After an isolated
group
of University
of Wisconsin
- Parks ide athletes
were
diagnosed
with staphylococcus
(staph)
infections,
portions
of
the Sports
and Activities
Center
were temporarily
shut down on
Wednesday,
Oct. 17. After the
areas were closed
to investigate
the public
health
issue, the
affected
areas were then
reopened
to the public
on Friday,
Oct. 19.
The athletes
who were
diagnosed
with infections
are
currently
being investigated
to
determine
whether
or not the
staph infections
are methicillin-
resistant
staphylococcus
aureus.
The results
of those tests will not
be
available
until early this week.
MRSA
is resistant
to many of
the broad-spectrum
antibiotics
commonly
used to treat staph
infect.ions.
Because
MRSA
can
resist all but the strongest
of
drugs,
it
can cause more serious
infections
like pneumonia
and
joint and bloodstream
infections.
Responding
to the
possibility
of MRSA
infections,
officials
immediately
shut down
high-contact
areas used by the
student
athletes.
Disinfecting
procedures
received
from
the Kenosha
County

were implemented,

Staph
bacteria
are
one of the most
common
causes
of
skin infections
in
the United
States.
http://www.lib.uiowa.edulhardin/md/cdc/staph/sem4.html
and the KCHD
visited
campus
on
Thursday,
Oct. 18 to determine
that the university
had taken all
necessary
precautions
to reopen
the facility.
Staph bacteria
are normally
found on the skin or in the
nose of about one-third
of the
population.
lf a person
has staph
on his skin but does not feel sick,
he is "colonized"
but not infected
with the bacteria.
Healthy
people
can be colonized
and experience
no
ill
effects;
however,
it is easy
to spread
the bacteria
to others.
When
staph bacteria
enter
the body through
an injury to
the skin, symptoms
may include
redness,
warmth,
swelling
and
tenderness
of the skin, as well as
boils
or
blisters.
Staph is most
often spread
through
direct skin-
to-skin
contact,
but can also
be picked
up from commonly
shared
items.
To control
MRSA
outbreaks
on sport teams,
the Centers
for
Disease
Control
and Prevention
recommend
that all athletes
shower
and wash with soap after
all
practices
and competitions.
All wounds
that could be
potentially
infectious
skin lesions
should
be adequately
covered,
or the athletes
who are infected
should
be excluded
from practice
until the lesions
are healed
or can
be adequately
covered.
Also, all
shared
sports equipment
should
be regularly
cleaned.
The best way to prevent
the
spread
of staph infections
is to
practice
good hand washing.
The
Wisconsin
Division
of Public
Health
recommends
washing
the hands with anti-bacterial
soap under hot water for at least
15 seconds.
They also strongly
discourage
sharing
personal
items such as towels,
clothing,
soap and deodorant.
If
a student
develops
a
skin lesion,
he or she should
contact
the Student
Health
and
Counseling

allows
students
to work the way a full-
time employee
of the company
would work, but with part-time
hours. They can also choose
which hours to work and work
around
their school
schedules.
Most internships
last for one
semester
to up to two years,
allowing
students
to work part-
time during
the school
year and
full-time
during
the summer.
"You do not necessarily

Amanda
Stanaitis.
"I cannot
stress enough
the flexibility
that comes
with
this internship,"
she added.
Interns

a
commission
based upon sales, which
are
primarily
insurance
sales, as well
as a stipend
of $100 per week.
The top fifty percent
of interns
make an average
commission
of $9,584
per year. Although
the internship
deals primarily
in sales, Stanaitis

the
benefits
of gaining
strong
sales
experience.
"Until

I
can guarantee
that you will not

Stanaitis.
"Almost

At Northwestern

a resume,
students
are required
to fill out an

but it was
still a lot offun.
One
of our newer
reporters,
Ryan
Montross,
even
decided
to cover
the
event
as his first
sports
article.
This
is where
problems
with
accuracy
came
in.
Ryan
was
very
eager
to get quotes
from
other
students
who
were
competing
in the tournament.
So eager,
in
fact,
that he did not realize
that some
of the players
were
giving
him false
names.
PaJ1
of the problem
was also
that
they
gave
him
fake
names
wh.ich
were
fairly
obscure,
and in some
cases,
he did not notice
the en-or
until
he
tried
searching
some
of the names
online
to find they
were
the
names
of little-known
celebrities
or h.istorical
individuals.
I
hope
the individuals
involved
in this whole
fiasco
understand
that giving
false
information
to the
newspaper,
although
it is not illegal
as it would
be
if
you
lied to the police,
is at the very
least
not a good
practice.
Not only
does
it
compromise
our integrity,
but also your
integrity
for not telling
the truth.
On a brighter
note,
The
Ranger
News

has
voted
to approve

Adrienne

We look
forward
to working
with
her and think
sbe

asset
to our staff.
Congratulations,

Opinion
Editor
One
of the goals
of this newspaper,
and all newspapers
for that matter,
is to provide
timely
and accurate
news.
As a
weekly,
we sometimes
struggle
to stay
timely,
but we always
strive
to report
information
accurately.
However,
our ability
to maintain
that accuracy
greatly
depends
on our sources,
which
are sometimes
not as reliable
as we would
like them
to be.
