a compatibility problem with YOUr ho me computer and any of UW-Parkside's computers?" You can click no or yes, and if you click yes it asks the user to describe the problem. The next few questions are about the service provided if you have had a technology problem on campus. The third question asks how often have you received help with a technology problem on campus. The choices . for a response are n~ve.r, once, twice, or more then two times. The following question seeks information about bow easy was it to get help with a technology problem. There are five different choices for a response: very easy, easy, not very easy. difficult, and very difficult. The fifth question wants to seek an answer pertaining to where the individual filling out the survey got help with their technological problem. There are seven choices for a response: the help desk, computer lah assistant, faculty member, resident advisor, web tutorial, a friend, and if none of the previous options are correct there is a space available to type in what the correct answer is. The sixth question lists the following technologies: personal laptop computer, campus laptop, a computer in a classroom, a smart board, a wireless network, audio visual equipment, and video editing equipment. The question wants to know where you were when using each of the aforementioned technologies if a problem occurred . The next couple of questions pertain to e-mail. They ask the person filling out the survey how often they use his or her- Parks ide e-mail account, to rate the service of UW-Parkside e-mail, and how UW-Parkside's e-mail service could be improved. The tenth question asks if the person filling out the survey if he or she has had a problem with a computer virus on campus. The next question wants to know how you save your computer files. The twelfth question wants to know if you have ever had some problem saving a file. The next two questions ''WeJve got issues" ask the following: have you ever been to a computer lab on campus on found zero computers available and how many times has a problem with a classroom computer equipment stalled a class. The fifteenth question asks the person filling out the survey to rate the technology in the campus computer labs. The next four questions want to know what you like the best and least about using technology services on campus, what one thing would you like change regarding the use of technology on campus, and what other concerns do you have about technology services on campus. The las. question asks what the class level is of the person filling out the-survey. There are a total of 20 questions on the survey. Interview with a Professor Featuring Dr. Dana Oswald MOLLIE EGAN tree_fingers99@yahoo.com Dr. Dana Oswald has been teaching at the University of Wisconsin - Parkside since 2005, but she began teaching when she was in graduate school while she was a teacher's assistant at Ohio State University. Before she came to UW-Parkside, for a year she taught at a smaIl university in Ohio called Whitenburg. Oswald teaches medieval literature, theory, gender classes and history of the English language. Oswald came to UW-Parkside because she had gotten an offer at UW-Parkside and at a school in Alaska, so she decided to stay around here and teach. She was also attracted to UW-Parkside because of the small. school size; none of her classes are overly huge. Oswald also likes that many of her studenrs at UW-Parkside are non-traditional students; those students aren't here because it's the next step that they should. do after high school, but they are at school because they want to be there. Oswald always knew she wanted to be a teacher because she comes from a family of teachers. She lovesnothing better thengetting up in front of a class that is really responding to what she is teaching and having a great class discussion. Oswald got her Bachelor's from the University of North Colorado. got her Master's and her Doctorate at Ohio State University. Her Ph.D. is in English with a specialty in medieval literature. One of Oswald's favorite classes she has ever gotten to teach is violence in medieval literature. In the literature that they were reading for that class the students actually kept a body count for how many times someone lost a limb from their body. Another favorite class that Oswald has taught is a senior seminar of medieval romance literature. Oswald's most recent favorite class that she has taught is literary analysis. Oswald is involved with Women's and Gender studies on campus. She is on their committee and helps makes discussions on what sorts of lectures they arc going to have and things like that. Oswald's advice tothestudents is to talk to your professors. She said that when things start to go wrong. is when a student doesn't go and talk to their professor. With the additional duties that I had to take on it made me have a new appreciation for everything Jo does on a weekly basis as the Editor-in-Chief. The Ranger News has had a lot going on this week. The Ranger News received a new computer that will be used for designing each issue from this week forward. The new computer provides a much-needed upgrade from our old computer in terms of both quality and screen size. This will make our graphic designer Ruth's job much easier since she will be the person using it the most. Additionally, Question of the Issue will be returning in this issue thanks to Ourlee Ourun, which is much appreciated by all of us. This evening of entertainment is held to benefitthe university's Italian cultural and exchange programs.
