Laramie Project Review RAMON A. JAIMEZ JaimeOOO@uwp.edu An exercise in intensity, the University of Wisconsin- Parkside's drama department's production of "The Laramie Project" is a show to remember. Directed by theatre department chair Dean Yohnk, "The Laramie Project" was written by Moises Kaufmann and the Tectonic Theater Project in response to the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard. The play is a study in the process of its. own creation with remarks from the developers as they look into the after-effects of Matthew's death on the community of Laramie, WY. The UW-Parkside production of "The Laramie Project" started on Nov. 29 and will run till Dec. 8. If the Nov. 29 opening show of "The Laramie Project" is any indication, then this production is one that should not be missed. The first' thing that should be mentioned is the' almost documentary style of this play. It is written from the perspective of the members of tbe Tectonic Theater Project and is given to the audience as a very matter of fact way. Unlike with fiction, or more stylized tel1ings of some stories, there was very little sense that what was being shown was not real. It was real; Matthew Shepard did die; his killers did confess; and Laramie, Wyoming, perhaps the world. has gone through much since then. All 14 actors are to be commended in bringing the over 70 characters in "The Laramie Project" to life. Of special note is Phil Zimmerman, whose handling of some of the more humorous roles often allowed for a break in the overall seriousness of the production. Terrance Barrett did a fantastic job of seamlessly switching through such diverse roles as Gov. Gerringer, a Unitarian .Minister, an inmate, and Aaron McKinney. Perhaps shining the .brightest that night was Derek Ewing, who did a phenomenal job with very intense roles, especially that of Dennis Shepard reading the victim impact statement in which he asked that McKinney not be killed for his crimes. However, things were not perfect on opening night. Despite the professionalism of the cast, there were a few lines that seemed to give them trouble, either in getting them out correctly or getting them out at all Barely noticeable, these flubs were not as pronounced as the two or three moments of missed que with the lighting, in which the lights did not shift to the appropriate actor, leaving the last speaker lit and the cnrrent one in the dark. Overcoming these minor mistakes, the story of a world growing in the aftermath .of a horrible incident is fully realized in Dean Yohnk's and UW-Parkside's production of "The Laramie Project." "Welcome Home Jr." selected for national recognition DAVIDWIDTE White041@uwp.edu Within the same month of graduation with a major in communications, minor in English and two certificates, UW- Parkside student Tiffany Donald is completing her first theatrical play in Augie Wegner Studio Theatre. "Welcome Home Jr." will be performed on Dec. 14 at 7: 30pm and Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. Admission is free. The play consists of six characters, and it has fi ve scenes. Written by, directed by, and starring Donald, Welcome Home Jr. is a comedic drama about family, faith, and life transitions. Donald said the story revolves around a black family and was written with slang dialog, but any family can relate to the story. "In every family, someone cries, has deaths, and has a crazy aunt," she said. She said the play teaches to forgive and forget and shows what may go on behind closed doors in familieS. "Even the people chosen by God have problems." she said. She said the play was inspired by her own mother, who is closely depicted through the mother character in the play. Donald said she began writing ineighth grade while being home schooled for a full school year due to medical conditions. She said she wrote poetry, movie trailers, commercials, short stories and movies to help pass time. Associate professor of the Theater Arts department, Dean Yohnk submitted the plot to the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. The KCACTF is a national theatre program which recognizes student's art. Donald said "Welcome Home Jr." was selected out of 95 films to be submitted for national recognition. The play will next be performed in Milwaukee in January, then possibly in Washington D.C. New volunteer organization started at UW-Parkside Lee Latona LatonOOl@uwp.edu The newest volunteer organization on campus, Wisconsin Honorary of Involved Leaders (WHIL), run by Keighley A. White, a student of UW- Parkside. White founded the first chapter of WHIL, on campus, during the faU 2007 semester. Already, even before the close of the semester, the budding organization has done much. White said the organization of WHa advacates to make anyone working at Parkside - from maintenance workers, to professors, to resident advisors (RA) - feel appreciated for what they do. "We also like to honor those around us who make living on campus' more tolerable and even slightly enjoyable." said White. Each week, three people are designated to be recognized and receive small gifts from WHlL. Their kindness extends off campus as well. Afew days before Thanksgiving, WHIL paid a visit to Holiday House, a food pantry sponsored by the Shalom Center. There the WHIL helped package food for less fortunate families. "It was hard work but really rewarding," White elaborated. If any students are interested in assisting these families as well, WH1L is planning a visit again sometime in December; all are welcome to come and join in. Posters announcing the date and time will be available around campus. WHIL is also planning another December activity. caroling for the elderly, WH1L sings on Saturday, Dec. 8. The organization also decided to "lift . the gloom of winter" by "adopting a family" for the holidays. WHIL welcomes new members, or even interested persons to contact White, or attend a meeting. However, I would never run fake numbers in the newspaper and it offends me that anyone would accuse me of that. Those who know me know that 1 have integrity. The survey was anonymous and those who chose to complete the survey did so. Not all of the respondents reported being sexually active either; a few reported being virgins but many of these individuals did not give detailed responses, so it was difficult to quote them for last week's article. So, we are not perfect, but we are improving. There is also a group of students in an Introduction to Marketing class wbo will be conducting a survey of The Ranger News readers. This survey will assess the likes and dislikes of our readers and help us continue to improve. There have been so many positive things and so many negative things that I hoped they would balance each other out, but it -seerns that negative things. even if there are fewer of them, definitely weigh more. So let me cut to the quick and write what I need to write. I guess the bad news should come first. The bad news is that Tbe Ranger News has failed to cover some issues on campus. There • is really no good excuse for this. The events we have missed are the Veteran's Day Celebration and covering the 'Parkside Student Government Association. You can read more about it on the Opinion Page, but allow me to say this, when one of my newer reporters, a freshman, asked me what thestudent government was, I knew we were not doing our job. Although the relationship between student government and The Ranger News has 'been strained in the past, tbat is no excuse for us not to write about them. I am sad to report that The Ranger News has only written one article about PSGA this semester, and that definitely needs to change. The positive. however, is this. More people than ever picked up our last issue of The Ranger News. This might be hard to believe, given what I have just written above, but it proves that people are still reading, for whatever reason. Perhaps more people picked up the paper because we chose to do something unconventional and a little controversial: conduct our own sex survey of students (we did receive one faculty response, also) and publish the results. Yes. we have received complaints about the survey but more often than not, I heard people talking about the issues we addressed. Also, I would like to quiet any rumors that the results of the sex survey were in any way fabricated or made up.
