Also, if students have emergencies outside of the campus buildings, there are numerous poles with blue lights attached to them. President Pro-Tempore Brian Graziano nominated Senator Curtis Jackson to the open SUFAC spot. The senate questioned Jackson regarding his experience with budgets, his availability for the committee's meetings, and possible conflicts of interest stemming " from his involvement with the Black Student Union and Greeks at Parkside. Jackson was confirmed to SUFAC by the senate. M' Fettes attempted to appoint ike Speiglhoff to an open seat on SUFAC. Senator Carly Surber pointed out that Fettes could not simply appoint a nommee and that Speiglhoff needed to be voted on by the entire senate before taking a seat on SUFAC. A hand vote was taken and Speiglhoff, failing' to get the necessary simple majority, was not con finned to SUFAC. SUFAC presented a-budget proposal to the senate which accordiagto SUFAC bylaws needed to be approved during the Nov. 11 meeting. Senator David Wilson made a motion to table voting on the proposal until the senators had time to review a hard copy of it. However, the trip was just the Rangers' next stop in theirbasketball season, as The UW-Parkside Men's Basketball team celebrated their 77- UW,Parkside would challenge three non-conference opponents in the I O" Anniversary 'Disney's Division n Tip- Off Classic. The action for the Rangers started on Friday, as they faced their first challenge in tbe Pacers of South Carolina-Aiken. The Rangers took the bard fought match in a 79-63 final, but thebattle was foul-filled for both teams. Four Rangers were issued four fouls apiece, and the Pacers had one player foul out while five others collected four fouls each. With 53 percent shooting from the floor, sophomore forward LaVontay Fenderson scored 25 points, while junior guard Tyrone Deacon added ~4 points to the winning effort. They express desires for good lives, free from the crime and suffering that many of them see all around them. The children take pride in themselves and theirclassmates as they draw closer to the end of the program and the citywide dance competition. Especially notable is the lack of a narrator. The stories presented are in the words of the children, their dance instructors, teachers. parents, principals, and friends. As such, it is of extreme importance to offer proper respect to the film's editor, Sabine Krayenbtihl, for weaving the footage into such a wonderful and complete story. If the film suffers at all, it is just past the middle when the wonder of starting to learn passes and the thrill of competition has yet to set in. The. childreo find themselves equaUy excited and apprehensive about the coming competition, and as most of us are aware, the'waiting can be the worst par. of any endeavor. Yet, the excitement picks up once more as the students take everything they've' learned ,,>bout steps, attitude, and grace to the competition floor. "Mad Hot Ballroom" brings the audience into the lives of these kids and reminds anyone who had forgotten how awkward and yet enlightening , being II years old can be. Children can be brighter, more insightful, and mature than they are often given credit for. Following three classes of 5 ID graders in New York, the film is a documentary about the city's IO-week ballroom dance program. The camera follows the action at eye level with the chi Idren and makes it easy for the audience to join the children on their journey. Playing their guitars upside down and left handed, and occasionally using a harmonica harness, they brought a unique appearance to the stage. Wednesday's repertoire of songs was performed from memory. Mike is the primary song writer and musician, while his brother Tom travels along to accompany him. Mike independently released his second album. 'There and Back." The album has entered the "eMJ" (an interactive discovery music network) top two hundred adds, WIth number sixteen in the country. Other than Alaska and Hawaii. the two have performed inevery state. The brothers perform with the purpose of paying homage to great musicians who have inspired them. including Bob Dylan, Dan Lanoi. , Wilco, and Ryan Adams. If it were so that all,of our intentions and subsequent actions contributed positively to the betterment of humankind, without an uncharitable thought to be found or a selfish action to be judged, what an unusual state of affairs that would be. All concepts of guilt, shame, remorse, anger, revenge.jealousy, envy, and the like would be nonexistent - there would be no known circumstance to give rise to any of those ideas. In a world minus mistakes, we would be 'rid of all hostility, all hurt feelings, ..l1 issues of injustice' - all issues of oppression. We would, as well, be rid of our personal freedom. When the potential for making a mistake is present, then we genuinely exercise personal freedom, or free will, in the moment. When our choices are not guaranteed success. then we are responsible. and free, to make the choices that we feel are in our best interests and, hopefully, in the best interests of others. Freedom is a difficult thing. Mistakes seem to come in two forms. Those mistakes that arise from choices made with good intentions in mind, in which the untoward consequences are unforeseeable, are inevitable. The human condition seems to dictate that our vision of the future and the outcomes of our decisions be obscured or vague to us. If this were not so, we would be omnipotent - which we are, most assuredly, not. On the other hand, some mistakes arise from less-than good intentions. This is a different species of mistake in that the standard eight-year old kid on the street, if stopped and asked, could probably point out thatno good can come from choices arising from ill intentions. Yet these mistakes, as well, are part and parcel of the human condition - we are not particularly charitable towards one and another, for whatever reason. We, then, have a traditional status for all of us to occupy at one time or another when our mistakes become public and are deemed harmful. We have the status of Contrition. Contrition, from the Latin, Contritus, "ground to pieces." This is an apt definition for the feeling of standing publicly accountable for some less-than commendable personal decision - ground to pieces. Sincere contrition demands that we set aside pride, set aside all defensiveness and set aside the. outside hope that the public will somehow see our bad decision in a more favorable light if we just had the opportunity to explain ourselves. Sincere contrition requires that we surrender all of those ideas and freely admit, "I was wrong, and I am truly sorry for the pain I caused." The most profound thing about this life, a life in which we make mistakes everyday, is that the nature of human character rests on those very mistakes - not so much the bad decision itself, but how it is that we conduct ourselves, in our acts of contrition. It is when we take our turn occupying the status of contrition that we define precisely who we are and for what we stand. In that moment we discover whether we can genuinely be accountable for our freedom, whether we can live harmoniously with our freedom, or whether we cash it all in and just become another victim of an uncaring, unjust world, ground to pieces as it were. Clearly, we should not be surprised or dismayed that people make mistakes, of either type. However, we can, and should be surprised when a . genuine act of contrition soars above the mundane of our everyday struggle - embodying a spirit of character that requires far greater courage than we are generally able to bring about. In that moment we may be able to say that, mistakes and all, this is the best of all possible worlds. Minus a true sense of remorse though, there really may be n~ hope for any of us as Weprepare to make our next mistake. While it may not be the most applicable citation, Martin . The Purpose of Comics Two weeks ago, a comic published in the Ranger News titled, "The Misadventures of Swampy andLavagurl in 3D," caused much controversy. Being a cartoonist of a pretty lame comic myself, it made me think about the purpose of comics and how to know if you are crossing the line. Comics are meant to entertain people and make them laugh. Eveo though-reading an entire comic strip takes very little time, cartoonists are satifisfied knowing that for 5 whole seconds they can produce joy in a person. This is done in all different kinds of fashions from the wholesomeness of Peanuts to the often sadistic (and my personal favorite) Pearls Before Swine. Comics have also taken on an important role in enlightening people about the state of our country. Doonesbury and Mallard Fillmore discuss world issues and politics. with a humorous approach. When all else fails, the cornic section will at least come in handy when you run out of gift wrap or when you're trying to house-train a pet. But like all other types of . entertainment, certain comics have been criticized for being politically incorrect. No one probably knows this better than Aaron McGruder, the creator of the The Boondocks. McGruder's comic sparked much debate over the main character's views on politics and African- American culture. It was so controversial that newspapers often withheld its publication. I am not a fan of The Boondocks, but I can appreciate McGruder's courage to writ~ the comic for as long as he did, despite the constant backlash. So even though controversy has been found in comics for years, what was wrong with "The Misadventures of Swampy and Lavagurl in 3D"? The mistake here was that it was personal. It was used solely as an act of revenge. Although the people it spoofed were left nameless, comics should not be used to attack certain individuals (unless it's Maury Pavich or anyone else contributing to the .downfall of our society). And no one knows this better than the two guys involved with making the comic strip. Who are now suffering major-consequences because of it. So to them I say, I'm glad there are still people out there like you with the courage to cross that line.
