No one was injured during the unfortunate demise of the barn, which was 90 years old. The barn belonged to those who owned the land on which the University of Wisconsin- Parkside was built. The bam was also a sports storage building before the Sports and Activities Center (SAC) was created. Dave Buchanan, the Public Information Officer of UW-Parkside, said that the barn no longer being around is a "loss for us" and for the "history of the area." There was gas and some lawn mowing equipment in the barn, which accelerated the fire. Propane tanks, usually stored in the barn, were removed from the structure prior to the start of fire. The Kenosha Fire Department fought the fire because they have a contract with the university to do so. Uw-Parkside elected to acquire the services of the Kenosha Fire Department since they are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week as well as reliable. The Kenosha Police Department is currently investigating the events which caused the barn to catch fire. The bam was raised from the surrounding area so some trees as well as the areas around the trees sustained damages from the fire. The ecostructure of the environment is still intact because it was wet when the fire started, which helped minimize the damage done to the land area surrounding the barn. In her report, Ravinkar stated. "RHA [Residence Hall Association)] is the governing bodyof Residence Life and ~nyUniversity ofWisc~nsin Institution cannot be biased against gender because of the Anti~Discrimination policy." She continued to say thatWhen students apply for a~mJsslon and also housing, they ~1I be obligated to check the x which displays sex as well ~ a box which displays gender. his IS not required so if one wereto check the sex box they do ' not have to check the one Containing gender. Sides were divided dueto Confusion and a misunderstanding of why there would be two boxes if sex and gender were one and the same. Ravnikar quickly cleared up any indiscretions and quarrels of the matter by explaining, " .. .gender is based on what you consider yourself or the sex you identify the best with. For example, I may be born a woman but 1 identify better with males. Imagine how uncomfortable the setting would be living in the dorms with women and I don't identify well with them ...[we] have to accommodate all students." The information that would be received from these applications will not only serve for these purposes, but to give the universities a clue as to how many transgender students are attending their institutions. "We have a diverse body of students, so this should be in order because we don't know who it affects," Ravinkar said, after a few students disagreed. Although the idea was explained to this extent, se~ators had different ideas and feelings toward the new bill. Beverly Spires intervened. saying, "If we are going to get this information, we might as well have an 'other' box ... " which was an idea that was not shunned by any senators or officers, but was soon looked over. Others shared their opinions on the issue until time was running short. The protocol that was mentioned has not been set in stone. but the protocol was very concise in its rules and ~ow the application would be .carned out if it were to be established. Staph infection update Mackenzie Heise Heise007@uwp.edu A few weeks ago. several athletes at UW-Parkside contracted staph infections. Since our initial reporting in the Oct. 23 issue of The Ranger News, this is what we know: There has been one confirmed and one possible case of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). MRSA is a more serious strand of a staph infection that does not respond to normal antibiotics, However, both of the atbletes with the infection have completed their treatments and are now officially cleared as "Come get that good copy!" 110 longer contagious. There have been no new outbreaks in the last week. Everyone naturally has some amount of staph on his or her body. It is when the staph colonizes that the problems begin to occur. Staph is often spread through skin-to-skin contact but can be picked up from many common items. Those infected by staph do not necessarily feel ill. infections usually start as small red bumps that look much like pimples or bug bites. These can turn into large painful areas of infection that require draining. As previously reported, parts of the Sports and Activitiy Center were temporarily shut down and thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Upon reopening, new guidelines were established and have been more forcefully held in place. For example. spray bottles of disinfectant are now more available and must be used in the weight room after using any equipment. There is also hand sanitizer available at many of the facilities in the SAC. From here. the most important thing to do according to Deena Curtis, the head athletic trainer, is to educate people on how to do all they can to prevent a staph infection. The most important thing is to practice good hygiene. This includes washing your hands often, showering immediately after any physical activity. not sharing personal items such as towels. soap, or deodorant, and adequately covering all open wounds. Along with all the normal preventative measures now being taken at the S.A.c. the staff is also purchasing an ozone machine. This machine will fill a room with ozone to kill bacteria. It will be placed on a schedule and moved around the building to various spots with the intent of keeping that area free of some of the bacteria that can spread to cause a staph infection. Even when taking all the precautions described above it is possible to acquire an infection. If you have any questions or concerns involving a staph infection, visit the student health and counseling center. The Ranger News There are a few things I should apologize for this week, as editor in chief and representative for The Ranger News. One of those things is the arrangement of the pages in last week's issue. Although we electronically submitted the pages in the correct order, our printing company mixed them up. When I saw the papers on Tuesday, I was upset, but had to laugh it off. What else could I do? My only regret is that it wasn't the first week of April so we could say it was "intentional" for April Fool's Day. Last week's issue contained some of the best content we have had this semester. Last week, there was one opinion piece that borders on being libel. The individual who wrote this editorial falsely accused Rainbow Alliance of misappropriating student funds. According 10 the definition of libel, this opinion piece could be considered a criminal action because it harms the character of a student organization on campus. The power of the pen is mighty, indeed. The Ranger News does have the editorial right to refuse to print an opinion. However, I will admit that our editorial staff has a very difficult time deciding when to deny publication. Generally, our reasoning is this: If an editorial bashes or directly attacks an individual or group without offering a sensible reason why tbat group is being attacked, we will cut it. Last week, there was one editorial we chose not to run for that very reason. However, the editorial written about Rainbow Alliance, which we did run, should have been considered more carefully. Of course, hindsight is 20120 and all I can do now is apologize. I would like to publicly apologize to Rainbow Alliance for running the editorial, which falsely accused your organization. In the future, we will try to avoid publishing such blatant accusations, or at least investigate them to determine if they are true or false before printing them. Again, I apologize for any harm that has come to your organization as a result of last week's Opinion page, and [ hope that you can forgive me for this oversight. Kaitlyn M. After spending the first quarter establishing the inner hierarchy of the institution, where the children make extra money through thieving, pimping and prostitution, the director deftly illustrates how Vanya learns from this lifestyle ways to improve his own lol.
