One of the most hotly contested issues of the discussion was the 35 percent of an organization's requested budget that could be used for officer stipendS. With his third consecotive earning of this award (seventh in his career), DeWitt led the Rangers to their third consecutive Great Lakes Valley Conference title this year. De Witt has been coaching at UW- Parkside for 25 years. He bas coached the Women's Cross Country team, the Race Walking team, and the Women's Track team. In the past seven years, he has led the Rangers Cross Country team . to six GLVC titles, and he helped the team qualify for the Nationals 23 times. The UW-Parkside Women's Cross Country team placed second in the NCAA Division II Regionals held on Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Wayne E. Dannebl National Cross Country course, located on the UW-Parkside campus. _ The Rangers were one of three teams that-qualified for the NCAA Division II Nationals held in Pensacola, Florida, on Saturday, Nov. 18. "Our girls raced strong and to their level of expectation," said DeWitt on the -. UW-Parkside Athletics Web site. ''They did a great job of keeping themselves in good position throughout the race." UW-Parkside had 91 points and only lost to Grand Valley State, who won the Regionals with 47 points. Valerie Kelly was UW-Parkside's top while teammates-Jessica Lamp and Jill Winkler placed rtinth and 12th with times of 22:30 and 22:39, respectively. All three girls received regional honors for placing in the top 15. Some-other Ranger runners included Naomi Fulton, ,I 8"', 22:47;Jessica . The Rangers had only lost to three teams prior to the Nationals competition, all of which were against nationally. ranked opponents. They lost to eigbth ranked illinois from Division" I, second ranked ali viet Nazarene from the NAJA, and top ranked Division II rival Grand Valley State, putting the Rangers' record at 93-3 thisyear. At Nationals, on Saturday, Nov.l8, the Rangers finished eighth out of 24 teams. Once again, Valerie Kelly was the team's top runner. placing 15 1 11'; she ran the 8K course in 21 :03. PNL tries to inspire young people. especially tnner city youths, to realize that there is hope and many great possibilities of having a successful life and future. Among other tasks, PNL has supported kids hy providing school supplies. The charity has also groomed teenagers for summer job opportunities and helped find them employment. Bridging The Gap BY CAMILLA SIMON simon026@uwp.edu -to explain that many Hinong women lived in the jungle of Laos for IS years, starving, being forced to marry men who are then promiscuous. Vang'smain presentation .was entitled "Portraits of Hmong Women" She started the project two years ago in hopes of bridging present Hmong culture to its rich past. Yang began interviewing H mong women who she knew through family and"friends to hear their bicultural story. The project features 17 women, most whom are ordinary in today's society. On Monday, Nov. 13, Parkside hosted visual artist Kou Yang. She discussed intersections of ethnic and gender identity and art. Yang, a Hrnong refugee, moved to 'the United States when she was five years old. She graduated from OW-Green Bay in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in Photography and Design and a minor in Graphic Design. She got her masters in Visual Studies from Cardinal Strich University. Yang hasreceived grants . from the Ella Lyman Cabot Trust Fund, Wisconsin Art's . Board and the Institute for Race and Ethnicity for photographic documentaries on Hrnong women and Shamanism. She is also a governor-appointed. board member of the Wisconsin Humanities Council. Yang's presentation was entitled "Dualldentities: A Hmong American Woman's Experience." It focused on , Hmong women who came from Laos and who now live in the America. One section of the documentary was tilled "Infusion." The digital collage was created to demonstrate the 30 years of progress, created into one. Yang said, "1 have dedicated this piece to Hmong women who sacr:ificed their I.", •• l~'(C$l>~fpre u~,:' he'wenl 0)1" . .. ,~ . " .... " .. and a few that "are living the dream." Their ages range from 22 to 82. Some of the stories exemplified how traditional Hmong values conflict with today's society; such as in the case of marriage, divorce, bride price, children, health problems, and career goals. Some of the women were shunned by their families because they did not practice traditional Hmong beliefs about those issues. Yang updated the audience on several of the women who are now mending their broken relationships with their families. Yang said, "Even though I cannot change me past, I am giving back to women to allow them to heal." Each story includes a color photo of the women in their traditional Hmong clothing and a black and white photo of the women around their home. Yang sought to "give voice to women who should be respected and loved for who they are." Growing up in an abusive family, Yang felt helpless and now bas realized that she can justify why she is here. In her presentation, she said. "It has been too long that people haven't heard the voices of Hmong women," Since completing the project, Yang has renlized that through time, the Hmong culture is slowly evolving, and that it is important to have identity within the culture itself. ..
